# Two people, 26 languages, one general-knowledge app: how Sophia picked up traffic on the education charts in Italy and Turkey

**What it is** A subscription app that delivers a few short general-knowledge lessons plus a quiz each day, covering history, science, and philosophy, in 26 languages, and it's essentially unusable without paying.

**Why it took off** It uses AI to translate the same content into 26 languages and launches with local names, squeezing onto the education charts in low-barrier countries like Italy, Poland, Turkey, and Greece. French TikTok trivia accounts and paid-promotion accounts drive traffic, and a hard iOS paywall with multiple price tiers collects the money.

**B** **How you could follow it** Stop building general-knowledge courses; instead copy this playbook for a text-heavy topic with cheap translation: first build 5 to 8 languages with native-speaker proofreading, test prices behind a hard iOS paywall, pair each language with a trivia short-video account and pay-per-post promotion accounts, and aim to launch before the 2027 January "new year, new you" push.

B grade: a clear playbook, almost nobody outside is paying attention, and the cost is low, so worth a try. But general-knowledge courses are already crowded (Headway, Nibble, SmartyMe, GenK), real revenue is undisclosed, the money from small-country charts may be thin, and AI-translation quality complaints and billing disputes are obvious weak points. Still few people know about it

A two-person Paris studio registered in 2026 March used an AI app-building tool to make a subscription app that teaches "general knowledge in 10 minutes a day," then used AI to translate it into 26 languages and launched across dozens of countries at once. The product is no different from Nibble or Imprint. What's worth studying is the rollout: two people plus a pile of AI, selling one body of content across 40+ countries. The playbook is copyable, but first decide whether you want to copy the playbook or the product.

### A yoga video with 7,800 views

In 2026 Jul 15, a French self-improvement TikTok account called khloe.insight posted a video captioned "Y'a que l'application Sophia pour faire ce genre de miracles j'vous jure" (I swear, only the Sophia app can do these miracles), tagged #culturegenerale #yoga #capcut. As of Nov 6 it had 7,817 views. Three days later, the same account pushed a calorie app called Calyra in the same voice. This is a classic paid-promotion account, paid per post.

Nine days later, on Jul 24, the French App Store got a one-star review describing exactly this path: "Saw an ad, or saw this app in several 'boost your brain' TikToks (promos), and really wanted to try it. Downloaded it, picked my interests, and quickly realized how dumb it was: apart from the quote, everything costs money."

Most of Sophia's growth playbook is in these two things: French short videos pull people in, and a hard paywall collects the money.

### What it is

Sophia - General Knowledge (called "Sophia : Culture Générale" in France, "Cultura Generale" in Italy, "Cultura General" in Mexico) is a general-knowledge micro-lesson app: history, science, philosophy, geopolitics, literature, economics, with a few screens of short text and a quiz per lesson, pitched as "only 10 minutes a day." It later added daily lessons, streaks, a lock-screen widget, audio mode, and a "Bloqueur d'apps" feature: if you haven't finished today's lesson, distracting apps won't open.

It's made by Vik Studios SAS, registered in Paris in 2026 March 30, with two founders, Adrien and Maximilien, one of whom was born in 2005 (per French company registration). The Android package name is `app.rork.sophia`, and the prefix shows it was originally generated with Rork, an AI app-building tool. The iOS version launched in France first in 7 Apr 2026, and Android didn't ship until 20 Aug.

### How big is it really?

| Metric | Metric | Source / date |
|---|---|---|
| Android cumulative installs | 82,954, +18,839 in the last 7 days | Google Play,11-06 |
| Android traction | 9-03 about 644 → 10-01 about 8,700 → 10-21 about 52k | Third-party estimate |
| Android ratings | 2,952 ratings, 4.52 stars, adding 66–97 ratings per day | Google Play,11-06 |
| iOS ratings | France 609, Turkey 607, Mexico 523, Italy 272 | App Store,11-06 |
| iOS Education Top Grossing | Greece 5, Croatia 7, Slovenia 7, Hungary 11, Italy 15–28, France 35–75 | App Store, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| Android Education Top Free | Italy 62, Poland 51–66, Argentina 88, Mexico 101–125 | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |

A few things to be clear about. First, the money comes mostly from iOS; Android contributes volume. The Android build has been stuck at 1.0.5 with no updates since Sep 17, though its volume is still growing; iOS only updated to 1.11 in Nov 3. Second, its chart ranks are mostly in small countries or mid-table: #5 on Greece's Education Top Grossing sounds good, but the bar for that chart in Greece is already low. Third, the official site's numbers don't agree with each other: one spot says "200k downloads," another "500k+ downloads"; "#3 on the French App Store Education chart in 2026 year" can't be verified from outside. No real revenue has been disclosed, nobody has discussed it on X in nearly 90 days, and there's no press coverage.

### Why this one, and why now

**One piece of content, 26 languages.** For a short-lesson app, translation costs almost nothing. Sophia lists the app under local-language names in each country (Allgemeinwissen, Algemene Kennis, Allmänbildning, 教養…), so people searching "cultura generale" can find it. The studio's site is blunt about it: they have a "localization agent" covering 26 languages and a "growth agent" that finds content formats that work, writes scripts and schedules posts.

**Small-country education charts have low barriers.** In Italy, Poland, Turkey, Greece and Croatia, you need very little volume to reach the top few dozen of the Education Free chart or the top 30 of Top Grossing. A bit of organic traffic plus a local name gets you charted, and the chart brings views and searches, so volume snowballs. Big English-language players (Headway, Nibble, Imprint) rarely localize carefully for these countries, and French local peers (Sapio, GenK, MEMO) only do French, so this gap was left open.

**Short-video traffic, paid UGC for volume.** The official account @sophia_app has 7,400 followers and regularly posts "Tu savais ?" (Did you know?) trivia clips. The last ten got 1,300 to 7,200 views each, and the top one covered why the Black Death spread so fast. The real volume comes from promotion accounts: besides khloe.insight above, ida.ugcvision, whose bio literally says "Tech UGC Creator", posted several #sophiaapp videos from late October to early November, and also promoted other apps in the same period. Whether other languages have the same account network is not findable in public sources (unverified).

**Hard paywall with heavy price testing.** On the French store page last week: 6.99€ weekly, 9.99€ monthly, and six annual tiers at the same time (9.99 / 19.99 / 29.99 / 39.99 / 49.99 / 69.99€). It looks like large-scale price testing (inferred). What users experience: "Page two already demands payment, you can only read the intro" (France, 7-13); an Italian user wrote "Install is free, but after signing up you only get one free day" (10-17).

### What users are complaining about

Some reviewers genuinely like it. An Italian four-star review titled "Best alternative to scrolling TikTok" (9-24); a French reviewer said "I've installed lots of apps, this is one of the few I use every day." But the one-star reviews cluster around two issues, which matter if you plan to copy this:

- **Payments and charges.** In the Turkish store since October, most one-star reviews are about money: "I cancelled before the 3-day trial ended and was still charged 1,999 lira" (10-01); "I subscribed by accident, cancelled the same day, deleted the account, and still got charged 1,000 lira" (10-15); "400 or 500 lira a month is too expensive, I'd buy it if I were a student" (150 10-26).

- **Translation quality.** Italian store: "The Italian translation has problems, I had to switch to English" (8-24), "Lots of grammar errors and missing words, makes you doubt the content" (8-08). In the Turkish store, a two-star review is literally titled "AI made": "The content must be AI-translated, it doesn't make sense in places" (10-11). Two more reviews are arguing about the Armenian lesson, one of them with a one-star rating.

This is the cost of "AI translating into 26 languages at once": the volume gets spread out, the reputation in each country is slightly worse, and on sensitive topics like history and religion, local users won't be polite.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | How Sophia differs |
|---|---|---|
| Headway | Google Play 31.8M installs; 7-day +106k | Mostly book summaries; heavy paid acquisition |
| Nibble | Google Play 2.96M | Same category: daily lessons + quizzes, large-scale paid acquisition |
| SmartyMe | Google Play 2.89M; 7-day +168k | Launched only at the end of 2024; far heavier paid acquisition than Sophia |
| Imprint | Google Play 1.37M | Visual courses, targeting the US |
| GenK : Culture Générale | French iOS 4,714 rating; Education Top Grossing 16 | The most direct local rival in France, doing better there than Sophia |
| Sapio | Featured by Le Figaro Étudiant (2025-07) | "Duolingo for general knowledge", French only |
| MEMO - histoires du jour | Google Play 23k; top creator video up to 1.47M views | Covers "on this day in history", with a more aggressive French TikTok approach |

This category is crowded. Sophia isn't the first and isn't the biggest. It survives because it targets countries the big players ignore and local players can't reach.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** You can try it, but what you'd be copying is the "AI multilingual flood of small-country charts" playbook, not the general-knowledge product itself. The general-knowledge space is already saturated, and once Headway, Nibble or SmartyMe seriously localize, this gap closes.

**Who it suits:** 1 to 2 people who have shipped a subscription app and can use tools like RevenueCat or Superwall to test paywalls. Ideally you can proofread at least one or two languages beyond your mother tongue yourself.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who wants to win on content quality (this playbook assumes cheap content); anyone who wants English as the main battlefield (that's the Headway-style paid acquisition war); anyone who can't handle refunds and one-star reviews.

**How to do it:** Pick a text-heavy category that's cheap to translate and that Sophia and its peers haven't flooded, such as close cousins of general knowledge (short psychology, personal finance or philosophy courses), or the same "daily lesson + quiz + app lock" model with a different topic. Start with 5 to 8 languages, and have a native speaker proofread the first 20 lessons and the store page in each, so you don't end up with Italian and Turkish users picking apart your grammar in the reviews like Sophia's. Edit or drop history, religion and politics content by country. Launch on iOS first, with the paywall earlier and harder, and test several annual price tiers at once. Make the trial-expiry reminder clear: fewer charge disputes means fewer one-star reviews.

**How to get users:** Run one official account per language posting a fixed format of short trivia videos. Find pay-per-post promoters in French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish "self-improvement" and "study" TikTok accounts, at roughly tens to a few hundred euros per post (estimated). Name each country's store listing with the local category term. Start with countries where the education chart bar is low, like Italy, Poland, Turkey and Mexico, and add budget wherever you chart first.

**When to launch by:** Launch before January 2027. The New Year "new year, new me" push is the best acquisition window of the year for learning apps. If you catch it, January volume and chart positions will tell you whether this playbook works in the countries you picked.

**What it looks like when you've misread it:** ① Sophia's Android day-7 new installs (11-06 about 19k) drop to under half by December, and the iOS Top Grossing Education charts in Italy and Greece lose their spot in the top 50, so the small-country play isn't holding; ② Headway, Nibble, or SmartyMe put up localized store pages in Italy, Poland, and Turkey and start spending on paid acquisition; ③ Three to 30 days after launch, none of your three chosen countries has you in the top 100 of the Education Top Free chart.

### One line

Vik Studios, a two-person studio in Paris (2026-03-30 registered), makes a subscription app offering "10-minute daily general-knowledge lessons". The `app.rork` package prefix shows it was originally generated with Rork, an AI app-building tool. The iOS version launched in France first 2026-04, and the Android version came out 2026-08-20 later. It gained traction mainly through three things: using AI to localize into 26 languages and simultaneously getting listed on education category charts in dozens of countries; French-language organic TikTok accounts plus paid UGC creators; and a hard paywall with heavy price A/B testing to recover revenue. The product format itself is essentially no different from Imprint, Nibble, Headway, Sapio, or MEMO.

### 1. Basic data

- **Android** (googleplay library): global cumulative installs 82,954 (11-06), 7-day +18,839; rating count 2,952,7-day +624, average 4.52. Version still at 1.0.5 (no updates since Sep 17). In-app purchases $8.99–$34.99, no ads.

- **Android install curve** (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 9-03 about 644 → 10-01 about 8,672 → 10-04 about 14,941 → 10-21 about 52,348 → 11-06 total 82,954. From early October it ran about 2,000–4,000 per day, with several single-day jumps (10-04 about +4,100,10-21, about +8,300), which looks like content going viral or a concentrated ad push on a given day.

- **Ratings-to-installs about 3.6%** , high for Play. Daily new ratings run 66–97, steady enough to suggest a rating prompt built into the flow (unverified).

- **Android charts** (chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-06): Education free chart in Italy 62, Poland 51–66, Argentina 88, Mexico 101–125, Turkey 94–136, Spain 109–134, Germany 111–170, France 133–194, Brazil 146–180. Education Top Grossing chart only in Nigeria, Hong Kong, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Netherlands and Poland, at ranks 167–200. These positions move nearly in lockstep day to day, which points to a single aggregate chart rather than real per-country earnings.

- **iOS** (appstore library, id 6760919622, first released 2026-04-07): 609 ratings and a 4.65 average in the French store (iTunes lookup); also Turkey 598, Mexico 515, Spain 383, Italy 267, Germany 222. On iOS it charts in Education Top Grossing: Italy 15–28, Greece 5, Croatia 7, Slovenia 7, Hungary 11, Romania 20, Turkey 23, France 35–75, Spain 33–49, Germany 32–67. **Most of the money comes from iOS; Android mainly drives volume.**

- **Pricing** (App Store, French storefront): weekly 6.99€, monthly 9.99€, and yearly plans stacked at 9.99 / 19.99 / 29.99 / 39.99 / 49.99 / 69.99€. This looks like large-scale price testing (likely a RevenueCat / Superwall paywall experiment, unverified).

- **Official claims** : sophia-culture.com says "200,000 downloads, 4.8★ on the App Store, 2026 French App Store education chart #3"; vikstudios.com says Sophia has "500k+ téléchargements, 26 languages" and the studio has "200 000+ people in 40+ countries". The two sets of numbers don't match, and we can't verify #3 in our library (from 10-28).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Sophia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headway | iOS/Android | 2019 | 31.8M installs on Play, 7 days +106k; 117k ratings on the US iOS store | Mainly book summaries, heavy paid acquisition; Sophia is subject-by-subject general knowledge courses |
| Imprint | iOS/Android | 2019 / 2022 | 1.37M on Play; 60k ratings on the US iOS store, 7 days +742 | Visual courses aimed at the US English market; Sophia targets non-English markets in Europe and Latin America |
| Nibble | iOS/Android | 2022 | Play 2.96M; US iOS 47k ratings | Same "daily lesson + quiz" format, large-scale paid acquisition; Sophia leads with local languages |
| SmartyMe | iOS/Android | 2024-11 | Play 2.89M; 7-day +168k | Same micro-learning model, far heavier ad spend |
| Kinnu | iOS/Android | 2022 | 850k on Play | English, spaced repetition; Sophia started in French and expands to 26 languages |
| Yuno(Gaiali) | Android/iOS | 2021 | 270k on Play | A general knowledge app for German-speaking markets |
| Sapio (France) | iOS | 2025 | Featured in Le Figaro Étudiant (2025-07), pitched as "the Duolingo de la culture générale" | Same French positioning, French-only with more users; Sophia goes multilingual |
| GenK: Culture Générale (NOERDEN, France) | iOS 2024-10 / Play 2026-09-10 | French store iOS 4,714 rating, Education Top Grossing 16; Play 72k, French Education Top Free 7 | The most direct rival in France, doing better there than Sophia; Sophia relies on volume across many countries | |
| MEMO - histoires du jour (SevenLabs, France) | iOS / Play 2026-05 | 23k on Play; TikTok creator zoe_cbo and others hit 1.47M views on a single post | Short stories about "what happened on this day in history"; its French TikTok playbook matches Sophia's, executed more aggressively | |
| Quiz games such as Quiz Culture Générale and Erudite | iOS/Android | From ¥2014 | Play in the millions | Question-bank games with ad monetization; Sophia is courses plus subscriptions |

Takeaway: this niche is crowded. Sophia is neither the first entrant nor the biggest.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Official TikTok account** : @sophia_app has 7,404 followers and 14 videos, posting "Tu savais ?"-style trivia clips between 2026-08 and 09, with single videos at 1.3k–13.6k views. Its bio reads "Rejoins +30.000 utilisateurs" (TikHub). Reach is modest.

2. **Paid UGC / promotion accounts** :
    - khloe.insight (a French self-improvement account) posted "Y'a que l'application Sophia…" on 2026-07-15, with 7.8k views. The same account also promotes other apps such as Calyra, a typical paid promoter.
    - ida.ugcvision's bio reads "Tech UGC Creator". Between 2026-10-23 and 11-04 they posted several #sophiaapp #ugccreators videos, each at 0.7k–2.2k views, while also promoting ScreenZen. This looks like a per-post English UGC creator.
    - comwithmary (2026-09-11, "5 applications pour devenir plus cultivé") is a listicle-style recommendation account. (TikHub search)

3. **The studio's own playbook** : vikstudios.com says "Agents Growth: identify the formats that perform, write scripts, schedule posts", "Agent Localisation: 26 languages", and "Vues organiques xM+". This suggests they use AI agents to produce short-form content and localization in bulk. We only found a few French and English posts. We didn't find organic account networks in other languages (unverified).

4. **Multilingual store search coverage** : each country gets a localized listing name, e.g. "Sophia : Cultura Generale / Allgemeinwissen / Cultura General / Algemene Kennis / Allmänbildning / 教養" (appstore app_profile), and they pick up rankings on small-country education charts. On Android they reach free education charts in Italy, Poland, Turkey, Argentina, and Mexico. Low competition is one reason.

5. **Paid ads** : we found no Sophia or Vik Studios entries in the metaads or tiktokads libraries. It isn't on our tracking list, so "not found" doesn't mean they aren't advertising.

6. **Press / X / public revenue** : no relevant x-radar posts in the last 90 days; no press coverage; not on TrustMRR; the founders haven't shared revenue publicly.

7. **Team** : Vik Studios SAS, registered in Paris 2026-03-30 (annuaire-entreprises, Le Figaro company page). Two founders, Adrien and Maximilien. Maximilien Kender was born in 2005 (Pappers) and appears in a HEC Paris article byline. The studio's other apps are UnSwipe (2026-10) and Micabo. Artura has very little traction.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Cheap content × multilingual** : hundreds of five-screen short lessons plus quizzes, with text AI-translated into 26 languages in one go. The site advertises courses signed by "profs / docteurs". One piece of content, sold across 40+ countries.

- **Low bar for small-language education charts** : in countries like Italy, Poland, Turkey, Greece, and Croatia, ranking in the free education chart's top dozens or the top grossing chart's top 30 takes very little volume. Some organic installs plus a local store name is enough to chart, and charting brings browsing and search.

- **Hard iOS paywall + price testing** : the paywall locks at the second lesson (many App Store reviews complain "On ne peut absolument rien faire sans abonnement" and "40€ par an"). Users are angry, but it doesn't stop iOS from charting in education top grossing across several countries. Conversion comes from an aggressive paywall, not from free content driving retention.

- **Retention hooks** : the 1.1.7 version added a daily lesson, streaks, lock-screen and home-screen "daily question" widgets, audio mode, and "Bloqueur d'apps" (apps stay locked until you finish today's lesson). That last one ties the anti-phone-addiction mood to learning, in the same vein as the studio's UnSwipe.

- **Android is convenient volume** : the Android version hasn't been updated in two months, yet installs keep growing steadily. That suggests growth mostly spills over from TikTok and store exposure, not from dedicated Android work.

### 5. Differentiation

The product features (short lessons, quizzes, streaks, audio) are very similar to Nibble, Imprint, Sapio, and GenK, so the product itself isn't really differentiated. What sets it apart is the **operating model** :

- Two people plus a fleet of AI agents sync the same product across 26 languages and 40 countries at very low cost. Most comparable apps are English-only (Imprint, Nibble) or French-only (Sapio, GenK, MEMO).

- It targets mid-sized countries where big English players haven't localized carefully (Italy, Poland, Turkey, Latin America, Eastern Europe).

- "Finish today's lesson to unlock other apps" is a bit of a novelty, but it was only added in October and isn't what drove growth.

So its traction comes from the playbook of multilingual volume, low-bar small-country charts, and a paywall, not from a unique product.

### 6. What to borrow

- Use AI to turn one text-based content product into 20–30 languages, list each in the local name, and pick up rankings on small-language education or productivity charts.

- Run several yearly price points at once as A/B tests, and validate conversion with a hard paywall first.

- Run an official account with a fixed trivia format ("Tu savais ?"), then pay promotion accounts and UGC creators per post.

- Use a feature like "stay locked out of distracting apps until you finish learning" to connect the anti-phone-addiction need to learning.

### 7. Still unclear

- Real revenue and subscription conversion rate; when exactly the French iOS chart #3 happened.

- Whether it runs ads on Meta or TikTok (our libraries don't track it).

- Whether it has local-language TikTok or Instagram account networks in Italy, Poland, Turkey, or Latin America (the website implies it does; we didn't find them).

- Whether the ratio of ratings to installs is high because it's prompting for good reviews.

- Which download figure on the website (200k or 500k+) is accurate.
