An "AI-only Instagram" with 19k installs in three weeks: the volume Orbit got is a paid acquisition test, not a hit
What it is An "Instagram" where you're the only real person: AI characters post, you comment and DM them, and you can build your own characters. Paid memberships add credits that earn revenue.
Why it took off It hasn't really taken off: parent company BeFreed spent about a week of ad budget on soft-launch tests, going Philippines → Brazil → Germany, so installs briefly spiked, and it got onto Brazil's Entertainment Top Grossing chart 78.
CHow you could follow it Don't follow this category. If you want to learn from it, learn its soft-launch process: list only on Play, test retention in cheap markets first, then test payments in Brazil and Germany, adjusting the free allowance and the weekly and annual plans while reading reviews.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-17 · 11-07 installs 18,899
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 6 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.Android · Ratings count (cumulative) Data 2026-11-04 → 2026-11-07 (4 days, 4 observations)
Orbit is an app that launched only on Google Play. Everyone in it except you is an AI character: they post, you comment and DM them, and you can build a character of your own. From Oct 30 to Nov 3 it brought in over three thousand installs a day, then fell back to over seven hundred a day. That curve reflects a San Francisco company with funding spending money on tests, not users spreading it themselves. Anyone looking to build can learn from it how soft launches and paywalls get tested; as a category to pursue, it isn't worth it.
Five messages from a Brazilian user
On Nov 4, a Brazilian user left a review of Orbit on Google Play: "The idea is really great, but I don't find it appealing. You can only post one update a day and chat with a character for five messages max. To get unlimited everything you have to buy the annual plan, there isn't even a monthly one. That's so cheap."
The same day another Brazilian user came back to change their review: "I have to come back and update this, because they added the weekly plan I've been wanting. It's still expensive, hahaha. Buying the weekly plan for a month adds up to a third of the annual plan."
The German reviews are saying the same thing. In Oct 31 someone wrote "I only sent 4 free messages, is this the daily cap?", and in Nov 1 someone else asked "why no monthly plan, I can't even try it." The developer replied in German and Portuguese, one by one, with the same line: "Orbit Pro is annual-only for now. We're working on shorter plans."
These reviews show where Orbit is right now: the team is testing pricing in several countries at once. Free quotas are tight, paid is annual only, and weekly plans will be added once they've seen how users react.
What it is
Open Orbit and the home screen is an Instagram-style feed. The posts come from fictional AI characters, like Kai (posing at a city station) and June (eating pizza) on the official site. You follow the characters you like, comment on their posts, and tap into a profile to chat one-on-one. You can also design a character's personality and look, and have it post photo and text updates in your "orbit." The store page lists two more points: users can view, edit and delete what a character remembers, and can generate images.
The official site askfriday.io/orbit says "for ages 18 and up" and "no porn or nudity." The Brazilian Play page rates it 16+. Payments come in two kinds: Orbit Pro, an auto-renewing membership, and Pops, a currency spent per use. In-app purchases run from $1.99 to $129.99, and the top tier went up from $99.99,0.1.2 (Google Play, 11-06).
One US user's review, 11-04, sums it up best: "It's basically Instagram but all AI, similar to Charm AI and Aspect AI. You added relationship levels, that's cool."
Who made it
The developer on Play is listed as "lowercase lab," which sounds like a small studio. Scroll to the bottom of the page and the developer info says BeFreed, Inc., at an address on Market Street in San Francisco. BeFreed is a company making AI audio learning. Its founder, Jisong Liu, was previously an AI engineer at Pinterest and Google. According to PitchBook, the company has raised about $2.5M, with investors including 645 Ventures and Afore Capital. Its main app, "BeFreed: Get Smarter Daily!", has 276K installs on Play, and 4,125 ratings on the US App Store (11-06).
Orbit's official site sits under askfriday.io, the domain of another product from the same company, Friday. The iOS and Android buttons both say "Public release ahead," meaning it hasn't officially launched. A new developer name, a borrowed domain, a site that doesn't promote, and a launch on Play only: this is an established app company opening a second line. They will run paid ads, and they understand subscription monetization.
Where the volume comes from
| Date | Total installs | Average daily new installs |
|---|---|---|
| 10-17 launch → 10-29 | 525 | About 1 |
| 10-31 | 7,428 | About 3,450 |
| 11-03 | 16,632 | About 3,070 |
| 11-06 | 18,899 | About 750 |
Data is from Google Play, with the in-between days estimated as averages. For nearly two weeks after launch, almost no one installed it. In Oct 30 a new version shipped, and installs jumped to over three thousand a day that same day, holding for 5 days before dropping off in Nov 4.
The chart placements follow a pattern too. From Oct 29 to 30 it hit the Philippines entertainment Top Free chart (145, 178). From Nov 4 it entered the Brazil entertainment Top Grossing chart, ranking #106 → #98 → #78. Then 11-06 it appeared on the Germany entertainment Top Grossing chart at #180 and Top Free at #194. Testing retention in cheaper markets first, then revenue in markets with stronger paying power, is a common soft-launch route.
We searched TikTok in English, Portuguese and German and found no content about this app. In the last 60 days no one on X has mentioned BeFreed, and there is no press coverage or Reddit discussion. Volume arrived suddenly, left suddenly, and no organic source turns up, so it's largely safe to assume paid acquisition. On Play alone, the most convenient channel is Google's app ads. This is an inference; we did not see the ads directly.
There's another odd detail: 762 ratings against 19K installs is a rating rate of about 4%, which is high for Play. The star split is 5-star 627, 3-star 89, 1-star 44,2, and 4-star 0 (11-06). It could be that the app only prompts satisfied users to rate, or something else; we haven't verified it. The 4.8 score on the store page shouldn't be read as word of mouth.
Where the money comes from
Reaching #78 on the Brazil entertainment Top Grossing chart means people are paying. But the Brazil entertainment Top Grossing chart has a very low bar, and we can't work out how much money that is. Its monetization leans toward heavy users: the free quota is so small it allows one post a day and four or five messages, membership started as annual only, and the top points tier sells for $129.99. This design earns from the small group who get hooked on chatting, not from broad paid conversion. The earlier reviews also show this approach drew plenty of complaints during the test period.
Who it's competing with
"A social network with only AI" has already been tried by others, and some of them failed.
| Product | Scale | Compared with Orbit |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect: AI-Only Social Media | Launched on iOS 2024-06, 545K installs on Play; multiple ratings on the US iOS store 10K; AppGazers estimates iOS monthly revenue at $150K–1.1M | Nearly the same concept, launched two years earlier, already taking payments worldwide |
| Butterflies AI | Coatue led a $4.8M seed round in 2024, then shut down 2026-03-01 | A social network mixing humans and AI, a failed precedent in the same direction |
| Character.AI | 70.7M installs on Play; launched an AI character feed in 2025 | Big companies have already built "characters posting updates" into a feature |
| Talkie / PolyBuzz / Chai / Linky | 20M to 60M installs each on Play | Veterans of character chat, with very heavy paid acquisition |
| Meta AI Studio | Built directly into IG and Messenger | No separate app to install |
Orbit's product changes are: feed, private chat, and character creation in one app, editable memory, added relationship levels, and no sexual content. Compared with Aspect and Character.AI, these are minor improvements, not the reason it gained traction.
Why it's worth a look
Orbit hasn't proven anything yet. Two things are worth watching.
First, the approach. A small company with one established app used a new developer name, a borrowed domain, and a site that doesn't promote, launched only on Play, tested retention in the Philippines first, then paid conversion in Brazil and Germany. Free quotas are tight, annual goes first, and weekly plans follow the reviews. The whole test likely cost about a week's ad budget (estimated).
Second, the direction. The one that really turned "a social network with only AI" into money is Aspect. Orbit is the Nth follower, and the company behind it has more money and more ad savvy than most indie developers.
If it were you
One-line take: Don't follow Orbit. It hasn't proven itself, the category is already crowded, and there's a precedent of a company that raised $4.8M and still shut down. What's worth copying is its soft-launch method.
Who it suits: small teams that already have one app, have a testing budget, and want a second line. They can use its process to test their own new direction. If the new direction has to be AI characters, pick an angle the big players aren't covering: characters for a specific language or culture (for example, Portuguese or Indonesian characters with local jokes and local taste), or a vertical audience (language practice, social skills).
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who have never run paid ads. The category has close to zero organic volume, there's no voice for it on TikTok, X or Reddit, and it can only be bought. Also avoid anyone hoping to stand out with the bare concept of "AI Instagram"; Aspect, Character.AI and Meta already hold that ground.
How to build it: if you do go ahead, launch on Play only and don't rush iOS. Set the free quota high enough that users feel "hooked": one post a day and four or five messages is clearly too little, and half of Orbit's reviews complain about exactly that. Offer both weekly and annual memberships from the start instead of annual only, so users can try for a week. Keep points for costly features like image generation.
How to acquire users: Google app ads plus Meta, with the weekly budget rolled out in the order Philippines/Indonesia → Brazil → Germany. At each stop, check next-day and 7-day retention and first-week payment, and move to the next market only if the numbers clear the bar. Shoot creative straight from the feed: the moment an AI character leaves a comment on your post.
When to act: if you want to test, finish a round before Q1 of 2027. Once Aspect rolls out Android fully, or Character.AI's Feed reaches more markets, this angle gets narrower.
What would mean we got it wrong: ① Orbit launches on iOS and goes fully public before December, with daily installs holding at several thousand or more and not coming in waves (which would mean the test numbers work and the direction has more room than we thought); ② users start posting their own Orbit feed content on TikTok or Reddit; ③ it holds a top-30 spot on the Brazil or Germany entertainment Top Grossing chart for more than two weeks. Conversely, if installs stay at a few hundred a day after November and it never reaches iOS, the test most likely didn't deliver, and the team dropped it.

One line
Orbit is the second app from BeFreed (a San Francisco AI audio learning company; the developer name on Play is "lowercase lab"): an AI-only "social network" with a character feed, one-on-one chat, and custom characters. It is currently soft-launched on Google Play only, and the official site still says "Public release ahead" for iOS and Android. It reached 19K installs in three weeks, but the curve is a short pulse from a paid acquisition test, not organic growth. It hasn't really broken out: the jump in the data is the result of a paid test, the differentiation is weak, and it's doing the same thing as Aspect, Butterflies and the Character.AI Feed.
1. Who they are
- Developer: listed as "lowercase lab" on Play, contact email [email protected], official site askfriday.io/orbit (askfriday.io is the domain of another product from the same company, the personal agent "Friday"). The support page names the company "beFreed, Inc." [askfriday.io/orbit/support; googleplay library, app table].
- Parent company BeFreed: a San Francisco company. Founders Jisong Liu (ex-Pinterest / Google AI engineer) and Jiaying (Cathy) Yang. PitchBook records 2.5M USD in funding (645 Ventures, Afore Capital, etc.) [pitchbook.com/profiles/company/865739-98; tracxn; LinkedIn].
- Another app from the same developer: BeFreed: Get Smarter Daily!, 276,513 installs on Play, 4,125 ratings on the iOS US store [googleplay, appstore libraries 2026-11-06]. So this is a new-vertical test from a funded team that already has paid-acquisition experience from a previous app.
- The product (Play listing, askfriday.io/orbit):
- follow fictional AI characters, scroll a feed of their posts, comment and reply, then open a character's profile for one-on-one chat;
- create your own characters (personality, appearance) and post text and images;
- character memories can be viewed, edited, and deleted; images can be generated;
- the declaration says it is for users 18+, but "pornography and nudity are prohibited"; the Play content rating is Teen;
- monetization: Orbit Pro auto-renewing membership, plus Pops consumable points. In-app prices $1.99–$99.99, rising to $129.99 at the top tier from v0.1.2 [googleplay library app_snap].
- iOS: Orbit is not in the appstore library; the website says iOS has not been publicly released yet.
2. Growth data (googleplay library)
| Date | Total installs | Daily new installs (historical backfill from AppstoreSpy, averaged across observation gaps) | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-27 ~ 10-29 | 525 | ~1/day | – |
| 10-30 ~ 10-31 | 7,428 | ~3,452/day | – |
| 11-01 ~ 11-03 | 16,632 | ~3,068/day | 525(11-04) |
| 11-04 ~ 11-06 | 18,899 | ~756/day | 762 |
- The listing date was 10-17, and for the following ten-odd days there was almost no volume. 10-30 it suddenly jumped to about 3,000–3,500 installs a day, sustained for 5 days; from 11-04 it fell back to about 750 a day. It turned on suddenly and stopped suddenly. The shape looks like a funded paid-acquisition test, not a curve driven by word of mouth or content.
- Charts it entered (all entertainment category charts) [chart_rank]:
- Philippines Top Free: 145 (10-29), 178 (10-30);
- Brazil Top Grossing: 106 (11-04) → 98 → 78 (11-06);
- Germany Top Grossing: 180; Germany Top Free: 194; Brazil Top Free: 184 (11-06).
- Philippines → Brazil / Germany is a classic soft-launch test path: first test retention in a cheap market, then test payment in mid-to-high ARPU markets.
- Monetization signal: getting onto the Brazil entertainment Top Grossing chart 78 shows people are paying. But the bar for Brazil's entertainment Top Grossing chart is low, so the revenue scale tells us little.
- Anomalous rating data: 762 ratings against 19k installs, a rating rate of about 4%, which is high for Play. The star distribution is 5★ 627 / 3★ 89 / 1★ 44. 2★ and 4★ have stayed at 0, while the counts for 1★ and 3★ are falling (47→44, 95→89) [app_snap histogram]. This distribution is unnatural. It could be in-app rating prompts filtering responses, Google cleaning up reviews, or rating manipulation. Unverified. No text reviews have been pulled from the library yet.
3. Where users come from
- Paid acquisition: strongly inferred, not directly confirmed.
- Evidence 1: the curve shape above and the order of country-by-country chart entries.
- Evidence 2: we can find no organic channel. Searches on TikTok for "orbit ai social" and "orbit ai", plus Portuguese and German keywords, return no content for this app. The "ORBIT AI" that does appear (wesleybruno.oficial, pitched as "miss Orkut?") is a different, Brazilian human social network, not this one. x-radar shows 0 posts about befreed in the past ~60 days. No media coverage, no Reddit discussion.
- Our Meta, TikTok, and Google ad libraries don't track this app or BeFreed. Not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't running ads.
- It's only on Play, so the most likely acquisition channel is Google App Campaigns (UAC), but this is also unverified.
- Parent company resources: confirmed. The team has funding, and the previous app has already built 276k Play installs, so they have ready-made paid-acquisition and subscription-monetization experience. BeFreed's main site pulls traffic through a large set of programmatic SEO pages (befreed.ai/podcast/…, /book/…). Orbit doesn't have that SEO yet.
- Store search: minimal contribution. The name "Orbit" collides heavily with others: Orbit AI Planner, Orbit-AI contact management, Orbit SEO, and more. It's hard to get volume from search.
4. Competitors
| Competitors | Channel | Launched | Scale | How Orbit differs from its competitors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aspect: AI-Only Social Media(Arch Platforms) | iOS + Android | iOS 2024-06,Play 2025-06 | Play 545K installs, +9.2K in the last ~7 days; 10,662 ratings on the iOS US store; charted in social Top Grossing categories in a dozen-plus countries; AppGazers estimates iOS monthly revenue at $150K–$1.1M (2026-10/11) | Nearly the same concept (you're the only real person, everyone else is an AI character, posting, commenting, DMing). Aspect launched two years earlier and is already monetizing globally. Orbit adds self-built characters and character-memory management. |
| Butterflies AI | iOS + Android | 2024-06 | Coatue led a 4.8M USD seed round; 2026-03-01 has shut down (Reddit r/ButterfliesAI) | A social network mixing humans and AI, a precedent in the same direction, which has already failed. |
| Character.AI (including Feed) | iOS + Android + web | App 2023,Feed 2025 | Play 70.7M installs, +219k in the last ~7 days | Big companies have already built "AI character feeds" as a feature, with character libraries and creator ecosystems far larger than Orbit's. |
| Talkie: Creative AI Community (SUBSUP / MiniMax family) | iOS + Android | 2023-06 | Play 60.8M installs | Character chat plus community, vastly bigger in scale |
| PolyBuzz | iOS + Android | 2023-06 | Play 57.9M installs, Top Grossing entertainment chart in France 10 | Character chat, heavy paid acquisition |
| Chai | iOS + Android | 2021 | Play 24.4M installs | Pure character chat |
| Linky AI(Skywork) | iOS + Android | 2023-07 | Play 23.7M installs | Character chat plus social features |
| Meta AI Studio | Big-company features | 2024 | Used directly inside IG / Messenger | AI characters built into the platform |
With this many products doing the same thing, the competition question isn't "is there any?" but "it's extremely crowded." Orbit's positioning is closest to Aspect's.
5. Differentiation
- Product differences:
- feed, one-on-one chat, and self-built characters, all three in one product;
- users can view, edit, and delete character memories;
- explicitly bans pornography yet is labeled "18+";
- clean branding that looks like Instagram.
- Compared with Aspect (feed, DMs) and Character.AI (characters, feed, memory), these are small improvements. They don't explain why it took off. The small early lift is fully explainable by a test budget.
6. How visible it is
Few people know about it yet:
- No media coverage, no discussion on X, no content on TikTok;
- Revenue isn't public;
- the website still says "public release coming later."
But the category it's in (AI-only social networks) has already been covered by BGR and TechCrunch (Aspect, Butterflies), and Aspect's revenue has already been publicly estimated by third parties.
7. What others can learn
- Soft-launch approach: only on Play, using the Philippines to test retention first, then Brazil and Germany to test payment. The website isn't promoted publicly. If the numbers work, they'll go to iOS and open up globally.
- A small team with a mature app is opening a second vertical under a new developer name and new domain, which isolates risk and brand.
- The monetization mix is "membership + consumable points (Pops)." The points most likely sell image generation and chat quota, with the top tier at $129.99, aimed at heavy users.
- The category itself: Aspect shows that "AI-only social networks" can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in iOS revenue. Aspect is what's worth studying, not Orbit.
8. Still unclear
- Acquisition channels and budget: no direct evidence; only inferable from the curve.
- Why 2★ and 4★ are at 0 in the rating distribution: rating filtering? Manipulation? Play cleanup?
- Retention and payment rates: after 11-04, daily installs fell to about 750. Did the ad budget run out, or were the test results weak? Unknown.
- Whether it will go to iOS and when it will launch globally.
- The actual revenue behind the Brazil Top Grossing 78 placement.
