# An office worker sells a fishing forecast app into Turkey's top-ten grossing chart with daily fishing shorts

**What it is** A fishing forecast app: it turns wind, waves, tides, water temperature, pressure, and moon phase into an hourly "can I fish today" score by Turkish local species, plus spot maps and bait and rig suggestions. The core content requires a subscription.

**Why it took off** The creator posts Turkish-language fishing tip videos daily on TikTok and Instagram. A few videos in late October with 20–500k views caught the autumn fish run and pulled in anglers. The hard paywall pushed it into the top ten of Turkey's iOS sports grossing chart.

**B** **How you could follow it** Skip Turkey. Pick a country with lots of anglers and no major local player, use free sea-condition data to build an hourly scorer by local species, get users through daily fishing-tips shorts that you film yourself, validate payment on iOS first, and give a generous trial.

Grade B: the approach is clear, cheap, and portable to other countries, but Turkey alone already has a dozen similar apps, the features have no real barrier, success depends on whether you can keep producing local fishing content, and subscription revenue has a low ceiling in small countries. A Turkish engineer working in Germany built a Turkish-language fishing forecast app after work, then posted two fishing videos a day. Three months later it reached #5 on Turkey's App Store sports grossing chart, and the Android version got 7,800 installs in its first month. Anyone could build the product itself: Turkey already has a dozen nearly identical apps. It pulled ahead through a short-video account and a very hard paywall. Whether this playbook works in other countries is covered below.

### Night of Nov 6, one video

On Nov 6, the TikTok account @balk.yakala posted its second video of the day. The caption roughly read: "At night everyone casts far out, but in November the lüfer (bluefish) comes to the shore, and the biggest one is a meter from your feet. Horse mackerel swim toward the light, and lüfer wait in the dark: cast at the edge between light and dark." The video has no face and doesn't mention the app. It teaches a fishing tip, with the app name only at the end of the caption.

Since October this account has posted 60 videos like this, about 2.25M views combined. The top few: "Fish are closest to shore before dawn" 490k, "Wind blowing toward shore, don't go home" 330k, "Don't cast far, the fish are at your feet" 260k (TikTok, 11-06). The same person's Instagram account @balik.yakala has 43k followers, with an App Store link right in the bio.

The app is Balık Yakala ("Catch Fish"), English name Catch: Fishing Forecast. On Nov 6 it ranked #11 on Turkey's App Store sports grossing chart. Ahead of it were sports betting, live sports streaming, F1 TV, and Sofascore.

### What it is

A "can I fish today" scorer for anglers. It combines wind, waves, currents, pressure, water temperature, tides, and moon phase into one score, broken down by hour and by species: what to fish today, what time to go, which spot (called mera in Turkish), and which bait and rig to use. The website says it covers 101 species in Turkey's coastal waters, with 800+ spots marked on the map.

All the data is free public weather and sea-condition data, the same sources similar products use (Open-Meteo, Copernicus Marine Service, NOAA-type feeds). There's no technical barrier. The hard part is turning those numbers into language Turkish anglers use: which local fish, which bay, what time of day.

The builder is Yiğit Can Taşoğlu, a graduate of Istanbul Technical University. LinkedIn shows he now leads AI product work at Bosch in Germany. He has published a dozen or so small products under the name Vision Lab Tech (an AI keyboard, a German citizenship test question bank, macOS utilities, and others). This is the one that took off. It's a typical side project of someone with a day job, trying several products at once solo.

### How it took off

The timeline is clear:

| Timeline | Event |
|---|---|
| 2026-07-10 | iOS version launched in Turkey |
| 7–September | Started posting on Instagram. Hooks: "The bay fishermen kept secret for years is now on the map: 844 spots" and "Deleted 5 fishing apps. This one has weather, spots, bait and rigs, all in one place." |
| 10-07 | Android version launched |
| around mid-October | Turkish fishing creator Mera Profesörü co-posted a Reel with it, announcing the app launch and teasing a follower-only discount |
| 10-18 to 11-01 | A few TikToks in a row hit 20–500k views |
| 10-29 | Hit #5 on the Turkey iOS Top Grossing Sports chart |
| 10-29 to 11-05 | Android installs climbed from 4,237 to 7,524, averaging 400–500 a day. 11-03 reached #17 on the Turkey Sports Top Free chart |
| From ¥11-05 | Video views faded, and Android daily installs dropped to 273 |

(Android figures are Google Play install estimates, 11-06. Chart positions are from the App Store and Google Play Turkey stores.)

The install curve and the video views move almost in lockstep: videos blow up, installs rise; videos fade, installs fall too. Where users come from and where the money comes from are both clear: users come from short video, money comes from the iOS paywall.

Two other things helped. First, timing: 10–November is peak season for lüfer and palamut (bonito) in the Istanbul Strait, when the most people are fishing and the content is easiest to make (inference, common industry knowledge). Second, the website balikyakala.app has a "how to catch it" page for each fish species, such as "How to fish for İzmarit: bait, rigs and season," which catches search traffic. I couldn't confirm whether ads were run, and the TikTok videos carry no ad labels.

### Money: the paywall is hated, but it's making money

Subscriptions are $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Free users can basically only see the weather. Spots and "which fish is easiest to catch" are locked behind Pro, and more gets locked over time. App Store reviews are blunt about it:

- "Phones already have free weather. Two months after launch and everything costs money." (1 stars, 10-15)

- "I used to be able to see the spot map for free. The last update put that behind the paywall too." (1 stars, 10-23)

- "Still in the trial and the annual fee got charged before noon." (2 stars, 10-31)

- "I build apps myself. The content is good, but people who just installed want to look closer and hit the Pro wall right away. There should be a trial." (4 stars, 10-21)

The number of complaints suggests plenty of people are paying: a fishing tool ranked #5 to #11 on Turkey's iOS Top Grossing Sports chart, surrounded by betting and sports streaming apps. The Turkey Top Grossing bar is low, though, so absolute revenue won't be large. A third-party estimate puts monthly revenue at $5,000–10,000, unverified (estimate). iOS rating is 290 from 4.34 reviews, with 10 new reviews over 56 days (App Store Turkey, 11-06). The developer gave a little ground in late October by moving some features back to free.

Another common complaint is "it says there are fish where there aren't any, and where the fishing is good, 40 people are standing side by side and nothing shows up." Whether the scoring is accurate is something this kind of product will eventually have to face.

### Who it's competing with

Global big players haven't gone deep into Turkey, but the local market is already crowded with solo developers:

| Product | Scale (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fishbrain | Play 10.8M installs | Global catch logs and social features; weak on Turkish local species and spots |
| Fishing Points | Play 11.2M installs | Global map and tides; #4 on the Brazil Sports Top Grossing chart |
| FishRadar | Play 19.9k installs, 7-day +1,558 | Turkish peer with more installs than Yakala but slower growth |
| Fishifu | Play 11.9k installs, 7-day +2,761 | Turkish peer, launched in July |
| Mera Radar | Play 10.6k installs, 7-day +1,606 | Turkish peer focused on shore-fishing spots |
| Balık Durumu | Play 6,255 installs, **7-day +5,639** | Turkish peer, growing faster than Yakala this week |
| BalıkTahmini | Web, free | Free hourly probability map covering the whole Turkish coast |

The App Store also has five or six small-scale copycats such as Balık Cepte, MERA Balık Avı Rehberi and Olta, all launched between 2026 and 5, with September releases. This niche in Turkey is already crowded this year, and free web versions exist too. Compared with these, Yakala's features are nearly identical. What sets it apart is that it built a content account and dared to charge.

### If it were you

**Verdict: B, worth a try.** Turkey is already packed, so skip it. But the formula of "small country + local fish species + free sea-condition data + faceless short educational videos" is clearly portable to other countries. The two bets are whether you can post fishing content daily yourself, and whether anglers in that country will pay for it.

**Good fit for:** someone who fishes, or who has a fishing circle around them; someone whose native language belongs to a country with many anglers but no localized big-player product, such as Greek, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian or Vietnamese. (I haven't checked each one for gaps, so search the local app store for "fishing forecast" before you start.) You should be able to write two short educational fishing scripts a day, ideally in a place where you can get out on the water in summer.

**Poor fit for:** people who don't fish and can't produce content. The features can be copied within a week, so the whole barrier is content. Anyone aiming at English and the US market: Fishbrain and Fishing Points already own it. Anyone wanting to build another one in Turkey.

**How to build it:** start with a forecast that scores each local species hour by hour using public data, then add local bait, rigs, minimum sizes and closed seasons, with the spot map as the paid hook. Validate on iOS first to see if anyone pays, then add Android. Copy its paywall approach but not its mistakes: give a full 3–7 day trial, remind users before charging, leave a usable slice of the map free, and don't claw features back after people have grown used to them.

**How to get users:** copy its content playbook: faceless, in the local language, one video per fishing tip ("what time fish hug the shore," "which direction to cast based on water color," "moon phase and species"), with the app name at the end. Post on Instagram and TikTok at the same time, and partner with one or two local fishing creators on launch videos. Build a "how to catch it" page for each local species on your website to catch search traffic.

**When to start:** check your country's fishing season. In the Mediterranean, autumn is peak in the Northern Hemisphere. It's late to start now, so bank content and aim for a launch ahead of the 2027 spring run. In the Southern Hemisphere (Brazil, Australia, Chile), summer is just beginning, so timing is better there.

**Signs you've misread the market:** ① Yakala drops out of the top 30 on Turkey's iOS Sports grossing chart after the peak season ends (December), suggesting payment was just seasonal impulse. ② It expands to the US and Canada (already listed in its description) and charts in none of those stores for three months, suggesting the approach doesn't travel beyond its native language. ③ You post 30 videos in a row and none passes 10k views, suggesting local fishing content is saturated, or that what you're making is the wrong thing.

### One line

A fishing app made by a Turkish developer, a "fishing index" for sea and freshwater fishing. It converts wind and waves, currents, air pressure, water temperature, tides, and moon phases into scores by species and by hour, plus a "fishing spot (mera) map" and bait and rig recommendations. The core content is locked behind a Pro subscription ($9.99/month, $39.99/year). The iOS version launched first 2026-07-10 (Turkey store), and the Play version came out 2026-10-07 later. It drew Turkish anglers in through **one person posting Turkish-language fishing tips short videos on Instagram and TikTok every day** . The English name "Catch" in the store and US/Canada support are for now only written in the description.

| Pricing | Pro subscription $9.99–$39.99 (Play iap_range); same on iOS | googleplay.app_snap |

Benchmark: on the same day, the top ten TR Sports Top Grossing were all iddaa (sports betting), S Sport, F1 TV, Sofascore and the like. A fishing tool ranking #5–#11 suggests it is indeed taking payments on Turkish iOS (though the Turkey bar is low, so absolute amounts are small; the monthly revenue of $5K–$10K quoted by the recall card citing Searvia is unverified).

### Who made it

- Developer Yiğit Can Taşoğlu: Istanbul Technical University background; LinkedIn shows him currently as an AI Product Owner at Bosch (Stuttgart, Germany). The Play publisher name Vision Lab Tech = his personal "studio" site visionlabtech.com (self-described German software studio), which lists 9 products: Brain Stacking, Suspio, Say What (AI keyboard), Leben in Deutschland (German citizenship test), Balık Yakala, Clean Exit (macOS), Fitcheck Studio, Coloret, Drone Map, Urgent Alert. A typical "office worker indie testing multiple products" pattern; Balık Yakala is the one that took off.

- The recall card says this entity also has fishing forecast apps like Cardumi and PrimeTime Fishing (a portfolio strategy). **Unverified** : the visionlabtech.com product pages do not list those two; PrimeTime Fishing's developer in our appstore library is Dane Hegvold (Australia, 2026-09-23 listed), unrelated to this author. No portfolio is visible so far; it looks more like a single product.

### Competitors

Turkey's "fishing forecast" apps have clearly bunched up over the past 2026 year, almost all by individual developers:

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Balık Yakala |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishbrain | iOS/Android | 2012/2013 | Play 10.8M installs; US iOS 77k ratings | Global social + catch log; weak Turkish localization and local species/spot data |
| Fishing Points | iOS/Android | 2013 | Play 11.2M installs, Brazil Sports Top Grossing #4 | Global map + tides; no Turkish local species hourly scores |
| Fishing forecast (ddi.dev) / Fishing & Hunting Solunar Time and other long-running moon-phase tables | Android | 2013–2018 | 2.3M–4.5M installs | Only generic moon-phase/weather index; no per-species breakdown, no spots or bait |
| BalıkTahmini(baliktahmini.com) | Web + Android | Not verified | Unknown | **Free** , also offers an hourly probability map of the whole Turkish coast (NOAA GFS/WW3 data) |
| FishRadar(cengizhanlabs) | Android/iOS | 2026 (unverified) | Play 19,887 installs, 7 days +1,558, TR Sports Top Free #53 | Similar Turkish fishing forecast; more installs but slower growth |
| Fishifu: Balık Avı & Solunar(Nexsofty) | Android | 2026-07-20 | 11,898 installs, 7-day +2,761 | Similar, leaning toward solunar and maps |
| Mera Radar: Kıyı Balıkçılığı(UAWorks) | Android | 2026-07-09 | 10,551 installs, 7-day +1,606 | Similar, focused on shore-fishing spots |
| Balık Durumu: Av Tahmini(Salih Kılıç) | Android | Not verified | 6,255 installs, **7 days +5,639** (faster than Yakala) | Similar, just took off; very likely a follower of the same demand wave |
| Balık Cepte(Gulsum Eroglan) | iOS | 2026-05-05 | TR 74 rating | AI solunar + gear management; launched two months before Yakala, much smaller |
| MERA Balık Avı Rehberi, Olta: Balık Avı Haritası, Balık Günlüğüm, Zokala, etc. | iOS | 2026-05 to 2026-09 | Single digits to a dozen-odd ratings | Small, copycat products |

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Main Instagram account @balik.yakala: 43.3k followers** (plus @balik.yakala.app with 2,019 followers); the bio links the App Store directly. Post hooks include "The bay the old fisherman hid for years is now on the map — 844 spots", "I deleted 5 apps: weather, spots, bait and rigs are all in one app", "Fish are biting 3 km away and you don't even know". (Instagram profile and reels, read via Jina)

2. **TikTok @balk.yakala: 7,888 followers, 193 videos** . The 67 videos we pulled since October total about 2.25M views; 55 in October, 6 in the first 12 days of November, roughly 2 a day. The viral videos are all **faceless tip content** rather than app ads: "Fish are closest to shore before dawn" 494k, "Wind blowing toward shore, don't go home" 333k, "Don't cast far, the fish are right at your feet" 264k, "5 fish, 5 baits" 227k, "Everyone casts wrong at the reservoir" 131k. Captions end with the app name. (TikHub, 2026-11-06)
    - The timing lines up: TikTok viral videos cluster between 10-18 and 11-01, Play daily installs climbed to 500–620/day between 10-30 and 11-04, and the Play Sports chart reached TR #17 (11-03). From 11-05 onward video views fell back and daily installs dropped to 273.

3. **Fishing creator collab** : the Instagram fishing account "Mera Profesörü" (Salih Özer) co-posted a reel with @balik.yakala about 3 weeks ago: "New app BALIK YAKALA is live… followers will get an exclusive discount soon." (Instagram reel DbvIqgyghnA)

4. **Web SEO** : balikyakala.app has a landing page for each fish species (e.g. "İzmarit Nasıl Tutulur? Yem, Takım ve Sezon"), capturing searches of the form "how to catch X"; the website also lets you log in and view the forecast.

5. **Paid ads** : our metaads library did not capture this advertiser (the library only tracks a watchlist, so a miss doesn't mean no ads); no ad labels seen on the TikTok videos. Unverified.

6. **Store search** : the Turkish Play title "Balık Yakala: Av Tahmini, Mera" targets the keywords "balık / av tahmini / mera"; the English name Catch: Fishing Forecast plus a description citing 120k US and Canadian lakes lays groundwork for market expansion, but so far only the TR store charts on Play, and on iOS it has only been seen in TR and nearby stores.

### Why it made the charts

- **Translating professional weather and sea-state data into something Turkish anglers understand** : it scores each local species (lüfer, levrek, çinekop, palamut, istavrit… the official site lists 101) hour by hour, telling you what to catch today, when, what bait to use and which mera to go to. Established global apps (Fishbrain, Fishing Points) do not reach this level of granularity for Turkey.

- **The spot map is the hook** : "hundreds of spots on the map" hits what shore anglers care about most (everyone wants to know other people's secret spots), and it is also what the paywall locks.

- **Content-first distribution** : one person posting two Turkish-language fishing tip videos a day built 43k Instagram followers, and TikTok produced several 20–500k-view videos within two weeks. That was the direct driver of the Play version's growth from late October.

- **A hard paywall that earned a spot in the Turkey iOS Top Grossing top ten** : iOS reviews are full of "everything costs money", "free only shows weather", "the annual fee was charged before the trial ended" (appstore.review, 2026-08 to 10-31). That proves conversion is happening; the developer already walked it back in version 10-26 by "moving more features to free".

- **Timing** : autumn is peak season for lüfer, palamut and çinekop in the Bosphorus around Istanbul (10 to November), and the content and demand line up exactly. This is an inference from common industry knowledge, not verified item by item.

### Differentiation

Versus global majors: localization (Turkish waters, local species, local bait and rigs, local minimum sizes and closed seasons) plus "one score gives you the answer". Versus a dozen individual Turkish apps over the same period: the features are nearly identical (all compute indices from free data like Open-Meteo, Copernicus and NOAA); what really sets it apart is **distribution** . It is the only one that grew Instagram to 40k followers and produced 500k-level TikTok views, and it dared to use a hard paywall. So among the differentiators, "localization" is the entry ticket, while "content matrix + paywall" is why it runs ahead of its peers.

### How visible it is

No media coverage, no relevant discussion on X (x-radar: 90 days, only 1 unrelated results), no public revenue. It has only been seen in Turkish fishing communities (IG/TikTok). But Turkish peers have bunched up over 2026 years already, and Balık Durumu's growth this week has already passed it.

### Takeaways

- "Small country + niche hobby + free public data (Open-Meteo / Copernicus / NOAA)" makes a scorer, and the local language plus local species is the entire moat.

- Daily faceless short tip videos (one fishing fact each, app name at the end) outperform direct ads and cost almost nothing.

- Validate paying on iOS first, then go to Android and the English/US/Canada markets; write the expansion regions into the listing early.

- Use "information others hide", like fishing spots and secret locations, as the paywall hook.

### Uncertain

- Revenue: only the ranking data, Turkey iOS Sports Top Grossing #5–#11; the Searvia figure of $5K–$10K/month is quoted by the recall card, unverified.

- Whether it buys Meta/TikTok ads: no record in our library, unverified.

- Whether the US/Canada expansion has gained any traction: not visible so far (Play charts only in TR).

- Whether Cardumi / PrimeTime Fishing share the same entity: no evidence found, leaning no.

- Whether the 43k Instagram followers involved bought followers or collab-account traffic: unverified.
