A Thai TV-drama flute player built a set of Thai instrument apps: the yangqin app got 2,000 installs in 11 days, driven by his own TikTok
What it is A Thai khim (hammered dulcimer) on your phone: real recordings of the instrument, three sizes, Thai tuning systems, a practice-along mode with 20 songs, and a tuner. The instrument is free; songs are one-time purchases.
Why it's taking off The developer is a well-known Thai TV flute player with an existing TikTok and Facebook following. Every new instrument gets a demo video telling viewers to search "ARAN STUDIO" on Google Play, and the apps in the series push each other. Thai music students have no instrument at home to practice on, and there's no decent product for them.
CHow you could copy it If you are, or can attach yourself to, a well-known traditional instrument performer in some country, build a whole series of apps on one engine (Vietnamese zither, gamelan, kulintang and the like). Everything rides on their short videos. Without that face, don't bother.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-25 · 11-07 installs 2,044
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Aran Saengmuang is the flute player on the soundtracks of 3 Thai TV series including พรหมลิขิต, เรือนทาส and นางนาคพระโขนง. This year he used the same engine to build 6 Thai traditional instrument apps, and with each release he posts a demo video on his TikTok and Facebook telling followers to "search ARAN STUDIO on Google Play." The khim app "ขิม" launched in Oct 25 and had 2,044 installs by Nov 5. The whole series totals about 31k. The numbers are small and the money is modest, but the playbook of "performer as the face + one engine for N instruments" is clean. Below: what it is, where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who the competitors are, and whether you can copy it.
A comment only someone who has practiced khim would write
In Nov 5, a user named Yotsawin left a five-star review on ขิม's store page, but it was a request: "Could the ท notes on the left, middle and bass bridges be tuned to 中 ที or 降 ที, and the left ฟ note too? Some pieces only need those two adjusted; without them it sounds off, e.g. บุหรงหวั่นแขก and นกขมิ้นชมจันทร์."
That isn't feedback from someone who plays phone instruments for fun. It's from someone actually practicing Thai pieces. Scroll back and you'll find an Oct 31 comment: "Honestly I'm a Thai music student and I practice with this app." Under the same developer's xylophone app, someone wrote "Used it when I had no xylophone, 10 stars," and another wrote "From Sukhothai, a Thai music lover, thank you so much อรัญ teacher."
As of 11-06, ขิม had 4.8 stars and 19 reviews on Google Play in Thailand. Not many users, but the ones who come are the right people.
What it is
A Thai khim (ขิม) on your phone and tablet, plus a practice songbook. The store page lists these features:
- Three sizes: 7 / 9 / 11 bridges. The interface uses photos of the real instrument and the sound is recorded from a real khim. Holding a note produces a กรอ roll, built to sound like alternating hands rather than a machine repeat.
- Practice-along mode for 20 Thai scores: the app plays the melody for you, accompanied by the ฉิ่ง cymbals that keep time in Thai music, and the score scrolls along. You can adjust tempo, loop sections, and it remembers the speed you last practiced each piece at.
- Three tuning systems: the Thai royal-decreed tuning, the Fine Arts Department tuning, and international standard A440. Choosing one changes the sound across the whole app, and each was recorded separately.
- Tuner: listens to your real khim through the microphone and tells you how many cents sharp or flat each string is.
- MIDI keyboard input, a one-tap screen lock to prevent accidental touches, and Thai / English / Chinese language support.
The store page names these target users: Thai music students who want to practice outside class, Thai music teachers who need to demonstrate in lessons, people who haven't bought an instrument yet, and overseas Thais who miss the sound.
These details, like rolls that sound like two hands and tuning systems split between royal and Fine Arts versions, are things only a professional performer would care about. Thai primary, secondary and university schools widely teach Thai music, but the khim, xylophone and gong circle are expensive and can't be carried home, so students have nothing to practice on. That's the gap it fills.
Where the traffic comes from: a video, then "go search it in the store"
Almost all of it comes from one source: Aran himself.
His TikTok account @runjangz has 29k followers, and its bio is the flute from those TV dramas. Last August a flute solo he performed with a band got 400k views on TikTok (11-06), which made him known in Thai traditional music circles. The app series' rise lines up exactly with his posts:
| Date | What was posted | What happened next |
|---|---|---|
| July | The first large gong circle (ฆ้องวง) launched | For two and a half months it got only 10 to 30 installs per day (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| 10-11 | TikTok "Aran Studio's Android Thai instruments app": 133k views, 9,440 likes; the same video got 41k views on Facebook | Large gong circle 10-14 to 10-22 climbed from 4,242 to 8,550, peaking at +2,036 in a single day (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| 10-17 | TikTok "iOS has to wait, I don't have a Mac, can anyone help support it": 121k views | A Facebook post with 34k views: he said Big Gong hit 10k downloads in just over two months, and a new instrument has already been submitted for review 10-15 |
| 10-26 | Khim launch video, caption "search \"ขิม ARAN STUDIO\" on Google Play": 19k views on TikTok, 7,400 views on Facebook | Khim 10-31 that day: +441 |
| 10-30 | High-register xylophone (ระนาดเอก) launch video: 80k views; bass xylophone: 26k views | The high-register xylophone got 5,954 installs in a week and reached #5 on the Thai music free chart; khim got pulled up along with it |
A few things worth noting:
- Users searched the brand name, not "khim." Searching "ขิม" on Play, the top results are another developer's older khim app and a pile of foreign xylophone apps. ARAN's app doesn't appear at all (Play search page, 11-06). The line in the video, "search ขิม ARAN STUDIO," is the entire store optimization.
- New releases on order. He replies to comments with videos ("Replying to @xxx, the กลองแขก you asked for is here," 55k views). He calls ขิม something "many people requested." Under the xylophone app someone already asked for พิณ (a northeastern Thai plucked lute). The fans are waiting for the next episode.
- No sign of paid acquisition. Each inflection point lines up with a post. Whether he ran ads isn't visible from outside.
ขิม is the weakest app in the series. Lifetime installs are 2,044 (Google Play, 11-05). Its best rank on the Thai music free chart was #43 (11-03), it has since slipped to #86 (11-06), and daily new installs fell from around 600 to a hundred or two (AppstoreSpy estimate). Series scorecard:
| App | Launched | Total installs | Best rank on Thai music free chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large gong circle ฆ้องวง | 07-19 | 13,594 | 29 |
| Thai drum กลองไทย | 07-06 | 4,283 | 36 |
| Khim ขิม | 10-25 | 2,044 | 43 |
| High-register xylophone ระนาดเอก | 10-29 | 5,954 | 5 |
| Bass xylophone ระนาดทุ้ม | 10-29 | 3,317 | 12 |
| Small gong circle ฆ้องวงเล็ก | 10-29 | 1,565 | 34 |
(Google Play installs, 11-06)
Where the money comes from
Not much, and he doesn't rely on it anyway.
ขิม is free and includes three sizes of instrument, international tuning, the tuner and 3 songs. The rest of the songs are bought one at a time, or a one-time "Pro" unlock removes ads and unlocks all songs and all tuning systems. The store page specifically notes "all one-time purchases, lifetime use, not a monthly subscription." Single songs cost 0.99 to 19.99 USD, and there are ads. No revenue figures are public. 30k installs, one-time purchase, one country: by inference, the volume comes to a few hundred dollars a month.
The phone app is more of a funnel entrance. He also runs a website, ThaiMusicHub, which sells "THAI SCORE," desktop Thai notation software (one-time purchase of 2,500 baht), and sound-library plugins for Thai instruments. Students practice on the phone app, and teachers and arrangers then buy the desktop software.
Who it's competing with
Almost nobody is seriously building in this space.
| Product | Where | Scale | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khim(PC Bunnun) | Android | 41k installs, +720 in the last 7 days | An established khim simulator, ranked #1 when searching "ขิม" on Play. Some school teachers filmed teaching videos recommending it. No multi-tuning samples of the real instrument, no practice scores, no tuner. |
| Khim@Pro (same developer) | Android | 568 installs | An advanced version released in September that didn't take off |
| Dontee | Android | 34k installs | A generic Thai music learning app, not dedicated to one instrument |
| A xylophone app built by a student at Prince of Songkla University | Android / iOS | Very small | Not updated in years |
| Thai Tuner | iOS | 74 ratings | Tuner only, cannot play |
| Thai Melody Lab | Not yet released | TikTok 4,424 followers | Also building a large gong circle simulator, teased since February, still in testing |
The iOS side is emptier: searching "ขิม" and "khim" in the Thai App Store turns up no matching app (11-06). An iPad user made a TikTok teaching people to "use Real Drum to change the sound and pass it off as a large gong circle," and both of his videos got 60-70k views. The demand is there; the product isn't. As late as Oct, Aran himself was still saying iOS was impossible without a Mac.
ขิม is a better product than its old rival, but it gets a twentieth of the traffic and still can't outrank it in search. It grows because of the person, not the product. The product determines whether the people who do arrive leave good reviews and whether teachers are willing to pass it along.
If it were you
C: The playbook is worth learning, but there's no room for it in Thailand, and doing it in another country isn't a good business either. The key piece, a performer who is well known in the scene and has a following of their own, is something you can't get, and the market itself is tiny: a one-time purchase model worth a few hundred dollars a month.
Who it suits: people who are already performers or teachers of some traditional instrument, have a little following, and can build apps. Or developers who know someone like that well and are willing to co-op a revenue split. The goal is reputation, then selling courses and software afterward, not in-app purchases.
Who it's NOT for: indie devs who want to make money from this without a face. If you can't bring a personality (no creator following, no teacher network), you're just another PC Bunnun: 40k installs and nobody knows who you are.
How to do it: build an engine and plan a whole series at once. Find a country with many traditional instruments, school classes that teach them, expensive physical versions, and no decent phone app yet. Examples: Vietnam's đàn tranh, Indonesia's gamelan, the Philippines' kulintang, Laos' khaen. Partner with a well-known local performer or teacher. Copy the formula: real sampled instruments, local tuning systems, play-along scores, a tuner. Give away the instrument and tuner for free, sell songs as one-time purchases. In Thailand, the open slot is iOS and iPad: schools use iPads a lot, but Aran could fill it any time, so don't try to take his audience.
How to get users: put everything on the performer's own TikTok and Facebook. Post a demo video for each new instrument with one message: "Search [instrument name] + your studio name on the store." Ask viewers in the comments to vote for the next instrument, then reply with videos. Get a few school teachers to use it in class. One teacher can bring in a whole class.
Window: no hard deadline. This isn't a trend play, it's slowly building a community. But each country only has room for one of these, so whoever ties up with its most famous performer first wins.
Signs you read it wrong: if Aran's series drops back to a few dozen installs a day after each new-release video, with no long tail, then these apps only survive on the founder constantly posting. Anyone else would be just as tired. The other way round: if the whole series doubles after the iOS launch and THAI SCORE sells well, then "phone app as top of funnel" can really support one person.

Why ขิม (Khim, ARAN STUDIO) broke through
Channel: Google Play (Thailand) | Package com.aran.khim | Listed 2026-10-25 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This isn't an app that "broke through on its own." It's a well-known Thai folk-music performer (Aran Saengmuang, flute player on a major 3-channel Thai TV drama) taking one engine, "real samples + Thai score practice," and mass-producing it as a series of Thai instrument apps. On his own TikTok and Facebook accounts (hundreds of thousands of views combined), he directly tells people to search "ขิม ARAN STUDIO" on the Play Store, which funnels fans and Thai music students in. ขิม is product #3 in this matrix. Its growth came from the matrix and the founder's content, and the product itself reached "teachers can use it in class" quality in a niche almost nobody was building for properly: traditional Thai instruments.

About 30.8k installs combined. ขิม is the weakest of the batch. The real stars are ฆ้องวง and the newly launched ระนาดเอก.
The turning point: not ขิม itself, but the two mid-October videos
ฆ้องวง was launched in July, then had only 10–30 installs a day for two and a half months (AppstoreSpy estimate: 8-12 1,113 → 10-07 2,642). Then:
- 10-11 The founder posted on TikTok: "Thai instrument apps on Android from Aran Studio": 133k views, 9,440 likes (TikHub). The same post reached 41k views and 1.5K engagements on Facebook.
- 10-15 Facebook post: "ฆ้องวง alone is close to 10k downloads in two-plus months. More new instrument apps are coming within 3 weeks, already submitted for review."
- 10-17 TikTok: "iOS will have to wait, no Mac to build it. Anyone kind enough to support us?" 121k views; the same post on FB got 34k views / 1.1K engagements.
- Result: ฆ้องวง rank 10-14 → 10-22, rising from 4,242 to 8,550,10-22, with a single-day gain of +2,036 (AppstoreSpy estimate).
ขิม's launch reused the same playbook:
- Pre-launch FB teaser: "ขิม, another tablet app everyone asked for, is under review": 16k views / 466 engagements.
- Listing video 10-26 (7.4K FB views / 224 interactions; 19k TikTok views). The caption says outright: 'Go to Google Play and search "ขิม ARAN STUDIO".'
- 10-30 ระนาดเอก launch video on TikTok hit 80K views. Same-day three-in-one video (ระนาดเอก / ระนาดทุ้ม / ฆ้องวงเล็ก) got 18K views. The new apps share the same fanbase, so ขิม got pulled up too (10-31, +441 that day).
2. Competitors
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How ขิม differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khim(PC Bunnun,org.godotengine.khim) | Android | 2024-10-12 | 41,332 installs, last 7 days +720 (googleplay library) | The old Thai khim simulator, the only one with real traction. Built on the Godot engine, it can record 5 songs. It has no score practice, no tuning system, no MIDI. Thai school teachers have made tutorial videos promoting it (YouTube "Application Khim Thai by wanida", Khon Kaen University Demonstration School). Searching "ขิม" on Play ranks it #1, and ARAN's ขิม doesn't appear in the top results. |
| Khim@Pro(PC Bunnun) | Android | 2026-09-08 | 568 installs | Advanced version from the same developer, mostly didn't take off. |
| Dontee(dontee-dolly) | Android | Unknown | 34,418 installs, +1,003 in the last 7 days | Thai music-learning app, ranked #93 on Thailand Music. More of a learning tool than a single-instrument simulator. |
| Ranaad-Xek Lite (Prince of Songkla University ICT students) | Android / iOS | 2013 school year | Not in library | A student-assignment-style xylophone app, not updated in years. |
| Thai Tuner(Digitopolis) | iOS | 2017 | 74 ratings (TH) | Thai-tuning tuner. Tunes only, doesn't play. |
| Thai Melody Lab(TikTok @thaimelody.lab) | Not listed | 2026-02 teaser | TikTok 4,424 followers | Also building a large gong simulator app, still in testing. |
| Naathap Beat(อาจารย์กณพ กิ้มเฉี้ยง) | iOS | 2026 | Not verified | Thai khong wong (หน้าทับ) rhythm arrangements, complementary to the instrument simulation; pushed in the Thai traditional music FB circles |
| Real Drum / GarageBand workaround | iOS | Early on | Real Drum 38k ratings | iPad users can only use a hacky trick of tuning Real Drum to a big gong-circle timbre (TikTok @hellobell57 two tutorials, 65k and 76k views), meaning the iOS side is completely empty |
| Physical Khim + Pano Tuner | Offline / general-purpose App | – | – | Khim teachers tune with the general-purpose tuner Pano Tuner (TikTok @khim_club, @johnrichest); ขิม's built-in Thai three-tuning-system tuner directly replaces it |
Verdict: Thai traditional instrument apps on Play are only sporadic individual or university work; on iOS there isn't even a decent khim app (searching "ขิม" and "khim" in the Thai App Store turns up nothing relevant, checked by 2026-11-06 via macmini using the iTunes Search API). No big companies, no overseas studios are doing it.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Founder's own content account (confirmed): TikTok @runjangz (Aran Saengmuang, 29k followers, 499k total likes, bio: 'the original flute melodies from Thai 3 TV dramas พรหมลิขิต / เรือนทาส / นางนาคพระโขนง') plus Facebook profile aranflute. Every app launch comes with a demo video and 'search X ARAN STUDIO in the store'.
- Brand search rather than store SEO (confirmed): On Play, searching "ขิม" shows PC Bunnun's Khim, Khim@Pro and a pile of foreign xylophones on the first screen; no ARAN ขิม (r.jina.ai read the Play search page, 2026-11-06). Users come in with the word "ARAN STUDIO" in hand.
- Cross-promotion across the lineup drives volume (confirmed): 6 apps share one engine, one icon style, one description template, and the same in-app purchase range ($0.99–19.99); one video promotes three apps. Comments under ระนาดเอก include someone saying directly, "Good, now I want พิณ (the next one)."
- Users "order" and he replies to comments with videos (confirmed): TikTok "ตอบกลับ @captin4694 กลองแขกที่ขอดูครับ" (55k views), "ตอบกลับ @.2113394 เอาให้ดูตามขอ" (66k views); on FB he says ขิม is one "many people asked for." Strong sense of community participation.
- Teacher / school word of mouth (partly confirmed): Comments under ระนาดเอก include "practice with it when there's no instrument around" and "from a Sukhothai lover of Thai music, thanks อาจารย์อรัญ"; on TikTok a user @zxhayer posted practice videos tagged aranstudio. The recall card's claim that music teacher krumimm proactively filmed a teaching video recommending it does not hold up: krumimm's "ฝึกเล่นขิมในโทรศัพท์" was posted on 2026-08-01, nearly 3 months before ขิม launched, so what he was promoting was likely PC Bunnun's Khim.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. Our ad library only tracks listed products, so not finding ads doesn't mean there were none; but on timing, every inflection point lines up with the founder's posts.
4. Why users come, stay, and pay
- Real demand, real vacuum: Thai primary, secondary and university schools commonly offer Thai music classes (ดนตรีไทย); khim, xylophone and gong-circle physical instruments are expensive and can't be taken home. Students want to practice at home; teachers want to demo in class. Existing apps are rough (few samples, no Thai tuning systems).
- Expert details that hit insiders: 7/9/11 string sizes; the press is a two-hand alternating roll (กรอ), not machine-gun repeats; three tuning systems (royal-decreed / Fine Arts Department / international A440), with every sound sampled separately in all three; Thai notation with ฉิ่ง cymbal accompaniment, adjustable tempo, looping; built-in tuner; MIDI keyboard support; screen lock to prevent accidental touches; Thai / English / Chinese. These are points only a performer would think of.
- Monetization: Three sizes, the tuner and 3 pieces are free; the remaining 17 pieces are sold per song or per pack ($0.99–19.99), plus ads. The founder also sells the desktop "THAI SCORE" Thai notation editor on ThaiMusicHub (2,500 baht one-time purchase) and VST sound plugins; the phone app is the top of the funnel.
- Diaspora: The description specifically mentions "overseas Thais who miss the sound of Thai music," but so far it has only charted in the Thai store.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
- Compared with PC Bunnun's Khim (the only decent old rival, 41k installs): ARAN has real instrument samples + three Thai tuning systems + score practice mode + tuner + MIDI, making it feel more like a "practice tool" than a "toy."
- But differentiation is not the main reason ขิม took off: to date ขิม's installs are only 5% of the old rival's, and it can't beat it in Play search. It grew because the author is a well-known performer with a built-in audience, plus lineup cross-promotion. Product strength determines whether people who arrive stay and leave good reviews (4.8 stars), and whether teachers are willing to pass it along.
- In other words: distribution runs on people (the founder's IP), retention on expertise, scale on the lineup.
6. How visible it is
- No public revenue; not on TrustMRR; no media coverage; no discussion on X (x-radar search for "aran studio khim" over the past 30 days returned 0 results).
- Spreading only within Thai traditional music circles (the founder's FB / TikTok followers, Thai music teachers and students).
- Copycats: Thai Melody Lab is also making a big gong-circle simulation app (teased from 2026-02, not yet listed); PC Bunnun released Khim@Pro in September (568 installs). I haven't seen anyone copying ARAN's playbook outright.
7. What others can learn
- A "one engine × N instruments" lineup: the framework of samples + score practice + local tuning system tuner can be transplanted directly to other countries' folk instruments: China's guzheng / yangqin, Korea's gayageum, Vietnam's đàn tranh, Indonesia's gamelan, the Philippines' kulintang (already a few on Play, e.g. my.virtual.kulintangapp), Laos' khaen.
- Find a well-known performer / teacher in the scene as the face: having him post "demo + search X on the store" videos works far better than store SEO or paid ads; taking requests in comments and then launching new instruments creates a serialized drama.
- Give plenty for free, charge per track: instruments and the tuner are free; the music library is sold per song in-app, so students can afford it and teachers are willing to recommend it.
- iOS vacuum: Thai schools use iPads heavily, yet iOS has no matching product (the author himself says he lacks a Mac and hasn't shipped on iOS yet).
8. Uncertain
- Whether the iOS version is out: the recall card says "iOS launched," but 2026-11-06 searching the Thai App Store finds no ARAN STUDIO instrument app; the author still says at 10-17 he doesn't have a Mac. 11-03 there is a TikTok titled "แอปเครื่องดนตรีไทยบน iPhone" whose content I could not verify.
- Actual in-app purchase and ad revenue is unknown; paid conversion rate is unknown.
- Released 10-25 but only started getting installs by 10-29, ramped up in 23 or 10-31 or 10-26 — could be review delays / staggered rollout, or the creator's video picking up slowly. Unverified.
- Whether they ran FB / TikTok ads is unverified (our ad library doesn't track it).
- Whether the curve will, like ฆ้องวง, fall back after the first wave to a long tail of a few dozen installs a day remains to be seen; ขิม's ranking is already sliding.
