"The fake references ChatGPT made up for you": why Consensus's Android app is getting two thousand students a day
What it is An AI search engine that only searches peer-reviewed papers, with every sentence tied to a clickable paper source. The Android version is the phone entry point for its web product.
Why it took off The web product already had 2.5M monthly active users and 10M users. Existing users moved to their phones, and Southeast Asian lecturers on TikTok saying "ChatGPT makes up references, check with Consensus" brought students in by the batch.
CHow you could ride it Don't build a second Consensus. If you have student channels in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, or Nigeria, build a localized-language thesis assistant on public paper APIs (find real sources, format citations, self-check before plagiarism screening), and get acquisition from local lecturers filming "fake reference" videos.

Consensus is an AI academic search company that has raised nearly $50M. It only added an Android app in August 2026 and has gotten 144k installs in three months, mostly from students in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Nigeria. It's not a newly emerged product. An established brand has a new entry point. Below: where these installs come from, how it makes money, who it's competing with, and why we don't recommend a head-on fight, only copying a few of its moves.
A Malaysian lecturer's video
In Sep 8 2026, Malaysian university lecturer Dr Luqman Shah posted a video on TikTok with a title in Malay:
Risau dapat rujukan PALSU dalam ChatGPT? Gunalah kaedah ini! (Worried about fake references from ChatGPT? Use this method!)
Tags were #chatgpt #consensus #plugin. By Nov 6 it had 420k views. His account consistently covers one thing: how to write journal papers and get past Turnitin and AI detection. Several videos about "my AI detection rate is too high, what do I do" also sit around 400k views.
The same pitch is everywhere in Southeast Asia. An Indonesian account, @pande.digital, posted in Nov 1: "Using ChatGPT to find literature? Careful, the citations may be made up. Writing your thesis (skripsi)? Try these 3 AIs," with Consensus first. @fitrimarisachannel's June post was called "AI keeps hallucinating references? Try ChatGPT + Consensus."
One month ago, on Aug 5, Consensus launched its Android app on Google Play. On Oct 8, a Nigerian user named Adebayo left a review: "The info this app gives is mostly accurate and very useful for research, but I'm giving two stars because every time I open it, it kicks me out to the browser and I have to log in again. I want the app, not the browser." 20 days later, the official reply said it was a bug and had been fixed.
What it is
In one line: an AI search that only searches peer-reviewed papers. You ask a question, and it finds answers across 400M+ papers, writes a plain-language summary, and attaches a source paper to every sentence so you can click through and verify. For yes/no questions, it produces a "Consensus Meter" showing how many studies support, oppose, or reach no conclusion.
One line in the store description is the foundation of the whole business: "We partner with 7 of the top ten academic publishers": Wiley, AAAS, Sage, APA, ACS, giving access to full text behind paywalls you can't read elsewhere.
The app does what the web version does: search, read and ask follow-up questions on single papers, upload PDFs, ask by voice, export citations in APA / MLA / BibTeX, and import libraries from Zotero. You log in with your web account, and saved items and history sync over.
Where these installs come from
Look at the curve first. Google Play shows 144k cumulative installs (11-06), with 17.7k more in the last 7 days. By third-party daily estimates, it was 1,400–1,500 a day in mid-August, then stayed between 1,200–2,500 a day. Early September: 20k; early October: 60k; mid-October: 100k. There's no step, no single day of a sudden spike. It's not like a free-promotion chart push or a single big ad buy. It looks like a group of people who were already using it gradually switching to mobile.
It has only charted in the Education free charts of three countries: the Philippines (best rank #90), Indonesia (#145), and Nigeria (#193). It doesn't appear on charts in big markets like the US.
Installs come from three main sources:
| Source | What's visible | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Existing web users | The company says it has 2.5M monthly web active users (2026-05 funding announcement) and 10M+ cumulative users. Before the app, the official blog even wrote a post teaching people to "add the web app to your phone's home screen." The app is catching this group. | Large; the conversion rate is inferred |
| TikTok from academic creators in Southeast Asia and Africa | The Malaysian and Indonesian videos above; a Vietnamese lecturer, @thayphongnckhsinhvien, had one video in August with nearly 30k views; @drgisa_lecturer had one in February about the "perfect AI tool for writing literature reviews" with about 50k views. This matches its chart presence in only the Philippines and Indonesia. | Content is confirmed; whether it's paid partnerships is unverified |
| Paid creators (the old playbook) | Since 2023, there have been videos tagged #Consensuspartner, one with 860k views. In October 2025, a batch of study accounts posted "best research app" with nearly identical scripts. | Confirmed |
There are other routes aimed at brands rather than direct Android installs: since 2023 it has been a top research GPT in the ChatGPT GPT Store; university libraries such as Yale and WashU list it as a recommended tool; podcast ad reads ("one month free trial"); and an abundance of "Elicit vs Consensus vs SciSpace" comparison articles.
One new change to watch: on TikTok in 2026, videos about "Claude + Consensus" have multiplied. A Spanish-language account, @carlitosmanosalvas, posted in July a video on connecting Consensus to Claude for research, with 80k views; an Indonesian account, @dr.mirzazaka, said in August, "Everyone says don't use Claude, the references hallucinate, but connect it to PubMed or Consensus and it's different." Its May 2026 launch week pushed an MCP interface and a new API. Its entry point is moving into other people's chat assistants; the mobile app is just one of the doors.
Where the money comes from
The app itself doesn't charge, and the store page doesn't list in-app purchases. The description lists two tiers, Pro (20 papers per synthesis) and Deep (searches 50 papers and produces a structured literature review), with subscriptions paid on the web. The official help page lists prices: Pro is $20/month or $144/year; Deep is $65/month or $540/year. There is also an institutional version for universities and teams.
Public revenue figures: in 2024 its Series A came with annualized revenue of $1.5M; in July 2025 ARR was $4.8M (Tim Draper said so on LinkedIn); in May 2026 it raised a $30M Series B. How much of that comes from mobile subscriptions isn't visible from outside.
Putting the subscription on the web and in the app for free saves the 15–30% store cut. For a company that already takes payment on the web, that's the smoothest move.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Where | Scale | How it differs from Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elicit | Web | There's no official app on Play. Searching the name turns up a name-squatting "Elicit AI Research" with about 50k installs. | More focused on systematic reviews and turning papers into tables. More specialized. |
| SciSpace | Web, Chrome extension, iOS | iOS US store has only 11 ratings | Leans toward reading PDFs and writing help. Barely any traction on mobile. |
| OpenEvidence | iOS, Android, web | About 550k installs on Play, 12k ratings on the US iOS store | Clinical Q&A for doctors only |
| Perplexity | All platforms | Play 134M installs | Searches the whole web, not just papers |
| ResearchGate | iOS, Android | About 2.18M installs on Play | Academic social network and paper library, no AI reviews |
| ChatGPT / Gemini deep research, Google Scholar | big tech | huge | General models make up citations. That's the very gap all of Consensus's ads are built on. |
Interestingly, on Android it has almost no real competition. Elicit and SciSpace never shipped a proper official app, and students searching their names install a name-squatting "guide" app. That leaves Consensus an open lane on phones, but it's held by the brand, not by how good the mobile version is. The store reviews complain about slowness, panels that won't open, and constant bounces to the browser.
Can you follow it?
Hard to compete head-on. Most of what made it take off is out of reach for followers:
- Publisher licensing. Full-text paywalled content from 7 major publishers, the result of a company negotiating for years. A small team can't get those deals.
- 2.5M monthly web users. The Android installs are this audience switching devices, not new users drawn in by an app.
- It's already well known. Three funding rounds have been reported, revenue is public, reviews are everywhere, and when students search "AI for finding papers" it's on the first page.
Three things are worth copying:
- Use a pitch built on something users truly fear. Students in Southeast Asia are less afraid of "can't find papers" than of "the references my submission cites were made up by ChatGPT." Nearly every viral video title uses that line.
- Hire local lecturers, not influencers. A lecturer teaching "thesis writing tips" and bringing in the tool along the way gets trust from students at low cost. Academic accounts in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Nigeria often pull tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views.
- Web first, app second, and collect payment on the web. The app only catches existing users; it doesn't carry the payment.
If it were you
C
There are lessons here, but following it isn't worth much. Copying an "AI that only searches papers" to fight Consensus means going up against it with no publisher content, no existing users, and no name. Its free tier includes a set number of deep searches a month, which is enough for most students (inference).
Who it suits: people who already have voice in a student community in a specific country, such as a lecturer or PhD with an academic account in Indonesia, Vietnam or Nigeria, who want to build a local-language "thesis assistant." It's not a search engine but an end-to-end flow: finding real literature, formatting citations to the local university's style, and self-checks before plagiarism and AI-detection scans. Consensus only covers the first step, and its store page and blurb are English-only (whether the interface has local languages is unverified).
Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming at the global English market, anyone hoping to build academic search more accurate than Consensus with tech alone (accuracy depends on the paper library and licensing, not the model), or anyone without a local student channel who only writes code.
How to build it: use public paper APIs for retrieval (Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex and Crossref are all free), or connect to Consensus's own open API, and don't build your own index. Focus on the workflow and localization: questions in local languages, citation formats for local universities, and templates for each thesis chapter. Take payment with local payment methods and cheap per-semester plans, not a copy of the $20 monthly price (inference: students in these markets have a much lower ceiling on what they'll pay).
How to get users: follow Consensus's approach in Southeast Asia. Have local lecturers film videos like "ChatGPT's references are fake, here's how to check," one pain point per video: fake citations, Turnitin similarity scores, AI-detection rates, and papers sent back by supervisors over formatting.
Timing: aim for thesis season. In Indonesia and the Philippines, end-of-semester thesis submission peaks roughly in 12–January and 5–July (inference, varies by school), so have a usable version and a few videos running by April of 2027 at the latest.
Signs you've got it wrong: (1) Consensus launches local-language interfaces such as Indonesian or Vietnamese, or signs whole-campus licenses in these countries and universities, and the localization gap is filled by them. (2) Google Scholar, Gemini or ChatGPT's free tier starts giving clickable, verified paper citations directly, and the "AI makes up papers" pain point disappears with it. (3) The reverse: if Consensus's Android installs keep charting in Indonesia and the Philippines and climb toward the top 50 in education, while no local-language equivalent exists yet, then this student demand is bigger than it looks, and it's worth moving sooner.
Last point: what Consensus's mobile version tells you isn't that "academic AI still has room." It's that a product already built on the web can add a port and new countries, and gain two thousand more users a day without spending much. If you have a web product that already works, ask yourself: where are my existing users, what phones do they use, and has anyone on TikTok already explained my selling point for me?

Consensus: AI for Research (app.consensus.android) research report
Data card: /home/ljr/fanout/why/cards/play_app.consensus.android.json · research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This isn't a "new app that took off." It's an already well-known AI academic search company (Consensus NLP, founded in 2021, about $48.9M raised cumulatively, self-reported 10M+ users and 2.5M monthly web users) shipping an Android client in 2026-08-05. Its installs come from existing web users plus Southeast Asian students following TikTok creators, running 1.5k–2k installs a day. The curve is smooth, with no sign of a spike or paid push. Revenue and funding have been public for a long time, the category is crowded, and there's no new opportunity signal.
1. Data (from our database)
- Cumulative global installs 143,969 (googleplay.app_profile, 2026-11-06), up +17,692 over the last 7 days. Only 102 ratings, averaging 4.5 stars, histogram [1 stars 12, 5 stars 89] (app_snap).
- Installs since launch (googleplay.app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 08-15 had 1,445 installs → 09-01 about 20k → 10-01 about 62k → 10-15 about 100k → 11-05 about 144k. Daily gains stayed between 1.2k and 2.5k, with only occasional single-day spikes of 6k–9.5k (10-04, 10-08, 10-21, most likely averaging error from merged observation days). No free-promotion chart spikes or paid-push steps, just steady organic conversion.
- Chart (googleplay.chart_rank, from 10-29): only appears on the Philippines Education Top Free chart (best 90), Indonesia Education Top Free (best 145), and Nigeria (193); not on US or other major store charts.
- The listing doesn't flag in-app purchases (offers_iap = False), but the description mentions Pro / Deep tiers. Payment goes through a web subscription, not Play billing (inferred; whether it can be subscribed to inside Play is unverified).
- The developer has only these 1 apps in the database. Searching "consensus research / consensus ai for research" in the US App Store turned up no iOS app (2026-11-06 iTunes Search API). The Android version may have launched before iOS (unverified; the privacy policy mentions both iOS and Android clients).
2. Company background: no longer a secret
- Founded in 2021 by Christian Salem and Eric Olson, two former D1 athletes who were teammates (consensus.app/home/about-us).
- Seed round of $3M (reported by VentureBeat); Series A of $11.5M in 2024, led by USV, when it had 400K MAU and $1.5M annualized revenue (consensus.app/home/blog/announcing-our-11-5m-series-a-fundraise; mobihealthnews).
- ARR $4.8M at 2025-07, 3.85M registered users, 460K MAU (arr.club/signal/consensus-reaches-5m-arr, sourced from Tim Draper's LinkedIn).
- 2026-05-11 Series B of $30M, led by GreatPoint Ventures, with DJ Patil joining the board; web MAU of 2.5M (consensus.app/home/blog/30m-in-new-funding…; mgmtboston.com). Tracxn records a cumulative $48.9M across 6 rounds.
- Claims 10M+ researchers, students, and doctors use it, covering 10K+ hospitals and universities (Play listing; zilliz.com/customers/consensus). Universities including Yale and WashU list it as a recommended tool or trial (ai.yale.edu; beckerguides.wustl.edu).
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Southeast Asian academic creators, organic and collaborative content | Malaysia @dr.luqman.shah 2026-09-08 posted "ChatGPT makes up fake citations, use Consensus" to 420k views; Indonesia @ruangriset.id; Vietnam @thayphongnckhsinhvien 2026-08-28 nearly 30k views; @drgisa_lecturer 2026 two posts in the past year at about 50k each. This matches the fact that Play only shows up on the education charts in the Philippines and Indonesia. | Content confirmed; whether it's paid is unverified |
| ChatGPT GPT Store / ChatGPT plugin | Since 2023, one of the top research GPTs in the GPT Store (consensus.app/home/blog/introducing-researchgpt-by-consensus). OpenAI's site has a Consensus plugin page (openai.com/business/plugins/consensus). | Confirmed (credited to the brand, doesn't directly drive Android installs) |
| Podcast sponsorship | The "The Automated Daily" podcast host reads an ad: "Consensus: AI for Research, get.consensus.app/automated_daily for a free month" (podcasts.apple.com). | Confirmed |

| Paid advertising | Our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries show no tracked ads for it (not on the list doesn't mean it isn't advertising) | Not verified |
4. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Consensus differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elicit | Web | Around 2022 | Millions of researchers (unverified). Play has no official app, only a copycat "Elicit AI Research" (Yeteamapps, about 50K installs, googleplay database). | Leans toward systematic reviews and tabular extraction. Consensus leans toward "ask a yes/no question and see the literature consensus" and is more mainstream. |
| SciSpace(PubGenius) | Web / Chrome / iOS | iOS 2025-02 | The US iOS store has only 11 ratings (iTunes). On Android, most results are guide apps riding on the name. | Leans toward reading PDFs and writing. Barely any traction on mobile. |
| OpenEvidence | iOS / Android / web | iOS 2024-08,Android 2024-10 | About 550K installs on Play; 12K ratings on the US iOS store (googleplay / appstore databases). | Only does clinical Q&A for doctors. Consensus covers all disciplines plus students. |
| Perplexity (including Academic mode) | All platforms | 2023 | Play 134M installs | General search. Consensus only searches peer-reviewed literature and attaches citations to each sentence. |
| ResearchGate | iOS / Android | Early on | About 2.18M installs on Play | Academic social network + paper library, no AI synthesis |
| R Discovery(Cactus) | iOS / Android | 2020 | iOS US store 926 ratings | Paper recommendation feed, not Q&A |
| alphaXiv | iOS | 2026-07 | iOS 17 ratings | Only does arXiv preprint discussion |
| ChatGPT / Gemini Deep Research, Google Scholar | Big-company features | 2024–2025 | huge | General models make up citations. Consensus's selling point is precisely "doesn't invent references." |
5. Differentiation
- Searches only peer-reviewed literature, attaches citations to each sentence, and provides a "consensus table" (Consensus Meter). It turns "ChatGPT invents fake references," the thing students fear most, into its selling point. The titles of Southeast Asian TikTok videos are nearly all this same pitch ("Worried ChatGPT gives fake references?").
- Publisher licensing: partners with 7 of the top ten publishers, including Wiley, AAAS, Sage, APA, and ACS, giving access to full text behind paywalls (Play listing, Launch Week Day 5). Small teams can't copy this.
- One of the few academic AI tools with a real native mobile app: Elicit and SciSpace have no decent official apps on Play, and searching their names turns up guide apps riding on the name. So on Android it has almost no direct competitor, but this is "the brand moving to a new platform," not a differentiator that made it take off.
- The differentiation is genuinely why the web version took off (accurate citations + publisher content + first-mover in the GPT Store). Growth of the Android version is simply an extension of that brand.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue is public (ARR $1.5M → $4.8M, arr.club; the official blog has shared revenue numbers), all three funding rounds were covered by the media, and review articles are everywhere: revenue is public and widely discussed.
- Copycats: Play has many guide apps riding on the SciSpace and Elicit names (com.studyanara.hub "Elicit AI Research" with about 50K installs; "Scispace Ai Assistant Guia," etc.). AppBrain and Aptoide also host tutorial APKs named "AI Consensus's App Explanation" that ride on the Consensus name.
7. What to borrow
- Built retention and payments on the web first, then launched a native app to capture existing users. The app has no in-app purchases; subscriptions go through the web to avoid Play's fees.
- Used a pain point real users fear (AI fabricating citations) as the TikTok hook, and recruited local academic creators (lecturers and PhDs in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam) to talk about "paper writing tips." This gained traction among students in developing countries at low cost.
- Treats content rights (publisher partnerships) as the moat.
8. Still unclear
- Whether the iOS version has launched (not findable in the US store).
- The geographic distribution of Android users (Southeast Asia dominant is inferred only from charts and TikTok).
- Whether there is paid acquisition, and which Southeast Asian creator content was paid partnerships.
- How many paid subscriptions the mobile app brings in.
