It promoted itself in buy-gold Facebook groups in the voice of an ordinary user, and its name caught the audience that the Zalo mini-app "Tích Chỉ" missed in the store search.

Vietnamese people call saving a little gold each month "tích chỉ". An indie developer named Dat Ngo built an app called "Tích Chỉ Vàng" that lists the buy and sell prices from about 50 gold shops for the day, and it also tracks your ledger and profit/loss. The Android version launched in March, and the iOS version followed in October 13. Three weeks later it reached #34 on the Vietnam App Store finance Top Grossing chart. That ranking isn't especially impressive. What's worth studying is how it got its users: it answered questions in Facebook groups where people buy gold, and it used a name that people couldn't find in the store. Below: what it is, how the ranking happened, where the users came from, and whether you can take the same path.

### A post that searched "7749 times"

In 2026 Mar 4, someone in a Hanoi Facebook group for gold buyers complained that they'd searched the store "7749 times" (Vietnamese for "countless times") and couldn't find the Tích Chỉ app. They only found one called Sổ Vàng Tích Sản, paid 199k₫ for the premium version, and later learned the real Tích Chỉ is a free Zalo mini-app. The post got 23 likes and 19 comments.

An anonymous reply in the comments said: "Mình đang xài app Tích chỉ vàng FREE trên CH Plays, có cả GIÁ VÀNG & GIÁ BẠC…" (I'm using the free Tích chỉ vàng app on CH Play, the Vietnamese name for Google Play, it has both gold and silver prices…).

That's the app's playbook: people look for "Tích Chỉ", the original isn't findable in the store, so it names itself after that term and then shows up under the posts to tell them.

### What it is

A gold price board plus a small ledger for Vietnamese people buying physical gold:

- We cover big brands like SJC, DOJI, and PNJ, and also local private gold shops in Da Nang like Ngọc Thịnh and KKVH, with their buy and sell prices. The store page says "over 50 gold shops", and elsewhere it says "40+";

- It has silver prices, a desktop widget, and push alerts when prices move.

- Log each gold purchase in taels and it works out whether you're up or down right now.

Free, with ads. Pro in-app purchases: 19.000₫/month, 99.000₫/year, 199.000₫ lifetime, which is about 0.7, 3.8, and 7.6 USD (Vietnam App Store page). The developer account has only this one App, and the website is hosted on GitHub Pages.

It isn't a new App from the last three weeks. The Android version (Google Play, 11-06) already has over 5 thousand downloads, 526 ratings, and a 4.8-star average. The earliest review I could find is from Mar 2026 14, when it was already on version 1.6.2. The website itself says "9.000+ downloads". The iOS version had only 6 ratings by Nov 13, all 5 stars.

### Why now

**Gold is expensive.** Domestic gold prices in Vietnam sit around 14.5M₫ per chỉ (screenshot from the official site 10-11: SJC bars bought at 14.180M₫ and sold at 14.480M₫), and silver is rising too. "1 tháng tích 1 chỉ" (save one chỉ a month) is a mainstream topic on TikTok, with related videos often hitting hundreds of thousands of views.

**Gold shops' prices differ.** Vietnam has no single gold price. Big brands publish theirs on their websites, but the prices at private street-level shops can only be found by asking in groups. In a Da Nang gold-buying group, a post from Apr 7 recommended it, saying roughly: "Everyone download this App, pick Da Nang, pick Ngọc Thịnh and KKVH... saves you from people asking gold prices in the group every day." Negative reviews of similar Apps also focus on this point: under Sổ Vàng Tích Sản, both August and October reviews complain "too few gold shops, only 9999". Covering local shops is its selling point.

### How it reached #34 on the Top Grossing chart

Its ranking on the Vietnam Finance Top Grossing chart over 10 days (from 10-28 to 11-06) is:

It jumps up, falls every day, then jumps up again. That's what it looks like when someone buys one unit and then nobody buys for a while. In 10 days it jumped 3 times, which roughly means 3 batches, maybe only 3 paid purchases, most likely 99k yearly or 199k lifetime (inferred). Similar Apps show the same curve: another App with the same name, Tích Chỉ, fell steadily from 38 to 196, and Giá Vàng VN jumped from 147 back to 36. On the Vietnam Finance Top Grossing chart, ranks 25 to 100 only need a few small in-app purchases a day.

So don't treat "hit the Top Grossing chart" as proof of money made. iOS revenue is currently very small, and Android revenue isn't public.

### Where users come from

**Facebook buying groups are the main channel.** Vietnam has many city-based gold-buying groups, and every day someone asks "what is shop X's price today". The App recommends itself in these groups in the voice of an ordinary user. On Mar 28, in the "DIỄN ĐÀN GIÁ VÀNG" group, an anonymous-style account posted: "Browsing a few gold groups I stumbled on an App... it shows gold and silver prices for free, search Tích chỉ vàng on CH Play", and the same sentence appeared on another personal profile. The wording is identical word for word, so it's most likely one person posting (inferred). There's also the Da Nang group post, and comments under other people's posts replying "tải app tích chỉ vàng".

**The name catches other people's searches.** The word "Tích Chỉ" is searchable in the stores because the Zalo mini-program Tích Chỉ (tichchi.vn) got popular first. Zalo mini-programs aren't in the stores, so users searching the App Store and Google Play can't find it, which is what the Hanoi post was about. Dat Ngo named the App "Tích Chỉ Vàng" and its iOS subtitle is "Giá vàng bạc VN" (Vietnam gold and silver prices), taking both search terms users would type.

**Its own Facebook page** , with about 450 followers, for feature updates.

**Reviews are very aggressively positive (inference).** On Android, there are 526 ratings for 5 thousand+ installs, a ratio of roughly 10%. Typical utility apps sit at 1% to 2%. Some early 5-star accounts include names like “Dat Nho” and “Ngô Đức” that look like they belong to the developer. The iOS reviews also read like they come from people the developer knows: “I used to track things by hand and it took forever. After I found this app, checking prices is easy, and there are lots of free features.”

I found no evidence of it running ads, and no TikTok account for it. No media or X posts mention it either.

Plenty. On the Vietnam App Store, at least 3 Apps named just "Tích Chỉ", and more than 2026 similar ones added in the past 5 years:

There's also a pile of Zalo "Sổ vàng" mini-programs and web pages that are free and need no install. In this group of products it's mid-to-low in scale, and smaller still on iOS. Covering local gold shops is its strength, but this kind of feature is easy to copy, and later Apps with the same name are already copying it.

### If it were you

**C** The Vietnam gold-price App market is already crowded, leaving little money for latecomers, so it's not worth copying one. What's worth learning is its way of acquiring users.

**Who it suits** : indie developers who understand a particular non-English market and can scrape data, looking for a local price question that "people ask in groups every day" (local gold prices, fuel prices, vegetable prices, exchange rates, lottery results, used car prices), and building a dashboard plus widget plus alerts.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to build another gold-price App in Vietnam; anyone who expects iOS in-app purchases to earn real income. Staying in the top 30 of the Vietnam Finance Top Grossing chart takes only a few orders of a few dollars, so rank doesn't show revenue.

**How to do it** : first find the question. Count how many posts ask it every day in local Facebook groups, Zalo groups, and Telegram groups. Then scrape all the data sources, especially the ones beyond the big brands, since that's what you'll have that existing Apps don't. Start with Android (Android dominates in markets like Vietnam), and add iOS once it's validated. Ads plus a cheap one-time purchase (around 7 USD lifetime) fit a market with modest willingness to pay.

**How to get users** : go back to those groups, answer posts where people ask about prices, and mention the App along the way. Name it with a word users are already searching for that the original can't be found under in the stores (the original worked best on Zalo, mini-programs, or the web).

**When is "before"** : for Vietnamese gold prices, it's already late. For a different country or a different price, check when that topic peaks. When gold and silver prices are high, people saving gold in other Southeast Asian markets (Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand) ask the same questions (inferred; I haven't checked local competition).

**Signs you're wrong** : ① Six months from now, if Tích Chỉ Vàng's Android downloads pass 50k, or it holds steady in the top 20 of the Vietnam Finance Top Grossing chart instead of falling in a sawtooth, the ceiling for Vietnamese gold-price Apps is higher than it looks, and you should raise your estimate for this tier. ② If the group recommendation posts get mass-deleted by the platform or group admins, and both iOS and Android growth stops, the acquisition method is more fragile than it seems.
