# "Em từ thread qua đây ạ": how a Vietnamese Chinese-learning app got past cold start on loyal followers

**What it is** A HSK 3.0 Chinese learning and mock exam app for Vietnamese users. Vocabulary, grammar and mock exams are free; only the AI assistant charges a small membership fee.

**Why it took off** The founder's TikTok account group, about 60k followers, plus the free website nhaihsk.com built up a user base first. When the app launched, they followed over and wrote reviews. Free content also hit Vietnamese students' price sensitivity, and the timing lined up with the HSK 3.0 syllabus change.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Vietnamese HSK app. Take its playbook: become a study-content account yourself, build traffic with a free website first, copy one template across several exam languages, and launch around an exam revision. Apply it to other "minority-language audience × major exam" combinations.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and development cost is low, with room in other countries and exams. But Vietnamese HSK is already held down by Hanzii, and the traction came from the founder's fan base, which followers can't copy. Revenue is also unverified. Spreading in small circles

Nhai HSK is a Chinese learning and HSK exam prep app for Vietnamese users. It launched in 2026 Oct 20, got 96 ratings in 17 days averaging 4.99, and peaked at #76 on the Vietnam Education Free chart. It has no paid acquisition and no press coverage, and its features aren't unique. It rode three things others can't easily copy: a TikTok account network built over a year under a consistent persona, a free web version that ran for over a month before the app, and the timing of HSK exams opening at the end of 3.0. This piece covers how it took off, how big it really is, and whether you can run the same playbook.

### The first review on launch day

On Oct 20, 2026, the TikTok account @nhaihsk.com posted a video captioned with just one line: "Nhai thôiiiiii" ("Just chew" — Nhai is Vietnamese for "chew"). It got 9,095 views (TikTok, 11-06). The same day, the app's first review appeared on the Vietnam App Store, titled "10 điểm ko có nhưng" ("10 points, no buts").

> "Em từ thread qua đây ạ." (I came here from the Threads.) ... "Could the developer add a photo-to-identify-objects feature like the Japanese version?"

The review carries two signals: this person didn't find it by searching the store, she followed it from a community, and she knows there's a "Japanese version." The dozens of reviews after it share the same tone. 10-22 someone wrote "I saw it on TikTok the first few days the website went up, and now there's an app"; 10-26 someone wrote "I've followed your website, profile and FB group for a while, and now I'm here for the app"; 10-25 someone wrote "I followed from the website to the app."

In other words, on the day this app launched, users were already waiting for it.

### What it is

Opens to the new HSK 3.0 syllabus: HSK 1 to 9 word lists, each word with pinyin, Sino-Vietnamese reading, audio and example sentences; seven practice modes (flashcards, multiple choice, type the pinyin, reading, listening, battle, and a mini game called Hanzi Dance); spaced-repetition review reminders; grammar organized by lesson; and HSK 1–3 mock exams with listening, timing and scoring. Later versions added HSK 5 and 6, bringing it to 25 mock exam sets and nearly 600 reading passages (App Store product page and version history, 11-06).

All learning content is free. Only the AI assistant is paid: ₫49k a month or ₫499k a year (about $19), with no auto-renewal. 17 days saw 7 releases; the latest one (11-03) added a lock screen widget.

The people behind it call themselves "Thợ code học tiếng Nhật" (a programmer learning Japanese) on Threads and their website. The same template first became the Japanese app Nhai Kanji (listed 10-05), then the Korean app Nhai Topik (listed 10-08), and Chinese is the third. An English version, Nhai Toeic, is on the way. The website says "one method, three languages." The iOS developer account is in a personal name, and the Vietnamese exchange student studying in Jiangsu who appears on TikTok for Nhai HSK is not confirmed to be connected to the others.

### How big it really is

| Date | Vietnam App Store ratings | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 48 | – |
| 10-31 | 70 | 8 |
| 11-03 | 84 | 7 |
| 11-06 | 96 | 4 |

(App Store Vietnam, by day)

Adds roughly five ratings a day, no acceleration. On the charts, Vietnam's Education Top Free ranked #96 on 10-28, its best was #76 on 11-01, and by 11-06 it had slipped back to #170. 11-03 hit the Education Top Grossing chart once at #193. It has never charted in any other country. The Android version, 10-30, was listed, and as of 11-06 had 685 installs and about twenty-some reviews on Google Play. The ratio of reviews to installs is about 3%, which is high, so the traffic is most likely from friends and fans (inference).

Compare it with Vietnam's Chinese leader: Hanzii added 414 ratings over the last 7 days, SuperChinese 291, and Nhai HSK 34, less than a tenth of Hanzii. It's a fast-growing newcomer, not a big player in this market.

Revenue is not visible. The one clue comes from its Korean sibling: Nhai Topik has only 26 ratings, yet it hit #52 and #56 on Vietnam's Education Top Grossing chart on 11-02 and 11-06. That suggests two things: the Vietnam Top Grossing bar is low, and this app family is already taking in money (inference).

### Where users come from

**The founder's TikTok account group.** The main account @thocodehoctiengnhat posts Japanese learning content, with 42.6k followers, 795k likes and 693 videos. It later opened @nhaitopik.com (8,305 followers), @nhaitoeic (7,238 followers) and @nhaihsk.com (4,266 followers), about 60k followers combined (TikHub, 11-06). The persona of @nhaihsk.com is "a foreign student learning Chinese in Jiangsu who vibe-coded a website for learning HSK." Its most-viewed video is 9-20 with 115k views; most others get between six hundred and two thousand views.

**Web first, app second.** nhaihsk.com has been live since at least September, and 9-10 people have already promoted it in other Chinese-learning Facebook groups. The official Facebook group "Nhai tiếng Trung mỗi ngày" posted a launch preview with 94 reactions and 10-14 shares; in the comments someone asked why it doesn't show up in iOS search. In the first week after launch, the app's ratings and chart position were largely carried by these web users.

**Recruiting on Threads.** The account @nhai_language_ replies under posts where people ask "is there a free app for learning Chinese?" and also posts things like "Nhai HSK is completely free, enjoy," with dozens of likes per post.

**Cross-promotion between the group chats.** 11-04: the English account @nhaitoeic ran one borderline vocab video that hit 1.13M views and 160k shares, with the caption "we have a Japanese/Chinese/Korean study bundle at home, grab it from my profile." But 11-05 and 11-06's Chinese-version ratings only moved by 8 and 4 reviews. Viral traffic is hard to convert into downloads for a focused learning app (inference).

**Not seen:** paid ads, paid influencers, discount codes. Competitors in Vietnam (flashcard apps) often use TikTok influencers with discount codes; Nhai does not. A few students posted videos tagged #nhaihsk on their own, getting a few hundred to one or two thousand views, which looks like a classmate circle.

### Why users pay

The words that appear most in reviews are "free" and "có tâm" (heartfelt). "The app is free, the interface is nice, the review feature is really useful"; "Free and it has everything, công đức vô lượng (immeasurable merit)"; "Free learning is already good enough, but I bought the membership to support it anyway" (App Store Vietnam, 10-28).

The pricing is the hook. Vietnam's established Chinese-learning apps charge 500k to 100 million VND a year: Hanzii Premium 599k–1,199k, SuperChinese 649k–1,099k. Nhai makes the vocab, grammar and mock tests free and only charges for AI, with no auto-renewal. In a market that's wary of subscriptions and mostly students, that's an easy pitch to make.

The other half is timing. The HSK 3.0 official exam launched globally in 2026-12-13, and Vietnamese test-takers are looking for materials for the new syllabus. Nhai's name, description and website all push "chuẩn HSK 3.0" (HSK 3.0-standard). Other new Vietnamese apps entered at the same time, including XieHanzi (listed 11-04), Baolingo and Hanbeego, with ratings between 0 and 122. Everyone is riding this wave, but without built-in traffic, none of them will take off.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale (Vietnam App Store ratings, 11-06) | How Nhai differs |
|---|---|---|
| Hanzii (Vietnamese homegrown, the same company also has HeyChina and Migii HSK) | 33,279, Education Top Grossing #11 | A dictionary-born leader with heavy paywalls; Migii HSK's mock exams directly overlap with Nhai's |
| SuperChinese / SuperTest (Shanghai Yuxuan) | 41,102 / 8,169, Education Top Grossing #4 | Strong AI courses, expensive subscription, no Sino-Vietnamese readings |
| HelloChinese | 50,217 | A globally general course, not targeted at Vietnamese learners or HSK 3.0 test-takers |
| BaoBao (Vietnamese developer, 2025-06) | 2,885 | Takes a reading-real-content route, ₫599k per year |
| XieHanzi, Baolingo, Hanbeego | 0–122 | New arrivals chasing HSK 3.0 at the same time |

On features, Nhai has nothing these others lack, and nothing they don't also have. It differs in only two ways: its content is free, and the founder is the content creator.

### If it were you

**The verdict:** Building another Vietnamese HSK app like Nhai HSK makes no sense. Hanzii already dominates, and a group of new entrants is crowding in. What's worth taking is the playbook: a learner becomes the content creator, uses a free website to build an audience first, copies one template across several exam languages, and launches on the exam's syllabus change. This playbook still has room in other "minority-language native speakers × major exam" combinations.

**Who it suits:** developers who are learning a language themselves and are willing to appear on camera with learning videos every day, or language-learning creators with tens of thousands of followers who can quickly build a flashcard-plus-mock-exam template with AI.

**Who it doesn't suit:** people without a content channel who want to cold-start through store search and paid ads. This category has local leaders in every market, paid acquisition for learning apps is expensive, and Nhai's free content plus a ₫499k yearly price can't support paid ads.

**How to do it:**

- Pick a combination where the native-speaker population is not huge, established apps charge heavily, and there has been an exam change in the last year or two. For example, Indonesian, Thai or Filipino speakers taking HSK 3.0, or Vietnamese and Indonesian speakers taking JLPT or TOPIK (inference; first check who leads the Chinese, Japanese and Korean learning categories in each country's stores and what they charge).

- Start with a web version, releasing the syllabus word lists and mock exams for free, so search and group posts can find them. Move to the app once you have a few hundred people visiting daily.

- Keep content free. Charge only for per-use features such as AI explanations and speaking scoring. Use one-time monthly or annual passes, not auto-renewing subscriptions.

- Write the template as multi-language from the start. The second language only swaps the question bank and word lists.

**How to get users:** post real daily life of "I'm learning X" on your own TikTok, with the tool shown; answer questions like "is there a free app?" in Facebook study groups and on Threads; a week or two before launch, post a preview in the groups, and on launch day ask existing users to leave reviews. Don't expect general entertainment viral videos to bring downloads.

**When to move early:** In this HSK 3.0 wave, the period just before and after the 2026-12-13 exam is when people are most desperate for materials. Starting now means you're too late to catch Vietnam's wave. In other countries and other exams, the window follows that exam's syllabus changes and registration season.

**What would mean you got it wrong:** if Nhai HSK's daily new ratings fall back to single digits around the exam and it stops charting in Education Top Grossing, that means after the old fans carried it through cold start, this playbook isn't pulling in new users, and its ceiling is the founder's own follower count. Conversely, if it climbs to dozens of ratings a day in December and enters the top 50 of Education Top Grossing, that means "free content + cheap AI membership" can really break out of a small circle in a price-sensitive market, and this playbook is worth copying seriously.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **founder's TikTok account group** : @thocodehoctiengnhat 42,648 followers, plus @nhaitopik.com 8,305, @nhaitoeic 7,238, @nhaihsk.com 4,266 followers; @nhaihsk.com's top single video has 115k views (TikHub 11-06)

- **Checked** **cross-promotion between accounts and a broad-traffic hit** : @nhaitoeic's 11-04 video got 1.13M views, captioned "Japan-China-Korea study bundle, get it from the bio". But the next day iOS ratings only went up by 8, so the conversion was limited.

- **Confirmed** **free website builds users before moving them into the app** : nhaihsk.com 2026-09 is live and promoted in third-party Facebook groups; the official Facebook group 10-14 posted a launch preview (94 reactions, 17 comments); the Facebook page has 914 followers with both platform links

- **Confirmed** **Threads Q&A capture** : @nhai_language_ replies to "free Chinese learning app" posts with nhaihsk.com, and also posts "Nhai HSK is completely free"

- Inference **small creators / classmates posting organically** : @sooooobad02, @yunnn568, @baechann1901 (exchange students at Jiangsu Normal University) post #nhaihsk videos with a few hundred to one or two thousand views; whether there are paid partnerships is unverified

- Inference **paid ads** : none found; ad libraries did not cover it

## Nhai HSK - Chinese Learning & HSK Prep (iOS 6822550491) Research Report

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our appstore / googleplay databases (DuckDB on agent-im), iTunes lookup, App Store / Google Play product pages, TikHub (TikTok), Jina web search (Facebook, Threads, official site). Anything unverified is marked "unverified".

### One line

It's a Chinese learning + HSK test-prep app for Vietnamese users, organized by the HSK 3.0 standard. All content is free; only the AI assistant is paid. It's built by a Vietnamese programmer and language learner ("Thợ code học tiếng Nhật", 42.6k followers on Douyin/TikTok). The same template also powers Nhai Kanji (Japanese), Nhai Topik (Korean) and Nhai HSK (Chinese), with Nhai Toeic in progress. Its traction comes mainly from three things: the founder's existing TikTok account network and FB/Threads community referrals; a free web version at nhaihsk.com to build users first, then moving those users over once the App launched; and the timing of the HSK 3.0 official global rollout in 2026-12-13. It's still small, and so far only in the Vietnamese market.

### 1. Data: how fast it's actually growing

- **Launch** : iOS 2026-10-20 (lookup releaseDate); Android 2026-10-30 (googleplay library, released; package com.nhailanguage.hsk; developer name "Nhai Language"). The iOS developer account is registered under the personal name Thi Trang Nhung Vu.

- **Ratings count (iOS, vn)** : 10-28 48 → 11-06 96 (appstore.app_day). Up +34 over the last 7 days, roughly 5 per day; the lookup on the day showed 97 ratings, averaging 4.99.

- **Chart** : Vietnam Education, Top Free. 10-28 peaked at #96,11-01 and 76 11-06 later slid to #170. 11-03 also hit #193 on the Vietnam Education Top Grossing chart (appstore.chart_rank). It never charted in any other country.

- **Android** : 685 installs, 23–25 reviews (googleplay.app_profile; Play product page). 23 Play reviews against 685 installs is a ratio of about 3%, which is high. It suggests most users come from community contacts or fans. This is an inference.

- **Sister apps** : Nhai Topik (2026-10-08 launch) has 26 ratings but hit #52 and #56 on Vietnam Education Top Grossing (11-02, 11-06). Nhai Kanji (2026-10-05) has 21 ratings. Two takeaways: the Vietnam Education Top Grossing bar is low, and this family of apps has started to earn money.

- **Releases** : 7 versions in 17 days since launch (1.0.0 to 1.0.6). Added HSK 5/6 full 25 mock exams, 600 new reading passages, flashcards with images, and a lock-screen widget (App Store version history). The iteration pace is fast.

- **Comparison** : Hanzii, the Vietnamese Chinese-learning leader, added 7 ratings in the last 414 days; SuperChinese 291; HeyChina 169 (appstore.app_profile, vn). Nhai HSK's 34 is roughly 8% of Hanzii's. In absolute terms it's still a small player, but its growth rate among new entrants stands out.

### 2. Competitors (doing the same thing)

The Vietnamese "Chinese / HSK" category is crowded. The main groups are:

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (vn ratings count, appstore library 11-06) | How it differs from Nhai HSK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hanzii: Learn Chinese & HSK (Linh Nguyen / Vietnamese team; the same company also runs HeyChina and Migii) | iOS/Android/web | 2019 | 33,279, Education Top Grossing #11 | A Vietnamese dictionary-turned-learning leader with heavy paywalls (Premium 599k–1,199k VND). Nhai's content is fully free, with an annual AI plan at only 499k. |
| HeyChina (same developer) | iOS | 2022 | 15,716 | Focuses on speaking courses, lifetime membership 489k–599k |
| Migii HSK (same developer) | iOS / web at hsk.migii.net | 2022 | 2,992 | A dedicated HSK mock-exam app, directly overlapping Nhai's mock-exam features |
| SuperChinese / SuperTest (Shanghai Yuxuan) | iOS/Android | 2019/2018 | 41,102 / 8,169, Top Grossing #4 | AI courses from a Chinese company; expensive subscriptions (649k–1,099k per year); not native to Vietnamese, no Sino-Vietnamese readings |
| HelloChinese | iOS/Android | 2015 | 50,217 | Global general-purpose course, paid, no Sino-Vietnamese readings |
| BaoBao(Quan Pham) | iOS | 2025-06 | 2,885 | A Vietnamese developer's "read real content" approach, 599k per year |
| Baolingo, Hanbeego, XieHanzi (2026-11-04 newly launched, HSK 3.0 + YCT + Boya), HiHSK.com (web), Học Bá HSK (online tutoring) | iOS/web | 2026 | Mostly 0–122 | Vietnamese HSK products that entered the market around the same time, showing everyone is chasing the HSK 3.0 update wave |
| HSK GO (official test-center app) | iOS | 2025 | Not checked | Official, covers only HSK 1–3, English interface |

Conclusion: there's a lot of competition, and a local giant (the Hanzii family) already exists. Nhai has no exclusive features. Its differences are mainly pricing (all content free), the new HSK 3.0 syllabus, Vietnam-specific design such as Sino-Vietnamese readings, and the founder's built-in content traffic.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **The founder's TikTok account network (confirmed)** : the main account @thocodehoctiengnhat (Thợ code học tiếng Nhật) has 42,648 followers, 795k likes and 693 videos, with the bio "Sứ mệnh mới" (new mission). There are also @nhaitopik.com with 8,305 followers, @nhaitoeic with 7,238 followers, and @nhaihsk.com with 4,266 followers (TikHub 11-06). The bio of @nhaihsk.com reads "Studying Chinese in Jiangsu, vibecoded a website for learning HSK", and the on-camera face is a Vietnamese international student named Phương Thảo, positioned as "a student who builds their own tools". Its biggest hit is a 9-20 video with 115k views, and the "Nhai thôiiiiii" video from the day the App launched got 10-20 thousand views... wait, that is 9 thousand views. The rest mostly sit at 600–2,000 views.

2. **矩阵互相导流(已确认)** :@nhaitoeic 11-04 发了一条擦边词汇视频,113 万播放、16 万分享,文案写着「家里有日中韩学习套餐,去 bio 拿」。不过 11-05、11-06 的 iOS 评分只涨了 8 和 4,看不出明显的承接。泛流量的爆款转化到垂直 App 很有限。这是推断。

3. **Web first, users migrate to the App (confirmed)** : nhaihsk.com has been live for at least 2026-09, and 9-10 someone promoted it in a third-party FB group, "Học tiếng Trung chuẩn và chất". Before the App launched, the official FB group "Nhai tiếng Trung mỗi ngày" posted 10-14 with the announcement "Now live on iOS, Android in 14 days" (94 reactions, 17 comments, including people asking why they couldn't find it on iOS). The FB page has 914 followers and links to the App Store, Play, web and TikTok together.

4. **Q&A capture on Threads (confirmed)** : @nhai_language_ (Nhai Global) replies under posts asking "any free apps or websites for learning Chinese?", and posts things like "Nhai HSK is fully free, enjoy". Individual posts get dozens of likes.

5. **Small KOCs / classmates posting videos (partly confirmed)** : @sooooobad02 (10-08,1,868 views, "nhai hsk1 cùng nhai hsk"), @yunnn568 (9-22, "web free nè #nhaihsk"), @baechann1901 (an international student at Jiangsu Normal University, hashtag #changdangnhaiHsk79). View counts are small, most likely coming from the founder's classmates or fans. Whether they are paid partnerships is unverified.

6. **Ads** : no evidence of paid acquisition found. The ad library only tracks a listed set of products, so not finding anything doesn't mean nothing was run. Competitors commonly use TikTok creators with discount codes (e.g. VocaDaily's CHAY05, 4You's NHIM); no such pattern was seen for Nhai.

7. **Reviews** : iOS average 4.99. Review titles are along the lines of "Chiếc app free đỉnh nhất", "Quá đỉnh" and "App hay nên tải", in a community voice praising that it's "free" and the "admin" for their care. Whether reviews were solicited in the community is unverified, but a rating average and rating rate this high fit a community user base arriving all at once.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Built-in traffic** : the founder had built up about 43k followers on Japanese content, and added three new accounts (Korean, English, Chinese) over 2026 years. That's about 60k TikTok followers in total, plus FB groups and Threads. Cold start cost no money.

- **Web builds users, App harvests them** : the web version is free, searchable by SEO and in group posts. When the App launched, the first wave of users and reviews was ready. Within 8 days of the iOS launch it had 48 ratings and reached the top 100 of Vietnam Education Top Free.

- **Free pricing hits Vietnamese students' price sensitivity** : local giants Hanzii and SuperChinese charge 500k to over 1M VND per year. Nhai says "all learning content is free" and charges only for the AI assistant (49k per month, 499k per year, no auto-renewal). The most frequent word in reviews is "free".

- **Timing** : HSK 3.0 officially launches worldwide on 2026-12-13, and Vietnamese test-takers are scrambling for materials for the new syllabus. Nhai brands itself everywhere, from its name and description to its website, as "chuẩn HSK 3.0", with HSK 1–9 vocab lists and HSK 1–6 mock exams.

- **Copy the template, iterate fast** : Kanji, Topik and HSK share one template of "flashcards + SRS + mock exams + shadowing + leaderboard + calligraphy PDFs". That's why it could ship 7 versions in 17 days and add 25 mock-exam sets. The official site describes it as "one method, three languages". Based on the vibecoding persona, AI was used heavily in development; this is an inference.

### 5. Differentiation

- Nothing exclusive on features: flashcards, SRS, mock exams and Sino-Vietnamese readings are all available from Hanzii and Migii.

- What's really different is the **business model and distribution** : all content free plus a cheap AI membership; the founder is both a learner and a content creator, with one persona driving a portfolio of three or four language apps.

- This one is different. It's a real reason it took off, but it only gets as far as "cold start worked in the Vietnamese niche." It's still an order of magnitude short of Hanzii's level of 400 ratings a week, and there's no evidence yet that the free content converts to revenue (Nhai HSK has only charted once in Top Grossing, at #193).

### 6. How many people have seen it

- No public revenue (not on TrustMRR, no one has posted revenue figures). Not found on X (x-radar 0 results), and no media coverage.

- Discussion stays within Vietnamese-language TikTok, FB groups and Threads. It hasn't spread beyond Vietnam.

- Verdict: **it's circulating in small circles** , still within the Vietnamese-language learner community.

### 7. Copycats

No one specifically seen copying it. Around the same time, XieHanzi (2026-11-04), Baolingo, Hanbeego and other new Vietnamese HSK apps launched, but this looks more like everyone chasing the HSK 3.0 update than copying Nhai.

### 8. What to borrow

- The "language learner as the IP + one template copied across multiple test languages (JLPT / TOPIK / HSK / TOEIC)" approach has very low marginal development cost, and each language can get its own TikTok account and SEO.

- Build a free website first to gather community and search traffic, then launch the App. The first week's ratings and chart placement rely on those early users.

- Launching inside the exam-revision window (HSK 3.0) and using "new standard" to outrank older competitors.

- Free content with paid AI only, using a short non-auto-renewing membership. Suits a price-sensitive market like Vietnam that dislikes subscriptions.

### 9. Still unclear

- Actual downloads and revenue: Apple doesn't disclose them. Nhai HSK has only reached Top Grossing #193 once.

- Whether it runs paid ads or paid KOCs: the ad library doesn't cover it.

- Whether the good reviews were solicited through the community.

- The recall card's claim of "reached the top 20 within 1 days of iOS launch": the original post wasn't found. Our data starts at 10-28, and the best rank we saw was #76 on Top Free.

- Founding team makeup: the developer account is under the personal name Thi Trang Nhung Vu, Threads describes the account as a "programmer", and the on-camera host on TikTok is Phương Thảo. How these three are related is unverified.
