The week the top app went down, a hand-drawn cat caught its users: Japanese barometric app 「ゆる気圧」
What it is A Japanese barometric pressure forecast app. The home screen is a hand-drawn cat walking along a pressure curve. Say "I feel awful" and it replies with a line. Free with thin ads; subscription ¥200/month.
Why it took off When the top rival 頭痛ーる went down, the creator posted on Threads as a 16-year user, tagged the outage, and got 13k views, which brought the first users. Few ads and a healing cat kept them, and it earned a 4.7 rating.
CHow you could follow Don't build another Japanese barometric app. Take the "tool + comforting character" format into daily-use scenarios like pollen, periods, or insomnia, or into the English market. Post companion content with patient tags, and watch for the moments when the top app goes down or adds ads. Post the same day as an ex-user, with the event tag.

In Japan there's a group of people who get headaches the day before rain, and their phones all have a barometric forecast app called 「頭痛ーる」. In late October 2026, the app went down for nearly a week. A user of more than ten years had just launched their own replacement three days earlier, with a hand-drawn cat that comforts you. Below: how it got seen, why it keeps people, whether the playbook can be copied, and why we think following it directly isn't worth much.
A post tagged with the rival's outage
In late October 22, an account called @yurukiatsu posted on Threads:
I built a weather-pressure app called 【ゆる気圧】! I've been using 頭痛ーる for 16 years, but I wanted an app that shows no ads, feels soothing, and lets you say when it's rough. A cat does the soothing. It walks across the graph. It's free.
("I made a barometric app. I've used 頭痛ーる for 16 years, and I wanted an app with no ads at first, that heals you, and that lets you say 'this is awful.' A cat heals you. It walks on the graph. It's free.")
The post ended with two tags: #頭痛ーる #頭痛ーるメンテナンス (頭痛ーる under maintenance). The post got 13k views and 261 likes (Threads, 11-06 views).
That was right when Zutsuuru (頭痛ーる) went down. Its official account posted an apology on Oct 23: "Service has been unavailable for an extended period...", and temporarily pointed users to a weather-pressure forecast page elsewhere. The restoration was only announced on Oct 27. By Oct 22 people were already posting on X: "Zutsuuru under maintenance, can't use it." Zutsuuru is the category leader: 71K ratings on the Japan App Store, and it sits at #3–4 on the Free chart in Weather year-round, with about 1.2M MAU (per its partner weather account's bio).
Over a million people a day suddenly couldn't open the thing they relied on, so they went looking for replacements. Those searching the outage tag came across a post saying "I'm a 16-year user too, so I made one."
The maker is Miki Murayama, who goes by 「あおい」, an indie developer whose only App Store app this is. Her pinned Oct 20 post is more direct: she was going to build a third app for something else, but the pressure kept making her miserable, so she built this one first. "Ads keep increasing, I want to see the graph, but it's exhausting."
What it actually is
Opening it shows a pressure curve with a cat for today on it (later a Shiba named 「こむぎ」 was added). When pressure drops, the cat slides down the curve like a slide. Below it, 「いま、どう?」 asks how you're doing. Tap 「だいじょうぶ / まあまあ / つらい」 and the cat replies with a line.
The features are standard for this category, and the data comes from Apple Weather, same as everyone else's: barometric pressure from the past 12 hours to the next 48 hours, five status levels, and an alert about 3 hours before pressure drops. What it adds is a fix for a few complaints from long-time users:
- Ads are a single thin banner that "doesn't block the chart." The creator's explanation: 「Appleに場所代12800円払っているので」 ("I'm paying Apple 12,800 yen in 'rent'").
- Alerts also fire when pressure rises, with a 「びんかん」 (sensitive) mode. No pushes overnight.
- No sign-up. Your health data stays on the phone, and location isn't stored.
- The store page includes a promise: 「『頑張って』とは言いません」, meaning it won't tell you to "hang in there."
Paid is a subscription at ¥200/month or ¥1,600/year (per the store page).
Users stay because of the cat
Japan App Store: 11-06:4.69 stars from 39 ratings. Almost every review is the same word: 「癒される」 ("healing"):
When I'm not feeling well, just watching the cat and Shiba heals me. I feel the same way, it says, and the warm, gentle companionship helps. I forget the pressure part (lol) and keep looking at the cat and Shiba. (4 stars, 11-01)
I've used other apps for years, but with more ads I tried this one... I look forward to new friends joining. (5 stars, 11-03)
Falling pressure is exhausting, but watching the cat slide down like a slide is healing. (5 stars, 11-02)
The second one is exactly a 頭痛ーる defector. Another 10-25 review states the source outright: "I read the developer's posts on Threads and downloaded it."
"New friends" refers to the creator's preview of more cat breeds and companions. For a tool app, having a reason to "wait for the next character" is its second retention hook.
How big the numbers are
Small, but the fastest among the new entrants in its cohort.
| Date | Total ratings | Weather category, free chart (Japan) |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 15 | 30 |
| 11-01 | 25 | 43 |
| 11-04 | 32 | 46 |
| 11-06 | 37 | 11 |
(Japan App Store, checked once a day. There's no record before 10-28, so how high it climbed during the outage week isn't visible.)
After 10-28 it added 0–5 ratings a day, 17 in a week. For comparison, the pressure newcomers launched in the same 2026 year, 「みあケア」 (March) and 「ズツノート」 (June), had almost zero new ratings in the same period.
On 11-06 it hit #11 on the chart. Three things collided that day: version 1.4.0 added English and launched in the US, Canada, UK and Australia; Japan had a dramatic pressure swing that week (頭痛ーる's official account was also posting 「気圧急上昇」 alerts); and the creator posted a companion post about "this week's intense pressure." Which one did the work can't be separated. It's not on the Top Grossing chart, so revenue is probably small (inference).
Separately, on Oct 26 a large English account, @berrily.app, posted a roundup titled "small apps that deserve way more downloads" with 400k views, and the creator thanked them in the replies. At that time the app was only in Japanese, so how many downloads that post drove can't be verified. But it's likely why she later made an English version and opened @yurukiatsu.en separately (inference).
Who it's competing with
Barometric headache apps are a crowded category in Japan. More than 60 apps on the Japan App Store have 「気圧」 or 「頭痛」 in the name. More than 2026 of the indie products launched in the past 30 years have fewer than 10 ratings.
| Product | Launched | Japan App Store ratings (early November) | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| 頭痛ーる | 2013 | 71k | Category leader, made by a certified weather forecaster, more and more ads |
| ウェザーニュース 天気痛予報 | — | — | Free features in a major weather app |
| 気圧計 Torr / 頭痛ろぐ | 2021 / 2015 | 1,244 / 2,354 | Tool, headache diary |
| みあケア / ズツノート / ハレル | 2026-03 / 06 / 2025-12 | 58 / 53 / 60 | AI analysis, doctor-backed |
| もふもふ天気予報 | 2026-05 | 10 | Cute animals + regular weather, no barometric angle |
| くまくんの低気圧チェック / あられ天気 | 2026-07 / 08 | 0 / 0 | Character + low pressure, closest to it |
The last line matters most. The "character + low pressure" idea had at least two other apps before it, both with zero ratings. The idea isn't scarce; being seen is. ゆる気圧 won on two things: hand-drawn art and copy good enough to keep people, and saying one line at the right moment, with the right identity and the right tag, to bring people in.
How many people know about it
Almost nobody. No media coverage, no discussion on X about 「ゆる気圧」 in nearly 30 days, and the creator's Threads account has fewer than 300 followers. We found no trace of paid ads or TikTok. We also haven't seen a clear copycat yet. 「ねこもよう - 猫と天気」, launched 11-02, is a cat plus weather, not a barometric-illness app.
If it were you
One-line verdict: worth learning from, not worth copying. It took off because of the week 頭痛ーる went down, and that window has closed. The Japan barometric category has already taken in 30+ new entrants this year, and the two closest to it have zero ratings. Subscription at ¥200/month caps the scale. What you can really take away is two moves: "post on the day the top player fails, as an ex-user, with the event tag," and "give a tool you check daily, and that annoys you when you do, a layer of a character that comforts you."
Who it suits: indie developers who are long-term users of some chronic discomfort themselves, who can draw or find an illustration style that stays consistent, and who post in a real voice on places like Threads, Instagram or Xiaohongshu, where many women users are.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build another barometric app in Japan (too crowded, and you don't have that week). People who expect to make money from it (¥200/month subscription, and it hasn't even reached the Top Grossing chart). People who can code but can't draw or write gentle copy. The moat of this product is the art and the words.
How to do it: Keep the form, change the scenario. Pick something people check every day that makes them miserable: pollen (Japan's spring season), periods and PMS, insomnia, air quality. Pull from free sources (Apple Weather, public pollen and air data). The home screen shows a character, not charts. A daily check-in gets one line back, and never "you've got this." Release characters in batches. Or switch languages: 11-06 has only just entered the English-speaking market, and the existing English pressure apps are mostly pure utilities (Barometric Pressure Tracker and the like). A pressure app with a comforting cat hasn't been done well in English yet (my inference, not systematically verified).
How to get users: two things. Day to day: post companion content on a schedule tied to the forecast ("pressure's wild this week, hang in there, everyone"), using patient tags (in Japanese, tags like #気圧のせい). At key moments: list the top apps in your scenario and watch them for outages, price hikes, added ads, and bad reviews after redesigns. On the day something breaks, post as "I'm an old user too," and include their event tag. The 13k-view post for ゆる気圧 came about exactly this way.
When it needs to be ready by: the pollen direction needs to launch before the end of January 2027, since Japan's pollen season starts in February. Other directions have no hard deadline, but should be ready before the next time the top app you're watching goes down.
What would show we misread it: ① ゆる気圧's English version gets hundreds of ratings in the US store within a month or two. That would mean the language-switch path is wider than we think, and it should be upgraded. ② The reverse: its Japan rating growth falls to single digits a week or less, and it drops out of the top 50 in the weather chart. That would mean the outage wave was the whole story, and the character's word of mouth can't sustain organic growth. ③ 頭痛ーる releases an ad-free version or adds its own character companionship. That would mean the leader has filled the gap, and this path narrows.

Why ゆる気圧 (iOS id6821788758) took off
A Japanese app combining barometric pressure forecasts with hand-drawn cat and shiba companions. Indie developer Miki Murayama (public name 「あおい」, site startline-apps.pages.dev) launched it 2026-10-19, and today (2026-11-06) released the 1.4.0 English version.
Bottom line
It caught a rare platform event: Japan's top weather-sensitivity app 「頭痛ーる」 (about 1.2M monthly active users) went down for nearly a week in late 2026-10 (back around 10/22 to 10/27). ゆる気圧 10/19 had just launched, and its creator 10/22 posted on Threads, tagging #頭痛ーる and #頭痛ーるメンテナンス, catching users who were hunting for a replacement. The product itself is built on a clear pitch: longtime 頭痛ーる users were tired of the ads, so the creator made a version without the nagging that offers comfort instead. That's why people who showed up stayed, and the reviews are good. Volume is still tiny (39 ratings), and cold-start growth came entirely from the creator's own Threads posts, so almost nobody outside knows about it yet.

- Apple lookup (jp, 11-06): 4.69,39 ratings; version 1.4.0 (released 11-06, content: 「英語の国(アメリカなど)でも使えるように」).
- The store page lists in-app purchases: 「有料プラン(月額)¥200 / (年額)¥1,600」; the free version shows a thin banner ad (the author says 「Appleに場所代12800円払っているので、細い広告は入れさせてもらいました」). Not on the Top Grossing chart, so revenue is very small.
- Our data starts 10-28, so the rankings from 10-19 to 10-27, the burst period (10/22 posts, 10/26 reposts), aren't recorded. By 10-28 it had accumulated 15 ratings. 11-06 it jumped to #11, and three things happened that same day: the author posted 「今週の激しい気圧」, the English version shipped, and Japan's pressure changed sharply that week (頭痛ーる's official account posted 「気圧急上昇」 alerts 11/6–11/7). We can't tell which one drove it.
- For comparison: 頭痛ーる has held #3–4 on the same chart, adding 10–31 ratings per day. Similar newcomers みあケア (2026-03 launch) and ズツノート (2026-06) added almost no ratings over those 10 days. Among pressure-related apps launched in 2026, ゆる気圧 has the fastest rating growth.
2. Competitors
(POCKE, 2013; 71,002 ratings, weather free chart #3, ~1.2M MAU): the category leader. Made by meteorologists, with pain and medication logs. Its growing ads are the main complaint from long-time users. It went offline for nearly a week in late 2026-10.
- Weather News weather-pain forecast (a free feature inside a big-brand app), and the pressure-headache column on tenki.jp: big players already treat this as a feature.
- 気圧計 Torr (SoyApps, 2021; 1,244), 頭痛ろぐ (2015; 2,354), ミグル (2021; 694): utility-focused or headache-diary apps.
- みあケア (MIAOU, 2026-03; 58, chart #42), ズツノート (2026-06; 53), ハレル (2025-12; 60): the 2026 new wave, built around AI analysis or specialist-doctor endorsement, none of which have taken off yet.
- もふもふ天気予報 (JINGOOD, 2026-05; 10 ratings, weather free chart around 60–100, best Top Grossing #49): a precedent for 'cute animals + weather'. Its selling point is a premium tier that sets your own pet's photo as the background, but it doesn't cover pressure-related sickness.
- くまくんの低気圧チェック (2026-07) and あられ天気:猫がおしえる天気予報 (2026-08): closest in form, both 'character + low pressure/weather', yet both have 0 ratings. The idea isn't scarce; the hard part is getting seen.
- English market: utility apps like Barometric Pressure Tracker. ゆる気圧 11-06 just entered the US, Canada, UK, and Australia stores.
3. Where users come from (growth tactics)
- Founder's own account on Threads (verified): Pinned post 10/20 says "Barometric pressure was wrecking me, so I built this instead of the third app I had planned. I've used a weather app for 15 years and the ads keep getting worse." It got 65 likes. 10/22 posted the official launch with
#頭痛ーる #頭痛ーるメンテナンスtags, 13k views, 261 likes, 36 replies, 18 reposts. The account now has 294 followers. Common tags include #気圧のせい #ねこのいる暮らし #CatsOfThreads #いぬのいる暮らし, and it posts check-in lines tied to the forecast, like "Pressure's brutal this week, hang in there, everyone." - Rode the rival's shutdown (confirmed): the official Threads account for 頭痛ーる posted "Service has been unavailable for a long time… we've started publishing a temporary pressure forecast," 10/23 then "the official site is back up" 10/27. On X, 10/22 users also said "can't see it during 頭痛ーる maintenance." ゆる気圧's launch post landed right in the middle of the outage and even carried the shutdown tag.
- Picked up by a big-account roundup (confirmed, English-speaking audience only): @berrily.app posted 「small apps that deserve way more downloads」, reaching 10/26 with 403k views and 5.6K likes, and the author replied with thanks. The post spread mainly in English-language circles, and the app then had only a Japanese version, so direct downloads were limited. It likely helped prompt the 11-06 English launch and the separate @yurukiatsu.en account.
- Store cross-recommendation (confirmed): ゆる気圧 showed up in the 「その他のおすすめ」 section on the みあケア product page, so it gets seen alongside other pressure apps.
- Reviews and word of mouth: reviewers explicitly write "I downloaded it after reading the developer's posts on Threads" (10-25), "I'd used other apps for years, but the ads got too heavy" (11-03), and "the famous person's barometer app... didn't work for me" (10-24). No sign of incentivized reviews.
- No paid ads, TikTok, or press coverage found. No discussion on X either (an x-radar search of 「ゆる気圧」 in the past 30 days returned 0).
4. Why users stick around
- Emotional value: you check in with 「だいじょうぶ・まあまあ・つらい」, the cat replies with a line, and it promises 「『頑張って』とは言いません」. Nearly every review says 「癒される」, and one admits 「肝心な気圧の方はそっちのけで猫ばかり見てます」.
- Features aimed at 頭痛ーる's pain points: fewer ads; you can view 48 hours back; alerts also fire on pressure rises (reviews specifically praise this); a 「びんかん」 sensitive mode; no notifications at night.
- Collection feel that keeps growing: it added the shiba 「こむぎ」 first, and previews more cat breeds and 「新しい友だち」 to come. Reviews keep mentioning 「ともだちが増えるのが楽しみ」.
- Privacy promise: no sign-up required; body-condition logs stay on the device, and location isn't stored.
5. Differentiation
It's a pressure forecast like any other (the data comes from Apple Weather, same as everyone else), but it swaps the home screen from 'charts' to 'companion characters': animals walk along the pressure curve and slide down it, the image changes daily, check-ins get a reply, and the tone is deliberately gentle and never pushy. Other newcomers in the category compete on AI analysis, doctor endorsements, and detailed logs. The 'character companion' idea isn't new (くまくん, あられ天気, もふもふ all exist), and ゆる気圧 wins on execution: hand-drawn quality, copy tone, and fixing the 頭痛ーる long-time user complaints (ads, alerts only on drops) one by one. Differentiation is why it keeps people and earns high ratings, but it isn't why it got seen. Visibility came from the author posting tagged shutdown-era posts during 頭痛ーる's outage, speaking as a real long-time user.
6. How many people know about it
Almost nobody knows about it yet. Revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, and 0 discussion on X. On Threads there's one post with tens of thousands of views and one English roundup repost, and the account has fewer than 300 followers.
7. Copycats
No clear copycat found. ねこもよう - 猫と天気 (Shuntaro Ide, launched 11-02, 2 ratings) is 'cat + weather' and came out around the same time, but it doesn't address pressure sickness, so it's not a clone. くまくん and あられ天気 both launched earlier.
8. Takeaways
- A head product's outage is a cold-start window: watch big apps for shutdowns, price hikes, or new ads, then on the same day post on the platforms where users gather, speaking as 'I'm a long-time user too', and carry their outage tag.
- Chronic condition or everyday utility + healing character: build on free data like Apple Weather, put the effort into characters, copy, and collection mechanics (adding new characters over time), and price the subscription around ¥200/month. This transfers to pollen, period, insomnia, and PMS: any situation where you check every day and feel annoyed each time.
- Cold-start a Japanese women-focused indie product on Threads: post companion-style updates on a schedule tied to pressure forecasts, using community tags like #気圧のせい.
9. Uncertain
- Chart rankings from 10/19–10/27 weren't recorded (the database starts 10-28).
- Whether @berrily.app's roundup included it, and how many downloads it drove, is unverified. We only see the author thanking them in the replies.
- Subscription conversion and ad revenue are unknown, and it isn't on the Top Grossing chart.
- After 頭痛ーる came back, whether new users keep arriving: since 10-28, it has added 2–5 ratings per day, with steady but not accelerating growth. Whether the 11-06 spike to #11 can hold is also uncertain.
- The English version just launched, so the effect is unknown.
