Foldman: cassette player · APPxygen

# A Thai developer turned the Galaxy Z Fold 8 into a cassette deck. Foldman has 3,800 installs after just over a week, but this space is already crowded.

**What it is** A local music player that turns the book-style foldable phone into a cassette walkman: open it to pick a tape, half-open to adjust settings, close it to play music on the cover screen.

**Why it took off** The Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo's wide cover screens had just launched. On iOS, Deck-Man got the buzz going first. 11-01 A tech blogger's TikTok went viral, and the same-named open-source version got press coverage but wasn't on Play, so search traffic landed on this app.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another large foldable cassette deck. Go after what it does poorly: a vertical small-foldable cover-screen version, a connection to Plex/NAS libraries, or a different retro object. The more useful lesson is the playbook: when new hardware drops, ship a platform version in two or three weeks, film the video first, then list it.

Grade C: at least six look-alikes appeared within a month, the originator got covered by TechCrunch, revenue is nearly invisible, and the window rides the novelty of new hardware. The playbook is worth learning, but following this category isn't a good bet. Circulating in small circles

The foldable cassette deck idea started on iPhone Duo first. Foldman is an Android follow-up: built by one person, free, listed for less than two weeks, with 4,134 installs. A TikTok with 378k views got it onto the free music charts in 12 countries. Below: why it took off, where the money comes from, and whether it's still worth building another one.

### One video, and one comment

In 2026 Nov 1, a tech creator on TikTok with 200k followers, whose main phone is a Galaxy Z Fold 8, posted a short video under @techdude99___ with one line: "the app is called foldman for those wondering. very cool stuff." In the video he opens the phone, stands cassette tapes up on a shelf, drags one into the slot, and closes the phone. The cover screen becomes a portable player: silver buttons, a tape counter, a volume wheel.

By 11-06 the video had 378k views and 18.7k likes, with no ad label. The most-liked comment mocked the iPhone: "iPhone users are busy finding excuses for the Duo while the Fold 8 is crushing it." Others asked, "What's this app called?" and "Where do I even download it? It's not on Galaxy Store or the App Store." Someone replied with the full name, "it's called foldman:cassette player", and posted a screenshot. That's the full name of APPxygen's app on Google Play.

The next day, Foldman's daily installs jumped from a few hundred to 1,359 (third-party estimate, 11-02). Before that it had only charted in Thailand. 11-02 It then reached the UAE and South Korea, 11-03 then expanded to 10 countries, 11-04 with 15 in total. Its best rank was #66 on the UK music free chart.

| Date | Google Play cumulative installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 2 | – |
| 10-30 | 353 | – |
| 11-02 | 849 | – |
| 11-03 | 2,208 | 26 |
| 11-05 | 4,134 | 44 |
| 11-06 | 4,134 | 50 |

(Play install counts refresh only every day or two. 11-04 and 11-06 haven't changed, which doesn't necessarily mean it stopped.)

### What it is: close the phone, and the tape turns

Foldman treats the book-style foldable as a cassette deck, and the opening angle is the switch. The store page says it plainly: "THE HINGE IS THE SWITCH":

- **Fully open is the tape door** : every album on your phone is a cassette standing on the shelf. You can drag one in to play it, write a label by hand, or spin the tape with your finger on the workbench.

- **Half-open is the service hatch** : here you pick the music folder, tape speed, tape tone, and wear level.

- **Closed is play** : the cover screen is the machine. Press STOP to pause, press again to rewind.

In similar apps, the hinge usually has two states (open = pick a tape, closed = play). It adds a half-open state and puts a lot of effort into treating the tape as a physical object: tapes you play often yellow, pick up scratches and dust, and you can wipe them off with your finger; a loose tape can be "chilled in the fridge"; if you pull out a side B mid-play, it resumes from that spot next time; each button has its own mechanical click and vibration.

It also deliberately skips Spotify and YouTube. The store page has a section, "WHY NO SPOTIFY OR YOUTUBE? On purpose": streaming songs are locked inside other companies' apps, and wrapping a skin around them can't reach the audio, so rewind and tape-spinning aren't possible. It only plays files you store on the phone, like MP3 and FLAC.

The last line of the store description reads: "Inspired by Duo-Man by Vidit Bhargava." The developer openly admits they're following it.

### Who made it: a person in Thailand who started filming more than a month ago

The developer, APPxygen, says on their website "made by one person at home". Their TikTok account @sereeimt has only 279 followers and mostly posts Thai-language videos, and the store page specifically mentions handwritten labels and "Thai language support". So the developer is most likely an indie developer based in Thailand (inferred).

They started filming early. On Oct 2, they posted the first video, "When your galaxy z fold 8 wants a retro vibe! #Foldman" (6,305 views), before the app was listed. On Oct 14, the Thai tech media account @droidsans posted a Thai-language video, "แอป Foldman 有 Walkman 的感觉,用卡带放歌" (the Foldman app has a Walkman feel, playing songs through cassettes), with 255k views. Another Thai tech account, @flashfly.official, 10-10 also reviewed it (2,691 views). On Oct 30, the developer announced "Available today on Google Play Store!" In the first few days it ranked between #142 and #169 on Thailand's music free chart, driven by this local Thai content.

After launch, updates came frequently: 1.0.2 expanded to 43 phone bodies, 1.0.5 added support for non-foldable regular phones (showing only the closed player), and 1.1 added mixtapes. They also released a Foldman CD version (469 installs) that shares the same music library with the cassette version.

### Why now: two new phones, and seven or eight look-alikes in a month

This category was pushed by hardware. In the fall of 2026, two foldable phones with wide cover screens launched in close succession: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 widened its cover screen to 16:10; the iPhone Duo went on sale in Oct 23 at $1,999. "Close to play, open to pick a tape" finally had the right hardware, and a large group of people who had just bought new phones were looking for fun apps.

The demand was proven on iOS first. In Sep 28, TechCrunch called Vidit Bhargava's Duo-Man demo the "first killer app" for the iPhone Duo, and CNN-News18, Yahoo Tech and PCMag all followed with coverage. The app was later renamed Deck-Man, launched 10-14, sold as a one-time purchase for $4.99, and hit #16 on the US Top Paid overall chart and #1 in the Top Paid Music category.

Foldman also picked up some unexpected traffic. In Oct 21,9-5, Google wrote an article titled "Someone made a Walkman music player for the Galaxy Z Fold 8", and Sammyfans and a few others followed. But the article was actually about a different open-source Foldman by Devesh Rai on GitHub (35 stars, APK only, no updates after 10-21). It is not the same person as APPxygen; both just came up with the same name (Fold + Walkman). That version isn't on Play, so people who read the article and searched Play for "Foldman" could only find APPxygen's app (inferred, most likely).

### Where the money comes from: nearly invisible

Free to download, no ads, no account needed. In-app purchases are $0.99 to $7.49 each, probably for body skins. It has never charted in any country's top grossing, and the developer has never shared revenue. Assuming 4,000 installs and a small group of enthusiasts paying, in-app revenue to date is probably in the hundreds of dollars (estimate).

Similar apps that do charge are one-time purchases: Deck-Man on iOS at $4.99, and Bionic Tape from Swiss HMZ.swiss at $2.99 on Play (822 installs). This category tends to run on novelty and one-time spending, and rarely grows into a subscription business.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Foldman differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deck-Man (formerly Duo-Man) | iOS | Listed 10-14 | #16 on the US overall Top Paid chart; 178 ratings in the US store | The original; $4.99; connects to Apple Music |
| Foldman open-source version (Devesh Rai) | GitHub APK | 10-21 | 35 stars, 3,266 APK downloads | Same name, different person; connects to YT Music; the press covered this one |
| Bionic Tape(HMZ.swiss) | Android + iOS | Play 10-08 | 822 installs on Play, best Top Paid music category rank #10 | $2.99; connects to streaming; works on any phone |
| deckade (formerly Side A) | Android | 10-26 | 2,739 installs, +2,151 in 7 days | Also a Thai developer; wraps Spotify / TIDAL / YTM playback in a retro skin; Plus $4.99 |
| Tapeman | GitHub | 10-24 | Small | Forked from the open-source Foldman, adds Plex |
| Streaming Cassette, Retro Traveller, ClassiPod, NostalgicPod | Android | June to October | TikTok demos reached tens of thousands to 200k views; NostalgicPod 2,919 installs | Mostly streaming apps with a retro or iPod look; none use the hinge as a control |

(Google Play and App Store data, 11-06.)

deckade, which launched around the same time with entirely different features, also reached 2,700 installs in a week from Thai TikTok. This shows the whole category is riding the new-phone wave. Foldman's details account for its 4.7-star reputation; its launch traffic came mostly from timing, creator videos and the name.

### What users want

There aren't many reviews on Play (11-06 total, 51 reviews), but the gaps are clear:

- "Works well. But please support the Flip too (small vertical foldable)." (Asif Khan, 11-03. Developer replied: it's planned.)

- "The only thing I want is to play songs from my own music server." (Rob, 11-03)

- On TikTok someone posted "FOLDMAN IS TRASH!" (@tech.trx, 783 views), and the same person posted "Deck Man VS FOLDMAN WHO WON?!" (13.5k views).

In one line: "local files only" blocks most people, since most people's music now lives in Spotify and YouTube Music. Small vertical foldables (Z Flip and similar) and NAS / Plex libraries are both still unclaimed.

### If it were you

**Grade C: you can learn from it, but building another foldable cassette player isn't worth it.**

**The verdict** : what you can learn from this wave is the playbook, not the category. At least six lookalikes came out within a month, the original was covered by TechCrunch, revenue is barely visible, and the window follows the novelty of new phones, probably just one or two months.

**Who it suits** : solo developers who can ship a finely crafted small app in two or three weeks, treating it as practice for a "ride the new hardware" launch or as a portfolio piece that makes short videos.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to make money from it; anyone who would just add a retro skin over streaming (there are already several); anyone without a foldable phone who can't film the kind of open-and-close hinge video that sells it.

**How to do it** : if you do build in this category, skip the big foldable version and go after what Foldman got wrong:

- a cover-screen version for small vertical foldables (Z Flip and similar), which reviewers are already asking for;

- Plex / Jellyfin / own NAS library integration, for audiophiles with large local music collections (Tapeman has started this);

- a different "object": CD players, MiniDisc, music boxes, film cameras. The developer is already expanding horizontally into a series.

The playbook itself is worth studying: when new hardware launches, one platform gets a viral demo, and you ship the version for another platform within two or three weeks. Name it "device + use" so it's easy to remember and search. Make the feel (sound, vibration, wear) the selling point, something you can show clearly in 15 seconds.

**How to get users** : film the demo video before you list the app. Foldman's first video came out almost a month before its listing and was reshared by a Thai tech account to 250k views. Then find creators whose main audience is owners of this new phone and have them film it themselves. Don't count on the press; these articles usually cover the earliest open-source demo.

**When to move** : if you want to build the foldable or library version, aim to list by mid-December, to catch people who just got new phones for Christmas. After January, the novelty of new phones fades and these videos stop getting views.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

1. Foldman passing 20k installs and charting in any country's music top grossing by late November would show the category's payment and retention are better than expected;

2. Samsung or Apple promoting this kind of app officially at launch events or on store home pages would stretch the window;

3. conversely, if installs for deckade and Bionic Tape stopped by mid-November, then even "building what it got wrong" is already too late.

## Foldman: why the cassette player (app.foldman.deck) took off

> Channel: Google Play · Developer APPxygen (a one-person studio run by Thai indie dev Seree Woradechjamroen) · Store launch 2026-10-24 · Free, no ads, in-app purchase is only "Buy me a coffee" ($0.99–7.49) Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

After Apple released the foldable iPhone Duo, the Duo-Man (Deck-Man) Walkman app, where you open the phone to pick a tape and close it to play, blew up at the end of September. But it's iOS only. Foldman beat everyone to the same idea on the Galaxy Z Fold 8: it first went viral on Thai TikTok and tech media, 10-31 announced a global Google Play release, and 11-01 a US TikTok (377k views, 18.7k likes) carried it out of Thailand. There's also a coincidence: 10-21 someone posted an open-source "Foldman" on GitHub (Devesh Rai), and 9to5Google and Frandroid covered that one, which only ships as an APK and isn't on Play. So anyone searching "Foldman" on Play finds only APPxygen's app, which got the traffic from that coverage for free.

### 1. Data (our googleplay library, as of 2026-11-06)

| Date | Total installs | Added that day | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 2 | – | – |
| 10-30 | 353 | +351 | – |
| 11-02 | 849 | +496 | – |
| 11-03 | 2,208 | +1,359 | 26 |
| 11-05 | 4,134 | +1,926 | 44 |
| 11-06 | 4,134 | 0 (Play install counts update a day late) | 50 |

- 7 days of new installs: 3,781. AppBrain 11-01 logged 760 installs, while the store page now shows "1K+", 4.7 stars, and 53 reviews.

- Chart (chart_rank, Music & Audio category, Top Free): 10-29 to 11-02 it only charted in the Thailand store (#142–#182). From 11-02 it expanded to the UAE and South Korea stores, and on 11-03 it reached 10 stores in a single day (best: #71 in the Singapore store). On 11-04 it hit 15 stores (#66 in the UK store, #68 in Singapore, #147 in the US store), and on 11-05 it reached #64 in the UK store. 11-06 it pulled back to 12 stores (#84 in the UK store).

- The path is clear: **Thailand first, 11-01, then going global** . This lines up with the TikTok timeline below.

- The same developer also has Foldman - CD player (com.appxygen.foldman.cd, 469 installs) and AP-7 Field Recorder, both launched in late October, with small volume.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Foldman |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Duo-Man / Deck-Man** (Vidit Bhargava,Squircle Apps) | iOS(iPhone Duo) | 9-28 went viral, on the App Store 10-14, $4.99 | #16 overall Top Paid in the US store, #1 in Music Top Paid, 178 US ratings, +68 over the last 7 days (appstore library) | It invented the concept; it's iOS only and paid. Foldman is the free Android version, and its store page and website both say "Inspired by Duo-Man". |
| **Foldman (open-source version, Devesh Rai)** | Android APK, open-sourced on GitHub (Apache 2.0) | 2026-10-21 | GitHub 35 stars, 6 forks; covered by 9to5Google, Frandroid, Phonandroid, SammyFans, antihype, and others | Shares the name with APPxygen's Foldman but is a different person's project; supports YT Music, Apple Music, and local files; not on Play, install by APK only |
| **Bionic Tape** (HMZ.swiss) | iOS + Android | Play 10-08,iOS 10-15 | 822 Play installs, $2.99, best rank #10 in the US Music Top Paid chart; almost no iOS volume | Paid; can use playlists and runs on any phone; missed the media wave |
| **Tapedeck** (Zedge) | Android | 2026-09-11 | 29,552 installs, +6,282 in 7 days | Big-company ordinary tape-style players that don't rely on the hinge gimmick |
| iPod-style apps like **ClassiPod** | Android | 2026-08 | TikTok videos at the 200k-view level (@cj.filmed.it, @allthingsteek) | Same nostalgic "Z Fold 8 cover-screen player" appeal, but imitating the iPod rather than a tape deck |
| Long-running tape-skin players like Casse-o-player, Magnetola, Tape Cassette | Both platforms | 2012–2020 | Small | Just a reskin, unrelated to the fold-and-open mechanic |

Takeaway: "tape-skin players" have existed for ages, and plenty of people have made them. **"Using the hinge as the switch" is the new mechanic Duo-Man pioneered at the end of September** . On Android, three apps are competing for that spot: Bionic Tape (paid), the open-source Foldman (not on any store), and APPxygen's Foldman (free, on Play). Of the three, only Foldman is free, on Play, and has a name that's easy to remember.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **TikTok: developer posts + Thai tech media (confirmed)**
    - Developer account @sereeimt has been posting Z Fold 8 demos since 10-02 (6,293 views), and posted "Available today on Google Play Store! #JoinFoldman #APPxygen" on 10-31.
    - 10-10 @flashfly.official posted a review that specifically noted "this app was made by a Thai person"; 10-15 Thailand's top tech outlet @droidsans posted a review (255k views, 10.1k likes). This explains why it only charted in Thailand in its first week.
    - The developer's website includes his first Facebook post (in Thai), which roughly says: "Can't afford an iPhone Duo and Duo-Man? Then use your leftover tokens and a Z Fold 8 to make your own, free to download." It shows the project rode Duo-Man's buzz from the start, and development was AI-assisted.

2. **TikTok: organic spread in English (confirmed; the key to going global)**
    - 11-01 @techdude99___ posted "the app is called foldman for those wondering", 377k views, 18.7k likes, with hashtags #iphoneduo #galaxyzfold8.
    - 11-02 @tech.trx posted a "Deck Man VS FOLDMAN" comparison video (13.5k views); 11-04 @adhdancemom posted "The name of the app is Foldman" (7,361 views); there were also reshares in Arabic (@osama.shehata63) and Indonesian (@biztech.id).
    - Installs rose 496, 1,359, and 1,926 across three observations from 11-02 to 11-05, and the chart spread to Europe and the US starting 11-03, in step with these videos.

3. **Riding media coverage of the same-named open-source project (coverage confirmed; the traffic effect is inferred)**
    - 10-21 to 10-27,9 to 5 Google, Frandroid, Phonandroid, SammyFans, SammyGuru, urban-signal, antihype (Brazil), samsungmagazine.eu, foro3d and others covered "Foldman turns the Z Fold 8 into a Walkman." Most of the coverage was about Devesh Rai's open-source version: 9 to 5 the Google link pointed to a Reddit post that said "supports YT Music, free and open source."
    - The open-source version isn't on Play, so readers searching "Foldman" on Play only find APPxygen. Vietnam's TekCafe even wrote an article clarifying the difference, which shows people really were confusing the two.
    - This coverage wave landed just before the Play release (10-24), which amounted to free pre-launch hype.

4. **Big event: iPhone Duo and Z Fold 8 on sale at the same time, competing head-to-head (confirmed)**
    - TechCrunch called Duo-Man "the first killer app for the iPhone Duo" in 9-28, and PCMag said its video "went viral".
    - In the "iPhone Duo vs Z Fold 8" comparison conversation, Android users wanted a same-style app to show off, and Foldman filled that gap. SammyFans' headline was "iPhone Duo can't run this retro Walkman app like the Galaxy Z Fold 8".

5. **Store search** : the term "foldman" returns only this app on Play. Play links carry the organic parameter `utm_term=foldman cassette player foldable`, which shows organic search traffic coming in. I found no evidence of paid ads (not in the ad libraries either; not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen).

6. **Tactics not observed** : no chart manipulation, review solicitation, or sock-puppet networks were seen. Reviews are full of short comments ("nice retro look"), and the developer replies to every one.

### 4. Why people stay / pay

- **Why people stay** : it's a toy to show off on your phone, and among foldables it's one of the few uses where closing the phone is the point. The details are strong: three hinge states (fully open, half open, closed), key clicks with haptic feedback, tapes that wear and yellow, and finger-drag rewinding. The developer ships updates fast, going from 1.0 to 1.0.11+ in two weeks, adding ordinary bar-phone mode and AUX mode (controlling Spotify and YouTube Music), which answers the biggest complaint, no streaming support.

- **Paying** : barely any money. Since 1.0.11 the only option is a "buy me a coffee" tip, and the website says "If you want to pay, donate to people in need." No ads, no subscription. So what it has produced is volume and attention, not revenue.

### 5. Differentiation

- Compared with Deck-Man: it's **on Android and free** . Deck-Man only works on the iPhone Duo and costs $4.99.

- Compared with Bionic Tape: Foldman is free, has a memorable name (Walkman → Foldman, instantly clear), and rode the social and media wave.

- Compared with the same-named open-source version: **it's on Play** , so there's no install barrier; the open-source version requires sideloading an APK, and Samsung Auto Blocker will block it.

- It has some unique features (three-state hinge, wear, handwritten labels, Thai support, a sister CD player app), but those aren't why users come. Users come for "Duo-Man on the Z Fold 8".

- **Is that why it took off?** : partly, but the key was launching free on Play first, in the gap between big events, plus a memorable name and traffic from same-named coverage. The product's details explain the high rating (4.7) and easy-to-shoot videos, but not where the users came from.

### 6. How many people know about it

- It's circulating in niche circles. The Duo-Man side has already been written up by TechCrunch and PCMag, so it's big news. The Foldman name has also been covered by 9to5Google and others, but most of that coverage is about the open-source version. The APPxygen version itself has only shown up on Thai TikTok and tech media, a few English TikToks, TekCafe, and AppBrain. There's no revenue and none publicly disclosed.

- Copycats: this whole category is a copycat wave spawned by Duo-Man, and Android already has two similar apps, Bionic Tape and the open-source Foldman. The developer is also copying their own formula (Foldman CD).

### 7. What to borrow

- **When new hardware launches and a hit app exists on only one platform, quickly ship a free version on the other** . The iPhone Duo versus the Z Fold 8 is this year's big hardware story, and whoever launches first on Android catches the "Android can do this too" comparison traffic.

- **Pick a name people get instantly** : Walkman → Duo-Man → Foldman.

- **Validate in your home market first with TikTok and tech media, then go global** . The Thai droidsans review brought the early reviews and chart positions.

- **Publicly credit your inspiration** , which fends off some of the "copycat" criticism.

- If you're thinking of copying it: the window is short (a month or two), and the ceiling is capped by the number of foldable users. Reach can hit thousands to tens of thousands, revenue is close to zero, so it's best for a solo studio to build a reputation.

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether 11-01's 377k-view TikTok was organic or sponsored hasn't been verified.

- How much traffic the 9to5Google coverage actually sent APPxygen has no data behind it. I couldn't find the original of Seree's Facebook post or its exact date (the earliest TikTok demo was already up by 10-02).

- Not sure about retention. Also don't know how many of the users came in after it started working on regular slab phones, not just foldables.

- In-app purchase revenue is close to zero, but I haven't verified it.
