AI Clothes Changer - Try On · SBS Tech

# The #2 photography app in Zimbabwe is an AI outfit-changer whose developer address is an Indian bookshop: no fees, ads only, targeting Africa

**What it is** An Android app: upload a photo, pick a style template like Christmas, Y2K or red carpet, and AI swaps your outfit. Free, ad-supported.

**Why it took off** Most similar apps require a subscription, this one is completely free. Add likely low-cost paid acquisition in English-speaking African markets, and the small-country photography charts are easy to crack. It quickly reached the top spots, and chart exposure brought in more installs.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't just copy the outfit-changer; copy the playbook. Pick an AI entertainment feature no one in Africa is serving yet (hairstyle swaps, holiday avatars, photo shoots), keep it free with ads only, use Google App Ads to climb small-country category charts first, and launch before the December holiday season.

Grade B: the "AI entertainment feature + ads only + buy African traffic" path is clear and few people know about it yet; but the same playbook already has Hit Studio and hcarevjapp, which started earlier and are bigger, the outfit-swap feature is already overdone, and ad CPMs are low while image generation costs are added. Whether the numbers work out is unknown. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-31 · 11-07 installs 228,096

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

AI Clothes Changer is an Android app: upload a photo, pick a style, and AI swaps your outfit. Within 10 weeks of launch it had 228k installs and reached the top 5 of free photography charts in Zimbabwe, Uganda and Rwanda. The product itself is no different from dozens of similar apps. It wins on two things: it removed the subscription wall that similar apps all have, and it bought traffic in sub-Saharan Africa, where nobody is competing hard. You can do these two things too, but someone already did them earlier and bigger.

### A bookshop, and a blogspot blog

On Nov 6, the #2 free photography app in Zimbabwe on Google Play was "AI Clothes Changer - Try On", published under the name SBS Tech. Scroll to the bottom of the store page under "About the developer" and the legal entity is **SAMIR BOOK STALL** , at Atabhai Chowk, Bhavnagar, Gujarat: a bookshop and stationery store in Bhavnagar, India, findable on Justdial and Instagram. SBS is short for the shop's name.

But the app's support email belongs to someone else (irsia1995@gmail.com), the privacy policy says "developed by Irsia", and the website is a free blogspot blog published in Aug 31. The most likely story: the actual coder borrowed a relative's bookshop business license to register an "organization" developer account (inference). Since 2023, new personal Google Play accounts must first run a closed test with 12 people for 14 days before publishing, while organization accounts don't; app workshops around Gujarat often do this. This account has only this one app.

### How it grew

Launched in Aug 31; when a third-party data site first picked it up in Sep 23 it had about 3,300 cumulative installs. Updated to version 3.0 in Oct 7, and over the next two days added about 15k (third-party estimate), then kept climbing:

| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 09-23 | 3,318 |
| 10-07 | 38,624 |
| 10-20 | 119,381 |
| 10-28 | 166,770 |
| 11-06 | 228,096 |

In the last 7 days +61,326, averaging 8-9k a day (Google Play installs, 11-06). Since October it has been 5-10k every day, with no sudden spike. That looks less like a viral video and more like a steady ad budget buying installs every day (inference).

All the chart positions are in Africa. Photography free chart, Nov 6: Zimbabwe #2, Uganda #4, Rwanda #5, Namibia #5, Botswana #8, Ghana #10, Tanzania #10, Nigeria #17, Cameroon #18 (Appfigures). Nigeria climbed from #38 in Oct 29; South Africa went from 123 to 69; Saudi Arabia only charted on Nov 4 (169). The US, India and the Philippines are not on the charts.

### What it sells

The store description lists 23 style templates: Christmas, beach, winter, street, date night, Y2K, Halloween, retro, formal, bohemian, red carpet, Indian style, Japanese, Korean, evening gown, business suit, sportswear... Four steps: upload photo, pick a style, wait for the AI to generate, save and share.

Note that it **does not need you to upload a picture of clothes** . Professional virtual try-on composites a "person + garment image", used to preview clothes before buying. This is a "outfit filter" that generates an image once you pick a theme, used for avatars, status posts, fun. The barrier is much lower and it reaches a wider audience.

Only one source of revenue: ads. The store page says "Contains ads" and there are no in-app purchases (Google Play, every day from 10-29 to 11-06). The privacy policy has a line "If you purchase premium features", but that's template boilerplate; no premium tier exists in the app.

### What users say

The store page shows 4.6 stars and 233 ratings. The rating count is only about 0.1% of installs; organically growing apps usually sit above 0.5%, which fits bought users who install and leave without rating.

Of the three visible reviews, two are negative:

> "this app needs to be fixed and it feels like you got a virus ... I hope you don't get no business from anybody", Kenneth Nagle, 09-25,178 people found this useful. "It very fantastic", Sunwa Baby, 09-27,148 people found this useful. "i didn't do what I expected I am really disappointed and not satisfied", Grace musimbi Lugaye, 10-20

The developer's replies are all the same template text. The 4.6-star average doesn't match the negative reviews that have been pushed to the top, suggesting most people only tap a star and don't write (inference). How well the image generation actually works, and whether there are usage limits, can't be seen from outside.

### Who it's competing with

"Photo + AI outfit change" was already a crowded category in 2026 (Google Play installs, 11-06):

| Product | Launched | Total installs | past 7 days | How it charges | main battleground |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TryFit: Virtual Fitting Room | 2025-05 | 7.23M | +61k | IAP + ads | Vietnam |
| AI Dress up (Bizo Mobile, Poland) | 2023-11 | 5.02M | +9k | IAP + ads | 18 countries |
| AI Image Generator (hcarevjapp, includes outfit change) | 2026-07 | 7.73M | +266k | **Ads only** | South Africa #11, Saudi Arabia |
| AI Photo Try On(Hit Studio) | 2026-06 | 1.31M | +101k | **Ads only** | Nigeria #34 |
| Adiz (Yudiz, India) | 2025-06 | 670k | +15k | In-app purchases | India |
| Moda AI | 2026-05 | 500k | +44k | IAP + ads | Nigeria |
| Outfityz | 2026-08 | 460k | +8k | IAP only | Nigeria |
| **AI Clothes Changer** | 2026-08 | 228k | +61k | **Ads only** | Zimbabwe #2, Nigeria #17 |

A few things stand out at a glance:

- **It's not the first to do this.** Hit Studio (June) and hcarevjapp (July) already ran the same "ads only + target Africa/Middle East" playbook, with bigger numbers. This one is more of a follower. It wins by picking smaller countries, which makes its ranks look better.

- **Most similar apps go subscription or IAP** . In a market like Africa, where almost nobody subscribes, the free ones have the edge.

- **Big players are in it too** : ByteDance's Hypic and CapCut flood TikTok with "AI outfit change" template videos, and Meta's Style Sketch is up +85k in the last 7 days. On the web, FitRoom, Krea and Magic Hour offer free outfit swaps and fill the first page of Google for "AI clothes changer".

There's another layer: the package name `ai.clothes.changer.tryon.outfitchanger` and the title stuff in clothes changer, try on and outfit changer, and the description repeats AI Dress Up and Virtual Try-On at length. Store search is one of its entry points, but how much traffic it brings is unclear.

### Where users come from

No TikTok videos for it turn up in search, nobody on X has mentioned it in the last 30 days, and apart from mirror sites and chart pages there's no coverage online. It has no content, no creators, no community.

What's left to explain 8,000–9,000 installs a day is mostly paid acquisition, most likely Google App campaigns targeting English-speaking Africa (inferred; I couldn't find its ad creatives). The evidence is indirect: the curve is flat with no spikes; the rating-to-install ratio is very low; the countries it charts in are exactly the cheapest-CPI ones; and an ads-only app only pays off once traffic is cheap enough. Then small-country photography charts have low entry bars, so breaking into the top 10 adds another round of chart exposure, and it snowballs.

Whether it actually makes money is not visible from outside. Ad rates in Africa are low, and each generated image also costs AI inference, so it may be buying volume at a loss (unverified).

### If it were you

**B: The playbook is copyable, but don't copy this app.** "Off-the-shelf AI entertainment feature + remove the subscription wall, ads only + buy English-speaking African traffic" is a clear path, and its 228k weekly runs 10 show it works. The weak spots: Hit Studio and hcarevjapp got there earlier and bigger on the same path, the outfit-change feature itself is overdone, and ad rates are low and image generation has a cost, so whether the math works is unknown.

**Who it fits** : small teams or solo builders who already have an AI image backend, can run Google app ads, and can push per-image cost very low. Having an organization developer account is a plus.

**Who it doesn't fit** : people who want to earn through subscriptions (African users don't pay); people building a long-term brand (this is a fast-in, fast-out business, and the reviews won't keep people around); people who can't do the ad math.

**How to do it** : stop building "AI outfit change" and pick another AI entertainment feature that's been proven but that nobody in Africa is targeting yet: hairstyle swap, AI portraits, holiday avatars, wedding photos, church or graduation themed photos, anything with local scenes. Use style templates instead of asking users to upload their own material, and rotate templates by holiday (right before Christmas is the right time). Before launch, do the math: the inference cost of one image versus how many ads one user will see in the app.

**How to acquire users** : Google app ads. Start by targeting small countries like Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia and Botswana with a very small budget to break into the top 10 of the photography or entertainment category charts, then expand to Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Stuff the package name and title with search terms.

**Timing** : the sooner the better, ideally before the December holiday season. This kind of window depends on local markets not being crowded yet. Four or five companies are already buying outfit-change traffic in Africa, and other features won't hold up for long either.

**Signs you've misread it** : ① its 7-day new installs drop below 10k before December and it falls out of the top 20 on the small-African-country charts. That means the budget was cut, most likely because ad revenue doesn't cover acquisition and image costs. ② It or ads-only apps like Hit Studio start adding a subscription wall. That means pure ads don't pencil out in Africa. ③ The top 10 of the African small-country photography charts fills up with five or six similar AI outfit/portrait apps within a short time. That means the traffic pool has already been discovered.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (most likely Google App Campaigns, targeting low-cost African regions)** : steady 5k–10k per day since October with no spikes; rating-to-install ratio about 0.1%; charting concentrated in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Ghana and Tanzania, the countries with the lowest CPI; ads-only monetization; none of the three ad libraries tracks it, so no creatives can be found

- **Confirmed** **Store search and keywords (ASO)** : package name and title stuffed with clothes changer / try on / outfit changer, description packed with AI Dress Up / Virtual Try-On and similar terms

- **Confirmed** **Small-country category chart exposure** : Nigeria photography chart 10-29 → 11-06, up from 38 to 17; several small African countries in the top 10 (Appfigures)

- Inferred **Step-up from a version update** : 10-07 update v3.0, +14.6k over the two days before and after (AppstoreSpy estimate)

- Inferred **TikTok, creators, X, media** : no TikTok videos for it turn up in search, x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 30 days, and there's no online coverage

## Why AI Clothes Changer - Try On (SBS Tech) made it onto the charts

> Google Play package name `ai.clothes.changer.tryon.outfitchanger`, photography category, listed 2026-08-31. Research date 2026-11-06.

### Bottom line

This is a "reskinned AI outfit changer" from a small workshop in Gujarat, India: **free, ads only** . It uses a set of templates (Christmas, Y2K, red carpet, Indian/Korean styles) to swap clothes in photos with one tap, and targets English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa: #2 in Zimbabwe's free photography chart, #4 in Uganda, and #5 in Rwanda and Namibia. It gained traction because it picked the cheapest traffic pool (Africa) and removed the subscription wall that similar apps commonly have, so it converts and rates better locally. The product itself has no technical moat. There's no media, X or TikTok discussion online, and no sign anyone is deliberately copying it, but the category is already full of near-identical products.

### 1. Data: how it grew

**Install curve** (cumulative, global; 9–October from AppstoreSpy estimates, from 10-29 on from our googleplay library `app_day`):

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-31 | 0 | Store launch (`app.released`) |
| 2026-09-12 | – | v1.0 appears on APKPure (30.3MB) |
| 2026-09-23 | 3,318 | First AppstoreSpy observation |
| 2026-09-29 | – | v2.0(APKPure) |
| 2026-10-07 | 38,624 | Updated to v3.0 that day; about 14.6k installs added across the two days before and after |
| 2026-10-12 | 62,567 | |
| 2026-10-20 | 119,381 | |
| 2026-10-28 | 166,770 | |
| 2026-11-06 | 228,096 | +61,326 in the last 7 days (about 8.8k/day) |

- Source: googleplay library `app_day_ext` / `app_snap` / `app_profile` (2026-11-06). Since October it has added a steady 5k–10k per day, with no sudden spike. That looks like ongoing paid acquisition, not one viral video.

- **Ratings** : store page shows 4.6 stars and 229–233 ratings (Play web, gl=ng, 2026-11-06). The rating count is only about 0.1% of installs, far below organically grown apps (usually 0.5–1%+), which fits bought users who install but don't rate.

- **Monetization** : `offers_iap = False`, `ad_supported = True` (googleplay library `app_snap`, the same every day from 10-29 to 11-06). The store page says "Contains ads" and lists no in-app purchases. The privacy policy mentions "If you purchase premium features," but that's boilerplate; no IAP is actually live. **My recall card's guess of a subscription-wall play was wrong: it's pure ad monetization.**

**Chart spread** (only English-speaking African stores + Saudi Arabia):

- Of the 30 stores in our library, the Nigeria Photography Top Free chart rose from #38 on 10-29 to #17 on 11-06; South Africa went from 123 to 69; Saudi Arabia only charted recently (169, 11-04). The other 27 stores (including the US, India, and the Philippines) show no ranking (`chart_rank`).

- Appfigures Photography Top Free chart (updated hourly, pulled 2026-11-06): **Zimbabwe #2, Uganda #4, Rwanda #5, Namibia #5, Botswana #8, Ghana #10, Tanzania #10, Nigeria #17, Cameroon #18** . Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Egypt, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, and South Africa are not near the top (appfigures.com/top-apps/google-play/<country>/photography).

- Of the 3 reviews visible, the reviewer names look American, Nigerian, and East African (Kenyan/Ugandan) (Kenneth Nagle / Sunwa Baby / Grace musimbi Lugaye), which matches the chart spread.

### 2. Who built it

- The store developer is named "SBS Tech," with only these 1 apps, and the account has been active for about 2 months (AppBrain developer page, via Jina search summary).

- The legal entity in the store's "About the developer" is **SAMIR BOOK STALL** , at Atabhai Chowk, Bhavnagar, Gujarat (India), with contact email dixitvasani31@gmail.com. It is a real local bookstore and stationery shop (verifiable on Justdial, Instagram @samirbookstall, and government procurement records). SBS is short for Samir Book Stall.

- But the app's own support email is irsia1995@gmail.com, and the privacy policy says "developed by **Irsia** ." The website is a free Blogspot blog (aiclotheschanger2026.blogspot.com, published 2026-08-31).

- Hypothesis (unverified): **the account is a borrowed or rented "organization" developer account** . After 2023, a new personal Google Play account must first run a closed test with 12 testers for 14 days before publishing; organization accounts don't. App workshops around Gujarat (Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar) often register organization accounts using relatives' business licenses to ship utility apps in bulk. The developer actually doing the work appears to be "Irsia."

### 3. Competitors: who else does the same thing

"Upload a photo → AI changes your outfit" was already a red ocean in 2026, with app stores, websites, and big tech all offering it.

**Android peers (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)**

| Product | Developer | Launched | Total installs | past 7 days | Monetization | main battleground |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TryFit: Virtual Fitting Room | SM Vision Lab | 2025-05 | 7.23M | +61k | IAP + ads | Vietnam |
| AI Dress up-Try Clothes Design | Bizo Mobile (Poland) | 2023-11 | 5.02M | +9k | IAP + ads | 18 storefronts |
| AI Image Generator: Edit Photo (includes outfit swap) | hcarevjapp | 2026-07 | 7.73M | +266k | **Ads only** | South Africa #11, Saudi Arabia |
| AI Photo Try On - Clothes Swap | Hit Studio | 2026-06 | 1.31M | +101k | **Ads only** | Nigeria #34 |
| Adiz-AI Outfit Changer & TryOn | Yudiz Solutions (India) | 2025-06 | 670k | +15k | In-app purchases | India Top Grossing |
| Bikini Try On / Dressify | AI Application Studio | 2026-02/06 | 520k / 520k | +32k / +28k | IAP + ads | India, Mexico |
| Moda AI: AI Outfit Changer | ByTech Solutions | 2026-05 | 500k | +44k | IAP + ads | Nigeria #33 |
| Outfityz: AI Outfit Swap | FuMaoMao | 2026-08 | 460k | +8k | IAP only | Nigeria #36 |
| AI Outfit: Style Swap | Gibsonmery | 2026-10 | 44k | – | Ads only | Turkey |
| TryLook: AI Clothes Changer | Taptura Studio | 2026-09 | 28k | +8k | IAP + ads | Vietnam |
| **This app, AI Clothes Changer - Try On** | SBS Tech | 2026-08 | 228k | +61k | **Ads only** | Zimbabwe #2, Nigeria #17 |

There are also same-name or similar reskins: `ai.clothes.changer.dressup` ("AI Clothes Changer - Outfit"), `aiclothchangeroutfitideas.fashiontrends.dressup` (GOPINTIX SOLUTIONS), `com.ai_dev.try_on_ai` (Asp Developers), DressTry, Saifs AI, and others.

**Other formats**

- **Big-tech features** : ByteDance's **Hypic** seeds TikTok with a batch of "AI outfit change" accounts (multiple results found as of late October). **CapCut** 's "Ai smart clothing template" template video has 71k views on a single post (TikTok 2026-11-06). **Meta's Style Sketch** (149k Android installs, +85k in the last 7 days, #5 in Indonesia lifestyle). **Kling** has an AI Clothes Changer feature page.

- **Web** : FitRoom, bitStudio, Magic Hour, Krea, and EasyFaceSwap all offer free online outfit swapping, and "AI clothes changer" fills the first page of Google search results (Jina search).

**How it differs from competitors**

1. **Free** : most Android peers use a subscription wall or IAP (TryFit, Moda, Dressify, Adiz, Outfityz). This app, like Hit Studio and hcarevjapp, **relies on ads only** . In markets like Africa, where almost nobody subscribes, free apps tend to convert installs and earn better ratings: 4.6 stars, and the visible reviews are mostly along the lines of "It very fantastic."

2. **Templates, no need to upload clothing photos** : the store description lists 20+ style templates (Christmas, beach, Y2K, Halloween, red carpet, Indian/Korean/Japanese styles, business suits, and more). Pick one and get an image. Unlike professional try-on that needs a person photo plus a garment photo, this is closer to an entertainment "outfit filter," with the lowest barrier to entry.

3. **Africa only** : most peers focus on India, Vietnam, Mexico, and Turkey. This app's charts are almost all English-speaking sub-Saharan countries, where it faces no serious competition, which is why small-country charts can reach the top 5.

### 4. Growth tactics: where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (most likely Google App Campaigns, targeting low-cost African markets) | Steady 5k–10k per day with no spikes; rating-to-install ratio about 0.1%; charts cluster in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Ghana, Tanzania, and Nigeria, the English-speaking countries with the lowest acquisition costs; ad-only monetization only pays off with cheap traffic; the standard playbook of Gujarat workshops. Our Google / Meta / TikTok ad libraries don't track it, so no creatives can be found. | No (inference) |
| Store search and keywords (ASO) | The package name `ai.clothes.changer.tryon.outfitchanger` and the title "AI Clothes Changer - Try On" pack in high-frequency terms: clothes changer, try on, outfit changer. The description stacks AI Dress Up / Virtual Try-On / outfit and similar terms. | Yes (the tactic is confirmed; how much traffic it brings is unknown) |
| Snowballing from small-country chart exposure | Small-country photography charts have a low bar, and a top-10 placement adds browsing traffic. Nigeria went from #10-29 to #11-06 (from 38 to 17), and South Africa from 123 to 69. | Yes (the ranking gains are confirmed; the incremental installs are not broken out) |
| Version updates | 10-07 update to v3.0: about 14.6k installs over the two days before and after, the first big step up in October (AppstoreSpy estimate) | Partly (timing matches; causality unverified) |
| TikTok, creators, X, Reddit, media | Searching TikTok for "AI Clothes Changer Try On app" or "SBS Tech" turns up no videos for it. x-radar shows 0 posts for "AI clothes changer" in the last 30 days. Apart from store mirror sites and Appfigures chart pages, no coverage turns up online. | Confirmed none |

### 5. Why it took off

1. **Timing** : by 2026, image models (Nano Banana, Seedream, Kling, and similar) could swap outfits convincingly, and API costs had dropped. A small workshop can wrap one in a shell and ship within weeks. It went from launch to v3.0 in just 5 weeks.

2. **Picked an uncrowded traffic pool** : peers are competing in India, Vietnam, and Latin America. This app bought traffic in sub-Saharan Africa, where acquisition is cheapest and competition thinnest, so several small countries' photography charts reached the top 5.

3. **Trade free for conversion** : no subscription wall, and users in Africa with low willingness to pay can use it right after install. Rating: 4.6. Ad revenue per user is low, but acquisition is cheap, and AI image generation costs have fallen, so the books may balance (unverified).

4. **Entertainment-oriented templates** : holiday and style templates (Christmas, Halloween, Red Carpet) target social avatars and photo-sharing, not serious "try before you buy" use, which widens the user base.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: few people know about it yet.** Revenue isn't public, no media or big X accounts have covered it, and there's no TikTok content for it. Third-party sources are limited to auto-generated pages like APKPure, AppBrain, and Appfigures small-country charts.

- **Copycats: no sign anyone is deliberately copying it.** The category is a template-like matrix: other ad-only apps that started in Africa or the Middle East include Hit Studio's "AI Photo Try On - Clothes Swap" (launched June, 1.31M installs, #34 in Nigeria) and hcarevjapp's "AI Image Generator" (#118M installs in South Africa). They came earlier, so this app looks more like a follower.

### 7. What to borrow

- **The combination of "reskinned AI feature + ads only + buying English-speaking African traffic" can be copied** : pick a proven AI entertainment feature (outfit swap, hairstyle change, AI portraits), remove the subscription wall, target the lowest-cost countries such as Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Ghana, and snowball off small-country category charts. The key is to run two numbers: per-image inference cost versus how many ads each user will see, and whether the swap model is now cheap enough for ad revenue to cover it.

- Style templates instead of "upload a clothing photo" give a lower barrier to use and more stable output, and rotating templates by holiday taps seasonal traffic.

- Using an organization developer account to skip the personal account's 12-tester closed test speeds up publishing (with compliance risk).

### 8. Still unclear

- Ad channels and spend: none of the three ad libraries track it, and the Google Ads Transparency Center shows nothing usable (no accessible API). Which countries users come from can only be inferred from charts.

- Whether it's really free: the store shows no IAP, but whether the app uses rewarded ads for extra generations or limits outputs hasn't been tested on a real install.

- Revenue: with ad-only monetization and very low African eCPMs, I can't tell whether it's profitable or burning cash to buy growth.

- Which AI model provider it uses (the privacy policy only says "Cloud AI processing services").

- The relationship between "SAMIR BOOK STALL" and "Irsia" (borrowed account, rented account, or family), unverified.
