# Turn a folding iPhone into "a real MacBook": a Singapore creator who makes hits used a $5.99 remote desktop app to catch the iPhone Duo launch window

**What it is** A $5.99 one-time-purchase iPhone remote desktop app. Fold the iPhone Duo halfway: the top screen shows your own Mac, the bottom has a keyboard and trackpad, wrapped in a retro shell.

**Why it took off** The iPhone Duo had just launched, and new owners were hunting for things only this phone could do. The developer is himself a creator of viral content: on launch day he posted a "this is real macOS" video, and a week later a lifestyle creator with 410k followers filmed it. Charted storefronts went from 8 to 43.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another pocket Mac on the Duo. Learn the playbook for the next new hardware: for two weeks around launch, repackage an old feature as a "transform" gimmick, make the "actually usable" version of a toy-style hit, preview it with self-made contrast videos, then bring in creators with a cute aesthetic to film it.

C grade: the playbook is worth learning, but this slot already has the original, free copycats, and a dozen remote desktop apps. The technology has zero barrier, the Duo launch window closes within two weeks, and the install base is small. What it can't copy is the developer's own ability to make viral videos. Pocket Mac Lab's product is, technically, remote desktop: the iPhone connects to your home Mac and streams its screen. The pitch is different: fold an iPhone Duo in half, the top screen shows your own Mac, the bottom is a keyboard and trackpad, and a retro shell makes it look like a palm-sized MacBook. Launched Nov 1, one-time purchase at $5.99, and five days later it hit the Top Paid charts in 43 countries and regions. It took off because of timing and one video, not the tech. Below: how it blew up, who's competing, and whether you can still jump in.

### One video on launch day

On Oct 23, 2026, Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale at $1,999 and sold out within minutes of pre-orders (CBS, MacRumors). That same day, Singapore creator Declann Drostan Tan (TikTok @__diditee__, 44K followers) posted a video that opened with:

> I turned my iPhone Duo into a FULLY FUNCTIONING MACBOOK! … Yes it's not just a gimmick, that's ACTUALLY MACOS!

It ended with "Coming to the App Store REALLY SOON". By November 6 the video had 166k views, 7,572 likes and 1,767 shares (TikTok, 11-06). The most-liked comments were half curiosity, half doubt: "Is it mirroring your MacBook?" (1.5k likes), "It looks so laggy" (2.7k likes). The more people argued, the more the video spread.

He is not a programmer-turned-indie-developer. His bio reads "Teaching the art of viral hooks!" He had brand deals with Artlist and Insta360 before, with his top video at 1.95M views. This is the only app he has. The support and privacy pages were generated with ChatGPT. In short: **the person who pulled this off is best at openings, not code** .

The video went out, but he didn't rush the launch. He let people wait a week first. On Nov 1 he posted to Instagram: "POCKET MAC LAB IS FINALLY OUT!" saying "a lot of you dm'ed me", priced at "the price of a coffee, no subscription". The original video's caption was also changed to "link in my bio".

### What it is

- Pocket Mac Lab on the iPhone ($5.99, no in-app purchases, no subscription). Pocket Mac Connector on the Mac, free, built on macOS's built-in Screen Sharing.

- Folded for use: the top screen shows the Mac, the bottom is a themed keyboard and trackpad, with tap, drag, two-finger scroll, and you can hear the Mac's sound.

- 7 original shells (Studio, Daybreak, Circuit, etc.). When the Duo is closed, the outer screen shows a matching "pear" cover, made for filming.

- You can connect away from home, but the Mac must be on, online, and running the Connector.

The first line of the store page is "Your Mac. A whole new way to carry it." It never uses tool words like "VNC" or "remote desktop".

### Why now: someone already built the appetite

On the Duo's launch day, another app had already gone viral: Tiny Computers ($3.99, Fountain Interactive), which turns the Duo into 10 retro mini computers. They boot and respond to taps, but they're just models and don't connect to a real computer. By 11-06 it had charted in 79 countries and regions, ranking #8 on the US overall paid chart, with 55 ratings in the US store (App Store, 11-06). A TikTok by @janellesdesk got 260k views and 30k likes. Lifehacker and CNET both covered it, and on Reddit someone called it "the first killer app for the Duo".

New owners who just spent $2,000 most want "things only this phone can do" to show others. Tiny Computers proved the "Duo as a tiny computer" image charms people, and it left behind a question that kept coming up in comments: could it become my actual Mac? Pocket Mac Lab is the answer to that question.

### Where users came from: the developer was the first creator, then others followed

| Date | Who | What was posted | Data (TikTok, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-23 | @__diditee__ (the developer, 44k followers) | "This is real macOS", ending "coming very soon" | 166k views, 7,572 likes |
| 10-24 to 10-29 | Repost accounts, Vietnamese tech accounts, duets | Relayed "Pocket Mac Lab is coming soon" | A few hundred to a few thousand views |
| 11-04 | @papernroses (Chantal, 410k followers, lifestyle creator) | "turning my iPhone Duo into a baby Mac - but for real this time … App by @__diditee__ called Pocket Mac Lab", cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook | 516k views, 52k likes |
| 11-05 | @taylybb (a photographer with under 1,000 followers) | "Now I only edit client photos on my little MacBook… but look how cute it is!!!" | 76k views, 2,395 likes |

The key one is Chantal's post, 11-04. Her title, "but for real this time," refers to Tiny Computers: last time it was toys, this time it's real. The comments are full of "so cute" and "ridiculously adorable." After she posted, the countries and regions where Pocket Mac Lab charted went from 11-03 to 11-04 in 8 ("28" store), 11-05 in 37, and 11-06 in 43 (App Store charts by store). Her video doesn't carry #ad, so whether it was organic or sponsored can't be confirmed.

No sign of paid advertising was found. The whole cold start relied on the developer's own account and his ability to make videos.

### How much has it actually sold?

Not much, and be careful reading the charts.

| Date | Charted storefronts | Best overall paid chart rank | Global ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-03 | 8 | 8 | 0 |
| 11-04 | 28 | 10 | 1 |
| 11-05 | 37 | 9 | 1 |
| 11-06 | 43 | 7 | 5 |

The #7 in 11-06 was on Kuwait's overall paid chart. The UAE, Thailand, Colombia and Uruguay ranked #1 on the Productivity paid chart. The US ranked #64 overall and #4 on Productivity paid (App Store, 11-06). Most of the storefronts that reached the top have very low paid-chart thresholds. Worldwide there are only 5 ratings. One UK five-star review reads "Connects and works great … mirrors excellent my Mac Studio". Based on #64 on the US chart, that's an estimated few hundred downloads a day, at $5.99 each, minus Apple's cut. It's a small, fast business, not a money tree.

The ceiling is also clear: the Duo is sold out, many buyers face waits of up to 2027 years, and few people can use this app at all.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Status | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny Computers | Listed in 10-23, charted in $3.99,79 storefronts | The same "little computer" image, but a toy that can't connect to a real Mac |
| DuoBook: Pocket Mac | Listed in 11-02, free, updated to 1.1 in 11-05 | A copycat that used the name "Pocket Mac" directly. The outer screen can be customized (colors, initials, photos, a glowing logo). 1.1 also added a "Touch Bar": a row of buttons at the top that changes with the app you're using on the Mac. |
| Headroom: Remote Desktop | Listed in July. Digital Trends reported on 10-23 "turn the Duo into a pocket Mac". | Earlier and more professional. Nothing to install on the Mac side, but it's heavy on tools, has no shell, didn't gain traction on TikTok, and has only 4 ratings in the US store. |
| DualMac, Farroom, Pane, Pocket VNC and a dozen others | Mac remote desktop apps launched since September, many with Duo split-screen support. | None of them took off. |
| Yosei | TestFlight free testing | For developers: Tailscale, two-way audio, Apple Pencil, letting AI operate the screen |
| Chrome Remote Desktop, Jump Desktop, Screens | Veteran, lots of users | Full-featured, but not designed for the Duo's folding form factor or looks; the developer said they built it because Chrome Remote Desktop had the "wrong form, keeps dropping" |

In one line: technically it's no different from the rest of this pack. Headroom even came out three months earlier and got press first. It wins on the name, the shell, and that video. And this kind of difference is the easiest to copy: DuoBook added a free version the next day and was already slightly ahead on features three days later.

### Why users are willing to pay

- **The price is an impulse price.** Someone who just spent $2,000 on a phone doesn't think twice about a $5.99 one-time purchase. The developer stresses "no subscription" in every video.

- **"This is really my Mac."** This is the only real difference from Tiny Computers, and the question people most want answered in the comments.

- **Cute, and filmable.** The shell and the outer-screen cover aren't features, they're props for filming. Many buyers aren't buying it to get work done on a phone, they're buying it to film "my little MacBook."

The risks are also in the comments: "looks laggy," "keys are too small." Remote desktop requires good network on both ends and a Mac that stays awake. Once the novelty fades, refunds and bad reviews could follow (inference, no data yet).

### If it were you

**One judgment call:** don't build another "pocket Mac" on the Duo. This slot already has an original, a free copycat, and a dozen remote desktop apps. What's worth learning is its playbook, to be reused on the next new hardware.

**Who it suits:** people who can make short videos, have an account with tens of thousands of followers, or can team up with someone like that; people who can repackage an old feature into something new and ship it within a week or two.

**Who it doesn't suit:** pure developers who can't film and can't find anyone who can. Anyone can write this app's code; the developer's own video is the part nobody can take. Also people aiming for a long-term subscription business.

**How to do it:** in the two weeks around a new hardware launch, owners most want to find "things only this device can do." Take an existing old feature (remote desktop, emulator, camera, remote control) and package it as a "transformation" for the new form factor: the Duo becomes a MacBook; next time it could be a watch, glasses, or tablet in a new form. When you see a toy-like hit (Tiny Computers), build the "actually usable" version. The first screen has to be filmable: a contrast ("this is real") and a cute look. Price as a one-time purchase of $4 to $6. If you insist on staying on the Duo, do what it didn't do well: a version for Windows PCs, smoother visuals, and a dedicated keyboard for specific audiences (photo editing, coding).

**How to get users:** film it yourself, post a "this is real" contrast video on launch day with "coming soon" at the end, collect DMs for a week, then release. After launch, recruit lifestyle creators with a "cute desk" aesthetic to make follow-up videos, not tech reviewers.

**When to move:** from the day new hardware goes on sale to two weeks after. For the Duo, this window will basically close by mid-to-late November.

**What would mean you read it wrong:** Apple adds an official "control your Mac from iPhone" in a system update; your video goes out and nobody in the comments asks "is this real?"; or the paid-chart ranking stays on category charts in small storefronts and never breaks into large ones like the US or UK.

Data as of 2026-11-06. Pocket Mac Lab's revenue and downloads are not public; sales are estimated from chart positions.

## Why Pocket Mac Lab (iOS id6826478625) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our appstore database (app_day / app_profile, 2026-11-03 to 11-06), iTunes lookup, TikHub (TikTok search, creator profiles, comments), Jina search and page reads. Our X corpus (x-radar) over the past 30 days returned 0 posts each for "Pocket Mac Lab" and "iPhone Duo Mac."

### One line

Pocket Mac Lab is a remote desktop app made by Singapore video creator Declann Drostan Tan (TikTok @__diditee__, 44k followers, whose bio says "teaching you how to write viral hooks"), timed to the iPhone Duo launch window. It sells for $5.99 as a one-time purchase. It repackages "remote into your own Mac from a Duo" as "fold the Duo into a small MacBook": the top half shows the Mac screen, the bottom half is a keyboard and trackpad, plus 7 retro shells. It took off on three things: the new hardware launch window, the developer's own viral-video craft, and organic pickup by creators. Technically it's no different from a pile of VNC clients; the difference is all in packaging and distribution.

### 1. Core numbers and data

- Launched: 2026-11-01 (releaseDate from the US lookup), announced the same day as 1.0.1. The developer has only this one app (developer id 6820676118). Price $5.99, no subscription, no in-app purchases. The Mac side requires the free Pocket Mac Connector, which relies on the screen sharing and screen recording permissions built into macOS 15. The support and privacy pages sit on a chatgpt.site subdomain, a site generated with ChatGPT.

- Charts (appstore database, daily totals across all storefronts): | Date | Storefronts charted | Best overall Top Paid | Best category chart | Total ratings across storefronts | |---|---|---|---|---| | 11-03 | 8 | 8 | 1 | 0 | | 11-04 | 28 | 10 | 1 | 1 | | 11-05 | 37 | 9 | 1 | 1 | | 11-06 | 43 | 7 | 1 | 5 |

- 11-06 by storefront (data card): #1 on the Productivity Top Paid chart in the UAE, Thailand, Colombia, and Uruguay; #7 overall Top Paid in Kuwait and #11 in the UAE; #64 overall Top Paid and #4 Productivity Top Paid in the US. Most of the top spots came from small storefronts with a low bar for Top Paid.

- Only 5 ratings so far. One UK reviewer gave it 5 stars: "Connects and works great… mirrors excellent my Mac Studio". Apple doesn't publish download numbers, so going by chart thresholds, real sales are probably a few hundred to a thousand or two a day (unverified).

### 2. Why users are showing up now: a platform event

- The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, priced from $1,999. Preorders began 2026-10-16, sales started 10-23, and it expanded to 28 more countries and regions on 10-30 (Apple Newsroom, MacRumors, Reuters). Preorders sold out within minutes, and supply was tight (CBS, Yahoo Finance).

- New owners who just got a $2,000 foldable were looking for apps that only the Duo could run, to find a use for the new device and to film showing it off. Apple itself was promoting apps "optimized for Duo" (Newsroom 2026-10-22; Digital Trends covered the "Made for iPhone Duo" badge).

- The "half-fold the Duo into a small laptop" form factor was already validated on launch day by Tiny Computers: made by Fountain Interactive, priced at $3.99,10-23, it ships 10 retro computer models that can't connect to a real device. In our database, it charted in 79 storefronts 11-06, hit #8 on the US overall Top Paid chart and #1 on multiple storefronts' category Top Paid charts. Lifehacker and CNET wrote about it, Reddit users called it "the Duo's first killer app," and @techknowbiz's TikTok, marked "Product provided by Apple for review," got 6.8k likes and 187k views, while @janellesdesk's video got 30k likes and 260k views. In other words, users' appetite for "Duo becomes a mini computer" had already been built up by Tiny Computers. Pocket Mac Lab answered the question in the comments: can it become my actual Mac?

### 3. Where users come from: TikTok / Instagram creators, teaser first, then the push

| Timeline | Account | Item | Data (TikHub, 11-06 pull) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-23 (Duo launch day) | @__diditee__ (the developer, 44k followers) | "I turned my iPhone Duo into a FULLY FUNCTIONING MACBOOK! … that's ACTUALLY MACOS!" ending with "Coming to the App Store REALLY SOON" | 7,564 likes / 166k views / 143 comments / 1,767 shares |
| 10-24 to 10-29 | Reposts from @applesfreshoriginas, Vietnamese @caocongnghe.vn, duets, etc. | Passed along as "Pocket Mac Lab coming soon" | Small volume |
| 11-01 | Launched. The developer posted "POCKET MAC LAB IS FINALLY OUT!" on IG, and the original video caption was changed to "It's FINALLY out… link in my bio" | "a lot of you dm'ed me," priced at "the price of a coffee … NO SUBSCRIPTION" | — |
| 11-04 | @papernroses (Chantal, 410k followers) | "turning my iPhone Duo into a baby Mac - but for real this time … App by @__diditee__ called Pocket Mac Lab", synced to IG and Facebook | 52,127 likes / 513k views |
| 11-05 | @taylybb (953 followers, photographer) | "I will only be using my tiny MacBook to edit my clients' photos" | 1,699 likes / 58k views |
| Other | YouTube Shorts "coolest iPhone Duo use everrrr app: pocket mac lab"; Thailand @iaumreview (556k followers) "เล่น MacBook บน iPhone Duo", Indonesia @ichsanzulfikar, Spanish @itsgabilopez "MacOS en el iPhone Duo" and similar (these don't name the App; which App they use is unverified) | — | — |

- The timeline lines up: after Chantal's video went up, charted storefronts went from 11-04 to 8 to 28, and 43 11-06 added 4 ratings.

- No evidence of paid promotion found: Chantal's video has no #ad; whether it was organic or a partnership is unverified. Our ad library doesn't track this App. App Store search may also bring in a fair amount, but we can't confirm it.

- The developer is a viral-video creator himself: his bio reads "Teaching the art of viral hooks!", and he has done brand partnerships with Artlist and Insta360, with a top single video at 1.95M views. Cold start cost nothing: he used his own account and his ability to make videos. He also says he was "sharing this idea before the duo was EVEN announced", so the concept was being teased before the Duo launched.

### 4. Why people are willing to pay

- A one-time $5.99 purchase, no subscription, which the developer stresses in the video. Users have just spent $2,000 on the hardware, so $6 is an impulse buy.

- The selling point is "this is really my Mac". The top-liked questions in the comments are "Is it mirroring your MacBook?" (1.5k likes) and "Does this actually mirror your Mac?"; there are also "It looks so laggy" (2.7k likes) and "you won't tell them it's remotely connected to a Mac" (530 likes). Viewers are both curious and skeptical, and that mix alone drives engagement.

- "Cute" is a key motive: Chantal's video is full of "so cute" and "ridiculously adorable". 7 cases (Studio, Daybreak, Circuit, etc.), and when the Duo's outer screen is closed it shows a matching "pear" cover, all made for filming.

### 5. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (this database / public info) | How Pocket Mac Lab differs from the rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny Computers(Fountain Interactive) | iOS | 2026-10-23 | 11-06 charted in 79 storefronts, #8 on the US overall Top Paid chart; 47 ratings in the US store; covered by media and reviewed by Apple's test units | Same "Duo turns into a small computer" idea with a retro look, but the Tiny Computers one is only a toy and can't connect to a real Mac. Pocket Mac Lab is essentially "Tiny Computers' look + a real Mac". |
| Headroom: Remote Desktop(MusicFlow / Haruhiko Kishi) | iOS / iPad / Mac | 2026-07-24 | Digital Trends 10-23 covered it as "turns the iPhone Duo into a pocket-sized Mac"; only 4 ratings in the US store; never charted in our database | Free to try, with Pro as a one-time purchase; no installing software on the Mac, it goes straight through VNC, and setting up Tailscale is up to you when out. More professional features, but no shell, no cuteness, and it didn't get traction on TikTok |
| Yosei(@yoseiapp) | Free iOS TestFlight beta | 2026-10 | 14 TikTok followers, 17k views on a single video | Aimed at developers: Tailscale, two-way audio, Apple Pencil, MCP so AI agents can operate the screen; not on the store |
| DualMac: VNC Remote Desktop(MARIUS LABS) | iOS | 2026-09-21 | Charted in category charts in 28 to 36 storefronts, best around #20; combined ratings across all storefronts 27 | Free VNC with Duo support, very much a tool feel |
| DuoBook: Pocket Mac(Mehdi Chitsaz) | iOS | 2026-11-02 | Just launched, not charted yet, 0 ratings | Copycat: free, same "Mac on top screen, keyboard and trackpad below" setup, with the outer screen as a customizable "laptop lid" (colors, initials, photos, glowing logo), and it literally uses the name "Pocket Mac" |
| Farroom, Pane, Paneport, Pocket VNC, Remoted, Porthole, RemoteGo, etc. | iOS | 2026-09 to 11 | Not on any chart | A dozen-plus new Mac remote desktop apps have launched since September; some added Duo split-screen support in their update notes (e.g. Farroom), but none took off |
| Chrome Remote Desktop, Jump Desktop, Screens, RealVNC, Microsoft Windows App | iOS / big tech | Years ago | Large user bases | The developer says the idea came from Chrome Remote Desktop, which he found "the wrong shape, unstable, always dropping". These established products are more capable, but none built the "folds into a laptop" form factor and shell for the Duo |
| Apple iPhone Mirroring, macOS Screen Sharing | Big-company features | — | — | Apple only built mirroring from Mac to iPhone, not the reverse (Reddit post "I wish we could use the Duo unfolded with iPhone mirroring"). The macOS built-in Screen Sharing is exactly the underlying layer Pocket Mac Lab depends on |

### 6. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- Technically there's basically no difference: the underlying layer is macOS Screen Sharing plus a Connector, same as Headroom, DualMac and Yosei. Headroom even launched earlier and got media coverage earlier.

- The difference is in the emotional packaging and distribution:
    1. The name and the video opening say only one thing: "turn the Duo into a real MacBook". No tool words like VNC or remote desktop.
    2. The retro shell and outer-screen cover ride the "cute little computer" aesthetic that Tiny Computers started, while fixing Tiny Computers' limitation of being look-only, not usable.
    3. The developer is himself a creator who knows how to write viral openers. On launch day he posted a contrast video, "this is real macOS", teased it for a week before release, and attracted lifestyle creators with bigger followings (Chantal, 410k followers) to organically make their own videos.

- So the differentiation is why it ran, but it's a difference in packaging and channel, not in technology. This kind of edge is easy to copy: DuoBook launched the next day, free version, with a customizable outer screen.

### 7. How visible it is

- Revenue is not public. No tech outlet has written about it: Digital Trends covered Headroom instead, and X search turns up nothing. It has spread within the "iPhone Duo" consumer circle on TikTok / Instagram (top single video at 510k views), but the developer and investor circles mostly don't know about it. Bottom line: it's spreading in small circles.

- Copycats already exist: DuoBook: Pocket Mac (11-02). And a dozen-plus general Mac remote desktop apps are adding Duo support.

### 8. What to borrow

- The "launch window" play for a new hardware form factor: in the two weeks around a hardware launch, owners most want to find "things only this machine can do". Repackage an old function (remote desktop) as a "transformation" for the new form, priced as a one-time $4 to $6.

- Grab the "show-off video" first: it has to look good on camera (shell, outer-screen cover), and the opening needs a contrast ("this is real macOS"). The developer acts as the first creator, then lifestyle creators spread it again from the "cute" angle.

- Ride on a similar hit: Tiny Computers has already educated the market, and Pocket Mac Lab filled the "actually works" gap. When you see a toy-style hit, think about its "real-function version".

- Minimal site building (a support page generated with chatgpt.site) plus one-time payment; one person can go live in about a week.

### 9. What's uncertain

- Real sales: only 5 ratings, and most of the chart positions come from a small circle. The #64 on the US overall Top Paid chart is roughly several hundred downloads a day (inferred).

- Retention and reputation: comments mention lag and keys that are too small, and remote desktop depends on network at both ends and the Mac staying awake. Refund and bad-review risk has no data.

- Whether Chantal's video was organic or a paid partnership; whether the "Duo turns into a MacBook" videos in Thailand, Indonesia and elsewhere use this App.

- Whether Apple will add official "Mac mirroring to iPhone" in iOS 27.x, which would replace this whole class of App.

- Duo shipment volumes are small (out of stock, backlog up to 2027 years), so the market's ceiling is limited by hardware sales.
