> Early November saw large, repeated Russian night attacks. Official alert apps were named in the news for not showing ballistic missiles, and the whole category surged. This one catches the most users among the many new apps launched in that window, using a personal status ("is it coming at me?"), ballistic countdowns, lock screen, watch, and CarPlay support, plus store and web search.

# "Is Anything Flying at My House": A Ukrainian Built an Air Defense App from 31 Telegram Channels

**What it is** A live map of Shaheds and missiles over Ukraine: it automatically reads public Telegram monitoring channels and air force alerts, and tells you whether something is flying toward your home or workplace, and how many minutes it has.

**Why it took off** In early November Russia launched several consecutive nights of massive strikes, and official alert apps were called out in the news for not showing ballistic missiles. The whole category surged together. It caught the most people among many new apps launched at the same time, thanks to a personal "is it coming for me" status, ballistic countdowns, lock screen/watch/CarPlay support, plus store and web search.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't enter the Ukrainian air-strike category; copy its method instead: find a real-time, safety-critical scenario where information is public but scattered across dozens of groups (power outages, disasters, queues, restrictions), answer only "does this affect my location, and how long do I have," keep the life-saving parts free, charge for replay and history, and acquire users through search.

C grade: the Ukrainian space is already crowded (official app with 348k ratings, two or three larger independent apps, and a government app about to enter), and demand rises and falls with the war, so outsiders can't easily catch up. What you can take away is the method: "aggregate public channels + personalized answers + paying for curiosity." Whether it works in another scenario still needs separate validation. Few people know about it yet

Небосхил (Neboskhyl) is a live Shahed and missile map built by a Ukrainian independent developer and launched in Oct 1. It has no radar of its own. What it does is stitch the text messages from 31 public monitoring channels into flight paths, telling you whether something is flying toward your home and how many minutes are left. Early November brought several nights of massive Russian strikes, and within a week its rating count more than doubled, pushing it to #2 in the Ukrainian App Store's free News chart. Below: why it caught this wave of people, where the money comes from, and what someone who wants to follow it could take away. The short answer: don't enter this category itself, but its approach is worth copying.

### A review from Zaporizhzhia

On Oct 30, a user living in Zaporizhzhia gave it 5 stars on the App Store, with a title of just one word: "Essential."

> "I use it so I don't have to check the Telegram channels every 5 minutes to see what's flying now. I live in Zaporizhzhia, and we keep getting hit here."

This sentence sums up the product. For 2022 years, Ukrainians have tracked air strikes through Telegram: the air force's official channel, national monitoring channels (the largest being @war_monitor), and each region's own "local observers," who post short messages like "Shahed ×3, heading toward such-and-such from such-and-such direction." The messages are public and fast, but scattered and fragmented, so people awake at night have to scroll channel by channel.

Небосхил automatically reads these messages and draws them as flight paths on a map. Users set just two points, home and work, and the app answers one question: **Is a target heading here, how far away is it, and how many minutes until it arrives.** Its website has a page explaining where the data comes from, listing all 31 channels, and openly stating which regions have local observers and which don't (17 of 24 regions covered).

### How much it grew

| Date | Total App Store ratings | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 895 | 27 |
| 10-31 | 1,005 | 36 |
| 11-01 | 1,184 | 197 |
| 11-04 | 1,873 | 303 |
| 11-06 | 2,268 | 196 |

(all countries combined; 2,250 of them are from the Ukrainian store; other countries are single digits.)

11-06 In Ukraine it ranked #20 on the overall free chart, #2 in free News, and **#194 on the overall Top Grossing chart** , showing that people are actually buying in-app purchases. The Google Play version only launched 10-18 later; 11-04 it has 3,631 installs, and 11-05 it jumped to 16,116 in one day. That jump may be a store data bump; we can't confirm it.

Take the rating average with a grain of salt. The average is 4.79, but among the last few dozen reviews that contain text, 1 to 3 stars make up about half, mostly complaining that it's "inaccurate." The mismatch between stars and text most likely means the app showed a star-only rating prompt, which satisfied users tapped through quickly (inference). So comparing rating counts, its real download numbers are likely overstated.

### Why this week

It isn't just this app rising. Around Nov 3, the entire Ukrainian "air-strike map" category surged together. That week (weekly new ratings in the Ukrainian App Store):

| App | New this week | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Повітряна тривога (official alert app, made by Ajax) | 4,992 | 348k |
| Карта тривог - Dron Alerts | 1,949 | 18k |
| RadarUA | 1,328 | 14.4k |
| **Небосхил** | **1,307** | **2,250** |
| Мапа тривог віджет | 487 | 5,253 |

The demand was driven by the news. From late October into early November, Russia launched consecutive nights of massive drone and missile strikes. 10-17 the government announced an official alert app with a map of the general direction of targets; 10-26 an air force spokesperson publicly explained that the official app **doesn't show ballistic missiles** , reported by TSN, 24 channel, and RBC; 11-01 the air force then suggested people use apps to track target movements (RBC). Together, these made "install an app to watch the Shaheds" something everyone in the country was searching for.

By absolute numbers, Небосхил only ranks fourth. But measured by base, it grew fastest: one week's new ratings were roughly 58% of its total. A whole batch of new apps flooded in the same month (Dronar, КОНТУР, Небо зараз, Пильно, Карта БПЛА, and one that directly borrowed the official name "Повітряна тривога (Air Alert)"), most with only single digits to a few hundred ratings. Only it climbed to #2 in the News chart.

### Why it stood out among similar apps

**One: it answers the question "for me."** Most rivals give you a national map and leave you to interpret it. It gives you a status card: home is fine, work is fine, or "target heading toward you, 23 km, 9 minutes" (illustrative). Notifications are sorted the same way: heading for you, rapid descent nearby, ballistic missile, alert, all clear.

**Two: it fills the gap the official app gets criticized for.** The official app doesn't show ballistic missiles, so it made ballistics its own category, showing the arrival countdown in large text on the card and lock screen once a launch is reported. After 10-26 news broke, that became a ready-made selling point.

**Three: it pushes native Apple features to the limit.** Live Activities on the lock screen and Dynamic Island, an Apple Watch version that runs independently of the iPhone plus watch-face widgets, iPad, Mac, and then 10-28 CarPlay. One 10-24 review reads: "Thanks to the author, the whole family! Especially the CarPlay version. Now I feel much safer driving with my kids during alerts." Most rivals only offer a map plus push notifications.

**Four: updates arrive alarmingly fast.** From 10-05 to early November, the version history shows a dozen or so releases: widgets, watch, ballistics, paid tier, invite friends, CarPlay, English. Reviews asked for English (10-28) and complained the text was too small (10-30); the next two versions fixed the large-text display and added English. Some things went unaddressed, though: complaints like "the ballistic alert sound is so scary it could stop your heart in the middle of the night" have no reply in the release notes yet.

**Five: it has more than one way in.** Titles and subtitles rotate keywords across regions ("карта тривог, радар", "карта шахедів, ракет", "Air Raid Alert Map / Shahed & missile tracker live"), and it ranks in the top 10 for each of these searches in the App Store. The official site neboskhyl.com's homepage is the live map, titled "Карта шахедів і ракет онлайн — де летять зараз" (Online Shahed and missile map: where it's flying now). Searching "карта шахедів онлайн" on the web, it ranks #4, next to the official map and RadarUA. The web page also links to the App Store and Google Play, and can be installed as a web app to receive push notifications.

No one discusses it on TikTok or X, and Ukrainian media haven't written about it. Its own Telegram channel automatically posts "how many targets are in the air now" every 30 minutes, with only about 50 subscribers. In other words, almost all its traffic comes from search: people search "Shahed map" in the store and on the web, and click through to it.

### Where the money comes from

The paid tier is called Небосхил+, with a monthly subscription that's free for the first week, or a one-time purchase. A foreign volunteer said in a review that he paid $5.99. The clever part is what's free and what's paid:

- **Everything safety-related is free** : your status, notifications, alerts, ballistics.

- **What's paid is what satisfies curiosity** : the full flight path for each target, "replay last night" (how targets flew over the past 48 hours), altitude curves, and later up to 5 custom locations beyond home and work.

After a night of being bombed, the first thing people want the next morning is "where exactly did it come from last night," and paying for that feels natural. The life-saving part has no paywall, so nobody accused it of profiting from disaster.

There's also a referral loop: invite 3 friends to install and get 1 months of Небосхил+, up to 12 months total. One user wrote on 10-23: "I really want an Android version so my family can use it." The Android version was actually already on Google Play by 10-18; many people just didn't know.

Revenue isn't public. Reaching #194 in Ukraine's Top Grossing chart doesn't take much, so the estimate is on the order of a few thousand US dollars a month (inference, unverifiable).

### Its weak spots

- **How accurate it is depends entirely on the channels it follows.** Nearly every bad review is about the same thing: "A Shahed flew right over my head and the app said the city was fine", "the target was heading to Buchach, but the alert said Buchach village", "after 3 a.m. it stops working, probably because the people in the channels are asleep". 10-13 One review's title reads "smells like vibe coding". In the 7 oblasts with no local observers, it's blind.

- **It's not the only one.** The official app has 348k installs, and Dron Alerts and RadarUA, which entered months to half a year earlier, both have larger reach. The government announced in Sep 3 that it will add airborne threat alerts to "Дія" (the national government app). It hasn't launched yet, but once it does, it will be the biggest rival.

- **Demand follows the war.** If strikes decline or a ceasefire comes, downloads will drop fast, and the business is inherently hoping for that drop.

### If it were you

**C can teach you something, but don't follow the category itself.**

Ukraine's air-strike map space is already crowded: the official app, two or three early independent apps, a wave of new apps launched at the same time, and national players still on the way. Небосхил's edge is a single person iterating quickly plus native Apple experience, which outsiders will find hard to chase in the Ukrainian-language market while relying on Telegram data sources. It demands that you understand local channels, understand how locals talk, and stay up at night fixing bugs.

**Who it suits** : people who live somewhere "where the information is all in Telegram or group chats, with no one organizing it into a product," who spend their days in those groups themselves, and who can write native iOS.

**Not for:** outsiders who want to enter the Ukraine air-strike niche; anyone who can't build native features like Live Activity, Apple Watch or CarPlay and can only ship a web map; anyone who can't live with the responsibility of "one missed alert means a one-star review, and possibly a death."

**How to build it (copy the method, not the topic):** find a scenario that meets three conditions: it's real-time, directly tied to personal safety or money, and the information is already public but scattered across dozens of channels. Examples: power-outage schedules, wildfires and floods, border and port queues, traffic closures, earthquake aftershocks. Do it the same way: automatically read these public sources, structure the data, and answer only "does this affect the place I set, and how long do I have." Keep the critical features free; charge for replay, history and more locations. Ship the Live Activity on the lock screen and the watch app first, since in a crowded category they're the cheapest and most visible wins. List your data sources publicly. In a category where everyone complains about inaccuracy, that earns trust.

**How to get users:** through search. Your website homepage is the product itself, with a title that matches the exact phrase users search for. Use the store title and subtitle to cover the several ways locals search. Then, in the week the category makes the news and the official product is shown to have a gap, turn that gap into your headline selling point. Don't wait.

**When to launch before:** there's no fixed deadline; the window follows the events. Demand for disaster-type apps comes in waves. Launch before the peak season and get indexed by search, so you have traffic ready when something happens that week.

**Signs you're reading it wrong:** ① The attack intensity doesn't drop, yet Neboskhyl's weekly new ratings fall back before December to early-November levels (dozens a day). That means this wave was news traffic and retention didn't hold. ② A month after Diia added its aerial-threat feature, the weekly new ratings of several independent apps were cut in half. Once the national team enters the field, independent developers lose their spot. Before moving to another scenario, check whether an official body is already building there. ③ Conversely, if its Top Grossing rank stays within the top 300 after the attacks fade, it means "curiosity payment" is more durable than expected, and it's worth copying more seriously.

- **Verified** **Event/platform news: large-scale attacks plus official app coverage:** 10-17 official app added a map; 10-26 the air force explained why ballistic missiles aren't shown; 11-01 the air force recommended using the app (UNIAN/TSN/RBC). Similar apps all picked up volume around 11-03 (appstore library).

- **Verified** **App Store search / ASO:** the title and subtitle are stuffed with карта тривог / шахедів / радар / Air Raid Alert / Shahed tracker. In iTunes search these terms all rank in the top 10; News chart #2.

- **Verified** **Web SEO + PWA:** the neboskhyl.com homepage is the live map itself. Exa search for "карта шахедів онлайн" ranks it #4. The /zastosunok page routes to the App Store, Google Play and PWA.

- **Verified** **Own Telegram channel:** @neboskhyl_official auto-posts every 30 minutes with tracking links, but has only about 50 subscribers.

## Neboskhyl / Небосхил: Air Raid Alert Map (iOS id6818089429) research report

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our appstore / googleplay libraries (DuckDB, agent-im machine), iTunes lookup/search API, App Store pages and review RSS, neboskhyl.com, public Telegram channel pages, Exa/Jina web search, TikHub, x-radar.

### One line

Ukrainian indie dev Artem Kutukov (listed as OpexApps on Google Play) 2026-10-01 has a live shahed/missile map plus air raid alerts. It doesn't detect anything itself. It reads 31 public Telegram monitoring channels and official air force channels, turns the text messages into target tracks, and works out whether something is heading toward your home or office, how far away it is, and how many minutes it has. Free, with a Neboskhyl+ in-app purchase (track replay, "replay last night", altitude curves). Monthly subscription has a free first week, or a one-time purchase; users in reviews mention $5.99.

### 1. Data: how much it grew

- **iOS ratings** (appstore library, Ukraine store): 10-28 865 → 11-06 2250. Daily new ratings went from 27–51 (10-29~10-31) to 196 (11-01), 146, 235, **299 (11-04)** , 201, 196. Global total 2268, of which 2250 are in Ukraine; other countries are single digits. iTunes lookup shows 11-06 ratings with an average of 2302 stars, 4.79.

- **Charts** (appstore library, 11-06): Ukraine free overall #20, News category free chart #2, **Top Grossing overall #194** , which means people are actually buying the in-app purchases. The Ukraine App Store News chart page (Jina search results) shows the top three as Повітряна тривога (Ajax), RadarUA, and Neboskhyl.

- **Google Play** (googleplay library): package name com.opexapps.neboskhyl, listed on 10-18. Installs went from 11-02 to 11-04 over 3,631,11-05 (**16,116** , +12,485 in one day), charting since 11-02. It now charts in 17 countries across 25 charts (mostly small-country aggregate charts).

- **Peers rose the same week** (appstore library, Ukraine store, rating_velocity_7d): Ajax "Повітряна тривога" +4,992 (stock 348k); Dron Alerts +1,949 (stock 18k); RadarUA +1,328 (stock 14k); **Neboskhyl +1,307 (stock 2,250)** ; Stfalcon's Мапа тривог widget +487; eAlert +194. Since 11-03 the whole category has surged together, which means demand is rising (sustained large-scale Russian night attacks). Neboskhyl ranks fourth on absolute volume, but **it grew fastest relative to its base** (weekly new ratings ≈ 58% of its stock).

### 2. Competitors (who else does the same thing)

iTunes searches for "повітряна тривога / шахеди / карта тривог" (ua store, 11-06), plus web search:

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Neboskhyl differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Повітряна тривога (Ajax Systems, official) | iOS/Android | 2022-02-27 | 348k ratings, +4,992 weekly, #21 on the free overall chart | The national official alert app. From 10-17 it added a rough "target movement" map (announced by PM Корецький and widely covered by UNIAN, ZN.ua and others), but **it doesn't show ballistic missiles** (10-26 the air force spokesperson Ihnat explained publicly, covered by TSN, 24tv and RBC). No personal "is it flying toward my home" status. |
| Карта тривог - Dron Alerts(Volodymyr Malik) | iOS | 2026-01-30 | 18k ratings, +1,949 weekly, #2 on the free overall chart | Entered early with larger volume; takes the mass-market free route |
| Карта тривог - RadarUA(Serhii Kyrylov) | iOS + web radarua.com | 2026-07-21 | 14.4k ratings, +1,328 weekly, #6 on the free overall chart | Also an aggregated map, with a web SEO page ("карта шахедів онлайн") |
| Мапа тривог віджет(Stfalcon) | iOS | 2024-02-15 | 5,253 rating | Mostly an alert widget, no tracks |
| eAlert(Wild Pluto) | iOS | 2022-02-27 | 10k ratings | Long-running alert push, no tracks |
| Dronar / КОНТУР / Air Alert Radar / Обрій / Небо зараз / Пильно / Карта БПЛА and others | iOS | 2026-08 ~ 10 | A few to a few hundred ratings | Most of the indie apps that flooded in during the same wave have little traction |
| Diia, the national-level aerial-threat app | Planned | Announced 2026-09-03 | Not live | The national team is about to enter (reported by Interfax and Pravda) |
| Web maps: monitor (map.war-monitor.org, October beta, refreshes every 20 seconds), neptun.in.ua, kupol.in.ua, mapa.ua, dimap.live, zaliznenebo, skyalert, alarmmap, ukraine-radar.web.app | Web | various | monitor is the largest Telegram monitoring source | Web only, no native push, Dynamic Island or watch |
| The Telegram monitoring channels themselves (@war_monitor, @kpszsu, regional channels) | Telegram | From ¥2022 | Hundreds of thousands to millions of subscribers | This is Neboskhyl's **data source** , and also users' old habit: refreshing the channel every 5 minutes |

Bottom line: the category is very crowded. The official app has just added a map feature, and the national team (Diia) is coming. Neboskhyl is neither first nor largest.

### 3. Where users come from (growth levers)

1. **Platform/event news (confirmed):** from late October to early November, Russia carried out repeated large-scale drone and missile attacks. 10-17 the official app added a map; 10-26 "the official app doesn't show ballistic missiles" became national news; 11-01 the air force publicly advised people to use the app to track target movement (RBC 11-01). This string of news turned "install an app that tracks Shaheds" into a national need, and similar apps all picked up volume around 11-03 (appstore library). One of Neboskhyl's selling points, "ballistics: how many minutes until your city," fills exactly the gap people complained about in the official app.

2. **App Store search / ASO (likely, partly confirmed):** the title and subtitle keep rotating keywords. The ua store name is "Небосхил: карта тривог, радар"; other stores have used "Небосхил: карта шахедів, ракет". The English name is "Neboskhyl: Air Raid Alert Map / Shahed & missile tracker live." It claims the search terms карта тривог / шахеди / радар / air raid alert. In iTunes search these terms all rank in the top 10. The App Store "customers also bought" section pairs it with RadarUA and Флюгер.

3. **Web SEO + PWA routing (confirmed):** the neboskhyl.com homepage is the live map itself, titled "Карта шахедів і ракет онлайн — де летять зараз." In Exa search for "карта шахедів онлайн" it ranks #4, alongside the official map, neptun, RadarUA and monitor. The web pages route users to install from the App Store or Google Play, or as a PWA with web push support.

4. **Telegram own channel (confirmed, small reach)** : @neboskhyl_official auto-posts "how many targets in the air right now" every 30 minutes with a map link (tagged /go/tg-official), but it has only about 50 subscribers, so it is not the main source.

5. **Review prompting (inferred)** : average 4.79 stars, but in the last 40 written reviews, about half are negative (1–3 stars), and many complain it is "inaccurate". Star ratings and text reviews don't match, which suggests many stars come from the in-app prompt (SKStoreReviewController), where satisfied users tap stars without writing anything. So the rating count probably overstates its downloads relative to competitors. Unverified.

6. **Channels I didn't find** : TikTok (searching "небосхил / neboskhyl" returns no related videos; similar apps like kontur_map and shahediradar grew through TikTok, Neboskhyl did not), X (x-radar: 0 posts), media (Exa/Jina found no Ukrainian media coverage). Meta/TikTok ad libraries don't track it, so no results doesn't mean it isn't advertised.

### 4. Why people stay and pay

- User reviews (App Store ua RSS): "Saves me from checking the Telegram channel every 5 minutes to see what's flying" (10-30, Zaporizhzhia); "Today only Небосхил alerted me" (11-03); "Thanks for the CarPlay version, it's reassuring to have alerts in the car with my kids" (10-24); a foreign volunteer "paid $5.99, only wished for English" — the 1.4.0 version (11-01) added English.

- The paywall is smartly designed: **everything safety-related is free** (status, push, alerts, ballistics); the paid part is "curiosity" features: full flight route for each target, "replay last night", altitude curves. These are most wanted the day after a night attack, which converts naturally; ranking #194 on Top Grossing shows it earns.

- Deep Apple integration: Dynamic Island / Lock Screen Live Activity, standalone Apple Watch app plus watch face complications, CarPlay, iPad, Mac; most competitors only offer a map plus push notifications.

- Negative reviews cluster around accuracy (data comes from Telegram channels, covering 17 of 24 oblasts, some cities have no source), a dense interface, and ballistic alert sounds that are too alarming. This is a retention risk.

### 5. Differentiation

- **From "look at the map" to "answer the question I care about"** : Home/Work pins → "Is there a target flying toward me, how far, how many minutes", plus pushes like "rapid descent nearby" and "ballistics". Most rivals give you a national map and leave you to interpret it.

- **Public data methodology** : the /pro-dani page lists all 31 source channels, local observers in each oblast, and limitations. In a category where everyone complains about "inaccurate", this builds trust.

- **Fills a gap in the official app** : ballistic missile threats and countdowns (the official app explicitly does not show them).

- **Native Apple experience** : Live Activity / Watch / CarPlay.

- **Privacy and cleanliness** : no sign-up, no ads, location stays on device and is uploaded only at roughly 1 km precision.

- Did it ride a wave? **Partly, yes** . Demand spiked from the situation and from news coverage of the official app (the whole category rose together). Among a wave of new apps launched at the same time (Dronar, КОНТУР, Небо зараз and others, all with single digits to a few hundred ratings), only this one hit News #2 and Top Grossing #194. The differentiation above did it, plus web SEO and ASO catching people.

### 6. Visibility

- Revenue isn't public, there's no TrustMRR listing, and the founder isn't visible on social media; X and TikTok have no discussion, and Ukrainian media have not covered it (none found). The Telegram channel has only about 50 subscribers.

- Verdict: **few people outside know about it yet** (word of mouth is spreading among Ukrainian users, but nobody outside the country writes about it).

### VII. Copycats

- I found no one directly copying it. Many similar apps flooded in at the same time (Dronar 10-05, Пильно 10-13, Небо зараз 10-14, КОНТУР 10-16, Карта БПЛА 10-22, and a name-jacking app called "Повітряна тривога (Air Alert)" 10-29), but they are chasing the category as a whole, not copying Neboskhyl's "personal status" approach.

### VIII. What to take from it

1. The method of "aggregating public but scattered live sources (Telegram channels) → structuring → personalized answers" can transfer to other scenarios where information lives in Telegram/groups but no one has packaged it as a product (disasters, power outage schedules, traffic restrictions, port/border queues).

2. Life-saving features free, curiosity features paid (replays, tracks, curves). Monetizes without hurting goodwill.

3. The web page is the product itself (live map page = SEO landing page + PWA), then funnels users into a native app. In the week an official product is named in the news for having a gap, turn the gap into a selling point.

4. Platform-native capabilities (Live Activity / Watch / CarPlay) are cheap differentiation in a commoditized category.

### IX. Uncertainties

- Ratings are likely inflated by in-app prompts; real download scale is unverified. Whether the Play 11-05 day's +12k installs were real or a store data bucket jump cannot be confirmed.

- Whether it runs ads (Meta/Google) was not found.

- Demand depends heavily on attack intensity; a ceasefire or fewer attacks would cool it quickly. Once the national "Diia" app launches, it may be squeezed out.

- Revenue scale: only known are Top Grossing #194 (the Ukraine store has a low bar) and an in-app purchase range of $1.99–$5.99.
