One ad line, a 1-minute quiz, and a 5%-off annual plan: Elva sold "hundreds of unedited clips on your phone" into a subscription earning about $90k a month
What it is A phone editing app: you pick clips from your camera roll, say what feel you want, and it auto-selects footage, adds music and captions, and exports the finished video.
Why it took off A video ad reading "Stop spending hours editing, just say it" ran 50 times on Meta, funneling people who don't edit, mostly middle-aged women, into a 1-minute web quiz that plays on the feeling that "your memories aren't being seen." It then sells a high-priced annual plan at 5% off, with no free trial.
CHow you could follow it Stop building generic AI editors. Take this ad-quiz-annual-plan funnel into a narrow niche where AI can deliver reliably (pet memorials, kids' yearly recaps, small-shop promo videos), offer a free first video and easy cancellation, and fix the complaints it draws.

Elva is an app you edit video with by talking: pick clips from your camera roll, say what feel you want, and it selects the shots, cuts to the beat, adds music, and captions. Users are unhappy with the results, and most recent iOS reviews are one or two stars. Still, a third-party estimate puts its iOS monthly revenue at about $9k in 90, up from just a few hundred dollars half a year earlier. The product didn't do much of the selling; a paid acquisition funnel did: Meta video ads, a web quiz, a discounted annual plan, aimed at women aged 35 to 54 who don't edit. The playbook is worth studying, but the product itself isn't worth chasing.
A UK user who paid after seeing the ad
In 2026 June 19, someone gave Elva one star on the UK App Store with a single word as the title: "Scam."
"I saw the ad, got excited, and bought this app. It doesn't work. I tried many times and it still doesn't work, and I couldn't find anyone to help. They took the money and gave no service. No wonder there's no free trial."
Sep 9 another one: "Just paid £18, no free trial... no matter how many times I try, it doesn't cut the way I tell it to." On Oct 10, a user in the US store wrote that she emailed the support address to cancel her subscription and get a refund, and neither worked. She also couldn't find a cancel option anywhere in the app.
These reviews describe the same path: you see the ad, you pay, and only then do you discover the product doesn't work well. Elva's revenue depends on the first half of that path.
What it is
The first line of the store page: "Stop spending hours editing." You pick a batch of videos and photos from your camera roll and say "turn last weekend into a travel reel." It analyzes the footage, picks the highlights, arranges the structure, adds beat-synced music and transitions, and generates captions from the voice, with optional AI narration. If you don't like it, keep talking: "Make it punchier," "change the music." There's also a capture mode that gives real-time framing and lighting tips while you shoot.
The developer is Elvalabs LTD, which LinkedIn lists as a Cyprus-based company with 5 people. The iOS version launched in 2026 March 3, with 392 ratings on the US store, averaging 4.09 stars (App Store, 11-06). The Android version launched around September (the store's listed date is Jul 28, probably edited later). By Nov 6 it had 5,873 installs, with 8 more in the last 972 days, about a hundred a day. The brand, motion design, store images, and paywall were all done by the design agency Lazarev, which won a People's Voice Webby Award in 2026 for AI visual design.
Where users come from: one line, 50 ads
Meta video ads are the main channel. A third-party ad monitor (Airbridge, published 10-19) found Elva's Facebook page running 50 ads in October, versus a median of 21 for photo and video peers. From Oct 7 to 17, active ads went from 35 to 58. The top 13 creatives are all video, and 11 of them use the same copy: "Stop wasting hours editing... just say what you want... No skills. No timeline. Just results." The estimated audience is 69.5% US and 16.7% Spain; 61% women, 35–44 year-olds 37%, 45–54 year-olds 31%.
These aren't content creators. They're ordinary people with phones full of kids, trips, and parties they've never edited. Most have never heard of CapCut or Captions, and they don't mind a price of over $100 a year. Some US reviews are in Spanish, and some users edit "getting ready to make 2 lb pork rice" videos, which shows who the users are.
The ads don't send people straight to the store. They land on a quiz page first. The landing page is quiz.elvalabs.ai, with the headline "Turn your clips into cinematic videos in minutes" and the line below it "1 minute quiz — we'll set up Elva just for you". The page images load from FunnelFox's CDN, a web2app funnel tool. Lazarev's case study spells out the quiz logic: each question looks like it's collecting preferences, but really it makes you feel what it costs not to act. The original line: "How many unused videos do you have on your phone right now? Hundreds? That's a lot of memories nobody's ever seen." By the time the quiz ends, people already feel they owe themselves something, and the paywall comes next.
The paywall anchors on a high-priced annual plan. The iOS in-app purchases run from $9.99 to $149.99 across 10 tiers, many labeled "50% OFF Annual" or "50% OFF First Month." The $129.99 and $149.99 annual plans make the discounted price look like a deal, and there's no free trial. Android prices run $1.99–$129.99. Payments made on the web don't go through the store, so outside revenue estimates are probably low (inference).
They have a dedicated Head of Growth. The person who joined in 2025 December was previously a monetization consultant focused on onboarding, paywalls, pricing and web2app work, wrote "How to hack your Web2App funnel", and spoke at the 2026 Business of Apps conference in Berlin. After she joined, revenue went from $598 in March to a September peak of about $90k (Airbridge estimate). The timing lines up, but that doesn't mean she's the reason for it.
Almost no organic traffic. The official TikTok account has 2 followers. X has no discussion in the past half year, and Reddit and Product Hunt have no launch posts. The Instagram account @elvalabs.ai has 9,057 followers, runs "Comment VOICE" giveaways for links, and has one paid creator partnership, small in scale.
Reputation: 4.75 stars on Android, while iOS reviews are almost all one-star
Of 570 Android ratings, 514 are five-star, averaging 4.75 stars. But in the last 8 days there were 103 new ratings, and only 1 of them included text. About 10% of new installs left a rating, a very high share, most likely from an in-app prompt asking for a review (inference).
User-written reviews on iOS are a different story. Airbridge sampled 118 recent reviews, averaging 2.47 stars. The recurring complaints fall into these categories:
"I kept asking it to remove the music, it said okay, and then it just didn't." — US store, 10-14 "Too slow, I have to render over and over… regret buying it." — US store, 10-31 "Takes longer than editing by hand in CapCut. I asked it to delete one clip three times, and it deleted the one I said not to." — UK store, 8-27
Five-star reviews too: "I could never edit anything before. Now it looks like a pro cut it in minutes." (US store, 11-01) The people praising it are almost all folks who've never edited a video, which is exactly the crowd the ads are chasing.
So the money comes from first-purchase conversion, not retention. Renewal and refund rates aren't visible from outside. On the Google Play video top grossing chart, it fell from #93 in Nov 1 to #118 in Nov 6. Estimated iOS revenue peaked in September, so it may already be past its peak (inference).

Only does talking-head and UGC cleanup, narrower use case
"Say one sentence, get a photo reel" is not a scarce idea. Reelful and Elva launched the same month, and by 8 and October Narrative, Ody, CutAI and Picsart had joined. On the other side, CapCut, Edits, Premiere and the system photo apps are all free, and they're all adding AI. Elva's edge is mainly who it sells to, how it's packaged and how it charges. The editing itself isn't better than the others, and user reviews make that clear.
(US App Store rating and Google Play installs, early November.)
If it were you
One-line verdict: The thing worth copying is the funnel: a video ad with a hard promise, a web quiz that amplifies the cost of not acting, and a discounted annual plan. The category itself isn't worth going head-to-head in. It's already crowded, free big-tech tools sit underneath it, and AI editing is the hardest part to deliver. Most of Elva's bad reviews come from exactly that.
Who it suits: small teams that run Meta ads, can build a web2app funnel, and can work out how long it takes a first purchase to pay back; anyone who has an AI use case where regular people have the footage but can't make the result themselves.
One-line verdict: The part worth learning is the funnel: a video ad with a strong one-sentence promise, a web quiz that amplifies "the cost of not acting", and a discounted annual plan. The category itself isn't worth attacking head-on. It's already crowded, free big-company tools sit underneath, and AI editing is the hardest part to deliver reliably. Elva's bad reviews almost all come from there.
How to do it:
- Narrow the funnel to scenes where AI can deliver a good result, instead of building another general-purpose AI video editor. Examples: pet memorial videos, yearly highlight reels for kids, wedding and birthday photo slideshows, small-shop promo videos. The output format is fixed, so templates give stable, good-looking results. You don't need AI to understand every instruction.
- Do the opposite of what it gets roasted for. Its bad reviews cluster around three things: ignoring instructions, slow renders that crash, and hard cancellations and refunds. Offer a manual edit fallback, make the first video free to finish before charging, and put a prominent cancel button in the app. That way your paid acquisition money doesn't get eaten by refunds and bad reviews.
- Take the funnel into a narrower niche where AI can deliver well, instead of building another general AI editor. Examples: pet memorial videos, yearly compilations of a child's growth, photo slideshows for weddings and birthdays, small-shop promo videos. The output format is fixed, so templates can look consistently good without relying on AI to understand every sentence.
How to get users: Copy its skeleton. For Meta video ads, use one promise only, like "Stop spending hours editing, just say it," and keep testing new visuals around it. On the landing page, run a 1-minute quiz, with questions like "How many unedited videos are on your phone?" Target women over 35 and parents, and stay away from the young creator crowd that CapCut reaches. A web2app tool (FunnelFox-style) works out of the box, and web checkout also saves you the store commission.
When the window closes: The funnel playbook won't expire, but the "one-line AI video" pitch is becoming a free feature at big companies. Once the system photo gallery and CapCut make conversational editing a default, the room to charge gets squeezed. If you want in, get your materials and payback model working before the first half of 2027 (inference).
What it looks like when you've misread it: you've tested creative for a month or two and first orders still don't cover acquisition cost; or refunds and one-star reviews are piling up faster than revenue; or in your chosen use case, the system photo app or CapCut already does the same thing for free. If any of these shows up, stop.

Why Elva: AI Video Editor & Agent (ai.elvalabs.elva) is making it
Research day 2026-11-06. Data sources: googleplay / appstore databases (agent-im machine, from 2026-10-28/29 onward), Apple lookup and review RSS, Airbridge third-party estimate pages, Lazarev case pages, public LinkedIn / Instagram pages, TikHub, x-radar. Estimated figures are always labeled "third-party estimate".
Bottom line
Elva did not grow on product word-of-mouth. It is a paid-acquisition subscription machine: Meta video ads → web quiz (web2app) → discounted annual plan. One fixed ad line ("Stop spending hours editing, say one sentence and get a finished video") targets women aged 35–54 in the US and Spain, who go to quiz.elvalabs.ai for a 1-minute questionnaire and are then pitched "50% OFF" annual or monthly plans. A premium brand designed by Lazarev and award-winning credentials make the ads and store page look like a big-company product. The Android version only arrived in 2026 September, an extension of the same playbook and a small base (5.9K installs). User reviews are bad (refunds, hard-to-cancel subscriptions, instructions it doesn't follow), which means the money comes from first-purchase conversion, not retention.
1. What it is and when it launched
- A voice- and chat-driven mobile video editing agent: it pulls clips from your camera roll, you say "turn last weekend into a travel reel," and it auto-selects footage, cuts to the beat, adds captions and AI voiceover, and lets you keep revising by chat. It also has a camera mode that gives live framing and lighting tips while you shoot (Lazarev case page).
- 5. What it is and when it launched
- iOS: id6746770866, first on the App Store lookup 2026-03-03, currently 1.9.0 (updated 10-12), US store 392 ratings, 4.09 stars. The data card's note that "iOS launched 2025 years ago" is wrong: the id was registered in 2025, and the listing went live in 2026-03.
- Android: Play shows release 2026-07-28, AppBrain says Launched September 2026. The date was probably reset when the listing info or regions were changed. Version 1.9.2 → 1.10.2 (11-04).
2. Growth data
Google Play (googleplay library)
| Date | Installs | Score | Text reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 4,901 | 467 | 5 |
| 11-03 | 5,654 | 541 | 6 |
| 11-06 | 5,873 | 570 | 6 |
- Over 8 days: +972 installs (about 120 installs/day), ratings up +103 over the same period, ratings / new installs ≈ 10.6%, while written reviews grew by only 1. 514 of the 570 are 5-star (histogram [18,6,18,12,514]). This is a classic in-app prompt for good reviews (Google In-App Review). The Android 4.75 rating doesn't match the real iOS reviews.
- Top Grossing: 15 stores (hk/sa/pl/ae/nl/za/tr/ng/ph/ar/mx/sg/my/th/vn) show nearly the same VIDEO_PLAYERS Top Grossing rank, meaning it's the same aggregated chart, so it counts as only one signal. Its rank fell from 11-01 to 93 and then to 11-06 at 118. The #113 app on the same chart is Faceless Reels with 34k installs. The barrier to entry is low, so it doesn't prove high revenue.
iOS (appstore library + Apple lookup)
- Since 10-28, the library shows no US Photo & Video category chart placement. It only appears on category Top Grossing charts in small countries (Botswana 29, Ghana 31, Cayman 39, Nigeria 46, Bahrain 52), where the barriers are very low. Daily rating growth across stores is mostly 0–3, which suggests few daily Apple downloads or paying users who don't leave ratings.
- Third-party Airbridge estimate (published 2026-10-19): monthly revenue about $90K (peaking in 9-16), 14K monthly downloads, $6.43 per download. In 3-26 monthly revenue was only $598,135, and it grew about 66x within days. These are third-party estimates, and their reliability is unverified.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Meta video ads + web quiz funnel (core, confirmed). Airbridge found Elva's Facebook Page (page_id 936619842859837) running 50 ads, with 56 total, 2.4 times the photo/video category median (21). 13 of the top creatives are all video, and 11 of them use the same copy: "Stop wasting hours editing… just say what you want… No skills. No timeline. Just results. quiz.elvalabs.ai/quiz_elva_upd_v2". Active ad count went from 35 to 58 between 10-07 and 10-17. Estimated audience: US 69.5%, Spain 16.7%; women 61%; ages 35–44 make up 37%, ages 45–54 make up 31%. Our metaads / tiktokads / googleads libraries don't track it (it isn't on the list), so we can't cross-check it ourselves.
- Web2app landing page. quiz.elvalabs.ai opens to "1 minute quiz — we'll set up Elva just for you", and images load from assets.fnlfx.com, the CDN of FunnelFox (a web2app funnel SaaS). The Lazarev case study explains how the quiz is designed: every question amplifies the cost of doing nothing ("You have hundreds of unedited videos on your phone? Those are many memories no one sees"), then leads into the paywall. Payments made on the web don't go through the stores, so Airbridge's store revenue estimate is probably low.
- Professional growth lead. Head of Growth Natalia Burakova joined 2025-12 (LinkedIn). She is a monetization consultant focused on onboarding, paywalls, pricing, and Web2App, wrote "How to hack your Web2App funnel" on Campaignswell, and spoke at Business of Apps Berlin 2026. Revenue went from a few hundred dollars in March to a September peak after she joined, and the timeline matches (correlation, not causation).
- Pricing anchors. iOS in-app purchases run from $9.99–$149.99 across 10 tiers, many labeled "50% OFF Annual / Monthly / First Month", with the $149.99 and $129.99 annual plans as anchors. No free trial (a UK review: "Just paid £18 for this with no free trial").
- Instagram owned account + creators. @elvalabs.ai has 9,057 followers and 56 posts, featuring lifestyle reels like "solo founder starter pack" and DM keyword funnels ("Comment VOICE"). One creator partnership labeled "Paid partnership" (@laviedelalou). Small scale, supplementary.
- Design award PR (B2B-facing, not driving volume). 2026 Webby People's Voice (AI visual design), plus CSS Design Awards nominations, One Page Love, and Web Guru Awards. Fortune / Yahoo ran press releases about Lazarev. These mainly target Lazarev and the design community and do little for consumer acquisition, but they lend credibility to the idea that this is a big-company product.
- Channels not found: the official TikTok account elvalabs.ai has only 2 followers and 25 videos, and searches for "elva ai" and "elvalabs" return nothing. x-radar shows 0 mentions in the last 180 days. No launch posts found on Reddit, Product Hunt, or HN.
4. Competitors

| Captions(Mirage) | iOS / Android | 2020 | 145k ratings across iOS | Aimed at talking-head / subtitle work and AI Edit. The users are creators, not people editing family memories. |
| GoPro Quik, Google Photos / Apple Memories | iOS / Android / built-in OS features | Already around | 100M-scale | Automatically builds highlight clips and is free, but you can't direct it by conversation. |
| Narrative: AI Video Editor | iOS | 2026-09-30 | US store rating 442, charted in 44 stores | Nearly the same positioning (say a sentence to turn camera-roll footage into a video), but it keeps a timeline. It caught up to Elva's US rating count within a month. |
| Reelful | iOS | 2026-03-30 | US store rating 115 | Launched the same month as Elva with the same idea (prompt → finished video + narration + music), at smaller scale |
| CutAI | iOS | 2026-08-17 | US store rating 1,833 | Focused on talking-head / UGC filler removal, a narrower use case |
| Ody: AI Video Editing Agent | iOS | 2026-08-20 | 36 rating | Talking-head video agent with chat + timeline |
| Picsart AI Video Agent | iOS | 2026-10-22 | Just launched | A big-company "chat to video" tool, leaning toward generated short drama / trend reels |
| Eddie AI, EditWithAva | Web / desktop | 2024–25 | Not verified | Desktop agent for professional editors and creators |
Bottom line: the concept itself isn't scarce. Reelful and Elva launched the same month, Narrative, Ody, CutAI, and Picsart piled in between 8 and October, and free big-company tools like CapCut, Edits, and Premiere are adding AI too.
5. Differentiation
- Product layer: fully voice-driven with no timeline, an anthropomorphic "glass bubble" character (users refer to it as "her"), and real-time shooting guidance. Competitors rarely offer these, but user reviews suggest the core experience isn't better: recent UK and US reviews are mostly 1–2 stars, with repeated complaints like "doesn't follow instructions," "slow rendering, errors," "paid but can't use it," and "can't cancel, only refund by email." Airbridge's sample of 118 recent reviews averages 2.47 stars.
- Positioning layer (what actually works): it doesn't sell to creators. It sells to middle-aged people (women 35–54, parents, small business owners) with hundreds of videos on their phones who don't know how to edit, with the emotion of "memories nobody sees." This group doesn't know CapCut or Captions, isn't very price-sensitive about $40–$150 annual plans, and Meta can target them precisely.
- Packaging layer: Lazarev's brand, motion design, store screenshots, and paywall make the ad creative and landing page look "premium and trustworthy," which makes high annual prices easier to sell.
- So differentiation is why it worked, but what drove results was audience targeting + packaging + funnel, not technology.
6. How many people can see it
- Almost nobody discusses it on the consumer side: 0 posts on X, essentially nothing on TikTok, and no dedicated Reddit threads.
- It's public within the industry: Airbridge published a page with a $90K/month estimate and ad breakdown on 10-19. The design community knows it through the Webby and Lazarev case studies. In late October, design circles on Instagram were still talking about "AI companies still paying human designers" and using it as an example.
- Copycats: many similarly positioned new products already exist (Narrative, Reelful, Ody, CutAI, Picsart AI Video Agent), but there's no evidence any were copied from Elva.
7. What others can borrow
- The web2app playbook of "a strong-promise video ad + web quiz + discounted annual plan" can be carried over to any AI video scenario where ordinary people have the footage but can't make the product (photo books, family memorial videos, pet videos, real estate / small shop promo films).
- In the quiz, amplify the cost of inaction (memories forgotten); target non-creators over 35 to avoid CapCut's core market.
- On Android, use in-app rating prompts to inflate scores and bury negative reviews in the store.
- Risk: the product can't deliver on its promise, so refunds and bad reviews will hurt it. On Play's aggregated Top Grossing chart it fell from 11-01 → 11-06, from 93 to 118. iOS revenue estimates peaked in September, and it may already be declining.
8. Still unclear
- Actual revenue and the share from web payments (Airbridge only estimates store revenue, so web payments are invisible); ad spend (the $3K lifetime spend Airbridge reports only covers the visible EU portion and is clearly low).
- Whether Android users came through the same Meta funnel (Airbridge's ad sample doesn't link to Play).
- Team background and funding: founder and funding info not found. Whether the relationship with Lazarev is purely client-agency or involves equity is unverified.
- Refund and renewal rates.
