A PDF viewer you can only "look" with, 810k installs in two months: ApolloPDF wins on tactics, the product itself anyone can build

What it is An Android viewer that only opens PDF, Word, Excel, and PPT files. Free, full of ads, no in-app purchases.

Why it took off Android's built-in preview can't open Office files, and older users need something that opens them with one tap. The team bought installs on low-barrier tool charts in Spain and Mexico, pushing it into the top 10, with budget switched on and off based on payback.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another PDF viewer to crowd into Spanish-speaking markets. Teams that know paid acquisition can learn its method of choosing markets: find a language where PDF apps are still thin on tool charts, work out the daily installs and CPI needed to chart, then invest.

C grade: the product has no barrier, and the tactics are public. In the second half of 2026, 500 similar apps with 59k+ installs appeared, and 10 of the top 5 tool apps in Spain are PDF viewers. There's no data on whether ad revenue turns positive, and grey accounts carry ban risk. Learning the tactics is useful; copying the play isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

ApolloPDF is an ordinary document viewer on Google Play. It opens PDF, Word, Excel, and PPT, includes ads, and has no in-app purchases. Launched in Aug 2026 31, it reached 6k cumulative installs by Nov 815, added 7k in the last 279 days, and ranks #7 in Spain's free Tools chart. It works not because of the product but because of a playbook common in South Asian tool-app circles: pick a low-barrier tool-chart market, switch budget on and off based on payback, and when one package fails, swap packages and accounts and relaunch. The playbook can be learned, but this category is already very crowded.

A review praising Gemini

On ApolloPDF's Spanish store page, the most "helpful" review was written in Oct 13 by a user named Pacho García, with 1,609 people marking it helpful: "Google's apps and all the systems are great, especially the updated Gemini, I love it, it feels like chatting with someone who understands you." The whole review never mentions PDFs.

The second review was a one-star from Oct 6: "Terrible, suddenly so many apps and so many notifications, and two of the apps copy each other." The third was from Oct 2: "This phone keeps lagging, and it keeps popping up ads I didn't ask for, I guess I need a new phone." (Google Play Spain, 11-06)

The new reviews in the Spanish store in late October were much the same, mostly one-liners: "excelente", "muy buena", "duermo tranquilo" (I sleep peacefully). Some asked "are these stones worth anything?

So you can see who its users are: mostly older, less tech-savvy people, many of whom don't really know what they installed. Only traffic pushed by ads looks like this; word-of-mouth users don't.

What it is and who made it

Few features: open PDF / Word / Excel / PPT, plus bookmark, share, rename, and delete. No scanning, editing, or conversion. The store description is restrained, repeatedly stressing that "everything is done locally, no internet." It fills an ongoing gap: Android's built-in preview only shows PDFs, so a Word or Excel file received on WhatsApp just won't open.

The developer is listed as AFFINITAL HOMES, LLC, with an address on the store page in St. Cloud, Florida, USA, but the phone number starts with +880, a Bangladeshi number. The contact email is a Gmail address, and the "website" mst1happy2.com is a domain registered to match the email prefix, with the privacy policy hosted on Google Sites. An account that sounds like a real-estate company selling a PDF viewer is most likely a purchased or rented US developer account (inferred). Under this account there is only this app and a notepad app.

In the same circle there is a nearly identical app, AuraPDF, under an account from Dhaka called ULA LIMITED. Both packages use names like com.<brand>pdf.aa, both host privacy pages on Google Sites, both use Gmail contacts, and both target Spain and Mexico. AuraPDF launched in May and now has 1.17M installs and ranks #3 on Spain's tool chart. No shared email or domain links the two accounts, so whether they're the same team can't be confirmed, but they were clearly built from the same template. ApolloPDF looks more like a copy of AuraPDF.

One more detail: the old package com.apollo.pdf was listed once with the same name and description and got only about 950 installs before disappearing. It only took off after relisting as com.apollopdf.aa (per the AppBrain listing page; the delisting and relisting history is unverified).

How the traffic came in: the curve turns on and off

10-30 ~ 11-03About 44K per day on average
11-05 / 11-06About 14k

It falls almost to zero when paused and jumps to tens of thousands in a day when on. Organic traffic from word of mouth and search wouldn't have this shape; this is the shape of ad budget switched on and off based on payback (inferred). Which channel and creatives were used isn't visible from outside. Being Google Play only, with this user profile, the most likely source is Google App Campaigns or incentive/misleading traffic through ad networks (inferred). Nobody on X, TikTok, or Reddit talks about it; the only mentions online are on APK sites and auto-generated data-site pages.

Where the money goes is pretty clear. 11-06 It charts in only 5 countries: Tools Top Free in Spain #7, Mexico #9, Argentina #17, Brazil #56, and Japan #140. On the Spain overall chart (Google Play), it climbed from #98 on 10-29 to #35 on 11-04. The Spanish-speaking tools charts have a low bar: 10,000 to 40,000 installs a day is enough to land in the top 50 of the Spain overall chart. Once it charts, shoppers browsing the store bring in a second wave of organic installs, which spreads out the paid acquisition cost.

The ratings look fishy too. It's adding 280 to 430 new ratings a day, and the ratings-to-installs ratio is about 1.1%, several times that of comparable paid-acquisition apps (Vietnam's All Docs sits around 0.13%). Of the 8,913 ratings, only 42 come with written reviews, and on several days the star breakdown shows two tiers with exactly the same count. Most likely an in-app prompt is nudging users to rate (inference, mechanism not verified). Also, across all ratings the average works out to 4.59 stars, while the Spanish store page shows 11-06 stars at 4.4.

Where the money comes from

Only ads. It has no in-app purchases and no grossing ranking. Each time a user taps a file from WhatsApp or email, they may be routed here, and each open adds an ad impression. One review says "muchas publicidad pero eficientes" (lots of ads, but effective). No public data shows how much the ads earn or whether acquisition pays back. The Spanish-speaking market has many older users, and a single install is cheaper than in the US, but ad rates in Latin America are also low, so the remaining profit can't be estimated.

How crowded this niche is: 2026 launched after June, names containing PDF / Document / Office, with over 500k installs on Google Play: 59 of them, 85.2M installs combined, and 6.87M new installs in the last 7 days combined. ApolloPDF added 279k in 7 days, ranking around #8 in this group. Not a top player. 11-06 In the Spain tools Top Free chart, the top 10 include 5 PDF viewers, and most of the rest are cleaner apps.

Almost nobody knows this product, but everyone in this playbook circle does.

If it were you

The verdict: building another PDF viewer and buying installs to push it isn't worth it. Anyone can build the product, the tactics aren't secret, and four or five similar apps already crowd the Spanish Tools chart, with the ban risk entirely on you. What's worth learning is how it picks markets and controls budget.

Who it suits: small teams that have already run paid acquisition for tool apps on Google Play, can calculate CPI and ad payback, and have a few clean developer accounts. Such a team could move this template to a tool chart in a language that's still empty and test it.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers who've never run ads. These apps have no organic source, so without spending money there are no installs. Those hoping to differentiate through features should also stay away, since users don't care about features and many don't even know what they installed. Those unwilling to touch grey accounts are also a bad fit: listing under unrelated company accounts, relaunching under new packages, and prompting ratings each cross Google Play policy lines.

How to do it: keep the document viewer light and fast so it ranks in the "open with" menu; write the store page like ApolloPDF does, with a short brand name, a few clear feature lines, and an emphasis on "no internet, no uploads," which looks more legitimate than a screen full of keywords. Choosing the market is the most important step: first find out how many daily installs are needed to reach the top 50 of the target country's tool chart, then run the numbers with local CPI, and invest only if the math works. The Spanish-speaking market already has four or five players fighting for it (AuraPDF, ApolloPDF, Agile PDF, Lector PDF), so switch to a language where PDF apps are still few on the charts.

How to get users: Google App Campaigns, in only one or two countries. Start with a small budget to chart, then see how much organic traffic from charting makes back; watch payback daily, stop if it doesn't add up, scale if it does, the same way the three pauses in its curve show.

When to move before: this kind of opportunity doesn't follow seasons; what matters is whether there's still an empty language slot. Right now the Spanish slot is packed, and Polish and Italian are also being worked. To try it, finish one round of testing before Q1 2027.

What would show you read it wrong: ① ApolloPDF and AuraPDF are still firmly in Spain's top 10 tool chart after December, each with over 2M cumulative installs, which would show the Spanish-speaking market has more room than it looks and late entrants still get a share; ② a similar team publicly discloses revenue and ad payback is clearly positive; ③ a newly listed similar app switches to another language (like Turkish or Indonesian), copies this playbook, and within a month breaks into the top 10 of that country's tool chart and holds, which would show many empty language slots remain. Conversely, if Google Play takes down this batch of .aa packages in bulk and bans the accounts, that would mean even learning the tactics needs caution.

Where users come from
  • Inferred Paid acquisition (likely Google App Campaigns or ad-network incentive/misleading creatives): the install curve stopped to near zero three times and surged back; charted only in a few Spanish-speaking countries; reviews from users who installed the wrong app (asking if stones are worth money), afraid of damaging their phone, "doesn't solve the problem"; AppInsider models 15% paid (model value)
  • Confirmed Low-barrier Spanish-language utility charts, earning organic chart traffic: #7 in Spain's TOOLS, #9 in Mexico, #17 in Argentina; Spain overall climbed from #98 at 10-29 to #35 at 11-04 (chart_rank, AppInsider)

Why ApolloPDF (com.apollopdf.aa) managed to climb

In short: ApolloPDF is a templated PDF/Office viewer from a Bangladeshi team, published under a US LLC developer account. It uses the same playbook as AuraPDF (ULA LTD, Dhaka) from the same circle: package name com.<brand>pdf.aa, Google Sites privacy page, Gmail contact, single-word brand name. It pushes into Spain, Mexico and Argentina, where the utility charts have low entry barriers, using paid acquisition that gets switched on and off by budget, and monetizes through ads. The product itself has no real differentiation. The edge is the playbook: pick markets, toggle spend, rotate accounts.

1. Basic data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; earlier curve estimated by AppstoreSpy)

  • Developer: AFFINITAL HOMES, LLC. The store page address is 3922 Cedar Hammock Trl, Saint Cloud, FL (USA), phone is +880 1750-165206 (Bangladeshi number), email [email protected], "website" mst1happy2.com is a domain named after the email prefix, and the privacy policy is hosted at sites.google.com/view/apollow. The company name sounds like a real estate firm and has nothing to do with PDFs, so it's likely a purchased or rented US developer account (inferred). The same account has one other app, Daily Draft (com.daily.draft). (Play store page, read via r.jina.ai, 11-06)
  • Launched 2026-08-31, TOOLS category. Free, contains ads, no in-app purchases (app_snap: offers_iap=False, ad_supported=True). Version 1.0.2(10-28) → 1.0.3(11-02); the store page shows one more update at 11-05.
  • Cumulative installs 815,095 (11-06), +278,837 in 7 days; 8,913 ratings, 4.59 stars, only 42 reviews with text.
  • Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimate, app_day_ext): 9-18 about 9,700 → 10-01 about 54k → 10-03/04 daily gain 14k, 38k → 10-05~07 daily gain drops to 35, 792, 20 → 10-08 one day +94k → 10-10/11 drops again to daily gain 63 → 10-12~27 daily gain 0.8~50k → 10-28/29 drops again to daily gain 38 → 10-30~11-03 daily average about 44k → 11-04 about 31k → 11-05/06 about 14k. This is a classic on-off-on step pattern. The gains on the paused days are almost zero, the shape of budget toggling, not of word of mouth or organic search.
  • Charts (chart_rank, 11-06): TOOLS free chart: Spain #7, Mexico #9, Argentina #17, Brazil #56, Japan #140; overall App chart: Spain #46, Mexico #144, Argentina #180. Spain's overall rank climbed from #98 at 10-29 to #35 at 11-04 (AppInsider's best Spain overall rank was #38 at 11-04). Charted in only 5 countries, Spanish-speaking markets make up almost all of it.
  • Ratings: 280~430 new ratings per day, rating-to-install ratio about 1.1%, several times that of similar paid-acquisition apps (Vietnam's All Docs is 0.13%). The rating distribution repeatedly shows two levels with identical counts (11-01:2 stars = 3 stars = 265; 11-05:2 stars = 3 stars = 348; 11-06:1 stars = 2 stars = 253), most likely an in-app prompt nudging ratings (mechanism unverified).
  • Review content (review library, Spanish store, 10-29~31) is almost all one-liners: "excelente", "muy buena", "duermo tranquilo". Some reveal where users came from: "quiero saber si estás piedras tienen valor" (wants to know if these stones are worth anything, installed the wrong app), "Estoy experimentando, ojalá que no me dañe mi Celular" (hoping it won't damage my phone), "no Soluciona el Problema" (doesn't solve the problem), "porque entran muchas apps de limpieza al mismo tiempo?" (why do so many cleaner apps show up at once?), "muchas publicidad pero eficientes" (lots of ads but efficient). The most "helpful" reviews on the US store page are "give god the glory" and "More faster network and active try it". Most users are middle-aged or older people not very familiar with phones, many unaware of what they installed, the typical profile for incentive / misleading ad traffic.

  • The two accounts share no email or domain, so we can't confirm they're the same team. But the package name format, the privacy-page hosting, the brand naming, the target markets (Spain + Mexico) and the Bangladeshi background all match, so at minimum they're the same template / the same circle.
  • Recall also turned up: the old package com.apollo.pdf ran once under the same name and description (AppBrain listing title "ApolloPDF - Free Android App Stats", description word-for-word identical). Per recalled data it got only about 950 installs before it disappeared. It was relaunched as com.apollopdf.aa and only then picked up traction. Details of the old package's listing and delisting are not in our library and are unverified.
  • Around the same time, a batch of "word + PDF" named PDF viewers, also using Google Sites privacy pages and Gmail: AdoPDF (sirbodev, 05-12.7M, Japan TOOLS #3), PicoPDF (Rufayda LLC, 115k), FixPDF, ArrowPDF (account under a Turkish textile company name, backed by an email with a Pakistani name), and Luminix PDF (ARRA PACKS LLP). Publishing template PDF viewers under unrelated company accounts is standard practice in the South Asian tool-app scene.

5. Why it charted

  1. Real need + system gap: Android users get Word, Excel, PPT files over WhatsApp or email, while the built-in viewer only handles PDFs. The gap has persisted for years, and older users especially need something that opens files with one tap.
  2. Picked the right market: the tool charts in Spain, Mexico and Argentina have low entry barriers; tens of thousands of daily installs can get you into the top 50 of the Spain overall chart, and once charted you pick up organic traffic from browsing. The Spanish-speaking region has a large older user base and cheaper CPI than the US, and AuraPDF has already shown this path works.
  3. Switch-style ad spend: the three pauses on the curve suggest budget is turned on and off based on payback, cut when the numbers don't work, scaled up when they do.
  4. Pure ad monetization, matching "open repeatedly": no in-app purchases, so every file open is an ad impression; reviews like "muchas publicidad" show the ad density isn't low.
  5. Account matrix and package rotation spread the risk: one brand, one package; when it fails, they re-upload under a new package (com.apollo.pdf → com.apollopdf.aa), and the same template runs separately under different accounts.
  6. Rating prompts push the score to 4.6, so negative reviews probably aren't dragging down store page conversion (inferred).

6. Differentiation

  • No product differentiation: the features are only view, favorite, share, rename, delete, fewer than most competitors (no scanning, editing, or conversion).
  • Three things set it apart a little, but none of them is the main reason it works: ① the title avoids keyword stuffing and uses a short brand name like "ApolloPDF", with a restrained description that stresses "all local, no internet", which looks more legitimate than competitors stuffed with keywords; ② few features and a small package, so it opens fast on low-end phones; ③ it focuses on the Spanish market, while the Vietnamese and Indian teams mainly target India, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe.
  • What really made it work is the playbook (market selection + switch-style spend + package rotation / multiple accounts + rating prompts). This playbook is shared widely in the community; it's not unique to this app.

7. How many people know about it

  • Revenue is not public: no TrustMRR listing, no founder posts; nobody discusses it on X, TikTok or Reddit; it only has auto-generated pages on data sites like AppInsider and AppRankSpy.
  • But "template PDF viewer + paid acquisition" is already a crowded category (the 59 new entries from the past 2026 years above). Nobody knows this product, but everyone knows its playbook.
  • Copycats: AuraPDF, same template, launched earlier (it looks more like a follower of AuraPDF); plus a group of "one word + PDF" lookalikes (AdoPDF, PicoPDF, ArrowPDF, FixPDF, Luminix PDF).

8. What others can learn

  • First look for a market where the tool charts in one language region have low entry barriers, work out how many daily installs and what CPI it takes to chart, then decide whether to spend. The Spanish-speaking region (Spain plus Latin America) is an area the Vietnamese and Indian teams haven't flooded yet.
  • Let the curve decide budget; don't burn money all at once.
  • For an older-user store page: a short brand name, a few clear feature lines, and an emphasis on "no internet, no upload" look more like a legitimate app than keyword stuffing.
  • Risks: using a corporate account unrelated to the core business, re-uploading under new packages, and prompting for ratings all cross Google Play policy lines; the account could be banned at any time.

9. Still unclear

  • Which channel they spend on (Google UAC, Meta, or incentivized traffic from ad networks) and what creatives they use: our ad library doesn't track it, and the Google Ads Transparency Center had no direct record.
  • Whether ApolloPDF and AuraPDF are the same team; how the old package com.apollo.pdf was taken down.
  • How much ad revenue it earns and whether ROI turns positive: no data; AppInsider only says it works with 3 ad networks.
  • Whether the equal-bucket rating distribution comes from the in-app prompt, or is an artifact of our scraping.
