1.82M installs, 696 ratings: behind an AI photo app is a paid-acquisition studio running a dozen-plus accounts at once

What it is A free Android app that bundles AI photo effects (baby face, AI hugs, aging, gender swap) and makes its money from full-screen ads.

Why it took off A Facebook page with a fake name and only 408 likes is running 452 video ads. It uses AI photo trends already popular on Reels as creative, buys installs in high-CPM countries, then recovers the spend through splash, interstitial and uninstall-retention ads. The same template is spread across a dozen-plus accounts, and when one goes down, another replaces it.

CHow you could follow it If you already have multiple developer accounts and can run Meta install ads, copy the path: template app plus ad monetization, with creatives rotated across countries and languages. If you want to build a product instead, make a no-ads, pay-per-use "baby face / birthday photo" tool, but you'll be competing head-on with free image generation from Gemini and ChatGPT.

C grade: the useful lesson is the math of "copy a viral trend as creative, buy installs, monetize with ad impressions." But it runs on an account matrix, creative volume and paid-acquisition skill, not on a product. Several similar players are already running, and a paid version has to compete with big companies' free image generation, so following it isn't worth it. Not many people know about it yet

A birthday-photo ad on Facebook Reels

In Oct 22, a user left a one-star review on its Play page:

"I saw its ad on FB Reels, it looked fun: upload a photo of yourself and the AI puts you into a birthday picture. Then I couldn't even upload my photo..."

Another one-star review was blunter: "The ad said it can make videos too" and "not what the ad showed." These lines pin down where the app comes from: users didn't find it by searching the store, they tapped in from a video ad on Reels saying "put yourself in a birthday picture" or "see what your baby will look like."

The feature list on the store page also matches the most popular AI trends on Reels: AI art styles, "imagine your future baby," aging (called Journey of Time), AI hugs and couple photos, gender swap, plus quality enhancement, object removal and background change. No in-app purchases, and it's labeled as containing ads (Google Play store page, 11-06).

How it grew

The first four weeks after launch were nearly silent, with only about 4k cumulative installs by Oct 10 (third-party estimate). After that it climbed in steps:

Source: Google Play installs (early October figures are third-party estimates; daily observation from 10-29).

The chart only sits in the small Photography category: 11-06 is #1 in Italy, #2 in the UK, France, Sweden and the Philippines, and #9 in the US, charted in over twenty stores. It has never made the Top Grossing chart.

Where users come from: a "beauty salon" page with 408 likes running 452 ads

In the Meta Ad Library, the ads for it are run by a Facebook Page called "Caryl Simoneqbz" with the category set to Beauty Salon. 11-05 It has just 408 likes, yet 452 ads are running (11-02 of them are 461). Every one of the dozens visible is a video, all titled "Free Download" with a "Install" button, all pointing to this app. Placements cover Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Threads, and the countries include the US, UK, Germany and Japan.

The timing lines up: the earliest ad started running in Sep 28, and the first surge came in Oct 7. From October 25 to 27 a large batch of new creatives went live, a dozen-plus a day, many with two to nine variants, and the install curve rose steeply.

Beyond that, no other source turns up: searching the app's name on TikTok returns 0 videos, X has 30 posts in the last 0 days, and there are no press articles or Reddit threads. Only APK download sites and app-stats sites with auto-generated pages show up. Its users are almost all bought.

Where the money comes from: make everyone who installs see more ads before they uninstall

There are no subscriptions and no in-app purchases; the money comes entirely from ad impressions. One-star reviews describe the ad density in concrete terms (Google Play reviews, October):

"I'd give zero stars if I could. You can't even try it, ad after ad, and even after a restart it's still ads. It won't even launch." (283 people marked it helpful)
"So painful, ad after ad. I wanted to uninstall, and it made me watch 3 more ads and kept asking if I was sure."
"Used it for 2 minutes, watched more than 10 ads, plus Chrome pop-ups."

1.82M installs but only 696 ratings (about 0.04%), averaging 3.15 stars. 290 one-star and 342 five-star ratings, with almost nothing in between. Many five-star reviews say things like "cool" or "love what it does," or use an unreadable word; the pattern looks suspicious, and whether they were faked can't be verified.

The math of this business: buy one install in high-CPM countries like the US, UK and Germany, show the user several splash, interstitial and uninstall-retention ads before they churn, and it works as long as ad revenue exceeds acquisition cost. Its real acquisition cost and ad revenue aren't visible from outside. But an account that keeps scaling to 450+ ads running is very likely covering its costs (inference).

It's not an app, it's one account in a matrix

The developer site aiartmagic588y9.netlify.app has only a privacy policy, copied from a game template, and it says "the Game" throughout. Searching Google Play for the naming pattern "theme + three digits + y + number.netlify.app" turns up a whole row of apps built on the same template:

The developer names mix US shell LLCs, Vietnamese companies and English personal names, and the contact emails are throwaway Gmail accounts. Some package names don't match the features (one AI photo app uses the package name com.ai.chat.companion.social.community), which looks like old or purchased accounts re-skinned and republished. The Meta side connects too: another page with the same "English first name + surname + three random letters" pattern, Scarborough Norenefjh, runs ads for both SSon Studio and AMST FINANCIAL apps. The account under Leilani Rogers holds 7 apps in total: AI photo, AI face swap, AI home design, expense tracking, loan calculator, tarot and origami. From the company names and the playbook, the operator looks like a Vietnamese studio (inference, unverified).

So this app is just the account the matrix is betting on right now. The earlier accounts have already passed 3M+, and a new batch started ramping up in mid-October. If one account gets banned or sinks under bad reviews, the next one gets spent in its place.

"AI photo template + Meta paid acquisition + ad monetization" already has several players running it at once, and this app is a latecomer to that.

If it were you

In short: you can learn a clear arbitrage playbook from it, but the app itself isn't worth copying. Its edge belongs to the studio behind it, not the product.

Who it's for: teams already monetizing Android with ads, holding multiple developer accounts, able to mass-produce short-video creatives, and running Meta install ads with ad-mediation tuning. For you, it's a ready-made intel report: which plays get high creative CTR (baby faces, hugs, aging, birthday photos), and which high-value countries you can buy installs in.

Who it's not for: solo indie devs with a single developer account (one ban on a bad review or policy strike and it's gone); anyone who won't do paid acquisition and wants to rely on organic store traffic (none of these apps grew organically); anyone aiming for word-of-mouth (on this path, word-of-mouth is the 3-star reviews).

How to do it: two routes. One: follow its playbook. Minimal template app + hit play as video creative + ad monetization. Work out the paid-acquisition cost per install versus ad revenue, and only scale when revenue beats cost. Change countries and languages for the creatives, not the product. Two: fix what it got wrong. The one-star reviews prove the demand is real for "put me in a birthday photo" and "see what my baby looks like," it's just been trashed by ad farms. A version with no ads, a few dollars per result, and shareable outputs has room, but you're up against free image generation in Gemini and ChatGPT. The only thing you could win on is "one step to a result, no prompt writing" (inference).

How to get users: both routes depend on short-form Meta/Reels ads only. Base the creatives on the AI photo plays already trending on Reels. Test 20-30 creatives on a small budget in one or two high-value countries first, and scale only the ones that pay back.

When to move: interest in these plays tracks the new tricks in image-gen models, and each trick lasts a few months. If you want to use this batch (baby faces, hugs, aging), finish testing before year-end.

What would mean you read it wrong: (1) this account and its sister accounts see their active Meta ad count halve within a month or two, or new accounts stop appearing. That means the math has stopped working. (2) Google Play bulk-removes the same-template apps. That means the window has closed. (3) Gemini or Meta AI ships one-tap "baby face" or "birthday photo" templates in its own app. Then the paid version of this play is dead too.

Where users come from
  • Verified Meta ads (FB/IG/Reels/Audience Network/Threads): in the metaads library, a fake-name Page "Caryl Simoneqbz" (408 likes, category Beauty Salon) is running 452 ads. All 50 we saw land on this app, 100% video, CTA Install, countries include US/GB/DE/JP. Ads started 9-28, with large batches of new creatives 10-25~27. Comment: "I saw it advertised on FB Reels."
  • Verified Account-matrix flooding: under the same netlify naming pattern, 12+ similar apps from different developer names. Meta Page "Scarborough Norenefjh" runs ads for both SSon Studio's app and AMST FINANCIAL's app.
  • Inferred Category chart / store search: paid acquisition pushed it to the top of the 25 Photography free chart (#1 in Italy). Chart positions may bring some organic installs on top, but we can't separate them out.
  • Inferred TikTok / X / press / creators: TikHub and x-radar searches returned 0 results.

Why AI Photo Editor: Art Studio (com.ai.art.magic.image.generator) is running

Store: Google Play | Developer: Leilani Rogers (personal-name account) | Launched: 2026-09-09 | Research date: 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It didn't get here on product quality. It's an arbitrage studio built on an account matrix + Meta paid acquisition + interstitial-ad monetization. Roughly 450 video ads run through a fake-name Facebook Page, funneling traffic from the viral "upload a selfie → baby face / AI hug / aging" plays on Facebook/Instagram Reels into a template app full of ads. Ad impressions pay back the install spend. Its chart ranking is a side effect of how much it spends. The same template and the same netlify domain naming pattern run at the same time under more than a dozen "different developers."

It charted in 25 stores in total. It has never made a grossing list's top 100 (best_grossing_rank is empty). (googleplay.chart_rank)
  • Ratings are sparse and polarized: 1.82M installs but only 696 ratings (0.04%), averaging 3.15 stars. The histogram: 1 stars 290 / 5 stars 342, with roughly 20 each for stars 2–4. The 1-star reviews are almost all "too many ads, won't open, feels like a scam"; the 5-star ones are mostly "cool / great app / nice app" or a single garbled word. (googleplay.app_snap, review, 2026-11-06)
  • Monetization: offers_iap = False, ad_supported = True. No in-app purchases, ads only. (googleplay.app_snap)

2. Where users come from: Meta paid acquisition (confirmed)

In the metaads library (2026-11-02 / 11-05 tracking), the Page "Caryl Simoneqbz" (page_id 1282036491667184):

  • Currently running 452 ads (11-02 of them 461). The Page has only 354→408 likes, and its category is listed as "Beauty Salon." The library docs note that "tiny like count but dozens to hundreds of live ads = pure paid acquisition with a fake-name Page pointing at a Play link."
  • All 50 ads we saw land on com.ai.art.magic.image.generator. 100% are video. CTA is always INSTALL_MOBILE_APP, headline is always "Free Download," placements are Facebook + Instagram + Audience Network + Threads, and countries include US/GB/DE/JP. The earliest ad started 2026-09-28. Activity clusters 10-25–10-27, when new creatives were pushed in bulk (a dozen-plus a day, many with 2–9 variants).
  • The timing lines up: ads start 9-28 → first scale-up 10-07 → creative expansion around 10-25 → install curve jumps.
  • User-side confirmation: 10-22 one 1-star review says "I saw it advertised on FB Reels... add your picture and AI would make it into a birthday picture with you in it"; another says "the way it was advertised is that it also had video" and "Not what is advertised". The ads promise the AI photo/video effects popular on Reels, but once inside the app users get a screen full of ads.

No organic channel found: TikTok (TikHub searching the app name, 0 results), X (x-radar, 0 results in the last 30 days), press, and Reddit all came up empty. The only web mentions are APK mirror sites and auto-generated pages from AppBrain and Similarweb, plus one Instagram auto-aggregator page that ranks it #1 in "Top New Free Photography" in India.

3. Behind it is an account matrix (this is the key finding)

The developer site aiartmagic588y9.netlify.app is just a privacy policy, and it was copied from a game template (it says "the Game" and "register for the Game" throughout). Searching the googleplay library for the naming pattern <topic><three digits>y<number>.netlify.app turns up the same template under many "different developers":

(Google Play library app / app_profile, 2026-11-06)

Evidence of a single operator:

  • Package names don't match the app names: "AI Photo Effects" uses com.ai.chat.talk.ask.smart.response.pro, and "AI Photo Editor: Art Generator" uses com.ai.chat.companion.social.community. This looks like old packages or bought accounts re-skinned and republished. Developer names mix US LLCs (AMST FINANCIAL, INFINITE HILLS, PAO LABS, FL OPERATIONS, even RESCUE RESOURCE RANCH), Vietnamese companies (VIETBASE, DTL Group), and personal names (Leilani Rogers, Gladys Bishop). The contact emails are all throwaway gmails. A typical rented or bought account matrix.
  • Tying it together on the Meta side: the fake-name Page "Scarborough Norenefjh" runs ads for both SSon Studio's AI Art Magic and AMST FINANCIAL's Room Design AI. "Delsie Broderickljq" and "Hernandez Rudd Sibby" also advertise the same home-decor apps. The names are all "English first name + surname + three random letters," the same pattern as Caryl Simoneqbz. (metaads.app_link / advertiser)
  • The Leilani Rogers account has 7 apps on Play in total: AI photo, AI face swap, AI home design, expense tracking, loan calculators, tarot, origami. A standard "template app farm" lineup.

So this app is one "account" in the matrix that's currently getting the spend. The earlier accounts (SSon Studio, FunPrank) have already hit 3M+, and the new ones (588y16/17/20/21, launched mid-October) are being scaled up.

(Install counts all come from googleplay.app_profile, 2026-11-06)

5. Why it took off

  1. Willing to keep spending on paid acquisition: a fake Page with 400 likes runs 450+ video ads, covering FB/IG/Audience Network/Threads, targeting high-CPM countries like the US, GB, DE, and JP. Launch timing lines up with when spend ramps.
  2. Borrows viral gimmicks as creative: baby face, AI hug, aging, gender swap, birthday photo. All are "one-tap selfie transforms" already proven on Reels/TikTok, so click-through rates are naturally high. The app only needs an entry point that matches the creative.
  3. Pure ad monetization, fast payback: no subscriptions, no paid tier. Ads are stacked on app open, interstitials, and uninstall-retention screens (reviews: "7 ads before I got a chance", "tried to uninstall and it forced me to watch 3 ads"). Each install squeezes out several high-CPM impressions before churning. Users uninstalling after a few minutes doesn't matter.
  4. A portfolio spreads the risk: the same template is spread across a dozen-plus accounts. If one gets banned or buried by bad reviews, move on to the next and keep spending. Chart positions (like #1 in Italy Photography) are a natural result of acquisition volume in a small category chart, not a sign of word of mouth.
  5. Ratings get diluted, not accumulated: a 0.04% rating rate means the store-page score barely matters for it. The near-even split between 5-star and 1-star reviews looks like someone is adding favorable ratings to offset negative ones (unverified).

6. Differentiation

At the product level there is no differentiation: features are basically the same as its sibling apps in the portfolio, Muselab, and every other "baby face" app, and it's arguably worse (negative reviews focus on too many ads and the app not opening). Its only "edge" is distribution and monetization: more aggressive Meta video acquisition, higher ad density, and mass account spreading. That's why it works, but the advantage belongs to the studio behind it, not to this app.

7. Visibility

Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no public revenue, no press or X coverage, no organic TikTok content, only auto-generated pages on APK sites and app analytics sites. But the "AI photo template + Meta acquisition + ad monetization" lane itself is already crowded (Muselab, Willson Studio, FunPrank, and SSon in the table above are all running at the same time).

8. What others can learn

  • Use the Meta Ad Library to find fake-name Pages with a few hundred likes running a few hundred ads. Follow the landing package names to map out a whole acquisition studio's product line and creative. Also, based on the naming pattern of developer websites (here xxx588y<N>.netlify.app), you can pull the entire portfolio out of the store.
  • Using viral gimmicks (baby face, hug, aging) as ad creative, with the app as a minimal entry point, is the classic model for Android ad-monetization arbitrage. To copy it you need: creative production capacity, multiple developer accounts, Meta buying capability, and ad-mediation tuning (eCPM > CPI).
  • If you want to build a real product, the 1-star reviews on apps like this show the demand is real (users genuinely want "put me in my birthday photo" and "see what my baby looks like"). It's just been ruined by ad farms. A version with no ads and pay-per-use has room, but you'd be competing with Gemini and ChatGPT's free image generation.

9. Uncertain

  • Revenue and ROI: we can't know the CPI or ad eCPM. Whether acquisition is profitable can only be inferred, with decent confidence, from "continued increases in 450 ads running" (unverified).
  • 10-21 single-day +460k is a merged value from AppstoreSpy observations, so the real distribution may be a sum over several days.
  • Whether installs stopping between 10-28 and 11-02 reflects paused spend, creative swaps, or Play count delay is unclear.
  • Whether it also runs Google App Campaigns or TikTok ads (the TikTok ad library only covers Europe, and we only track a set list): no evidence found, which doesn't mean it isn't running them.
  • Whether the 5-star reviews are fake: their form is suspicious (one-word praise, garbled text), unverified.
  • Operator identity: the Vietnamese company names (VIETBASE, DTL Group) and the playbook suggest a Vietnamese studio, unverified.
