Folded it's a tiny plane, open it's a whole other story: how an iPhone Duo wallpaper app squeezed into #14 on the US Top Paid chart

What it is: a paid wallpaper app for Apple's foldable iPhone Duo. Each piece is built separately for the outer and inner screens: folded you see a small scene, unfolded you get a panoramic reversal.

Why it blew up: it launched right as the iPhone Duo hit shelves, when new owners were hunting for wallpapers. It renamed itself to capture the "Duo" search term, and the developer posted demo videos on X daily and replied under big accounts like MacStories. After MacStories picked it up, its rank jumped from #44 to #14.

CHow you could follow it: don't make another Duo wallpaper app. Learn the play instead: look for a single-feature idea for the Duo's dual-screen form factor beyond wallpapers, name it with "Duo" in the title, price it as a one-time purchase, and ship before 2027-01 bulk deliveries, then get exposure from X demo videos and replies under big Apple-community accounts.

Grade C: the Duo wallpaper niche is already crowded (FoldTales came earlier with the same idea, and established free apps have far more volume). Estimated sales are in the dozens per day, and the window closes as the new hardware matures. What's worth learning is the playbook of "ship a single-feature app in a new hardware's first week + zero-cost distribution", not copying the exact product. Buzz in the circles

Four days before Apple's foldable iPhone Duo went on sale, a company known for clone mini-games launched a paid wallpaper app: each image is built separately for the outer and inner screens, so you see a small scene when folded and the full picture only when unfolded. Two weeks later it climbed to #14 on the US Photo & Video Top Paid chart, yet it had only 1 ratings worldwide. Below: what it actually sells, where the rank came from, why nobody else ran the same idea, and whether this path is still worth following.

A reply

On Nov 5, MacStories reposted on X its article from the day before, "Our Favorite iPhone Duo Apps: Weird and Wonderful, Vol. 1". Under it, an account called "Duopaper" replied: "A small one for Vol. 2: Duopaper", with a few-second video showing a small plane on the screen when the phone is closed, which falls into a larger, stranger sky when opened.

The same day, the account replied under tech YouTuber Vadim Yuryev's post praising a different Duo app: "While you're collecting Duo-native apps, add Duopaper…"

Its own profile posts follow almost the same template:

Every wallpaper I tried on the Duo treated unfold like a zoom button. So I drew Duopaper scenes for both screens. Folded: one tiny plane. Open it and the flight had other plans. (Translation: every wallpaper I tried on the Duo treated unfolding like a zoom button, so I drew a version for each screen. Folded: one small plane. Open it, and the flight had other plans.)

Another scene follows the same pattern: "Folded: quiet Halloween night. Open it: someone else showed up." The account has posted 1,531 times, was registered 2023 years ago, and its bio now reads "Wallpapers made for iPhone Duo". The pinned post is tagged "Made with AI" yet the copy says "I drew", so the art was most likely AI-generated (inference).

On the US Photo & Video Top Paid chart, it went from #44,11-06 11-05 to #14; the number of countries where it charted went from 6 to 10 (App Store charts, 11-05 → 11-06).

What it is

Duopaper: Panoramic Wallpapers, published by CyberGame Limited, which has 5 apps on the account, mainly mini-games and small utilities.

  • Launched Oct 19; on the next day, 1.0.1, it renamed the app from "Unfold Wallpapers" to "Duopaper", with subtitle Panoramic Wallpapers.
  • One-time purchase, no subscription. Category: Photo & Video.
  • Store copy: "A little scene. A much bigger surprise." Styles include Minimal, Illustration, Comics, 3D, Graphic, and Painterly. You can preview the unfolded view, overlay a clock, and choose which screen shows when folded.
  • Some storefronts' descriptions still contain "The entire experience is free, with no ads, in-app purchases", which contradicts the actual paid model. It looks like a template that wasn't fully edited (inference).

MacStories' review describes the illustrations as "often with a folded paper style", and says each unfold "adds a little whimsy".

Why now

The demand came from Apple. iPhone Duo opened pre-orders on Oct 16 and sold out within minutes, with shipping pushed to 2027 January (Forbes, 10-16). It officially went on sale Oct 23, with almost no stock in stores. Owners of new hardware's first move is to change the wallpaper: TikTok videos tagged "iPhone Duo wallpaper" include one with 10-28 at 1.87M views and another with 10-22 at 1M. Duopaper launched 10-19, right between pre-orders and the on-sale date.

The rename put the search term into the name. Nobody searches "Unfold", but everybody searches "Duo". It made the change the day after launch.

The paid category chart has a low bar. 11-06 On the US Photo & Video Top Paid chart it sits between camera apps like Chromagraph Camera, 2AM CAM, and Moment Pro, and it's the only paid wallpaper app there. Holding the top 20 on this chart probably takes only dozens of sales per day (estimate). It first surfaced in small storefronts where a handful of sales is enough to chart, like Macau (#2), Indonesia, and Egypt, and only later in the US.

Prices change daily. US store 10-31 to 11-02 it went $2.99,11-03, $11-04 down to $1.99,11-05 $3.99,11-06 $4.99; Egypt and Australia move up and down in step (App Store prices by store, day by day). Cut the price to chase the charts, raise it once the exposure comes.

What I couldn't find: searching TikTok for "duopaper" turns up nothing relevant; no paid ads or creator partnerships seen. 10-31 There is one Duopaper demo video posted from an account called @WordWordsWordle, which matches the same developer's game "Word Words" and can no longer be opened. Most likely the old game promo account was simply renamed to @OnlyGoodApps (inference).

Who it's competing with

The niche was far from empty. As soon as Duo launched, dozens of new apps with Duo/Fold in their names appeared, and wallpapers were the most crowded category.

FoldTales is the one to study: same idea, earlier, same price point, but it only charted in 2 small storefronts. Duopaper didn't win on the idea. It won by renaming, posting on X every day, replying under big accounts, and getting picked up by MacStories. In absolute terms, the Duo wallpaper demand was really captured by free apps with existing user bases like DuoTheme. Duopaper only stood out on the small paid charts.

How much it's earning

Nobody knows. It has 1 ratings globally, and small paid apps rarely get many ratings to begin with. Going by rank #14 in the US paid Photo & Video category, a few dozen sales a day at $2–5 each, that's roughly tens to a hundred-plus dollars a day (estimate). This is a small business that makes money in a new-hardware window, not something that can sustain you long term.

If it were you

One-line take: Building a Duo wallpaper app now is already too late. What's worth learning is the playbook: launch a single-feature app in the first week of new hardware, with zero-cost distribution.

Who it suits: Indie devs who can ship an app within a week, can use AI to batch-generate art, and are willing to post demo videos and replies on X every day.

Who it doesn't suit: People who want long-term subscription revenue, and people unwilling to actively go after exposure on social platforms. FoldTales already showed that a good idea with no distribution effort is as good as unlisted.

How to do it: Stop making wallpapers. Look for things unique to the Duo's "two screens, one hinge" form factor that wallpapers haven't filled: close/open-triggered toys (Fold & Squish, in the same MacStories piece, lets you smear paint by closing the screen and reveals a butterfly painting when you open it), dual-screen-specific utilities, and kid-friendly picture books that open like a page turn. Put "Duo" in the name, price as a one-time purchase, and first try to chart in the paid category in small storefronts.

How to get users: Launch a dedicated X account for the product, pair one fixed phrasing with a few seconds of close/open video and post it on repeat; watch MacStories, 9to5Mac, and Apple-focused YouTubers' Duo roundup posts and reply under them right away; also pitch them for their next issue.

When to be early: Duo mass shipments began in January 2027, which was the second wave of new-hardware buyers and the second window. Launching by late December 2026 is the safer bet. The window closes before Apple's built-in equivalent features or large apps flood the category.

Signs you've misread it: After the January mass shipments, paid Duo-related apps didn't climb the category charts again, or the charts were filled with long-running free apps like DuoTheme. That would mean big companies and existing users absorbed the demand for this format, leaving indie developers only the two weeks around launch.

Why Duopaper: Panoramic Wallpapers (iOS id6821872148) was able to run up numbers

Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our appstore database (app_day / app_profile / v_chart, from 2026-10-28), Apple lookup API, web pages (Jina search/read), TikHub. Anything unverified is marked "unverified".

One line

Duopaper by CyberGame Limited (a bulk developer of reskinned mini-games and utilities). Launched the week the iPhone Duo (Apple's foldable, pre-orders 10-16, on sale 10-23) hit shelves. It's a paid wallpaper app where every image is made as a pair for the Duo's outer and inner screens: closed, you see one small character; open, you see the full scene. Priced $1.99–4.99 and adjusted almost daily. Its early traction came from the new-hardware launch window + a low bar for the paid category chart + the developer's own X account replying under big accounts' Duo posts with demo videos + a MacStories feature. Absolute numbers are small (1 ratings worldwide).

1. Core numbers and data

  • Released 2026-10-19,10-20 as 1.0.1, renamed from Unfold Wallpapers to Duopaper (release note verbatim: "Unfold Wallpapers is now Duopaper"). iOS 18+, 69 MB, Photo & Video category. (Apple lookup, us)
  • Price: US store lookup currently $4.99. The database shows the same app's price changing daily (local currency): US 10-31~11-02 $2.99 → 11-03/04 $1.99 → 11-05 $3.99 → 11-06 $4.99; Egypt 149.99→99.99→199.99→249.99 EGP; Australia 4.99→2.99→5.99→7.99 AUD. MacStories' 11-04 piece quotes $3.99. This suggests the developer is testing prices daily and raising them once the app climbs the charts. (appstore database, app_day.price)
  • Store descriptions still contain "The entire experience is free, with no ads, in-app purchases, or account" (e.g., Finnish store pages), and a startup-ideas.tech video card points out the contradiction: "listing says free and $2.99". Likely it was originally built as free, or the description is template boilerplate (unverified).
  • Rating: only 1 worldwide (US store 10-26 with a 5-star "Nice tools / Nice wallpapers" review), and the rating count barely moves. Paid small apps get very few reviews anyway, so the rating doesn't reflect sales, but it does suggest the absolute volume is small.
  • Chart positions (paid Photo & Video category chart, app_day):

2. Competitors: who else is doing this

The "Duo app gold rush" started as soon as the iPhone Duo was announced. Counting only new apps with Duo/Fold in the name, the database has dozens after 10-20 (fold counters, angle meters, teleprompters, keyboards, cameras...). Apps specifically for Duo wallpapers:

Bottom line: the niche is far from empty, and the closest competitor, FoldTales, launched 10 days earlier with almost the same concept. Duopaper didn't win by being first to the idea.

3. Growth tactics: where users come from

  1. New-hardware launch window (platform event, confirmed). The iPhone Duo opened pre-orders 10-16 and sold out within minutes, with shipping pushed to 2027 January (Forbes 2026-10-16; tech-insider.org). It went on general sale 10-23, with almost no stock in stores (PCMag, TheNextWeb). The first thing new owners do is customize their home screen. Duo-wallpaper videos on TikTok routinely hit hundreds of thousands to millions of views (@usmanafridi 10-28 1.87M views; @heillyraices 10-22 1M; @appledsign 10-26 177K), and r/iPhoneDuo has threads like "Wallpapers?" and "How are you planning to set up your Duo". The demand came from the platform, not from Duopaper.
  2. App Store search and rename piggybacking (confirmed). 10-20 was renamed from "Unfold Wallpapers" to "Duopaper", with the subtitle Panoramic Wallpapers, so a search for "duo wallpaper" hits its name directly. Apple's own editorial piece "Great Apps and Games on iPhone Duo" does not feature it (not on the pages we read).
  3. Developer-run X account + replies under big accounts (confirmed; the main active tactic). The X account @OnlyGoodApps (display name "Duopaper", bio "Wallpapers made for iPhone Duo", account 2023 years old, 1,531 posts) posts short demo videos daily: closed, one tiny scene; open, the full picture. Captions follow a fixed format ("Folded: one tiny plane. Open it and the flight had other plans"). The key move is replying with links under big accounts' Duo posts:
    • 11-05 replied under MacStories' tweet about "Our Favorite iPhone Duo Apps": "A small one for Vol. 2: Duopaper" plus a demo video (x.com/macstoriesnet/status/2118058070974587083);
    • 11-05 replied under tech YouTuber Vadim Yuryev's tweet praising Deck-Man: "While you're collecting Duo-native apps, add Duopaper…" (x.com/VadimYuryev/status/2118399952951079191).
    • 10-31 startup-ideas.tech archived a Duopaper video posted by @WordWordsWordle. That account name matches the same developer's game "Word Words", which is now 404. Likely the same account was renamed to @OnlyGoodApps (unverified), meaning the developer repurposed an old game promo account for this product.
    • The pinned post is labeled "Made with AI", so the artwork is most likely AI-generated (inferred).
  4. Press coverage (confirmed). MacStories published "Our Favorite iPhone Duo Apps: Weird and Wonderful, Vol. 1" by John Voorhees on 2026-11-04 19:04 UTC. It features Duopaper, praising its "folded paper style" illustrations and listing the price at $3.99. Timeline: in the US store it went from #44 at 11-05 to #14 at 11-06, and during the same period it charted in Singapore, Australia, Germany, France, the UK, Switzerland and the UAE (5 stores → 10 stores), so the timing lines up. One open question: the developer 11-05 replied in the comments saying "Vol. 2 should include Duopaper," which suggests it may not have been in the article when it first went up and was added later (unverified).
  5. Not found: a TikTok search for "duopaper" returned no related videos (TikHub); our local X corpus doesn't contain it; no evidence of paid ads, creator partnerships, or Reddit self-promotion (Reddit pages were blocked and couldn't be read). Macau, Egypt and Indonesia were the first small stores to chart, which fits the pattern of a paid store with a very low bar, where a few sales get you on the chart. Nothing suggests paid acquisition.

4. Why it took off

  • Timing: the release date (10-19) falls right between Duo pre-orders (10-16) and general sale (10-23), so early buyers could find it as soon as they got their devices.
  • A concept you can explain in a 7-second video: "Close it, a small character; open it, and you discover it lives in a bigger, weirder world". Naturally suited to short video and replies. Its X copy keeps coming back to one point: "every wallpaper treats unfold like a zoom button" (other wallpapers just zoom in when you open the phone).
  • Low bar on the paid category chart: the top 20 paid apps in Photo & Video are mostly cameras and utilities, with few paid wallpaper apps, so a modest number of sales gets you into the top 20, and once charted, more people see you.
  • Actively seeking exposure in Apple circles: the developer's own account replied under the Duo posts of big accounts like MacStories and Vadim Yuryev. After MacStories featured it, the rank jumped a tier.
  • Pricing: one-time purchase, adjusted daily. It dropped to $1.99 while climbing, rose to $4.99 after getting exposure, and revenue is one-time.

5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

The differentiator is a paired narrative in the content: each image is composed for both the outer screen (vertical, a single block in the middle) and the inner screen (wide panorama), so closed it's a small story and open it's a twist. Comparison: DuoTheme/Duo Wallpapers compete on volume plus themes/AI, FoldWall is a cropping tool, and official and free sites only fit one image across both screens.

But the differentiator is not unique: FoldTales (launched 10-09, $3.99) has nearly the same concept, with almost identical store copy ("A scene outside. A surprise inside"), yet it only charted in 2 stores. So the differentiator is necessary but not decisive. What made Duopaper outperform FoldTales is distribution: renaming to ride the "Duo" keyword, a self-run X account posting demo videos at high frequency, replying under big accounts, and getting a MacStories feature. Meanwhile older apps like DuoTheme still pull much larger volume on the strength of long-time users and a free model. Duopaper just stands out on the paid small-chart dimension.

6. How many people saw it / did anyone copy it

  • Revenue isn't public: no TrustMRR listing, no founder revenue posts.
  • Covered in a MacStories piece (a mid-sized Apple-focused outlet; that tweet got 1,480 views and 4 likes), and aggregator sites like startup-ideas.tech, DuoKits and AppBrain have pages for it. It's circulating in small circles.
  • Copycats: a flood of Duo wallpaper apps in one week (Diptych 10-23, Wallfold 10-22, FoldWall-AI 10-28, Cool Wallpaper Duo 11-02, Duo Wallpapers & Themes 10-21), and FoldTales was even earlier than Duopaper. No one has clearly copied Duopaper, but this niche is already crowded.

7. What to borrow

  • The play: "new hardware form factor ships → single-purpose app built for it within 7 days". Pick topics by form-factor differences (two screens, hinge, angle), and AI can mass-produce the content. CyberGame also shipped Play Music Theory Games and others during this Duo window.
  • The paid Photo & Video category chart is a low bar. One-time purchase plus daily price tweaks, and charting earns free exposure.
  • Set up a product-dedicated X account, post demo videos with a fixed caption format, and reply on relevant posts from big industry accounts. Almost zero cost, and this one earned a MacStories mention.
  • Renamed to put the core search term (Duo) in the name.

8. Still unclear

  • Real unit sales and revenue (Apple doesn't disclose them; 1 ratings can't tell you much). The US Paid category #14 roughly corresponds to dozens of sales a day (inferred).
  • Was the MacStories piece written first, or did it come after the reply?
  • Is @WordWordsWordle just @OnlyGoodApps under a new name?
  • The description says "completely free" but the app charges. How does that square, and will it bring refunds or bad reviews?
  • Bulk iPhone Duo shipments don't arrive until 2027-01, so the real demand peak may still be ahead. It's also possible Apple's system-level Duo wallpaper features or editorial picks will crowd it out.
