Draw a plot on a map, pay 559 lira to see if there's gold underground: six weeks with a Turkish treasure-hunting app
What it is A Turkish-language satellite land-scanning app: draw a plot on a map and within a minute get a probability map marking "precious metal traces, groundwater, buried structures" with AI interpretation. The phone can also be used as a metal detector.
Why it took off The Turkish treasure-hunting scene already paid people to "look at the land by satellite." It turned this into a self-serve app: the first scan is free but the discovery positions are locked; each unlock costs 559 lira. Few people install it, but a high share of them pay.
A70How you could follow it Replicate the same model in another treasure-hunting market (Arabic-speaking regions, Iran, the Balkans, Latin America). Use the local-language generic term for "land scan" as the app name to capture store search, then recruit local treasure-hunting gear dealers and creators to drive installs.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-21 · 11-06 installs 14,994
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-06 (9 days, 9 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
A Turkish individual developer used public satellite data and Gemini to build an app that "looks at your land from space." Outside Turkey almost no one has heard of it. In 6 weeks it got 15k installs and ranked 30 on Turkey's utility Top Grossing chart. The people actually using it are the large number of treasure-hunting hobbyists in Turkey. Below: what it sells, where the money comes from, why such a niche product gets paid, and whether you could copy it in another country.
"We've wondered for years what's really in our land"
Oct 24, a user on the Turkey App Store gave it five stars: "Senelerdir arazimizde neler var merak ediyorduk. Bütün analizlerimizi yaptırdık." (We've wondered for years what's on our land; we had all our analyses done.)
Four days later, on Oct 28, another user gave it one star with the title "Tamamen para tuzağı", a pure money trap: "We ran land analyses, the map marked precious metals, structures and water, but on site we found none of it."
Both reviews are about the same app: Arazi Tarama: Land Scan AI, listed on Google Play in Sep 21 and on iOS in Oct 22, with the iOS seller Kasim Yilmaz, an individual developer. The usage is simple: draw a plot's boundary on a map, and after about a minute the map shows numbered markers for "precious metal traces," "groundwater," "buried structure traces" and "void / cave traces," each rated in three tiers: VAR (present), OLASI (possible), ZAYIF SİNYAL (weak signal). Next to it is a Turkish-language AI interpretation you can keep questioning.
Who it actually sells to
The website says "land analysis" and includes quite respectable features like crop suitability, distance to the nearest active fault and parcel numbers (ada/parsel). But looking at its other features shows who the real users are:
- İşaret Çözücü (symbol interpreter): photograph symbols carved into a rock, and the AI tells you their "traditional meaning" and suggests scanning the surroundings from satellite. The Play store listing is more direct: it interprets the symbol's meaning in "folk belief (define tradition)."
- Coin and artifact identification: photograph coins, seals or pottery, and it tells you which civilization and era they're from.
- Metal detector: the phone's magnetometer used as a detector, and it can walk a field cell by cell to draw a heatmap. The website honestly states the range: small items a few centimeters, large objects 10–30 centimeters.
- Navigate to discovery points, expert opinions, community: community posts show location only down to the province.
In Turkish, "define" refers to buried treasure and also to the act of hunting for it. Turkey's treasure-hunting scene is large: on TikTok, dealers selling underground imaging devices have videos with up to 1.04M views (TikTok, @mena.dedektor34). "Having someone look at your land by satellite (uydudan yer baktırma)" has long been a business, with people taking orders via DMs on TikTok and Facebook, and some selling Surfer, a Windows automated analysis tool, listed in YouTube descriptions at 20,000 TL per year. These services generally have a bad reputation, and TikTok has dedicated anti-scam accounts making videos that say "satellite treasure hunting is a scam."
Arazi Tarama didn't need to educate anyone. The demand, the habit of paying and the scene's jargon were all ready-made; it simply swapped "pay someone to look at the land" for "look at it yourself on your phone."
The numbers: few users, but a high share pay
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Total installs | 14,994 | Google Play,11-06 |
| New in the last 7 days | 4,533 (10-29 is 10,461) | Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06 |
| Turkey Utilities Top Grossing chart | Ranked 30–37, on the chart daily since 10-29 | Google Play charts |
| Turkey Utilities Top Free chart | Ranked 119–125, only entered the chart from 11-03 | Google Play charts |
| Other countries | Not on any chart | Google Play charts |
| Self-reported on the website | 13,500+ registered users, 14,000+ analyses, 129,000+ hectares | arazitarama.com,11-06 |
| iOS | 14 ratings, average 3.71; of 8 written reviews, 3 are one-star | App Store Turkey store, 11-06 |
The most telling is the gap between the two rankings: around #30 on Top Grossing versus around #120 on Top Free. Not many people install it, but the share who pay is far higher than their neighbors on that chart. On that list, its neighbors are VPNs, cleaner apps and "who viewed my profile"; it's the only vertical niche tool.
Another number: analyses run (14,000+) and registered users (13,500+) are about the same. That means most people used only the one free analysis, and a minority pay, but those who do buy several plots' worth of inferences. How much revenue this brings in is not visible from outside, and the developer has never disclosed it.
Where the money comes from: one lock
Pricing is listed on the website. There is no subscription; credits are sold per use and never expire:
| Plan | Pricing | Single use |
|---|---|---|
| First analysis | Free | Sign up and get one full analysis free, with 3D |
| 1 times | 559 TL | 559 TL |
| 3 times | 1,500 TL | 500 TL |
| 10 times | 4,500 TL | 450 TL |
(Play Store in-app purchase range is $2.99–$99.99; 559 TL is roughly $13 USD, estimate.)
The key is one line in the official FAQ: "In the free analysis, the discovery points show as locked markers; one analysis credit unlocks them all." So the first time you outline your own land, it tells you "there's a VAR-grade precious metal signal here" but not where. For someone who's been curious for years, that's nearly impossible not to pay for.
Other details are also designed around payment: re-scanning the same plot costs no credits (to build trust), 3- and 10-scan bundles have a lower unit price (treasure hunters often have several plots, or want to scan the surrounding area), and the phone metal detector has a free trial that charges after it expires.
559 TL isn't cheap, and a one-star review says "free first analysis sounds nice, but this price is too much." Still, compared with what this niche used to pay, human satellite-analysis DMs quoting prices, Surfer software at 20,000 TL a year, and ground-penetrating imaging equipment costing tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of TL, it's the cheapest entry point.
Where users come from: most likely search
Its own social presence is weak and can't explain 15k installs: the official TikTok account @arazitarama has 78 followers and 10 videos, with the top video at 728 views (TikTok, 11-06). Its content features "satellite analysis" of popular sites like Göbekli Tepe and the "Noah's Ark remains" on Mount Ararat. The Facebook page has about 140 followers but shows over 500 people "talking about this," with engagement far above follower count, usually a sign of boosted posts, though I couldn't find specific ads, unverified.
The more likely main channel is inferred from store search. The app name "Arazi Tarama" is a generic Turkish term meaning "area scanning / land scanning"; searching it on TikTok, nearly all top results are treasure-hunting equipment videos, showing it's a high-frequency term in the community. The name itself is the keyword, and there are few similar apps, so searching this term on Play likely ranks it near the top. There's no discussion of it on X, Reddit, or in the media.
On 10-22 it launched on iOS, and on 10-31 it shipped a 3D terrain update, both announced officially, but Play's daily growth showed no clear jump afterward.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | What it is | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual "satellite land-viewing" service | Taking orders via TikTok / Facebook DMs, Surfer analysis software | Top single video around 240k views; software 20,000 TL/year | Manual, opaque pricing, bad reputation |
| Ground-penetrating imaging equipment (Apron, Vega, Axion, Zirve, etc.) | Hardware, promoted by dealers on TikTok | One video with 1.04M views | Tens of thousands of TL minimum, requires on-site visits |
| VeldScan | English satellite treasure-hunting app, launched in July | 10,784 installs, 7 days +804, ranked 140 among Malaysia's map top-grossing apps (Google Play, 11-06) | Global, English-language, no local culture |
| Emare Tarih | Treasure symbol interpretation + community, launched in July | 1,850 installs | No satellite analysis |
| Define Rota 3D | Views KMZ layers + AR, launched in August | Very small | Doesn't produce its own analysis |
| Altın Avcısı AI | Judges whether a stone has gold from a photo | One TikTok with 74k views | Doesn't do plot analysis |
| Phone metal detectors (Metal Detector, etc.) | Magnetometer only | 17.7M installs, ranked 91 among Turkish tools top-grossing | The magnetometer is only a supporting feature for it |
Similar apps exist, but they all emerged in the last few months and are very small. The combination of "Turkish language, self-service, satellite plus AI conclusions, pay per use" is held by it alone on the charts. I also haven't seen anyone copying it.
What it got right
- It turned a poorly regarded paid service into a "legitimate tool". The official site has a whole section called "Transparency," opening with "Arazi Tarama is not a magic wand," then listing its data sources: ESA Sentinel-2, Copernicus elevation models, Esri imagery, USGS earthquake catalog, geological maps, Google Gemini; conclusions are stated only as probabilities; the footer cites Turkey's Law No. 2863 on cultural heritage and the Mining Administration MAPEG, stating that digging requires permits and the app cannot replace them. Adding agriculture and earthquake features lets it list and pass review as a "tool" and makes users feel it isn't a scam.
- The pricing targets this community's wallet: free first time, key locations locked, a few hundred lira per use, no subscription.
- The entire treasure-hunting process lives in one app: outline the plot → 3D terrain view → navigate to discovery points → phone on-site scanning → photograph symbols and coins → ask an expert → post to community. Each step is a reason to come back and buy again.
- Fast. One person, 6 weeks: Android, iOS, 3D terrain, metal detection, and community all shipped; the Play version went out in two versions within 10-25 to 10-31. The data is all public, interpretation is handed to Gemini, no heavy lifting.
Conversely, this is also its weakness: no moat. Anyone can download the data and tune the models, and VeldScan has already shown that switching languages makes a new app.
The risks are in the reviews
On iOS there are 8 reviews, 3 of them one-star, all saying the same thing: it's marked on the map, but nothing was found on the ground; too expensive. That's an unavoidable problem for this kind of product: it sells "maybe," users want "certain." Two other risks: the stores might treat it as a misleading feature, and Turkey's illegal digging is under constant enforcement, so such apps could be implicated. Neither has happened yet, but followers should factor them in.
If it were you
One-line verdict: worth following, but don't compete with it in Turkey; instead, take the same playbook to another market where "treasure-hunting culture is strong and people already pay to have land looked at," before it or VeldScan goes multilingual.
Who it suits: 1–2 people, one who can build an app (maps, satellite data processing, and calling LLMs are all not hard), and one who is a native speaker of the target market, ideally already in the local treasure-hunting, mineral-prospecting, or water-finding circles, knowing the slang and symbols.
Who it doesn't suit: those who don't understand local culture and only want an English global version (VeldScan is already doing that, and English-speaking global markets are scattered without a concentrated community like the one define has); those who can't get past "selling probabilities" will always have one-star reviews.
How to build it: launch Android first, iOS later. Outline the plot → within a minute, a map with numbered markers + native-language AI interpretation → first use free, locations locked → sell credits per use, no subscription, no expiry. Learn its "transparency" approach on the website and store page: list data sources, give only probabilities, cite local heritage law as a disclaimer, then add legitimate features like agriculture and groundwater. Don't skip companion features like the phone magnetometer, symbol interpretation, and coin recognition; they're the reason for repeat purchases. Markets worth considering: Arabic-speaking regions (Gulf, Egypt, Iraq), Iran, the Balkans, Central Asia, South Africa, Latin America. Pick which market to test first by checking how many accounts on TikTok sell treasure-hunting gear or "satellite land viewing," and how high their view counts are.
How to get users: use the generic local-language term for "land scanning / treasure scanning" as the app name, which is likely its main traffic source; then find local treasure-hunting equipment dealers and treasure-hunting creators on TikTok / Facebook to partner with. Their single videos reach hundreds of thousands of views, much faster than building an account from scratch. Using historic sites as "satellite analysis" demos can work as content, but by its own experience such content gets small views, so don't expect much.
Deadline: it finished both ends plus 6D in 3 weeks, so followers should also launch within 4–6 weeks; if by 2027 January it or VeldScan has shipped Arabic or Persian versions, the market you choose will need to change.
Signs you've misjudged: ① it drops out of the top 100 of the Turkish tools top-grossing chart while installs keep rising, meaning payment can't hold up and only one-time curiosity remains; ② it gets removed from Play or the App Store, or the stores start a sweep against similar apps; ③ a month after your launch in the chosen market, your post-free-analysis payment rate is clearly below its (its top-grossing rank should be 80 or more places higher than its top-free rank, and yours should also rank higher on top-grossing than top-free); ④ "money trap" one-star reviews make up more than half of your reviews.

One line
It's a Turkish-language "satellite land scanning" app: draw a plot on the map and get a one-minute probability report on "mineralization traces / groundwater / buried structures / cavities" (Sentinel-2 + Copernicus DEM + geological maps + Gemini interpretation), with the phone magnetometer doubling as a metal detector. Nominally it's land analysis, but in practice it runs on Turkey's large define (treasure hunting / digging for artifacts) hobbyist market. It works because it turned "satellite land scanning (uydudan yer baktırma)", a service people in this community were already paying for, into a standardized app: first scan free, then credits sold per scan (about 500 TL each).
1. Data: how big it is now
- Cumulative global installs 14,994; 10-29 new installs in the last 10,461,7 days 4,533, roughly 400–1,200 per day (googleplay library app_day, 2026-10-29 to 11-06). Listed on 2026-09-21, so just over 6 weeks to 15k.
- Charted only in Turkey: TR TOOLS Top Grossing rank 30–37 (on the chart every day since 10-29), TR TOOLS Top Free rank 119–125 (only reached the chart from 11-03) (googleplay library chart_rank). Its grossing rank is consistently far higher than its free rank, meaning few users but high paying conversion. Its chart neighbors are VPN, cleaner, and "who viewed my profile" apps; it's the only niche utility on the chart.
- In-app purchases $2.99–$99.99; official pricing is a free first analysis, 1 scans for 559 TL, 3 scans for 1,500 TL, 10 scans for 4,500 TL; credits don't expire, no subscription (arazitarama.com).
- The official site self-reports 13,500+ registered users, 14,000+ analyses, 129,000+ hectares (arazitarama.com, 2026-11-01 version). Analyses and users are roughly equal, meaning most people only used that one free analysis, and the paying customers are a small group of heavy users.
- The iOS version launched 2026-10-22, credited to Kasim Yilmaz (an individual developer), with 14 ratings in the Turkey store, averaging 3.71 (iTunes lookup).
- Play releases move fast: 2.1.7 (10-25) → 2.1.8 (10-31, added 3D terrain).
2. Competitors: who else is doing this
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Human "satellite land scanning" services (@uydudan.yer.baktr, @xicatprojeleri, Osmanlı Baykuşu's Surfer analysis, etc. on TikTok/FB) | Other (social media DM hiring, Windows software) | Years | xicatprojeleri single video with 240k views; Osmanlı Baykuşu's Surfer auto-analysis sells for 20,000 TL/year (YouTube description) | Human, via DM, opaque pricing, bad reputation (often called a scam); Arazi Tarama is a self-serve app, results in one minute, first scan free, prices clearly listed |
| Ground-level "area scanning (alan tarama)" / 3D underground imaging devices (Apron Range, Vega, Axion, Zirve, etc., pushed by dealers on TikTok) | Other (hardware) | Years | mena.dedektor34 one video with 1.04M views | Hardware costing tens to hundreds of thousands of TL; it costs a few hundred TL and works at home, with the phone magnetometer for "on-site preliminary checks" |
| VeldScan(WorldConnect Apps) | Android / web | 2026-07-26 | 10,784 installs, 7 days +804, Malaysia MAPS Top Grossing 140 (googleplay library) | English, aimed at global treasure hunters, with a "candidate terrain anomaly" layer; Arazi Tarama is in Turkish, localized to define culture (rock-symbol interpretation, Turkish plot ada/parsel data, 2863 legal disclaimer) |
| Define Rota 3D | Android | 2026-08 | Very small (the official TikTok account has 332 views) | Only views KMZ analysis layers + AR, no satellite analysis of its own |
| Emare Tarih(Mertcan Karadağ) | Android | 2026-07-29 | 1,850 installs (googleplay library) | Define-symbol interpretation / community; no satellite analysis |
| Altın Avcısı AI | Android | Around 2025 | One TikTok with 74k views | Judges "whether there's gold" from rock photos; no plot analysis |
| Phone metal detectors (Metal Detector - Metal Finder, etc.) | Android | From ¥2021 | 17.7M installs, TR TOOLS Top Grossing 91 (googleplay library) | Magnetometer only; Arazi Tarama treats the magnetometer as a companion feature, with satellite reports as the main selling point |
| Google Earth / free remote-sensing tools | Big-company features / open source | — | Very large | Can show imagery but doesn't deliver conclusions like "there may be ore / water / structures here"; that conclusion and interpretation is what it sells |
Conclusion: similar apps exist, but all are small and mostly appeared in the last few months; what they do directly substitutes for Turkey's offline define-community services and hardware. The combination of "self-serve, Turkish-language, satellite plus AI report, pay per scan" is unique on the chart.
3. Where users come from
- Its own social presence is too weak to explain 15k installs: TikTok @arazitarama has 78 followers and 10 videos, the top one with 728 views (TikHub, 11-06); Facebook @Arazitaramax has about 140 followers but the page shows "519–562 people talking about this" (Jina search summary), with engagement far above follower count, which usually means posts are being promoted or ads run. Unverified: our metaads library doesn't track this advertiser (checked page name, package name, and domain: all 0 rows; not being in the list doesn't mean it didn't run ads).
- Riding popular sites for content: official content uses Göbeklitepe and the Ahlat "Noah's Ark site" as demos for "satellite analysis", posted on Instagram / Facebook Reels; the secondary account @istanbul_kelebek posted one Göbeklitepe video with a Play link (524 views) 10-05. View counts are very low.
- Store search (most likely the main channel): The app name is itself a common Turkish term, "Arazi Tarama" (area / land scan), and the subtitle adds Land Scan AI. On TikTok, searching "arazi tarama" turns up mostly define-device videos, so it's a high-frequency term in this scene. The name is the keyword, and few similar apps exist, so it's easy to rank near the top of the store. Unverified: no keyword ranking data.
- Organic search + software download sites: Softonic, CNET Download and AppBrain have indexed it automatically (Jina search), but the volume is limited.
- iOS launch (10-23) and the 3D feature update (10-31): Both were announced officially. Play daily growth showed no clear spike after 11-02, so the impact was modest.
- X / Reddit / HN / media: x-radar finds nothing (60 posts on "arazi tarama" in the last 0 days), and no media coverage turned up.
4. Why it took off
- The demand already existed, and people already paid: Define culture is huge in Turkey. On TikTok, accounts selling treasure-hunting gear and "satellite land views" get hundreds of thousands to millions of views per video. "Paying someone to look at a plot via satellite" was already a paid manual service (e.g., Surfer's automated analysis sells for 20,000 TL/year). It has no education market to build; it just moved an existing paid behavior into an app.
- Pricing matches the wallet of this crowd: First scan is free, and in the free report the exact locations of results are locked ("signal detected, but position requires payment"), a strong paywall hook. At 559 TL per use it's far cheaper than hardware or manual services, but the unit price is high enough that just 15k installs keep it steadily ranked 30 on the TR TOOLS Top Grossing chart.
- Packaged as "scientific, transparent, legal": The website clearly states its data sources (Sentinel-2, Copernicus DEM, USGS, GEM, Gemini). Results are split into three probability tiers, VAR / OLASI / ZAYIF SİNYAL, and it cites Law No. 2863 on cultural heritage and MAPEG in its disclaimers. It also added "serious" features like agricultural suitability, earthquake risk and parcel info. This lets it list as a TOOLS app and pass store review, and it reduces the "scam" impression, which matters because manual services in this scene have a bad reputation.
- The product covers the whole treasure-hunting workflow: satellite plot selection → 3D terrain → navigate to the discovery point → on-site "area scan" heatmap using the phone's magnetometer → rock symbol interpretation (İşaret Çözücü) → coin identification → expert opinion → community. Every step happens inside the app, and each step can drive another paid analysis.
- Low development cost, fast iteration: Everything runs on public satellite data plus Gemini. One individual developer (the iOS seller is Kasim Yilmaz) shipped Android, iOS, 3D, metal detection and community versions within 6 weeks.
5. Differentiation
Compared with hardware and manual "satellite land view" services: self-serve, results in one minute, free first scan, transparent pricing. Compared with VeldScan, an English-language app of this type: deep Turkish localization, covering Turkish-language AI interpretation, define symbol culture, ada/parsel parcel numbers, Turkish legal disclaimers and TL pricing. Compared with phone metal detectors: the main selling point is the satellite report, with the magnetometer as a companion feature.
This differentiation is why it took off: the demand and willingness to pay were already there, and it was the first to turn that demand into a Turkish-language app that looks like a legitimate tool. The moat is shallow: the data is all public, the model is Gemini, and VeldScan has already shown that a version in another language is easy to build.
6. How many people know about it
Few people know about it yet: Revenue is not public, no media coverage exists, and X has 0 posts. Its own social followings are only in the tens to hundreds. It charts only in Turkey. Negative signals have already appeared: of 8 iOS reviews, 3 are one-star, calling it a "money trap" and "found nothing on site" and "too expensive"; on TikTok, the anti-scam account @kayitliantikarsivler posted a video saying "satellite treasure hunting is a scam" (2026-08 / 09, without naming it).
7. Copycats
No clear copycat found. Contemporaries VeldScan (July, English), Emare Tarih (July), Define Rota 3D (August) and Altın Avcısı AI launched earlier or at the same time, in similar directions, so none counts as copying it.
8. What to borrow
- Niche hobby circles (treasure hunting, feng shui site selection, fishing spots, mineral and water prospecting) where a paid manual service with a poor reputation already exists, built into a self-serve app using public data plus LLM interpretation.
- A paywall of "free report, key locations locked"; credits sold per use that never expire, with no subscription, suited to low-frequency, high-ticket demand.
- Packaging a gray-area demand in a scientific tone, stating data sources openly and adding legal disclaimers both passes review and lowers user suspicion.
- Port the same app to other markets with strong treasure-hunting culture (Arabic-speaking regions, Iran, the Balkans, South Africa, Latin America). VeldScan has already done the English-speaking market.
9. Uncertain
- Paid acquisition: no ad library evidence; engagement on the FB page is only an indirect signal. Whether installs come mainly from store search or Meta ads is unverified.
- Revenue: the actual revenue behind TR TOOLS Top Grossing ranks 30 has not been estimated; the conversion rate is unknown.
- Retention and reputation: too few ratings; one-star reviews say "can't find anything on site", and refunds or bad reviews could drag on future performance.
- Compliance risk: the stores may treat it as misleading functionality and delist it, and Turkish authorities could link it to illegal excavation.
- The developer's identity comes only from the iOS seller name Kasim Yilmaz; background not checked.
