Mervious: AI Photo & Video Art · CrocoTech

Three empty Facebook pages, a Vietnamese app factory: how Mervious bought 1.93M installs in three and a half months

What it is An Android AI portrait and image-to-video app: upload a selfie, pick a template, and get professional portraits, couple photos, pet photos, and short videos. It makes money from interstitial ads plus subscriptions at $19.99–$39.49.

Why it took off Not word of mouth. It was bought. A Vietnamese app factory used several empty Facebook pages to run waves of ads, pushing daily installs to over a hundred thousand each wave. That pushed it into the photo free charts in India and the Philippines, where the entry bar is low, and then natural traffic from charts and search took over. The same product also has re-skinned twins, Miuci and Mistmere.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another AI portrait template app. Copy the buying method for your own tool app: first work out the weekly install threshold needed to reach the top 15 in a low-price market's category chart, then split Facebook spend into waves to hit that threshold, rotating one-off pages for creatives.

Grade C: the wave-buying method to push into low-barrier category charts is worth learning. But the category is already packed with a dozen accounts from the same network, big-spend buyers at tens of millions of installs, and free big-company features. It has never charted in Top Grossing, and whether it pays back is unclear. A follower copying this is just the thirtieth-plus version of the same app. Few people know about it yet

Mervious is an app on Google Play that lets you upload a selfie and turn it into AI portraits and short videos with templates. It launched in Jul 20, and by Nov 6 had 1.93M installs. Its product is no different from dozens of similar apps, and it has never charted in any Top Grossing list. It works because a Vietnamese app pipeline sits behind it: the same product, under a different name and account, runs a concentrated Facebook ad wave every two or three weeks, pushing it into the photo charts of India and the Philippines, where the bar is low. Below is how this playbook runs and what you can take from it.

Oct 22 video

On Oct 22, a Facebook page called "Mervious" posted a short video with one line of copy: "Top 1 app AI photo to create viral video for you," with a "Download now" button and 1,800 views. The page had no visible followers and no other content. Two more pages, "Mervious: AI Photo & Video Art" (same copy, posted Oct 7) and "Mervious - AI Art" ("Create a viral video with this app"), were also up. All three page IDs fall in the same batch of new accounts, clearly shells created to run ads.

The next day, Oct 23, Mervious's installs jumped in a step. Third-party estimates put the average for those days at about 180k per day, with cumulative installs going from 1.45M to 1.63M. Looking back, the same day the Oct 7 creative went out also had a spike (about 170k installs/day). The creative dates line up with the install pulses, which is the most direct evidence of paid buying.

What it is

The store listing says "100+ AI photo & video viral templates": upload one selfie, pick a template, and get professional photos, ID photos, couple photos, family photos, pet photos, baby photos, Old Money style, football portraits in national team jerseys, and turn photos into short animated videos. This is the standard feature list for this app type. The underlying model provider is not stated.

Money comes in from two sides. The listing says "Contains ads," and in-app purchases run $19.99 to $39.49 (Google Play, 11-06). The prices look like weekly or annual subscriptions. The user flow is clearest in a one-star review that 47 people marked helpful:

"Too many ads. You have to tap 'next' for half an hour, and then they make you subscribe." (Nitesh Kumar, Google Play, 09-28)

Another one-star review marked helpful by 52 people is about results: "Can't make the videos from the ads. What I make looks nothing like the photo I uploaded." (Ryan He, 08-12) The app had only been listed for three weeks and already had people who came in from the ads. Of course, a five-star review with 192 likes says "the results look natural." The store rating is 4.5, from about 9,000 ratings.

The curve is steps, not a slope

Cumulative installs by third-party estimate:

TimelineWhat happened
Week 08-10Only 16k cumulative
Week 08-17First pulse, +136k in one week
09-07 to 09-20Two weeks +447k, peaking at about 156k/day
10-04, 10-07Two pulses, cumulative past 1M
10-23Another, about 180k/day
11-01 to 11-06back down to about 10k a day

By month, August about 230k, September about 570k, October about 1.05M (est.). Each time they push hard, then let it fall back, and come back again two or three weeks later. Word-of-mouth growth is a steepening slope; this stepped shape is what staged budget release looks like.

Why a few hundred thousand yuan a week is enough to chart

It's going after India and the Philippines. The bar for India's Google Play Photo & Video free chart is absurdly low: the #6 photo app in Nov 6 only pulled 166K new installs worldwide over 7 days. Mervious ran one round of paid acquisition that pushed weekly new installs into the hundreds of thousands, which was enough to hold it near the top 15 spots. A third-party chart tracker had it at #7 in India's photo chart in Oct 27, then #13 in Oct 29. With no new round of paid acquisition after that, it slid to #63 by Nov 4. In Nov 6 it was on the photo free charts in 15 countries: #36 in the Philippines, #42 in India, #74 in the US.

Chart position itself brings organic traffic, and store search helps too: the package name is literally imagetovideo, and the title "AI Photo & Video Art" is keywords stacked together. Several Hindi tutorials titled "Mervious ai app kaise use kare" (how to use) then showed up on YouTube in India, some with Telegram download groups attached, but views were tiny, one video got only 11 views in 13 days. These are small channels chasing trending apps for tutorial traffic, a follow-on effect of the hype, not the cause of it.

Beyond that it barely exists online: nothing on TikTok, nobody on X, no media coverage, the only hits are auto-indexed APK download sites.

Who's behind it: one pipeline, several accounts

The store page's "About the developer" lists an individual, VU THI THEM, with an address in Hai Duong, Vietnam. "CrocoTech" is just the display name. The support email is [email protected]; the website aap878-ai-photo-crocco.web.app is an empty Firebase site; the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites. The same account also published Hairisi, an AI hairstyle app, in Aug 8, which has 670k installs.

Searching for the pattern "[email protected] + number.web.app" turns up a whole string of accounts on Play:

CrocoTechaap877 / aap878Hairisi, Mervious (07-20)670k, 1.93M

The closest match is Miuci from Funkedenic: it launched one day before Mervious, with nearly identical package names (com.aiphoto.aivideo.generator.photofilter and com.aiphotovideo.generator.imagetovideo), and sequential website IDs. It's fairly safe to infer (confidence fairly high) that one pipeline is reskinning the same product, changing names and icons, and publishing it across accounts. The division of labor is visible too: Miuci goes after Latin America, Vietnam and the US store, with in-app purchases at $4.99–$17.99; Mervious targets India and the Philippines at a noticeably higher price point. In Oct 16 they added Mistmere, which hit 235k installs in three weeks. Whether the whole string of accounts is one company, or just a shared circle of ASO and ad vendors, there's no direct evidence.

The upside of this setup: if one package gets pulled, or one set of creatives wears out, you switch to the next package and keep spending, and the overall operation is unaffected.

Who it's competing with

Almost everyone. Within six months of launch, Android apps with AI and photo/video in the name that have passed a million installs number more than 30, adding up to over 100M installs (est.).

  • Same-network siblings: Nexus at 12.4M, Framly at 4.71M (still +7k over 520 days), with thousands and hundreds of live Meta ads respectively.
  • Big rival accounts using the same playbook: Vidix at 30.2M, Refoto at 24.6M, long-running near the top of India's Photography chart.
  • Contemporary template apps that crowded the top 15 of India's Photography chart alongside it, with nearly identical features: AI Art Magic, Artify AI, Lumpix, Shots, each at 1.34M to 3.85M.
  • Model companies' own apps: PixVerse, Hailuo, Kling, with their own models, free-form prompts, and Top Grossing placements.
  • Big tech: Remini, Picsart, Hypic, Canva already have AI portraits and animated photos, and Google Photos and Gemini give them away free.

Mervious sits mid-pack in this crowd. It didn't take users from anyone; it just rotated onstage with a crowd of look-alike apps on a low-bar chart.

Is it making money?

No idea. It has never charted in any country's Top Grossing, and we can't see its ad revenue. What we can work out is the monetization design: free users first get a long run of interstitial ads, the ad income covers part of the acquisition cost up front, then a paywall pops up at $20–$40. The price shows up in the reviews: "too many ads", "not what the ad showed". There's also a strange pattern: its 2 star rating has stayed at 0,3 stars, but in Nov 4 it dropped from 53 ratings to 0,1 and has been bouncing between 690 and 564 stars since. Its twin app Miuci also saw its low-star reviews suddenly shrink. Did Google purge a batch of ratings, or is there manipulation in the ratings themselves? Unverified.

If it were you

The verdict: don't copy "yet another AI portrait template app". The category is already packed with a dozen accounts from the same network, million-install paid-acquisition giants, and free features from big tech. What you can take away is its spending rhythm and its method for picking markets.

Who it fits: a small team that already has a deliverable utility app, a Facebook ad budget that can be spent in several rounds, and willingness to start in low-cost markets like India and Southeast Asia.

Who it doesn't fit: indie devs with no paid acquisition budget who want to grow through organic traffic and social media. Mervious has zero content on TikTok and X; all its volume was bought. Also not for anyone unwilling to run several developer accounts at once or accept "too many ads" complaints.

How to do it: copy three things. One, first find out the weekly new-install threshold for the top 15 of a category's free chart in your target country (India Photography is around a few hundred thousand), size each round's budget to that threshold, and don't spend if it can't push you into the top spots. Two, release spend in waves: concentrate a few days to push daily installs above the threshold, then after the chart brings organic traffic, spend the next round, instead of spreading it evenly every day. Three, rotate creatives through disposable storefront pages, write copy that says "Top 1" or "viral", and swap pages and creatives when they wear out.

How to acquire users: Facebook app install ads, only in low-cost markets; on launch, fill the package name and title with search keywords, and ride store search after the chart push.

When to move: this playbook has no deadline, but this category's slot in India is already full, and entering now means being the thirty-something-th app in line.

Signs you've misread it: ① Mervious or Miuci shows up on the Top Grossing chart in India or the Philippines, meaning "ads + high-priced subscriptions" can really pay back and a template app is still worth building; ② the next spend round stops, installs plateau near 2M, and new same-network packages stop gaining traction, meaning buying traffic is no longer worth it and copying this rhythm needs caution; ③ Google Play takes down a whole batch of accounts with the same ID pattern at once, meaning the multi-account approach has stopped working.

Where users come from
  • Verified Facebook / Meta app install ads: at least 3 Mervious shell Pages (ids 61590623700402, 61593442674095, 61590683916560) run short videos with a Download now / Try here button, copy reads "Top 1 app AI photo to create viral video"; the start dates of creatives 10-07 and 10-22 line up with two install spikes on 10-07 and 10-23; a user review says "can't make the video shown in the ad". None of our three ad libraries tracked it, so count and spend are unknown.
  • Verified Developer matrix / studio pipeline: a network sharing the aso.<name>@gmail.com email pattern and project-number web.app sites: DQL, NXL, Astronex, ATQ, Funkedenic, CrocoTech; Miuci (aap875) and Mervious (aap878) launched one day apart with nearly identical package names; the developer is an individual, VU THI THEM, in Hai Duong, Vietnam (per the Play store page).
  • Inferred category chart + store search ASO: the package name imagetovideo and the titles are keyword stacks; to break into the top 15 of the India Photo & Video free chart, you need roughly 170k–240k new installs over 7 days, and once you're in, organic traffic follows (googleplay library v_chart)
  • Verified India YouTube tutorials / Telegram: several Hindi "Mervious ai app kaise use kare" videos, with Telegram download groups attached; views are very small, more likely a follow-on effect of the hype.
  • Inferred TikTok / X / media: a TikHub search for mervious returned zero results, x-radar shows zero mentions in 60 days, and there's no media coverage.

Why Mervious: AI Photo & Video Art (CrocoTech) was able to take off

Data card: play_com.aiphotovideo.generator.imagetovideo; research date 2026-11-06.

Bottom line

Mervious is one of dozens of "AI portrait / image-to-video / viral template" wrapper apps on Google Play, with no product differentiation. It gained traction because it sits in a network of Vietnamese app factories: multiple developer accounts publish in bulk through the same pipeline and build sites by project number. The factory used several rounds of Facebook ad spend, and the first round pushed it into India's Photography Top Free top ten; afterward it rode organic traffic from category charts in India, the Philippines and the US. Monetization relies on "watch a pile of ads first, then a $19.99–$39.49 paywall". Funkedenic, a account in the same network, has already launched nearly identical Miuci AI and Mistmere.

1. Data (googleplay library)

  • Installs: 1,929,018 lifetime worldwide, +190,946 over the last 7 days (app_profile, 11-06). 07-20 listed, about 3.5 months.
  • Install curve (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates; single-day values are averages between two observations, so read the shape only):
    • The week of 08-10 it had only 16k cumulative; the week of 08-17 it added +136k (about 81k/day on average). This was the first spike.
    • From 09-07 to 09-20, two weeks, +447k (about 09-16 averages 156k/day).
    • Two spikes, on 10-04 and 10-07 (averaging 142k and 173k/day), pushed cumulative past 1M.
    • One spike on 10-23 (averaging about 181k/day) took cumulative from 1.45M to 1.63M.
    • Our own pulls: 10-29 to 11-06:10-31 +124k (two days combined), 11-03 +48k, and after that about 0.9–10k a day (app_day).
    • Monthly totals: August about 228k, September about 571k, October about 1.05M, first 6 days of November about 66k.
    • The curve is staircase-shaped: a spike, a fall-off, then another push two or three weeks later. That's the classic shape of budgets released in batches, not the smooth compounding of word of mouth.
  • Charts (chart_rank, from 10-29):
    • Photo & Video Top Free in India: 10-29 #13, then slid steadily to #63 by 11-04, and back to #42 on 11-06. A search snippet from Sensor Tower's public page shows it at #7 on the India photo chart on 10-27 (Jina search summary; the original page needs login and was not opened directly).
    • US Photo & Video Top Free: 108 → 61 (11-02/03) → 74; Philippines 54 → 36; best in Italy was #62.
    • Today it's on the Photo & Video Top Free chart in 15 countries. It has never charted on any Top Grossing list.
  • Ratings: 8,955 total, averaging 4.58, with rating count about 0.46% of installs. Adds 60–90 ratings a day. Only 15 have written reviews (written_reviews in app_snap). The star distribution is odd: the 2-star count stayed at 0,3 until 11-04, then went from 53 to 0,1, and the 690- and 564-star counts keep swapping places (histogram in app_snap). Miuci, on the same network, also saw 1 and 2-star counts drop suddenly. The cause is unknown. Google may have purged a batch of reviews, or the ratings may be manipulated. Not verified.
  • Monetization: ad-supported (ad_supported = True), in-app purchases $19.99–$39.49 each (app_snap). That price range is far above Miuci's on the same network ($4.99–$17.99), which suggests weekly or annual subscriptions.
  • The most-liked reviews on the store page show what the product feels like:
    • "Too many ads, I tapped 'next' for half an hour, and in the end it wants a subscription" (Nitesh Kumar, 09-28,47 people found this helpful);
    • "Can't make the video from the ads, what it makes looks nothing like the photo I uploaded" (Ryan He, 08-12,52 people found this helpful);
    • There's also a positive review with 192 upvotes: "the results look natural" (08-24). (Play store page, Jina scrape)

2. Developer: a Vietnamese app factory network

  • The "About the developer" section lists an individual name, VU THI THEM, email [email protected], address Hong Khe, Binh Giang, Hai Duong, Vietnam (Play store page). CrocoTech is just the display name; it's a Vietnamese individual developer account.
  • Contact email [email protected]. The website is an empty Firebase site, aap878-ai-photo-crocco.web.app, and the privacy policy sits on Google Sites.
  • The same account also has Hairisi: AI Hairstyle Try on (listed 08-08, 674k installs, +57k over 7 days), website aap877-ai-hair.web.app (googleplay library app).
  • Searching the library for the signature "aso.<name>@gmail.com email + project-number.web.app website" turns up a whole network (googleplay library app/app_profile, 11-06):

Funkedenic's Miuci was listed one day before Mervious, with nearly identical package names (com.aiphoto.aivideo.generator.photofilter vs com.aiphotovideo.generator.imagetovideo) and consecutive website IDs (aap875 / aap877 / aap878). It's a strong inference that these two accounts are the same publisher or the same pipeline: one product, different names and icons, uploaded under different accounts. Whether the whole network is one company or a circle sharing an ASO or ad vendor is unverified.

3. Where users come from

  1. Facebook ads (direct evidence, number of ads unknown): Facebook has at least 3 Pages named after Mervious, all posting short videos with "Download now / Try here" call-to-action buttons, the format of app install creatives (Jina search and scrape):
    • "Mervious" (id 61590623700402): 10-22 posted "Top 1 app AI photo to create viral video for you", 1.8K views;
    • "Mervious: AI Photo & Video Art" (id 61593442674095): 10-07 posted the same copy;
    • "Mervious - AI Art" (id 61590683916560): "Create a viral video with this app". These Page IDs all come from a new number range, with no visible followers or organic content. They are ad shells. The creative posting dates line up with the install spikes: 10-07 creative against the 10-07 spike (averaging 173k/day), and 10-22 creative against the 10-23 spike (averaging 181k/day). Our Meta Ad Library (we only found advertisers in keyword top results for US/GB/DE/JP), Google Ads Transparency and TikTok Ad Library did not track it, so the number of ads and the spend are unknown.
  2. Reviews corroborate ads: "no options to make videos seen in ads" (Play store review, 08-12). Someone came in from an ad within three weeks of listing.
  3. Organic traffic from charting and search after the push:
    • The India Photo & Video Top Free chart has a low bar. On 11-06, #6 Artify AI added only 7k worldwide over its 166 days, and #13 Lumpix added 237k (v_chart). Mervious adding over 100k a week was enough to hold a spot in the top 15.
    • The package name imagetovideo and the title "AI Photo & Video Art" are keyword stuffing, and the email username even includes "aso".
  4. Copycat tutorials in India (a result, not a cause): YouTube has several Hindi "how to use Mervious ai app (kaise use kare)" videos (channels @webmindofficial, @atishapp, etc.), one with a Telegram download group t.me/Tusharapp1. These small channels chase whatever trending app is hot, with tiny view counts (one had only 11 views after 13 days, per the Jina search summary). They confirm the app was visible in India, but not that it was a major acquisition channel.
  5. No other spread: X (x-radar, 60 days) shows zero mentions; a TikTok search for "mervious" returns nothing (TikHub); no media coverage. Searchable mentions are limited to automatic listings on APK sites like Softonic, Uptodown, APKPure and AppBrain.

4. Competitors

There are a great many Android apps doing the same thing (turning selfies into AI portraits with templates, or turning photos into short videos). Miuci's report from the same network counted 32 apps listed within 180 days, with names containing AI and photo/video/image, that have passed a million installs, totaling 125M installs. The main groups are below (googleplay library, 11-06):

Google Photos, GeminiBig-company features—Google Photos India photography #7–10Free built-in image generation and photo animation

Verdict: crowded market, and many of the competitors are "siblings" from the same network. Mervious ranks mid-pack by scale.

5. Differentiation

On the product level there's no visible differentiation: the feature list (portraits, ID photos, couple/family/pet photos, Old Money style, football themes, image-to-video) is standard for this type of app, the underlying model isn't disclosed, and reviews complain "the results don't match the ads." Compared with similar apps, only three things actually differ:

  • it targets India and the Philippines first;
  • its creatives push "Top 1 app for viral videos";
  • its paywall is priced higher ($19.99–$39.49, while its twin Miuci is $4.99–$17.99).

So it's getting traction not because of differentiation but because of the factory network's ad-buying cadence, plus organic traffic from the low-barrier category charts.

VI. Visibility

Few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public, it hasn't charted on any top grossing list, X, TikTok and media don't discuss it, and only small Indian YouTube channels with tutorials and APK sites index it. But the idea itself is a crowded red ocean, and people are already copying it: the same network has shipped Mistmere, a reskinned new app.

7. What's worth borrowing

  • Matrix publishing: multiple individual developer accounts publish the same product (Mervious / Miuci / Mistmere), with empty Firebase sites named "project-number-appname.web.app" and privacy policies hosted on Google Sites. If one app gets pulled or creatives fatigue, the overall impact is small.
  • Wave-based ad buying: a concentrated push every two to three weeks, each one driving daily installs above 150k to hit the top of category charts in low-barrier markets (India, the Philippines), then the next wave once it fades.
  • Disposable ad pages: one product runs several Facebook Pages posting short videos with FOMO copy like "Top 1 app / viral video."
  • Monetization funnel: heavy interstitial ads first, so free users also cover some cost, then high-priced subscriptions. The cost is one-star reviews complaining about "too many ads" and "doesn't match the ads."

8. What's still uncertain

  • How many ad creatives ran, how much was spent, how spend was split across countries, and whether Google UAC was also used: none of the three ad libraries tracked it.
  • Whether it pays back: no top grossing rank, and ad revenue isn't visible.
  • Whether this network is one company or a circle of shared ASO / ad-buying vendors: developer site numbers are sequential and email formats match, but there's no direct evidence.
  • Why the rating distribution is abnormal (2-star at 0 and 3-star suddenly zeroed).
  • Whether the Indian YouTube tutorials are organic or paid for by the studio.
