"Premiere ab mobile pe": Adobe's free editing app hit 7.47M Android installs in six weeks, pushed by ad budget, not media
What it is Adobe's free mobile video editor: multi-track timeline, one-tap voice enhancement, 4K watermark-free export, built-in Firefly AI. Editing is fully free; it only sells AI credits and cloud storage.
Why it took off Adobe ran large-scale Meta buys (heavy on India, with Hinglish creative), paid creators, and Google and YouTube promotion. "Big brand + truly free, no watermark" hits the pain points of CapCut and InShot, and it works especially well in India, where CapCut is banned.
DHow you could follow Don't build another editor to fight it and CapCut head-on. Copy the playbook instead: in categories where watermarks and subscription walls make the money, go truly free, charge only for the premium stuff, target countries the top players can't reach, and run install ads in the local language.

In Sep 22, Adobe brought Premiere's mobile version to Android: editing is free, no watermark, no ads, no login, and 4K export also works. Tech media wrote about it the day it launched, but in the first week it averaged only about 4,000 installs a day. It really took off a week later, when Adobe ran over a thousand install ads across Facebook and Instagram, many written for Indians in Hinglish. By Nov 6 it had 7.47M installs on Google Play, and in the most recent week it was still climbing about 150K a day. A small team can't copy this setup. The lessons worth taking: "truly free" in a category where everyone else earns through watermarks and subscription walls, find countries the rivals can't reach, then advertise with creative in the local language.
Launch day, nothing happened
In Sep 22, Adobe's official blog, WIRED, Ars Technica, TechRadar, Android Authority, CNET and Times of India all published on the same day, and Techmeme picked it up. The headlines said nearly the same thing: Android finally has Premiere, and it's free. Ars Technica's take was that iPhone has iMovie, while Android had never had a free editor from a major company, and Premiere filled that gap. The post on Reddit r/Android got 77 votes and 46 comments.
All that noise, yet installs barely moved. In Sep 23 the cumulative installs on Play were 117K, and in Sep 28 it was 129K, a gain of only about 12K in a week (Google Play installs, third-party estimate).
The change came on September 23 and 24. Adobe's "Adobe Video" page (1.49M likes) started running Meta ads that pointed straight to Play installs, placed on Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Threads. Much of the creative was in Hinglish: "Premiere ab mobile pe" (Premiere is now on your phone), "Videos banao jo click kare" (make videos people click on), "Raw clips se perfect story" (turn raw clips into a perfect story). The same week, a batch of creator videos tagged #AdobePartner, AD and #PR went out together: harry__allsop in the UK (165k followers), uekan2b in Japan (400k followers, 240k views on this one), plus creators in the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Brazil.
From Sep 29 on, daily installs jumped to several hundred thousand. By Oct 3 the cumulative total was 1.22M, Oct 13 3.25M, Oct 31 6.38M. In the first days of November, the same page still had 1,300 to 1,700 ads running (Meta ad library, 11-01 to 11-06).
What it actually is
A mobile editor with a multi-track timeline: transitions, voiceover, sound effects, one-tap audio enhancement, built-in Firefly generative AI and Adobe Stock assets, plus a Shorts template entry built with official YouTube support. It launched on iPhone in 2025 Sep 30, the same day Adobe retired the previous generation, Premiere Rush, and told users to switch to the new app. The Android version was "in development." Android users waited nearly a year.
Money comes from only two things: generative AI credits and cloud storage. The in-app purchases on Play run from $7.99 to $69.99, roughly $8 a month or $70 a year (Ars Technica). TechRadar tested it and found the free credits only cover generating a 4-second, 720p video. It has not charted in any country's top grossing list. Adobe doesn't report this app separately; it only says its "creative freemium" monthly actives, covering Firefly, Express and the mobile and web versions, exceeded 100M and grew more than 70% year over year (Q3 FY26). For Adobe, its job is to pull people into the full subscription bundle, not to make money on its own.
How far it has grown
- Installs: 7.47M (Google Play, 11-06), +7M in the last 1.09 days. Play refreshes install counts only every few days, so single-day numbers jump around. Don't read too much into them.
- Ratings: 22K reviews, average 4.43, steadily adding four or five hundred a day. After the new version in Nov 3, the share of one- and two-star reviews rose, and the average dropped from 4.51.
- Charts (11-06): In the Video Players free chart it ranks #2 in India, Germany and France, #3 in the UK and Brazil, and #9 in the US. In the overall free chart it sits in the top 25 in both India and France. On India's chart only Instagram's Edits is ahead of it; in France, only CapCut.
- iPhone: The India store has added over 999 reviews in a little more than a week, about 3 times the US store (App Store, 11-06). On both platforms, India is the fastest-growing market.
Compare new installs in the same week: CapCut 10.2M, Edits 2.6M, InShot 2.34M, Premiere 1.09M, VN 1.07M, YouTube Create 510K. An app six weeks old has already passed VN in weekly new installs. Adobe's own Firefly, live for over a year, has only 3.62M on Play in total.
Why India specifically
CapCut has been banned in India since 2020. One of the world's largest demands for short-video editing has been split among Edits, VN and InShot in recent years. When Premiere came in, it had three things in hand: the Adobe name, "free with no watermark" that its rivals didn't offer, and Hinglish ads written specifically for Indian users. One Indian user wrote in the comments: "I used CapCut before, the problem is it has a watermark, and without a subscription there are very few transitions and effects." Another wrote a single line: "It is free... in one word I will say it is Kohinoor."
I found no direct evidence for why France also pushed into the overall top 30 (French is the second most common language in the reviews). Whether the roughly 29 million installs from Sep 3 to Oct 100 came from scaled ad spend, Play Store recommendations, or the timing of India's Navratri festival season, I can't say.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Compared with Premiere |
|---|---|---|
| CapCut (ByteDance) | 2.06B installs, +10.2M in a week | Most complete templates and AI effects; free version has watermarks and requires a subscription; banned in India |
| Edits(Instagram) | 132M installs, +2.6M in a week | Equally free and watermark-free, tied to Reels; #1 on India's Video Players chart |
| InShot | 967M installs | Light editing, ads, watermarks and subscriptions |
| VN | 342M installs, +1.07M in a week | Multi-track editing that is also free and watermark-free, with good reviews, but no big brand and no AI generation |
| KineMaster | 549M installs | Professional multi-track; free version has watermarks |
| YouTube Create(Google) | 18.2M installs | Google's own Shorts editor, thin on features |
This category is already crowded: CapCut and Edits are an order of magnitude bigger. Also note VN: "free, no watermark, multi-track" was already done by VN years ago, and it never broke out. Premiere can get over 100K installs a day, and the difference is Adobe's name and ad budget. Google helped too: May's Android 17 creator features blog name-checked it ahead of time, and YouTube gave it a Shorts template entry point.
What users are complaining about
The most common complaint in the reviews is "the Premiere name, but fewer features than CapCut." One French user wrote: "I thought there would be Premiere Pro on mobile, and it turned out to be a stripped-down CapCut." The features people keep saying are missing: keyframes, color grading and exposure curves, picture-in-picture, masks, text animation, speed curves, and multiple audio tracks (adding a second audio track gets stuck at 0%). There are also complaints about lower export quality, white screens, and stuttering playback on mid- and low-end phones. Some people came because Rush was shut down: "I thought Rush was broken, and I had nothing to edit with. Thanks for not cutting features or putting up a paywall."
These complaints suggest that a fair number of the people who installed it because of "Adobe" wanted something more professional. But CapCut, Alight Motion and KineMaster already own that space, and it's only a matter of time before Adobe fills it themselves.
If it were you
D: worth knowing about, not recommended to follow. It runs on the Adobe brand, tens of millions of desktop users, users migrated from Rush, thousands of ads running at once, and Google and YouTube promotion, none of which followers can get. The space belongs to products like CapCut, Edits and VN with hundreds of millions of installs, and coverage is already everywhere.
Who it's for: Teams of 1 to 3 people who already run a utility app in one country or language and buy Meta installs. Use its playbook, don't compete with it.
Who it's not for: Anyone planning a general phone video editor to go head-to-head with CapCut, Edits or Premiere. Also anyone who hasn't worked out their AI generation costs but wants to copy its "fully free" model.
How to do it: Don't build an editor. Copy the positioning. First, in a category where everyone monetizes through watermarks, ads and subscription walls, remove all of those and charge only for one or two expensive things (it charges for AI credits and storage). Word of mouth and press will follow. Second, go after countries the top players can't reach: blocked markets, places without localization or a launch. Third, if you do touch editing, take the narrow slice people complain about most, like keyframe and transition templates for AMV and character edits in India, or a music library with popular Hindi tracks. Build a small tool, not an all-in-one editor.
How to get installs: Write ad creative in the local language the way it does: Hinglish "Premiere ab mobile pe" sells far harder than English copy. On launch day, start paid, creators and posts together. Don't count on press to drive installs. Its experience was that coverage barely moved the numbers, and ads did.
How long the window lasts: A narrow gap like this stays open only until Adobe fills it. It ships updates every month, and keyframes and color grading are the features people ask for most. Our estimate (inference): it closes within a few months.
Signs we're reading it wrong: ① After Adobe pulls its paid push, weekly new installs hold above 500k. That would mean "big brand + truly free" can carry organic growth, and the positioning is worth more than we think. ② A small team's editing or template app in India climbs into the top 10 of Video Players on Hinglish creative. That would mean the market gap is open to small teams too and worth a second look. ③ The reverse: if after the November update the rating keeps falling and weekly installs drop below 300k, the users were mostly bought and won't stay.

Why Adobe Premiere: Video Editor (Android) took off
Package com.adobe.premiere · Developer Adobe · Play launch 2026-09-21 (public release 9-22) · Data as of 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It's not a new model. A major company moved a free editor app that had already worked on iPhone a year earlier over to Android. Its traffic came from four places: Adobe's own large-scale Meta paid acquisition (mostly India, Hinglish creative), paid creators (#AdobePartner), tech press covering it the same day, and Google endorsing it at the Android 17 event and tying it to YouTube Shorts. Its product position is "big brand + completely free + no watermark, no ads, no login required + 4K export," aimed at the pain points of CapCut / InShot / KineMaster, which are free but carry watermarks, ads and subscriptions. In India, where CapCut is blocked, it mainly has to compete with Instagram's Edits for position. A small team can barely copy this.
1. Growth data
Google Play cumulative global installs (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates + our own observations):
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-30 | 22,091 | Test period before public release (Reddit r/premiere recruited Android testers) |
| 2026-09-23 | 116,970 | 9-22 public release; the first week averaged only about 4,000 installs/day |
| 2026-09-28 | 128,611 | |
| 2026-10-03 | 1,216,842 | 9-29 to 10-03: up about 1.09M in five days |
| 2026-10-13 | 3,249,427 | |
| 2026-10-20 | 4,617,857 | |
| 2026-10-31 | 6,377,212 | |
| 2026-11-06 | 7,469,141 | Last 7 days +1,091,929, about 156k installs/day |
- No surge on public release day. Real growth started on days 7–10 after release (from 9-29), and October then held steady at roughly 18–200k installs a day. Play refreshes install counts only every few days, so daily numbers jump around. Don't read too much into any single day.
- Rating 18,156 (10-29) → 22,042 (11-06), steadily adding 430–530 ratings a day; average 4.43. 1-star ratings: 1,690, about 7.7% of the total (app_snap histogram).
- Charts (11-06, chart_rank): Video Players Top Free in India / Germany / France #2, UK / Brazil #3, US #9, Japan #10. Overall Top Free: India #17–25, France #17–27, Brazil #60–77. In India only Edits sits above it; in France, only CapCut.
- Benchmarks from the same period (googleplay library, 7-day new installs): CapCut 10.2M, Edits (Instagram) 2.6M, InShot 2.34M, Adobe Express 1.5M, Premiere 1.09M, VN 1.07M, YouTube Create 510k, KineMaster 300k. An app only 6 weeks old already matches VN and Adobe Express on weekly installs. Adobe's own Firefly has only reached 3.62M after a year-plus, and Photoshop mobile 3.52M. This is the fastest-growing new app Adobe has put on Play in the last two years.
- iOS version (launched 2025-09-30, appstore library 11-06): US ratings 27,378 (7 days +363), India 26,327 ratings (7 days +999), ranked #11 in Photo & Video Top Free in India and #125 overall Top Free. India is the largest growth market on both platforms.
- Revenue: Play in-app purchases of $7.99–$69.99 (per Ars Technica, corresponding to Premiere mobile plans of about $8 a month or $70 a year, mainly selling generative AI credits and cloud storage). It has not charted on any Play grossing list. Adobe's earnings don't break out this app. They only say that in Q3 FY26, "creative freemium MAU (including Firefly, Express, and the web and mobile versions of Premiere / Photoshop / Lightroom) exceeded 100M, up more than 70% year over year" (Adobe Q3 FY26 earnings call script). For Adobe, its role is to feed the freemium funnel, not to earn money on its own.
2. Competitors
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How it differs from Premiere |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut (ByteDance) | Android/iOS/web/desktop | 2020-04 | Play 2.06B installs, 7 days +10.2M | Strongest template and AI effects ecosystem. Users have complained about export watermarks and tighter Pro subscription terms in recent years. Blocked in India since 2020 |
| Edits(Instagram / Meta) | Android/iOS | 2025-04 | 132M installs, +2.6M in 7 days | Also free with no watermark, deeply tied to IG Reels. Google gave Edits exclusive AI features on Android 17. #1 in India's free charts. |
| InShot | Android/iOS | 2014 | 967M installs | Long-running light editor. Free tier has ads and watermarks; revenue from subscriptions plus ads. |
| VN | Android/iOS/desktop | 2018 | 342M installs, +1.07M in 7 days | Also a free, watermark-free multi-track editor with a good reputation. Lacks a big brand and AI generation. |
| KineMaster | Android/iOS | 2013 | 549M installs | Pro-feel multi-track editor. Free tier has a watermark; subscription-based. |
| Filmora / PowerDirector / VivaVideo / Alight Motion | Android/iOS | 2013–2018 | 140M–540M installs | Subscription plus watermark. Alight Motion leans toward motion graphics. |
| YouTube Create(Google) | Android | 2023-09 | 18.2M installs, +510k in 7 days | Google's own free Shorts editor with thin features. Premiere got an official YouTube partnership entry point for Shorts templates. |
| Adobe Express / Premiere Rush (Adobe's own) | Android/iOS | Express 2018;Rush 2019 | Express 164M; Rush 2025-09-30 delisted | Rush's successor is this one; Express leans template-based |
| iMovie(Apple) | iOS (big-company feature) | 2010 | Built into the system | Android never had a matching "big-company free video editor"; Ars Technica flat out said Premiere fills that gap |
Bottom line: this category is crowded, and CapCut and Edits are both an order of magnitude bigger. Premiere isn't the only competitor, but it carves out a slice of a crowded market through brand and "free, no strings attached."
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Meta paid acquisition (confirmed, the main paid channel): The metaads library shows the "Adobe Video" page (1.49M likes) running 1,718 ads right now (11-01), up from 1,545 (11-03) and 1,358 (11-06). CTA is INSTALL_MOBILE_APP, and the landing page goes straight to
play.google.com/...id=com.adobe.premiere. Ads pointing to Play started running from 2026-09-23/24 (9-18 first ran one Hinglish ad pointing to iOS). Placements cover FB / IG / Audience Network / Threads. Much of the creative is Hinglish ("Premiere ab mobile pe", "Videos banao jo click kare", "Raw clips se perfect story"), which says they're focused on India. 10-21 also added a batch of English video creatives for "One-tap audio enhance". The iOS version has been running on Meta continuously since 2026-04, including Hindi creatives. Meta doesn't disclose spend, but with over a thousand ads live at once, the budget is substantial. - Paid creators + official creator program (confirmed): TikHub turned up a batch of creator videos tagged
AD/#AdobePartner/#PR: harry__allsop (165k followers, 9-30 "Android users… it's finally your turn"), maynard.sabellano (27k followers, 9-22 posted the day of launch), Japan's uekan2b (400k followers, 9-24 "Adobe Premiere Android版がやってきた" #PR, 240k views), alexnicoll_, mullahmugzie, designerinyourpocket (217k followers), and others. There's also plenty of organic reshares: Indonesia's itsdavin__ review at 30k views, Bangladesh's iamahhridoy at 18k views, Brazil's invibefilms and xjadixx. Individual views are modest, so this is a volume-style push. - Concentrated press coverage (confirmed): On 9-22, Adobe's official blog, Android Authority, WIRED, Ars Technica, TechRadar, CNET, DPReview, Neowin, Times of India, and Engadget all published at once, picked up by Techmeme; the r/Android thread got 77 upvotes and 46 comments. The core pitch in every piece was the same: "finally here" + "free, 4K, no watermark, no ads."
- 平台站台 / 平台事件(已证实):Google 2026-05-12 在 Android 17 创作者功能博客(Android Show / I/O 2026)里点名「Adobe Premiere app 即将登陆 Android」,并给它 YouTube Shorts 专属模板和特效;Adobe 和 YouTube 在 MAX 2025 宣布合作,App 里有「Create for YouTube Shorts」入口。Google 有动机扶它:Android 一直缺一个能对标 iMovie 和 CapCut 的大厂免费剪辑器。有没有拿到 Play 商店的首页推荐,未核实。
- Legacy user migration (confirmed): Premiere Rush 2025-09-30 was pulled from app stores; the official FAQ tells users to switch to the mobile Premiere app, with "the Android version in development." Android Rush users who waited a year, plus desktop Premiere Pro users (about 30M, per Quantumrun's estimate), are ready-made early adopters.
- Brand search (inferred): "Premiere" is practically synonymous with video editing, so searches for premiere / adobe on Play naturally route here. 11-06 No other app on Play is riding the name.
- Why India and France: India banned CapCut in 2020, leaving short-form editing demand split between Edits, VN, and Premiere. Add Hinglish creative targeting, and India became the largest source of growth on both Play and iOS (on iOS, India added 7 ratings in 999 days, about 3x the US). France's climb into the overall top 17 has no direct evidence (French was the second-largest language in the review sample), unverified.
Timing lines up too: 9-22 after launch got only about 4,000 installs a day in the first week (press and organic traffic). Once 9-23/24 started Meta ads and 9-30 creators posted in bulk, 9-29 climbed to hundreds of thousands of installs a day. So growth came mainly from paid acquisition, not press.
4. Why users stay and pay
- Reviews (googleplay library, sample mostly Indian English and French, 474 reviews with 5-star 347) are mostly positive: "finally a real Premiere on Android," "free and good." Complaints center on export quality drops / larger files, missing color grading and basic features, multi-track audio stuck at 0%, login problems, and a 5GB RAM requirement that keeps many mid- and low-end phones out.
- The only paid items are generative AI credits and storage; all editing features are free. TechRadar's hands-on test found the free credits only cover generating 1 clips of 4 seconds at 720p. So most users never pay, and conversion happens on Adobe's full subscription, not in this app.
5. Differentiation
- "Big-brand pro editor + truly free": free with no ads, no watermark, no login, no upgrade popups, 4K export, multi-track timeline, one-tap voice enhancement (Enhance Audio). Competitors CapCut, InShot, and KineMaster all have watermarks, ads, or paywalls in their free tiers, and every outlet made this the headline.
- Built-in Firefly generative AI and Adobe Stock assets, integrated with the desktop Premiere workflow ("continued editing on desktop" is still on the roadmap).
- Official YouTube Shorts partnership entry point: something CapCut and Edits (Meta) can't offer.
- Foldable and tablet-specific layouts (WIRED, CNET).
This differentiation is a necessary condition for it to take off: it got media to write about it, creators to take the deals, and Google to back it. But turning that into 15–200k installs a day is Adobe's brand and ad budget. Without the Adobe name, a "free, watermark-free multi-track editor" already exists in VN, and it hasn't exploded like this.
6. How many people have seen it
Widely discussed: full coverage from mainstream tech outlets, picked up by Techmeme, named in Google's official blog, and mentioned in Adobe's earnings materials. Revenue isn't broken out, but this isn't an opportunity window a small team can chase. There are no copycats yet (searching premiere on Play turns up no name-riding apps).
7. What others can borrow
- "Free with no strings" is itself the selling point: in a category where everyone monetizes through watermarks, ads, and subscription walls, removing all of that and monetizing through AI credits and storage earns word of mouth and headlines on its own. Small teams need to check whether their AI costs can sustain it.
- Find a market your rival can't enter: CapCut is banned in India, which leaves a gap for editing apps there. Target it precisely with localized (Hinglish) creatives.
- Validate on one platform first, then expand to another with a mature version and platform backing: on launch day, press, creators, and paid ads all fired together, rather than launching quietly and pushing slowly.
- Tie into the platform's distribution entry points (YouTube Shorts template entry, exposure at Android 17 launch events).
8. Still unclear
- The direct trigger for the 9-29 to 10-03 wave of about 1.09M installs: could be Meta ad scale-up, a Play Store feature, India's Navratri festival season, or a Google device partnership. No direct evidence.
- Whether it got Play homepage features, or preinstall / recommendation deals with Samsung / Pixel: unverified.
- Whether Google App Campaigns (UAC) is running: the googleads library doesn't track Adobe (no record doesn't mean no spend). The TikTok EU ad library maps Adobe's account as low, so it's unclear whether Premiere is running ads there.
- Retention and paid conversion: unknown. After version 11-03 26.5.0, the share of 3-star and 2-star ratings rose, and the average fell from 4.51 to 4.43, worth tracking.
- Why France pushed into the overall top 30.
