Selling foldable-hinge toys for $2.99: Satisfy hit the Top Paid chart in 13 stores within two days, but it's betting on a window that's already closing
What it is 11 small stress-relief toys built for the iPhone Duo foldable (bubble wrap, slime, peel-off film, snapping glow sticks, etc.). Opening and closing the phone makes sounds and vibrations. A one-time purchase of $2.99.
Why it took off New-device owners are looking for apps that show off the hinge, and they're willing to pay. It picked the most filmable ASMR themes, and a Barcelona Apple creator gave it a push. Small-store paid charts have a low bar, so it hit the entertainment paid chart in 13 stores in a single day.
CHow you could follow Don't copy this one. Copy the playbook: target the launch window of the next new hardware or new API, ship 2–3 "only this device can do it" small apps within two weeks, use generic search terms in the names, make sure they still work on regular phones, and get hardware creators to film "must-have" videos.

Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Oct 23, and a Czech indie dev put out a "open and close your phone to play" stress toy on Nov 4. Two days later it charted in the Entertainment Top Paid chart in 13 countries, hitting #3 in the US store. Not bad at all, and the playbook is worth noting, but this window came from the new-device launch, and hundreds of apps have piled in since. Below: how it did it, why it got up there, and whether you can still get in on it.
Nov 5: a TikTok from Barcelona
Nov 5: Nikias Molina, an Apple creator based in Barcelona (390k on Instagram, 430k on YouTube, 160k on TikTok), posted a TikTok titled "iPhone Duo Must Have App 🍏📱‼️ Satisfy ✨", with 17k views by 11-06 in the evening. The same day he posted "Here's the ASMR iPhone Duo content you deserve", which got 6 thousand views. He also posted a Reel on Instagram ending with "Link in bio to download". The posts were not tagged #ad.
This wasn't his biggest post: his iPhone Duo hands-on video from Sep 9 got 1.65M views. But for a $2.99 small app, it was enough. The next day, Satisfy ranked #1 on the entertainment paid chart in Jordan and Croatia, and #2 in Spain (Apple charts, 11-06). Spain was its highest-ranking large market, which fits the creator being in Barcelona.
What it is
A box of 11 small toys that use the phone's hinge as the controller:
- Open the phone, peel off the new phone's screen protector;
- Snap a glow stick along its crease so the glow runs out;
- Use the phone as bellows: each close fans the flame;
- Tilt the hinge to pour milk into iced coffee, and closing the phone "drinks" it;
- Plus bubble wrap, slime, fireworks, bubble blowing, and light-speed jumps.
The store page says "each toy uses a different part of the hinge: how far it opens, how fast it moves, the snap when it closes flat." The sound and vibration are timed to the hardware's click when it shuts. The iPhone and iPad without a foldable screen can also play it with a finger. $2.99 one-time purchase, no in-app purchases, ads, subscriptions, or accounts, no data collection, and the package is just 4 MB (App Store product page, 11-06).
At midnight on 11-06 it shipped version 1.1: added iPad support and fixed the bug where there was no sound after a phone call or alarm. A second version less than two days after launch.
Why this one, and why now
New-device owners want something to show off the hinge, and they're willing to pay. In the week the iPhone Duo went on sale, Apple featured the "Great Apps and Games on iPhone Duo" editorial collection and the "Made for iPhone Duo" badge. Wired (10-24), Stuff (10-23), MacRumors and MacStories all wrote up lists of Duo fun apps, and TheMacPost's headline simply read "the silly app era is back". A TikTok Duo video with 156k views (@anjmejia_, 11-03) mentioned in passing that "most of these apps are one-time purchases". People who just spent big on a new phone barely hesitate over a $2.99 toy.
It picked the most filmable themes. Bubble wrap, slime, and peel-off film are ASMR staples on TikTok that anyone can understand, and the hinge feel is something only this device can do. Creators can film a "must-have app" video with the footage already in hand.
Apple didn't push it. It isn't in Apple's Duo collection, and it's not on the Wired, Stuff, or MacStories lists. It rode the category's buzz, plus one creator's recommendation.
The paid chart bar is low, which magnifies "charted". On the evening of 11-06, it was #3 on the US entertainment paid chart, but only #89 on the overall US paid chart. On the Spain overall paid chart it was #24 in the day and #60 in the evening, sandwiched between long-running paid games like Minecraft and Balatro. Its review count is 0 in every store. In small stores, a few dozen daily downloads can get you near the top of the overall paid chart (inferred). Actual sales are hard to estimate from outside, but likely in the hundreds to low thousands (estimate).
The person behind it: a veteran betting on three cards
The developer, Pietro Messineo, of Italian origin and based in the Czech Republic, started building iOS apps 2012 years ago. He's now an engineering manager at ExpressVPN, runs the 6AM Swift community, and has spoken at Swift Heroes and NYSwifty. In 2019–20 he built an AI food-logging app that he sold 3 months later, and he wrote about the process on Medium. His apps have over 60 million downloads in total.
Satisfy is the third app he made for the iPhone Duo:
| App | Launched | Model | Now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unfold Your City | 10-15 | Free, $0.99 per city or $4.99 for everything | Ranked #75–200 on the book bestseller charts across a dozen-plus stores, 6 ratings |
| Vale & Daughter: Safecracker | 10-15 | Free, in-app purchases up to $4.99 | Not charted |
| Satisfy | 11-04 | $2.99 one-time purchase | Entertainment paid chart in 13 stores, #3 in the US |
Source: App Store product pages and charts, 11-06.
The first two launched a week before the release to ride the launch window. The third switched to a one-time purchase and to ASMR, which everyone understands, and its name used the search terms people actually type, "ASMR Fidget Toys", not "Duo". Of the three, the last one moved the fastest.
Who it's competing with
A large batch of "hinge toy" apps launched at the same time, mostly from mid-to-late October into early November:
| App | Launched | Pricing | Position (US entertainment paid, 11-06) | How it differs from Satisfy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny Computers(Fountain Interactive) | – | Paid | #1, overall paid chart #8 | Featured in Apple's editorial collection |
| Fold & Squish: Butterfly Paint (same developer) | 10-22 | $1.99 | #21 | One idea only: paint one half, fold, get a symmetrical ink blot; covered by MacStories |
| Ta-Duo: Surprise Gift Box | 10-31 | Paid | #27 | Single mechanic, opening gift boxes |
| PocketMicrowave | 10-21 | $0.99 | Category chart in 4 stores | Silly simulator, recommended by MacStories |
| Foldies: Squishy Fidget Toys | 10-23 | Free | Not charted, 1 ratings | Nearly identical theme (12 fold-and-open toys), and being free didn't get it a spot |
Beyond that is a long tail: Metal Toy, Smash It! Duo, WaffleMaker, Gami, Foldfish, Toastie toaster… Several hundred apps on the App Store now mention the iPhone Duo in their descriptions.
On the other end are the veteran touch stress-relief apps: Pop Us! (140k ratings), Mini Antistress (120k), Antistress - Relaxing games (98k). All are free with ads and have nothing to do with hinges, but they're far larger in scale.
The Foldies row is the most telling: the same idea, the same timing, free, and with no one pushing it, so it got no spot. In this category, the difference isn't the idea. It's how well you pick the theme, how polished the build is, and whether someone helps you make a video.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't chase this app itself. What you can learn is a playbook for new-hardware launches, not a market that's still empty. The iPhone Duo window opened two weeks ago, several hundred apps have already crowded in, and the top spots are held by a few apps in Apple's editorial collections. Satisfy itself has only one day of chart data and 0 ratings. Once the buzz fades, the long tail of toy apps like this will probably be short (inferred).
Who it's for: Fast iOS indie devs who can ship two or three polished small apps in the first two weeks after a new device or API drops, and who have connections with Apple creators or the developer crowd.
Who it's not for: Anyone chasing long-term income. This is a wave-by-wave business: one-time purchases, no repeat buys, and timing is everything.
How to do it:
- Chase the next window, don't crowd this one. When the next new-form-factor hardware, sensor, or API ships, release 2–3 small "only this device can do it" toys in the one or two weeks around launch, spreading your bets. Ship the early ones free with in-app purchases, and switch the later ones to one-time purchase.
- Name it with the words everyone searches, and have a fallback. Use "ASMR" or "Fidget Toys" instead of the hardware name, and make it playable on regular phones and iPads too, so you're not capped by the new device's install base.
- Pick a subject creators can film. Stress relief, ASMR, "show off the new phone": something a creator can shoot in ten seconds.
- If you want to act on this now, the one to test is porting the same idea to Android foldables (Samsung Galaxy Z Fold/Flip and Pixel Fold can all read hinge state). There are fewer polished hinge toys over there (inferred, not verified). The cost: Android users are less willing to pay, so you may have to go free with in-app purchases.
How to get users: Get mid-tier creators who cover this hardware to post "must-have apps," like this Nikias Molina post; repost a screenshot of the #1 spot on the local Top Paid chart; cross-promote within developer circles.
When the window is: two to three weeks after the new hardware ships, before the lists are written and the charts are full. For iPhone Duo, that window has mostly passed.
What would tell you you read it wrong: If Satisfy is still near the top of Top Paid in several stores by December and its ratings climb into the hundreds, hinge toys aren't a passing fad but a small category that can sell for a long time. Then it's worth taking another look at what it doesn't do well yet, such as more toys, seasonal themes, or a kids' version.

Satisfy: ASMR Fidget Toys (iOS id6821710782) research report
Research date 2026-11-06. Stores checked: the appstore library scan covers all 115 stores (only 13 are charted), with focus on us, es, jo, and hr. There's only 11-06 day of chart data, and the app has been up just two days, so every conclusion here is an early read.
One line
A "hinge fidget toy box" built for Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo: 11 small toys (bubble wrap, slime, peeling protective film, glow sticks, bellows fire-starting, pouring iced coffee, and more), with sound and haptics for the open angle, the speed, and the moment it snaps flat with a "pop." Non-foldable iPhones and iPads can play it via touch. $2.99 one-time purchase, no in-app purchases, no ads, 4 MB.
Verdict
It charted mainly because three things stacked up: a platform event + a low bar for Top Paid + an Apple creator pushing it, and the product itself is well polished. iPhone Duo 10-23 launched, and early buyers were hunting for apps that show off the hinge and willing to pay for them (a TikTok user specifically said "most of these apps are one-time purchases"). Satisfy 11-04 launched, and 11-05 European Apple creator Nikias Molina (Barcelona; IG 390k / YouTube 430k / TikTok 160k followers) posted 2 times across TikTok and Instagram, titled "iPhone Duo must-have apps: Satisfy," with a "link in bio." 11-06 it charted in Entertainment Paid across 13 stores. But the rankings look higher than they are: 16 in Jordan's overall Top Paid and 24 in Spain are small-store charts where a few dozen sales a day is enough; it's only #43 in US Entertainment Paid. The rating count is 0. Calling it a breakout is too early; it looks more like a veteran indie dev catching a hardware wave with their third card.

- Every store shows 0 ratings, with no reviews (Apple lookup, 11-06).
- 11-06 shipped 1.1 versions, added iPad support, and fixed a bug where sound cut out after a call or alarm (Apple lookup releaseNotes). It shipped a second version less than two days after launch, so the dev moves fast.
- The data card says "#3 in US Entertainment Paid," but I couldn't verify this: the library shows 11-06 at #43, and the current store page shows no rank badge.
- Spain's overall Top Paid #24 sits among long-running paid staples like Minecraft and Balatro (appstore library v_chart). Small-store overall Top Paid has a low bar; this only shows dozens of sales a day, not scale.
Developer
Pietro Messineo (Czech, of Italian descent), has been doing iOS since 2012. Currently Engineering Manager at ExpressVPN, and founder of 6AM Swift. In 2019–20 he built an AI meal-logging app and sold it 3 months later (he wrote about it on Medium). His apps have 600k+ downloads in total. He has spoken at Swift Heroes, NYSwifty, and the iOS Dev Podcast (pietromessineo.com, swiftheroes.com, Medium). On the iPhone Duo line, he is rolling out a set of products, and Satisfy is not a standalone one:
- Unfold Your City (10-15 launch, free): open the phone and the city stands up like a pop-up book. $0.99 per city, $4.99 for all. Ranks 75–200 on the Books Top chart in more than a dozen stores including Austria, Israel, India, France, and Taiwan, with 6 ratings (appstore library, store page).
- Vale & Daughter: Safecracker (10-15 launch, free): "crack the safe by feel," in-app purchases $4.99, not charted yet.
- Satisfy (11-04 launch, $2.99 one-time purchase): the fastest of the three to chart.
Two of them launched a week before the Duo release to catch the launch window; the third switched to a paid one-time purchase with a broad-audience ASMR stress-relief theme. This is a deliberate portfolio bet.
Competitors
Other native Duo apps built around the "hinge toy" idea at the same time (all launched mid-to-late October through early November):
- Fold & Squish: Butterfly Paint (Fountain Interactive, 10-22, $1.99): #20 in US Entertainment Paid, covered by MacStories (11-04) and TheMacPost (10-25). The same company's Tiny Computers is an app in Apple's editorial collection and ranks #1 in US Entertainment Paid. Fold & Squish does one thing (paint one half, fold, get a symmetric ink blot); Satisfy is a box of 11 toys.
- Foldies: Squishy Fidget Toys (Shesek LLC, 10-23, free): 12 open-and-close small toys, almost the same theme, 1 ratings, not charted. Going free didn't earn a chart position.
- Ta-Duo: Surprise Gift Box (10-31): #26 in US Entertainment Paid.
- PocketMicrowave (Cragworks, 10-21, $0.99): recommended by MacStories, charted in category charts across 4 stores.
- A long tail: Metal Toy, Smash It! Duo, WaffleMaker: Fold & Bake, Chirpfold, Gami: Hinge Origami, Nomling, Foldfish, DuoBox accordion, Toastie toaster, and more (appstore library; several hundred apps mention iPhone Duo in their descriptions).
Traditional touch-screen stress-relief apps (established, much larger scale, but unrelated to the hinge):
- Mini Antistress Relaxing Games (2024, free, 120k ratings), Antistress - Relaxing games (202M), Pop Us! (SayGames, 2.02B), Fidget Toys 3D (202M), all hypercasual free-with-ads models (iTunes search).
Big-company features: Apple didn't build this kind of toy itself. It only provided the hinge-angle API and the "Made for iPhone Duo" badge (Apple newsroom 2026-10, MacRumors 10-22).
Growth channels
- Platform event (confirmed): iPhone Duo launched 10-23. That week Apple added the "Great Apps and Games on iPhone Duo" editorial collection and the "Made for iPhone Duo" badge. Wired (10-24), Stuff (10-23), MacRumors, and TheMacPost ("the silly app era is back") published roundups in batches. New-device buyers were actively searching for hinge apps. But Satisfy is absent from Apple's collection and from these media roundups (checked the collection page, Wired, Stuff, and MacStories 11-04). It rode the category's heat, not a direct Apple recommendation.
- Creator content (confirmed): Nikias Molina 11-05 posted two TikToks ("iPhone Duo Must Have App 🍏📱‼️ Satisfy ✨", 17K views; "Here's the ASMR iPhone Duo content you deserve", 6K views) and one Instagram Reel ("iPhone Duo ASMR with Satisfy App… Link in bio to download"). He's based in Barcelona, which matches Spain being one of the top-ranked markets. Whether he was paid is unknown: the posts don't carry #ad. He also ships his own apps, so he may be part of the indie dev circle that cross-promotes with Pietro.
- Store search / ASO (inferred): the name packs in two high-search-volume terms, "ASMR" and "Fidget Toys", and the subtitle reads "Pop bubble wrap, squish slime…". The iPad version 11-06 followed, picking up more search traffic.
- Developer's existing personal reach (inferred): X @pietro_messineo, a podcast, and conference speaking give it some early traffic in dev circles. No related tweets turned up in the local x-radar database; unverified.
- Not found: paid ads, free-promo chart pushes, fake reviews (0 rating), sock-puppet accounts.
Why people would pay
- Duo owners just spent thousands of dollars on new hardware, so the need to "have something to show off the hinge" is strongest; TikTok @anjmejia_ (11-3.16M views) says outright, "most of these apps are one-time purchases."
- ASMR and stress relief are evergreen TikTok topics. Bubble wrap, slime, and peel-off films are instantly recognizable, and they pair naturally with "the feel of folding."
- $2.99 one-time purchase, no data collection; new-device owners barely hesitate.
Differentiation
- Compared with older stress-relief apps: it treats the hinge as the input (open/close angle, speed, the snap when it lies flat). The sound and haptics line up with the hardware's mechanical "click", a feel ordinary phones can't deliver. No ads, one-time purchase.
- Compared with other Duo toys: one box holds 11 toys (most rivals do one idea), every theme is the most viral ASMR type, and there's a touchscreen fallback, so it sells on both iPhone and iPad.
- This differentiation is why creators can film it: ASMR suits short video naturally. But the bar for differentiation is low. Similar themes already exist, like Foldies and Fold & Squish. The moat is execution speed and polish, not exclusivity.
How visible it is
Word in small circles: mainstream media hasn't covered it, Apple editors haven't featured it, and only one mid-tier Apple creator has posted about it. Revenue isn't public and there's no TrustMRR listing. But the "iPhone Duo hinge toy" category itself has already been overwritten by Wired, MacStories, and MacRumors, and there are many similar apps.
Copycats
Nothing yet copies Satisfy directly (it's only been out two days). Plenty of same-period, same-theme apps already exist: Foldies (10-23), Fold & Squish (10-22), Metal Toy (11-01), Smash It! Duo (10-31).
Takeaways
- New hardware / new API launch window: in the one or two weeks around a launch, ship 2–3 small apps that "only this machine can play," spreading bets across themes. Launch the first batch free with IAP, then move the rest to one-time purchase.
- Name it with broad search terms (ASMR / Fidget Toys), not the hardware name, and build a touchscreen fallback so the small installed base of a niche new device doesn't cap it.
- Find creators who cover that hardware and have them film "must-have apps." ASMR content comes with visuals that are easy to shoot.
- The bar for a small-market paid chart is low. A few dozen downloads can earn a "#1 in Entertainment" screenshot, which then gets reused for promotion.
Uncertain
- There's only one day of chart data and no rating growth. Actual units sold can't be estimated (a paid ranking of #1 in a small market might mean only double-digit sales).
- Whether Nikias Molina's posts were paid partnerships or friendly cross-promotion is unverified.
- The data card's "US Entertainment Top Paid #3" couldn't be verified (the database shows 43).
- It's unknown how long iPhone Duo installs and launch buzz will last. Once the hype fades, the long tail for toy apps like this could be very short.
