Drop in your lecture notes, get exam questions out: a 22-year-old Korean university student's exam-week app that picked up 620k sign-ups from Reels

What it is An AI study app for Korean university students cramming before exams: upload lecture notes, online courses, or class recordings, and get summaries, practice questions, flashcards, and an AI tutor that only answers from your own materials.

Why it took off It spread in batches across Instagram Reels through student creators timed to exam week: comments that ask for a keyword to get the link, subscriptions handed out in exchange for campus ambassador roles, and users who say they installed it after seeing a Reel. Free recording transcription drives sign-ups, and a cap of 2 PDFs per week pushes people to pay right when exams hit.

BHow you could follow it Copy its exam-week creator playbook in another Instagram-heavy student market (Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc.), and build only the "notes into questions" product while fixing what users complained about most: cite sources for every question, don't output anything beyond the notes, charge a one-time fee for the exam period, and make refunds a one-click process.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and can be copied to another country, and people who know it are mostly within Korean university circles; but the product has no moat, free tools from big companies sit right next to it, demand shows up only twice a semester, users cancel once exams end, and the original's App Store reviews this year already have more one-star ratings than five-star. UnivAI (유니브 AI) is an AI study app for Korean university students cramming before exams: upload lecture PDFs, YouTube courses, or class recordings, and it gives you summaries, exam-style questions, flashcards, and mind maps. Its features are about the same as dozens of similar tools worldwide. What made it break out is two things: it compressed the pitch into one line, "notes into exam questions," and it put all its creator promotion into the two or three weeks before midterms and finals. Anyone who wants to follow can copy the playbook, but its own bad reviews show this business struggles to keep people.

A video asking about GPAs

In Oct 2026, a week before midterms, UnivAI's own TikTok account @univai8 posted a short video titled "이분들 학점이 왜이리 높지 😭" (Why are these people's GPAs so high). The format is street interviews: they stop several university students and ask their GPA, and commenters work out that Seoul National University uses a 4-point scale, which suggests the students asked were from SNU (inferred). By Nov 4.3 the video had about 6k views and 830k likes. The most-liked comment (21 likes) is "5,919이 젤 행복해보임" (The one who got 2.3 looks the happiest). The person who reported 2.3 seems to be the happiest.

The only product-related element in the video is the tag #유니브. One commenter saw through it: "유니브 홍보 ㅎㄷㄷ" (UnivAI's ad, scary). The same account then posted "너의학점은 😃" (What's your GPA, 129k views) and "서울대생 학점 맞추기" (Guessing SNU students' GPAs, 28k views) over the following week. The previous concentrated push was in 2025 December, just before finals; the "너의 학점은 ??" video from then got 145k views (TikTok, 11-06).

Next, a five-star App Store Korea review from Sep 29: "유명해져 아니 유명해지지마 나만 알거야 인스타 릴스에 '나도' 댓글달아야지만 겨우 알 수 있게 할거야" (Get famous? No, don't get famous, I want to keep it to myself. You can only find out by commenting "나도" (me too) under the Instagram Reels). It captures how it acquires users: leave one word under a Reel and get the link sent to you by automatic DM.

What it is

Open UnivAI, drop in this semester's lecture PDFs, a YouTube course, or a class you recorded, and it produces:

  • Summaries and "쉬운 설명" (simple explanations), with source page numbers;
  • Exam-style multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions, with wrong answers drilled again and an explanation of which concept you got wrong;
  • Flashcards, mind maps, and mock exams;
  • An AI tutor that answers only from the materials you uploaded, by text or voice.

Real-time transcription of class recordings is unlimited on the free plan, which is the sign-up hook. The free plan allows only 2 PDFs and 2 YouTube videos per week, and a course's exam notes usually exceed that, so the paywall naturally lands during exam week. Pro has no upload limit; reviews mention a price of ₩9,900 per month (about $7); Ultra adds unlimited mock exams and voice tutoring, for people studying several courses at once. On Google Play, in-app purchases are priced $6.99–$119.99. On the web, payments in Korea run through KakaoPay and Toss, and overseas through Polar (official site, 11-06).

Who made it

The developer is Singularity Inc. (株式会社싱귤래러티), located on the Hanyang University road in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, right next to Hanyang University's ERICA campus. The CEO, Kim Seo-hyeon, is 22 years old and a student in the AI major at Hanyang University ERICA. In 2023 he won a top prize at a GPT app startup competition, and the school gave about ₩29M in startup support (JoongAng Ilbo, 2025-11-26). The company was founded in 2024 June, and in 2025 August it received seed investment from accelerator Primer and took first place in the DeepTech track of the Korean SMEs and Startups Ministry's startup support program (founder's LinkedIn, thevc).

In other words, the people building it are users themselves: university students who are studying and go through exam week every semester.

620k sign-ups far exceed 98k Android installs, so most come from iPhone, iPad, and web. Korean university students have a high share of iPhone, and many take notes on iPad, so this distribution makes sense. Android growth is now flat after midterms, so the peak in mid-to-late October before exams isn't visible.

Almost all acquisition runs through Instagram, and all of it is timed to exam week:

  1. Paid creator promotion by university students. In 2025 December and 2026 October, batches of university student Reels tagged #협찬 (sponsored) and #광고 (ad) appeared, with captions like "시험 대비는 유니브 ai 하나면 된다" (For exam prep, UnivAI alone is enough), linking to the official landing page. Some posts don't label themselves as ads and instead emphasize "(광고X)" (not an ad) as a recommendation; whether they were paid can't be determined.
  2. Comments that ask for a keyword to get the link. This is the "나도" from the comment at the start. Comments boost the Reel's engagement, and the DM delivers the link straight to the person.
  3. Campus ambassadors. The official "AI STUDY CREW" recruits members whose full month's subscription is reimbursed, in exchange for them creating content themselves.
  4. Naver blog. Searching "유니브 AI 후기" (UnivAI review) or "유니브 AI 가격" (UnivAI price) turns up a string of "솔직 후기" (honest reviews), mostly in the style of trial-group write-ups, catching people who saw a Reel and then searched.
  5. Owned accounts. IG @univai_official has 18k followers; the TikTok account is the one from the opening, and it also posts heavily before exams.

Users themselves admit they came from Reels. Several quotes pinned on the official homepage say things like "필기한걸 토대로 문제 만들어준다는 릴스 보고 깔아봤는데" (I saw a Reel saying it makes questions from your notes, so I installed it). Separately, an Apple Korea editor mentioned it in an iPad recommendation article.

Whether it has run paid Meta ads can't be verified from public information.

What users say: specific praise, specific complaints

The people who praise it say the same thing: the questions are better than other apps'. "Other apps merge two different concepts from the same page into one question, this one doesn't, and the questions don't repeat" (10-21); "For question generation, I think it's number one among AI apps" (9-09); "벼락치기 할 때 개사기임" (Absolutely broken for cramming, 10-18). One student wrote a feature checklist in a review: whether the recording transcription is searchable, whether AI tutoring can read materials for the same course together, and whether exam info images from campus forums can be put in the course folder.

But since June 2026, new App Store Korea reviews have clearly had more one-star than five-star ratings, and the complaints cluster around three issues:

  • It made up questions from things not in the notes. Comments like "피피티에 없는 내용으로 마음대로 문제 만듦" (Made up questions on content not in the PPT, 6-16) have appeared more than a dozen times. In September someone wrote: "Since the summary model switched to GPT it got worse… I moved to Lilys AI and it's much better."
  • It failed during exam week. Crashes, slow loading, and recording transcription that heats the phone and drains the battery. One review: "I recorded, uploaded, and not a single word was transcribed; when I tried to export to another AI, the recording was gone, and that was a whole class for me" (11-01). Another one-star title reads "잘가시게 비록 나의 중간고사는 버려졌지만" (Goodbye, my midterms are already ruined, though, 10-23).
  • Subscriptions can't be canceled. From June to August there was a string of "I canceled and they still charged me" and "I emailed for weeks and no one replied." One person said it bluntly: "They pushed the viral marketing so hard that I paid" (11-01).

There's also a more basic signal: "Exams are over and I forgot to cancel. Can you refund this month? I'll pay again during exam period" (6-24). Users need it only during exam season, twice a semester, for two or three weeks each time. That shape makes it hard to keep people through renewals; it has to win attention again every exam period.

Who it's competing with

Copycats have already shown up: "벼락치기AI - 대학생 시험 공부,PDF요약·퀴즈·필기" (listed 2026-03, 144 ratings in the Korean store) and "스터디 AI - 강의 녹음, PDF 요약, 모의고사", copying even the title structure. Both are still tiny (App Store, 11-06).

At the end of the day, the tech isn't the moat. What sets it apart from rivals is serving one scenario only, Korean university exam week, plus Instagram campus distribution that follows the exam calendar.

If it were you

B, worth a try. The playbook is clear and copyable, but the product itself has no moat: big-tech free tools sit right next to it, the need only shows up twice a semester, and the original's own reviews are already slipping.

Who it fits: one or two people, one of whom is already embedded in a student market that's heavy on Instagram (Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia), who knows or can reach a batch of campus creators. The other makes the "lecture notes → questions" accuracy solid.

Who it doesn't fit: anyone aiming at the English market (Gizmo, Turbo, Quizlet are already crowded); anyone trying to go head-on with UnivAI in Korea (it and Lilys already own the mindshare, and copycats can't get traction); anyone counting on subscription renewals for long-term retention (users cancel once exams are over).

How to do it: one country, one language, one scenario: "turn lecture notes into exam questions before the test." Make UnivAI's most-criticized weak spots your selling points: every question cites the page number and original sentence from the notes, nothing outside the notes gets generated; recordings are stored locally before transcription so no data is lost during exam week; cancel and refund in one click. Price it as an "exam week pass" (say, a one-time payment for one month or two weeks), not default auto-renewal. That actually sells better.

How to get users: copy its calendar. Start three weeks before exams, recruit 20–30 university student creators to post Reels with the line "drop this week's notes in, get a set of questions out"; auto-DM anyone who comments a keyword with the link; trade free subscriptions for content from campus ambassadors; and publish a few "honest review" blog posts to catch search. Run your own accounts on street interviews about grades and exams, and don't pitch the product directly.

Deadline: Japanese university finals run from late January to early February in 2027, Taiwan's finals are in mid-January. Have the product built and the first batch of creators signed by mid-December, or you'll be stuck waiting for the 6–July round.

Signs you misread it: ① after the first exam-season push, paid conversion can't cover creator costs, and new sign-ups drop to zero a week after exams, so every round starts from zero spend again; ② NotebookLM or Gemini launches a free student "generate questions from notes" feature in your country and it spreads through campuses; ③ UnivAI itself expands to Japan and Taiwan with the same creator playbook. That would confirm the path is right, but you'd be competing with the original for the same creators.

One line

An AI study app built for Korean university students cramming for exams: upload lecture PDFs, YouTube courses, class recordings and handwritten notes, and get summaries, exam-style questions, flashcards, mind maps and an AI tutor that answers only from your materials. It took off mainly through paid campus creators in bulk on Instagram Reels (#협찬/#광고), plus comment-to-DM hooks where viewers comment "나도" to get the link, timed to midterm and final exam weeks. On the product side, it narrowed its features to "turn notes into questions," with word of mouth built on "easier than ChatGPT, and it reads handwriting too."

Note: the Play listing date 2026-07-30 may have been reset by a metadata change; iOS has been live since 2025-11-25, and the web version came earlier (the founder's blog/IG were already doing creator promotion at the end of 2025). 620k sign-ups versus 98k on Play means most users are on iOS and the web. Play installs are only visible from 10-29 onward, and growth has plateaued just after the midterms (late October), so this doesn't reflect the pre-exam peak.

4. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Instagram Reels paid creator promotion (confirmed): lots of university student accounts tagging #협찬 / #광고 on Reels, e.g. www.instagram.com/reel/DSFOqCpEtRP/ ("#협찬 … 시험 대비는 유니브 ai 하나면 된다", linking univai.co.kr/landingpage), www.instagram.com/reel/DSH3c76iYqT/, same video on Facebook; another "#광고 … 진짜 광고받기 전부터 구독하던 AI임요 #중간고사". Timing clusters around 2025-12 (finals) and 2026-10 (midterms).
  2. Comment-keyword DM hook (confirmed): an App Store user review reads "인스타 릴스에 '나도' 댓글달아야지만 겨우 알 수 있게" (apps.apple.com/kr/app/id6754797367, Sep 29 review). This is the common Korean IG tactic of "comment a keyword, get an auto-DM with the link," used to drive engagement and boost Reels distribution.
  3. Users admit they came from Reels (confirmed): the homepage of univai.co.kr features App Store reviews like "필기한걸 토대로 문제 만들어준다는 릴스 보고 깔아봤는데" and "저도 릴스에서 봐서 한번 깔아봤는데".
  4. Owned accounts: IG @univai_official, 18.1k followers, 2026-10-11 and 10-15 posting videos concentrated before midterms; the TikTok account univai4 has one video, "이분들 학점이 왜이리 높지 #시험기간 #중간고사", at about 830k views and another at about 129k (TikHub search 2026-11-06).
AI'" 2026-10-12, stressing it's not an ad; whether it was paid cannot be confirmed.
  6. "AI STUDY CREW" campus ambassadors (confirmed): an official Reels recruiting post, "시험 특화 AI툴, 유니브AI 1개월 구독료 전액 지원" (near https://www.instagram.com/reel/DeWyuN1hZyx/), trading free subscriptions for student content and word of mouth.
  7. Naver blog SEO (confirmed): several "유니브 AI 솔직 후기 / 가격 완전 정리" blog posts (m.blog.naver.com/jeongsodam00/224219347466, seau25/224218374472, pp6074/224218258642; the last blogger writes "협찬 문의", sponsorship inquiries). Mostly tester-style sponsored reviews that capture search traffic.
  8. App Store editorial feature (confirmed): an iPad story on Apple's Korean store mentions 유니브 AI (apps.apple.com/kr/ipad/story/id6804956431).
  9. Meta Ad Library: our metaads library did not track it (not finding it does not mean it wasn't run).

How the money comes back: the free tier's 2-PDF-per-week quota is just short of what one exam needs, so the week before exams is when people most likely upgrade to Pro; Ultra sells "unlimited mock exams + voice tutor" to people studying for several subjects at once. Creator content is concentrated around exam weeks, so the conversion window is short and precise.

5. Why it took off

  • Narrow, frequent, high-pain use case: Korean university students have one midterm and one final each semester, two rounds of 벼락치기 (cramming) per term, so demand has clear timing; the product compresses its pitch into one line: "drop in your lecture notes, get exam questions out."
  • Distribution and audience overlap heavily: Reels is the home turf of Korean college students; paid creators + comment-keyword DMs + campus ambassadors = cheap, repeated reach to the same people; users say directly that they downloaded after seeing Reels.
  • Word of mouth hits specific experiences: reviews praise "handwritten notes (bad handwriting) are still recognized," "question quality is better than other apps and not repetitive," "more convenient than ChatGPT"; the developer replies to each one (including "1학기 4점대 축하드려요", congratulating a student on a 3.x GPA).
  • Free hook + capped quota: unlimited free lecture-recording transcription drives signups, while PDF uploads are capped at 2 per week for paid users; exam weeks convert naturally.
  • Local payments and Korean language: KakaoPay/Toss payments, Korean-language lecture materials and questions; overseas competitors have not done this.

6. Differentiation

Compared with global competitors (Gizmo, Turbo, StudyFetch, ThetaWave), the features are nearly identical; compared with Korea's local Lilys AI, UnivAI doesn't do "summarize everything," only "university exams"; compared with NotebookLM/ChatGPT, it's an "exam template that needs no prompt writing." The real difference is audience positioning and local distribution tactics, not technology, which is why it took off; the product-level "question quality + handwriting recognition" is the reason people stay, not the reason they sign up.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: it's spreading within small circles. It's very active in Korean university IG circles (many creator posts, its own TikTok has a 800k-view video), but its revenue isn't public, it's not on TrustMRR, there's no discussion on X, and mainstream tech media hasn't reported on its growth; it only has company pages on thevc/innoforest.
  • Copycats: 벼락치기AI - 대학생 시험 공부, PDF요약·퀴즈·필기 (2 Labs, listed 2026-03-08, 144 iOS ratings in Korea, title nearly copied); 스터디 AI - 강의 녹음, PDF 요약, 모의고사 (iOS id 6760990243, title structure follows "강의 녹음·PDF 요약·퀴즈"); Apple's "customers also bought" also lists QuizEve and Notit. All are still small.

8. What others can learn

  • Pick an audience with fixed, recurring deadlines (exam weeks) and put all the content and budget into those two or three weeks.
  • IG Reels creator promotion + comment-keyword DM automation + campus ambassadors offered subscriptions can be copied in student markets that are heavy on IG, like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
  • Give the free tier a "growth hook" (unlimited recording transcription) and cap the "core value" (PDF count), so the paywall lands right before exams.
  • Pack the store title with scenario keywords ("강의 녹음·PDF 요약·퀴즈"); copycats have already proven the title works.

9. Uncertain

  • Revenue size and paid conversion unknown (thevc 2025 revenue requires a paid plan). 620k "signups" include web and likely many one-time users.
  • The creator promotion spend and whether they ran paid Meta ads are unverified (our ad library doesn't track it).
  • Whether the Play listing date 2026-07-30 is a new launch or a relaunch is unverified; the database doesn't have peak growth data from before the October midterms.
  • Whether it has expanded overseas, such as to Japan: the app supports 13 languages, has Polar overseas payments and an English Play title, but only charts on Play in Korea.
