Build an Android version of an iOS hit and raise 7 BookTok sock-puppet accounts: how BookZEN got 13k installs

What it is A reading-log app: point the camera at a book and turn it, and that book's spine and cover go onto a 3D bookshelf you can decorate yourself. The free plan holds 5 books; more than that requires a subscription.

Why it took off When the original SlowRead was iPhone-only, BookZEN launched on Android first. It then used about 7 TikTok sock-puppet accounts to post daily shelf screen recordings and ride trending book tags, targeting the UK mainly.

CHow you could copy it Stop making bookshelf apps just to copy this one. Copy the method instead: find new iOS-only hits and ship the Android version first (write your own name and copy), then run a set of vertical-community personas and test markets by country.

Grade C: the playbook is worth learning, but the platform gap it relied on has closed. The original is now on Android with more than twice its volume, and there are over a dozen similar bookshelf apps already, so following this category now isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

BookZEN is a reading-log app that photographs the spine of your book and puts it on a 3D bookshelf you decorate yourself. On Google Play it grew 51% in 7 days, and it has hovered around #30 on the UK Books free chart. The idea isn't its own. It built an Android version of SlowRead, a new iOS hit, and in the two-plus months before the original shipped on Android it grew installs using a group of TikTok accounts posing as BookTok girls. The original is now on Android too, with more than twice its scale. Below is how the playbook worked and how much room is left for you.

A package that was taken down within 9 days

On Aug 17, 2026, an app called "SlowRead - Bookshelf & TBR" was pulled from Google Play. It had been live for 9 days and got 1,200 installs. The developer was InnoWave SRL of Chișinău, Moldova, and the package name was misspelled by one letter (app.innovawe.slowread). The problem is that the name SlowRead wasn't theirs: the real SlowRead is an indie app by Adrian Martinez Moreno, released on iOS in Jul 4, iPhone only at the time.

The next day, InnoWave relisted under a new package name, app.innowave.readlogs, as "SlowReader Bookshelf". By early October it was renamed BookZEN, with a landing page whose subtitle read "made for BookTok". Google never explained the takedown, and from outside it's unclear whether it was a counterfeit complaint or the developer pulled it.

Put the two listings side by side and you can see who copied whom. SlowRead's site says "photograph the spine of your own copy", "the one with the sprayed edges", "Bring your Goodreads"; BookZEN's store page says "your copy is on the shelf: its cover, spine, page edges — sprayed edges too" and "Bring your whole Goodreads library". The reading-timer line "pause for the kettle" (pause to boil the kettle) appears on both.

One video with 167k views and 503 likes

In Oct 2, TikTok account @sophia_wagner26 posted a screen recording of a bookshelf app with the caption "This is the best found as a Reader 🥹📚😍". The video got 167k views. The account had only 142 followers but had posted 382 videos, and its display name was simply "BookZEN Bookshelf App".

It isn't a one-off. At least 7 accounts were pushing BookZEN, each with fewer than 200 followers, all faceless "BookTok girl" personas: @bookzen.bookshelf posted "Looking for perfect covers only" in Oct 28 and got 113k views; @bookzen_bookshelf targeted German with #bücherregal; @cleo.booktok targeted the Australian tag, and @dakota.jordan51 targeted the US tag. The accounts reused the same copy, and "Do Not show this app to BookTOK bestie 😁📚🥹" was posted by at least three of them. The tags rode the season's trending books: Fourth Wing, ACOTAR, Sarah J. Maas, plus #booktokuk.

One figure doesn't add up: 167k views with only 503 likes gives a like rate of 0.3%, while organic hits usually land between 2% and 10%. It may have been boosted with Spark Ads, or it may just have been pushed by the recommendation pool, unverified. Another video with 113k views got 1,868 likes, a much more normal ratio.

About 7 new installs over the last 4,542 days, roughly 500 to 650 a day. Real growth started in late September, which lines up with when the TikTok accounts began posting on Sep 22. The Play page has a 4.7 rating from 205 reviews.

The charts show where it's focused: on the UK "Books & Reference" free chart it has sat between #27 and #37, the US has bounced between #77 and #142, and Italy and France only started charting in November. The videos consistently use #booktokuk, and the UK is its strongest market, which matches.

The iOS version launched in Sep 8, and as of today the US store has only 15 ratings. On iPhone the original and competitors are too crowded, so nearly all its volume is on Android.

The product sells "showing off your shelf"

The store page states the pitch clearly: "Turn a book in front of the camera once, and your copy is on the shelf". Turn the book once in front of the camera and your edition's cover, spine, page edges and back go onto the shelf at their real height and thickness. Shelves can be styled with wood grain, rooms, lighting and seasonal decor, and a series auto-groups together, with the next book "right there to add, or to wish for".

Every feature is designed to be filmed and shared. BookTok users already love showing off physical shelves and sprayed edges, so a screenshot of a decorated virtual shelf is ready-made video material. SlowRead's site has a line, "Most people open it when they are not reading", and BookZEN copied that whole read on the product.

Its differences from the original come down to three things: it shipped on Android two months earlier; it deliberately has no accounts, no sign-in and no social feed ("no account, no sign-in, no social feed", while SlowRead's autumn update added reading clubs); and it adds EPUB, audiobook playback and white-noise sounds like rain, fireplace and café.

Where the money comes from

The free version holds only 5 books, and wishlist items don't count. Beyond 5 books you have to buy Pro: weekly, annual or lifetime, with in-app prices of $4.99 to $79.99. For a BookTok user, 5 books can be used up in a single afternoon.

The detail that wishlist items don't use up the quota is worth noting. The store page says outright: "Share your wishlist before a birthday — friends get exactly the right edition": send your wishlist to friends before a birthday so they buy the right edition. Sharing this link costs nothing, so the paywall doesn't block spread.

Revenue isn't public. It ranks #54 on the UK top-grossing category chart and #89 in the US, which means people are paying, but the scale is small (inferred).

Treat the early reviews with caution. The first batch of five-star reviews appeared in early September and was very generic, for example one from Sep 8: "Overall great concept and an equally great app". The developer replied the same day with "It is delightful to hear such positive words", which looks like mutual reviews or reviews from friends and family (inferred). It also posted a self-promotion thread on Reddit's r/droidappshowcase, offering "Free Lifetime Premium" in exchange for installs and reviews.

Who it's competing with

In 2026, "pretty bookshelf app" became a trend on BookTok, and the space is already crowded:

CompetitorsScaleCompared with BookZEN

BooklyAndroid 669k installsAn established stats-focused app that added a shelf feature in October; one video with 710k views
BookologyiOS US store 966 ratingsAn iOS bookshelf with widgets, no Android version
Shelfy, Embertale, Readista, BookTrace, Dog Ear and othersMostly iOS, launched in 2026The same "real-spine bookshelf" idea has videos on TikTok (one BookTrace video with 176k views)

Established products like Goodreads (32.6M installs on Play) and StoryGraph only have lists and stats, with no visual shelf. BookZEN's pitch is to take users from them: one @sophia_wagner26 video is captioned "No, Goodreads can't do this".

How many people know about it

Very few. No media coverage; in the last 60 days, searching "BookZEN" on X returned 0 posts; revenue isn't public; what's visible is its own TikTok sock-puppet accounts and a Reddit self-promo thread. Don't read this as an opportunity, though: the product itself is unknown, and the "3D bookshelf" category it sits in is something everyone on BookTok is already doing.

If it were you

Verdict: learn the playbook, skip the category. BookZEN took off thanks to two things: the window when the original was iOS-only, and a near-free set of TikTok sock-puppet accounts. The first is gone. SlowRead went to Android in Oct 1 and hit 30k installs within a month; Bookly, an older product with 660k installs, has also added shelves. Launching another 3D bookshelf app now means being one of a dozen-plus entrants.

Who it suits: small app factories that can quickly port new iOS hits to Android and already run a TikTok sock-puppet network. What's worth copying is the method, not this app.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers hoping to differentiate with "a prettier bookshelf". SlowRead, Bookology, Shelfy and Yuuna all have this, and users can't tell them apart.

How to do it: Watch the iOS category free charts for new, iPhone-only apps from solo developers that show up within 2 to 3 months. These devs usually take months to ship an Android version (SlowRead took nearly three). When you build the Android version, write your own name and copy: BookZEN's first package was pulled after 9 days, and copy that's sentence-for-sentence the same as the original is a liability too. For pricing, copy the original's structure: a very low free allowance, weekly / yearly / lifetime tiers, and sharing features kept outside the paywall.

How to get users: Run 5 to 7 niche persona accounts that post daily faceless screen recordings, tag them with this season's hot titles, and split-test by country tags (#booktokuk, #bücherregal). Double down on whichever store charts. BookZEN posted 382 videos from one account, the best getting 167k views, and we found no sign of creator seeding.

When to move: Platform gaps last a few months, from the original's iOS launch until its creator ships Android. BookZEN's window was August to October, about two and a half months. When you find the next gap, aim to ship within 4 to 6 weeks.

Signs you've misread it: ① If BookZEN's daily installs stay above 500 after the original ships on Android, and it keeps climbing the Top Grossing chart, then the "no account, no social" angle holds up and there's room for a differentiated follower in this category. ② If instead it drops out of the UK top 50 free chart in December, the clones just rode one window, and they die once the video posting stops.

  • Inferred TikTok paid boost (Spark Ads): 167k views with only 503 likes is an abnormally low like rate, which looks like paid promotion. It doesn't appear in the TikTok European ad library.
  • Inferred Platform gap: Android users searching for bookshelf apps: iOS bookshelf hits like SlowRead had no Android version for 10-01. BookZEN's Play installs (13k) far outnumber its iOS ratings (15). Its title is stuffed with "Bookshelf" and "Tracker".
  • Verified Borrowing the original's name: first listed on Play as "SlowRead - Bookshelf & TBR" (app.innovawe.slowread). It was pulled 08-17 after 9 days and 1.2k installs. It was then reposted under a new package name as "SlowReader Bookshelf" (AppBrain, apkpure).

Bottom line

BookZEN isn't an original category. It's a small app factory in Moldova that copied the new iOS hit SlowRead into an Android version. SlowRead is a book tracker from 2026-07-04 on iOS that builds a 3D bookshelf from a photo of the spines, made by indie dev Adrian Martinez Moreno. InnoWave first listed it on Android under the name "SlowRead" itself, and was pulled 9 days later. It then relaunched under the new package name "SlowReader Bookshelf" and renamed it BookZEN between 9 and October. It rode the Android gap from July to 10-01, when SlowRead was still iOS-only, and pushed traffic with a matrix of about 7 TikTok alt accounts posting "my 3D bookshelf" videos styled as BookTok girls, targeting the UK. The numbers are small: 13k installs in total, +4,542 over the last 7 days, roughly 500–650 a day. The real SlowRead has since come to Android, with 29.8k installs and +8,714 a week, more than double BookZEN. BookZEN got its traction from the gap and the content matrix, not from any differentiation of its own. 10-01

  • Ratings: 124 → 204 (7 days +80), average 4.42 → 4.67. Histogram [1★8, 2★2, 3★2, 4★19, 5★170]. The Play page shows 4.7 reviews and 205 ratings.
  • Charts: UK Books & Reference free chart at #27–#37 the whole time, US free chart at #77–#142. From 11-05 it began charting in Italy (#146–#158) and France (#191–#192). Its best showing was on the Top Grossing chart: #54 in the UK category and #89 in the US category. It also reached #148–#158 on a dozen smaller-country Top Grossing charts, though those small-country category charts are often the same aggregate list, so they're weak signals.
  • AppBrain (data as of 2026-10-09): 5.9k installs at the time, of which 5.2k came in the last 30 days, with 1.4.1,42 ratings at version 4.83. So the real ramp started in mid-September, which lines up with the TikTok network beginning to post videos (9-22).
  • iOS: 15 ratings in the US store (average 4.53), 5 in the UK. appstoretracker logged it reaching #35 on the Hungary Books free chart 11-02. It basically never took off on iOS.
  • Revenue: at a glance, both the US and UK Top Grossing category charts place it only in the dozens to hundred range. That suggests some paying users, but at small scale (inferred, not verified).

2. Origin of the name: first copied SlowRead's name outright, then renamed after the takedown

The copy on the two sides is highly similar. SlowRead's site says "photograph the spine of your own copy", "the one with the sprayed edges", "Bring your Goodreads", "Keep one shelf for the romantasy". BookZEN says "your copy is on the shelf: its cover, spine, page edges — sprayed edges too", "Bring your whole Goodreads library", "Made for readers of romantasy". 4. Where users come from

  1. TikTok burner account network (confirmed, the main channel). TikHub shows at least 7 accounts pushing BookZEN, all under 200 followers, all with a "BookTok girl" persona and faceless screen recordings:
    • @sophia_wagner26 (display name literally "BookZEN Bookshelf App", 142 followers, 382 videos): 10-02 one at 167k views, 9-22 one at 156k, 10-05 one at 111k.
    • @bookzen.bookshelf (162 followers): 10-28 "Looking for perfect covers only" 113k views.
    • @bookzen_bookshelf (179 followers, German #bücherregal tag), @bookzen_bookshelf2 (15 followers), @cleo.booktok (18 followers, Australian tag), @dakota.jordan51 (64 followers, US tag, an old account repurposed), @carla_booktok8 (29 followers, one video at 10-28 35k).
    • The playbook: several accounts copy the same captions ("Do Not show this app to BookTOK bestie" has gone out from at least 3 accounts), multiple posts a day, piggybacking on trending books (Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, ACOTAR, Alchemised, Ana Huang's Twisted series), and a push on #booktokuk. That fits the UK being its strongest market (free chart ranks 27–37).
    • High views, low likes: 167k views with only 503 likes (about 0.3%), where organic hits usually run 2–10%. This could be Spark Ads or boosting, or just a push from the recommendation pool. Unverified. Our TikTok ad library only covers ads served in Europe, and it shows no BookZEN or InnoWave advertiser.
  2. Paid acquisition: no evidence found. Neither the Meta ad library nor the TikTok (Europe) ad library shows BookZEN or InnoWave as advertisers. But it isn't on our tracking list, so no hits doesn't mean no spend.
  3. Reddit self-promotion (confirmed, small scale): r/droidappshowcase has a post, "Bookshelf & TBR - BookZEN → Free Lifetime Premium", offering lifetime premium in exchange for installs and reviews. It also appears in a reading-list thread on r/Zoho.
  4. Store search / empty slot (inferred): Between July and 10-01, Android users saw iOS bookshelf apps like SlowRead on BookTok but couldn't install them. Searching Play for "bookshelf / book tracker / tbr" runs straight into BookZEN. The title stuffs in Bookshelf and Tracker, and the description piles on romantasy, TBR, Goodreads and similar keywords.
  5. Early reviews look fake (inferred): The earliest Play reviews came in the first ten days of September (Mohamed Turky 9-07, Sonic Multani 9-08). They're generic, and the developer replied within minutes, which looks like review swapping or friends-and-family reviews. The landing page's "Rated 4.9 ★ on Google Play" was also taken at the peak.
  6. Press, X, celebrities: none found. x-radar returns 60 posts mentioning "BookZEN" in the last 0 days.

5. Why it took off

  • Timing gap: BookTok made "nice bookshelf apps" popular in 2026, but the new hits at the time (SlowRead, Bookology, Shelfy and others) were iOS-only. BookZEN was one of the first in August to bring spine-photo, customizable shelves to Android. Its Play installs (13k) far outnumber its iOS ratings (15), which suggests it's feeding on the Android gap.
  • Content networks are cheap: about 7 small accounts reposting screen recordings every day, riding BookTok's trending-book tags for reach. The best single video hit 11–170k views, with no creator fees. After the accounts went up, installs climbed from the 9-22 range to over 1k 10.
  • The product fits BookTok's show-off impulse: real spines, sprayed edges, romantasy / dark romance decor sets, and shareable shelf cards all make for good video. The insight "Most people open it when they are not reading" (SlowRead's own site copy) is lifted wholesale.
  • A hard 5-book cap pushes users to pay: users hit 5 books fast and then need Pro, with a lifetime tier too. It reached the top 100 of the UK and US Books category charts.

6. Differentiation

Against list-based or stat-based trackers like Goodreads and StoryGraph, BookZEN's pitch is "real spines of your own books on a 3D shelf in a room you decorated," plus a white-noise reading timer, with no account and no social feed. But that idea isn't its own: SlowRead did it first, and Bookology, Shelfy and Yuuna's newer versions do it too. Compared to SlowRead, it really differs in three ways: (1) it reached Android about two months earlier; (2) no account, no social (SlowRead added clubs in its autumn release); (3) EPUB / audiobook reading and white noise. So differentiation didn't cause its run. The platform gap plus a distribution playbook did. Real SlowRead came to Android in October, and Bookly added a shelf too, so the gap is already closing.

7. Visibility

Barely anyone knows about it yet. No public revenue, no press, 0 X posts discussing it, and the only visible footprint is its own TikTok accounts and the Reddit self-promo. But the "3D bookshelf book tracker" category itself is already crowded on BookTok.

8. What others can learn

  • When an iOS app breaks out, ship the Android version first and take the platform gap. But don't use the original name: the first build was taken down within 9 days.
  • Run a burner-account network posting screen recordings as "real users," ride the trending-book and trending-work tags on vertical communities, and test markets separately using country tags (#booktokuk, #bücherregal).
  • Keep the free allowance very low (5 books), with weekly / yearly / lifetime tiers. Wishlists shouldn't count against the allowance, so the "share with a friend as a gift" spread isn't blocked.

9. Still unclear

  • Why the first build was taken down (IP complaint, impersonation, or the developer pulled it).
  • Whether the TikTok videos were boosted with paid money (Spark Ads), and whether it ran ads in the US (our library only covers Europe).
  • Whether the @slowread.eng TikTok account (started posting "How to scan a book" in late July, best video 120k views) belongs to real SlowRead or to InnoWave. Timing points to real SlowRead, unverified.
  • Actual revenue and paying conversion rate, and why the iOS version didn't take off (probably too many original and competing iOS apps).
