# Put a wooden bookshelf for the books you've read: how a Barcelona indie dev sold a reading-log subscription through BookTok

**What it is** A reading log app where the books you've read stand on a wooden shelf you can decorate. Scan your copy's spine and it goes on the shelf. You can export the shelf as an image and post it to TikTok or Instagram.

**Why it took off** "Scan a spine, stand it on the shelf" is a scene that makes great short video. The founder opened a few official accounts, one per language, and posted daily using a "first-second contrast hook + demo" template. One video hit 2.19M views. The iOS app had run for 3 months when the Android version shipped, which caught the people who had been asking for it in the comments.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another equally expensive shelf app. Build a version with a real free tier and no AI-looking art, or switch languages or collectibles (vinyl, perfume, board games), and run the same video template yourself every day.

Grade B: the demand and the acquisition playbook are both proven, and there are two open gaps: pricing that's too aggressive, and art people call AI-generated. The shelf idea has no moat, there are plenty of copies, and teardown sites are already pushing people to build alternatives. Whether one takes off depends on whether you can post content every day, not on copying the app. Word in small circles

A Barcelona indie developer built a reading log app where books you've read aren't listed in a table. They stand on a decorative wooden shelf, and you can scan your own copy's spine to put it there. The idea isn't new, and several similar apps tried it without taking off. What worked was the founder's own handful of TikTok accounts, posting the same kind of video every day. The iOS app ran for 3 months before launching on Google Play in Oct 1, and it brought in about 30k installs in its first month. Below: how the videos are made, how it charges, what users complain about, and the gap you could go after.

### A 2.19M-view video

On Sep 15 of 2026, the TikTok account @slowread.shelf posted a video with one line of caption: "I could KISS the booktok girlie who showed me this". The video demos the app, called SlowRead: shelf, spines, decorations. As of Nov 6 it had 2.19M views, the highest of anything that account has posted.

The most-liked comments weren't about books. "Not the grindr app 😭", "Tinder and grindr 😂". It looks like the phone home screen in the video showed the Tinder and Grindr dating app icons (inferred from the comments). The genuine feedback came second: "I subscribed for the year, I love the reading timer", "I've never downloaded an app this fast". Several more asked "no android :(" and "when is it on the Play Store".

The person behind it is Adrià Martinez Moreno, @adriamatz on X, who has been publicly sharing how he builds products. In Oct 17 he posted: "My first video that clearly showed the app itself and passed 20k views changed how I sell it... Open with a controversial hook in the first second, then demo the feature people will screenshot." SlowRead's later videos mostly follow that formula.

### What it is

It's a reading log: reading, want to read, finished. That part is much like Goodreads. What's different is what the logged books look like:

- **Each book stands on a 2.5D wooden shelf** , showing either the spine or the cover. Photograph the copy in your hand and the app puts the real spine or cover on the shelf.

- **The shelf is decoratable** : pick the wall, the wood, the theme, and add plants, candles, string lights, cats between the books. The theme names are "Velaris Library", "Night Court", "War College", all in-jokes from the romantasy novels that are huge on BookTok.

- **Built to share** : export the shelf as an image for Instagram or TikTok, get a desktop widget, and have a public profile at slowreadapp.com/@yourname.

- There are also book clubs, a reading timer (which blocks other apps while it runs), monthly and yearly recap cards, and imports from Goodreads, StoryGraph and others.

The website says it plainly: "An object, not a chart." Another line: "Most people open it when they're not reading." Users open it more to tidy up their collection than to keep accounts.

### Where users come from

**Mostly the founder's own TikTok accounts.** The main English account @slowread.shelf posted 203 videos, the Spanish account @slowread.esp 201, and @slowread.eng 169 more. Each account posts 1 to 3 times a day (TikTok profile, 11-06). Recent titles: "Not for me", "Bye bye Goodreads 😭", "OMG 😭", "I could marry my gf for showing me this", "Scan a book spine with SlowRead". The same few lines rotate, most get one or two thousand views, and occasionally one blows up. The three big ones: Jul 21 "how to scan spines in my app" at 300k, Aug 5 same theme at 760k, and the Sep 15 video at 2.19M.

**Paid creators are likely too.** In Oct the founder posted on X about spending on Sideshift (a platform that pays creators by views): 4 creators, $1,269 spent, one creator alone got over $1,000. He didn't say which app, but SlowRead is the one he now promotes (unverified). One UK App Store review opens with "saw an ad on TikTok". The third-party site Onbo Hub logged about 8 Meta ads for it in Oct 23, a small amount.

**Android, catching the backlog.** The iOS version launched in Jul 2026 4, and many viewers were Android users who kept asking in the comments. It hit Google Play in Oct 1 and got about 21k installs in the first month. From Oct 29 to Nov 6 it added 8,714 more, for 29,805 total (Google Play install count, 11-06). It now charts in 25 countries' Books charts: Netherlands Top Free 71, Australia 79, Spain 80, Italy 93. In the US Books Top Grossing it ranked 83 to 96 (Google Play charts, 10-29 to 11-06).

**Titles change by language.** In Spanish it's "Estantería de Libros", in German "Bücherregal", in French "Bibliothèque & PAL", in Dutch "Boekenkast". It also grabs the search terms "Book Tracker" and "TBR". It ranks best in the Netherlands and Spanish-speaking markets, which fits.

**The rating prompt comes before the paywall.** On Play, 30k installs have 1,778 ratings, about 6%, where a typical app sits at 1% to 2%. One App Store one-star review explains why: "It had me set up a cute library and name it the second I downloaded it... then asked me to rate the app, so I gave it 5 stars because it really is pretty. Only after I rated did it tell me I had to subscribe." So the iOS US average reads 4.6, but the written reviews from October are mostly one-star.

### Where the money comes from, and what users are angry about

The pricing is aggressive. On iOS it's a hard paywall: after you decorate the shelf, a 3-day free trial pops up (pre-selected), and if you close it, a half-price annual offer appears. US App Store reviews cite about $10 a week, $40 a year, or a $150 one-time purchase. Android is looser: the free tier allows 3 books and 1 shelves (per the website's Android page), and in-app purchases on Play run from $5.99 to $109.99.

This model makes the payoff and the cost both visible:

- **People pay.** In the US Play Books Top Grossing chart it reached the top 100, and about 15 other countries ranked in the 125 to 148 range. The founder also posted that using Apple's win-back feature, "28 days, 592 subscriptions won back, 12.3% win-back rate", without naming the app. If that was SlowRead, then over those 28 days roughly 4,800 cancellations were recovered, so the subscription base is not small (inference).

- **More people complain.** Since mid-October, roughly seven in ten written App Store reviews are one-star, and the complaints repeat: "Goodreads is free", "$10 a week, more than streaming", "spent ages building a shelf, then told I have to pay", "the backgrounds and decor are obviously AI", "still got charged after cancelling the trial". The Play average fell from 29 in Oct to 4.70 in Nov; the one-star count rose from 6 to 4.63,1, five-star from 49 to 65.

- **Fans are loyal.** The most common five-star comment is about how fast it updates: "At least one update a week, sometimes more, and they actually change things based on what we suggest" and "I said I wanted more dark romance themes and decorations, and they added them."

Third-party revenue estimates vary widely: AppGoblin puts it under $10k a month, Onbo Hub puts the ceiling around $23k. The founder hasn't disclosed the figure.

### Others have tried this idea

| Product | Launched | Scale | How SlowRead differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodreads | 2011 | Play 32.6M installs | Leader in book review communities, list-based interface; SlowRead uses "Bye bye Goodreads" as its hook and imports in one tap |
| StoryGraph | 2021 | Play 1.89M | Focused on stats charts and recommendations |
| Bookshelf(SquidBit) | 2019 | Play 1.92M | Virtual shelf plus book collection management; more of a utility, not pretty |
| Book Towers | 2020 | 560k on Play | Stacks books into towers; similar idea, but no decorating and no spine scanning |
| Cat's Library | 2025-10 | 64k on Play | Cat-themed study room, same cozy angle, small scale |
| Yuuna | 2026-03 | Play 21k, 7-day +2,900 | Also shelf-style, growing at a third of its pace |
| Margins | 2026-09 | Play 30k, 7-day +6,300 | A new entrant of the same period, not built around shelves; negative reviews directly recommend users switch to it |
| ShelfLife (US husband-and-wife team) | 2026 H1 | About 51 iOS ratings | Almost identical: scan spines, decorate shelves, monthly decor packs; iOS launched earlier than SlowRead |

ShelfLife is the one to watch: same features, launched early, and it's two orders of magnitude behind on traction. The only difference is that SlowRead posts on TikTok every day, while ShelfLife doesn't. So SlowRead's edge is that the "photograph the spine, place it on the shelf" 3-second shot is perfect for video, but that alone isn't enough; someone has to post it every day.

Right now the people who know about it are a small circle: indie developers and app teardown sites (Onbo Hub has dissected its onboarding and paywall, and IdeaWave's page literally says "build a better alternative"). Mainstream media hasn't covered it. Copycats have already appeared: in August a Romanian company registered "SlowRead - Bookshelf & TBR" on Play before SlowRead launched on Android. It was taken down after 9 days, with about 1,200 installs.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Worth trying, but don't copy a shelf app that's just as expensive. It proves two things: people on BookTok will pay for a good-looking shelf, and one person posting templated videos every day can build real volume. It also leaves two gaps: pricing that's too aggressive, and art people call AI-generated. The idea has no moat by itself. ShelfLife shows that winning or losing comes down to who posts content every day.

**Who it suits:** a team of 1 to 2 people, with someone who can draw, or who can make hand-drawn or real-photo assets look polished; someone willing to post 2 to 3 short videos a day for three months straight; ideally someone who speaks a language SlowRead hasn't seriously targeted, like Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Chinese.

**Who it doesn't suit:** people unwilling to show their face or post videos daily, or who expect the store to bring them organic installs (the store is full of shelf apps nobody uses); anyone wanting to compete head-on on English or Spanish BookTok (SlowRead already holds that spot and updates almost weekly); anyone who can't make good art and would rely on AI-generated images (exactly where it's getting criticized).

**How to build it:** Three paths, pick one. First, build an honest SlowRead: a free tier that already holds dozens of books and is shareable, and charge only for themes and decor packs, or a one-time purchase of $10 to $20. Reviews already contain the demand in people's words: "If there were a free version, even with basic features, I'd consider paying." Second, switch language and market: reading communities in Japan, Korea, Brazil, and Chinese-speaking markets, with spine photos, local libraries, and themes built around local book titles. Third, switch to collectibles: vinyl, perfume, lipstick, board games, figures. It's the same idea, "show my collection on a shelf worth posting," and it makes the same 3-second "scan and it's on the shelf" clip (inference; first search TikTok to see whether this collector crowd actually posts their collections).

**How to get users:** follow the founder's own playbook: open with a controversial or contrasting hook in the first second, then demo the action people will screenshot (scanning a spine, the book landing on the shelf). Run one official account per language, post the same template daily, and when one video takes off, boost it and pay creators by views. The rating prompt sits at the moment users are happiest with their shelf, and that part works. But if you charge, say so up front. Don't let people give five stars before they find out it costs money, because that's how you get the long one-star reviews.

**When to launch by:** 2027 January 0 at the latest. Year-end and early January are when book people post their "best of the year" lists and "new year reading challenge" posts, and year-in-review cards are the best content for that moment. Also, sites like IdeaWave are already pushing clones, so the copycats will only multiply.

**Where the thesis went wrong:** ① SlowRead's Play weekly growth fell below 2,000 a week by late November, and it dropped out of the top 150 Top Grossing, which suggests it mostly rode a backlog from the Android launch. BookTok didn't bring in sustained volume. ② It added a decent free tier and cut prices itself, so the "cheaper alternative" gap closed, leaving only language expansion and collectibles. ③ You posted for a month with 30+ videos and none passed 50k views. That means the template isn't working in your language or community. Switch communities instead of forcing it.

## SlowRead: Book Tracker & TBR (com.adriamatz.slowread): why it worked

> Channel: Google Play (same app on iOS, id 6763293288) | Developer: Adrià Martinez Moreno (independent developer in Barcelona, X @adriamatz) | Research date 2026-11-06

### One line

A reading tracker where the books you've read don't go into a table. They stand on a decorative 2.5D wooden bookshelf, and you can photograph your own book spines and place them there. On iOS (launched 2026-07-04), it grew through founder-run, multilingual TikTok accounts (BookTok demo videos, top single video 2.19M views) plus paid UGC creators. The Android launch in 2026-10-01 caught the Android users stuck in that TikTok backlog, bringing in about 30k installs in one month. Monetization is a 3-day free trial with annual / weekly subscriptions or a one-time purchase, plus a win-back offer.

### 1. Data (how big it is now)

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Play cumulative installs | 21,091 (10-29) → 29,805 (11-06), 7 daily +8,714 | googleplay library app_day |
| Play ratings count | 1,420 → 1,778 (31–65 daily installs), average rating 4.70 → 4.63 | googleplay library app_snap |
| Play rating distribution | 1-star 49→65, 4-star 134→230,5-star roughly 1,400; 1,778 ratings against 30k installs, about 6%, which is high | app_snap.histogram |
| Play charts | Books Top Free: nl 42–76, es/it/gb/mx/ar about 70–125. Books Top Grossing: us 83–96, plus about 15 other stores at 125–148 | googleplay chart_rank 10-29~11-06 |
| Play in-app purchases | $5.99 – $109.99 | app_snap.iap_range |
| iOS | Listed 2026-07-04. US store: 804 ratings (only 17 added since 10-28). Best US Books rank #34 (Top Free). UK #14, Australia #10. Spanish-speaking stores use the localized title "Estantería de Libros." | appstore database, app_profile / app_day tables |
| Third-party estimate | AppGoblin: iOS 37K installs, Android 12K, monthly revenue under $10K. Onbo Hub: monthly revenue ceiling $23K, with about 8 Meta ads recorded at 10-23. AppInsider: global daily downloads 1k+ | appgoblin.info, onbo-hub.com/apps/slowread, appinsider.io |
| Self-reported on the website | "10,000+ libraries built" "4.9 star reviews" | slowreadapp.com |

Note: the Play listing date 2026-10-01 is the real launch date, not a reset one. The Android version has its own page at slowreadapp.com/android, and the iOS version came out 3 months earlier.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How SlowRead differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goodreads | iOS/Android/web | 2011 | Play 32.6M installs, 7 daily +53k | The leader in community and book reviews, with a dated, list-based interface. SlowRead hooks with "Bye bye Goodreads," supports Goodreads CSV import, and targets users leaving it. |
| StoryGraph | iOS/Android/web | 2021 | Play 1.89M | Focused on stats charts and recommendations, essentially still charts. SlowRead's site tagline "An object, not a chart" is aimed directly at it. |
| Shelf — what's on yours?(koodos) | iOS/Android | Older product (its Play listing date was reset to 2026-06) | Play 3.38M, 7 daily +81k | A social sharing card for books, film, and music collections, not reading-only, and much larger in scale. |
| Bookmory | iOS/Android | 2020 | Play 2.77M | Korean-style reading journal with a timer. Full-featured, but no "the shelf is the object" visuals. |
| Bookshelf(SquidBit) | iOS/Android | 2019 | Play 1.92M | Virtual bookshelf and library management. Tool-focused, with weak decoration. |
| Book Towers(BustleStudio) | iOS/Android | 2020 | 560k on Play | Visualizes your books as stacked towers. Similar idea, but you can't decorate the room or photograph spines. |
| Cat's Library(Lo-Fi Labs) | iOS/Android | 2025-10 | 64k on Play | Cute cat-library theme on the same cozy-growth track, and smaller than SlowRead. |
| Yuuna: Bookshelf Book Tracker | Android/iOS | 2026-03 | Play 21k, 7 daily +2.9K | Same bookshelf-style tracking, growing at about a third of SlowRead's rate |
| Margins: Book Tracker | Android/iOS | 2026-09 | Play 30k, 7 daily +6.3K | A new entrant of similar scale from the same period, not focused on shelf decoration. |
| ShelfLife (Fisherbird LLC, a husband-and-wife team) | iOS/Android/web | 2026 H1 (iOS id older than SlowRead's) | Only about 51 ratings on iOS | Nearly the same concept: spine scanning, shelf decoration, monthly decoration packs. But no distribution strategy, so it trails by two orders of magnitude. |
| Fable / LibraryThing / Libib | Multiple platforms | Early on | — | Book clubs and catalogs. SlowRead targets their users through its import feature. |

Conclusion: the "bookshelf-style reading tracker" idea itself isn't scarce. Book Towers, Bookshelf, ShelfLife, and Cat's Library have all tried it. SlowRead's edge comes down to three things: photographing real book spines, decoration with real visual craft, and distribution that turns both into TikTok content.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Matrix of official, self-run TikTok accounts in multiple languages (confirmed)**
    - @slowread.shelf: 2,340 followers, 150k likes, 203 videos. Pinned video "I could KISS the booktok girlie who showed me this" (2026-09-15) has 2.19M views; "How to scan a book spine with my app" (08-05) has 760k; the 07-21 one has 300k.
    - @slowread.eng: 474 followers, 169 videos. @slowread.esp (Spanish): 2,948 followers, 147k likes, 201 videos.
    - All three accounts post 1–3 videos a day, reusing one template in different languages: "Not for me," "Bye bye Goodreads," "I could marry my gf for showing me this," plus spine-scanning demos.
    - On Instagram there are also @slowreadapp and @slowread.shelfie (bio: "someone made goodreads for gen z?").
    - Source: TikHub handler_user_profile / fetch_user_post_videos, pulled 2026-11-06.

2. **Founder's methodology (confirmed, X)** . @adriamatz 2026-10-17 posted: "My first video with 20K+ views where you could actually see the app changed how I sell it… A controversial hook in the first second + A demo of the one feature people would screenshot" (4,004 views). That is exactly the "contrarian hook + spine-scanning demo" formula above.

3. **Paid UGC creators (likely, partly confirmed)** . A search snippet from a founder post reads: "Today I sent one creator over $1,000 … My @sideshift_app numbers for October: 4 creators, $1,269 paid out, $1.72 …" Sideshift is a UGC platform that pays creators by views. The post doesn't say which app was promoted, but SlowRead is the one he's pushing now (unverified).

4. **Meta ads (third-party observation, not verified in our database)** . Onbo Hub recorded about 8 Meta ads at 2026-10-23; our metaads and tiktokads databases don't track this advertiser (our databases only track a watchlist, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising). The scale looks small; this is a supporting channel.

5. **Android launch catches pent-up demand (timing, confirmed by data)** . The iOS app had been out for 3 months, and many TikTok viewers were Android users. The main account bio used to say only "Search on App Store"; it now says "App Store & Google Play". After 10-01 went live on Play, it reached 21k installs by 10-29 (IndieTower recorded 221 ratings by 10-10), and charted in Books in 25 countries at once.

6. **Store search / ASO (confirmed)** . Titles are localized per language: Spanish "Estantería de Libros", German "Bücherregal", French "Bibliothèque & PAL", Dutch "Boekenkast", and they target the search terms "Book Tracker" and "TBR". Rankings are strongest in the Netherlands and Spanish-speaking markets, which matches this.

7. **In-app rating prompt (inferred)** . The Play rating-to-install ratio is about 6%, far above the typical 1–2% for apps. Onbo Hub says its onboarding has 20 screens, and users set up a shelf and add their first book before reaching the paywall. Asking for a rating at that moment of delight is likely (unverified).

8. **Website SEO and import** . The slowreadapp.com landing page carries utm tags (ct=web-organic). It supports importing from Goodreads, StoryGraph, Bookmory, Libib and Fable, which lowers the cost of switching apps.

### 4. Why people stay and pay

- The shelf itself is the reward and social currency: you can export it as an IG or TikTok image, and there are home-screen widgets. The website says "Most people open it when they are not reading", so users are tending a collection, not just logging books.

- The art themes target BookTok's biggest niche (romantasy) directly: theme names like "Velaris Library / Night Court / War College / Fae Dungeon" are all in-jokes from Sarah J. Maas and Fourth Wing. Themes and decor are "added with every update", which is the reason to keep paying.

- Monetization: the free tier allows only 3 books and 1 shelf (slowreadapp.com/android), so users hit the cap quickly. The paywall offers three tiers: annual subscription with a 3-day trial (checked by default), weekly subscription, and one-time purchase; closing the paywall triggers a one-time 5% off annual offer (Onbo Hub). The top Play in-app purchase is $109.99, probably the one-time tier. It charts #83–96 in Books Top Grossing in the US Play store and #125–148 in about 15 countries, so people are clearly paying.

- The founder uses Apple's Retention Messaging and posted about it himself: "28 days, 592 subscriptions saved, 12.3% save rate" (a post near his pinned tweet, not naming which app). Working backward from that ratio, 28 days means roughly 4,800 cancellations, so the subscription base is not small (unverified).

- Risk: Play's average rating has been falling from 4.70 stars toward 4.63,1 and 4 stars (app_snap histogram), possibly tied to complaints about the paywall and the 3-book cap. We have no review sample in our database.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?

- **Differentiation** : snap a photo of your real book spines and auto-cut them out, plus a decorable 2.5D bookshelf, and 3D page-flipping, book clubs, quote journals, and reading bingo challenges. The core is "good enough to share."

- **It's a cause, but only with distribution** : ShelfLife, a clone of the same idea (spine photos, decorated shelves, nearly identical features), has only about 51 ratings on iOS. So the differentiator works mainly by **making the TikTok demo video itself the ad** : the "photograph spine → place on shelf" clip, 3 seconds long, is the "feature people would screenshot" the founder described. The product supplies a shootable moment, the founder mass-produces videos with a matrix of accounts, and only the combination produces today's volume.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- The founder builds in public on X (27.2K posts) and talks about growth tactics, but we found no public post where he shared SlowRead's specific MRR, and TrustMRR doesn't list it (not found).

- Third-party teardown sites are already watching: Onbo Hub dissected its onboarding and paywall, and AppGoblin, AppInsider and AppTracker all have pages for it. IdeaWave openly lists it with "Build a sharper alternative to this app".

- The x-radar corpus has no hits for "slowread / adriamatz"; no major account has written about it.

- Judgment: **it's circulating in small circles** (indie developers and the app teardown crowd), with no public revenue yet.

### 7. Copycats

- **InnoWave SRL (Romania), "SlowRead - Bookshelf & TBR" (app.innovawe.slowread)** : 2026-08 claimed the same name on Android, siphoning traffic before the official app reached Android. It was pulled 9 days later after about 1.2K installs (AppBrain, APKPure). This is clear name-jacking copying.

- ShelfLife counts as a parallel competitor, not a copycat (its iOS ID is older).

- Sites like IdeaWave are pushing "build a one-click alternative", so more clones are likely to follow.

### 8. What others can learn

1. Pick a core interaction that is "pretty enough to screenshot" (here, photographing spines to shelve them) so the product demo is itself the content.

2. Open official TikTok accounts for each language and post daily using the same contrast hook templates ("Not for me", "Bye bye Goodreads", "my gf showed me this"); you can build reach without creators, then pay UGC creators per view once it's moving (Sideshift).

3. Use niche-community in-jokes for the art themes (romantasy book titles), and keep adding themes and decor to sustain subscriptions.

4. Validate on iOS first, then launch on Android to catch the backlog of demand the content created; also guard against same-name clones by claiming the Android package and name early.

5. Use the standard paywall playbook: let users experience the core value in onboarding → checkbox trial checked by default → a 5% off offer when the paywall closes → Retention Messaging to win back cancellations.

6. Build competitor import paths (Goodreads CSV and similar) to target users leaving the big platforms.

### 9. Uncertain

- Actual revenue: third-party estimates range from under $10K to $11K–62K/month, a wide spread; the founder hasn't published figures.

- How much comes from paid creators versus Meta ads: the Sideshift post doesn't name the app; Onbo Hub is the only source for Meta ads.

- Whether the high rating rate comes from the onboarding rating prompt: inferred, not verified.

- US iOS ratings are only adding 1–5 per day recently, so the iOS curve may have passed its peak; whether Android growth holds depends on whether its 7-day daily adds start falling.
