A South African user asks to "switch to rand": a Turkish studio copied an AI quoting app, and the real opening is outside the US

What it is An AI quoting app for small contractors: snap a photo of the job site or describe the work, and in seconds get a line-by-line materials and labor estimate that can be sent to the client, converted into an invoice, and billed monthly or yearly.

Why it took off The US app SimplyWise has already shown contractors will pay an annual fee for AI estimates. The Turkish paid-acquisition studio AppNation copied it, stuffing titles with category keywords, discounting the price by half, and launching on both platforms across many countries. Five weeks later it had reached the US Business Top Grossing chart, where the bar is low.

BHow you could follow it Don't go head-to-head with SimplyWise and twenty clones in the US English market. Pick a country or language and build a local version: set materials and labor prices to local rates, use category keywords in the local language to capture store search, and pair them with real job-site ad creative.

Grade B: contractors' willingness to pay a subscription is already proven, and no one has built a local version outside the US yet. But the US home market is already crowded, local price data has to be gathered yourself, and acquisition requires paid ads. AppNation has only just started adding local currencies. Nobody really knows about it yet

AppNation in Istanbul (maker of the chat app Genie, which hit 2,000+ million installs) launched a "photo to renovation quote" app called Cost AI at the end of September. It isn't original: it copies the US app SimplyWise Cost Estimator, which has 570k installs on Google Play and reached #7 on the US Business Top Grossing chart. Cost AI racked up 5,000+ installs in five weeks and hovered around #99 on the US Top Grossing chart. It didn't break out on its own; what's worth watching is the category, and the two earliest bad reviews that expose a gap: users aren't in the US, so the prices don't match.

"I'm in South Africa, not the US"

On Oct 12, a user named Khaya Vumsindo gave Cost AI 3 star on Google Play: "Why can't I switch the money to rand? I'm in South Africa, not the US." Three days earlier, another South African user, Marco, left just one line: "change doller to Rand".

On Nov 5, AppNation replied to both with the same message: "Sorry, rand isn't supported yet, this feature is in the works." The same day it shipped a new version, with release notes saying: "We heard you! Cost AI now shows currency by country, and estimates reflect prices and materials where you are."

Under SimplyWise, the model it copies, there are even more of the same complaints. On Oct 24 a Canadian user wrote: "Fun, but it's useless for Canadians. You can't enter a postal code to get local prices, and the same items vary a lot between estimates." On Oct 26 another user gave it 1 stars outright: "Way off from the actual prices here, and paying for the subscription for a while didn't change that."

This category is already packed in the US, while contractors outside the US are still looking for a version that prices things at local rates.

What it is

A quoting tool for small contractors: plumbers, roofers, painters, flooring installers, renovators. Take a photo on site or describe the job in plain language, the AI asks follow-up questions about details you missed, then lists a line-by-line materials and labor breakdown with a total. Edit it, send it to the client, convert it to an invoice with one tap, and collect payment inside the app.

The store page lists a few things SimplyWise doesn't: every AI edit appears as a reviewable diff and changes nothing until you approve it; each job records both the quoted price and the actual cost; and clients get before-and-after renderings and a timeline.

It's a subscription. On iOS, Pro is $8.99, and the annual plan is $98.99. On Play, in-app purchases run from $4.99 to $98.99 (Google Play store page, 11-06). SimplyWise is $29.99 a month or $239.99 a year; Cost AI's annual price is less than half of that.

The numbers: not many installs, but enough to reach the top chart

Figures come from the Google Play and App Store store pages and charts, as of 11-06.

5,000 installs was enough to reach the US Top Grossing chart, because the bar there is low and the users are business owners willing to pay for an annual plan. The same day, #94 was Winpal with 13k installs, and #110 was Check Writer with 9,000 installs. The third-party estimator Peekly puts SimplyWise on Play at about $100k a month; extrapolating from that, #99 probably earns a few thousand dollars a month (estimate).

It ranks #17 to #169 on the same chart in 195 countries including India, Nigeria, Vietnam, and Turkey, with nearly identical positions. That looks more like small-country category charts simply inheriting an aggregate chart, not real multi-country traction (inference). Install counts also jump in steps every two or three days (+636, +790, +475), which reflects Play's counting update cycle, not a surge.

How it got these 5,000 installs

Grabbing category keywords. The title is "Cost AI: Construction Estimate," and the description repeats "Cost Estimator AI" and "Cost AI Estimator." The tagline "Describe the job, or take a photo of the site" is nearly identical to SimplyWise's Facebook ad copy: "Take a photo. Describe the project. Instantly get an estimate." SimplyWise is running 568 ads on Meta, paying to teach contractors that they need an "AI estimate app." Those people go back to the store and search, and Cost AI is waiting in the results.

The studio's paid-acquisition playbook (inference). In March 2025, @AIAdsApps, an X account that dissects AI app ads, posted a long thread on AppNation: annual revenue of about $15M, mostly from paid ads, 31,960 TikTok ads in a single month, lots of "real person reviews" acted by AI presenters, and up to 70% of ad spend refunded through a Turkish government export subsidy. Whether Cost AI itself is running ads, and how much, can't be seen from outside.

Both platforms, many countries at once. The Play version launched at the end of September, and the iOS version followed a month later, in 18 languages.

No organic spread. 11-06 searching TikTok for "Cost AI estimate app" or "construction estimate app ai" turns up not a single Cost AI video; the results are all SimplyWise, Handoff, and BidKing. Nobody has mentioned it on X in the past two months.

Ratings are growing faster than installs. On Play, ratings went from 8 to 37 in 8 days (the store page shows 11-06 reviews and 39 stars, 4.8), roughly one rating for every 50 installs. Most likely the app is actively prompting users for ratings (inference); the end of this update's notes says exactly that: "Leave us a review on the Play Store."

So its 5,000 installs can be explained by "copy a validated category + grab keywords + half-price + a studio's distribution muscle." None of the new features shows up as a reason.

What contractors praise and complain about

There are still too few reviews of Cost AI itself, but the reviews under SimplyWise show clearly what this group of users wants.

The praise is almost all about one thing: it thought of something I forgot. "It caught fasteners, which I often leave out of quotes" (9-15); "I ran 3 jobs myself and it came within $100 of my numbers" (9-22); "I've held a contractor's license for 30 years and kept underquoting and losing money" (10-25).

The complaints are also concentrated:

  • Prices are inaccurate and not local: "It says it uses Home Depot prices, but they're way off, and I have to edit every line" (10-11); "Material prices really need updating, I got in trouble for underquoting" (10-15); "I only use one brand of paint, and it filled in Valspar from Home Depot on its own" (10-16).
  • Charges: "They promised a free week trial, then charged me $9.99 on the spot, and I still couldn't get into the app" (10-15); "I canceled months ago and they kept charging me, after a dozen emails" (10-14).

Translated into product requirements: materials and labor prices have to match the user's location, letting contractors save the brands and unit prices they use, and subscription rules have to be spelled out clearly. The first is exactly what South African and Canadian users are complaining about, and it's the hardest thing for an app built only for the US, using US home-improvement chain prices, to get right.

Who it's competing with

There's no shortage of competitors:

  • SimplyWise Cost Estimator: the category creator, launched in 2024 September. Its product line also includes receipts, mileage, and AI phone answering, with its own TikTok account and contractor creator content.
  • Joist, Invoice Simple, Invoice Fly: established quoting and invoicing tools holding #2, #5, and #6 on the US Business Top Grossing chart. AI isn't their selling point, but contractors are already using them.
  • Handoff(1Build): AI quoting plus a real materials price library, 46k installs on Play.
  • A wave of same-name clones: in 2026 there were about twenty iOS apps called "X: Cost Estimator." Brite Technologies' Construction+ (353 ratings in the US store, #165 Top Grossing) is seen as the best of them, and most of the rest have zero to a few hundred ratings.
  • Voice quoting and trade-specific startups: BidKing, Jefe, TurboQuote, QuoteIQ and others, posting their own content on TikTok. TurboQuote has a video with 9,515 views hammering the pain point: "same job, 3 AI runs, 3 different prices."
  • ChatGPT, Claude: they can produce a quote directly, but not a tidy, client-ready document or one you can turn into an invoice.

Other countries and languages look different. 11-06 search the App Store: in Germany, "KI Kostenvoranschlag" is led by BauSmart (73 ratings); in France, "devis travaux IA" is led by ATTIX (39); in Spain, the top results for "presupuesto obra IA" all have 0 to 1 ratings; in Australia, search in English and Cost AI ranks first, but with only 0 ratings. These markets have people working them, and none has broken out.

If it were you

Verdict: don't enter the US English market. SimplyWise is ahead, the twenty clones are behind, and studios that buy paid acquisition, like AppNation, are already there. What you can do is a "local version": pick one country or language, make the materials and labor prices local, and sell to small local contractors.

Who it suits: a team of 1–2 people, one of whom runs Meta or TikTok ads and can work out customer acquisition cost. Ideally someone who has lived in the target country or worked in construction or building materials there, and knows the local suppliers, unit prices and quote formats (Germany's Angebot and France's devis each have fixed layouts and tax lines).

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to fight SimplyWise head-on in the US; anyone who can build an app but not run ads (nobody in this category gets found through TikTok. Contractors find you by searching "cost estimator" in the store or by seeing an ad); anyone without local price data who plans to let an LLM guess prices (the most common complaint in bad reviews is inaccurate prices).

How to build it: start with one country. Photo or description → AI asks follow-up questions → line-by-line materials and labor list → PDF sent to the client → converted to an invoice. Put the effort into prices: connect to the public prices of a local building-supply chain, or have users enter their usual materials and day rates on first use, and calculate everything from those. Use Cost AI's subscription tiers as a template (a few dollars a month, roughly $100 a year), and state the trial and billing rules clearly.

How to acquire users: use the local-language category terms in your title (German "Kostenvoranschlag," French "devis"), and pack the description with synonyms the way Cost AI does. For ad creative, copy SimplyWise: real job-site footage, one photo, a quote document in seconds. In local contractor Facebook groups and forums, post comparisons like "how far off is the AI quote from my own?"

Timing: launch before next spring's renovation season, meaning before March 2027. AppNation added per-country currency in November 5, which shows it sees the gap too. Once its 18 language versions get local prices, your window closes.

Signs you've misread it: ① Cost AI drops out of the US Top Grossing Business top 150 after two or three weeks, suggesting followers can't make money in this category, and the local version's price point may not support paid acquisition. ② SimplyWise launches local prices for Canada, the UK and Australia, and the English-speaking slots are gone. ③ The reverse: BauSmart in Germany or a French player climbs to several thousand ratings within six months, showing local demand is real but someone got there first.

A closing thought for everyone building products: once a category is proven to make money in the US, the first to crowd in are the studios that buy paid acquisition, shipping the same English app at a lower price. What they struggle most to serve is the part that only works with local data.

Why Cost AI: Construction Estimate (co.appnation.costestimator) made it onto the charts

Bottom line

This is a follower product that did not "break out" on its own. AppNation, a Turkish AI clone studio (the one behind Genie), took the positioning of the category leader SimplyWise Cost Estimator (570k Play installs; #7 US Top Grossing Business) and built a "photo/description → AI renovation quote" app with nearly identical titles and descriptions at a lower price. In its first 5 weeks it reached about 5.3k installs, sitting at the tail of the US Top Grossing Business chart (hovering around #97–#101), while its ranks in 17 other countries (#185–#195) were basically carried over from the same aggregate chart. The recall score is high mainly because "very few installs yet still charted," but that chart has a low bar, so the rank says little about money. What's worth watching is the category itself: studios like AppNation that live on paid acquisition have now entered against SimplyWise, which suggests "AI contractor quoting" is being treated as a validated monetization category.

How to read these numbers:

  • The bar for US Top Grossing Business #99 is low. The same day, #94 was Winpal with 13k installs, and #110 was Check Writer with 9k installs (chart_rank 2026-11-06). Peekly estimates SimplyWise, at #7, at roughly $100k/month on Play (Peekly, 2026-11), and AppGazers estimates $30K–$62.6K over the last 324 days on Play. Extrapolating from that, #99 probably makes a few thousand dollars a month (unverified; this is a calculation).
  • Ranks #185–#195 in other countries are nearly the same number, which fits the pattern that small-country category charts just mirror the aggregate chart. They shouldn't be read as evidence of traction in multiple countries.
  • Install counts jump in steps (636 / 790 / 475), matching Play's install-count update schedule rather than a surge. A few hundred installs a day fits the scale of a small paid-acquisition test (unverified).

Verdict: this category is far from empty. SimplyWise has already proven it makes money, and since 2026 roughly twenty copycat "Cost Estimator" apps have appeared on iOS. Cost AI is one of the more aggressive followers, backed by AppNation's paid acquisition and ASO muscle.

3. Growth tactics

  • Reusing the studio's paid acquisition playbook (inferred, medium confidence): AppNation's flagship Genie has 21M installs, and is still growing 7 days later at 479k (Google Play library), mainly through paid ads. X account @AIAdsApps 2025-03 wrote a long thread breaking down AppNation: annual revenue of about $15M, "growth mainly driven by paid ads", 31,960 TikTok ads in one month, heavy use of AI-actor UGC creatives, and Turkish government subsidies (70% of ad spend refunded, up to $400k per app) (x.com/AIAdsApps/status/1897004429104308712). Our Meta / Google / TikTok ad libraries don't track AppNation, so we can't see Cost AI's own ads and can only say "probably running ads".
  • ASO keyword stuffing: the Play title is "Cost AI: Construction Estimate," and the description repeats "Cost Estimator AI" and "Cost AI Estimator," packing category terms in. This is the playbook @AIAdsApps describes for AppNation: keywords first, brand second. The description and SimplyWise's tagline ("Take a photo. Describe the project. Instantly get an estimate.," from SimplyWise's ad copy in the metaads library) are nearly identical, effectively riding search demand SimplyWise built with 568 Meta ads.
  • Broad rollout across platforms and languages: by late October on Play it had charted in 18 countries; on iOS it's live in 2026-10-23 with 18 languages.
  • TikTok / X / Reddit: a TikHub search for "Cost AI estimate app" and "construction estimate app ai" turned up no posts from Cost AI. What came back were SimplyWise, Handoff, BidKing and others. x-radar finds no Cost AI or AppNation mentions in the last 60 days. No evidence of organic word-of-mouth.
  • Ratings: on Play, ratings went from 8 to 8 in 37 days, averaging 4.8 stars; iOS sits at 4.4 stars. Ratings are growing faster than installs (about one rating per 50 installs), which may mean the app is prompting users for ratings in-app (unverified; we haven't captured review text yet).

4. Differentiation

From the description, it adds a few things beyond SimplyWise: "every AI change shows as a reviewable diff, nothing changes without approval," quote vs. actual cost comparison, before/after renders, client-facing timelines, one-tap quote-to-invoice sending, and in-app payments. "Reviewable AI changes" and "quoted vs. actual" are somewhat novel. But these aren't why it's growing: 5 weekly installs at 5k is fully explained by studio paid acquisition, keyword stuffing and low pricing, and no user or press is mentioning these features. Its real differentiators are price (annual $98.99 vs. SimplyWise's $239.99) and the studio's distribution muscle.

5. How many people know about it

  • Cost AI itself: few people know about it yet. No press coverage, no mentions on X or TikTok, and no public revenue figures.
  • The category: SimplyWise's revenue shows up on estimate sites like Peekly and AppGazers, and SimplyWise's own blog runs heavy SEO ("AI estimating app cost," "SimplyWise reviews"). With roughly twenty same-named copycats on iOS in 2026 year, this category is already crowded.

6. What others can borrow

  • Follower playbook: find a vertical AI tool that has proven it makes money but prices high (SimplyWise at $240 a year), copy the positioning, stuff keywords into the title, undercut on price by half, then use existing paid acquisition and ASO to roll out across multiple countries and both platforms at once.
  • A niche B2B crowd (contractors) will pay for weekly or annual subscriptions, so even a small install base can chart in Top Grossing.
  • To differentiate: "reviewable AI changes" and "quoted vs. actual cost" address real pain points for contractors (TurboQuote's video makes exactly this point: "the same job gives you 3 quotes 3 ways", 9,515 views).

7. Still unclear

  • Whether Cost AI is running Meta / TikTok ads and how much: our ad libraries don't track AppNation, so we need to add it to the watchlist.
  • Actual revenue: the Top Grossing #99 figure is an estimate converted to money; iOS data for this app isn't in our App Store chart database.
  • Retention and renewals: no review text yet, so no user feedback to go on.
  • Its US top-grossing rank is holding steady (97–101), which could mean a small base of annual subscribers or early trial-to-paid conversion. Watch the next 2–4 weeks to see whether it climbs.
