A pudding that bounces back when pressed, 44k people watched: a Japanese indie dev put squishy toys into a phone

What it is An iOS app for squishing squishies (soft squeeze toys) on your phone: press a spot and it dents, slowly rebounds, you can crack the wax shell, and you can feel it through a bag. The shapes are Japanese foods and small animals like daifuku, pudding, and melon pan.

Why it took off Squishies got popular again in Japan 2026 years ago. The app makes the feel and sound very real, and the developer posted screen recordings without music on their own TikTok account. They look like real-object ASMR videos, and two of them each got 30–40k views, which brought the first downloads.

BHow you could follow it Use the same playbook in a different market: first build the Android version for Japan that it lacks, or remake it around the squishy shapes popular in Korea, Taiwan, or the US. Get the local dent, slow rebound, and wax-shell cracking feel right, post music-free screen recordings on TikTok every day, keep it free with no forced ads, and earn from gacha tickets and seasonal bundles.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, the barrier is low, and no one is doing Android or Japanese-shape versions. Users in the reviews are directly asking for Android. But it has only a few dozen ratings, charging only started at 11-02, and whether it makes money is completely unverified. Globally, the same theme is already flooded with ad-supported hyper-casual games. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

A solo developer in Japan built SQUISH LAB, an app for squishing virtual squishies on your phone. It's been live for just over three weeks with only a few dozen ratings, but almost all its users came from one squishy video on the developer's own TikTok with no BGM. The topic is riding a real squishy revival in Japan, the feel and sound are convincing enough that the screen recording works as ASMR content, and monetization just started. Still tiny, but it shows the pattern: take a trending physical toy onto the phone, post screen recordings on TikTok posing as real-toy videos, and one person can pull in the first users.

「I got the app after seeing it on TikTok」

On Oct 27, the developer posted a video on their TikTok account @wakemode_jp: a pudding-shaped squishy, press with a finger, it goes 「ぐにゅっ」 and slowly rebounds after release. The caption is three lines: 「What happens when you press this pudding?」「BGM なし。アプリの操作音をそのまま使っています」 (no music, just the app's own tap sounds). The account had about a thousand followers, and earlier videos mostly got a few hundred views. This one hit 44,174 views and 1,191 likes by 11-06 (TikTok, 11-06).

The first comment asked 「What's the app called?」, the second 「Is it free?」, then 「Does it work on Android?」 and 「No Android yet…」.

Two days later, a five-star review appeared on the Japan App Store, opening with 「TikTokを見てアプリを入れました‼️」 (I saw it on TikTok and installed it). The reviewer listed seven strengths: good sound, the right amount of dent, you can feel it through a bag, it's cut open when you take it out of the bag, you can customize it, you can stretch it sideways, and every finger leaves a mark. Then three requests: more bag styles, wax-shell versions in the customizer, and an adjustable wax thickness.

On Nov 2, the developer shipped a major update: every shape can now get a wax shell and a bag, with adjustable wax thickness and bag types, plus 6 new shapes. The update video got 37,292 views and 127 shares. The reviewer commented under it: 「My review turned into an update, so happy 😭」.

What it is

A squishy simulator app (Japanese: スクイーズ, soft squeeze toys), iOS only, listed on 2026-10-12, developer credited as KANON ISHIGAMI. The store description is detailed:

  • Only the pressed spot 「じわっ」 sinks in, and it takes several seconds to slowly rebound (スローライズ, slow rise). Pinch two fingers apart to stretch it, and twist to wring it.
  • Wax-coated versions 「パキッ」 crack when pressed, and the pieces break off one by one. Tap 「重新涂」 (recoat) to reset as many times as you like.
  • Vibration and sound change with press speed and depth. Squeeze it in a plastic bag and you hear the bag's 「かさかさ」 rustle.
  • The shapes are the Japanese favorites: 食パン (toast), 大福 (mochi), プリン (pudding), メロンパン (melon bread), どら焼き (dorayaki), おにぎり (rice ball), plus strawberry, matcha, and mugwort flavors and seasonal limited editions; also cats, bears, rabbits, and paw pads.
  • You can make your own: shape → flavor → feel → face → sparkles → name. There's also one free gacha pull per day.

Free, no forced ads. Monetization for the 11-02 version only started with 1.0.3: 「はじめてパック」 (first-time pack: 5 gacha tickets plus gold sparkles, one purchase per account), seasonal sets where you see the contents before buying, and rewarded-video gacha capped at 3 pulls a day.

Where users come from: the developer's own account, and a topic that fits

The developer has 4 apps, all launched between 2026 and 9 November: 信用卡账单管理クレスケ (credit card bill tracker, 0 ratings), ねこ目覚まし (a cat-wakes-you alarm, 2), SQUISH LAB (26), and Memon (reminder notes, 0). Their TikTok account also promotes a cat focus timer called 「ねこと作業中」. Every app's demo videos rotate through the same account, and the bio links to a collection landing page that says 「pick SQUISH LAB in the link」.

This account posted rabbit memes, spot-the-difference mini games, and follow-for-follow posts for account warming through August. Starting late September it switched to its own apps. Same method, same account: the alarm and timer videos got a few hundred views, while the squishy videos occasionally broke tens of thousands. The difference is the topic: a squishy screen recording makes you want to touch it, and an alarm doesn't.

Squishies are back for 2026. Faire's holiday toy trends report says squishies may be the most talked-about toy this year, with over 1.9M posts on TikTok. Japanese site dotate.co.jp's headline is straight up 「スクイーズが再ブーム! 2026」. MELOJOY opened its first physical store in the world in Harajuku in Sep 9, and at iBLOOM's Harajuku store, they hand out numbers when it gets crowded. Physical stock means lines, restocking, and spending money. On the phone, squeezing costs nothing.

His video format is fixed: no music, only the app's tap sounds. The frame shows a finger pressing, slowly rebounding, and the wax shell cracking, every post tagged #音フェチ (sound fetish). It looks nearly identical to real-squishy ASMR content on TikTok.

No ad buys, creator collaborations, or press coverage found. Nothing on X about it in the last ~30 days. The traffic is just his own account.

Who it's competing with

Plenty of people have turned physical squishies into phone apps over the past 2026 years, but they're aiming at different things:

Numbers from Google Play and the App Store, data as of 11-05/06.

Most are hyper-casual, ad-heavy, built around opening and merging. Only SQUISH LAB designs shapes for Japanese taste, nails the feel, and skips forced ads. As far as I can see, it's the only one in the Japan store. I also haven't found anyone copying it.

What it got right

  1. Topic chosen on the trend. Same person, same account: only the app riding the squishy comeback took off.
  2. The product is the content. The feel and sound are real enough that an unedited screen recording works as an ASMR video.
  3. Localized aesthetics. The same topic, but others did Western or Southeast Asian flavors with ads. This one does mochi, pudding, and melon bread, in line with Japan's physical bestsellers.
  4. Listens to users. Requests from users 10-29 were shipped in 11-02, with a dedicated update video that became the second hit.
  5. Build reviews first, then charge. The first three weeks were completely free with no ads, which built a group of people who pull gacha daily (one review: 「Daily gacha pulls are part of my routine」). Only then came the starter pack and seasonal sets. Seasonal limited flavors suit constant new releases.

If it were you

Verdict: B. Worth a try, the opportunity is there, but it's still too small and monetization is unproven. The most obvious gap is Android: both viral videos had people asking about it, and the top-liked comment under 11-02 was 「Please make it on Android too」 (23 likes), while SQUISH LAB is iOS only.

Who it suits: mobile developers who can build touch feedback, physical deformation, and sound (Unity or native), one or two people; ideally with a feel for a specific market, since squishy styles differ across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the US. Someone willing to post screen recordings on TikTok every day.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who plans to buy installs or push ads to scale (the dumpling-opening crowd has already saturated Android and you can't outspend them); anyone who can't build 「sinks where you press, slowly rebounds」 feel. A version that just plays an animation on tap won't look like a real toy on screen, and the videos won't take off.

How to do it:

  • Use its playbook in a different place: an Android version for the Japan market (it doesn't exist yet, and commenters are asking), or a set rebuilt for Korea, Taiwan, or the US using each market's local squishy hits (US: butter and dumplings; Taiwan: wax shells).
  • The core is one thing: feel. Local dents, slow rebound, stretching, wax shell cracking, bag sounds, and vibration that changes with press force.
  • Free, no forced ads. Revenue comes from gacha tickets, first-top-up bundles, and seasonal packs.

How they acquire users: open a TikTok account and post one or two App screen recordings a day. No music, keep the in-app sounds, and tag #音フェチ / #asmr / #squishy or similar. Each clip demos one action (press, pull, peel the wax shell). Collect requests in the comments, then post "the update you asked for is here" once it ships. Warm up the account first, then push. Whichever shape takes off, make more of that shape.

Timing: this squishy wave peaked in the second half of 2026, and physical toys sell best in the holiday gift season. Faire lists them as a holiday toy trend, so a version you can post video about should be ready before end of January. SQUISH LAB could ship an Android version at any time, so the Android window in the Japan store is probably only a month or two (inference).

What would mean you read it wrong:

  • SQUISH LAB's ratings stalled around thirty over the next two weeks, and it fell out of the top 300 in the Japan store. That suggests the two videos drove a short spike, not sustained demand.
  • A month after its seasonal pack launched, it still couldn't crack the top 500 of the Japan Entertainment Top Grossing chart (estimate). Going ad-free and monetizing through gacha doesn't bring in the money.
  • SQUISH LAB ships an Android version, or a team like Wakppuball, which already has traction, releases a Japanese-style shape version and charts in Japan. Then the Japan opening is gone and you have to switch countries.
  • New #squishy posts on TikTok drop noticeably. The trend is fading, and apps like this go cold with it.

SQUISH LAB - スクイーズ (iOS id6819909042) research report

Date 2026-11-06. Data sources: appstore / googleplay libraries (agent-im, DuckDB), iTunes lookup and Japan store review RSS, TikHub (TikTok), Jina search and page text, x-radar.

One line

A Japanese indie developer's "スクイーズ (squishy, squeeze toy)" touch simulator app: press anywhere and it dents, release and it slowly rebounds. You can peel the surface's wax shell, squeeze through a plastic bag, and there are Japanese food and animal shapes, custom shape-making, and gacha collecting. Launched 2026-10-12, it only has traction in Japan, and it's still very small: 23 ratings total, +7 in the last 20 days, best rank #164 on the Japan Entertainment Top Free chart.

1. Data

  • Ratings (appstore library, Japan store): 10-29 2 → 10-31 5 → 11-04 13 → 11-05 19 → 11-06 23. iTunes lookup shows 26 ratings, averaging 4.96.
  • Charts: only the Japan Entertainment Top Free chart (best rank #164). It hasn't charted on Top Grossing, and no other country has listed it.
  • Version: 1.0.3 (2026-11-02). This version is the first to add a store: 'Hajimete Pack' (5 gacha tickets plus gold heart sparkles, one purchase per account), seasonal bundles (no gacha, you see the contents before buying), and watch-an-ad gacha (up to 3 times a day, on top of the 1 free daily pulls). So paid features only started 11-02, and no revenue is visible yet.
  • The store listing only sets the language to EN, though the interface is in Japanese. The support page is on GitHub Pages (cann10.github.io/squishlab-site).

2. Developer: one person, a ChatGPT-built site, and only this app of their four apps has taken off.

  • Developer KANON ISHIGAMI has 4 apps, all released between 2026 9 and November (iTunes lookup): クレスケ (credit card bill tracker, 09-16,0 ratings), ねこ目覚まし (cat alarm clock, 10-01,2 ratings), SQUISH LAB (10-12,26 ratings), and Memon (reminder notes, 11-03,0 ratings).
  • The TikTok account @wakemode_jp (display name 「とざわ / 兎沢」, 1,139 followers, 81 posts) has a bio linking 「まいにちアプリ」, a landing page bundling 4 apps, hosted on *.chatgpt.site (read via r.jina.ai).
  • The account spent 2026-08 posting bunny memes, spot-the-difference mini-games, and 「フォロバ100%」 (follow-back) posts to warm up. From late September it switched to demo videos for the developer's own apps (all of its posts pulled via TikHub).
  • Takeaway: this is one person's approach of "build several small apps and promote each on their own TikTok account." SQUISH LAB is the only one of the four that took off. The others are utility and lifestyle apps with no "I want to squish it after watching" visual hook.

3. Where users come from: two TikTok videos on the developer's own account

  • Rating growth followed these two videos: 10-31 went from 5 to 11-04 ratings, and 13 from 11-05 to 19 (appstore library).
  • Japan-store reviews (App Store RSS) 10-29: "I installed it after seeing it on TikTok." Others praise the sound, the satisfying squish, being able to feel it through the bag, and building their own shapes, and one says "pulling a gacha every day became my routine."
  • The videos use no background music. They keep the in-app sounds, and the footage shows a finger pressing down, slowly rebounding, and the wax shell cracking. This is exactly the ASMR style that physical squishies dominate on TikTok right now, just with App screen recordings in place of real toys.
  • No ads, creator partnerships, press coverage, or X discussion found (x-radar search for "SQUISH LAB" returned 30 results from the last 0 days). The #SQUISHLAB hashtag on TikTok is mostly physical squishy shops with the same name (The Squish Lab, etc.) and unrelated to this app.

4. Timing: squishy's 2026 comeback, with Japan at its peak

  • Faire's 2026 holiday toy trends: squishy may be the most-discussed toy trend of 2026, with 1.9M+ posts on TikTok (faire.com/blog).
  • Japan: dotate.co.jp's "Squeeze Is Booming Again! 2026" notes that after the late 2010s, squeezes came back in 2026; MELOJOY 2026-09-09 opened the world's first physical store in Harajuku; iBLOOM's Harajuku store hands out numbers when it's crowded; new types like wax-shell "パキパキスクイーズ", water-feel and silicone squeezes keep getting posted on TikTok.
  • Physical toys mean queues, restocks, and spending money. Phone simulation costs nothing. ZazGames pitches its own app with "no mess, no waiting for a restock" (appbrain). SQUISH LAB's food shapes (食パン, 大福, プリン, メロンパン) belong to the same family as the shapes behind iBLOOM and MELOJOY's Japanese hits.

Summary: The 'put a physical squishy into your phone' lane has been crowded for 2026 years. Most entries are hyper-casual, ad-monetized games from the West and Southeast Asia, with a Korean team focused on wax-shell balls for Hong Kong and Taiwan. Built specifically for Japanese taste (Japanese food and animal shapes) and chasing faithful real-toy feel: in our library, the Japan store only shows SQUISH LAB.

6. Differentiation

  1. Feel recreation: Only the pressed spot sinks, and the rebound takes several seconds (slow-rise); you can stretch it with two fingers and twist it; softness and rebound speed differ for each shape; vibration and sound change with press speed and depth; you can hear a plastic-bag rustle when touching through the bag. Similar apps mostly just make a tap trigger an animation.
  2. Japanese shapes: shokupan, yaki-mochi, daifuku, melon bread, dorayaki, onigiri, plus strawberry, matcha, mugwort flavors and seasonal limited editions, in line with Japanese hit physical squishies like iBLOOM and MELOJOY.
  3. Restrained monetization: No forced ads; ads only play when users actively tap 'watch a video for a gacha draw', and the marketing copy says 'Free・No ads'. Revenue comes from gacha tickets, first-purchase bundles, and seasonal sets. Similar apps (Wakppuball, Waxy, the dumpling unboxing group) all carry banner ads.
  4. Build your own shape: shape → flavor → feel → face → sparkles → name; plus gacha collecting gives a reason to come back every day. Reviews mention 'drawing gacha every day is routine'.

Is that why it took off? Partly. What actually drove downloads was two TikToks on the developer's own account, each over 30k views, and those videos went viral because the screen recording itself works like a real-object ASMR: a pudding pressed down and slowly rebounding, the crack of a wax shell breaking. So a faithful feel and sound are both the product and the content. But the product alone isn't enough: the same person pushed 3 other apps with the same approach and none took off, so riding a trend that's already hot matters just as much.

7. Visibility

Still hardly anyone knows about it. Total 23–26 ratings, reaching only #164 on the Japan Entertainment Top Free chart; no revenue data, and no one has posted about earnings; no press coverage; 0 discussions on X; TikTok traffic only comes from the developer's own account (peak 44k views). Searching 'SQUISH LAB' mostly returns physical squishy shops with the same name.

8. Copycats

No one found that is clearly copying it. Several others were working on the same theme during the same period (Waxy 10-22, スクイーズキャッチャー 10-06, Squishdrop, My Squishy World, munyunyu_app), but each was riding the same wave, not imitating it.

9. What others can learn

  • Turning the physical ASMR trend into an app, and using app screen recordings as TikTok content: no background music, the operation sounds kept in, so it looks just like physical ASMR videos. Viewers who see it want to touch it themselves, which creates the download motive.
  • One person makes several small apps and rotates them through the same TikTok account, doubling down on whichever one takes off. 11-02's big update was followed by an update video that got 37k views.
  • Localized aesthetics: The same theme, when made by Western and Southeast Asian vendors, becomes hyper-casual with ads. Here, the focus is on food shapes and delicate feel that Japanese players like, and there are no direct competitors in the Japan store.
  • Monetization: Start free with no ads to build word of mouth, then add gacha tickets, first-purchase offers, and seasonal sets. Seasonal limited flavors naturally support ongoing new releases.

10. Still unclear

  • It launched at 11-02 paid, so conversion and revenue are completely unknown; the rating base is too small, so whether growth can hold needs another 1–2 weeks to see.
  • The 60k installs for Squishlab: Butter Squishy on the recall card are not verified in our library; the relationship between ワクシー (teostudio) and Wakppuball / Waxy is unverified.
  • iTunes search was rate-limited (429), so we couldn't exhaustively enumerate similar Japan-store apps via store search and relied only on the library and web search. Similar Japan-store apps named in the recall card, such as スクイーズ王国, さわる, and ぷりん, were not verified one by one.
  • Not checked whether it's also posted on Instagram, Xiaohongshu, or YouTube Shorts.
