"Borrow 1M, get 600": a loan app that says "for India" climbs the chart in Indonesia only, top 20
What it is: a cash-loan app listed only on the Indonesian App Store. The developer is an Indian licensed non-bank financial company, and the listing pretends it serves India.
Why it took off: it passed App Store review with a real Indian financial license plus compliant copy, got placed in the Business category that's easy to chart, and went by the name "Dana" (money), catching Indonesians rejected by licensed platforms who need cash fast. The same operators very likely ran several of these at once.
EHow you could follow it Don't. The only parts you can take away legitimately: charting in small countries' small categories is very easy, and naming your app after the term locals search for can capture store search traffic.

In Oct 28, a company registered in Kolkata, India, listed "Dana Cerdas - Instant Cash" on the App Store. The store listing says it lends to Indians, with terms of 91 to 365 days and APR up to 18.25%. But it's sold only in the Indonesian store, the reviews are all in Indonesian, and within 9 days its rating climbed from 0 to 486 and it reached #17 on the Indonesia Business free chart. This isn't a product that succeeded; it's a way of getting past review that worked again. Below: how it grew, where the money comes from, and why you shouldn't take this path.
A review that says "run"
On Nov 2, an Indonesian user gave it 1 star with the title "hati hati ini ilegal" (be careful, this is illegal):
ILEGAL!! Deadline cuma 5 hari terus minjem 1juta cair 600 ciri ciri ilegal. Run guys! — Illegal!! Only 5 days to repay, borrow 1M and get 600, classic illegal platform. Run.
The next day someone left a comment: "TOLONG DI HAPUS DATA SAYA" (please delete my data).
Most of the other reviews have a different tone: "Semoga cair butuh bangt" (hoping it disburses, I really need it), "Dpet limit 1jt semoga cair lagi butuh" (got a 1M limit, hoping it disburses, urgent), "Acc tolong urgent" (please approve, urgent). Most of these gave 5 stars before the money had arrived.
Put these two kinds of reviews side by side and you can see what it's doing: catching people desperate for a loan and running the old playbook of Indonesia's unlicensed online lenders (locally called pinjol ilegal): take 40% off as a fee up front, with repayment due in 5 days.
The listing doesn't match reality
Apple has several hard rules for personal loan apps: the annual interest rate must be stated and capped at 36%; repayment can't be required within 60 days; and it must be submitted by a licensed financial institution under its own entity. Dana Cerdas's listing is written to match these rules:
- The developer, HARVARD TRADING PRIVATE LIMITED, was registered in Kolkata 1993 years ago and is on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) non-bank financial company (NBFC) list with status "registered" (list as of 2026-09-30). This developer account has only this one app.
- The listing says "for individuals in India", "lending by a compliant NBFC", "91–365 days", "APR up to 18.25%", "no collateral needed".
- The loan amount is listed as "₹100,000 – ₹8,700,000". An unsecured personal loan of 870K rupees makes no sense in India; in Indonesian rupiah, Rp 8.7M, it fits.
But it can't be found in the India store, nor in the US, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, or Nigeria; it's downloadable only in the Indonesian store (Apple lookup API, 11-06). The company website harvard-trading.com has the page title "Dana Cerdas", with just a few images, a +91 phone number, and a Kolkata address. Whether the company is genuinely involved, or its entity is being rented or impersonated, can't be seen from outside; unverified.
How fast it took off
| Date | Indonesia Business free chart | Cumulative ratings | Added that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-30 | 82 | 0 | — |
| 11-01 | 24 | 67 | 65 |
| 11-03 | 20 | 151 | 43 |
| 11-04 | 19 | 252 | 101 |
| 11-06 | 17 | 459 | 118 |
(App Store Indonesia; the rating had reached 486 by 11-06 later, with an average of 4.75.)
An average of 4.75, yet the reviews are half waiting for a disbursement and half cursing. A likely explanation is that the rating prompt popped up while users were submitting applications and still waiting for approval (inference, unverified).
It has never entered the Indonesia overall chart, nor Top Grossing. That's not surprising: its money comes from loan-sharking fees and interest, not Apple in-app purchases, so it would never show on Top Grossing.
Why Business instead of Finance
Because the Business category is easy to chart. As of Nov 6, the spots around #17 on the Indonesia Business free chart were occupied by scanner and PDF tools, and about a hundred new ratings a day keeps you in the top 20.
Finance is different: it's topped by GoPay, DANA, and the banks, plus dozens of lending platforms licensed by Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK). Kredivo is #10, Easycash #13, Indodana #16, AdaKami #19 (Indonesia Finance free chart, 11-06). At Dana Cerdas's volume, it wouldn't break into the top 60 there. Putting it in Business avoids a head-on fight with licensed platforms and sidesteps Apple's stricter review of loan apps in Finance (the latter point is inference).
Where users come from
Mostly it's searching "dana" on the App Store ("dana" is Indonesian for "money, funds"). In Nov 6, searching this word in the Indonesia store, Dana Cerdas ranked #12. The name is a word users actually search for, so store search brings traffic directly.
Who it's catching is clear: people who can't borrow from licensed platforms. Licensed platforms run credit checks, offer low limits, and approve slowly; people turned down by them browse the store, see a "Dana" ranked near the top with 4.7 stars, and download.
It has no social media presence: searching "Dana Cerdas" on TikTok turns up only a same-named personal finance education account, there hasn't been a single post on X in nearly 30 days, and there's no press coverage. Whether it ran Apple Search Ads or other paid ads can't be determined. 2023 years ago, an identical playbook appeared in India; someone documented that those apps charted to Business #9 through App Store ad spend. This time there's no direct evidence; unverified.
It's not one app, it's a batch
At the same time, the Indonesia Business chart had several nearly identical packages:
| App | Developer | Launched | Rating (11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dana Kilat & Kredit Cash App | SAHAL BUSINESS PRIVATE LIMITED | 10-28 | 270 |
| Dana Now - Easy Dana Kredit | KANKAI INVESTMENTS AND HOLDINGS PRIVATE LIMITED | 10-28 | 251 |
| Me Dana - Kredit Fast Online | PRAXIS SUPPLIERS (P) LTD | 10-25 | 131 |
| Cair Cepat-Dana Pintar Online | GOODSARVE TREXIM PRIVATE LIMITED | 11-04 | 0 (listed under Finance) |
All are Indian Private Limited companies, each with one app, and the listings all follow the same formula — "rupee limit + starting 91 days + APR 18–25% + India NBFC" — and all three launched on the same day. It doesn't look like others copied after seeing it take off; it looks like the same operators ran several packages at once, so losing any one doesn't affect the whole (inference). Dana Cerdas was the fastest-growing of the batch.
There's another route doing the same business: developers use a personal name and disguise the app as something else, then switch it to a loan interface after listing. For example, "Dana Cerah - Field Yield Gain" sounds like a farming tool, but its reviews say "borrow 500, repay 900, term 6–8 days", "threatening to send my contacts out", and "I never applied, the money just arrived."
This playbook isn't new either. In the illegal online lending list published by OJK and the Indonesian anti-illegal-finance task force (Satgas PASTI) in April 2026, 43 entries had developers that were Indian Private Limited companies, 39 of which were iPhone versions with names like Dana Me, Kilat Cash, Rupiah Kilat, Cepat Cash, and "Dana Now" is also on the list. In the first 9 months of 2026, this task force shut down 1,199 illegal lending entities (CNBC Indonesia, 10-27).
Where the money comes from
From its own reviews and similar apps, you can piece together the model: loan-sharking (borrow 1M and receive about 600), terms of 5–7 days, high rollover fees if you can't repay on time, and collection threats to contact everyone in your phone book. Costs go mainly to two things: obtaining a licensed entity that can pass Apple review, plus possible search ad spend. One package can live for weeks to months, and once reported and removed, they swap in a new entity and launch the next (inference).
If it were you
E Stay away. Its growth came not from the product but from a borrowed financial license, a fake listing written to match review rules, and a lending method that Indonesian law explicitly bans. This is regulatory arbitrage plus illegal lending, not a product opportunity.
Who it's for: nobody. The barrier to this business is a willing NBFC entity and an offline collections operation, plus being unafraid of being called out by regulators in two countries. Ordinary indie devs and small teams should steer clear, too.
Who it's not for: everyone, especially anyone thinking of building a "Southeast Asian fintech app." Doing Indonesian lending for real means obtaining an OJK license and competing head-on with platforms like Kredivo and AdaKami, which have been listed for years. That's a different, capital-intensive business.
How to do it: Don't copy it. The only observations you can take without breaking any rules are two. First, charting in small-country subcategories (say, Business in Indonesia) is very cheap: around a hundred new ratings a day can put you in the top 20. A compliant product launching cold can pick a category like that, where competition is weak and the target users actually browse. Second, name the app with the words locals really search for, and store search will send you organic traffic.
How to get users: Same as above. Store search plus small-subcategory charts. Don't copy its rating tactic. Popping a rating prompt while users wait for approval earns 4.75 stars and a screen full of "run" reviews, and Apple will clean that up eventually.
What window was there to get in early: None. Packages like this usually get pulled within weeks to months, and OJK publishes its blacklist every few months.
Where I got it wrong: ① As of 2027 early, this batch (Dana Cerdas, Dana Kilat, Dana Now, Me Dana) was still live and still charting. That suggests Apple largely doesn't police "offshore entity lending across storefronts," and the iOS gap in Indonesia is bigger than I assumed. You still shouldn't do it. ② I confirmed that Harvard Trading holds a compliant license in Indonesia and that its actual lending terms match its listing. In that case it's a normal lending app, and this write-up's conclusion needs rewriting.

- Confirmed Pushing into the Business subcategory: about 100 ratings a day keeps it steady in the top 20 of Business. Nearby ranks are scanner and PDF tools (library: appstore).
- Confirmed Passing review using an NBFC entity: the developer is an RBI-registered NBFC (ICC class, a Kolkata company from 1993). The official website looks like a shell. Whether the entity is "rented" is inferred.
- Inferred Apple search ads: In 2023, someone in India documented the same playbook "buying App Store ads to reach #9 in Business." There is no direct evidence for this one.
- Inferred Incentivized ratings / fake reviews: the average of 4.75 doesn't match the negative review content. The comparable app Dana Safe has many machine-translated Chinese five-star reviews, and its rating count dropped by 42 in one day from 11-06.
- Inferred TikTok / X / media: Neither TikHub nor x-radar returned anything relevant.
Dana Cerdas - Instant Cash (iOS id6824831988): why it took off
Conclusion: This isn't a product that succeeded. It's a review-passing playbook that worked again. Indonesian unlicensed cash lending teams (pinjol ilegal) used a small RBI-registered NBFC entity in Kolkata, India, to open an Apple developer account. They submitted the listing with a compliant-looking template reading "for Indian individuals, 91–365 days, APR ≤ 18.25%" to get through Apple's lending-category review. After launch it sells only in the Indonesia store and climbs the Business category, which has very weak competition. Users come because they can't borrow from OJK-licensed platforms and need money fast. They stay because of the loan itself (you have to repay it), not because of the product experience. Around the same date (2026-10-28), 3–4 more apps with the same template launched, most likely a batch of shell apps from the same group.
Storefronts checked: in our library it charts only in id (Indonesia). Apple lookup returns nothing in in / us / ph / th / vn / my / mx / ng (2026-11-06). In other words, it is only listed in Indonesia.

| What it actually does | Sold only in the Indonesia store. Reviews are all in Indonesian. "₹8,700,000" in India would be an unsecured personal loan of 870k rupees, which is absurd. Converted to Indonesian rupiah, Rp 8.7M matches. | See below |
Where the listing and the reality don't match (traces of the review template):
- Apple's review guidelines require personal loan apps to disclose the APR (no more than 36%), not require full repayment within 60 days, and be submitted by a licensed financial institution under its own entity. The description "91–365 days, APR 18.25%, RBI-regulated NBFC" maps directly onto those requirements.
- User review (2026-11-02, id store, 1 stars): "ILEGAL!! The term is only 5 days, I borrowed 1M and got 600 ... a typical illegal platform. Run." The payout is only 60% of the loan, due in 5 days, which is standard practice for Indonesia's unlicensed cash lenders.
- Other reviews (2026-11-03,1 stars): "Warning, please delete my data"; (2026-11-01,5 stars) "Gave me a 1M limit, hoping it disburses, I need the money urgently."
2. Data: how fast it grew
Library: appstore, id store, Business Top Free chart:
| Date | Business Top Free rank | Total ratings | New today |

- As of 2026-11-06, lookup shows 486 ratings with an average of 4.75. But of the 11 reviews the library captured, 2 are 1-star "illegal / delete my data" reviews, and most of the rest are 5-star reviews from people still waiting for approval ("hoping it disburses"). A high average alongside negative review content suggests the rating prompt was shown while users were still waiting for approval and hoping (unverified).
- It has never charted in Indonesia's overall chart or any top-grossing chart. That's expected: it earns from lending, interest, and fees, not in-app purchases, so it never appears on grossing charts.
- The Business category's bar is low. On the same day, the Indonesia Business Top Free chart's #17 spot was held by scanner and PDF tools, and around a hundred ratings a day was enough to reach the top 20. Put it in Finance instead, and it would face GoPay, DANA, the banks, and dozens of OJK-licensed lenders (Kredivo, AdaKami, Easycash, ...). At that scale it could not break into the top 60.
3. Competitors
3.1 apps with the same template, launched at the same time (very likely the same group)
All are in the id store's Business category. Developers are all Indian "Private Limited" entities, and all descriptions follow the same formula: "₹ limit + 91–180 days + APR 18–25% + Indian NBFC":
| App | Developer | Launched | 2026-11-06 rating count / current category rank |

| Cair Cepat-Dana Pintar Online (6824764146) | GOODSARVE TREXIM PRIVATE LIMITED | 2026-11-04 | 0 / Finance 115 |
Source: library appstore, app_day / app_profile, iTunes lookup 2026-11-06. The three apps launched on the same day with nearly identical description phrasing and number formats. Each developer account has only one app, and none of them has any buzz on TikTok or X. This looks like one team launching several apps at once to spread the risk of takedowns, not copycats following a hit. Dana Cerdas is the fastest-growing of the batch.
3.2 reskinned variants disguised as other apps
- Dana Cerah - Field Yield Gain (6760631964, developer is an individual, Mriganav Patel, launched 2026-03, 41,187 Business ratings): the name poses as an agriculture tool, and reviews read "borrowed 500, repay 900, term 6–8 days, threatens to leak my contacts" and "never applied, the money just landed in my account."
- Dana Safe - Tutor Earnings (6761991461, Partik Kothari, launched 2026-04): reviews include a large batch of obviously machine-translated fake praise from Chinese (for example "I spend more time on it than WeChat," "the loyal fans will come"), mixed with real victims writing "borrowed 1M, got 600, term 6 days." 2026-11-06 Its rating count dropped by 42 in one day (from 104 to 62), possibly Apple clearing out a batch of fake ratings (inferred).
- This branch of the playbook uses a personal developer name and a description disguised as something else, then remotely switches the app to a lending interface after launch. The Dana Cerdas branch gets through review head-on using a real NBFC entity. Both branches run the same business.
3.3 The same playbook in the past
- OJK / Satgas PASTI's illegal online lending blacklist, published April 2026, lists 43 entries with Indian "Private Limited" developers, 39 of them iPhone versions (links point to softonic's /iphone pages). Examples include Dana Me (MINDEX FINCAP PRIVATE LIMITED), Dana Now-Dana Credit Online (Prime Caplease Private Limited), Kilat Cash (Calcutta Multimax Private Limited), Rupiah Kilat (Ruchika Growth Fund Private Limited), and Cepat Cash (Girinandini Mercantile Private Limited). The naming pattern "Dana/Tunai/Kilat/Cepat + suffix" is identical to this batch, and the name Dana Now has been used before. Source: OJK list PDF (retrieved via Exa): ojk.go.id/.../Daftar Pinjaman Online Ilegal dan Investasi Ilegal April 2026.pdf
- India saw the same pattern in 2023: it borrowed the identity of a Kerala NBFC, ran App Store ads to reach #9 in Business. In 2023, Apple removed about 60 fraudulent lending apps at the end of July. Sources: a LinkedIn post by pooniawalla and Fintech Inside #78 (2023-09-11).
- Scale: From Jan 1 to Sep 30 of 2026, Satgas PASTI shut down 1,199 illegal online lending entities (CNBC Indonesia 2026-10-27).
3.4 Legal alternatives (licensed platforms doing the same thing)
Indonesia Finance Top Free top 60 (2026-11-06): OJK-licensed lenders (pindar) include Kredivo (10), Easycash (13), Indodana (16), AdaKami (19), Kredit Pintar (23), Danaku (24), Adapundi (25), JULO (49) and others, most already listed for 2–7 years. They run credit checks, offer low limits and approve strictly. The people they turn away are the customer base for apps like Dana Cerdas.
4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| App Store search (keyword "dana") | 2026-11-06 In the id store, searching "dana" put Dana Cerdas at #12, with same-batch Me Dana #18, Dana Kilat #20 and Dana Now #40. Other keywords were rate-limited by Apple's API and couldn't be checked. | Partly confirmed |
| Put it in the Business subcategory and push for the charts | Business has a low bar. Ranking #17 gets it seen by people who urgently need cash, in both the charts and search. | Confirmed (chart data) |
| Pass review with a rented NBFC entity | The developer is a real RBI-registered NBFC (ICC class), and the website is only a shell. OJK's historical lists include a long run of similar entities. | Confirmed (the entity); "rented" is an inference. |
| Apple Search Ads (ASA) | In 2023, a similar scheme in India was documented as "ads on the App Store pushing it to #9 in Business." No direct evidence for this one. | Unconfirmed |
| Android / loan-aggregator referrals, SMS, WhatsApp acquisition | Common practice for illegal lending apps. No evidence found this time. | Unconfirmed |
| TikTok / X / media | A TikHub search for "Dana Cerdas" returned only a same-named financial-education account and unrelated videos. x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days. | Confirmed none |
| Rating | The average score of 4.75 doesn't match the review content. The comparable package Dana Safe has been heavily padded with machine-translated five-star reviews. | Unconfirmed (inferred) |
Where the money comes from: upfront fee deduction (borrow 1M, about 600 received), 5–7 day terms, high rollover fees, plus aggressive collections that threaten to leak contact-list data. All of this comes from comparable apps and their own reviews. Acquisition cost is mainly the developer entity and review, possibly ASA; one package may last weeks to months, and after a takedown report a new package goes up under a new entity.
5. Why it took off
- Getting through review with a "legitimate entity": Apple requires lending apps to be submitted by licensed institutions. The team used a real RBI-registered NBFC entity plus compliance copy, passing review head-on, while the listing and the actual region, terms and rates are two different things.
- Indonesia store only, placed in Business: this avoids Apple's close scrutiny of Finance lending and avoids head-to-head competition with licensed pindar apps. About 100 ratings a day keeps it steady in the top 20 of Business.
- Demand is already there: Indonesian users turned away by licensed platforms and in urgent need of cash search "dana / pinjol" on the App Store, and download whichever high-ranking app shows a 4.7 rating. A review reads: "Semoga cair butuh bangt" (hoping it disburses, really need it).
- iOS is an open field: on Android, illegal lending apps are constantly cleaned up by OJK and Google, and iOS users are seen as the "better" audience. Apple's review mainly checks entity credentials and copy, and can't see the real disbursement terms after listing.
- Many packages at once: 3 template packages were listed on the same day, so losing any single one doesn't hurt the whole.
6. Differentiation
There's no product differentiation. Interface, copy and limits are all templates. Compared with the same batch, it ran furthest ahead, possibly just because the name "Cerdas (smart)" is good or because it got more budget (unverified). The real "difference" is in distribution: an Indian NBFC entity that passes Apple review + the Business category + Indonesia store only. That is why it could scale, but it isn't unique to Dana Cerdas; the same batch of packages used the same approach.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: no press coverage, 0 posts on X, nothing relevant on TikTok. Searching "Dana Cerdas pinjol" turned up only one 2021-year-old complaint on mediakonsumen about a same-named illegal lender (the name has been used more than once). By the measure of "few people know about it," that holds, but the approach has long shown up in batches on OJK's lists.
- Copycats: in the same period there were Dana Kilat, Dana Now, Me Dana and Cair Cepat. It looks more like one team spreading multiple packages than like imitators.
8. What's worth borrowing (only the parts that transfer legitimately)
- In small countries, subcategories (like Indonesia's Business) have a very low bar to chart. A hundred-odd downloads a day can get you into the top 20. For a legitimate product's cold start, pick a subcategory with weak competition that the target users still browse.
- Keyword naming: name the product with the words locals actually search (Dana, Kredit, Cash), so store search brings organic traffic.
- The lesson in reverse: Apple reviews "entity + copy" and can't see the actual business flow. Packages like this don't last long. OJK publishes lists every month, and Apple cleans up ratings and takes listings down. This is regulatory arbitrage, not a product opportunity, and we don't recommend following it.
9. What's uncertain
- Whether Harvard Trading itself is a participant, or the entity was rented or impersonated: unverified.
- Whether it ran ASA, Meta or TikTok ads: our ad library doesn't track it, and nothing was found.
- Actual disbursement terms: only 1 user reviews describe 5 days and 60% received. The sample is very small.
- How long it lasts: the database doesn't yet have a complete lifecycle for comparable packages being taken down (the database starts from 2026-10-28).
- Whether the 4.75 average came from incentivized ratings or padding: inference, unverified.
