# A tear-off coffee receipt: a design-school grad with 209 followers took a pour-over log to #8 on Taiwan's Top Grossing chart

**What it is** An iPhone pour-over coffee log built by a Hong Kong design-school grad. It records beans and recipes, prints a tear-off receipt for each brew, and sends you a bag of beans in the color you pick. Pro is $2.99/month.

**Why it took off** The creator posted design work in Chinese-language Threads coffee and design circles and ran a 10-day pre-order. A small batch of paying users on launch day pushed it onto category grossing charts in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and small countries with low entry barriers. There was no second wave afterward, so it hasn't really broken out yet.

**C** **How you could follow it** Skip the coffee log. Pick another hobby that sells ritual (tea, perfume, vinyl, film photography) and follow the same structure: one signature action that works as a video, hard details about real gear, and a free tier with a limit. Cold-start it with build-in-public on Threads, an App Store pre-order, and reposts from design accounts, and have a second wave ready for after launch day.

C grade: there are already 80 pour-over log apps, 51 of them launched this year. Baristro itself peaked once on launch day, and its rating count hasn't grown in 3 days. The go-to-market and paywall design are worth studying, but following this category isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Ranen Wong, a recent grad from the Hong Kong PolyU design school, built an iPhone pour-over coffee log called Baristro on his own. On launch day it reached #8 on Taiwan's Food & Drink Top Grossing chart and #2 in Belarus. It sounds like it took off, but it didn't: after 9 days it had only 7 ratings worldwide, and its rank has dropped every day. This piece explains what pushed it up, why it didn't hold, and what someone building a small, focused app can take from it.

### A post on the night of Oct 27

On Oct 27, 2026, an account on Threads called @nokkkkhimmmm._.mm posted a video: "Coffee to Glow💫 Baristro is out now on App Store. Happy brewing~" Followed by a line in Chinese: "Thanks for waiting, thank you to everyone who pre-ordered." The account has 209 followers, and its bio reads "On my way to becoming a better designer." The launch post got 52 likes and 17 replies (Threads, 11-06).

The video shows the app's signature moment: after logging a coffee, a receipt prints from the bottom of the screen, and you pull it off with a swipe.

It went live the next day. On Oct 28, Baristro charted in 12 storefronts at once: #8 on Taiwan's Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, alongside established apps like "愛料理", "Cookpad", and "Vivino"; #2 on the same chart in Belarus; #27 in Hong Kong. The creator wrote in the post: "Already in the top 100 in 5 regions including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau." At the end of the same post, he also wrote, "Now I need to get back to job hunting."

### What it is

A "warm" pour-over coffee log. The opening of the store page is the creator's own words: "There are a lot of coffee logs already, but I couldn't find one with warmth... It also records the numbers, but it isn't a lab notebook. It's about you."

The features are similar to the competition:

- Beans: roaster, origin, processing method, variety, and flavor notes. Enter the roast date and it shows "resting, peak, good, fading, stale"; enter the bag weight and it automatically subtracts the dose from each brew.

- Recipes: dose, water amount, water temperature, time, and step-by-step images. Grind size follows the real dial markings on your grinder, and the dial clicks "one notch at a time" as you turn it. The early-November 1.0.2 update added 40 more grinder models.

- Bag scanning: recognized on-device with Apple Intelligence on iOS 27, no network needed.

What sets it apart is the feel: each logged coffee prints a receipt you can tear off, and each bag of beans sends the color you chose to glow on your "coffee shelf." No account, no server connection, no ads, and the store page is marked "Data Not Collected."

Money: free to download, Pro at $2.99/month or $24.99/year. The free tier allows 2 bags of beans at once. Anyone who brews daily and keeps three or four bags at home will hit that limit quickly.

### The numbers: one spike, then a steady decline

| Storefront | 10-28 | 10-31 | 11-02 | 11-06 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | 8 | 32 | 40 | 57 |
| Hong Kong | 27 | 24 | 37 | 80 |
| Belarus | 2 | 9 | 13 | 27 |
| Malaysia | Top Free 99 | 3 | 18 | 54 |
| Croatia | Top Free 53 | — | 8 | 25 |

All are App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing charts. It never made the overall chart (10-28 through 11-06).

Three things stand out:

- **These charts have low barriers.** Belarus and Croatia have 0 ratings and still made the top 10 grossing; Taiwan's top ten was already a thin list. A new app can reach these charts by collecting a few subscriptions on its first day. Who paid those Belarus subscriptions is unknown.

- **There's only one peak.** The storefronts that charted went from 12 on day one to 11-06 of 5, and every storefront's rank has declined steadily. There has been no second wave.

- **Ratings have stalled.** 7 ratings worldwide (5 in Hong Kong, 2 in Malaysia), and 1 in the US store. 10-30 plus 4, 11-02 plus 2, 11-03 plus 2; the last three days have all been 0. Third-party estimates put monthly downloads and monthly revenue below 5K (appstoretracker, 11-06).

So the accurate summary is this: on launch day, a small batch of pre-order buyers pushed it onto a few small charts, and it hasn't broken out.

### Where users came from: three zero-cost moves

1. **The creator's own Threads.** The posts are tagged Coffee Threads and Design Threads and aimed at the small Chinese-language "coffee × design" community. The pre-order post on 10-17 got 2,000 views and 37 likes; the long post on 10-28 showed hand-drawn sketches and design thinking. The best storefronts on launch day were Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore, which matches the Chinese-language Threads audience.

2. **App Store pre-orders.** 10-17 opened pre-orders and collected them over 10 days, so downloads and payments clustered on launch day. That's the spike.

3. **Reposts from a design account.** @60fps.design, which posts motion design case studies, reposted its slider interaction on 10-30 with the caption "sliders are secretly the hardest micro interaction," with 3,400 views and 34 likes. The receipts, glowing orbs, and dial are easy to film, so they make good content.

It also appears in the "You Might Also Like" section of a similar app, Pourline, though it's unclear how much traffic that brought. Media, X, Reddit, TikTok, and Product Hunt returned nothing for it. The whole cold start amounts to an estimated few thousand impressions and a few hundred downloads, not a single viral post.

There's a precedent for this playbook: Brewwww!, built by a design team in Ningbo and launched in April 2026, also took off on Chinese-language Threads. It logs drinks bought at coffee shops. Across the regions where it charted, it now has more than 1,500 ratings, gaining 7 in 158 days, and reached #16 on the China store's free chart (App Store, 11-06). Baristro followed the same path, only six months later and for home brewing.

### Who else is fighting for it: the category is already packed with AI-era apps

On the App Store, there are 83 apps with both "coffee" and "journal / log / diary / tracker" in the name, and 51 of them launched in the last 2026 years. Search "coffee brew log" in the US store and almost every result is a similar app listed in 2026, 6–September, rated 0. Now that AI writes code, building a coffee log costs next to nothing.

| Product | Scale | How it differs from Baristro |
|---|---|---|
| Filtru(2017) | US: 3,804 ratings | An established brew guide plus log, tool-style |
| Beanconqueror (2018, open source) | 139 US ratings, free | The most parameters, connects to Bluetooth scales, feels like a lab notebook |
| Coffee Book(2020) | US: 83 ratings | Tracks 20 variables per cup |
| BeanBook(2025) | US: 30 ratings | Also scans bean bags, but needs internet, with discovery and community |
| Cupsight, Bloom, Dial and others (2026) | single-digit ratings | Similar features, weak aesthetics; Cupsight is writing SEO comparison posts |
| Ji Yi Bei, Kafei Ren (China store) | 7,615 / 452 ratings, China store Top Grossing #7 / #3 | Logs how many cups and how much caffeine, with a sticker calendar check-in |

Baristro has nothing unique in its features. It only gets noticed because "you can see a designer made it stroke by stroke." Among 51 peers, that's what gets shared. But aesthetics bought a moment of design-circle attention, not sustained downloads.

### Will the creator keep going?

Not necessarily. On LinkedIn he calls himself an interaction designer, PolyU Design class of 2026. A post on the day after launch says "I have to go back to job hunting first." This looks more like a product built as a portfolio piece. For him it has already worked: an app he can take to interviews that charted in a top list. For anyone thinking of following, it likely won't become a rival that keeps escalating, but it also shows this category can't support much ambition.

### If it were you

**C: Worth learning from, not worth chasing.** The brew-log category is crowded with a low ceiling, and Baristro itself hasn't broken out. What's worth taking is its cold-start approach and paid-feature design, not the category.

- **Who it suits** : individuals with strong design skills who want to make a "small but beautiful" paid tool app as a portfolio piece or side project, and who have a bit of presence in Chinese Threads or a niche interest community (a few hundred followers is enough).

- **Who it doesn't suit** : people who want to make a living from a coffee log; people who can't do visuals and motion and can only copy features (that's the #52 peer); people who want the English-speaking Western market (Filtru and Beanconqueror already hold it, plus plenty of SEO players).

- **How to do it** : stop making coffee logs. Pick a different hobby with the same ritual, photo appeal, and willingness to pay for good looks: tea, perfume, vinyl, film photography, plants, wine. Follow Baristro's structure: a signature gesture that works as video (like tearing off a receipt), a hard detail that matches real gear (like grinder markings), no accounts and everything on-device. Limit the free tier by how many things you can manage at once, not by locking features; heavy users who hit the cap are exactly the ones most willing to pay.

- **How to get users** : copy its three steps. Build in public on Threads with interest and design tags, showing drafts and interactions. Before launch, run an App Store pre-order for 1–2 weeks so launch-day downloads concentrate. Cut the best-looking interaction into a short video and pitch it to design accounts that cover motion and UI case studies. On launch day, aim for a spike on the Top Grossing chart in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or a small country, then use the screenshot for another round. The real gap Baristro left is the second wave: within two weeks of launch you need new content or a new version to sustain the volume.

- **How soon to move** : there's no hard window. The only time-sensitive factor is on-device AI. Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 makes "scan and log" possible without server costs, and in 2027 years it will be standard. Moving early means claiming the "first to do it this way" position.

- **What would show you read it wrong** : (1) if Baristro has a second wave before December, with ratings rising again daily and Taiwan or Hong Kong Top Grossing rank back in the top 20, that means heavy users in this category pay more than expected and the brew log deserves another look; (2) conversely, if your version of this playbook can't break into a small-market top chart on launch day, Chinese Threads design circles are already overused and you need another channel.

## Baristro: Coffee Log (ios_6818436823) research report

> In one line: an iPhone pour-over coffee log built solo by Ranen Wong, a PolyU Design class-of-2026 graduate from Hong Kong. Its selling points are "each logged cup prints a tearable receipt" and "each bag of beans glows in its own color." The verdict first: **it hasn't actually broken out yet.** The Top Grossing ranks in the data card come from the Food & Drink category on small-market charts, where the bar is low. Using pre-orders, a launch post, and design-account reshares on Chinese Threads, the creator got a first wave of downloads, and a few people subscribing was enough to chart. Over 9 days since launch, it has only 7 ratings worldwide, and its ranks keep sliding. What's worth watching is its approach and aesthetics: a designer treating a portfolio piece as a product and getting cold-start traction from the design community on Threads.

Storefronts checked: all 115 storefronts in the appstore database were scanned. Baristro charted in 17 storefronts in total. Focus was on tw, hk, mo, sg, my, by, and hr, with us, gb, ca, and de also checked.

### 1. The basics (data)

| items | value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-10-28 (App Store pre-orders opened around 10-17) | iTunes lookup; creator's Threads 10-17 posts |
| Version | 1.0 → 1.0.1 (10-28) → 1.0.2 (10-30) | appstore library app_day |
| System requirements | iOS 26.0+; bag scanning needs iOS 27 and an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence | Store page |
| Language | English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Chinese, 7 languages in total | iTunes lookup |
| Pricing | Free download; Pro $2.99/month, $24.99/year; the free tier allows up to 2 bags of beans at a time | Store page |
| Privacy | No account, no server connection, no ads; the store lists "Data Not Collected" | Store page |
| Rating | 7 ratings worldwide (hk 5, my 2); 1 in the us store, 5.0 stars | appstore database 11-06; store page |
| Third-party estimate | Monthly downloads <5K, monthly revenue <$5K | appstoretracker.com |

#### Chart trajectory (all on the Food & Drink category's Top Grossing chart; never on the overall chart)

| Store | 10-28 | 10-31 | 11-02 | 11-06 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| tw | **8** | 32 | 40 | 57 |
| hk | 27 | 24 | 37 (peak at #11-01 16) | 80 |
| by (Belarus) | **2** | 9 | 13 | 27 |
| my | Top Free 99 | **3** (Top Grossing) | 18 | 54 |
| hr (Croatia) | Top Free 53 | — | **8** (Top Grossing) | 25 |
| sg | 29 | 52 | — | Not charted |
| mo | Top Free 45 | Top Free 160 | — | Not charted |

Source: appstore library app_day, 2026-10-28 to 11-06. Charted storefronts dropped from 12 on day one to 5 by 11-06. It also briefly appeared in de (Top Grossing 188), gb (61→176), ca (99→194), cr, cy, lt, pa, sv, mx, id, vn, th, ph, bh, almost always outside the Top Free top 100 or the Top Grossing top 100.

**How to read this table** :

- On day one it ranked #8 in tw Top Grossing, with older apps like 愛料理, Cookpad, Vivino and Wine-Searcher around it on subscriptions (appstore library chart_rank, tw, 6023, 10-28). The Taiwan Food & Drink Top Grossing top ten is already a thin chart, so a new app picking up a few subscriptions on day one can break into it.

- In storefronts like by, hr and my, it had 0 to 2 ratings yet reached the top 10 of Top Grossing. That suggests the category Top Grossing bar in these stores may be only one or two subscriptions (inference, unverified). It hit #2 in Belarus on day one, and there is no way to tell who paid.

- Rankings in every storefront drift steadily down, with no second wave. In other words, the people who bought on day one (mostly pre-orders) were not followed by any new volume.

- Ratings went 10-30 +4, 11-02 +2, 11-03 +2, and after 11-03 it sat at 0 for 3 days straight.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

Pour-over coffee logs are a **very crowded long-tail niche** . In the full appstore library catalog, 83 apps have names containing coffee plus one of journal, log, diary or tracker, and **51 of them were released in 2026** (appstore library app and app_name, 11-06). Searching "coffee brew log" on the iTunes store returns almost entirely 2026 listings from 6 to September, rated 0, of the same type (Coffee Brew Log: Barista, CoffeeBrewLog, MyBrew, Cupsight, CoffeeLog, BrewCard...). It looks like a batch of AI-written code that flooded the store.

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Baristro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Filtru | iOS | 2017-01 | us 3,804 ratings; charted in 66 storefronts' Food & Drink charts; co Top Grossing #3 | An established brewing guide plus log, leaning toward tutorials and recipes, with a tool-style interface |
| Beanconqueror | iOS, Android, open source | 2018-12 | us 139 ratings; open source, completely free, can connect to a Bluetooth scale | The most parameters, like a lab notebook; Baristro explicitly says it is "not an experiment notebook" |
| Coffee Journal - BeanBook | iOS, web | 2025-06 | us 30 ratings; AI scans bean bags and can also discover new beans | Also scans bags, but requires a connection and has discovery and community features; Baristro stays on-device and offline |
| Coffee Book: Brew Journal | iOS | 2020-06 | us 83 ratings | Tracks 20 variables per cup, aiming for precision |
| Cupsight / Bloom / Brote / Dial and others, new releases from the past 2026 years | iOS | 2026-03 to 09 | Single-digit ratings, and some are writing SEO comparison articles (cupsight.app) | Similar features, but the aesthetics and emotional appeal are weaker than Baristro's; Cupsight is doing SEO, while Baristro does none |
| Brewwww! (Ningbo Bululu) | iOS | 2026-04 | Charted in 1,514 store ratings total, 7 days +158; China Top Free #16; US 71 ratings | **The closest predecessor** : also made by a designer, also cold-started on Chinese-language Threads. But it logs drinks you have at cafes, with Polaroid-style photos, time stamps, a globe page and check-ins at partner cafes, leaning toward social and going out |
| 記一杯 / Cafeor / 杯杯记 | iOS (mainly the China store) | 2024–2026 | Ji Yi Bei has 7,615 ratings, China store Top Grossing #7; Kafei Ren has 452, China store Top Grossing #3 | Logs how many cups you drank and caffeine intake, with sticker-calendar style check-ins. Baristro logs the beans and recipes you brew at home |
| Web tools by James Hoffmann and Barista Hustle, plus Notion templates | Web | — | — | Free, but not an app |

**Summary** : functionally, none of its features are unique (bean inventory, roast-date freshness, recipe steps, flavor wheel, bag scanning, all the competitors have them). What sets it apart is only two things: first, the emotional visuals and tactile feel (tearable receipts, glowing color balls, grinder dials that turn with an audible click per step, real calibration for 40 grinder models); second, "no account, no internet connection, bag scanning done on-device with Apple Intelligence."

### 3. Where users come from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| The author's own Threads (the Chinese design and coffee circles) | @nokkkkhimmmm._.mm, **only 209 followers** . 10-17 pre-order post: 2K views, 37 likes; 10-27 launch post (with video): 52 likes, 17 replies; 10-28 long post on design thinking, sharing hand-drawn sketches, saying it has "reached the top 100 in 5 regions including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau". That thread got only 63 views and 26 likes; the thank-you post to Taiwanese and Ukrainian users got 33 likes. All posts are tagged Coffee Threads and Design Threads. | Yes |
| App Store pre-order | 10-17 pre-orders open, and 10-27 the developer posts "thanks to everyone who pre-ordered." It charted in 12 stores on day one, which fits pre-order users all downloading on launch day. | Yes |
| Design account reposts | @60fps.design (an account that posts motion and interaction case studies) 10-30 reposted its slider interaction with the caption "sliders are secretly the hardest micro interaction", 3.4K views, 34 likes | Yes |
| The "You Might Also Like" placement | Baristro appears in the "You Might Also Like" list on the Pourline: Coffee Brew Timer store page | Yes, but how much traffic it brought is unknown |
| Media, X, Reddit, TikTok, Product Hunt | x-radar found 0 posts mentioning "Baristro" in the last 30 days; TikHub returns no related videos; Jina and Exa find no media coverage or Reddit threads | None |
| Paid acquisition, ASO | Nothing in the ad libraries, but that doesn't mean it didn't spend. The name "Baristro：咖啡日誌" puts keywords in the title, which is the most basic ASO. | Inferred |

The data card says "the receipt UI post was widely reposted and liked," but this **overstates it** : the highest post got only 52 likes, and the designer repost had 3.4K views. The scale is thousands of impressions and a few hundred downloads, not a viral post.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **Posting in the right circles** : on Chinese-language Threads, the small "coffee × design" circles in Hong Kong and Taiwan respond well to "tactile small tools." U Magazine HK 2026-02 wrote about "the coffee-logging app that recently sparked discussion on Threads," and Brewwww! also rose in this same circle. Baristro's day-one charting was strongest in tw, hk, mo and sg, which matches the distribution of the Chinese-language Threads community.

2. **Pre-orders concentrated volume on one day** : a 10-day pre-order window, with conversions concentrated on launch day, produced a spike in several low-bar category Top Grossing charts (tw #8, by #2). That was the only peak; it declined steadily afterward.

3. **The aesthetics are themselves shareable content** : receipts, glowing balls and dials turn into video content, which is why design accounts like @60fps.design reposted it unprompted. In a niche being flooded with AI-made clones, "you can tell a designer crafted this by hand" is itself something people share.

4. **The paywall is well designed** : the free version allows only 2 bean bags open at once, so people who brew every day hit the cap quickly. Bag scanning requires iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, which lines up with the on-device model wave after the 2026 September iOS 27 release. That is why it shows up on the Top Grossing charts despite few ratings.

### 5. Was differentiation what made it work

The differentiation is "warmth and tactile feel": the numbers are still recorded, but it says it is not an experiment notebook. Concretely: the receipt ritual, colors that represent moods, carefully crafted micro-interactions, plus privacy-first and fully on-device. **That is the only reason it's visible at all** : without the aesthetics, it would be just one of the 51 same-type apps released in 2026, with no chance of being reposted. But the aesthetics only earned a round of looks from the design community, not sustained downloads (ratings haven't moved in 3 days, and rankings have dropped for 9 days straight). The author's 10-28 posts also say "I have to go back to job hunting first," and LinkedIn lists them as an interaction designer, PolyU Design class of 2026. **This looks more like a product built as a portfolio piece** , and there may not be sustained investment behind it.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **few people know about it yet** . Media, X, Reddit and TikTok have not mentioned it; the author's Threads has 209 followers; revenue is not public.

- Copycats: none found specifically copying it. Conversely, it and Brewwww! tell the same story in the same Threads circle, and Brewwww! came out about half a year earlier.

### VII. What to take away

- The cold-start playbook of "designer build-in-public + Chinese-language Threads + App Store pre-orders" costs almost nothing, and a few hundred followers were enough to produce a day-one spike on Top Grossing charts in Hong Kong, Taiwan and small countries.

- In a category flooded with AI-made clones, turning a ritual action (tearing a receipt) into the product's signature earned free reposts from design accounts.

- Limiting the free version by "how many bean bags open at once" is more natural than limiting features, and the users who hit the cap are exactly the heavy users most willing to pay.

- Get the hard details that users care about right: real calibration for dozens of grinder models (1.0.2 more added, 42 models), which is what keeps pour-over enthusiasts around.

### 8. What's still uncertain
