39k installs, #50 on Indonesia's Top Grossing: an AI short-drama side account, and the crowded chart behind it

What it is A vertical short-drama app with an AI-generated library. The first few episodes are free, and later ones unlock with coin packs or a weekly pass priced at $9.99–$19.99.

Why it took off Users in Indonesia and Southeast Asia have already been trained by big players like DramaBox and ReelShort to pay for the next episode, and the bottom of the Top Grossing chart is an easy target. It keeps content costs down with an AI library and runs small paid acquisition campaigns in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brazil. A few tens of thousands of installs was enough to make the chart.

CHow you could play it Don't build yet another AI short-drama app. Borrow its two moves: an AI library to cut costs, and use chart positions in cheap markets to validate paying users first. Then make the playback and payment experience it got wrong solid, and do one language and one genre only.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and worth learning, but AI short dramas already have dozens of copycats and big players with hundreds of millions of installs. It has no differentiation of its own and a rating of 1.8. Following it means competing on library size and ad budget, which small teams don't win. Few people know about it yet

In Oct 30, a user named Peter Mudford left a review on Google Play for DravellaDrama: "Half the videos won't play, and it's laggy. I subscribed for a week and paid for this." The app launched on Aug 20 and had 39,296 installs by Nov 6, yet already ranked #50 on Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing chart. It's listed under a US kidney-disease AI company and its library is AI-generated short dramas. This piece covers how it reached the chart, where the money comes from, and why this chart isn't as easy to get into as it looks.

"I subscribed for a week"

The three reviews visible at the top of the store page (Google Play, 11-06) are all from people who paid and were unhappy:

  • Derrick M. Anderson Sr., Oct 18: "I bought this app, watched two episodes, closed it and reopened it, and nothing loads. My connection is fine, it's not the network."
  • vinoth Loganathan, same day: "It's okay, but I could only use this app for one day."
  • Peter Mudford, Oct 30, the one from the opening. He added: "This app needs a major update to work with Samsung's latest One UI 9.0."

Two of the three explicitly say they paid. The ratings are ugly: as of Nov 6 there were 59 ratings with an average of 1.8, 1 of them 35-star (Google Play install and rating data, 11-06; the Indonesia store page shows 3.4, since Play displays ratings by region, so the bases differ). But for an app that lives on a paywall, "people are cursing that they paid" is itself proof that people are paying.

What it is

A vertical short-drama app. The store description has one selling line: "AI-crafted stories", meaning the dramas are AI-made. The features are standard for the category: vertical scrolling, categories, search, progress tracking, favorites and watch history. Nothing here that rivals don't have.

The monetization is standard too: the first few episodes are free, then coin packs or a weekly pass unlock the rest, priced at $9.99 to $19.99 each (Google Play in-app purchase prices). Peter Mudford's "subscribed for a week" was the weekly pass.

  • Installs: 10-29 was 16,200,11-06, and 39,296, then 23k in a week, averaging two to three thousand a day (Google Play install counts update in steps, so the curve climbs in jumps).
  • Charts: Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing went from #10-29 on 111, climbing to #11-05 and #11-06 on 50. From 11-03 it also charted on Indonesia's overall Top Grossing, at #146 to #189. Malaysia Entertainment Top Grossing ranked #84–108, the Philippines #107–124, Brazil #122–149.
  • The Top Free charts are much worse: Indonesia's Entertainment Top Free topped out at #122. Top Grossing is far better than Top Free, which means a fair share of the people coming in are paying.

Why 39k installs can get you on the chart

Look at the top 50 of Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing and it's clear: DramaBox, ReelShort, NetShort, Melolo, DramaWave, GoodShort, FlickReels, VibeShort... short-drama apps take roughly half the spots (Google Play Indonesia Entertainment Top Grossing, 11-06). These big players spent two years and hundreds of millions of installs training users in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to pay for the next episode.

The result: the chart's entry bar is held up by short-drama payment habits, but the bottom isn't high. A few tens of thousands of installs and a handful of people buying a weekly pass can land you in the top 50. Right above it at #49 is My Muse, an AI short-drama app with 1.38M installs. DravellaDrama sits one spot below it with about 3% of its install count.

So "#50 on Indonesia's Top Grossing" tells you that short dramas in this market have paying users, and that the chart is cheap to get onto. It doesn't tell you the app earns much. Its actual revenue isn't public, and no third party has estimated it.

Where users come from

Probably paid acquisition, but the ads themselves weren't captured. Its privacy policy says it uses AppsFlyer, which collects "install source, attribution status, and ad campaign information". Installing an attribution SDK in the app is standard practice for buying traffic by channel and calculating payback. Several indirect signs point the same way: it only charted in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brazil, four countries where paid traffic is cheap; installs run steadily at two to three thousand a day, like spend released against a fixed budget; and the weak Top Free versus strong Top Grossing rankings look like targeting of people who pay. Whether it ran Facebook, TikTok or Google ads, and how much, is unverified.

Its own TikTok account serializes a series, but with small numbers. The account is @dramavella, display name Drama Villa, bio "AI Drama Stories Daily". Since Sep 2 it has posted one episode a day of a single AI short drama, "Hired As A Mafia Wife, My Life With The Don" (hired as a mafia boss's wife), and as of Nov 5 it was up to episode 39. The account has 1,114 followers; views on the last ten episodes range from a few hundred to 16k, with the peak at episode 30 on Oct 27 at 16,176 views (TikTok, 11-06). Mafia and contract-marriage plots are what works best in overseas short dramas. But those views can't support 23k installs a week, so it's a supporting channel at most.

The name may pick up some accidental searches. The store already has similarly named apps like DramaVela, Dramavale and VelaFlix, so some people will search for the wrong one and land here. How many is unknown (inference).

Who runs it: a borrowed US account

The developer name on Play is "Nephrolytics, Inc." This is a real US startup doing clinical AI for kidney disease that has raised $2.5M. The address in the privacy policy is 4511 Zebe Ave, Chubbuck, Idaho, which checks out as the clinic address of the Idaho Kidney Research Institute. But the privacy policy page sits under a domain called clickai999.com, and the contact email is a personal Gmail: [email protected].

A kidney-disease AI company wouldn't make a paid short-drama app. The most likely case: a small overseas team, probably with Chinese-language or Hong Kong roots, bought or borrowed a Play developer account from a US institution to publish it (inference). That gets around Play's closed-testing requirement for new individual accounts and makes the app look more credible. This is common among overseas side accounts, but it carries the risk of getting linked and banned together.

The "AI short drama" pitch was already scaled up by VibeShort, FlickReels and My Muse. You could count five or six side accounts of the same size and playbook from the same period without trying. Few people know about this one: the only coverage is store pages, APK aggregator sites and its own TikTok account, with no press and nobody discussing it on X. But everyone in its category knows the category.

If it were you

The verdict: C. It reached the chart by riding short-drama payment habits that big players trained, the low content costs of an AI library, and picking a few countries where charting is cheap. It has no differentiation of its own and a rating of 1.8, and looks more like a paid acquisition account testing payback. The playbook is worth understanding, but copying it means squeezing into a long tail that already has dozens of identical apps.

Who it's for: teams already running overseas short drama or web-novel adaptations, with an AI drama production pipeline and a paid-acquisition team, who can accept an app that's built to be swapped out every few months. For them, this is just another account, testing a few more countries.

Who it's not for: indie devs who've never run app ads and can't work out a weekly-subscription payback period; people who want to build a product that retains users long-term; anyone without content production capacity. In this business, the winners compete on library depth and ad budget, and small teams have neither edge.

If you do build: don't build "yet another AI drama app." Two things are worth borrowing: first, an AI-generated library cuts content cost by one to two orders of magnitude, so one person can ship a new series every day; second, use chart rankings in cheap markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brazil to check whether anyone pays before you add budget. The more promising gap is what it does badly: its reviews are full of "won't play, lost my login, broken on new OS versions." Small apps in this space are generally poor on experience. An app that nails playback and the payment flow, and focuses on one language and one genre (say, Indonesian contract-marriage or mafia romance), at least won't get reviewed as "I paid and can't watch."

How to acquire users: same two legs as it uses: Facebook and TikTok ads in Southeast Asia and Brazil running plot clips that land on the first few free episodes right before the paywall; plus a TikTok account posting one series in daily episodes, using mafia, contract-marriage and CEO romance hooks to build followers and a stock of ad creatives.

When to get in: the window isn't about nobody having noticed it. It's that the tail of charts like Indonesia's is still cheap. Top players add budget every month, small accounts chart every week, and AI drama creatives get more expensive the more they're used. Half a year from now, #50 on this chart probably won't be reachable with 40k installs.

What would prove the read wrong: if in a month or two installs climb into the hundreds of thousands, ratings recover above 3, and it expands to more countries, that means an AI library plus small-scale paid acquisition can sustain a real small business, not just a test. Upgrade the grade then. Conversely, if it quickly drops out of Indonesia's top 100, or the Nephrolytics account gets actioned by Play, that means it's stopped spending or been cleaned up.

Where users come from
  • Inferred Paid acquisition (AppsFlyer attribution): the privacy policy states AppsFlyer is integrated and collects install/referrer and campaign info. It charts only in 4 countries across Southeast Asia and Brazil, with Top Grossing rankings far better than Top Free. It doesn't show up in our Meta or TikTok ad libraries, but those libraries don't track drama advertisers.
  • Confirmed Running AI drama series on its own TikTok account: @dramavella (Drama Villa) has serialized The Mafia Don Hired Me As His Wife since 2026-09-02, reaching 39,1,114 followers, with a top single video around 94k views (TikHub).
  • Confirmed Borrowed US company developer account: the developer name is Nephrolytics, Inc. (a real kidney-disease AI startup). The privacy policy address is an Idaho Kidney Institute clinic, but the contact email is [email protected], and the privacy page sits under clickai999.com.
  • Inferred Brand-term search on the store: the Google-indexed Play link carries utm_term=dravelladrama, and the name is close to DramaVela and Dramavale, so it may be picking up misspelled searches (unverified).

Why DravellaDrama (com.app.dravella) got traction

Store: Google Play | Developer display name: Nephrolytics, Inc. | First seen in library 2026-08-20 | Research date 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It didn't break out on product differentiation. It's one more small account in the overseas drama space: AI-generated series as the library (low content cost), the standard "first few episodes free, then pay per episode" model, registered under a borrowed US company name, and small-scale paid acquisition in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brazil, where the Top Grossing bar is low. 40k installs was enough to reach #50 on Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing, riding the category's existing payment habits and the chart's low threshold, not the app's own quality. Rating 1.8, and the product experience is very poor.

1. Data (source: googleplay library app_snap / chart_rank, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)

  • Installs: 16,200(10-29) → 21,366(10-31) → 33,715(11-03) → 38,066(11-05) → 39,296(11-06). +23,096 in 7 days, roughly 2–3k a day. Play install counts update in bands, so the curve is stepped.
  • Ratings: 41 reviews(11-01) → 59 reviews(11-06). The average fell from 2.6 to 1.8. The 11-06 star distribution is 1★35 / 2★11 / 3★0 / 4★11 / 5★0; the library doesn't capture review text.
  • Charts (all in the Entertainment category Top Grossing; Top Free only at 120–195):
    • Indonesia: #111(10-29) → 85 → 75 → 65 → 59 → #50(11-05, 11-06); from 11-03 it also charted on Indonesia's overall Top Grossing, at #146–189.
    • Malaysia: #84–108.
    • Philippines: #107–124 (from 11-01).
    • Brazil: #122–149 (from 10-31).
    • India: #167–191 (10-29 to 11-02), then dropped off the chart.
  • In-app purchases: $9.99–19.99 each, the typical coin packs and weekly passes for drama apps.
  • Version: currently 1.2.0 (updated 2026-10-10); APKPure still lists 1.1.4. The release notes only say "optimized video caching."

How to read this: #50 on Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing is not a high bar. In the top 50 of the same chart, drama apps such as DramaBox, ReelShort, NetShort, Melolo, DramaWave, GoodShort, FlickReels, VibeShort, StoryReel and BlinkDrama take about half the slots, with installs running into tens or hundreds of millions. DravellaDrama reached #50 with only 39k installs, which shows that drama users in this market are willing to pay and the chart is cheap to enter: each user only needs to pay once or twice. That doesn't mean its revenue is high.

2. Competitors (a huge number of apps do the same thing)

Overseas vertical drama is one of the most crowded categories of 2024–2026. By our googleplay library, apps with "drama" in the name that launched after 2025-09 number in the hundreds, most of them reskinned small accounts.

The external review site aidramareviews.com (2026-08) lists 23 "AI drama" apps. Among them, FlexTV, StoReel, MoboDrama, MyMuse, VibeShort and ShortPeak explicitly say they produce content with AI. DravellaDrama is not on that list.

Bottom line: it has nothing exclusive. The "AI-generated drama" pitch is already used by VibeShort, FlickReels, My Muse, MoboDrama and Shortoo, and all of them are bigger than it.

3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  1. Paid acquisition (likely, but no direct proof of spend): The privacy policy says it integrates AppsFlyer and collects "install/referrer, attribution status, campaign information" (https://dravella-drama-app.clickai999.com/legal/privacy). Putting an attribution SDK in an app is standard practice for buying installs by channel and calculating ROI. There are also a few indirect signs:
    • Only 4 countries charted at once, and they are all cheap-ad markets in Southeast Asia and Brazil;
    • Its Top Free rank is weak, but its Top Grossing rank is much better;
    • Installs hold steady at two to three thousand a day.

It does not show up in our Meta Ad Library or TikTok Ad Library (which only covers Europe). But those libraries don't track short-drama advertisers, so not showing up doesn't mean it isn't buying ads. In search, we found several newly created Facebook pages (such as "Cinema Midnight TV", page ID 6159…) posting AI story content, a common lead-gen setup in the short-drama space. The pages require login to view, so we can't confirm they're tied to Dravella.

  1. Organic content on its own TikTok account (confirmed, but small): @dramavella (display name Drama Villa, bio "AI Drama Stories Daily") serialized one AI short drama, "The Mafia Don Hired Me As His Wife", starting on 2026-09-02, posting episode by episode through 11-05 and up to PT-39. The account has 1,114 followers and 8,628 total likes. Most videos get a few hundred to 16k views, with a peak of about 94k (PT-4). Data comes from TikHub's handler_user_profile and fetch_user_post_videos. This volume can't support 23k in weekly installs; it's at most a supporting channel.
  2. Store search / ASO (weak): A Play link indexed on Google carries utm_term=dravelladrama, which means people are searching the brand name, but the volume should be small. Its name is close to existing apps DramaVela, Dramavale, VelaFlix, and Vela Reels, so it may pick up some misdirected search traffic (unverified).
  3. Borrowed developer account (confirmed borrowed, but borrowing isn't a growth tactic in itself): The developer name on Play is "Nephrolytics, Inc.", and the privacy policy lists "NEPHROLYTICS LLC, an Idaho LLC, 4511 Zebe Ave, Chubbuck, Idaho".
    • Nephrolytics is a US startup doing clinical AI for kidney disease (nephrolytics.ai, raised a $2.5M SAFE).
    • 4511 Zebe Ave is the clinic address of the Idaho Kidney Institute.
    • The contact email, however, is [email protected], and the privacy page sits under a subdomain of clickai999.com.

Taken together, this points to a team (likely from Chinese-speaking regions or Hong Kong) that bought or borrowed a US entity's developer account. The benefit is getting around Play's closed-testing requirement for new personal accounts and making the listing look more credible. This is common among going-global side accounts.

4. Why it charted

  • The category is rising, and big players have already trained people to pay: about half of Indonesia's Top Grossing entertainment apps in the top 50 are short dramas, and users are already used to paying for the next episode. A small player only needs to bring users in to get a slice of that spending.
  • Low content cost: AI-generated episodes cost one to two orders of magnitude less than live-action shoots. A small team can build a library, post daily serials, and make ad creatives.
  • Picked markets with low chart thresholds: Entertainment grossing charts in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brazil let an app reach the top 50–130 with a few tens of thousands of installs. This is also why we surfaced it.
  • Standard paid-acquisition plus paywall model: The first few episodes are free, then coin packs at $9.99–19.99 unlock the rest. AppsFlyer attribution then decides which channels get more budget.
  • Negative signals: The rating is 1.8, with about 60% of reviews at one star. The typical problems with short-drama side accounts are an aggressive paywall, a thin library, and poor AI content quality, which weaken retention and reputation. It looks more like an ad-testing account aimed at ROI than a long-term product.

5. Differentiation

From the store listing and TikTok content, its only label is "AI-crafted stories". The feature list (vertical scroll viewing, categories, search, watch progress, favorites, history) is standard for short-drama apps, with nothing unique. The "AI short drama" angle has already been scaled up by VibeShort, FlickReels, My Muse, and others. Differentiation isn't why it worked; the category tailwind, low AI content cost, and low-threshold markets are what drove it.

6. Visibility

Few people know about it yet.

  • Web searches only turned up auto-generated pages such as the Play listing, APKPure, AppInsider, and chrome-stats, plus its own TikTok account.
  • x-radar found 0 posts mentioning it in the past 90 days.
  • No press coverage, no public revenue, not on TrustMRR.
  • But the category it sits in (AI short dramas) has been widely covered and is crowded.

7. Copycats

We found no one directly copying it. There are many side accounts using the same approach in the same period (RimoShort, Glimora, Shortoo, Duvela, Mirevale, and others), but they are copying the whole short-drama category, not it specifically.

8. What to borrow

  • "AI-generated library + serialized content on your own TikTok account + paid acquisition + coin paywall" is a low-cost playbook that can be copied.
  • Start with Southeast Asia and Brazil, where chart thresholds are low, and use Top Grossing rank to validate payment.
  • List under an established US entity account to reduce new-account review friction (with compliance risk).

9. Uncertain

  • Whether it bought ads on Meta, TikTok (Southeast Asia), or Google UAC, and how much: our ad libraries don't cover these, and AppsFlyer is only indirect evidence.
  • Whether the purchased account previously hosted other apps, and who is behind clickai999.com or whether it has other products: the domain failed to resolve at the time and we couldn't check.
  • Real revenue, ROI, and retention are unknown. A rating of 1.8 suggests retention and reputation are very likely poor, so long-term profitability is doubtful.
  • The library's launch date of 2026-08-20 may reflect metadata edits or a reset from expanding regions. But the TikTok account only started posting in early September, which roughly matches this date.
