# Snapping a photo at a flea market stall: a solo French developer's resale app hit #3 in Shopping Top Grossing within two weeks, thanks to a very low chart bar

**What it is** A photo-based pricing app for French flea market flippers: snap an item and it gives you the resale price from current eBay listings, the most you should pay to buy it, and a 10-point deal score. It also writes your Vinted / Leboncoin listing copy and tracks your books. €59.99 a year.

**Why it took off** The French Shopping Top Paid chart has a very low bar: a few dozen annual subscriptions gets you into the top ten. The developer is a flipper himself in the Grenoble area. Before launch he pulled in test users to post five-star reviews on day one, then got small insider creators to feature it. A batch of 7-day trials converted at once, and the app pushed up to #3.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another French version. If you're in a resale scene somewhere, pick a market with a strong flea market culture and no localized product yet, such as Italy, Spain, the Netherlands or Japan. Copy its full flow, price off local second-hand platforms' sold prices, cold-start through insider test users and small creators, and ship before the spring market season of 2027.

Grade C: the product is well-scoped and the playbook is clear, so it's worth studying. But it has only a few dozen sales. Its ranking came from a low-bar chart and insider connections that followers won't have. Bigger look-alikes already exist in English and in French, the features can be copied in two weeks, and winter is the slow season. Few people know about it yet

Oct 21 BrocScan launched on the French App Store. It's for people who browse flea markets: take a photo and it tells you what the item will resell for and the most you should pay to make it worthwhile. In 12 days it climbed to #3 on the French Shopping Top Paid chart. But across all stores it has only 14 ratings, and it has stayed outside the top 128 on the free chart. This piece covers what it got right, how the ranking happened, whether the playbook travels to other countries, and why the chart position overstates it.

### Four five-star reviews on launch day

On the day of launch in Oct 21, a user named IslamBeni posted a five-star review:

> J'attendais sa sortie avec impatience. Je l'ai testée ce matin en brocante et j'ai déjà déniché 5 belles affaires que je viens de remettre en vente. — I've been waiting for this to come out. I tried it at a brocante this morning and already found 5 good pieces, which I've just put up for sale.

Three more five-stars came the same day, one saying "used it at a brocante last week", which was before the app was on the store. The next day another arrived: "Went to a brocante during the trial, and what I bought that day paid back the annual fee. Two months later, my money has quadrupled." But the app had only been live for a day.

The reviewer names are telling too: Cyril38888, Le Y38000, lasheytanna3838, Isacbn38. 38 is the department number for Isère, and 38000 is the postal code for Grenoble. Developer Lucas Aubailly lives in Sassenage, just outside Grenoble, and his resale account is @lucasresell.38. So far, all 11-06,14 ratings are 5 stars. It's almost certain the early praise came mostly from the developer's own resale circle and test users (inference, high confidence).

### What it is

Brocantes and vide-greniers are French flea markets and clearance sales that rotate through towns on weekends. Many people shop them and resell on Vinted or Leboncoin as a side income. BrocScan covers the whole process:

- **At the stall** : snap a photo and you don't need to ask the seller for a price. It looks up current eBay listings and gives you a resale price and a "most you should pay" figure. Enter the seller's asking price and it scores the deal on a 10-point scale and works out your possible profit.

- **Avoiding traps** : for items often counterfeited, like sneakers, leather goods, perfume and headphones, it lists what to check at the stall. Scratches, wear or damage can be marked, and the estimate adjusts. For broken phones and consoles, it prices off actual sales of broken units.

- **Selling** : choose the platform (Vinted, Leboncoin, eBay, Facebook) and it writes a title and description in that platform's style, copyable with one tap.

- **Bookkeeping** : it logs monthly buys, sells and profit, lets you set monthly goals, and sends a "this week's report" every Sunday.

- **Finding markets** : it lists nearby brocantes by distance, sends a reminder the day before, and offers one-tap navigation.

The store page has a line: "Pas assez d'annonces pour un prix fiable ? BrocScan te le dit plutôt que d'inventer." It means that when there are too few listings for a reliable price, it says so rather than making one up. It is French-only and iPhone-only.

### Where the money comes from

Subscription only. Annual is €59.99, marked "−50%", with a free trial capped at 40 scans. Monthly is €9.99. Both cap at 100 scans a month. The update notes show that in its first few days it was priced at €69.99 annual and €12.99 monthly, then dropped to current prices. Over two weeks it shipped about 9 versions. The latest, 1.1.2 (11-06), lets you start without signing up, personalizes by your name and goals, and puts "what other users say" inside the app. All of these changes aim to convert trials to paid.

What it sells is "pays for itself in one Sunday." Reviewers say so, and the creators who recommend it say so too. Users seem to see it not as a pricing tool but as a floor under their side income.

### How it reached #3

| Date | French Shopping Top Paid | French Shopping Top Free | Cumulative ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 20 | 182 | 11 |
| 11-01 | 21 | — | 13 |
| 11-02 | **3** | 146 | 13 |
| 11-03 | **3** | 128 | 13 |
| 11-05 | 8 | 209 | 13 |
| 11-06 | 13 | — | 14 |

(App Store France, Shopping category. It has never reached the overall chart.)

Two things stand out.

First, **this chart is low** . 11-06 The #10 spot on the French Shopping Top Paid chart is a parcel-tracking app with only 28 ratings, and #12 has just 14. In this category, a few dozen annual subscriptions is enough for the top ten.

Second, **the two days it climbed to #3 were the days a batch of trials converted to paid** . 10-26 was a Sunday, a brocante day, and 10-25 a review said "first time trying it at a brocante this Sunday." The people who installed around then started 7-day trials, which auto-converted to €59.99 annual around 11-02, and the chart position rose with them (inference). No new batch has come in since, and the ranking has drifted down.

From this, its paying base is likely in the few dozens and revenue under a few thousand euros (estimate; Apple doesn't publish figures). The ranking shows some people pay, not that there is much money.

### Where users come from

Almost entirely from the developer's own network in the resale scene.

- **Being the creator** . The developer's Instagram and TikTok account is @lucasresell.38, bio "someone who hunts bargains at vide-greniers." 11-04 He posted a BrocScan Reel captioned "Un complément de revenu à côté du boulot ? Passe à l'action dès maintenant" (side income next to your job? Get started now), then @-tagged five or six French resale creators. His TikTok has only 150 followers, and single videos reach 92 to 437 views.

- **Getting small insider creators to feature it** . TikTok's @samy_ximillion normally gets 17k to 58k views per video. 10-22, the day after launch, he posted a photo set saying roughly "BrocScan helped me price and write descriptions, go download it", and it got only 1,732 views. Having that the day after launch suggests it was arranged in advance. On Instagram, the resale creator @nathandgt.resell, with 16.6k followers, posted "J'ai fait une bonne affaire ?" (Was that a good deal?). A commenter asked "what app is this", and the developer replied "BrocScan la base 🙌".

- **Organic TikTok reach** . 10-24 One review says "je l'ai découvert sur TikTok" (I found it on TikTok). But searching "brocscan" on TikTok turns up nothing, and no video has taken off yet.

- **Store search** . The name and subtitle directly include "prix de revente" (resale price) and "brocante, vide-grenier, chiner" (flea market, clearance sale, treasure hunting), clearly targeting French keywords. Search ranking is unverified. The brocscan.fr site has 8 guides, all published 10-17 at once, and they don't yet drive traffic.

No evidence of paid ads was found (unverified). Nobody on X has mentioned it in the last 30 days, and it hasn't appeared in media. Very few people know it exists yet.

### Who it's competing with

Others got here first. It's the latest and smallest of the group.

| Product | Scale (App Store, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ThriftAI: Profit Identifier | US 20,802 ratings, #8 on US Shopping Top Paid; France 91 ratings, #19 | A "photo to estimate profit" tool in English, launched 2025 June; in France it's just a translation |
| Vendly : Revente seconde main | France 199 ratings, +69 over the last 7 days, #6 Top Paid | Also built by a French indie developer, launched July, focused on the selling end; about an order of magnitude bigger |
| DealUp AI: Achats d'occasion | France 91 ratings, #18 Top Paid | Positioned as a "buying second-hand" assistant, the most similar to it |
| FripeScan | Claims 800+ active users | Clothing only, €4.99/month |
| FlipScan, FlohmarktDealer and others | Each has a dozen to a couple dozen ratings | Small look-alikes in German and English markets |
| Google Lens, eBay photo search | Free, huge user bases | Can find the same item, but doesn't tell you the most to pay, doesn't score, doesn't write copy |

What sets it apart from the others is two things. One, it delivers a **buying decision** (the most to pay, a score), not just a valuation. Two, **the whole flow is localized to France** : it uses eBay France prices, writes copy in the style of Vinted and Leboncoin, and includes a market calendar. Creators recommending it summed it up in a line: "Snap it and know if it's worth it." But these features can be copied in two weeks, as Vendly and DealUp have already shown.

There's a seasonal issue too. The brocante peak is spring and summer, and from late October things move indoors. 10-25 a resale creator said "indoor brocante season starts". The coming winter is a slow season, which is bad for retention and renewals (inference).

### If it were you

**C** : worth learning from, not worth copying as-is. The product is well-scoped and the playbook is clear, but its own base is only a few dozen sales. What pushed it to #3 was mainly a low-bar chart and the developer's own circle, which followers can't reproduce.

**Who it suits** : you're already in a second-hand resale scene in some country, you know peers and small creators, you can assemble an app with a vision model and a price-lookup API, and you want to test whether a subscription works in a small country and niche at low cost.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people with no insider network who plan to rely on paid ads or the English market. The English market already has ThriftAI at roughly 20,000 ratings, and France already has two local players bigger than it.

**How to do it** : don't build another French version. Pick a market with strong flea market culture, mature local second-hand platforms and no localized product yet, such as Italy (mercatino, Subito), Spain (rastro, Wallapop), the Netherlands (rommelmarkt, Marktplaats) or Japan (フリマ, メルカリ). Germany and the UK have small look-alikes, but none are large. Copy its full flow: photo, most-to-pay, score, counterfeit checklist, copy for local platforms, bookkeeping, market calendar. Price from local second-hand platforms' sold prices rather than eBay listings. That's more accurate, and it's where you can beat it.

**How to get users** : first recruit 20 to 30 people from your circle into a beta, and in the first week have them actually use it on market days and leave reviews. Run a resale account of your own and film short videos like "bought this for 3 euros, selling it for 40". Then find resale creators with 10k to 30k followers who already compare prices daily, and let the app appear naturally on screen. On the charts, pick a category with a low Top Paid bar like Shopping, and use a 7-day trial that converts to annual. A small number of payers can get you on the chart, and the placement itself brings some organic traffic.

**Launch window** : The European flea market season starts in 3, April. Aim to go live before March of 2027 to catch the first peak; launch in winter and you'll likely hit the slow season.

**Where we'd be wrong:** (1) By 2027 February, if BrocScan's score keeps climbing through the winter lull (say, it reaches 100), or it survives the off-season and is back in the top five come spring, the demand is more durable than we figured, and it's worth upgrading to B; (2) if it ships an Android version or starts going after markets beyond Belgium and Switzerland, that means developers are seeing paid signals we can't; (3) the other way, if ThriftAI or Vendly localizes first in the market you'd enter, that path is closed.

### One line

A French solo-built iPhone app: take a photo at a brocante / vide-grenier (flea market, clear-out sale), and it pulls current used listing prices from the official eBay API, tells you "what it resells for, the most you should pay to buy it, and whether the deal is worth it (10-point scale)," then generates Vinted / Leboncoin / eBay resale copy in one tap and logs your earnings. Subscription €59.99/year (7-day trial) or €9.99/month, 100 scans per month. French only, iPhone only; Android is "later."

### Verdict

It "took off" mainly because two things stacked: **(1) The French Shopping Top Grossing category is very low-bar** . On the day, the #10 app had only 28 ratings, so a few dozen annual subscriptions could get into the top ten. **(2) The developer is a member of the French brocante resale scene himself** . Before launch he recruited a batch of test users, and on launch day a batch of five-star reviews came in. He then ran a resale account and got 1.5–30k-follower French resale creators to feature it in videos, pushing the slogan "extra income after your day job." The product itself is well targeted (local to France, used at the stall, "the most you should pay"), but it is still small: 16 days after launch it had only 14 ratings, its best result was #3 in France Shopping Top Grossing (11-02, 11-03), and 11-06 it had already dropped to #13. It isn't really "taking off" yet; it has just popped up on a low-bar chart.

- Appeared in the Canada (French) 11-03 Shopping Top Grossing chart at #26 → #43 → #68 → #88, with 0 ratings, and is sliding down.

- It has never charted in the overall chart (free or grossing). The free category chart only ranges from #128 to #209, meaning **download volume is tiny, and its grossing rank comes from a small number of high-ticket annual subscriptions** .

- 11-02/03 hit #3 at the same time that 10-26 (Sunday, brocante day) installs were 7 days from their annual subscription trial converting to paid (inferred; 10-25 has a review saying "tried my first brocante this Sunday").

- **Chart threshold** : 11-06 In the France Shopping Top Grossing chart, #10 "Suivi colis: DHL, DPD, GLS, UPS" had only 28 ratings, and #12 had 14. In this chart a few dozen annual subscriptions can get you into the top ten, so rank doesn't mean "made a lot of money."

- Versions: 10-21 launched 1.0.1, and by 11-06 it had updated to 1.1.2 (about 6 versions in two weeks), iterating fast. The latest version dropped mandatory sign-up, added personalization based on user goals, and built "reviews from existing users" into the app: a typical move to lift paid conversion.

BrocScan is a French-native brand: it uses eBay France listing prices and the language is brocante / Vinted / Leboncoin. |
| Vendly : Revente seconde main(Jules Yanis Bourgeois) | iOS | 2026-07-23 | France 199 ratings, +7 in the last 69 days, #6 in Shopping Top Grossing | A French indie-built resale AI in the same space, but focused on "selling" (helping you sell faster on secondhand platforms) (not checked in detail); its scale is roughly an order of magnitude bigger than BrocScan |

| Margeo / Optisell (13 ratings) | Web / iOS | 2026 | Very small | Tracks resale and calculates profit, no photo-based pricing; BrocScan made profit tracking a side feature |
| FlipScan / FlohmarktDealer / Thrift Scan: Wert erkennen | iOS (Germany, etc.) | 2026 | Each has only a few dozen ratings at most | German- and English-market peers, all very small |
| A large crowd of "antique identification" apps like AntiqSnap and Curio | iOS | 2024–2026 | AntiqSnap 31,491 ratings, Curio 17,200 ratings | Appraises antiques and talks about historical value, not "resale profit by resale price" |
| Google Lens, eBay app photo search, Vinted search | Big-company features | Already around | Huge scale, free | All can "photograph an item to find matches and check prices," but none will tell you "the most you should pay to buy it," give a score, or write resale copy; you compare prices by hand |

There's no white space in this niche: the English market has products like ThriftAI at the twenty-thousand-rating level, and since 2026 July at least Vendly and DealUp have appeared in the French local market. BrocScan is the one that came late and is small.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Is in the resale scene himself, runs his own content account (confirmed)** : the developer's accounts on Instagram and TikTok are @lucasresell.38 (38 is the Isère département number, which matches the company's registered location, Sassenage), with the bio "Chasseur de pépites en vide-grenier" (hunting for gems at flea markets). 11-04 posted BrocScan's promo Reel, captioned "Un complément de revenu à côté du boulot?" (extra income on the side?), and tagged @zoulgan, @lafripajim, @nathandgt.resell, @poke_plasma25 and other resale creators. His TikTok account is small: 150 followers, 2 videos, 92–437 views.

2. **Hunting French brocante resellers for mentions (1 confirmed, likely more)** :
    - TikTok @samy_ximillion (792 followers, but his regular videos get 17k–58k views) posted a photo post on 10-22: "grâce à l'app BrocScan… générer mes descriptions… téléchargez-le" (thanks to the BrocScan app for pricing and writing my descriptions… go download it). It got only 1,732 views. This was a recommendation the day after launch, most likely a paid deal.
    - Instagram @nathandgt.resell (16.6k followers on TikTok), Reel "J'ai fait une bonne affaire?": a commenter asks "C'est quoi l'application?" (what's this app?), the developer replies "BrocScan la base 🙌", and another user says "Je ne connais pas Brocscan", which suggests the app appears in the video. Exa also matched @nathandgt.resell's TikTok "J'ai gagné 309€ en 30 min" and @lafripajim (15.8k followers)'s "doudoune Nike vintage" video to BrocScan search results. Neither caption mentions it, so it's likely on screen, but I haven't verified each one.

3. **Pull in test users before launch, and a batch of long five-star reviews lands on day one (the pattern is confirmed, the cause is inferred)** : 10-21 got 4 five-star reviews on launch day alone, one reading "tried it in brocante last week" (it wasn't on sale yet, so it was likely a TestFlight tester); 10-22's review says "two months later my capital quadrupled" (the app had only been live 1 days, so the timeline doesn't add up); 10-24 got 4 more five stars that same day. All 14 ratings are 5 stars. These reviews read a lot like what friends and test users write. Our own "Stringers" write-up (stringers.io/m/003.html) also flagged the contradiction: "10-21 wasn't on sale yet, yet it talks about two months later."

4. **Organic TikTok traffic** : a review from 10-24 says "je l'ai découvert sur TikTok" (I discovered it on TikTok). But searching "brocscan" on TikTok turns up nothing, and I haven't found a viral video driving installs.

5. **SEO / website** : brocscan.fr has 6 category resale guides and 2 blog posts, all published 10-17. The site is new and unlikely to drive much traffic yet.

6. **Paid ads** : the Meta and TikTok ad libraries only track listed products, so I couldn't check this. I also found no evidence of paid promotion online (unverified).

7. **Store search** : the app name and subtitle directly use "prix de revente" (resale price) and "Brocante, vide-grenier, chiner" (flea market, garage sale, treasure hunting). This is clearly French-keyword ASO. I couldn't get the actual Apple search rankings (the iTunes search API is rate-limited), so this is unverified.

Where the money comes from: a 7-day free trial that converts to an annual subscription at €59.99. The pitch is "pay for the year in one Sunday", which reviews and influencers both repeat.

### Why now

- Side-hustling on Vinted is huge in France. "brocante finds → Vinted resale" ("retour de brocante" unboxings) is an established content format on TikTok: @lafripajim's single videos get 50k–200k views, and @samy_ximillion's get 17k–58k. These creators already compare prices on camera every day, and BrocScan fits naturally into that content.

- Seasonality: brocante season peaks in spring and summer. Around late October, @poke_plasma25 10-25 said "début du retour des brocantes en salles" (brocantes are starting to move indoors). **Winter is the low season ahead, which will hurt retention and renewals** (inferred).

- Building a "photo → identify → price lookup" tool now costs very little, using a vision model plus the eBay Browse API. One person can ship 6 versions in two weeks.

### Differentiation

- **A very narrow use case** : "photograph it at the stall without asking the vendor for a price", "the most you should pay", "how much profit and how much you'll make", "what to check at the stall to avoid fakes". Competitors mostly do "appraisal / identification". BrocScan sells a buy-or-pass decision.

- **French localization** : prices come from French eBay sellers, copy is written in the style of Vinted and Leboncoin, coverage spans France, Belgium and Luxembourg, there's a market calendar, and the "Broc" brand is instantly clear. ThriftAI-style English products just got translated for France.

- **Trust positioning** : every valuation shows how many listings it was compared against and how confident it is, and it refuses to give a price when unsure. No ads, and data is stored in the EU.

- **Is this why it ranked so high?** Partly. The positioning is clear, so influencers can explain it in one line ("snap it and know if it's worth buying"), which makes the paid placements convert. But what actually pushed it up the chart was a low-threshold category plus founder network resources. The differentiation is easy to copy: Vendly and DealUp are French indie products from the same year, and they're bigger.

### Visibility

Few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, X search returns nothing (x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days), and TikTok has only scattered mentions. The only places that track it are a few app data aggregators (appinsider, apptail, applion, chartoo) and our own stringers.io/m/003.html.

### Copycats

I haven't found anyone directly copying BrocScan. "Scanner Brocante: Valeur Pro", which shares the name, came out earlier (2026-05), so it's not a copycat.

### What to borrow

- Pick a local, offline niche with a clear scenario (French brocante). Own the full chain in the local language and on local platforms (Vinted / Leboncoin): photo → buy decision → resale listing → bookkeeping.

- The founder acts as a user and creator in this niche, then recruits creators with 1–30k followers in the scene to show it naturally in their videos, with the line "side income that pays for itself in a day".

- Pick a category with a very low bar to reach the top charts (French Shopping). A 7-day trial converting to a high-priced annual plan lets a small number of users push the ranking, and also tests willingness to pay.

- The playbook can be copied to French-speaking Belgium and Switzerland, Germany's Flohmarkt, Spain's rastro, or UK car boot sales. But ThriftAI and local small products (FlipScan, FlohmarktDealer, etc.) already operate in these markets.

### Still unclear

- The actual number of paying users and revenue (Apple doesn't disclose it; my guess is a few dozen annual subscriptions, pure speculation).

- Whether the influencer collaborations were paid and how many there were in total; whether @lafripajim and @nathandgt's videos actually show BrocScan on screen (I didn't check frame by frame).

- Whether it's running Meta / TikTok ads.

- Whether the early five-star reviews came from friends or incentivized users (suspicious, but I can't prove it).

- Whether the ranking holds through the winter low season and after the first annual subscriptions churn; when the Android version ships.
