# "What if Apple made an expense app": a Filipino developer's second ₱199 one-time-purchase expense app hit #1 overall on day one, then was overtaken by rivals and fell to #6 a month later

**What it is** An expense app for Apple devices only. Type "coffee 180 gcash" to log an entry; it works offline, needs no sign-up, syncs via iCloud, and is a ₱199 one-time purchase.

**Why it took off** The developer first sold it to old users in his own Tarsi community and a developer group of tens of thousands. Concentrated purchases within one day pushed it to #1 on the Philippines' overall paid chart. The Philippines' and small countries' paid finance charts are thin, so a few dozen sales can reach the top.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another one-time-purchase expense app for the Philippines. Copy the method with a different slot: find a country or category where the paid charts are still thin and no one has done it systematically, build an offline one-time-purchase small app, and launch it to push the charts through groups you already control.

Grade C: the playbook has been publicly covered by podcasts and teardown articles; the top 20 of the Philippines' expense paid chart already has 7 local rivals. Zero's day-one ranking came from the developer's own community of tens of thousands, which followers can't get; a single app's scale is also very small. Public / widely discussed

Bryl Lim built Tarsi, an expense app, over a weekend this past March. It made about $20k in its first month and stayed #1 on the Philippines' finance paid chart for half a year. In Oct 5 he shipped another one: Zero, minimal, native Swift, ₱199 one-time purchase. He says it took the #1 spot across all categories in the Philippines on day one. But a month later it had only 43 ratings in the Philippines, not one gained in the last 4 days, and it sits at #6 on the finance paid chart. Ahead of it are a batch of local one-time-purchase expense apps that copied Tarsi's playbook. Below: how it climbed up, why it stalled, and whether you can still use this playbook.

### Oct 5, afternoon 3:45: a group announcement

Zero's first announcement wasn't on the App Store or on X, but in the "Tarsi Community" Facebook group. Bryl is a group admin, and the post opens with "I've been working on a new finance app called Zero, and wanted to share it here first." One line then explains how it differs from Tarsi: "If Tarsi is the friendlier way to manage money, Zero is for people who want something simpler and more minimal," followed by the example: "Just type things naturally like \"Coffee 180 GCash\" or \"Grab 250 yesterday\"", and finally the price: "₱199 — one-time payment," plus a line reassuring old users: "Tarsi isn't going anywhere."

The post drew 143 reactions and about 30 comments. A top comment, from Gerald Reyes, read: "nice eto talaga struggle ko sa Tarsi, new user here nakaka overwhelm" (this is exactly my pain point with Tarsi; I'm a new user and it's overwhelming). Another asked: "what is the difference with tarsi in terms of day to day use kuya bryl?" (in day-to-day use, how is it different from Tarsi, Bryl?). Who the first buyers were is obvious: Tarsi's existing users.

The same day, a member of App Builders PH, the Philippine dev community he runs (63.9k members), reposted Zero. The next day he posted the same line on Facebook and LinkedIn: "What if Apple made a finance tracking app?", ending with "less than a day after launching last night: #1 App — All Categories, #1 Finance in 8 countries". The LinkedIn post got 394 reactions (11-06 views). In his Oct 7 blog post, "8 countries" became "17 countries". These day-one ranks are self-reported and can't be verified from outside.

### What it actually is

A finance tracking app that only runs on Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac, synced through your own iCloud. The store page lists its selling points in this order:

- **One-sentence logging** : type "coffee 180 gcash" and it splits out the amount, category, account, and date for you to confirm and save. You can also scan receipts, or log straight from widgets and Control Center.

- **Ask your money** : "How much did I spend on food last month?" It answers directly, with the matching transactions attached.

- **All accounts** : cash, banks, e-wallets, credit cards, loans, investments, in any currency, with your net worth in view.

- **Budgets, bills, installments, loans owed and lent, balance forecasts** .

- **Privacy** : no sign-up, no ads, no tracking, works offline, locked with Face ID.

The last line of the store page reads "BUY ONCE. KEEP IT ALL." One payment, everything included. No subscription, no trial, ₱199 (about $3.5 USD; $2.99 in the US store).

None of this is unique. "One-sentence logging" is already common overseas, and most of those apps are subscriptions. The Philippines already has several one-time-purchase trackers. What Zero sells is packaging: the "what if Apple made it" pitch, plus examples like GCash and Grab that instantly signal "made for Filipinos".

### How fast, how big

| | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Philippine ratings | 43 in total, average 4.77 | App Store Philippines, 11-06 |
| Rating growth | 10-28 37 → 11-02 43 ratings, then zero growth for 4 days | App Store Philippines, daily |
| Philippines Top Paid overall | 10-28 #21 → #11-06 #42, bouncing between 21 and 58 | App Store charts |
| Philippines Finance Top Paid | Ranked #5,11-06 to #6 from 10-28 to 11-05 | App Store charts |
| Other countries | Finance Top Paid #3–9 in Singapore and #1 in the Cayman Islands, with Uzbekistan, Malta, UAE, Qatar, and Portugal also charting, though those storefronts show 0 ratings | App Store storefronts, 11-06 |

The last line shows the logic behind this playbook: in small countries, the paid finance chart is thin enough that a handful of sales gets you on it. Singapore #3 and Cayman #1 could easily be one or two people buying.

Revenue isn't public. Paid apps get a higher review rate than free apps, and the sales implied by 43 ratings come to a few hundred to one or two thousand copies. At ₱199, monthly revenue is likely in the low thousands of dollars (an inference, low confidence), far below Tarsi's first month.

### Where users come from

1. **Your existing audience** : Tarsi Community launch, sold first to people who already know him. Zero's day-one ranks depended almost entirely on this wave.

2. **A developer community you run** : App Builders PH, 63.9k people, with Bryl as admin. Not all of them are tracker users, but they repost and share.

3. **Personal accounts showing the wins** : screenshots of "#1 across all charts on day one" on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Threads for secondary spread. His TikTok has 210k followers, but his recent videos don't cover Zero specifically. His X account has a few thousand followers, so its reach is small.

4. **The chart itself** : once you hit the paid chart, people browsing the store buy on impulse. Tarsi said on a podcast back then that 80–90 downloads a day was enough to reach #1 Top Paid in several countries (Tap & Swipe podcast, May).

5. **Ads** : none found. Tarsi's era was explicitly no-ads.

The problem is that channels 1 and 2 are one-time. Existing users buy once and that's it. After that, you only get organic traffic from the charts, and the top of the finance paid chart is no longer his alone.

### His playbook has been copied in full

Tarsi's model of "one-time purchase + thin paid chart + own community" is not a secret. Bryl went on the Tap & Swipe podcast and described about $20k in the first month with no ads. He also spoke at University of the Philippines lectures and at hackathons he ran. In Oct 29, MissumAI published a "Steal this idea" breakdown that named Zero. When someone on X asked how he reached charts in 16 countries, he replied in one line: "Fewer competition in the paid category!"

As a result, at least 20 one-time-purchase trackers from local indie developers, launched within 2026 year, now sit in the top 7 of the Philippines finance paid chart:

| Product | Launched | Pricing | Philippines scale (11-06) | vs. Zero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cashtra | 2026-06-18 | ₱149 | 116 ratings, +7 in the last 12 days, Finance Paid #1 | Cheaper and earlier, with rating growth about 3 times Zero's |
| Silo | 2026-09-17 | ₱199 | 19 ratings, +7 in the last 6 days, Finance Paid #1–4 | Focused on bills and "how much can I still spend today" |
| Halo | 2026-04-14 | ₱199 | 107 ratings, Finance Paid #5–11 | Similar, but no one-sentence logging, Watch, or Mac |
| Kwenta, Barya, Squiq, Asenso | 2026-05 to 11-03 | — | 0–7 ratings, Finance Paid #8–17 | Squiq only launched in Nov 3, and people are still coming in |
| Tarsi (his own) | 2026-03-12 | Free from 9-25 + Pro | 484 ratings, #14 in Finance Top Grossing | Has a mascot, streaks, and a game-like feel. Moving to free left the one-time-purchase spot open. |

Add the veteran Money Manager (its ad-free paid version has ₱99,2,300 ratings, ranked #3 in Finance Top Paid), and Zero is a late entrant into a crowded small chart.

Bryl can see this clearly, so he doesn't bet on one app. His developer account has 11 apps, 9 of them one-time paid. In October 1–2, he got 6 small tools charting in a single day. Mayi (travel) and Kabi (fitness, reportedly acquired by Huawei) follow the same route. Zero is one cell in that matrix: Tarsi goes free to capture volume, and Zero catches people who don't want a subscription and find Tarsi too complicated.

### If it were you

**For a C-level builder, copying this isn't worth it.** The playbook works, but it has been publicly dissected and is already saturated in the Philippine tracker category. Zero's day-one ranks came from a community of tens of thousands of developers that followers can't access. What's worth learning is the method, not this product.

**Who it suits** : indie developers who can ship a complete small app in a week, and who already have an audience in some country or circle (a group of a few thousand people, an account with followers) that can buy on launch day.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants another one-time tracker in the Philippines (there are already 20 in the top 7, and Cashtra is cheaper and growing faster). Anyone without a launch audience who hopes organic store traffic will carry a cold start. Anyone who wants one app to pay the bills: at this scale a single app stays small, and Bryl's model relies on a dozen apps running together.

**How to do it** : don't compete with Zero. Swap the cell and use its method. (1) Change the country: find markets where the paid chart is just as thin but nobody has systematically worked it yet, such as local-language versions for Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, or the Gulf states, with examples using local wallets and ride-hailing apps (MoMo, GoPay, GrabPay, Touch 'n Go). (2) Change the category: find categories in a given country where the top ten paid apps are all old or foreign, such as fitness, travel, study, or habit tracking. Kabi hit the fitness paid chart in 16 countries. (3) Sell one-time: offline, no sign-up, no server, one payment at an impulse price (2–4 USD locally).

**How to acquire users** : build the audience first, then launch the app. Put a public Facebook group or Discord in the app, send the launch only to that group, and concentrate first-day purchases into a few hours so you climb the chart. Then spread "#1 on day one" screenshots on LinkedIn, Threads, and local dev groups. If you have no community, at least get a local account with tens of thousands of followers to post on launch day too.

**Get in early** : the sooner the better, but the window is per country. Once a country's Top Paid chart has three or four look-alike one-time purchase apps, stay out. Tarsi March's expense-tracking apps filled the Philippines in under 8 months, starting from launch, before 20.

**Signs you've misread it** : (1) you sell fewer than 30 copies a day in your first week and still can't climb the paid chart, meaning that market has fewer paying users than you thought, or you don't have enough people; (2) the top ten paid apps in your chosen country already include two or more one-time apps from local individual developers; (3) Apple adds general-purpose tracking to Wallet or a built-in system app, and the "what if Apple made it" pitch loses its opening.

## Why Zero - Finance Tracker (iOS id6818018555) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore library (daily since 2026-10-28), Apple lookup API, developer blog / Facebook / LinkedIn / TikTok, MissumAI case write-up.

### Bottom line

Zero didn't take off because the product is new. Filipino developer Bryl Lim validated a playbook with Tarsi, and Zero is the second run of it: **a one-time-purchase paid app + a thin Philippines Finance paid chart + his own communities (the Tarsi community, the 64k-member App Builders PH, a 210k-follower TikTok)** . It hit #1 on the Philippines overall paid chart on day one, driven by existing users buying at launch; after that, its rankings were held up by the low bar of the paid chart. By 2026-11 a wave of local Filipino one-time-purchase trackers copying the Tarsi model had pushed it to #5–6 on Finance Paid, with ratings flat for 4 days. Its scale is small (only 43 ratings in the Philippines), so it isn't a real breakout.

### Key facts

- Listed at 2026-10-05, ₱199 (Singapore S$3.98 / US $2.99) as a one-time purchase, no subscription, version 1.0.7 (10-28). 4.77,43 ratings, all from the Philippines; ratings counts in other stores are 0 (Apple lookup, ph, 2026-11-06; appstore library app_profile).

- Philippines overall paid chart: 10-28 #21 → 11-06 #42, fluctuating between 21–58; Finance Paid chart 10-28 through 11-05 consistently #5,11-06, dropping to #6 (appstore library app_day).

- Rating count: 10-28 37 → 11-02 43, then zero growth for 4 days; +4 over the last 7 days (appstore library).

- Singapore Finance Paid #3–9, Cayman Finance Paid #1, plus 6 other storefronts (Uzbekistan, Malta, UAE, Qatar, Portugal) on Finance Paid, but those storefronts have 0 ratings. It shows the bar for Finance Paid in small countries is very low, and a handful of sales is enough to chart (appstore library, 2026-11-06).

- Developer's self-reported day-one results: "#1 App — All Categories (Philippines)" and "#1 Finance in 17 countries" (blog 10-07); 10-06's Facebook post at the time said "8 countries." These are the founder's own claims. Our library only started recording on 10-28, so first-week results can't be verified.

### Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (Philippines) | How it differs from Zero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tarsi - Budget Tracker (same developer) | iOS / Android / web | 2026-03-12 | 484 ratings, Finance Top Grossing #14; switched to free + Pro on 9-25 | Made by the same person: Tarsi has a mascot, streaks, and achievements; Zero is minimal, native Swift, and all-Apple. Zero essentially took over the "one-time purchase" position from Tarsi |
| Cashtra - Budget Tracker(Jomari Batoctoy) | iOS | 2026-06-18 | ₱149,116 ratings, +12 over the last 7 days; #1 Finance Paid in the Philippines, #3 in New Zealand and Denmark | Same playbook at a lower price, launched 3 and a half months before Zero, with rating growth about 3 times Zero's. Zero's selling points are natural-language input and full Apple ecosystem support |
| Silo - Budget & Bills Tracker(Joeren Christopher Lee) | iOS | 2026-09-17 | ₱199,19 ratings, +6 over the last 7 days; Finance Paid #1–4 | Focuses on bills and spendable balance; Zero has more features, but its recent growth is slower |
| Halo - Budget & Bills Tracker(Adrian Justin del Rosario) | iOS | 2026-04-14 | ₱199,107 ratings; Finance Paid #5–11 | Same-category one-time-purchase tracker; Zero adds natural-language input, Watch and Mac support |
| Kwenta / Barya / Squiq / Asenso / Pentos | iOS | 2026-05 to 11-03 | 0–7 ratings, Finance Paid #8–17 | All are 2026-year-old one-time-purchase trackers (Pentos's developer doesn't appear to be Filipino; the rest look like local Filipino developers); Squiq only launched 11-03, and new entrants keep arriving |
| Money Manager(Realbyte) | iOS / Android | 2012 | Free version 13318 ratings; ad-free paid version ₱99,2300 ratings, Finance Paid #3 | Long-established manual budgeting app with a dated UI; Zero wins on native design and "type one sentence and it's logged" |
| Money Lover(Finsify) | iOS / Android | 2011 | 2363 ratings, #11 in Finance Top Grossing | Subscription model; Zero is one-time purchase, offline, and no sign-up |
| Lista PH / Cashew | iOS / Android | 2021 / 2023 | 788 / 399 ratings | Lista is a local Filipino team and free; Cashew is free with open-source roots. Neither is one-time purchase |
| Overseas natural-language / voice expense logging (ExpenseEasy, TrackMyExpense, ETracking, Floosyo, etc.) | iOS | 2025–2026 | Not verified | "Say 'coffee 5' and it's logged" is already common overseas, and mostly subscription-based. Zero's natural-language input isn't unique |
| Apple's own apps | Big-company features | — | — | Apple has no general-purpose expense app (only Apple Card / Wallet spending summaries). Zero's slogan "if Apple made an expense app" targets exactly that gap |

Conclusion: the category is crowded. Zero has nothing unique in features. On the Philippines Finance Paid chart, a wave of local one-time-purchase apps copying Tarsi has filled the space over 2026 years; Zero is a late entrant and is currently not at #1.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Launched in own community (confirmed)** : 10-05 15:45, Bryl posted Zero as admin in the "Tarsi Community" Facebook group, writing "wanted to share it here first," and got 143 reactions and 31 comments. In the comments, a Tarsi user said "Tarsi is too complicated for new users, I need a simple version," showing the first buyers were existing Tarsi users ([Tarsi Community post](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1243677331220736/posts/1411062514482216/)).

2. **Developer community he runs (confirmed)** : 10-05 the same day, in the App Builders PH group (63.9k members, Bryl is an admin, September announced it hit 50k), member Eric Rotaquio shared Zero ([post](https://www.facebook.com/groups/980298767865372/posts/1111707374724510/)).

3. **Personal accounts (verified)** : 10-06 posted on Facebook that it hit "#1 overall on day one" (164 reactions, 14 shares); LinkedIn and Threads got the same post that day; 10-07 wrote a blog post ([blog](https://bryllim.com/posts/made-an-app-that-became-number-one-in-multiple-countries-in-just-one-day)). Their personal site claims a community of 300k+. TikTok @bryllim has 213k followers, but none of the last 20 videos are about Zero specifically; 10-10 has one "achievement unlocked" video with 100k views, content unverified (TikHub). X has only about 1675 followers, so it barely matters (x-radar).

4. **Chart momentum (inferred)** : launch-day purchases from existing users pushed Zero to #1 on the Philippines Top Paid overall chart. After that, its placement on the paid chart kept bringing in organic store traffic. According to the Tap & Swipe podcast, Tarsi was hitting 80–90 daily downloads at the time, enough to reach #1 on several countries' Top Paid charts ([MissumAI](https://missumai.com/stories/steal-this-paid-upfront-launch)).

5. **Ads** : no evidence of ad spend found. At the time, the Tarsi founder explicitly said he "did not run ads" (Tap & Swipe, as reported by MissumAI).

### Why users are willing to pay

- A one-time ₱199 (about 3.5 US dollars) is an impulse-purchase price point. With no subscription, that alone is a selling point for users fed up with subscriptions (the founder's own summary from the Tarsi period).

- Entry matches local Filipino habits: example phrases like "coffee 180 gcash" and "grab 250" use the local GCash and Grab; it also works offline, needs no sign-up, stores data in your own iCloud, and supports Face ID.

- Native Apple ecosystem: iPhone, iPad, Watch, and Mac with real-time iCloud sync, and it supported the new iPhone Duo on day one. The slogan is "if Apple made an expense app."

### Differentiation, and whether it's a manufactured ranking

Zero's own claimed differentiators are three: natural-language input, full native Apple ecosystem, and minimalism plus one-time purchase. None of the three is unique: natural-language expense logging is everywhere overseas, and local Filipino one-time-purchase trackers like Cashtra, Silo, and Halo already exist. **What actually drove the day-one charting was the people the developer had (Tarsi's existing users and the community he runs), plus the low bar of the paid chart.** The differentiators gave Tarsi users a reason to "buy one more": Tarsi has moved to free plus subscription, and users who found it complicated and didn't want a subscription were picked up by Zero. Zero also let the developer reclaim the "one-time-purchase finance app" spot.

### How visible it is and the copycats

- The playbook is public: MissumAI 10-29 wrote a teardown titled "Steal this idea" that names Zero; the Tap & Swipe podcast's May episode disclosed Tarsi's first month at about $20k; TrustMRR published Tarsi's subscription revenue (about $971 MRR, 10-29). Bryl has also walked through this approach in a lecture at the University of the Philippines and at a hackathon he ran. Zero's own revenue has not been disclosed.

- Copycats have formed: in the top 20 of the Philippines Finance Paid chart, at least 7 one-time-purchase expense apps from individual Filipino developers launched over 2026 years (Cashtra, Silo, Halo, Kwenta, Barya, Squiq, Asenso), and Cashtra and Silo already rank above Zero (appstore library, 11-06).

- The developer is also expanding: the same developer launched 6 small-tool paid apps in 10-01/02 (per MissumAI's count), along with Mayi (travel), Kabi (fitness, since acquired by Huawei), and Fillo (car expenses).

### What others can borrow

1. Target countries and categories with thin paid charts: the Finance Paid charts in the Philippines, Singapore, and small Middle Eastern countries let a few dozen sales reach the top ranks. One-time purchase means no backend and no payment integration.

2. Build the community before launching the app: put a link to a public Facebook group in the app (group activity shows up in members' friends' feeds); launch to your own group first, then spread the "#1 on day one" screenshot as a second wave of promotion.

3. Two versions of the same app: the old one goes free with a subscription to capture volume, the new one sells as a one-time purchase to catch people who won't subscribe.

4. Localized example sentences (GCash, Grab) make users instantly see "this is made for me."

### Unknowns

- The "#1 overall, #17 in 1 store" on day one is the founder's own claim; our database only has data from 10-28 onward.

- Revenue isn't public; we don't know how many sales the 43 ratings correspond to (paid apps usually get a higher share of reviews than free ones).

- We haven't verified the relationship between Eric Rotaquio and Zero, who posted on App Builders PH (could be a group member sharing it, or a collaborator).

- We haven't verified whether TikTok published content specifically promoting Zero; we found no evidence of KOL or paid promotion.
