A yarn box with an app attached: a one-person crochet business in Istanbul that hasn't broken out yet, but the playbook is worth copying
What it is A Turkish crochet-doll learning app bundled with its own online shop's yarn kits: a QR code in the box unlocks the videos, and the app sells subscriptions and AI help on top.
Why it's getting attention It isn't really yet: under two months and just over 6,000 installs, mostly from ranking in the top 6 of Turkish-language store search and making the top 100 of the Turkey lifestyle Top Free chart. No viral moment or word-of-mouth spread.
CHow you could follow it If you already sell handmade kits in a non-English market, put a QR card in the box, route buyers into an app that only does scan-to-unlock, step-by-step video, and photo-based Q&A, then push subscriptions gradually.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-11 · 11-07 installs 5,849
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Gökalp Gezer of Istanbul packs yarn, a crochet hook, and a QR card into one box: scan it and you get the tutorial video for that one design, permanently. To see every design and use the AI Q&A, you pay a subscription. Live for 8 weeks, it has 5,849 installs on Google Play and has only charted in the Turkey lifestyle Top Free chart, reaching the top 100. It's small. Below: what it's actually doing, where the traffic comes from, who it competes with, and whether this "physical kit + app" playbook can work in another market.
One box, one card
KnitHelp's "About us" page opens like this: the founder loves knitting and noticed many people around him say "I'm bad with my hands, I'll never learn" before they've even touched yarn. He thinks the problem isn't clumsiness but that text-and-diagram instructions are hard to follow, you lose count of rows mid-project, and when you get stuck there's nobody to ask. One day he gave a friend a small kit he'd put together, along with a patiently filmed video, and the friend finished a finished piece from start to finish without asking anyone for help. That's where the idea came from: "Put the materials and the lesson in the same box."
The official site's seller info lists Gökalp Gezer, based in Üsküdar, Istanbul, registered under a personal tax ID. His personal page says he has been a solo developer "since 2026," and that he previously made a block-matching puzzle game called Pastel Pop. KnitHelp is credited to Tiny Mood Games on Google Play, launched Sep 2026 11, and launched on iOS Sep 16.
What it actually sells: two things
The first is physical goods, shipped only within Turkey. knithelp.app is a full online shop: 11-06 amigurumi (crochet doll) kits are on sale, three designs (pearl mermaid, roaring dinosaur, sly fox) at a list price of ₺550, now ₺499.90, with yarn and hook included so you don't need to buy anything else. 7 more are marked "coming soon": bee, sleepy bear, chick, capybara, puppy, penguin, bunny. It also sells 500 g skeins of acrylic yarn for ₺200 each, in twenty-some colors. Payments via iyzico, shipping via DHL, free shipping over ₺999, same-day dispatch for orders placed before 4 pm on weekdays, and a 14-day no-questions return policy.
The second is an app subscription. On the card in the box, tap "Scan" under "My Library" in the app and that design's videos are permanently tied to your account, no subscription needed. During scanning the app immediately prompts you to link an Apple or Google account, otherwise your videos are lost if you change phones. To see every design, you need a subscription: the in-app purchase price on Play is $4.09–28.99, billed monthly or yearly, with a 7-day free trial. The subscription also includes two AI features: describe something or upload a photo and it generates a chart (it calculates stitch counts based on your yarn weight), and a "crochet helper" where you photograph a mistake and it tells you what went wrong and which technique video to watch. "Ask about this round" automatically includes the chart and row you're currently viewing.
The video approach is practical: each design is cut into short segments you can pause, rewind, and slow down, with subtitles, and in full-screen landscape the crochet work fills the screen. Each basic technique (magic ring, single crochet, invisible decrease, popcorn stitch, etc.) gets its own video. The store listing says technique videos are free, but the official FAQ says they require a subscription. The two statements conflict, so go by the actual app.
Has it really taken off? Not yet
Let's get the numbers straight first, so "breaking out" doesn't mislead you:
| Date | Google Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 10-10 | 232 |
| 10-12 | 785 |
| 10-21 | 2,494 |
| 10-26 | 3,868 |
| 11-02 | 5,376 |
| 11-06 | 5,849 |
The October figures for these few days are third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy); the November figures come from Play's public data. Over the last 7 days it added 1,980, averaging two or three hundred a day. October 11 and 12 saw a single jump, from 232 to 785. The reason is unclear: it may have started running ads, or its store search ranking may have risen. Neither has been verified.
On the charts, it has only made the Turkey Google Play lifestyle Top Free chart: 10-29 #74, 11-02 #117, 11-06 #96. That bar is low; a few hundred installs a day is enough to reach the top 100. It has never charted in any country's Top Grossing. On iOS in early November it had only 10 ratings (4.9 stars); on Play there's no rating data and no reviews to be found. No press coverage, no founder posting revenue, and no discussion on X.
So the accurate summary is: this is a two-month-old product with a complete model, but its volume hasn't taken off. What's worth studying is its playbook, not its curve.
Where users come from
Four routes are visible, and probably only the first is really working:
- Turkish-language store search. Searching "amigurumi" or "örgü" (Turkish for knitting/crochet) in the Google Play Turkey store, it ranked #6 in early November. Most of the results above it are English-language global apps with mere Turkish translations; a native Turkish app with Turkish-subtitled videos can easily break into the top spots. This is currently its main source of volume (my inference, based on search ranking and charting only in Turkey).
- Instagram @knithelp.app. 1,240 followers, following 0 accounts, bio reads "7-day free trial", which looks like an ad landing page; 10-29 and 11-04 are still posting new content. Whether it's running Meta ads is unverified.
- Online store cross-sell. Buyers of the kit will definitely install the App via the QR code, and they're exactly the people who'd try a subscription. But the store only sells 3 kit(s), so this channel won't be big.
- TikTok @knithelp.app. 145 followers, 34 videos, 10-27 posted 7 videos in one day, 6 to 359 views per video. Negligible.
10-27's 1.1.0 release switched the UI to 9 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Hindi, Arabic, Persian, Turkish), and the Play listing name changed from the Turkish "KnitHelp: Örgü ve Amigurumi" to English. Looks like prep for going global, but as of 11-06 it's only charted in Turkey.
Who it's competing with
It's really two proven businesses stacked together, and both sides have much bigger players:
| Competitors | What it is | Scale | How KnitHelp differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Woobles (US) | Beginner crochet kits + card-unlocked videos | Pitched on Shark Tank, claims $5.3M in revenue; 1.43M YouTube subscribers | The model prototype, but no subscription App and no AI |
| The Gurumi, The Gookie (Turkey) | Local amigurumi kits + videos | The Gurumi calls itself "Turkey's #1", backed by a stationery shop open for 1990 years; The Gookie has wholesale and physical stores, and is sold on Amazon US | Direct local competitors in Turkey, no App |
| YarnPal(PIXELCELL) | AI crochet learning App, subscription | 4.82M installs on Play, +7k over 91 days; #8 on France's Lifestyle Top Grossing; third-party estimates of several hundred thousand USD per month | Pure App, global paid acquisition, no physical goods |
| LoopPal, Crochet for Beginners (SaverHub), etc. | Copycats of YarnPal | SaverHub's app launched almost the same day as KnitHelp; 206k installs in two months, 35 times KnitHelp's | Pure paid-acquisition play |
| My Row Counter, knitCompanion, etc. | Row counters, PDF pattern tools | Hundreds of thousands to over a million installs | Utilities, no teaching |
(Play data as of early November; The Woobles' and YarnPal's revenue are self-reported or third-party estimates.)
Two takeaways. First, the "AI crochet App" lane is already crowded: after YarnPal took off, a pile of same-named, same-format Apps are buying installs, and SaverHub's, launched at the same time, is 35 times bigger, which shows pure App plays come down to ad budget. Second, the "kit + video" model has been run locally in Turkey for years; KnitHelp isn't the first to educate this market. What it uniquely does is combine the two. As far as we can tell, no one else offers kits, QR unlocking, subscriptions and AI Q&A together.
Can this playbook work elsewhere?
Three things are worth borrowing, none of them hard:
- Put a card in the physical product that permanently ties the content to an account. A one-off product sale doubles as the sign-up and subscription-trial funnel for the App, with acquisition cost covered by the kit's gross margin. Fits any handcraft that needs step-by-step video: crochet, embroidery, bead art, models, LEGO-style builds, baking kits.
- Go native in non-English markets. Global crochet Apps are only machine-translated in Turkish search, and one person filming videos in their native language can rank in the top 6. This works in any language where big English Apps have only translated.
- Give AI Q&A context. "Ask about this row" automatically carries the current diagram and row count, which is far more useful than making users describe their problem in a generic chat box.
The hard parts are also clear: this is a physical-goods business. Choosing yarn, packing kits, filming videos, stocking inventory, shipping, and handling returns; every pattern is a full shoot. KnitHelp has only 3 kits after two months, so supply is the bottleneck for a solo operator. Whether subscribers actually pay is completely invisible from the outside.
If it were you
C: Worth learning from, not worth copying as-is. It hasn't proven this model can scale, the pure-App side is already a paid-acquisition red ocean, and the physical side needs supply chain and filming skill.
Who it's for: someone already selling handcraft kits in a non-English country, or a handcraft creator. If you already have product, followers, and the ability to shoot tutorial videos, and only lack an App to keep buyers coming back and paying, then adding "QR code in the box + subscription" is cheap.
Who it's not for: indie developers who only write code and have never touched physical goods (you'll get stuck on fulfillment and video shoots); anyone wanting a pure AI crochet App (YarnPal and a crowd of copycats are buying installs, and you can't outspend them); anyone wanting to sell kits in English markets (The Woobles is already at several million dollars).
How to do it: pick a non-English market where a kit brand already exists but there's no good App, and choose a handcraft that beginners can't finish in one go (crochet and embroidery both fit). Start with 3–5 kit designs and step-by-step videos; the App only needs to do three things: scan-to-unlock, step-by-step video, and photo-based questions. Push the subscription only once you have 20 to 30 designs.
How to acquire users: the kit is itself the channel. Post "first finished project, zero experience" videos on Instagram and TikTok and link to the store; buyers scan the code into the App, and the App then recommends the next design. In App store search, claim native-language keywords (like KnitHelp does with "amigurumi" and "örgü").
When to get in before: handcraft kits peak around year-end gifting, so to catch this year you'd need inventory ready by early December; otherwise plan around next year's Mother's Day and year-end.
What would mean you got it wrong: ① by late December KnitHelp charts in countries beyond Turkey, or enters any Turkish top chart, which would show the scan + subscription layer is actually converting and worth scaling up; ② conversely, if the 7 "coming soon" designs still aren't out by year-end, the kit leg hasn't taken off and it degrades into just another crochet learning App; ③ if a big App like YarnPal starts selling physical kits, the combination has been taken by the big players.

Why did KnitHelp: Crochet & Amigurumi (app.knithelp.knithelp) break out?
Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our googleplay library (daily since 2026-10-29), app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimates), store listings, the official site knithelp.app, Instagram / TikTok profiles, and search results.
Bottom line
It hasn't actually broken out yet. About 8 weeks since launch, 5,849 cumulative installs on Google Play worldwide, 150–400 per day, bouncing between #74 and #117 on Turkey's LIFESTYLE Top Free chart. What's worth watching isn't the growth but the model: it bundles a physical yarn kit (₺499–550) with the App, where the QR code in the box unlocks that design's videos for life, and the App then sells a subscription (all diagrams + AI-generated diagrams + photo-based Q&A). It's The Woobles' model (US, pitched on Shark Tank, 1.43M YouTube subscribers), layered with AI crochet subscription Apps like YarnPal, and run locally in Turkey. Where the traffic comes from: the visible evidence is mainly Turkish Play Store search ("amigurumi" and "örgü" rank #6) plus an Instagram account with 1,240 followers; organic content has almost no reach.

Daily increments: 10-11 and 10-12 each added about 276 (jumping from 232 to 785), after which it mostly sits between 100–400 per day, with no big spikes. The cause of the jump on 10-11 hasn't been confirmed (could be paid ads, or a rise in store search placement; unverified).
2. What it actually is (two layers of monetization)
- Physical e-commerce (Turkey only): knithelp.app is a full standalone store: Amigurumi kits (mermaid / dinosaur / fox, list price ₺550, sale price ₺499.90, plus 7 "coming soon" designs), Özel Yarns acrylic yarn 500g ₺200; paid via iyzico, shipped via DHL eCommerce, free shipping over ₺999, 14-day no-questions returns.
- QR unlock: the box comes with a QR card. Scan it in the app's "My Library" and that title's videos are yours for life, tied to your account. No subscription needed.
- App subscription: videos for all designs + row-by-row text charts with row tracking, "describe or photograph to generate a chart" (stitch counts calculated from yarn weight), and a "crochet helper" (take a photo and describe the problem; the AI points out the mistake and gives a technique video; "ask about this row" automatically includes the current chart and row number). Basic technique videos are free and ad-free.
- Founder story (from the official site): they knit themselves, and noticed people around them giving up because "written charts are unreadable and there's no one to ask when stuck"; they gave a friend a small kit plus self-shot videos, and the friend finished their first project independently. Hence "put materials and teaching in the same box."
3. Competitors
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from KnitHelp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YarnPal - Crochet for Beginner(PIXELCELL) | Android / iOS | 2025-08(Play) | Play 4.82M installs, 7 days +91k; #8 on the France LIFESTYLE Top Grossing chart; third-party estimates of $5–600k monthly revenue | Pure app, AI charts, global paid acquisition; doesn't sell physical goods, no localized e-commerce |
| LoopPal - Crochet for Beginner(GAMEPEAK) | Android | 2026-03 | 746k installs, 7 days +52k | A follower of YarnPal, also a pure-app subscription |
| Crochet for Beginners: Learn(SaverHub) | Android | 2026-09-09 | 206k installs, 7 days +84k | Launched on almost the same day as KnitHelp, 35× its scale over two months: a pure paid-acquisition play |
| Learn Crochet & Knitting(Smart AI Utility Apps) | Android | 2026-08 | 323k, +38k in 7 days | Same as above |
| My Row Counter / Crochet Patterns & Row Counter / knitCompanion | Android / iOS | 2016–2020 | 270k–1.26M | Tool-based (row counters, PDF charts), no teaching |
| The Woobles | Web store + video site (learn.thewoobles.com) | About 2020 | Appeared on Shark Tank (claims to have grown from $200 to $5.3M), YouTube 1.43M subscribers, claims 500k people have learned | The prototype of the KnitHelp model: kits + a code / QR on the card to unlock videos; but no subscription app and no AI |
| The Gurumi(thegurumi.com) | Turkish online shop | Not verified | Calls itself "Turkey's #1 Amigurumi Kit"; behind it is Atlas Kırtasiye, which has been operating for 1990 years | Local kits + video tutorials, no app, no subscription |
| The Gookie(thegookie.com) | Turkish online shop + Amazon US | Not verified | Instagram: "Turkey's most innovative craft brand", with wholesale and physical retail points, selling on Amazon US | Same as above, wider channel reach, no app |
| Chart platforms like Ribblr and Amigurumi World | Android / iOS | Years | Turkish "amigurumi" search results rank above KnitHelp | Chart market, doesn't sell physical goods |
Verdict: "kit + video" already has The Gurumi and The Gookie in Turkey; "AI crochet subscription app" has YarnPal and a crowd of followers globally. KnitHelp is the only one (within what we could find) combining the two, but both sides already have established major players.
4. Where users came from (growth tactics)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish Play Store search | Searching "amigurumi" and "örgü" with gl=tr, KnitHelp ranks #6 on both; only charted on the Turkey LIFESTYLE Top Free chart | Confirmed (search placement comes from a single scrape, not a Turkish IP, so there's some bias) |
| Instagram @knithelp.app | 1,240 followers, following 0, bio "7-day free trial", with new posts on 10-29 and 11-04; few followers and a landing-page-style bio, possibly running Meta ads | Account confirmed; whether ads are running is unverified (our Meta ad library only tracks a keyword list and didn't capture it; the Ad Library web page can't be scraped) |
| TikTok @knithelp.app | 145 followers, 34 videos, 810 total likes; on 10-27 they posted 7 videos in one day, with 6–359 views per video | Confirmed: organic traffic can be ignored |
| Official site / e-commerce referrals | The official site FAQ guides buyers to install the app and scan the QR; but the store only sells 3 kits + yarn, so the volume can't be large | Mechanism confirmed, scale unknown |
| X / media / creators | x-radar search for "knithelp" returns 0 results; search engines found no press coverage or creator reviews | Confirmed: none |
| Multi-language market expansion (in progress) | 10-27's 1.1.0 added 9 languages including Arabic, Persian, and Hindi, and the Play title switched to English; but n_countries_now = 1, other countries haven't charted yet | Action confirmed, results not yet visible |
5. Why it can (still) grow
- Low local keyword competition in Turkish: most Turkish-language results for "amigurumi / örgü" are dominated by global English apps, so a native Turkish app with Turkish-subtitled videos can easily rank in the top 6, and can also break into the top 100 of the LIFESTYLE Top Free chart (that chart has a low bar, a few hundred installs a day is enough).
- Crochet has a deep base in Turkey ("watching grandma knit" is the copy in its posts), and the amigurumi kit market has already been educated by The Gurumi and The Gookie, so KnitHelp is riding existing demand.
- Physical kits bring high-intent users to the app: people who buy a ₺500 kit will install the app to scan the code, and they're a natural audience for the trial subscription. But the store currently has only 3 kits, so this channel probably contributes very little volume.
- 150–400 installs per day, zero reviews (no rating data on Play), and only 10 ratings on iOS, suggesting there's no word-of-mouth spread yet.
6. Differentiation
Yes, but it's not the reason it's growing now. The differentiation is four things combined: physical kits + QR permanent unlock + app subscription + AI Q&A:
- Against pure-app players like YarnPal: it adds physical goods and "real person, step-by-step video," so users can finish a finished piece on their first try; AI charts and photo-based troubleshooting are followers' moves, not leads.
- Against kit brands like The Woobles / The Gurumi / The Gookie: it adds an app that can keep charging (subscription), rather than one-time product sales.
Right now the volume (5.8k) comes mostly from Turkish-language store search, and it has little to do with the differentiation; the differentiation only shows up once "kit sales pick up → high-conversion subscribers" happens, and there is no evidence of that yet.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No press coverage, no founder posting revenue, 0 X posts discussing it, TikTok 145 followers; not on revenue leaderboards like TrustMRR.
- Copycats: none (KnitHelp is closer to a Turkish-market version of Woobles + YarnPal).
8. What others can learn
- Physical + digital binding: the box includes a QR card that scans to permanently attach the content to an account, turning that account into the entry point for a subscription trial, using one-time physical sales to lower app acquisition costs. Fits any hands-on category that needs step-by-step video, like crafts, LEGO, models, or baking.
- Build native-language versions for non-English markets: global AI crochet apps are only machine-translated in Turkish search, so native-language video can take top search spots for little money.
- Make the AI feature "contextual Q&A": "ask about this round" automatically includes the current diagram and round count, which is more useful than a generic chat.
9. Uncertain
- Whether they run Meta / Google ads: the Instagram format looks similar, but there is no ad library evidence; the cause of the jump on 10-11 is unknown.
- Subscription conversion and kit sales: there is no revenue data at all; the IAP prices of $4.09–28.99 only show pricing, not that anyone pays, and it has never charted in Top Grossing.
- The recall card says the developer also has a Turkish coffee fortune-telling app called "Bacıım", which I could not verify this time; what I could find is the casual game Pastel Pop.
- Whether the multi-language expansion (1.1.0) can be copied in Arabic / Hindi markets needs two to four more weeks of n_countries data and per-country charts.
