Three weeks on the store, 230k installs in a week: Mistmere is a reskin
What it is: an Android tool for AI photo effects, photo-to-video, and face-scan hairstyle recommendations built on templates, making money from ads and in-app purchases.
Why it took off: an older package had already shown the templates work. The team relaunched under a new name to reach fresh app-store exposure, then concentrated Facebook ad spend in Mexico and Argentina to push it to #1 in its category chart.
CHow you could follow it: don't copy the product. Studios with paid-acquisition capability could learn the "once templates work, launch a new package and push it again" playbook, and build one feature (such as hairstyle matching) per package, testing it first in low-cost Spanish-speaking markets.

Mistmere: AI Photo Video Maker is an AI photo-effect and photo-to-video template app on Google Play. It launched in Oct 16, had 235k total installs by Nov 6, 230k of them in the last 7 days, and held #1 on Mexico's Photo & Video Top Free chart for 5 days straight. There's nothing new in the product: the same studio took Miuci AI, an older package that had already reached 1.46M installs, changed the name, added a "face-scan hairstyle recommendation" feature, and relaunched it, then bought ads and targeted cheap countries like Mexico to climb the charts. This piece covers how it took off, where the money comes from, and why a small team shouldn't copy it.
Nov 1: 13 Mexican users marked this review helpful
On Nov 1, 2026, Mexican user Javier Ramirez gave Mistmere 1 stars:
"Fake, nothing can be edited. The first thing it asks for is money." (es mentira no se puede editar nada. lo primero que te pide es dinero)
13 people marked it helpful, the most-liked review the app has gotten so far. A few hours later the same day, another Mexican user, Rebeca Polanco, was blunter: "Installed it and deleted it, a scam. The ad says free, it isn't, you have to pay."
At that point Mistmere had only 5,349 installs. The next day it reached #1 on Mexico's Photo & Video Top Free chart, and over the following four days installs climbed to 235k (Google Play page, 11-01 to 11-06). Users were complaining while installs kept rising, which is how apps like this grow, the same way its older package Miuci did a few months earlier.
What it is
The store page lists four blocks: AI effects (90s-style, Christmas, Halloween, anime, 3D, pencil sketch, "updated weekly"), photo-to-video (100+ birthday, anniversary, and travel templates), text-to-image, and an "AI face shape analysis": scan your face, it tells you whether you have an oval, round, square, or heart face, scores "overall attractiveness, skin tone harmony, and face-shape match", then recommends hairstyles and hair colors.
The first three blocks are identical to dozens of similar apps. Only the face-scan hairstyle feature is Mistmere's own addition, but standalone hairstyle try-on apps have existed for a long time (for example Vit Corp.'s AI Hairstyle Try On, with 2.68M installs).
Money comes from two places: the store labels it ad-supported, and in-app purchases run $6.99–$39.99 per item. From the reviews, a paywall pops up as soon as you open the app, with a lot of interstitial ads. It has never charted in the top grossing list of any country, so how much it actually earns can't be determined from the outside.
It's the same thing as Miuci
The developer is Funkedenic, with three apps on Google Play:
| App | Launched | Cumulative installs (11-06) | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shine It: ASMR Cleaning (mini game) | 2026-05-19 | 2.79M | +34k |
| Miuci AI: AI Photo & Video Gen | 2026-07-19 | 1.46M | +138k |
| Mistmere: AI Photo Video Maker | 2026-10-16 | 235k | +230k |
Mistmere and Miuci list the same developer website (aap875-ai-photo.web.app, an empty Firebase default page), the same contact email [email protected], and nearly identical feature lists. The email prefix is ASO (app store optimization), and the package name com.aiphoto.aivideo.aiportrait.generatorimage stuffs in every searchable keyword. The site-registration email has a Vietnamese name, and most of Miuci's reviews are in Vietnamese, so the team is probably based in Vietnam (inferred, not verified).
Mistmere launched on the same day as the last of the four days when Miuci pushed hard. The old app had already proven the template works, so a new app with a new name and icon could ride a fresh wave of exposure and chart again in its category. Nov 6, both apps were charting at once: Miuci at #3 in the US Photo & Video free chart, Mistmere at #1 and Miuci at #9 in the Mexico Photo & Video free chart.
The curve looks like paid acquisition
| Date | Total installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 1,733 | US Photography chart #55, charting in #56,8 countries |
| 10-31 to 11-01 | 5,349 | Spread to 25 countries in one go, with Mexico, Argentina and the US all in the top 5 |
| 11-02 | 39,806 | Mexico Photography free chart #1, holding until 11-06 |
| 11-04 | 79,756 | Mexico overall chart #9 (best rank); dropped out of the US Photography top 200 |
| 11-06 | 234,971 | +89k in one day; charting in 27 countries, Canada and Spain at #5 |
Source: Google Play page and Photography free chart, 10-29 to 11-06. A day at +0 followed by a jump of tens of thousands the next day is because store install counts refresh only every few days. It does not mean nobody installed on that day.
Two signs point to bought traffic. First, the shape of the chart run: twenty-odd countries appear on the same day, and the US disappears entirely on one day, which looks like ad budgets switched on and off by country (inferred). Organically grown apps don't behave like this. Second, the review rate: 235k installs produced only 82 ratings, about 0.035%. Even Miuci, which came from paid acquisition, has 0.2%, while normal organic apps usually sit at 0.3%–1%. People who come in from an ad install, hit the paywall, and uninstall without bothering to leave a bad review.
Where users come from
Facebook ads, with evidence. Mistmere has its own Facebook page that posts only one kind of video: a few seconds of effect demo, with captions like "Top1 app AI Generator for you" and "Free Download 👉". A reel posted on Nov 4 had 23k views and 158 reactions by Nov 6, yet the page was brand new with almost no followers, so those views were almost certainly bought (inferred). Reviews saying "the ad said it was free" also fit. How many ads ran and how much was spent is unknown. Google app ads are likely running too, since apps like this usually run on both platforms, but this is unconfirmed.
Targeting cheap countries. The main battlegrounds are Mexico and Argentina, where an install costs far less than in the US, and the bar to reach #1 on the Photography category chart is lower. Once it climbs, people browsing the category or searching "AI photo" see it, which brings in some organic installs.
Cross-promoting its own apps. On Oct 31, a 1-star review said "you have to download another app to use it." It looks like the app pushes another of its own apps, though I haven't verified whether that's Miuci or the small game.
No word of mouth. Searching "Mistmere" on TikTok returns a game character of the same name. Nobody mentioned it on X for 30 days. The only things found online are automatic listings on APK download sites.
5-star reviews have nothing much in them. Of the 22 5-star reviews, some read like "bien", "primera vez" (first time), "yanci Rivera 468". The ratings skew to both ends with the middle empty: 1 stars have 44 reviews, while 2 and 3 stars have 0 each. The sample is too small to move the ranking, and it looks like they were tapped out casually.
Who it's competing with
All of them. Since Nov 6, Google Play has been flooded with new apps doing AI photo effects, photo-to-video and AI avatars, and most of them run the same playbook:
| App | Launched | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| ATQ - AI Lab, a group of apps (AI Photo Beauty Editor Studio, Emberly, Piclux…) | From ¥2026-03 | 300–9M per app, main app +7k in 810 days |
| AI Photo Generator: Muselab | 2026-04 | 5.36M, 7 days +920k |
| AI Face Aging | 2026-02 | 7.13M, 7 days +570k |
| AI Photo Editor: Art Studio | 2026-09 | 1.83M, 7 days +250k |
| Snaptou, VidJoy, PixGen, FrameBloom, AsterLoop, etc. | 2026-09 to 10 | 3–900k, +7–3k in 80 days |
| Mistmere | 2026-10 | 235k, +230k in 7 days |
| PixVerse / Hailuo AI | 2024–2025 | 79.6M / 27.8M, with their own models |
Above them are the big players: Picsart, B612, ByteDance's Hypic, and Google Photos, which have all made AI effects and bringing photos to life free features. A single month brings a dozen-plus new apps like these, all using the same playbook. Nobody needs to copy Mistmere specifically.
If it were you
The short verdict: Not worth copying. This is the same studio putting the same template into a new app and buying traffic for it a second time. The only thing worth remembering: once a template works, launching a fresh app and running it again beats adding budget to the old one.
Who it suits: Studios already buying traffic for Android utility apps, with an AI image generation backend on hand, who know exactly what an install costs and what ad revenue returns. For you, Mistmere is a useful benchmark, not a new opportunity.
Not for: indie devs and small teams that haven't run paid ads. There's no organic content spread here, so without spending money you won't get traffic. Ratings of 2.6 and reviews like "says free but actually costs money" are the norm. There are dozens of competitors, and on top sit model-backed companies and big tech giving away the same features for free.
How to do it (if you're the studio described above): Stop building all-in-one apps. Mistmere's only new feature is face-scan hairstyle matching, which suggests they're also looking for one effect they can market on its own. Pick one effect and build one app around it, such as "does this hairstyle suit me," and make the store page, screenshots and ad creatives about that alone. Before launch, check how many installs the top ten Photography apps in your target country gain each week, and work out what it costs to reach #1.
How to acquire users: Facebook and Google app install ads, with before-and-after effect creatives. Start with cheap Spanish-speaking markets like Mexico and Argentina to reach #1, then decide whether to add Spain and the US. Don't advertise "free" and then charge as soon as the app opens. That is the most common complaint about Mistmere, and it drags down store conversion directly.
When to get in: There's no clear window. This category has been crowded for a year. If you want to use it as a practice run, use the Christmas and New Year holiday templates as creatives and finish your first small-budget test before mid-December.
What would show this read was wrong: ① Mistmere enters the top-grossing chart in Mexico or any other country, which would mean "paywall plus ads" in low-price markets brings in not just installs but real money; ② Mistmere is still in the top 5 of the Mexico Photography chart in late November while Funkedenic has released a third similar app, which would mean the reskin-new-app route is paying off and they are scaling it up; ③ The reverse: if Mistmere drops out of the Mexico top 20 within two weeks, or the store removes it, the paid push didn't pay back, or the reskinned app caught platform attention, and this playbook isn't worth learning.

Mistmere: AI Photo Video Maker (Funkedenic): why it got traction
Google Play, package com.aiphoto.aivideo.aiportrait.generatorimage, Photography category. Research date: 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay library (app_snap / app_day / chart_rank / review, collected once daily from 2026-10-29), the Play store page (read via Jina), public Facebook pages, TikHub, x-radar, and the metaads / googleads / tiktokads libraries.
Bottom line
This isn't a product innovation story. It's the standard playbook of a small tools-app studio, likely in Vietnam, that reskins the same AI photo/video template into a second app and buys installs (mostly on Meta) to push the new app. Mistmere shares its developer website with its older app, Miuci AI. It launched 3 weeks ago, concentrated paid acquisition in low-price markets like Mexico, gained about 230k installs in a week, and climbed to #1 on the Mexico Photography free chart. User ratings are polarized: 2.6 stars overall, with 44 of 80 ratings at 1 stars. The main complaints are "too many ads," "the ad said free but it costs money," and "you have to install another app." It earns back its cost through interstitial ads plus a few subscriptions and in-app purchases, not through retention.

The steps on the curve (+0 one day, +40k the next) come from Play's maxInstalls batch refresh, not from zero installs that day.
The chart path shows the ad spend rhythm: 10-29 first appeared in the US (55) and Vietnam (56); from 10-31 to 11-01 it spread to 25 countries fast, with Mexico, Argentina and the US hitting the top 5 at once; by 11-04 the US dropped off suddenly while Mexico, Spain, Canada and Hong Kong stayed in the top 5. This shape, "many countries at once, one country cut off suddenly," is what paid budgets look like when they're switched on and off by country. Organic spread doesn't look like this.
2. Developer Funkedenic: a re-skin matrix
This developer has 3 apps on Google Play (googleplay.app / developer):
| App | Launched | Total installs | 7-day gain | Developer website / email |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shine It: ASMR Cleaning (casual game) | 2026-05-19 | 2,788,014 | 33,968 | ahm002-shine-it.web.app / [email protected] |
| Miuci AI: AI Photo & Video Gen | 2026-07-19 | 1,462,270 | 138,317 | aap875-ai-photo.web.app / [email protected] |
| Mistmere: AI Photo Video Maker | 2026-10-16 | 234,971 | 229,622 | aap875-ai-photo.web.app / [email protected] |
- Mistmere and Miuci share the same Firebase developer site (the site is just the default Firebase page, 2026-10-22 scraped), and their feature descriptions (AI effects, photo-to-video, AI avatars) overlap heavily. Mistmere is Miuci's second package, with an "AI face analysis / hairstyle recommendation" feature added to differentiate it.
- The email prefix
aso.funkedenicand keyword-stuffed package names (aiphoto.aivideo.aiportrait.generatorimage) show they care a lot about store search (ASO). - Inferred location (unverified): the site contact email uses Vietnamese names (anhthanh…), Miuci's reviews are almost all in Vietnamese, and it sits permanently in the Vietnam Photography chart at #3. This looks like a Vietnamese tools-app studio. Vietnam is where Android "re-skinned tools + paid acquisition + ad monetization" is most concentrated.
- Two AI packages charting at once: 11-06 US Photography Top Free, Miuci #3; Mexico Photography, Mistmere #1 and Miuci #9.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram) paid video ads: evidence found. Mistmere has its own Facebook page (page id 61595802147512), which only posts short videos like "Top1 app AI Generator for you / Free Download 👉 / Use it for free 👉". One reel posted 11-04 had 22k views, 149 reactions and 6 comments. A newly created page with no followers getting that view count is almost certainly paid distribution (source: facebook.com/61595802147512/videos/2076026796369450). A user comment directly mentions the ad: "La instalé y la borré por mentirosos, en el anuncio decian que es gratis" (I installed it and deleted it for lying. The ad said it was free, Mexico, 11-01). Our metaads library didn't track this Page (not on our list; not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised).
- Google App Campaigns (UAC): possible, unverified. Neither the googleads nor tiktokads library is on our list. Apps like this usually run UAC on Play as well.
- Cross-promotion within their own apps: signs present. A comment says "te pide descargar otra app para usarla" (it asks you to download another app to use it, 10-31). That suggests the app pushes their other package (Miuci or Shine It) internally, sending traffic within the matrix.
- Store search (ASO): supporting role. Keyword-stuffed package names and titles, plus chart exposure after climbing the category charts, bring in some organic installs. But a 0.035% rating rate shows most of the users are low-intent paid acquisition.
- Creators / influencers / social: none. Searching TikTok for "Mistmere" only returns unrelated content like a game character with the same name. X (x-radar, 30 days) has zero mentions. No media coverage, only auto-indexed sites like CNET Download, Softonic and Joybit9.
- Review farming: suspicious, but not strong. Many of the 5-star reviews are meaningless short phrases like "bien", "primera vez", "yanci Rivera 468". The rating histogram piles up at 1★ and 5★ with the middle empty. The volume is small (22 5-star reviews), so the effect on ranking is limited. It looks more like real low-intent users tapping through.
Where the money comes back from: interstitial and rewarded ads (users repeatedly complain "demasiados anuncios", "way too many ads") plus subscriptions/in-app purchases that ask you to pay as soon as you open it ($6.99–$39.99). In low-install-cost storefronts like Mexico and Argentina, it can keep buying as long as ad eCPM and a small share of payers cover CPI. No storefront has it on Top Grossing, which suggests revenue is modest and the ads are doing most of the payback.
4. Competitors
Similar "AI photo effects / photo-to-video / AI avatar" apps are extremely crowded on Play, and most are toolmakers using the same playbook:
| Competitors | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How it differs from Mistmere |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miuci AI (same developer) | Android | 2026-07-19 | 1.46M installs, +138k in 7 days; #3 US Photography | The parent package. Mistmere is its re-skinned second package, adding face shape / hairstyle analysis |
| ATQ - AI Lab matrix (AI Photo Beauty Editor Studio, Emberly, Piclux, Fravix, etc.) | Android | From ¥2026-03 | Single packages 300–9M; AI Photo Beauty Editor +810k in 7 days | Same playbook run at larger scale, with more packages and bigger budgets |
| AI Photo Generator: Muselab(Shotcut Video Workshop) | Android | 2026-04-10 | 5.36M, 7 days +920k | Veteran toolmaker with traffic pools like a video downloader to cross-promote |
| AI Face Aging(Willson Studio) | Android | 2026-02-03 | 7.13M, 7 days +570k | Single-function play (aging) |
| MistyPix / AI Hairstyle Try On(Vit Corp.) | Android | 2026-05/06 | 1.28M / 2.68M | Runs hairstyle try-on as a standalone package; Mistmere folds it into a combined app |
| AI Photo Editor: Art Studio(Leilani Rogers) | Android | 2026-09-09 | 1.83M, 7 days +250k | New packages from the same period, charting the same way |
| Snaptou, VidJoy, LumaSprig, PixGen, FrameBloom, AsterLoop and others | Android | 2026-09~10 | 3–900k, +7–3k in 80 days | New packages crowding in the same month show the category is being copied in bulk |
| PixVerse, Hailuo AI (MiniMax) | Android / iOS / web | 2024–2025 | 79.6M / 27.8M | Genuine products built on in-house models. Higher quality, building a brand |
| Picsart, B612, Hypic (ByteDance), Google Photos' AI features | Android/iOS | Years | Hundreds of millions to tens of billions | Big players have already built AI effects and photo animation in as native features |
5. Differentiation
Almost none. The feature list (90s style, Christmas, Halloween, anime, 3D, photo-to-video, 100+ templates, text-to-image) matches dozens of similar packages, and the models most likely come from public APIs. The only slight difference is "AI face analysis + hairstyle/hair color recommendations," but Vit Corp. and ATQ both have standalone hairstyle try-on packages. What got it running is not differentiation, but: a template already proven (Miuci hit 1.4M installs) + relaunching it as a new package to get new-app platform boosts and chart placement + concentrated paid acquisition in low-cost storefronts.
6. How visible it is
Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no public revenue, no coverage from media or X accounts, no organic TikTok content. It's only been auto-indexed by store aggregator sites. But the "AI photo re-skin" category it sits in is already saturated (see the table above: a dozen-plus similar new packages in one month). Nobody needs to copy it, because everyone is already running the same playbook.
7. Takeaways
- Once a template works, change the name, change the icon, add one small feature, and launch a new package. Use the new package to recapture Play's new-app exposure and category chart placement while the old package keeps harvesting.
- Buy installs first in countries like Mexico, Argentina and Vietnam, where CPI is low and chart thresholds are low, to reach #1, then let chart exposure bring in organic installs.
- Stuff search terms into package names and titles; chase seasonal templates every week (Halloween, Christmas) for ad creatives.
- Risks: a rating of 2.6, and one-star reviews like "the ad falsely says it's free" drag down conversion. Play has delisting risk for duplicate content and re-skinned packages.
8. Uncertain
- Actual paid acquisition channels and budget (Meta has visible signs of spend; Google UAC and TikTok unverified).
- Revenue: not on the Top Grossing chart, ad revenue not visible, whether ROI is positive is unknown; 11-04 dropping off the US chart suddenly could mean paid acquisition was cut (ROI didn't work) or the budget moved to Mexico.
- The developer's nationality (Vietnam) is inferred from email and review language.
- Which package the "download another app" prompt pushes is unverified.
