# A drone alert map that hit #1 in Russia's News chart in two weeks: crowded on Android, only this one on iPhone

**What it is** A live map for Russians showing drone, missile and air-threat warnings. It aggregates official and public channel alerts and pushes "danger/all clear" by region. Free, ad-supported.

**Why it took off** It launched the day a record drone attack was underway, and Russian-region iPhones had almost no native equivalent (local devs struggle to ship). The developer, based abroad, copied the playbook from their earlier ГдеБЕНЗ: a trending keyword in the name, the low-bar News category, and store search as the only channel.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy this one; copy the playbook. When a crisis creates demand on the web or Telegram and an app store is still empty, ship first within a week, put the week's trending keyword in the name, and pick a low-bar category.

C grade: the playbook is clear and worth learning, but this app's iOS gap is already filled and copycats are arriving. Demand moves entirely with the war, monetization is ads only, and there are accuracy, legal and App Review risks. Copying it isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

"Карта БПЛА — радар онлайн" (Drone Map · Online Radar) launched Oct 22, just as Russia suffered some of the largest drone attacks on record. From 10-28 to 11-06 it sat at #1 in the Russia App Store News free chart every day. The demand itself isn't new; Telegram and Android already had millions of users. It won on two things: no one had built it on iPhone, and the developer had a playbook that had worked three months earlier. The playbook is worth studying; this particular app isn't worth copying.

### The night the internet went down

On the night of Oct 28 to 29, Russian air defenses said they shot down 1,214 drones, 600 of them heading for Moscow. lenta.ru called it "one of the largest attacks in 2026 years" the next morning. On nights like this, many parts of Russia switch mobile networks to a "whitelist": only a few approved services still load, and everything else is cut off.

On the evening of Oct 30, the app shipped version 1.0.5, and the first line of the release notes read:

> The map opens even when our server is unreachable or connectivity is restricted. (Translated from the Russian release note.)

The trick is a built-in base map of Russia with the danger zones drawn on it; when the network comes back, it switches to the live map. That same day, its rating count rose by 63 in one day, the first spike since launch (App Store ratings across all regions, 10-29 67 → 10-30 131). Within two weeks, this was its 5th version.

### What it is

A map of drone threats across all of Russia. It shows which region, district or city has currently declared a "drone danger", with missile and air threats marked in another color, and when each was declared and lifted. The data comes from governors, local authorities and the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) announcements, plus public Telegram channels, and the map refreshes automatically every few seconds.

One smart detail: each danger zone is labeled with how reliable the signal is: "official", "two independent sources", or "single source (early signal)". The store page even says "a quiet informational map", with no shoot-downs, air defense positions or flight tracks shown. That avoids legal trouble and separates it from channels that grow subscriptions by amplifying panic.

Other features: "My region" always pinned first, a feed of recent alerts and all-clears, dark mode, no sign-up, and the map can be "shared to any chat app with one link".

### How fast it grew

| Date | Ratings count, all storefronts | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 61 | — |
| 10-30 | 131 | +63 |
| 11-02 | 278 | +54 |
| 11-04 | 369 | +44 |
| 11-06 | 498 | +80 |

Almost all of it comes from Russia: 437 ratings in the Russian region, averaging 4.86 stars (Apple store, 11-06), +7 over the last 321 days. Belarus News ranks #4, Armenia #5, both picked up from Russian speakers.

To be clear about its scale: it is the **category chart champion, not a site-wide hit** , and it never made the overall chart. The Russia News free chart has a low bar: 11-06 is #2 with X at #4 and Reddit at #1, and a few dozen new ratings a day is enough to hold a top spot. Real downloads aren't public; based on rating counts, it is roughly a few thousand downloads a day (estimate).

### Why iPhone, and why now

**The demand was already trained.** The Telegram channel "Радар по всей России | БПЛА" (@radarrussiia) has been running since 2023, about 1.52M subscribers (tgstat, November). The official sighting-report tool from the People's Front, Радар.НФ, has 1M+ downloads on RuStore. On Google Play this year alone several more have appeared: "Тревога" with 60k+ installs, and "Радар БПЛА – Карта Тревог" (from Radio Tuner), which launched the same day with a nearly identical name and has 42k installs, up 17k in the last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06).

**But the iPhone is empty.** Searching the Russian App Store for БПЛА, беспилот, ПВО, тревог, there is basically only one native Russian equivalent. The rest are an air-defense simulation game, a few Ukrainian alert maps made for Ukrainians, and "МЧС России" and the Moscow region's "112 МО", which only push official alerts. The likely reason is not hard to guess: it has become harder for Russian developers to publish on the App Store, requiring foreign cards and foreign accounts, and Russian apps have been removed in waves.

**Then the attacks came.** It launched 10-22, and that night the air defense ministry said it shot down 808 drones, a record (aif.ru). A week later came another night with 1,214. Kommersant reported that October's shoot-down count set a historic high.

So the same product looks completely different on the two platforms: on iOS it ranks #1; on Google Play it has only 5,849 installs, one-seventh of the same-named app. The product itself has no overwhelming edge. The advantage is where it stands.

### The developer did exactly the same thing three months earlier

The developer account is Kirill Konishchev, with 3 apps under his name. In July Russia had a fuel shortage, and he shipped an app called "ГдеБЕНЗ" ("Where's the gas") for finding gas stations, which now has 8,210 ratings in the Russian store. Meduza interviewed "one of the creators of ГдеБЕНЗ" in July 20, and he laid out nearly the whole playbook:

- **See a website take off with no app in the store, and move first.** He noticed several gas-finding websites were popular, one of whose Telegram channels said the site had 800k daily users, "but I checked Google Play and the App Store, and there was no app like this."

- **Use the hot search term as the name.** "Jun 29, this is the hottest search term for gasoline on Yandex and Google, and I figured it would be the same on the App Store and Google Play." That got him into a fight with the author of a same-named website, who filed complaints with the stores. His answer: once their trademark registers, I'll rename, "and maybe by then the problem will be gone."

- **Pick a category with less competition.** ГдеБЕНЗ went into Lifestyle, because "it's less competitive than Navigation."

- **Rely on organic traffic only.** "No article ever wrote about it; people searched by name." Within hours it had 11k downloads, in two days 40k, and within two weeks nearly 500k unique users, and at one point it reached the front page of the Russian App Store overall chart.

- **Be based abroad.** "Building software outside Russia is actually easier: the App Store works, I can use Claude Code, and I don't have to worry about my account getting banned over a VPN."

Карта БПЛА follows the same playbook: the name and subtitle are all search terms ("Карта БПЛА", "радар онлайн", "Беспилотная опасность сейчас"); it chose the low-barrier News category; the data is scraped, aggregated and filtered by reliability; and it uses the share-link trick ГдеБЕНЗ also used. On top of that there is a companion site, kartabpla.ru, with search-driven pages like "Today's attacks", "Airport restrictions", "What to do if you're in danger" and "Danger levels

We found no evidence it bought ads or worked with influencers, and no media coverage or discussion on X.

### Where the money comes from

Free, with in-app ads. The Google Play listing says "Contains ads"; 10-31 one five-star reviewer mentioned in passing that "the ads are a bit much"; 10-29 someone asked in a comment for a subscription to remove ads. The website also has a CloudTips tipping button. It does not appear on the grossing charts, and revenue is not public.

This kind of app's money follows the attacks: lots of people open it on nights with many attacks and forget about it on quiet days. Judging by ads, a category-chart leader probably makes small money (inference).

### What users are complaining about

In early November the good reviews were mostly "thanks to the developer, I've been looking for something like this for a long time." The bad reviews focused on two things:

- Push notifications. "Everything is fine, but the notifications are a problem, they come and go" (11-03, five stars); another four-star review asked for iPhone's "Critical Alerts" (emergency notifications that sound even on silent).

- Accuracy. "When there's no danger it says there is, and when officials announce something it cites one or two sources. Please make the map more accurate" (11-01, three stars).

These two issues are the whole story for this kind of product: inaccurate pushes and no retention. Critical Alerts requires separate approval from Apple, which a non-official alert app will struggle to get (inference).

### Who's following

Copycats have already started. In Nov 5, a iOS app called "Радар БПЛА – Карта Тревог" by Nail Sibgatov showed up. Same name pattern as the Radio Tuner app on Google Play, same pitch: show alert status by your home address plus a radius. It had 11-06 ratings, or was it 0? Android is even more crowded: on RuStore, the top one, "Радар Дронов БПЛА", has 200k+ downloads, Детектор АЭРО has 100k+, and there are plenty of web-only map pages.

### If it were you

**My verdict:** don't copy this one. What's worth learning is the playbook behind it: when a crisis makes a need explode on the web or Telegram while the app store is still empty, ship first, use the hot search term as the name, and pick a low-barrier category.

**Who it suits:** 1–2 people who can go from scraping data to a live app in a few days; people in a place where they can use the App Store and Google Play normally but who understand the language and realities of another market where publishing is hard (Russian, Persian-speaking, sanctioned or delisted markets are typical); people who watch that market's trending searches and Telegram daily and can act in the week an event happens.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone who wants to copy a Russian drone-map app. The iOS gap is already taken, copycats are already in, demand rises and falls with the war, and accuracy is a matter of personal safety: one bad push means a one-star review, and you may run into Russian laws on air-defense information and Apple's review of unofficial alerts. It's also not for anyone building a long-term subscription business, since daily active users of this kind of app follow events, so it can only rely on ads and tips.

**How to build it:** watch for three signals appearing at once: a sudden event (a fuel shortage, internet outage, power cut, airspace closure, a service being blocked), a website or channel that already has many users, and no native app for it in the app store. Then use AI coding tools to build a working version in a few days: aggregate public sources, label how reliable each message is, push by region, provide offline fallback if the network drops, and one-tap share links. Free plus ads plus tips.

**How to get users:** store search is everything. Copy the hottest search terms of the week into the app name and subtitle; pick a category where the top names in that market are things like X or Reddit, which "don't compete much"; add a search-driven website that funnels to the download page; and make share links open in the browser so people without the app can view them.

**When the window is:** these windows are measured in weeks. ГдеБЕНЗ went from launch to the top of the overall chart in days; Карта БПЛА had 14 days before copycats arrived. If you haven't shipped within a week of an event, you're basically late.

**What signals mean you've misread it:** ① an iOS copycat (like Nail Sibgatov's app) catches up on ratings within a month, showing that "being first" doesn't hold and an empty store slot is no advantage; ② attacks don't clearly drop, yet its daily new ratings fall to single digits by late November, showing that inaccurate pushes are already losing users and the product can't retain people; ③ Apple removes it, or starts requiring official credentials for alert apps, and the whole "unofficial alert" route closes on iOS.

Where users come from

- Inference **App Store search/ASO** : name and subtitle are all search terms (Карта БПЛА / радар онлайн / Беспилотная опасность сейчас); the same team said in its Meduza interview that ГдеБЕНЗ was named after a hot search term and relied only on organic traffic

- **Verified** **Exposure from category-chart leadership (chose the low-barrier News category)** : Russian News free chart #1 for 10 consecutive days; #2 on the same chart is X, #4 is Reddit, a low bar (appstore library)

- **Verified** **Crisis-driven demand** : 10-22 launched the night 808 drones were shot down, and 10-29 with 1,214, both records; 10-30 ratings +63 in a single day (aif.ru / ura.news / lenta.ru)

- **Verified** **Website SEO funnel** : kartabpla.ru has pages such as "Today's attacks / Airport restrictions / What to do in danger", all linking to the /prilozhenie download page

- Inference **Map link sharing** : the app can share a map link to chat apps in one tap; ГдеБЕНЗ spread across regions via sharing (Meduza)

## Карта БПЛА — радар онлайн (iOS id6823556212) research report

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our appstore / googleplay libraries (DuckDB on the agent-im server), Apple's lookup API, Jina search and page text. Regions checked: the library was scanned across all regions, with focus on ru, by and ua.

### One line

A real-time "drone / missile / aviation danger" map app for the Russian market: it aggregates alerts from governors, local governments, MChS, the Russian civil aviation authority and public Telegram channels onto one map and pushes "danger / all clear" by region. It launched 2026-10-22, on the day Russia faced its largest drone-attack wave ever, and since almost no one on iOS was doing this, it quickly reached #1 on the Russian News free chart.

### 1. Data

- Rating counts (all regions combined, appstore library daily_all_countries): 10-28 61 → 10-30 131 → 11-02 278 → 11-06 498. New ratings per day 40–80,11-06 is +80.

- Russia (app_day): the News free chart went from 10-28 to 11-06, holding **#1** for 10 consecutive days; ratings 54 → 437, +321 in the last 7 days. It never entered the overall chart (free_rank), which means the scale is "category-chart leader," not "site-wide hit."

- Belarus News #4–6, Armenia #5; other regions have almost no ratings, so it's a side benefit for Russian speakers.

- Apple lookup (11-06, ru): 456 ratings, average 4.86 stars; version 1.0.5 (released 10-30), 5 versions in two weeks.

- The bar is low: on the same day, #2 on the Russian News free chart was X and #4 was Reddit (appstore library v_chart 11-06), so reaching #1 doesn't require a large absolute volume.

- On Android it's much weaker: Google Play shows "5 тыс.+" installs, the googleplay library has 5,849 installs, +5,282 over the last 7 days (package ru.kartabpla.detector.aero, developer account FreedomKir, tagged "Has ads"); RuStore shows "3 тыс.+" with 105 ratings (RuStore page, 11-06).

- Monetization: free, with in-app ads (the Play page says "Есть реклама"; 10-31 left a 5-star review saying "реклама в нем тоже немного есть"; 10-29 users asked for an ad-free subscription). The website has a CloudTips tip jar. The grossing chart has no data, and revenue isn't public.

### 2. Competitors (who else does the same thing)

**The iOS Russian store is almost empty, and that's the most important finding.** Our app table covers nearly everything from 2026-11-06 onward. Searching it by name for БПЛА / беспилот / ПВО / тревог / радар in the ru store turns up only:

- this product;

- "ПВО Радар: военный симулятор" (a game, not a comparable);

- a Ukrainian-made Ukrainian alert map that shows up on the Russian chart: "Карта тривог – RadarUA" (SERHII KYRYLOV, listed 2026-07-21, News #8–12 on the Russian store, only 28 ratings there; on the Ukrainian store it's News #1 with 14,375 ratings, and 11-05 it added +412 in one day), єТривога, Повітряна Тривога Україна;

- official apps: "МЧС России" (1,664 ratings on the Russian store, News #8) and "112 МО" (Moscow Oblast government). They only send official push alerts, with no nationwide live danger map;

- **Copycats** : "Радар БПЛА – Карта Тревог" (Nail Sibgatov, id6827299251,2026-11-05, 0 ratings; the copy leads with "shows status by your home address + radius").

**Android, RuStore, the web, and Telegram were crowded long ago** (and these user bases are bigger):

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this product | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Радар по всей России | БПЛА" Telegram channel @radarrussiia | Telegram / MAX | 2023-08 | 1.52M subscribers (tgstat / telemetr, November) | It's a text feed, not a map. Kommersant and VK users have said these "radar" channels make money off fear and aren't reliable. |
| "Радар Дронов БПЛА" (com.mira.corp.radar), from the same team | RuStore | 2026 | 200k+ downloads, 10.2k ratings | The leader on Android / RuStore; not on iOS | |
| Радар.НФ (People's Front ONF) | RuStore / AppGallery | 2025 | RuStore 1M+ downloads | Official "sighting report" tool, Android only | |
| Детектор АЭРО(detector-aero.ru,org.skyscanner.mobile) | Web + RuStore | 2025–26 | RuStore 100k+ | Has a shelter map and "I saw it" sighting reports. This product's Android package also includes detector.aero; I couldn't find any link between the two. | |
| "Тревога" (Серёжа из Мариуполя) | Google Play | 2026-06-21 | 61,206 installs, +13,899/7 days | Similar apps on Play | |
| "Радар БПЛА – Карта Тревог" (Radio Tuner) | Google Play | 2026-10-22 (same day as this product) | 41,732 installs, +16,821/7 days | 7× bigger than this product on Play | |
| ЗНАЮ РАНЬШЕ | RuStore | 2026 autumn | 22 ratings | Also does "drones + airport restrictions" | |
| Web maps: radar-map.ru, bplaalert.ru, bplarussia.ru, alertmonitor.ru, zaschitnikiotechestva.ru/bplamap | Web | 2025–26 | Not verified | Only viewable in a browser, with no native push | |
| Regional news apps (Омск-информ etc.), МЧС России | iOS / Android | Already around | — | Cover a single region, or only send official push alerts | |

Bottom line: the demand isn't new. Android and Telegram have been a red ocean for a long time, and the **gap is only on iOS** . Russian developers struggle to publish on the App Store (it requires foreign cards and foreign accounts, and Russian apps keep getting pulled in batches), and this developer is based outside Russia.

### 3. Why it took off

1. **The timing is a platform event** : 10-22 listed; that same night Russian air defense claimed 808 drones downed, a record (aif.ru). 10-29 night, 1,214 downed, the "largest ever", 600 of them flying toward Moscow (ura.news, lenta.ru, gazeta.ru). Kommersant reported a record drone-kill count in October. The rating curve adds +63 in a single day 10-30 and 10-29 around then, the first peak around the launch.

2. **Grabbing iOS** : Telegram channels and Android apps have already educated millions on this need, but iPhone users searching the App Store for "БПЛА", "беспилотная опасность", or "воздушная тревога" find almost no native Russian apps besides this one (see the competitor table above). So it looks like a hit on iOS, while on Play it's only #3–4.

4. **Website + SEO traffic** : kartabpla.ru has pages that pull search traffic, such as "Атаки сегодня" (attacks today), "Аэропорты" (airport restrictions / Ковёр plan), "Что делать при опасности" (what to do in danger), and "Уровни опасности" (danger levels). Each page links to a /prilozhenie download page. Jina searches for "kartabpla" rank it near the top, and the Play link carries utm_medium=organic. I haven't verified how much traffic the site gets.

5. **Reasons people stay** : regional push for "danger / all clear," labeled signal reliability (official / two independent sources / single source), no sign-up, and a one-tap way to share the map link in chat apps (spread through sharing, like ГдеБЕНЗ). The 10-30 version adds "the built-in map still opens if the server is down or the internet is cut," responding to the reality in Russia where mobile networks get cut during drone alerts and only whitelisted services work (t-j.ru, 3dnews have covered the whitelists).

### 4. Differentiation

- Compared with Telegram channels: it has a map, lets you subscribe only to your own region, sends "all clear" notices, labels signal reliability, and has a calm interface (the description says it doesn't show shootdowns, air defense, or flight tracks). That avoids legal risk and separates it from channels that sell panic.

- Compared with Android peers: **the features are similar, and the real difference is that it's on iOS** .

- Compared with official МЧС / 112: national coverage and faster updates (it aggregates official and unofficial sources together).

- Are these differences why it took off? **The main reasons were "an empty iOS slot + grabbing search terms + hitting the attack peak." The product's own differences are a bonus.** Radio Tuner's version, launched on Play the same day with an almost identical name, has 7× the installs, which shows that on a crowded platform this product has no overwhelming edge.

### 5. Growth tactics (evidence)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| App Store search / ASO (name = search term, low-barrier News category) | The name and subtitle are all search terms; the same team's Meduza interview admits ГдеБЕНЗ was named and categorized this way | Method confirmed (based on the same team's own account); for this app it's an inference |
| Exposure from topping the category chart | Ranked #1 on the Russian News top free chart for 10 consecutive days (appstore library) | Confirmed |
| Website SEO traffic | kartabpla.ru SEO pages + the /prilozhenie download page | Confirmed this exists; traffic volume not verified |
| Sharing the map link | The app description says "поделиться картой одной ссылкой" (share the map with one link) | The feature exists; its effect is not verified |
| Breaking-event demand (large-scale attacks) | The record attacks in 10-22 and 10-29 line up with the rating curve | Timing confirmed to match |
| Paid ads / influencers / media | No media or X posts about it found (x-radar finds nothing over 30 days) | None found |

### 6. How many people know about it

- **Few people know about it yet.** No media coverage, nothing on X, and no public revenue. Insiders can recognize it only because the same team made ГдеБЕНЗ (covered by Meduza, though the developer's name wasn't printed).

- Copycats have already started: 11-05 on iOS there's a "Радар БПЛА – Карта Тревог" (Nail Sibgatov), with the same name as Radio Tuner's on Play.

### 7. What others can learn

- "Crisis event + demand already on web/Telegram + empty app store": ship first. Name it with search terms, pick a low-competition category, and use AI tools to get a prototype out in a few days.

- Platform barriers are the moat: local Russian devs struggle to publish on the App Store, so foreign devs have an opening. The same playbook works in any market where a platform is sanctioned or pulled.

- Free + ads + tips, monetized off DAU during the event. Retention comes from details tied to local reality, like "opens even with no internet."

### 8. What's still uncertain

- Actual downloads and DAU (inferred from rating counts, possibly thousands of downloads a day, unverified); how much ad revenue.

- What's the relationship between kartabpla and Детектор АЭРО (the bundle ID contains detector.aero)?

- Demand tracks attack intensity. How much drops after a ceasefire or fewer attacks? Will Apple treat it as an "unofficial alert" (the description includes a disclaimer)?

- Reviews complain that push alerts are inconsistent and not accurate enough, and some ask for Critical Alerts. Whether users stick depends on push reliability.
