Watch Dramas, Earn Cash: Save Rp700K to Withdraw. How FreeDrama Hit 15M Installs, Then Faded
What it is A free Android short-drama app. You watch episodes and watch ads to save coins. It claims you can withdraw once you hit Rp700K (about $42). All the money comes from ads.
Why it blew up The short-drama export wave hit 2025, and Indonesians were searching for "apps that pay." "Watch dramas, get paid" plus six months of "can you actually withdraw, is it a scam" reviews and news pushed it to 15M installs. The name FreeDrama is also a store search term.
DHow you could follow it I don't recommend following it. If you really want to, borrow only the idea of "using rewarded ads to pay back free dramas." Copy Melolo's low bar and real payouts, pick a language the big platforms haven't localized yet, and get users through local "earn money" app reviewers.

FreeDrama's Google Play description only says "100% free dramas." You only find out after opening it that it's an app where you "watch dramas and ads to earn coins, and cash out at Rp700,000." It launched in June 2025, and in Indonesian "earn money by watching dramas" discussions it reached 15.2M installs. Now it adds only a thousand or two a day and sits around #100+ on Argentina's Entertainment chart. Below: what it is, where the users came from, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and whether you should follow it.
A points counter and a Rp700K withdrawal threshold
On Sep 2025 15, the West Java local news site Jabar Ekspres published an article titled "Does FreeDrama Really Pay?" It describes the app like this: each episode or ad you watch makes a points counter pop up on screen. Once the points reach a threshold you can exchange them for money. There are also daily check-in and "watch ads" task bonuses.
The only number the reporter flagged was the minimum withdrawal of Rp700,000, roughly $42 at the exchange rate then. The article notes that real earning apps usually start withdrawals at Rp10,000 or Rp20,000, so users can verify payouts first. FreeDrama users reported that once their balance got close to the threshold, the app started throwing errors and verification got harder, and the money never came out.
Seven months later, on Apr 2026 15, Kabar Tangsel published "Can FreeDrama Make Money? Beware of Scams!" and named the developer, Game Laws. It quoted a user: "Sudah sampai level tinggi tapi tetap tidak bisa withdraw" (I reached a high level but still can't withdraw). Other users simply called it ad farming.
By Oct 2026 12, Google Play reviews still included: "money withdrawal is fake! it's a scam! do not waste time on this app!"
That's the app that picked up 15M installs.
What it is
An Android short-drama app, using the standard content library of China's overseas short-drama exports: sweet romance, suspense, period dramas, time-travel. The store page talks only about "free drama watching" from start to finish and never mentions money. Inside the app it's a different product: coins, check-ins, watch-ads tasks, levels, withdrawals. No in-app purchases, and the store lists it as containing ads.
The developer Game Laws looks like an anonymous shell account. The contact email is a random-letter Gmail, and the website is a subdomain with a random word. The same account also has payoutdrama, which puts "earn cash by completing drama tasks" right on its store page, plus a casual game called Bus Traffic Rush. The account may have originally made games and was later repurposed or sold (inference).
It's not a new app, it's an old shell that cooled off
The store page now lists the launch date as Aug 2026 6, which easily makes it look like it "hit 15M in just over two months." It didn't. The earliest version findable on APKPure is from Jun 1.0.0.1 2025 27, and for the next six months it updated almost every two weeks. Another third-party site, AppBrain, records the listing date as February 2026. So the store date has been reset at least twice, possibly after delisting and relisting, or from changed listing info (inference, cause unverified).
| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2025-06-27 | First version released (APKPure) |
| 2025-09 | Indonesia starts buzzing, Jabar Ekspres publishes an article |
| 2025-11 to 2026-04 | Peak of Indonesian YouTube reviews and "is it a scam" articles over six months |
| 2026-05 base | About 14.8M cumulative, still adding 6K to 15K a day (third-party estimate) |
| From ¥2026-06 | Daily adds fall to a few thousand |
| 2026-08 | Store date reset again; later updates only say "fixed bugs" |
| 2026-11-06 | Cumulative 15,160,659, +7 in the last 14,315 days (Google Play installs) |
So nearly all of the 15M came from the second half of 2025 through spring 2026. Now it only bounces between #160 and #197 on Argentina's free Entertainment chart, and it's not on any other country's chart.
The ratings are odd too: 15M installs but only 3,732 ratings, and those are only 1-star and 5-star, with none at 2 to 4 stars. From Oct 29 to Nov 6 (8 days), the 5-star count went from 2,495 to 3,392, while new installs in the same period were only about 14K. That's roughly one 16-star rating for every 5 new users. Normal apps don't come close to that ratio, which usually means rewards are being traded for good reviews (inference).
Why it took off: watch dramas, get paid, plus the "is it a scam" debate
It sits at the intersection of two demands. 2025 was the year overseas short dramas exploded. In Indonesia and South Asia, huge numbers of people search "aplikasi penghasil uang" (apps that make money). "Watch dramas and get paid" fused those two things together.
Negative discussion is also exposure. On Indonesian YouTube, "Aplikasi Free Drama Apakah Membayar?" (Does the FreeDrama App Actually Pay?, 2026-01-16) got 54K views, and there are tutorial videos like "How to Withdraw from FreeDrama." Local news sites keep publishing "can you withdraw" and "beware of scams" pieces. Each one keeps the search term "FreeDrama" hot, and people who see it download it with a "let's just try" mindset.
The name is the search term. Users searching "free drama" in the store find it directly. The store page doesn't mention money, which sidesteps Google Play's review of earnings claims.
Where the users came from, summarized:
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesian "earn money" app reviews and word of mouth | YouTube reviews with 54K views, several tutorial videos | Confirmed |
| Local news articles on "is it a scam" | Jabar Ekspres, Kabar Tangsel, Pikiran Rakyat, Mamikos | Confirmed to exist, how much traffic it drove is unknown |
| Store search riding a generic term | The name is literally FreeDrama | Inferred |
| Invite friends for coins | Standard feature for this kind of app | Inferred |
| Facebook ads | No record of its ads found | No evidence doesn't mean it didn't run ads |
| TikTok, X | Nothing relevant found | None |
Where the money comes from
It's all ad revenue. Users watch rewarded and interstitial ads nonstop to build up coins, and the developer takes the ad share. The cash-out threshold is set at Rp700,000, and as users get close the conditions keep rising (more ads, daily logins, higher levels), so the app almost never has to pay out real money. VnExpress in Vietnam ran a story in Oct 19 2026 on this whole category of short-drama apps: they hand you a big-looking balance, the rewards shrink over time, the cash-out line never gets reached, and along the way they push you to install other apps.
Outside observers can't tell how much it earns. At 15M installs, mostly in a market like Indonesia where ad rates are low, the ad revenue per user is small. The business depends on volume and on users' time.
Who it's competing with
This model is already crowded, and big companies have entered. Install counts are from Google Play (11-06):
| Competitors | Launched | Installs | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| FreeDrama: Short Drama & Reels(Kuku) | 2026-04 | 42.6M, +7M in 1.22 days, #5 on the US Entertainment free chart | Same name, same "watch dramas, get cash" pitch, backed by India's Kuku FM, which advertises heavily on Facebook. Game Laws got the name first, but volume has gone to Kuku |
| LuckyDramas – Watch & Earn | 2025-06 | 14.2M, 7 days +73k | Same model in the same period, targeting Thailand, still growing |
| Spark Dramas: Drama & Cash | 2025-09 | 2.67M, 7 days +99k | Targeting Nigeria, #6 on Entertainment |
| DramaCash, DM Short Drama, TikShort, and others | Launched in succession throughout 2026 | 2.5M to 15M | The same template in different skins, mostly from individual shell accounts |
| Melolo | 2024-11 | 147M | Legitimate platform. Coins convert to the Indonesian e-wallet DANA, withdrawals start at Rp10,000, and payouts actually happen |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | 2025-12 | About 84M | TikTok's official free short dramas, with built-in traffic, no cash promises |
A tactic that was fresh a year ago now has two sides: big platforms like TikTok and Melolo that actually pay or are truly free, and a dozen reskinned clones fighting over the same users in Indonesia, Thailand, and Nigeria.
If it were you
The short verdict: Don't follow it. FreeDrama is already dead, and its high-threshold withdrawal approach runs into Google Play's deceptive-behavior rules. In the "watch dramas, earn money" model, players with licensed content, paid-acquisition budgets, and real payouts, like TikTok, Kuku, and Melolo, already exist.
Who it fits: Overseas companies that already have short-drama licensing, ad-monetization experience, and a paid-acquisition team, and want to try a "low-threshold, real-payout" rewards version in a country no one covers yet.
Who it doesn't fit: Indie developers and small teams. You don't have licensing leverage or paid-acquisition budget. What's left is "name-riding plus a withdrawal lure," and that turns out to be the fifteenth reskinned clone, which could be delisted at any time.
How to actually do it: There's one thing worth borrowing: use rewarded ads to pay for the free short dramas. Follow Melolo's model. The bar is low, and people really pay. Build word of mouth with small cash-out screenshots. Pick a language the big platforms haven't localized yet (e.g. Bengali, Vietnamese, Swahili), and add local-language subtitles to the content.
How to get users: Local "earn-money app" reviewers and YouTube tutorials (FreeDrama proves this channel works), plus local keywords in the app name that users actually search for.
When is the window: Vietnamese media is already covering this category broadly, and platforms will tighten eventually. The window is measured in months, not years (inference).
What would mean we got it wrong: If Kuku's FreeDrama or other similar apps were still growing steadily through H1 of 2027, weren't pulled from Google Play, and a few small players emerged who got real payers and turned their reviews positive, that would show the model still has room and is worth another look.

Bottom line
The store page says "100% free short dramas," but inside the app it's a rewarded-ad arbitrage shell: watch dramas and ads to earn coins, withdraw at Rp700,000. It launched 2025-06 and was hot in Indonesia's "aplikasi penghasil uang" (earn-money apps) content scene from 2025-09 to 2026-04, reaching 15M installs. Now it's adding only 1–3 thousand a day. The store listing date has been reset, and the ratings look wiped clean, so it's a stale shell. It broke out for two reasons: the withdrawal bait drove word of mouth and review traffic, and the generic name "FreeDrama". The product itself has no real differentiation.
1. The baseline: what the data says

Key points:
- It's not a new app that launched 2026-08. The first release date in the database, 2026-08-06, is the date after a store reset. The earliest version on APKPure is 1.0.0.1, dated 2025-06-27, and after that it was updated almost every two weeks from 2025 to 7 – December (https://apkpure.com/freedrama/com.Free.Drama/versions). AppBrain's "listed" date is 2026-02-02, and the developer account has been "active since 2024 December" (https://www.appbrain.com/dev/Game+Laws/). So the first-release date has been reset at least twice (2026-02, 2026-08), suggesting it was delisted and re-listed, or its info was edited or it expanded to new stores.
- 15M installs were built up from 2025-07 to 2026-05, reaching 14.8M by late May. Growth has been slowing steadily since the start of the curve we can see. The "2+ months, 15.2M" figure from the recall was a misreading caused by the reset first-listing date.
- The ratings look suspicious. 15M installs have only 3,732 ratings (0.025%), and 2–4-star are all 0. AppBrain's developer page once showed "Rating count 0", which fits with ratings being cleared after relisting (unverified). Over the 8 days from 10-29 to 11-06, the 5-star count rose from 2,495 to 3,392 (+897), while the 1-star count dropped from 499 to 339. In the same period about 14k new installs came in, so roughly 6% of new users gave 5 stars, far above a normal rate. It's highly likely the app rewards users in-app for five-star reviews, or reviews are being bought (unverified).
2. What it actually is: one story on the store page, another inside the app
- The store description only mentions free short dramas and says nothing about money (Google Play page, scraped via Jina).
- The real mechanics in the app, per Indonesian media:
- Jabar Ekspres 2025-09-15, "Aplikasi FreeDrama Benarkah Bisa Hasilkan Uang?": watch dramas and ads to earn points, with daily check-ins and ad-watching tasks as rewards. Minimum withdrawal Rp700,000. Users report bugs right when they near the withdrawal threshold, harder verification, and money that never gets paid out (https://jabarekspres.com/berita/2025/09/15/aplikasi-freedrama-benarkah-bisa-hasilkan-uang/).
- Kabar Tangsel 2026-04-15, "Aplikasi Freedrama Apa Bisa Menghasilkan Uang, Awas Scam!": names "dikembangkan oleh Game Laws" (developed by Game Laws) and says it's widely discussed on social media and forums. One user called it ad farming. Withdrawal conditions keep escalating: more ads, daily logins, higher levels (https://kabartangsel.com/aplikasi-freedrama-apa-bisa-menghasilkan-uang-awas-scam/).
- Mamikos summarizes the articles above and also cites similar pieces from Pikiran Rakyat, detikpost, and utamapos (https://mamikos.com/info/aplikasi-free-drama-dapat-uang-benarkah-ini-faktanya-qna-gnr/).
- Play review 2026-10-12: "money withdrawal is fake! it's a scam!" (Play page / AppBrain).
- The same account's payoutdrama (com.payout.drama) puts "watch short dramas, complete tasks, get cash" straight into its store listing. It has only 121 reviews and was last updated 2026-09-03 (Google Play page). The account also has a casual game, Bus Traffic Rush (com.yf.btr). The developer is "Game Laws", email [email protected], with an official site on a random-word subdomain, pseudoisomer.fedraa.com (googleplay app table). This is a typical anonymous shell account. It may have started as a game account and later been reused or sold (unverified).
Where the money comes from: users watch a large number of rewarded videos and interstitial ads to earn coins, and the developer takes the ad revenue. The withdrawal minimum is set very high (Rp700k) and keeps getting raised, so almost nobody pays real money. This is the arbitrage model of "watch dramas, earn money" apps. VnExpress 2026-10-19 specifically covered this category: a big balance is shown up front, rewards shrink over time, the withdrawal threshold is never reached, and users are pushed to install other software (https://e.vnexpress.net/news/tech/tech-news/short-drama-apps-lure-millions-with-promises-of-easy-cash-deliver-ads-and-malware-instead-5131544.html).
3. Growth tactics: where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesian "earn money" app reviews and word of mouth | Indonesian-language YouTube videos: "Aplikasi Free Drama Apakah Membayar?" (TEKNOTenar Media, 2026-01-1.65M views), "Cara Menarik Uang FreeDrama" (2026-04-08,4 thousand), "Cara Menggunakan Aplikasi FreeDrama" (2025-11-03,6.8 thousand). Users on Instagram also complain they can't withdraw. | Yes |
| SEO "is it a scam" articles from Indonesian local media | 2025-09 Jabar Ekspres, 2026-04 Kabar Tangsel, plus Pikiran Rakyat, Mamikos and others. These articles are also driving search traffic to it. | Yes (exists); how much traffic it drives is unverified |
| Store search: generic name | The package and title are FreeDrama / Free Drama, so searching "free drama" hits it directly. After Kuku 2026-04 launched a same-named app, search volume for the term went up, and the Game Laws version may still be getting misdirected installs. | Speculation, unverified |
| "Invite friends, get coins" referral loop | Standard for this kind of app. Indonesian media mention the "misi" task system. | Not verified |
| Paid Meta acquisition | In the metaads library's app_link data, com.Free.Drama has no linked advertiser (only Kuku's com.drama.free appears, with the page "Best Global Short Dramas" running 49 ads) | Not found. The library only tracks a watchlist, so this doesn't prove it didn't spend. |
| TikTok / X | Searching TikHub for "free drama penghasil uang" and "aplikasi freedrama" turned up no related videos for it. x-radar shows 0 posts in the past year. | No evidence |
| Buying reviews or prompting positive reviews | Ratings only come in 1 stars and 5 stars; 8 days, +897 5-star ratings | Highly suspicious, unverified |
Timeline (reconstructed):
- 2025-06-27:1.0.0.1 launch.
- 2025-07 to 09: frequent iteration (APK grew from 106MB to 96–130MB).
- 2025-09: buzz in Indonesia, Jabar Ekspres publishes a piece.
- 2025-11 to 2026-04: peak of Indonesian YouTube reviews and local media scam debate.
- 2026-02: store listing reset on launch day.
- By the end of 2026-05 it hit 14.8M installs, adding around 10K a day.
- Starting 2026-06, daily adds fell to a few thousand.
- 2026-08: reset again, 1.0.3.0 / 1.0.3.1 released, then only "fixed bugs" updates.
- 2026-10/11: adding 1–3K a day, only charting in Argentina's entertainment chart at #160–197.
4. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FreeDrama: Short Drama & Reels(Kuku Technologies,com.drama.free) | Android | 2026-04 | 42.6M installs, +1.22M in 7 days, #5 in the US entertainment Top Free chart (googleplay library) | Same name, same model (freedrama.app says "Watch Free & Earn Cash", cash-out only in India). Behind it is India's Kuku FM, which runs heavy Meta ads. Game Laws' version came first by name, but big-company copies have already overtaken it in volume. The "Mebigo Labs 35M" in the recall card refers to this one (Mebigo Labs is Kuku FM's entity). |
| LuckyDramas – Watch & Earn(AID Japan) | Android | 2025-06 | 14.2M, 7 days +73k | Launched around the same time with the same watch-to-earn model, targeting Thailand, and still growing |
| Spark Dramas: Drama & Cash(Fortune-Star) | Android | 2025-09 | 2.67M, +99K in 7 days, #6 in Nigeria's entertainment chart | Targeting Africa |
| DramaCash / DM Short Drama / TikShort / DR Dramas / Drama Plus / Drama Blitz / Luck Dramas | Android | Launched in succession throughout 2026 | From 1,500 to 2.5M, varying | Same template with a reskin, mostly personal shell accounts registered with Gmail |
| Drama Fun: Win Coins(com.drama.fun) | Android | About 2026-01 | AppBrain records about 4M, 2026-08 removed | The recall card says it sits under Game Laws, but online information points to another developer, "GangareBoy". Its relationship to Game Laws is unverified |
| Melolo | Android | 2024-11 | 147M | A legitimate large platform, with coin-to-DANA cash-outs (minimum Rp10,000, dorangadget). Low threshold, real payouts. |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | Big-company features | 2025-12 | 84M (AnyShort report citing the googleplay library) | TikTok's official free short drama, with built-in traffic |
| ReelShort / DramaBox / FreeReels | iOS / Android | 2022–2024 | 100M+ | Legitimate paid or free-with-ads, no cash promises |
5. Why it took off
- It hits the intersection of two trends: overseas short drama booming since 2025, plus long-standing demand in Indonesia and South Asia for "aplikasi penghasil uang" (earn-money apps). "Watch dramas and earn cash" is hugely tempting to lower-income users (Jabar Ekspres, Kabar Tangsel, Mamikos).
- Negative talk also drives volume: "Can you actually cash out from FreeDrama?" review videos and scam articles have run in Indonesia for over half a year. Each one spreads exposure and search terms, and users install with a "let's try it" mindset (e.g., a YouTube video with 54K views).
- The name is the search term: "Free Drama" is a phrase users actually search for, and the store page doesn't mention money, sidestepping Play's scrutiny of earn-money promises.
- Monetization isn't paid: no in-app purchases, all incentivized ads. Cash-out thresholds are high and keep rising, so each user only needs to watch enough ads to break even, and very little cash ever gets paid out.
- Ratings hold around 4.6: a polarized split between 1 and 5 stars, with 5 stars rising very fast, suggesting solicited reviews, which keeps store conversion up (unverified).
6. Differentiation
The product has no real differentiation: the content is a generic library of Chinese overseas short dramas, and the mechanic is the industry-standard "coins + cash-out threshold" template. Only two things are actually different:
- It took the name "FreeDrama";
- The store page and the in-app pitch tell different stories (the store says free dramas, the app says earn money).
Those two points did help it drive volume, but neither is a moat: Kuku used the same name and the same model, and within 7 months reached 42.6M, overtaking it.
7. How many people have seen it
- Revenue isn't public. 0 posts discussing it on X (x-radar).
- In Indonesian local media and on YouTube, it's a "scam warning" topic, not an opportunity topic.
- The model itself has been copied heavily: in the Google Play library alone there are over a dozen "Watch & Earn" short-drama apps. VnExpress 2026-10 has run a whole round of coverage on the category, and legit companies like Kuku have jumped in too.
Bottom line: the product circulates in small circles (with negative word of mouth), and the model is already crowded.
8. What others can borrow
- Using a generic search term as the name earns organic traffic from store search.
- "Incentivized ads + high cash-out threshold" can convert user time into ad revenue, suiting markets with cheap installs and cheap user time (Indonesia, South Asia, Latin America).
- Multiple shells in parallel: one build passes review quietly (FreeDrama), another openly promises money (payoutdrama), spreading the takedown risk.
- But this playbook sits on the edge of Google Play's deceptive-behavior rules and carries the risk of being named by media. The launch-day reset happened twice, suggesting it may already have been dealt with. Copying the cash-out bait isn't advised; what's worth borrowing is the idea of "monetizing free dramas through incentivized ads" itself (Melolo's approach: low threshold, real payouts).
9. Uncertain
- What caused the two launch-day resets, 2026-02 and 2026-08: a takedown followed by a successful appeal with changed info, or a switch of developer accounts?
- Were the ratings reset, and were reviews solicited or artificially boosted?
- Was there any paid acquisition (Meta, Google UAC, and TikTok ads were not found)?
- Where do current Argentine users come from: accidental installs from the Kuku same-name effect, or another channel?
- What is the relationship between Drama Fun: Win Coins and Game Laws?
- Has anyone actually been paid out, and what is the cash-out success rate?
