Senior Calendar (Japan store title シニアカレンダー) · monocots

# Identical name, zero ads: how a senior calendar gets 100 installs a day in Japan

**What it is** A big-text calendar for seniors: font size is freely adjustable, it reads out your schedule, requires no sign-up, and has no ads.

**Why it took off** Its Japan-store title is exactly the same as a senior calendar a Japanese company released a year earlier. When Japanese users search for that phrase on Play, both show up. The original has ads and paywalled features that are hard to understand, while this one is clean, so seniors who don't want ads picked it.

**C** **How you could follow** Stop building Japanese senior calendars. Look for other "senior + feature" combinations or existing search terms in other countries, and build a clean, better version under the same name, relying on store search for organic traffic. To make money you'd have to go with a one-time purchase, or take the ad-and-paid-acquisition route instead.

C grade: the playbook is worth learning and nearly costs nothing: ride an existing local search term and ship a clean version. But one term only brings a hundred or two installs a day, this app doesn't make money either, and people are already doing this in Japan, Korea and Vietnam, so copying it isn't very worthwhile. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-22 · 11-07 installs 6,416

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 7 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

monocots' "シニアカレンダー" (Senior Calendar) was listed on Google Play in July 22 and has never been updated since. In three and a half months it got 6,416 installs and now adds about 100 a day, ranking #170 or so in Japan's Education free chart. It bought no paid acquisition and makes no money. What drove its growth was the name: the title is identical to a senior calendar a Japanese company released a year earlier. When people search for the phrase on Play, both apps appear together, and those who don't want ads pick this one. The playbook costs almost nothing, and its ceiling is clear.

### A three-star review

In Sep 19 2026, a Japanese user named 家城見栄 gave a senior calendar on Google Play three stars and wrote three points:

> You can adjust the numbers larger or smaller, it's simple, pretty good. But... the gear icon says "去广告" (remove ads). It should say "settings". Ads are fine, but what's that "discounted, countdown" "remove ads" next to it? What happens when the countdown hits 0? I can't tell which parts are free and which cost money. I'm still hesitating about whether to use it.

She wasn't reviewing monocots, she was reviewing the original: Foodmenu.world Co., Ltd.'s "シニアカレンダー: 大きい文字!見やすい!シンプル!高齢者も", launched in July 2025. The store page at the top says "広告が表示されます" (ads will be shown) and "アプリ内購入あり" (in-app purchases available).

A little over a month later, in Oct 25, another user named 野田光伸 left five words under a different app with the same name: "大きくて見易い" (big and easy to read). That one was monocots', and the last line of its store page says "アカウント登録は不要で、広告もありません": no account registration needed, and no ads.

### What it is

A calendar for seniors. The font size can be dragged continuously. It has three pages: month view, schedule, and overview. It can read dates and schedules aloud, has a high-contrast mode, and stores schedules only on the phone. The interface comes in English, Chinese, and Japanese, with holidays following the chosen language. No ads, no in-app purchases, no account. The data safety section reads "データは収集されません" (no data is collected).

Functionally it's nearly the same as the original, with added read-aloud and high-contrast, and without the original's three calendar layouts (wall-hanging monthly calendar, vertical schedule notebook, two-column planner).

### How much it grew

| Date | Total installs | About |
|---|---|---|
| 08-16 | 105 | 25–40 (est.) |
| 09-11 | 919 | 43 (est.) |
| 09-28 | 2,307 | 65–126 (est.) |
| 10-22 | 5,061 | 158 at its peak (est.) |
| 10-28 | 5,476 | 70 (est.) |
| 11-06 | 6,416 | 104 |

The figures before October are estimates from the third-party AppstoreSpy; figures from 10-29 onward are public install counts from Google Play. The curve climbs slowly from a few dozen a day to a hundred or two hundred, with none of the sudden jump to thousands a day that paid acquisition usually produces.

It charted in only one place: the Japan Google Play Productivity free chart, where 10-29 ranked 188 and 11-06 ranked 174. The other 29 countries and regions had no chart entry at all. The Japan listing shows 4.2 stars and 5 reviews. The two visible reviews are from Japanese users with real names (the top one, and 9-13 辻靖彦's 「簡単で楽しい」, "simple and fun"), and they read like real users.

### Where users come from: an existing search term

The key is the title. Its Japan-store title is simply "シニアカレンダー" (Senior Calendar), identical to the main title of Foodmenu's original.

This word was built by Foodmenu. The company published a press release on @Press in Aug 2025 1, and it also shipped a whole set of apps with the same prefix: シニアメモ, シニア脳トレ, シニア電卓, シニア日記 (Senior Memo, Senior Brain Training, Senior Calculator, Senior Diary). As of 11-06, the original had 14,629 installs on Play, 1,456 new installs in a week, and ranked #133 in Japan's Productivity free chart. The iOS Japan store has 64 ratings at 4.33 stars.

A year later, monocots launched under the same name. Its short description reads "大きな文字と音声読み上げで、予定を簡単に確認できるシニア向けカレンダー" (a senior calendar with large text and voice readout for easily checking your schedule), which lands right in this term's search results. Several signs suggest the traffic came from Japan Play's in-store search: it charted only on the Japan chart, its reviews are from Japanese users, the curve is flat, there's nothing off-platform, and searching X for "monocots" and "シニアカレンダー" over 60 days turned up only 0 posts, with only auto-generated store mirror pages found online. Where it ranks for this term wasn't checked (inferred, high confidence).

Evidence of paid acquisition is thin. The same developer's other app, "Senior Magnifier", ran Android ads in 10-20 and 10-24, with about 4,300 impressions. No ads were found for the calendar, and since it doesn't make money, paid spend couldn't be recouped, so it's largely safe to assume it wasn't promoted.

One estimate: the original gets roughly 180 installs a day and monocots roughly 100, which together is about the daily volume of the "シニアカレンダー" term on Japan Play (est.). That's effectively monocots' ceiling.

### Why users stay

The demand is real. Japan has 36.2M people aged 65 and over, 29.1% of the population (per the Aging Society White Paper cited in Foodmenu's press release). When an ordinary calendar's text is enlarged, the month view gets crammed together. The senior calendar built into Fujitsu's "Raku Raku Smartphone" is only available on those phone models.

The loopholes in the original are also real. The three-star review above lays out the problem: the settings button says "remove ads," the discount countdown is hard to understand, and it's unclear what costs money. Foodmenu's own press release admits that ads are "somewhat risky" for older users whose judgment has declined. monocots simply removed ads and dropped sign-up, and for seniors and adult children choosing apps for their parents, that matters more than any new feature.

### Who makes it

The developer ID is simply monocots. The website monocots.app says "Est. 2024, 12 online products, 2M+ users, team in Tokyo / Berlin / San Francisco," which is clearly template copy and doesn't match reality: on Play there are 4 apps in total, with roughly 16k installs combined. Of those, 4 are a magnifier (10k+), this calendar (5,000+), a voice recorder (100+), and a family tree (50+), all written the same way: no ads, no account, data stored locally. On iOS it's listed as Monocots Studio Ltd., with only a magnifier app and no iOS calendar. Only English, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese were chosen as interface languages, which suggests a Chinese-speaking indie developer batch-building small tools for seniors and testing ASO (unverified).

### Who else is doing the same thing

| Product | Where | Scale (around 11-06) | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| シニアカレンダー (Foodmenu.world, Japan) | Android + iOS, 2025-07 | Play 14,629 installs, Japan Education chart #133 | The original, with ads and in-app purchases, three calendar layouts, Japanese only, still being updated as of 10-12 |
| Large Print Calendar (Connectopia, Korea) | iOS 2026-07,Play 2026-10-01 | Play 20,370 installs, 11-02 onward 2,000–3,300 installs a day, #7 on Taiwan's Lifestyle free chart | Has ads and paid acquisition, pushing charts across Taiwan, Japan, Thailand and Korea together. 5.0 stars, 216 ratings, possibly incentivized reviews |
| Large font Vietnamese Calendar (3spartners, Vietnam) | Android, 2026-09 | 12,682 installs, Vietnam Education chart #138 | A Vietnamese large-font version, the same idea applied to another country |
| Lumi Calendar, Easy-to-See Calendar, Calendit, etc. | iOS Japan store, 2026-05 through October | 1–2 ratings each | Japanese indie-built "easy-to-read" calendars, not yet gaining traction |
| LINE Calendar, TimeTree, Jorte | Long-established | LINE Calendar 7.56M installs, Japan Education chart #12 | All-age general calendars with small text and lots of features, exactly what senior calendars are meant to replace |

This niche is small and fragmented, with each app getting tens of thousands of installs. Within the same year, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam all had people building in it, so the opportunity isn't new. Apart from Connectopia's paid acquisition, though, the others are just sitting in the store waiting for search.

### If it were you

**C: there's a lesson here, but copying it isn't worth it.** The move is "find a search term locals have already validated and ship a cleaner version under the same name." It's free to do and can bring in a hundred or more installs a day. But this app's ceiling is a single term at a hundred or two hundred installs a day, and it doesn't make money. To make money you'd need to do what Connectopia did, adding ads and buying traffic, which is a different business altogether.

**Who it suits** : indie developers who can already build simple Android tools and want to practice ASO cheaply; people with a template for "large text, no account, local storage" that they can batch-produce, who are willing to target a dozen-plus terms at once, collect tens to hundreds of installs per term, and think about monetization only after the installs have built up.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to earn money from a single app; anyone who can't write idiomatic store copy in the target language (this playbook relies entirely on titles and short descriptions); anyone building for iOS (several individual developers in Japan already have similar apps there, and none have taken off).

**How to do it** : stop building Japanese senior calendars. That term has already been split between two apps. Pick a "senior + feature" term that the original has but whose ads, single language, or complaints in reviews leave room for, such as the memo, calculator, or diary apps in the Foodmenu family, or similar terms in other countries (Korean "큰 글씨 달력", Thai, Indonesian; Vietnam already has one). Copy the original's features, remove ads and sign-up, add read-aloud and high-contrast, and write the store title using the words locals actually search for. If you want a monetization hook, use a one-time purchase unlock (such as family sharing or reminder tones), not a subscription, and skip the countdown discount. That's exactly what the three-star review complains about.

**How to get users** : through store search. Aim the title, short description, and screenshots at that one term. If the first 50 reviews come from real local users, you can lightly prompt for ratings inside the app. Don't pay for promotion, because you won't recoup it.

**When to move** : this kind of term has no real window, but a single term can hold at most two or three same-named apps. Connectopia, the paid-acquisition follower, is already ranked #40 on Japan's Lifestyle chart and will likely crowd out terms like "大きい文字 カレンダー" within a few months, so if you want to move, list before early 2027 to get a top spot.

**What would show this read was wrong** : ① monocots' installs drop noticeably after November (fewer than 400 per week), meaning the name-riding traffic can't sustain it, or Play flags it as a copycat and demotes it; ② Foodmenu renames or removes its ads, and the loophole closes; ③ conversely, if monocots' magnifier, calendar, and recorder together pass 100k installs in six months, it shows this "one term, one app" matrix can build volume and is worth doing seriously.

### Data and sources

- Installs and charts: Google Play public install counts and Japan's Education free chart (10-29 through 11-06); pre-October install curves are AppstoreSpy estimates.

- Store pages: Google Play Japan pages for monocots' "シニアカレンダー" and Foodmenu's "シニアカレンダー: 大きい文字!見やすい!シンプル!高齢者も" (11-06). The review quotes come from these two pages. The original's iOS rating is from the App Store Japan store.

- Foodmenu press release: @Press 2025-08-01; the senior app series is covered on PR TIMES.

- Developer: monocots.app, the Play developer page, and Monocots Studio Ltd. on the App Store.

- Ads: Senior Magnifier's two BigSpy ads (10-20, 10-24). This calendar itself had no ads found; not finding any doesn't mean none ran.

- X: 60 days searching "monocots" and "シニアカレンダー", 0 posts.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Japan Play Store search + riding the original's same-name title (ASO)** : the Japan-store title 「シニアカレンダー」 is identical to the App that Foodmenu launched 2025 years ago and issued a press release for. Only charts in Japan, has real Japanese user reviews, a smooth curve, and no off-store content. The exact search ranking was not verified.

- Inferred **Play similar-app recommendations and chart exposure** : same category and same name as the original; charted #170 multiple times in Japan Productivity. No direct evidence of featured placement.

- Inferred **Paid promotion** : BigSpy only shows that the same developer's Senior Magnifier ran one Android ad each in 10-20 and 10-24 (around 4.3K impressions). This calendar doesn't appear in the metaads or googleads libraries, has no monetization, and the curve shows no spike from ad spend. Judgment: mostly no paid acquisition.

- **Verified** **Social, media** : x-radar found 60 posts in 0 days; the web only has store mirror pages

## Senior Calendar (シニアカレンダー) / monocots: why it got traction

> Channel: Google Play (app.monocots.seniorcalendar). Research date 2026-11-06. Numbers without a note come from our googleplay database. The since-launch curve is an AppstoreSpy estimate (the `app_day_ext` table).

### Bottom line

**It hasn't really "taken off".** It's an ad-free, purchase-free, account-free large-text calendar for seniors. 2026-07-22 launched and was never updated (still 1.0.1). In three and a half months it got 6,416 installs, now about 100 a day, bouncing between #170 and #190 on Japan's Productivity Top Free chart. Nearly all its traffic comes from Japan Play Store search. The key finding: **its Japan-store title 「シニアカレンダー」 is identical to a same-name app that Foodmenu.world 株式会社 launched a year earlier (2025-07-28)** . That Japanese company issued press releases and built a whole 「シニア」 app series that made this search term valuable; monocots, a year later, took some of that search traffic with an ad-free same-name version. It doesn't earn money and has no monetization path. It looks more like a small developer (likely a Chinese-speaking indie dev) batch-building senior tools and testing ASO.

### 1. Data: how big it really is

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-22 | 0 | Launched (the Play "last updated" date is this day too; no new version since) |
| 2026-08-16 | 105 | AppstoreSpy estimate, about 25–40 installs/day |
| 2026-09-11 | 919 | About 43 installs/day |
| 2026-09-28 | 2,307 | About 65–126 installs/day (first speed-up in mid-September) |
| 2026-10-15 | 3,958 | About 60–197 installs/day |
| 2026-10-22 | 5,061 | About 158 installs/day (peak) |
| 2026-10-28 | 5,476 | About 66–73 installs/day |
| 2026-11-06 | 6,416 | Our own collection: 9 days +940, about 104 installs/day |

- Charts: it has charted in only one, **Japan PRODUCTIVITY Top Free** : #188(10-29) → #180 → #172 → #186 → #191 → #174(11-06). It has not charted in any of the other 29 storefronts (`n_countries_now = 1`).

- Ratings: the Play Japan page shows 4.2 stars and 5 reviews. The two visible ones were written by named Japanese users: 「簡単で楽しい」(辻靖彦, 2026-09-13) and 「大きくて見易い」(野田光伸, 2026-10-25). They read like real users, not paid or incentivized reviews.

- Monetization: the database records `price=0`, `offers_iap=False`, `ad_supported=False`. The store description says "No account is required, and the app does not contain ads", and the data safety section reads 「データは収集されません」. **It has no revenue source at all.**

- Curve shape: it slowly climbed from a few dozen installs a day to a hundred or two. There's no spike of thousands of installs a day within a few days, the kind paid campaigns cause. It looks like organic search traffic building up slowly, with store rankings bringing exposure and exposure bringing downloads.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from monocots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **シニアカレンダー: 大きい文字!見やすい!シンプル!高齢者も** (Foodmenu.world, site.elderly.senior_calendar) | Android + iOS | Play 2025-07-28;iOS 2025-07-31 | Play 14,629 installs, 7 days +1,456, Japan Productivity Top Free #133 (googleplay database 11-06); iOS Japan store 64 ratings / 4.33 stars (iTunes lookup) | **The original.** A Japanese company; 2025-08-01 issued a press release via @Press and runs its own 「シニアメモ / シニア脳トレ / シニア電卓 / シニア日記」 series (PR TIMES). Has ads, plans an ad-free subscription (the database already records in-app purchases), and offers 3 calendar styles including a list view and a two-column planner view. Japanese only. monocots shares its name; the differences are no ads, text-to-speech, high contrast, and support for Chinese, English, and Japanese. |
| **Large Print Calendar** (Connectopia co.ltd, South Korea, app.connectopia.video.calendar) | Android + iOS | iOS 2026-07-21;Play 2026-10-01 | Play 20,370 installs; since 11-02 daily 2,000–3,300 installs, 7 days +14,435; Taiwan Lifestyle Top Free #7, overall app chart #136; Japan Lifestyle 40, Thailand 43, South Korea 79; 5.0 stars / 216 ratings | A follower in the same category and the same year, but taking the **paid acquisition + push-the-numbers** route: ad-supported, with a daily image, moon phases, and US holidays. 5.0 stars from 200+ ratings (possibly prompted for positive reviews). The obvious spike in 11-02 is paid acquisition. |
| **Large font Vietnames Calendar** (3spartners,com.threespartners.bignumbercalendar) | Android | 2026-09-09 | 12,682 installs, 7 days +1,931, Vietnam Productivity Top Free #138 | A local Vietnamese large-text lunar calendar; a version of the same idea in another country |
| ルミカレ / 見やすいカレンダー / Calendit, among others | Japan iOS store | 2026-05 to October | 1–2 ratings each (appstore database) | A Japanese indie dev's attractive large-text calendar. Not gaining traction yet. |
| RemindMe! - Dementia Calendar(MindUp) | iOS US store | 2024-05 | 4 ratings | A reminder calendar for people with dementia. Very small. |
| LINEカレンダー / TimeTree / ジョルテ / Lifebear | Android / iOS | Long-established | LINE Calendar 7.56M installs, Japan Productivity Top Free #12; Lifebear 2.67M installs | A general all-ages calendar with small text and lots of features. It's exactly what a senior calendar is meant to replace. |
| System font size / the calendar built into the らくらくスマートフォン phone / Google Calendar | Big-company features | — | On every Android phone | Turning up system font size partly fixes it, but the month view gets cramped when scaled up. The らくらくスマホ calendar only exists on certain models. |

**Bottom line** : this niche is small and fragmented, with each app at only 10–20K installs. Foodmenu.world is what actually built the 「シニアカレンダー」 category; monocots is an improved same-name version launched a year later. In the same period, Connectopia in South Korea and 3spartners in Vietnam built similar things for their own markets.

### 3. Where users come from

1. **Japan Play Store search for 「シニアカレンダー」 / 「シニア カレンダー」 (main channel; high confidence, but no direct search ranking data)**
    - 它日本区的标题就是「シニアカレンダー」(Play 日本页标题「シニアカレンダー - Google Play のアプリ」),短描述是「大きな文字と音声読み上げで、予定を簡単に確認できるシニア向けカレンダー」。
    - Behind this term is existing demand: Foodmenu issued a press release for its app 2025 years ago (carried by @Press, newscast, and presscarry), and app-ranking sites like applion index it.
    - Charting only in Japan, real Japanese user reviews, a steady curve of a few dozen to a hundred-plus installs a day, and no off-store content all point to in-store search.
    - The Japan Play search page we fetched with Jina (logged out, exit IP abroad) didn't show it, so **we haven't verified where it ranks for this search term** .

2. **Play similar apps and chart exposure (inferred)** : it's in the same category and shares a name with Foodmenu's original, so it likely appears in the original's recommendation slots. Charting #170 multiple times in Japan Productivity also brings some browsing traffic.

3. **Paid acquisition: no evidence for this one. Its sister app has sporadic ad spend**
    - BigSpy's search summary shows **Senior Magnifier (the same developer's magnifier app)** ran two Android ads on 26/10/20 and 26/10/24, with exposure around 4.3K. Only a day or two, very small volume.
    - Senior Calendar itself isn't in our metaads or googleads libraries (both only track listed products, so a miss doesn't mean no spend).
    - The app also has no monetization, so any paid acquisition wouldn't pay back. And the install curve shows no spike that looks like ad spend. Our read: it's basically not buying traffic.

4. **Social and media: none** . In x-radar, searches for "monocots" and "シニアカレンダー" over 60 days each return 0 posts; web search only turns up auto-generated store mirror pages like AppBrain, AppInsider and appiff.

### 4. Why it's still around and still growing

- **The need is real** : 65+ people in Japan are 36.2M, 29.1% of the population (per the Foodmenu press release, citing the Aging Society White Paper). People with presbyopia or stiff hands really do struggle with a regular calendar. The user review "大きくて見易い" (big and easy to read) names exactly that pain.

- **Free, no ads, no sign-up** : Foodmenu's own press release admits ads are "somewhat risky" for older users whose judgment is slipping. monocots removes ads outright, which is a plus for seniors and for adult kids choosing apps for their parents.

- **Two features beyond the original** : it reads dates and schedules aloud (TTS) and has a high-contrast mode. Both versions offer continuous font sizing.

- **Data stays on the device** : no network, no account, so seniors don't get stuck at sign-up.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- **Differentiation** : versus the original Foodmenu, it's "same name + no ads + voice readout + high contrast + Chinese, English and Japanese". Versus Connectopia, it's "no paid acquisition, no ads".

- **But what gets it seen isn't these differences. It's the name** : it uses the exact term Japanese users search for, "シニアカレンダー", and takes the original's name word for word. No ads and voice readout helped it earn reviews and keep users alongside the original, but the volume ceiling depends on how big that search term is. The original gets roughly 180 installs a day and this one roughly 100. Together that's a rough estimate of the term's capacity on the Play Japan store.

- So **differentiation is why it keeps users, but the traffic comes from riding the name (ASO), not from the product itself breaking out** .

### 6. Who is the developer monocots?

- Play developer id `monocots`, email monocotss@gmail.com, website monocots.app. The site copy reads "Est. 2024, 12 live products, 2M+ users, team in Tokyo / Berlin / San Francisco". It looks like template marketing copy that doesn't match reality: Play has 4 apps from them, with roughly 16k installs combined.

- 4 apps: Senior Magnifier (app.monocots.magnifier, 10K+, 2026-08 listed, 15 interface languages), Senior Calendar (5K+), Reliable Voice Recorder (100+), Family Tree (50+, with its own site family.monocots.app). All four follow the "no ads, no account, data on device" pitch.

- On iOS the developer is **Monocots Studio Ltd.** , with only Easy Magnifier (2026-09-27 listed, 0 ratings). **Senior Calendar has no iOS version** .

- The interface languages are English / Simplified Chinese / Japanese, same as the recorder app. Our guess is the developer speaks Chinese (unverified).

### 7. How many people know about it

**Few people know about it yet.** Revenue is zero, so there's nothing public to point to. No media coverage, 0 posts on X, and only auto-generated store mirror pages index it. Still, the "large-print senior calendar" space is already crowded: the original Foodmenu, Korea's Connectopia (spending heavily on acquisition), 3 partners in Vietnam, plus several solo developers on the Japan iOS store. It's not a new idea.

### 8. What others can borrow

- **Find a local search term someone has already validated, then ship a clean version** : the original has ads, is Japanese-only and thin on features. Taking the same name with a no-ads version gets you about 100 installs a day with zero spend.

- **A senior-tool lineup** : magnifier, calendar, recorder, family tree. Copy the same "large print, no ads, local storage, multilingual" template across apps, and each one claims a "シニア / Senior + feature name" search term.

- **To make money, change the playbook** : Connectopia adds ad monetization, buys traffic, and pushes charts together in Taiwan, Japan and Thailand. It went from 5,900 to 20k installs in a week. monocots' current approach gets traffic but no revenue.

### 9. Still unclear

- Where it ranks on Play Japan for "シニアカレンダー" and "カレンダー 大きい文字" isn't verified (the logged-out search pages Jina scraped aren't reliable).

- Why it sped up in mid-September and mid-October is unclear: search ranking may have risen, Play may have recommended it, or there may have been sporadic ad spend.

- We don't know what share of installs comes from Japan (Play only gives global totals), or how much the Chinese and English interfaces contribute.

- We haven't verified the developer's real identity or location, or the country and format of the Senior Magnifier ad on BigSpy.
