# "Watched 20 ads and didn't make a single image": a camera app that went nowhere for half a year, renamed "AI Photo Editor" and bought to 920k installs

**What it is** An AI photo-editing app on Android: auto cutout, background swap, and AI photo and video templates, plus a manual camera. Users earn coins by watching ads to unlock generated images, with small in-app purchases on the side.

**Why it took off** The product didn't take off. The developer used the cash flow from another tens-of-millions-install app (NestAI) to turn a stalled old camera package into an "AI photo editing" pitch that's easier to advertise, then ran pulsed Facebook buys in cheap markets like Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and India.

**C** **How you could approach it** Stop building generic AI photo editing. Teams with paid-acquisition chops can copy its "repositioning an old package and then scaling" and "rewarded ads for coins" playbook, moving into narrow niches like ID-photo background swaps, product hero shots, and holiday templates, and skipping ads until the first image has been generated.

C grade: the category is a decade-old red ocean, and even within photography it ranks only mid-table. Growth came from a sibling app's cash flow and skilled buying, which followers can't replicate. The playbook has things to learn from, but copying the product isn't worth it. Still almost no one knows about it

Snaptou is an AI cutout and background-swap photo app on Google Play, built by Vietnamese small-tools maker Nuclear Man. It looks like a hit that hit 920k installs right after its October launch, but it's actually an old package that launched in March: it was originally "Camera + Photo Editor" and stayed lukewarm for half a year. After renaming it AI photo editing, the developer pushed installs up with waves of Facebook ads. The product itself has nothing new; what's worth looking at is the playbook, and why it's not something you should copy as-is.

### Two October 12 reviews

On Oct 12 2026, a user named David George left a comment on Snaptou's Google Play page:

> I watch 20 adds and didn't create a single picture. (I watched 20 ads and didn't make a single image.)

The next day, Julie Mcalister left a positive review, but about the same thing:

> So far I like it! I don't mind watching few ads to win coins for a photo! (So far I like it! I don't mind watching a few ads to earn coins for a photo!)

On the same day there was also a one-star review that 25 people marked as helpful: "Garbage ads pop up as soon as you open it. Uninstalled on the spot."

These three reviews are all the text reviews under the app (Google Play US page, 11-06). They make two things clear. First, the money mainly comes from ads: users watch rewarded ads to earn coins and spend them on one AI-generated image, with in-app purchases as a supplement ($0.99–9.99 per item). Second, the reviews cluster on October 11–12, the same days it gained roughly 50k installs in two days (AppstoreSpy estimate). These users were brought in by a wave of ads.

### What it is: cutout, background swap, templates, plus a manual camera tacked on

The store page's title is now "Snaptou: AI Photo Editor," and the first paragraph is about AI cutout: add a photo, automatically remove the background, pick a background from templates, and save to your gallery. The October 22 update added features that are easiest to advertise right now: AI Photos (studio portraits, AI art), AI Video (dance videos and trending templates like "Living Memory," which animates old photos), template backgrounds, and one-tap background removal. The manual camera (white balance, ISO, shutter) got moved to the back.

Photoroom, Picsart, and Hypic had these features long ago, and they do them better; Google Photos, Samsung Galaxy AI, and the iPhone Photos app even offer free subject removal built in. Snaptou isn't selling capability; it's selling "one step to a finished image" plus a pile of ready-made templates.

### It's not a new app: an old package with a new positioning

The store page and the data sites all list the launch date as October 9. But AppstoreSpy records the first release as March 20, and by June 12 it already had about 34k installs (AppstoreSpy estimate). The "went from 4 to 0k in 920 weeks" story is an illusion created by a reset launch date.

The clues are still on the developer's website. The site linked from the store page is a free netlify subdomain named ads-nuclear-man, and its page title is still "Snaptou: Camera & Photo Editor" today. The selling points are manual camera, Boomerang looping video, and filters, with not a single "AI" in sight. The package name collage.retouch also shows it was originally named for collage and retouching.

Inference: the camera positioning wasn't working, so in early October it was relaunched as AI photo editing, and the store's first-release date was reset as a result. The repositioning and the scaling happened at the same time, which is no coincidence. A "remove the background, turn it into a beach in one second" before-and-after is much easier to advertise than "you can adjust ISO."

### Where the installs came from: ad budget switched on and off

Installs by month (6–October are AppstoreSpy estimates; from 10-29 onward, Google Play install counts):

| Timeline | Daily new installs | Month-end cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| June | 100–900 | About 38k |
| July | Averaging 1–2 thousand, some days 5–10 thousand | About 85k |
| August | 5–9 thousand, 8-17 single day +23k | About 270k |
| September | 3–5 thousand, several days near zero | About 380k |
| October | 10-08 +35k, 10-16 single day +138k, 10-17~20 then nearly stalled again | About 840k |
| 10-29 → 11-06 | 7 days +79k | 920k |

The numbers from the last 9 days tell the story: 10-31 +29k, 11-01 and 11-02 were each 0,11-03 +32k, and 11-05 dropped back to 0. Organic growth doesn't look like this. This is a curve of budget turned on, then off, with the next wave decided by what the returns look like.

Where the ads are running, you can see it directly. There's a Facebook page called "Snaptou" with only 763 followers that keeps posting Reels: "Transform your photos & videos with AI! … Get Snaptou now!", plus a Spanish version, "Snaptou IA: Fotos y videos increíbles". A post from Nov 4 got 32k views and only 3 interactions (Facebook, 11-06). A page with 763 followers pulling tens of thousands of views can only be bought ads. Google app install ads are probably running too, since tool apps like this almost always buy them, but I found no direct evidence.

Volume comes mainly from where installs are cheap. It has only appeared on the Photography category's Top Free chart, with its best rank in Taiwan at #32, followed by Singapore #46, Vietnam #49, India #53, and Spain #63. In the US its best is only #158. It has never charted on the overall or Top Grossing charts in any country.

On TikTok, X, Reddit, and in the media, there's no organic content about it at all. The only results are APK mirror sites and data sites.

### Retention and money: hard to tell

920k installs, 218 ratings (11-06). On average only 1 in 4,200 installers rates it, which is typical of low-intent ad users. The rating distribution is odd too: 1-star ×31, 4-star and 5-star ×93 each, 2- and 3-star stuck at 0, and this has been the pattern every day since Oct 29. It could be Google's display handling for small samples, or it could be steering for good reviews. Unverified.

Revenue isn't public. One data site uses a model to estimate about 118k MAU and over $50k monthly revenue, but that figure has no basis. It has never appeared on the Top Grossing chart, and the first few reviews suggest it relies mainly on rewarded ads, so revenue per user is probably very low (inference).

### What's propping up its ad spend is another tens-of-millions app

Nuclear Man has four apps on Google Play (11-06):

| App | Installs | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|
| NestAI: AI Home, Room Planner | 10.3M | +144k |
| Snaptou: AI Photo Editor | 920k | +79k |
| Horae: Tarot & Daily Horoscope | 146k | +86k |
| AI Palm Reading - Hastgy | 31k | +25k |

NestAI's listing date was also reset: the marked date is Jun 24, yet it already had 5.45M installs by May 10. This developer's infrastructure is as cheap as it gets: a personal Outlook email, a privacy policy on Google Sites, and a free netlify subdomain for the website. It runs the same playbook: test several themes under one account at once, and pour more money into whichever one pays back. Snaptou gets its budget in waves because of the cash flow and paid-acquisition experience from NestAI's tens of millions of installs.

### Who it's competing with

This category is crowded, and has been for a decade:

| Competitors | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Compared with Snaptou |
|---|---|---|
| Picsart | 1.45B installs, +1.77M in 7 days | Full-featured with a community, top of the Photography Top Grossing chart |
| Remini | 620M, 7 days +830k | Image enhancement and AI portraits, very high subscription revenue |
| Photoroom | 181M, 7 days +165k | A proper cutout and product-photo player, aimed at e-commerce sellers |
| Hypic (ByteDance) | 130M, 7 days +760k | Broader AI template library, with traffic funneled from CapCut |
| Lyrebird-family background swap | Two packages of about 40M and 37M | Same feature, same paid-acquisition playbook, 6 years early |
| Muselab AI, AI Photo Beauty Editor Studio | 5.36M and 2.97M, +920k and +810k in 7 days | New paid-acquisition packages from this year's 3 to April, growing 10 times faster than Snaptou |
| Picsgen, PixGen, AI Photo Editor: Art Studio, etc. | 110k–1.8M | Same-name clones that appeared 7 to September |

+79k in the last 7 days sounds like a lot, but within the Photography category, 151 apps are growing faster. It isn't performing well in this category; it's just a sample that budget has pushed into the middle of the pack.

### If it were you

**Verdict: copy its playbook, not its product.** "AI cutout + background swap + templates" has been a decade-long red ocean, and Snaptou itself only reached the middle. It runs because of cash flow from a tens-of-millions sibling app, plus a practiced routine of "relabel old packages, pulse paid acquisition, rewarded ads to recoup costs." Followers can't get either of those off the shelf.

**Who it suits** : small teams that already have a few Android tool packages, have run Meta or Google app install ads, and can work out what one install costs versus how much ad revenue one user generates. For you, the most useful thing to copy is this: if an old package stops working, don't abandon it. Change the title and description, reposition around the AI feature that makes the easiest before-and-after shots, and scale up again.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who hasn't run ads and is counting on organic store search. Snaptou stuffs its title and package name with "AI photo editor" and "remove background", and its best Photography rank is only around #30, so organic installs are negligible. It's also a poor fit for anyone targeting paying users in Europe or the US. This playbook's volume and cheap installs come from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, and Latin America.

**How to do it** : don't build another generic "AI Photo Editor". If you follow this, pick a narrow scenario that neither Snaptou nor the big players have covered well: swapping ID photo backgrounds for a specific country, product hero images for a certain type of e-commerce seller, or holiday templates. Narrow-scenario ad creatives are just as easy to shoot, and the competition is far thinner (inference). For monetization, use rewarded ads to earn coins plus small in-app purchases, but don't copy "ads the moment you open it" or "watch 20 videos before you can make one image". Two of the three reviews complain about exactly that, so show no ads before the first image is generated.

**How to get users** : Facebook / Instagram Reels plus Google app install ads, with creatives that only show before-and-after shots, one per template, starting with English and Spanish. Run budgets on a "spend for three days, pause two, check payback" rhythm, push for Photography category ranks first in cheap markets like Taiwan, Vietnam, and India, and only add money once payback works out.

**Timing** : there's no window to talk about here. The category is long saturated, and the free cutout in system photo galleries keeps getting better, so the later you start, the less "one-tap output" is worth.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

- If Snaptou enters the Photography Top Grossing chart in any country before December, or its rating count climbs past a thousand within a month, that means rewarded ads plus in-app purchases are paying back well in this category, and it's worth running the numbers carefully.

- Conversely, if its daily new installs flatten to near zero after late November, even matrix developers with cash flow have stopped spending, which means the math doesn't work.

- If Google Play starts cracking down on "resubmitting and resetting the listing date", or renamed apps stop appearing under "New apps", then the reposition-an-old-package trick stops working.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Meta (Facebook/Instagram) video ads** : the Facebook page "Snaptou" (id 61589541243545) has only 763 followers, its Reels get 5.4 thousand to 32k views each with only 2-3 interactions, which indicates the views are bought; it has English and Spanish creatives, and the latest post is 11-04; related pages include "Trusted Mobile Apps - For You"

- Inferred **Google App Campaigns and similar** : stepped pulse scaling (10-16 single-day +138k, with near-zero days in between), spend concentrated in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, and Spanish-speaking regions; the googleads library doesn't track this developer

- **Confirmed** **Old package relabeled, relisted** : AppstoreSpy first records it as 2026-03-20, with the store launch date reset to 10-09; the landing page title still reads "Camera & Photo Editor", while the store listing now says "AI Photo Editor"

- **Confirmed** **Store search ASO** : package name and title stuffed with ai/photo/editor/retouch and remove background; best Photography rank only around #30

- Inferred **TikTok / X / media** : TikHub, x-radar, Jina/Exa/Brave found no organic content or coverage

- Inferred **Cross-promotion from the developer's own matrix** : the same developer's NestAI has 10.3M installs that could feed traffic; no evidence of it

## Snaptou: AI Photo Editor (com.ai.photo.editor.collage.retouch), and why it got this far

Research date: 2026-11-06 | Channel: Google Play | Developer: Nuclear Man (AppGoblin lists as Vietnam)

### Bottom line

Snaptou isn't a new hit, and the product itself didn't carry it. It's an old package from Nuclear Man, a small tool-matrix developer: launched 2026-03 as "Camera + Retouch", stayed lukewarm for a long time; later renamed "AI Photo Editor", led with AI cutout and background swap, added AI photo and video templates, then bought installs in **waves** through Facebook/Instagram video ads, reaching 920k installs in total. Its users come from ads: 920k installs produced only 218 ratings, it has never charted in any country's Top Grossing, and it sits mid-pack on the Photography Top Free chart. It doesn't rank near the top of its category: +79k in the last 7 days, and 151 apps in Photography are growing faster. What's worth studying is the playbook: reposition an old package, templatize AI features, pulse paid acquisition. The product itself has no differentiation.

### 1. Data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; history estimated from AppstoreSpy)

- **The listing date was reset** : the store launch date and data card both show 2026-10-09, but AppstoreSpy records the first launch as **2026-03-20** (appstorespy.com app page), and the history backfilled in our app_day_ext shows **it already had 33,906 installs by 2026-06-12** . The recall rationale says "from 0 to 920k in 28 days", which is misled by the reset date and doesn't hold.

- **Install curve** (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates, spread evenly between observations):
    - June: 100–900 per day, cumulative 34k → 38k
    - July: averages about 1–2 thousand per day, with pulse days of 5–10 thousand in a single day (7-09 +7.4k, 7-21 +10.3k), 85k at month end
    - August: scaling up, 5–9k daily, 8-17 single day +23k, about 270k by month end
    - September: 3–5k daily, with several days in the middle where spend nearly stopped (9-04 +110,9-18 +49), about 380k by month end
    - October: the sprint. 10-08 +35k, 10-11~12 two days +50k, **10-16 single day +138k** , 10-21~23 three days +80k; 10-17~20 and 10-27~28 nearly stopped again
    - 10-29 → 11-06:841k → 920k, **7 days +79k** , averaging about 10k a day (our own app_day)
    - The curve is stepped: every few days there's a jump of tens of thousands in a single day, with near-zero days in between. That's a typical on-off paid acquisition pattern. Organic growth doesn't look like this.

- **Charts** : only charted in the PHOTOGRAPHY category's Top Free chart. Best rank is #32 in Taiwan (chart_rank), #46 in Singapore, #49 in Vietnam, #53 in India, #63 in Spain, and at best #158 in the US. Each day it appears on charts in 8–15 countries. **It has never charted on the overall or Top Grossing chart in any country.**

- **Ratings** : 218 ratings, averaging 4.0 stars, with only 3 written reviews (app_snap 11-06), so roughly one rating for every 4,200 installs. The distribution is odd: [1★ 31, 2★ 0, 3★ 0, 4★ 93, 5★ 93]. The 4-star and 5-star counts were exactly equal for several days in a row, and the 2- and 3-star counts stayed at 0 (every day since 10-29). This could be Google's display handling for small samples, or incentivized ratings. Not verified.

- **Monetization** : listed as "contains ads" with in-app purchases of $0.99–$9.99 (app_snap). AppGoblin's model estimates about 118k MAU and $50k+ monthly revenue, 76% of it from in-app purchases (appgoblin.info, modeled estimate, not verified). It has never appeared on the Top Grossing chart, so revenue is most likely low.

- **Version** : 10-29 has been current since 1.1.6,10-31 1.1.7; the store's update date is 10-22. The latest release notes add AI Photos (Studio, Art Generator), AI Video (trending templates like Dance and Living Memory), Template Background, and one-tap background removal.

### 2. Repositioned: from "camera" to "AI photo editing"

- The developer landing page [ads-nuclear-man.netlify.app/](https://ads-nuclear-man.netlify.app/) still has the title **"Snaptou: Camera & Photo Editor"** , pitching manual camera controls (white balance, ISO, shutter), Boomerang looping video, and filters, and **never mentions AI** .

- The store listing now reads "Snaptou: AI Photo Editor", with the first paragraph of the description switched to AI cutout, AI background replacement, and portrait and product photos. Camera features were moved further down. The package name contains collage.retouch, which suggests the app was originally named around collage and retouching.

- Inference: the original camera positioning wasn't working, so in early October it was relaunched as AI photo editing and resubmitted, which reset the store release date to 10-09. Right at that point (from 10-08), daily spend scaled from 30k to 140k. The repositioning and the scale-up happened together, which suggests the "AI photo editing" angle is more efficient for paid acquisition: the creatives are easier to shoot, and AI before/after comparisons draw more clicks.

### 3. Developer Nuclear Man (googleplay library developer/app tables + website)

| App | Installs (11-06) | 7-day gain | Store launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| NestAI: AI Home, Room Planner | 10.3M | +144k | 2026-06-24 already had 5-10M in 5.45 (also reset) |
| Snaptou: AI Photo Editor | 920k | +79k | 2026-10-09 (actual 2026-03-20) |
| Horae: Tarot & Daily Horoscope | 146k | +86k | 2026-10-12 |
| AI Palm Reading - Hastgy | 31k | +25k | 2026-10-23 |

- The contact email is a personal Outlook address (nuclear.backup.260126@outlook.com), the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites, and the website uses a free Netlify subdomain. Snaptou's subdomain is literally named **ads-nuclear-man** . AppGoblin lists the developer's country as Vietnam.

- NestAI's tens of millions of installs and its cash flow are the foundation that lets this developer fund paid acquisition for several new apps at once.

### 4. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | Snaptou and how it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Picsart AI Photo Editor | Android / iOS / web | 2011 | 1.45B installs, +7M in 1.77 days, top of the Photography Top Grossing chart | Far more features and a community; Snaptou is a lightweight cutout + templates app |
| Photoroom | Android / iOS / web | 2020 | 181M, 7 days +165k | The real "background removal + product photos" player, aimed at e-commerce sellers. Snaptou copies this pitch with less depth |
| Background Eraser(handyCloset) | Android | 2014 | 176M, 7 days +103k | Long-established manual/semi-automatic cutout tool; Snaptou is fully automatic plus templates |
| Photo Background Changer (Lyrebird family) | Android | 2019–2020 | Two apps with 37M and 40M | Same feature, same paid-acquisition playbook, 6 years early |
| remove.bg | Android/web/API | 2020 | 28M | Background removal only, with a B2B API |
| Hypic (ByteDance) | Android/iOS | 2023 | 130M, 7 days +760k | A big-company product with a fuller set of AI templates and retouching, and it can funnel users from CapCut |
| Remini(Bending Spoons) | Android/iOS | 2019 | 620M, 7 days +830k | Image enhancement and AI portraits, with very high subscription revenue |
| Muselab AI / AI Photo Beauty Editor Studio(ATQ) | Android | 2026-03~04 | 5.36M / 2.97M, +7k / +920k in 810 days | New paid-acquisition apps from the same period, growing 10 times faster than Snaptou |
| Picsgen, PixGen, AI Photo Editor: Art Studio, etc. | Android | 2026-07~09 | 110k–1.8M, +7k–57k in 250 days | The same "AI Photo Editor" title and template approach, with almost no differentiation between them |
| Google Photos Magic Editor / Samsung Galaxy AI / iOS subject lifting | Big-company features | 2023–2024 | Built into the system | Phone systems already offer cutout and background replacement for free. Snaptou sells "templates + one-step output" |

Bottom line: this category is crowded and a decade-old red ocean. Snaptou has no edge in features, scale, or launch timing.

### 5. Growth tactics

- **Meta (Facebook/Instagram) video ads, confirmed** : There's a Facebook page named "Snaptou" (page id 61589541243545) with only 763 followers that has posted a series of Reels, titled "Transform your photos & videos with AI! … Get Snaptou now!", "AI Magic for Your Photos!", and a Spanish one, "Snaptou IA: Fotos y videos increíbles". Single videos get 5.4k to 32k views, but only 2–3 engagements. These are ad-driven views, not organic spread. The latest one was posted on 11-04 (facebook.com/61589541243545/videos/..., found and read via Jina search). The related pages list includes "Trusted Mobile Apps - For You," and the same related-pages cluster also shows a Swahili ad for their AI Palm Reading app, suggesting the same ad account system (whether it's related to the Play developer "Trusted mobile apps" is unverified).

- **Google App Campaigns or similar, inferred** : Standard for Android utility apps, and the stepped scale-up fits. Our googleads library doesn't track this one, so we can't confirm it.

- **Store search ASO** : the title is "AI Photo Editor," the package name stuffs in ai/photo/editor/collage/retouch, and the description repeats keywords like AI photo editor, AI image editor, and remove background. Results are limited: its best category ranking is only around #30.

- **Old app repositioned and relisted** : the store release date was reset to 10-09, which may cause the store's "New Apps" section to treat it as a new app (inferred).

- **TikTok / X / press / Reddit** : a TikHub search for "Snaptou" only returned Snapchat dating videos. x-radar had 0 posts over 30 days. Jina/Exa/Brave only found APK mirror sites and data sites (uptodown, appgoblin, appstorespy, indietower, and similar). There is no organic content or press coverage at all.

- **Cross-promotion within their portfolio** : they could funnel users from NestAI's tens of millions of users, but there's no evidence of this.

### 6. Why it took off (it only reached a moderate level)

1. The developer has a proven playbook of "tools + ads/in-app purchases + paid acquisition," plus the cash flow from NestAI, so it can keep funding an old app that's been lukewarm for half a year (NestAI has 10.3M installs).

2. After switching to "AI photo editing / background replacement / AI video templates," the ad creatives hit harder and paid acquisition got more efficient. The repositioning overlaps in time with the October scale-up (app_day_ext from 10-08 onward, 35k–138k daily).

3. Spend is concentrated in markets where installs are cheap: Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, and Spanish-speaking regions (the best chart_rank positions are all in tw/sg/vn/in/es). Cheap installs are recouped through ads plus small in-app purchases.

4. Retention and willingness to pay: ratings are very few, there's no review sample, it's nowhere on the Top Grossing chart, and most users are inferred to be low-intent ad users.

### 7. Differentiation

Almost none. The combination of "automatic cutout + background templates + filters + manual camera" was already done by Photoroom, Picsart, the Lyrebird family, and Hypic, and done better. System photo galleries also include cutout tools. The only arguably distinct angle is "camera + AI retouching + video templates in one app," but that isn't why it grew. It grew because of ad spend and creative efficiency after the repositioning.

### 8. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **almost nobody knows about it yet** . No public revenue, no press or X discussion, and only APK mirror and data sites index it.

- Copycats: I haven't seen anyone explicitly copying it. Many new "XX: AI Photo Editor" apps appeared in the same period (Picsgen, PixGen, Art Studio, Snapiro, and others), but that's the whole category converging on the same look, not copying this app.

### 9. What others can learn

- If an old app isn't working, don't rush to launch a new one: change the title, description, and positioning, pitch AI features that make for easier-to-shoot ad creatives, then scale spend again.

- Pulse-style paid acquisition: concentrate spend in bursts every few days, push for a category chart spot in small countries, then pause and check returns.

- Paid acquisition focuses on low-cost-install markets: Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, and Latin America. Creatives are localized in several languages (English, Spanish, Swahili).

- Zero-cost infrastructure: a Netlify landing page + Google Sites privacy policy + a personal email. One developer account tests several themes at once.

### 10. Still unclear

- How much was spent on ads and the ROI; whether Google UAC was used (our ad library doesn't track it).

- Actual revenue: AppGoblin's $50k/month is a modeled estimate, and the app isn't on the Top Grossing chart, so it's not reliable.

- Retention and engagement: no review sample.

- Whether the odd rating distribution was incentivized or manipulated.

- What the relationship is between the "Trusted Mobile Apps" Facebook pages, the Play developer "Trusted mobile apps," and Nuclear Man.

- The exact date of the repositioning (inferred to be early October).
