Mon Loulou: Dating App · Mon Loulou

# A one-person dating app in Abidjan hit 600 daily installs and beat Tinder: Mon Loulou and the small-country chart threshold

**What it is** A local dating app from Côte d'Ivoire (web first, Android later): selfie verification, phone numbers can't be sent in chat, men pay coins to see a woman's number, and daily passes are bought in FCFA via Mobile Money.

**Why it took off** The Ivorian dating chart has a low bar: a few hundred installs a day gets you #1. It turned a 266k-follower TikTok account that used to post prayer videos (later AI family short dramas) into a product account, and in late October added Facebook install ads, with installs jumping from 14 to 4,465.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another generic dating app in Côte d'Ivoire. Pick a single country where the dating chart's bar is low and Mobile Money is widespread, build a local content account first, then use a small budget to buy installs and push up the chart. Copy the monetization: charge for the phone number, pay in coins to see numbers, and sell local-currency day passes.

Grade C: the playbook and monetization design are worth learning, but dating in French-speaking Africa is already packed with big players, regional players, and Chinese paid-acquisition operations. Its own payments and retention are not visible, and the 260k-follower legacy account that drove its start is something followers don't have. Few people know about it yet

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Mon Loulou is a local dating app built by a solo developer in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. It went live on Google Play in October 21, reached 4,465 installs in two weeks, and by November 6 ranked #1 on the Côte d'Ivoire free dating chart, ahead of no Badoo and no Tinder. It rose not because the product is strong but because the chart has a low bar: a few hundred installs a day is enough. Traffic came from a 266k-follower TikTok account that used to post prayer videos, plus Facebook install ads added in late October. The thing worth noting is the monetization: phone numbers can't be shared in chat, and men have to pay coins to see a woman's number.

### One TikTok account, no new posts after October 7

On October 3, the TikTok account @monloulou.ci posted a short drama titled "La maltraitance de la maman" (The mother's mistreatment), 52k views; the two posts before it were "The old mother's test" and "The wife and brother-in-law's betrayal." These videos are about African extended family life: bride price, mother-in-law conflicts, witchcraft, betrayal. TikTok labeled them "AI-generated," and each carries #monloulou and #abidjan.

The account is now called "♡ Mon Loulou • Rencontres ♡", with 266k followers and 1.91M total likes. The followers weren't gathered in the past month: from December 2023 to October 2024, it posted Christian prayer videos, the most popular reaching 330k views and 46k shares. It only switched to family short dramas in August 29 this year, and from September 30 began putting "monloulou.ci, the best dating site in all of Africa" directly in its videos, sending people to the website.

On October 7 it posted its last video: "Find true love at monloulou.ci," 5,096 views. By November 6, the account had posted no new videos.

Three weeks later, app installs took off.

### How big the growth got

Public Google Play data, cumulative installs:

| Date | Total installs | New |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 14 | – |
| 10-31 | 906 | +892 |
| 11-02 | 3,293 | +2,387 (in two days) |
| 11-04 | 3,903 | +610 |
| 11-05 | 4,465 | +562 |

Daily new installs from a third-party estimate (AppstoreSpy): 10-31 882,11-02 622,11-03 610,11-04 562. Before October 30 it was nearly zero; on 0,31 it jumped to nearly 900 a day, then held around 550–620 before slowly declining.

This doesn't look like a spike from one viral video (those surge in a day and drop back within days). It looks more like ad spend switched on and capped by daily budget (inferred). The TikTok account posted nothing new during this stretch, which also suggests TikTok wasn't the main source of this wave.

On November 6, the Play page in the Côte d'Ivoire store showed "1k+" downloads, a 4.2 rating, and 75 reviews. On the Appfigures Côte d'Ivoire Google Play dating free chart (11-06), it ranked #1, behind Badoo, iHappy, Tinder, SweetMeet, Bumpy, and NousDeux.

For reference: NousDeux, which also does French-speaking African dating, already had 280k installs and grew by 4,176 in the same week, close to Mon Loulou's 4,451. **The bar for #1 on the Côte d'Ivoire dating chart is a few hundred installs a day.**

### Where users come from

**Repurposing the old TikTok account (confirmed).** The follower base was built on prayer content, and the audience is religious, family-oriented, and looking for something serious like marriage, exactly the people a dating app wants. After switching to AI short dramas, the top single video reached 347k views (9-19), and "Le miroir de la vieille fille" (The spinster's mirror, 9-26) reached 190k views. AI generation keeps content costs very low. Whether the developer grew this account themselves or bought it is unverified.

**Facebook / Instagram install ads (written by the developer, not seen in the ad library).** The privacy policy was updated in October 25 and states that from version 1.6 the Android app integrates the Meta SDK, "to measure the effectiveness of our app ads and avoid showing install ads to people who already have the app"; the website has the Meta Pixel and Conversions API installed and records user source as utm_source=meta. Version 1.6 was released around late October, matching the timing of the 10-31 jump. Searching Mon Loulou in the Meta Ad Library only returns an unrelated children's product, so the advertiser page may use a different name. How much was spent is unknown.

**806 batch-generated guide pages (confirmed, results unknown).** The sitemap lists 828 URLs, and /guides has 806 guides: "Tinder alternatives", "Badoo alternatives", city pages (Abidjan, Dakar, Douala), bride price and wedding budgets, scam prevention, even "dating apps or marabout?". Publish dates all cluster around Oct 11. Search "application de rencontre Côte d'Ivoire" in French and it doesn't rank on the first screen yet. Treat it as a long-term play.

**Web first, app later.** The site's About page stresses "runs in the browser, nothing to install", aimed at people whose phone storage is full and whose data is metered by the megabyte. TikTok sent people to the web version first; the app came afterward.

**The chart itself.** Once it reached #1, people in Côte d'Ivoire searching for dating on Play saw it first, which brought in some organic installs.

No press coverage found. Posts mentioning it on X in the last ~30 days: 0. The Instagram account has only 311 followers.

### What it sells: stopping people from swapping WhatsApp too fast

On dating apps in Africa, the most common path is chatting for a few messages, then moving to WhatsApp, and the app stops being useful. The second most common problem is being asked for money. The About page lists three pain points; the second, in its own words: "a stranger asks for a little 'top-up' by the third message."

Mon Loulou's approach is to lock the number down:

- **Phone numbers and social handles can't be sent in chat** , and numbers written in photos are detected too. To get a number, you have to tap "request number", and the other person must agree. A refusal doesn't notify you.

- **A number you receive is masked** . Tapping "view" costs 100 coins (the FAQ on the pricing page says so; the summary on the same page says 200 coins per number, so the two conflict). The number disappears automatically after a few days.

- **Women get numbers for free; men, and anyone who selects "other", pay 50 coins.**

- Plans are sold per day in FCFA, paid via Mobile Money, with no auto-renewal:

| Plan | Pricing | Includes coins |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | Sign-up, selfie verification, swiping, chatting after a match |
| Express | 1,000 FCFA / 3 days (about $1.6) | 500 |
| Argent | 3,500 FCFA / 2 week | 2,000 ("see up to 10 numbers") |
| Or | 7,000 FCFA / month | 5,000, plus invisibility mode and boosted placement |

Source: monloulou.ci pricing page, 11-06. The changelog for the Nov 6 1.11 release says "Google Play payments re-enabled". The in-app purchase range on Play is $1.19–$399.09.

This design turns "exchanging contact details" into the paid step, and is publicly framed as "anti-scam, protecting women". Men pay, women don't, which fits local dating customs. A day pass at 1,000 FCFA is far easier to buy than a dollar subscription on Tinder.

Money is already flowing in the reviews, and so is friction. A Nov 3 review: "Good app, but the coins for seeing numbers broke and I can't find customer service." A Nov 4 review: "Great app, but the subscription is too expensive, at least cut the monthly to 1,500 francs." A 7,000 FCFA monthly plan is not cheap for local users. Conversion and retention are not public, so it's impossible to tell from outside whether this pricing actually makes money.

The tech stack is Supabase plus Vercel, which one person can maintain.

### Who it's competing with

This category is already crowded:

| Product | Scale | Compared with Mon Loulou |
|---|---|---|
| Tinder / Badoo / Bumble | Hundreds of millions of downloads globally; consistently top few on the Côte d'Ivoire chart | Dollar subscriptions, not split by country; doesn't police WhatsApp swaps or money requests |
| NousDeux (Senegal, NR TECH) | 280k installs, 1,712 ratings | Closest model: covers the whole French-speaking Africa region, also has city landing pages, and is much bigger already |
| Chat&Yamo | 2.27M installs | Established African dating app since 2018; built city-page SEO early |
| AfroIntroductions(Cupid Media) | 9.35M installs | Focused on cross-border and diaspora users |
| Jecontacte | 158k installs | General dating for French-speaking markets |
| Heyama | 95.5k Instagram followers | Focused on "100% African" and diaspora users |
| Ivoire Love | #20 on the Côte d'Ivoire chart with very few installs | A solo Ivorian project that appeared at the same time, built on an AI site builder, with no big account pushing traffic |
| China's outbound "Dating and Chat" portfolio (Red Panda, Evermatch, iHappy) | Occupies 6–7 spots on the Côte d'Ivoire chart | A paid-acquisition portfolio, generic English package, video chat, coin-based pricing |

There are also newer small African dating apps like Elite Ndolo, Barakameet, ZonaMatch and Zamu, all ranked 20–30. Mon Loulou isn't a new species. It reached #1 by using an existing big account plus paid ads, and that pushed a small country's small chart wide open.

### If it were you

**Bottom line** : C. What's worth learning is the playbook: use a content account plus paid ads to push a small-country category chart, and put the paywall at the "exchange contact details" step. But dating in French-speaking Africa is already saturated, Mon Loulou's own payments and retention aren't visible yet, and the key ingredient that drove its early growth, the 260k-follower old account, is not something a copycat has.

**Who it suits** : people who live in or know a particular African country (or another market with Mobile Money and dating that runs through WhatsApp), who can make short videos in the local language, who have run Facebook install ads, and who can do it solo.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone wanting to launch another general dating app in Côte d'Ivoire or French-speaking Africa (NousDeux, Chat&Yamo and the Chinese paid-acquisition portfolios are already there); anyone with no content account and no ad budget who is counting on SEO and store organic traffic; anyone who can't integrate local Mobile Money payments.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick a single country and check how many installs per day the #1 free dating app on Play in that country gets (for Côte d'Ivoire, it's a few hundred). The lower the bar, the better.

2. Launch the web version first, so people can sign up, swipe and match in the browser; add Android later.

3. Block phone numbers and social handles in chat, require the other person's consent for "request number", charge coins to see numbers, and decide who pays based on local custom.

4. Price in local currency as day and week passes, paid via Mobile Money, with no auto-renewal. Don't set the monthly too high; reviews already complain that 7,000 FCFA is expensive.

5. Make customer support easy to find. Coins that break with no one to contact is the top complaint in the reviews right now.

**How to acquire users** : a month or two ahead, build a local TikTok account around what people who are seriously looking for a partner like to watch: family-drama short series, bride price, weddings, faith. AI generation can cut costs. Put the URL directly in the videos. Once the web and app are working, integrate the Meta SDK and Conversions API, buy installs with a small budget, push the country's dating chart to #1, then use "#1" as a badge in the store listing. Batch-generated city pages and "X app alternative" pages can be rolled out alongside, but don't expect them to bring volume quickly.

**How much time you have** : the window is per country, with no single deadline. Once someone holds #1 on a small country's chart using this playbook, latecomers have to spend more to get there. Chinese paid-acquisition portfolios are already on these charts.

**Signs you've got it wrong** : ① Mon Loulou's daily installs drop back to a few dozen soon after ad spend stops, and review count stops growing, which would mean bought users don't stick and the playbook just burns cash to climb the chart; ② complaints about "expensive", "coins" and "scam" pile up and the rating falls to 3 stars, which would mean charging for numbers doesn't work locally; ③ the reverse: if after 1–2 months daily installs hold at a few hundred and reviews keep growing, the model can sustain its ad spend, and it's worth copying into the next country quickly.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **An old TikTok account repurposed as a product account** : @monloulou.ci, 266k followers, 1.91M likes. From 2023–24 and 2026-04/05 it posted prayer videos (top one 330k views). From 2026-08-29 it switched to AI-labeled African family short dramas with #monloulou. From 09-30 the videos directly promoted monloulou.ci (via TikHub).

- Inferred **Meta (FB/IG) install ads** : the privacy policy (updated 10-25) says the app has used the Meta SDK since v1.6 to measure install ads and avoid re-targeting existing users. The website runs a Pixel and Conversions API and tags sources as utm_source=meta. Installs jumped at 10-31 and then held steady at 500+ per day. No matching ads found in the Meta Ad Library.

- **Verified** **Programmatic SEO** : the sitemap has 828 URLs, including 806 guide pages (alternatives to Tinder, city-specific, bride price, scam prevention, etc.), all published in batches around 2026-10-11. Traffic they bring is unknown.

- **Verified** **Store traffic from a #1 spot on a small-country chart** : Appfigures ranks it #1 on the Côte d'Ivoire Google Play dating free chart.

## Why Mon Loulou: Dating App (ci.monloulou.app) got traction

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Mon Loulou (solo founder NOBA MEL EROS DANGUI, Abidjan) | Research date 2026-11-06

### One line

This is a local dating app for Côte d'Ivoire, built by a solo developer in Abidjan. It launched as a website first and added Android later. It reached #1 on the Côte d'Ivoire Play dating free chart, and the reason isn't product strength. It's that **the Côte d'Ivoire dating category is tiny** : 4,465 total installs and about 600 per day was enough to rank #1. The traffic came from three sources: a TikTok account run for years with 266k followers (first prayer content, then AI-generated African family drama), Meta install ads switched on in late October (the developer disclosed this in the privacy policy, but I didn't find them in the ad library), and 806 programmatically generated SEO guide pages. The real product novelty is the payment model. Phone numbers can't be shared in chat. Men pay coins to see a woman's number, and coins are bought in small FCFA amounts via Mobile Money. This targets two local pain points: users jumping to WhatsApp, and pay-to-talk scams.

### 1. Data: how big it is and how it grew

| Date | Total installs | New today | Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-29 | 14 | – | 1.7 |
| 2026-10-31 | 906 | +892 | 1.7 |
| 2026-11-02 | 3,293 | +2,387 (two-day total) | 1.9 |
| 2026-11-04 | 3,903 | +610 | 1.9 |
| 2026-11-05 | 4,465 | +562 | 1.9 |
| 2026-11-06 | 4,465 | 0 (not updated today) | 1.11 |

Source: our googleplay library app_snap / app_day_ext (daily estimates backfilled from AppstoreSpy: 10-31 882, 11-01 882, 11-02 622, 11-03 610, 11-04 562). The Play page shows "1K+" and has no rating yet.

- **Chart** : Appfigures' Côte d'Ivoire Google Play dating free chart (checked 2026-11-06). It ranks #1, followed by Badoo, iHappy, Tinder, SweetMeet, Bumpy, NousDeux and others (https://appfigures.com/top-apps/google-play/c%C3%B4te-d%E2%80%99ivoire/dating). Our library doesn't cover Côte d'Ivoire. We only see it between rank 150 and 190 on the Hong Kong and Singapore dating free charts, likely pulled in by regional roll-up charts. That doesn't mean it has real users there.

- **Curve shape** : Before 10-30, daily installs were nearly flat, then jumped from 0,10-31 to about 900 a day, held steady at 550–620 a day, and have been slowly sliding since. That looks more like **paid acquisition switched on and spent day by day** than a viral spike (see growth tactics)."

- **Comparison** : NousDeux (NR TECH, Senegal, launched 2024-11), a French-speaking African dating app, has 280k total installs and grew 7 over 4,176 days (googleplay library). That's roughly the same as Mon Loulou's 7-day growth of 4,451. So "#1 in Côte d'Ivoire" really means **a bar of a few hundred installs per day** .

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Mon Loulou |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tinder / Badoo / Bumble | Android+iOS | 2012–2014 | Global, with hundreds of millions of users. Consistently in the top few on the Côte d'Ivoire dating chart. | Global, subscriptions via card or Play billing. Not built per country, and doesn't guard against "switch to WhatsApp" or pay-to-talk scams. |
| NousDeux - Rencontres Afrique (NR TECH, Senegal) | Android + iOS + web | 2024-11-26 | 280k installs, +7 ratings over 4,176,1,712 days (googleplay library) | Targets the whole French-speaking Africa and Maghreb region. Also runs city-level SEO landing pages (nousdeux.app/application-site-de-rencontre-abidjan/). **Its model is the closest to Mon Loulou, and it's already much bigger.** |
| Chat&Yamo(Affinity Square) | Android + web | 2018 | 2.27M installs | Long-running African dating app. Built city landing-page SEO early. |
| AfroIntroductions(Cupid Media) | Android + iOS + web | 2017 | 9.35M installs | Focused on cross-border and diaspora users. Billed in USD. |
| Heyama | iOS+Android | 2023 | Instagram: 95.5k followers (from the Instagram page). Install counts unverified. | Targets "100% African" and the diaspora. Posts content on Instagram. |
| Jecontacte(Zomil) | Android | 2024-10 | 158k installs | General dating for French-speaking markets |
| Ivoire Love(Jonathan Kablan) | Android+iOS | About 2026-10 (Appfigures ID is just a little off from Mon Loulou's) | #20 on the Côte d'Ivoire dating chart. chrome-stats records 17 installs. | A solo Ivorian project that appeared at the same time, hosted on agent-neo.cloud (an AI site builder). **It was built in parallel, not copied from Mon Loulou.** |
| Elite Ndolo, Barakameet, ZonaMatch, Zamu and others | Android | 2025–2026 | All ranked #20–30 on the Côte d'Ivoire dating chart | Lots of new small African dating apps are launching |
| A Chinese-run global "Dating and Chat - XXX" portfolio (Red Panda App, Evermatch, iHappy) | Android | 2025–2026 | Holds spots 6–7 on the Côte d'Ivoire dating chart. | Acquisition portfolio. Video chat, coin-based pricing, all with generic English packaging. |

Takeaway: **this category is already crowded** , with global majors, African regional players and Chinese-run portfolios all in it. Mon Loulou isn't a new category. It reached "#1" because the bar on the dating chart in a single small country like Côte d'Ivoire is low.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **TikTok account repurposed (confirmed)** : @monloulou.ci, now named "♡ Mon Loulou • Rencontres ♡", 266k followers, 1.91M total likes, 371 videos (TikHub, 2026-11-06). TikHub pulled 128 of them, and the pattern is:
    - From 2023-12 to 2024-10 they posted Christian prayer videos. The top one hit 2024-03-31 with 330k views and 46k shares; from 2026-04 to 05 they kept posting prayer content. **Most of their follower base came from this stretch.**
    - From 2026-08-29 it switched to African family and relationship short dramas (bride price, witchcraft, extended-family conflict). **TikTok labeled these videos as AI-generated (created_by_ai=true)** . From 09-06 it added #monloulou. The two top ones: 09-19 with 347k views, and "Le miroir de la vieille fille" with 09-26k views (190).
    - From 09-30 the videos directly promoted "monloulou.ci, le meilleur site de rencontres en Afrique". At that point they pointed to the website, not the app yet.
    - The last video TikHub can pull is from 10-07. I haven't verified whether new videos were posted during the November install surge.
    - The data card mentions a third-party account, @mystere_du_m0nde, helping distribute. TikHub didn't find that account, so **unverified** .

2. **Meta (Facebook / Instagram) install ads (the developer disclosed them, but I didn't see them in the ad library)** : the privacy policy (updated 2026-10-25) says "since version 1.6 the Android app uses the Meta SDK to measure the effectiveness of our app ads and to avoid showing install ads to people who already have the app". The website also runs the Meta Pixel and Conversions API and tags user sources with utm_source=meta (https://www.monloulou.ci/confidentialite). Version 1.6 shipped around late October, which lines up with the 10-31 install jump. Searching "monloulou" / "Mon Loulou" in the Meta Ad Library only returns unrelated children's products with the same name, and no ads for this dating product. Either the advertiser page uses a different name, or country filters hide them. Our metaads library doesn't track this product.

3. **Programmatic SEO (confirmed)** : the sitemap lists 828 URLs, and the /guides page says "806 guides" across 15 topics: "alternative-a-tinder / badoo / bumble", city pages (Abidjan, Dakar, Douala), bride price and wedding budgets, scam prevention, "app de rencontre ou marabout", and more. Publication dates all fall around 2026-10-11, so these were clearly generated in batches. A Jina search for "application de rencontre Côte d'Ivoire" doesn't put it on the first screen yet, so **how much traffic SEO brings today is unknown** . It's a long-term play.

4. **Web first, then push to the app** : the about page emphasizes "use it in your browser, no install needed", and Android came later. TikTok first sent people to the web, then to Play.

5. Not found: press coverage, discussion on X (x-radar searches for monloulou over the last 30 days return 0 posts), chart-climbing free promotions, fake reviews (no rating yet).

### 4. Product and differentiation

- **Phone numbers are blocked in chat** . The only way to get one is "request number": the other person has to accept, and after three rejections the chat ends. Once received, the number is masked, and viewing it costs 100 coins. **Women share their number for free, while men and anyone choosing "other" pay 50 coins** (https://www.monloulou.ci/combien-coute-une-app-de-rencontre-en-ci).

- **Prices set for local wallets** : Express 1,000 FCFA / 3 days (about $1.6), Argent 3,500 FCFA / 2 weeks, Or 7,000 FCFA / month, **no auto-renewal** . Payment runs through Mobile Money via Jèko and GeniusPay, and Google Play billing is also available (the 1.11 release notes say "re-enabled Google Play payments"). The in-app purchase range listed on Play is $1.19–$399.09.

- Selfie verification badge (manual review), manual review plus an on-device model that automatically scans photos (detects phone numbers written in images), stories, and incognito mode. Stack is Supabase + Vercel, so one person can maintain it.

- **Differentiation** : the "lock the number, men pay to see it" design turns the most common African dating path (switching to WhatsApp right away) into a paywall. It's also marketed as "scam prevention, protecting women", so it's a payment structure that really fits the local market. Daily passes paid through Mobile Money are also easier to pay for than Tinder's USD subscription. **But that's not why it reached #1** : it's only two weeks old, with no ratings, so retention and payment aren't visible. The chart climb was driven by distribution, namely a ready-made 260k-follower content account plus paid acquisition. The differentiation matters later, in monetization and retention.

### 5. How many people know about it

Nobody really knows about it yet: no press coverage, 0 posts about it on X, no public revenue, not on TrustMRR; the Instagram @monloulourencontres has only 311 followers. The ones actually doing the same thing are regional players like NousDeux and Ivoire Love.

### 6. Takeaways

- **Build a general emotional or religious content account on TikTok first, then convert it into a product account** : the audience for prayer and family short dramas overlaps with people who are seriously looking for a partner and getting ready to marry, and AI-generated short dramas keep content costs very low.

- Category charts in small countries have a very low bar: a few hundred installs a day can get you #1, which works as social proof in the store and also brings in organic traffic.

- Monetization gets stuck at the "exchange contact info" step, and is priced differently by gender; prices are set as daily passes in local currency, paid via Mobile Money, with no auto-renewal.

- Programmatic SEO: publish 800 localized guides at once, including "alternative-à-X" pages that target competitor keywords, plus city pages.

- Launch the web version first, then the app, and use the Meta SDK with the Conversions API to close the loop on paid acquisition.

### 7. Uncertain

- Whether Meta ads were run and how much was spent: we only have the developer's word for it, and nothing shows up in the ad library.

- During the November install surge, did the TikTok account still post new videos (the latest one TikHub could pull is 10-07)?

- Did the third-party account @mystere_du_m0nde help distribute it?

- Retention and payments: there are no ratings at all; can the CI handle 500+ installs a day, and can the paid users be recouped through men buying coins?

- Was the early religious content on this TikTok account made by the owner, or was the account bought?
