# A Turkish blogger livestreamed quitting smoking on Instagram; a month later she became co-founder of a quit-smoking app

**What it is** A Turkish quit-smoking app: live chat rooms sorted by quit stage, small games to play together, a forest where you plant a tree for each smoke-free day, plus an AI coach; the community and coach are locked behind a subscription.

**Why it took off** The blogger Şevval Dönmez started posting "day N of quitting" on Instagram in Aug 1; after the app launched she became co-founder, and the viewers who followed her quit became the first people in the rooms. Add Facebook ads on the "one pack a day, 47,450 thousand lira a year" math and Turkey's steadily rising cigarette prices.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't just build a day counter; in a non-English market with high smoking rates and rising cigarette prices, find a local blogger who is publicly quitting and whose comments fill with people tracking their days, make her your partner, give her audience stage-sorted rooms, and run ads around the money-saved math. The paywall should be softer than theirs.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and can be repeated in other countries, and few people know about it; but it has only 2,400 Android installs, its revenue is not visible, its growth depends on a blogger others can't access, community products turn into empty rooms and mixed-up people when they're small, and the quit-smoking category itself is crowded with million-user incumbents. Not many people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-31 · 11-03 installs 2,371

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-03 (6 days, 6 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Freewill is a quit-smoking app made by Turks, launched in late August; by early November it had about 2,400 installs on Google Play, 90 ratings on the iOS Turkey store, and stayed on Turkey's health category free chart at 40–60. It isn't another counter; it's "being in the same room as people quitting the same day." The first people came not from the product itself but from a 16k-follower blogger's own quitting diary. Scale is still small, but the playbook is clear and others can copy it.

### A "day 1" video

In Aug 1, 2026, Turkish Instagram blogger Şevval Dönmez (@bensevvald) posted a reel titled "Hayatımı Değiştiriyorum: Gün 1" (I'm changing my life: Day 1), with the caption "Keşke #reklam olsaydı" ("I wish this were an ad"); the full version is on YouTube. Her profile bio reads "solo camping, wilderness survival, history, feminism, quitting smoking, depression and kung fu," with about 16k followers.

She posts one a day from there. Her Aug 21 video opens with "I'm unemployed, and I'm quitting smoking." At the end of October, a stranger posted that one of her videos had shown up in their feed, and they watched it, then went back and caught up on all the earlier ones. "Going through the same struggle in different places, with people I've never met, it feels good," they wrote. Then they made themselves a coffee, went out on the balcony, and started filming their own quit-smoking diary.

Freewill hit the App Store on Aug 27 and Google Play on Aug 31. By Sep 3, Şevval's captions read: "#reklam #işbirliği değil çünkü cofounder olduk" (not an ad, not a partnership, because we became cofounders). In mid-September she started "walking 200 km to quit smoking," and every episode tagged @freewillapp_tr. On Oct 18 she wrote: "We built a community where people support and look out for each other again. I'm proud of it."

A five-star Google Play review from Oct 5 spells out the path plainly: "Thanks Şevval, your quit-smoking journey inspired us too. I saw this app in her story and started using it."

### What it is

The store description's first line: "Quitting alone is hard. On Freewill, you're in the same room as people quitting the same day: when a craving hits, you write one line, and someone answers."

- **Rooms by stage** : preparation, week one, week two, weeks 3–4, second month, veterans. There are also dedicated "craving attack" rooms, voice rooms, rooms you create yourself, plus small games and battles to play together. Messages can be translated with one tap.

- **A forest that grows with you** : every smoke-free day plants a tree, every month unlocks an island, and coins earned buy new tree species, seasons and skies. The mechanic is clearly borrowed from the focus app Forest.

- **An AI coach that knows your progress** .

- **Freewill Cafe** : only people who have subscribed to Pro and stayed smoke-free for two straight months get in. Inside are DMs, self-created rooms, voice and games (official Instagram, late September).

The free version keeps only the counter and the forest. Community, coach and the forest shop sit behind Pro, sold as monthly, quarterly or yearly subscriptions; on Play, individual in-app purchases run $9.99–149.80.

The company behind it is Araz Labs Ltd, registered in England in March 2026. Its sole director, Bahadır Araz, is a Turkish developer who was a senior developer at a Turkish conglomerate; since August of this year he has run his own company full time, alongside an Etsy listing tool and an AI coding IDE. A UK company, a Turkish founder, a Turkish market.

### How big the numbers are

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Google Play installs | 1,649(10-29) → 2,371(11-03), 6 days +722, single day 0–361 |
| Google Play rating | 4.7,22 reviews (Turkish store page, 11-06) |
| iOS ratings | 90 in the Turkey store, 4.33 rating; 2 in the US store (iTunes, 11-06) |
| iOS rating growth | Turkey store 63 (10-28) → 88 (11-06) |
| iOS charts | Turkey Health & Fitness Top Free rank 41–57 (10-28 to 11-06) |
| Version | 3.4.1 in two months, updated every few days since late October |

Nearly all users are in Turkey. A couple hundred Android installs a day is a solid start for a two-month-old health app, but still far from breaking out. Revenue is not public.

### Where users come from

**The creator herself.** This is the biggest factor. Şevval's quit-smoking diary started almost a month before the app launched. Viewers first followed her quitting, and once the app was out it became "her app." Her comments are full of people quitting who post their day counts: "Day 5 and the cravings are brutal" "Day 28 of quitting" "I decided to quit today and then I saw your video." These people already wanted a place to check in together, and Freewill gave them one.

**Facebook video ads.** Freewill's Facebook page has no custom username and reads as a pure ad-buying page. Its videos do the math outright: "Günde 1 paket, yılda 47.450 TL ediyor" (one pack a day, 47,450 lira a year), "every smoke-free day plants a tree in your Freewill forest." How much was spent is not visible from outside, but an iOS one-star review from Sep 23 reads "Reklam güzel, uygulama yanlış" (the ad is nice, the app is wrong), which confirms the ads are running and people are clicking through.

**Cigarette prices keep rising.** Over 2026 10–November, Turkish cigarette prices were raised again and again, with a pack reaching 87–140 lira (Turkish media 10-31, 11-04). The "how much you'd save in a year" math hurts more with every increase.

**The store listing.** The Turkey iOS subtitle reads "#1 Sigara Bırakma Uygulaması" (the number one quit-smoking app), and ranking 40–60 on the charts itself brings organic search traffic. The website freewill.health has pages in 10 languages comparing it head to head with QuitNow, Smoke Free and Kwit, laying groundwork for long-tail search. The US store has only 2 ratings, though, so that channel hasn't kicked in yet.

**Not found** : the official TikTok account has 0 posts; X, Reddit and the media aren't discussing it.

### What users said

Positive reviews are almost all about the community:

> "Everyone in the community is cheering each other on, and the new games are great, we can play together." (iOS, 10-18) "Out of all these apps, the only one that actually helped me." (iOS, 9-29) "The chat rooms are well organized, and building the forest is really motivating." (Google Play, 9-04)

Negative reviews are almost all about the paywall:

> "Without Pro it does nothing. It pushes Pro everywhere you tap. My trees, my forest, none of them open without Pro." (iOS, 10-04) "As an app nobody has heard of, nothing keeps you here after you download it. Every tap shows 'Upgrade to Pro,' which only makes people cool off." (iOS, 9-23)

One one-star review points to the other side of a community product: "The place is packed with messed-up people, and it makes you so discouraged you can't even quit smoking." (iOS, 10-24) Under Şevval's comments, someone also asked: "Just downloaded the app, I tried to post in the 300-person lobby and couldn't." Most likely free users can't post (inference).

A hard paywall also shows it has been serious about making money from day one. In replies to negative reviews, the developer's line is that these features carry server costs every day.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Launched | Scale (Google Play installs) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quit Tracker(despDev) | 2016 | 6.28M | Pure counters and stats, no community |
| QuitNow! | 2010 | 5.12M, has a Turkish-language website | Has chat, but one big lobby; Freewill splits rooms by stage |
| Smoke Free | 2013 | 3.41M, a prescription version exists in Germany | Leans on evidence-based courses; chat sits in a paid expert plan |
| QuitSure | 2020 | 2.26M | Course-based with an end date |
| Kwit | 2012 | 1.75M, 7,800 ratings on the Turkey iOS store | Gamification for one person |
| Flamy | 2018 | 1.36M | Only with friends you invite yourself |
| The official Turkish "Bırakabilirsin" | — | Endorsed by the health ministry | Free, informational, hotline-focused |
| A wave of indie Turkish launches in 2026 (Last Drag, Sigara Savar, Sabri, Puffie and 20 more) | From ¥2025-08 | Up to about 7,800 | Almost all are counters |

Quitting smoking is an old, crowded category; the leaders are ten-year-old products with millions of installs. But among the twenty-plus local newcomers that appeared in Turkey in 2026, Freewill ranks first on iOS ratings (88, versus 54 for second-place Last Drag), and it is the only one running a live community. So far I haven't seen anyone copy its "stage rooms + forest + creator partnership" package.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** Don't build the N-th quit-smoking counter. What's worth learning is the combination: partner with a local creator who is quitting in public and already has a crowd of fellow quitters, give that crowd a room split by stage, and lock the rooms behind a subscription.

**Who it suits:** indie developers who can run live chat and community operations well, who understand a non-English market with high smoking rates and rising cigarette prices but no serious local community-style quit app (Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and similar), and who can find and sign a local creator.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone without a creator who plans to cold-start on ads or ASO alone; an empty community room hurts more than having no community at all. Also not for people unwilling to moderate content, since the "messed-up people" complaint has already appeared.

**How to do it:**

- Find the person first, then write the code. Look for a creator filming a "day N of quitting" series whose comments have people counting days along with them, and offer equity rather than a promotion fee. Her audience is the first group of people in the rooms.

- Build the product on the same skeleton: stage rooms, people who answer during a craving attack, a forest that grows, and premium rooms that reward only those who stay smoke-free.

- Don't copy its paywall that hard. Free users need to be able to talk in at least one room, or the people you bring in leave on day one and leave bad reviews.

- Use "how much you save in a year" in local currency as ad creative, and run a new round every time cigarette prices go up.

**How to acquire users:** the creator's ongoing diary is the main engine, with the app linked in every episode; Facebook and Instagram video ads run the savings math; the store subtitle claims the local-language "quit smoking" keyword.

**When to get in early:** quitting smoking is year-round demand with no hard window. But once someone in a country establishes the "creator + community" approach, latecomers struggle to pull people into a second room. The months when a country raises cigarette taxes are the best time to launch.

**Signs you've got it wrong:** installs drop off as soon as the creator's series stops, meaning it was one-time fan traffic rather than a product; the number of people talking in the rooms every day stays at a few dozen; or after three months no paying user is willing to leave a review. If any of these happen, stop spending more.

## Why Freewill: Quit Smoking (com.arazlabs.freewill) is breaking through

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our googleplay / appstore databases (Play from 2026-10-29, iOS from 2026-10-28), store pages, the official site, Jina search, TikHub, x-radar. Anything we couldn't verify is marked "unverified".

### Bottom line

It's a quit-smoking app **built by an indie developer in Turkey** that cold-started on **the Turkish market + native-language marketing (Turkish content on Instagram/YouTube/Facebook, the founder on camera) + the store subtitle "#1 Sigara Bırakma Uygulaması"** . Its product edge over the established quit-smoking apps (QuitNow / Smoke Free / Kwit) is **live chat rooms split by quitting stage + mini-games you play together + a forest where you plant a tree every day** , turning a counter into a community. But it's still small: about 2.4k Play installs and 88–90 iOS ratings in the Turkish store. **It hasn't broken out yet** . It's a promising new app in the Turkish store.

### Data (how big it is now)

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Play installs | 1,649(10-29) → 2,371(11-03), +722 in 6 days, 0–361 per day | googleplay library app_day |
| Play rating | 4.7 / 22 reviews, "1 B+ İndirme" | Play Turkish store page (read via Jina, 2026-11-06) |
| iOS ratings | Turkey 90 / 4.33; US 2; UK 0 | iTunes lookup(tr/us/gb) |
| iOS rating growth | Turkey 63(10-28) → 88(11-06), +25 in 9 days | appstore library app_day |
| iOS charts | Turkey Health & Fitness free chart 41 → 57 → 51, stuck around #40–60; occasionally squeezes into the Belarus / Poland / Russia category charts at #180–200 | appstore library |
| Launched | iOS 2026-08-27;Play 2026-08-31 | iTunes / data card |
| In-app purchases | Play $9.99–$149.80; Pro has monthly / quarterly / yearly subscriptions | Data card, official site FAQ |
| Release cadence | iOS hit 3.4.1 within two months (at 10-28 it was 3.2.1,10-30 3.3,10-31 3.4) | appstore database / iTunes |

**Judgment** : users are almost all in Turkey. 88+ of the 90 iOS ratings are in the TR store; the Play page is written mainly in Turkish. 100–300 new Android installs a day is a solid cold start for a health app, but it's still far from "broken out".

### Company and team

- Registered entity **Araz Labs Ltd** , incorporated in England, company no. 17116519,2026-03-25, sole director Bahadır Araz; also building Sellibra, an Etsy listing tool, and "Nova IDE", an agentic IDE (arazlabs.com/en/company; Companies House).

- Bahadır Araz is Turkish (Turkish LinkedIn: Dokuz Eylül University; formerly senior developer at Ahlatcı Holding, consultant at Anadolu Ajansı; full-time on Araz Labs since 2026-08; GitHub bahadiraraz, Instagram 306 followers). So it's **a UK shell, a Turkish founder, and a Turkish market** .

- The "Freewillhealth LLP" named in the data card couldn't be verified; the official site and company page both say Araz Labs Ltd.

### Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay database / appstore database) | How it differs from Freewill |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Smoke Free(23 Ltd / David Crane) | iOS/Android | 2013/2014 | 3.41M installs; UK iOS 26.5k ratings; Germany also has a prescription version under DiGA | Chat is in the paid expert plan; leans behavioral science / evidence-based |

| Flamy | iOS/Android | 2018 | 1.36M installs | Only with friends you invite; Freewill puts strangers into stage-based rooms |
| NHS Quit Smoking / Turkey's Yeşilay "Bırakabilirsin" | Government / nonprofit | 2013 / — | NHS 490k installs; Yeşilay backed by the Ministry of Health and a 115 hotline | Free, official, info-focused; no gamification or community |
| A wave of Turkish indie peers (Sigara Savar, Stop Smoking: Quit Tracker by Şükrü Taşkıran , Last Drag, Sabri, Puffie, Ashward, Zero Smoke, Nefes, Dumora, Sigarasız Günler…) | iOS/Android | Still shipping since 2025-08 through 2026-10-28 | The biggest on Play are 7.8k / 6.6k installs; TR iOS ratings 0–54 | Almost all are counters / trackers; Freewill is the only one with a live community + forest + AI coach, and it has the most ratings |
| Forest (Seekrtech, a focus app) | iOS/Android | 2014 | Top focus apps | The visual prototype for "planting a tree as progress" comes from here, but it isn't a quit-smoking app |

**Finding** : the quit-smoking category is old and crowded. The leaders are 2010–2018 years old with installs in the millions. In 2026 a wave of quit-smoking counters from Turkish indie developers appeared (searching by name in the Turkish store of the appstore database turned up 20+ released in the past 2026 years). Freewill ranks first in that wave (TR rating 88; behind it Last Drag 54, Sabri 22, Puffie 15), but it's still two or three orders of magnitude behind the established players.

### Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **Turkish-market native, Turkish-language ops (confirmed)** : iOS ratings come almost entirely from the TR store; the store title is localized to "Freewill: Sigarayı Bırak"; the website has a full Turkish version at /tr, and screenshot prices use ₺ (save 3,900 ₺ in 30 days).

2. **Turkish-language content on Instagram / Facebook / YouTube (verified)** : Instagram @freewillapp_tr (bio: 'Sigarayı birlikte bırakıyoruz, Krizlerde birlikte oyun oynuyoruz'). One reel has a founder on camera opening with '#Reklam değildir! … Kuruculardan biri olarak' ('Not an ad! As one of the founders'). There's also a community event post: '100.000 SİGARA İÇMİYORUZ, BİRLİKTE BİR ORMAN KURUYORUZ'. The YouTube search snippet for @Freewillapp_tr shows 468 subscribers and 12 videos, including diary-style Shorts like 'Sigarayı bırakıyorum, gün 1' that link to freewill.health/indir. The TikTok @freewillapp_tr has only 3 followers and 0 posts (TikHub), so TikTok isn't a real channel.

3. **Facebook video ads (likely, spend not verified)** : The Facebook page 61593655845417 (no custom username, typical of an ad-running page) has posted sales-style videos: "Günde 1 paket, yılda 47.450 TL ediyor … Freewill ile bu masraftan kurtul" and "Sigarasız geçen her gün Freewill'de ormanına yeni bir ağaç ekliyor." The Meta Ad Library page couldn't be read (login / captcha required). Our metaads library only tracks products on our keyword list, and this one isn't in it.

4. **Riding Turkish cigarette price hikes (timing, partly confirmed)** : Turkish cigarette prices were raised repeatedly from 2026 10 through November, with a pack now costing 87–140 TL (milligazete 10-31, antalyahurses 11-04). The ad line "one pack a day, 47,450 TL a year" (about 130 TL per pack) is aimed directly at that pain point.

5. **Store ASO (confirmed)** : the iOS TR store subtitle reads "#1 Sigara Bırakma Uygulaması" ("#1 quit-smoking app"), and in the TR store's "Customers also bought" it sits next to other quit-smoking apps. Ranking 40–60 on the chart also brings in organic traffic on its own.

6. **SEO content site (confirmed, still early)** : freewill.health has landing pages in 10 languages, head-to-head comparison pages against QuitNow / Smoke Free / Kwit / Flamy / QuitSure (2026-10-19 verified competitor details), and guides citing WHO / CDC / NHS. It's building long-tail search, and the results aren't showing yet: the US iOS store has only 2 ratings.

7. **Friends and self-written reviews (signs of it)** : On iOS TR, 10-25 includes a five-star review signed "BAHADIRking" (the founder's name is Bahadır), and most early reviews are short praise. The developer replies to every review in 10-19 in a uniform way.

8. **Not found** : No Reddit, HN, X (0 x-radar posts), press coverage, or TrustMRR revenue posts.

### Why users come, why they stay, and why they pay

- **Why they come** : Smoking rates in Turkey are high and cigarette prices keep rising, so the math of "how many lira will I save by quitting" hurts. Native-language ads and content hit people directly.

- **Why they stay** : The positive reviews focus on the community ("Quitting together with people who want to quit, supporting each other", "chat kısmı harika" the chat section is great , "the only app out of all of them that works for me"). The negative reviews also point to the community ("it's full of weird people, which just discourages you").

- **Why they pay** : The community, AI coach, and forest shop are locked behind Pro. Negative reviews repeatedly mention "nothing works without Pro" and "Pro for everything," which suggests a hard paywall. The developer's reply is "these features have daily server costs." It monetizes social ties through the subscription; the Play in-app purchase tops out at $149.80 for one item, which points to a high-priced annual tier. No conversion data (unverified).

### Differentiation

- The core of the established products is a **counter + health timeline** . Freewill swaps the core for "**being in the same room with people quitting on the same day** ": rooms by stage (preparation / first week / second week / 3–4 weeks / second month / veterans), a dedicated "Craving" room, voice rooms, mini-games and battles with others, shared community goals ("smoke 100k fewer cigarettes together"), and one-tap translation of cross-language messages.

- On top of that, a **forest visualization** (one tree a day, one island a month, coins to buy seeds, borrowing Forest's mechanic) and **an AI coach that knows your progress** .

- **Is this why it broke out? Partly.** In a wave of similar counter-style launches in Turkey, the community plus forest is clearly why it has the most ratings and has stayed on the charts (the community is what reviewers mention most). But acquisition relies mainly on native social media and ads, and the differentiation is more about retention and payment. Community products at small scale risk "empty rooms" and "weird people," and negative reviews are already showing this.

### How visible it is

**Few people know about it yet** : No press coverage, no X / Reddit / HN discussion, no public revenue; it has some visibility only within Turkish Instagram / Facebook circles. Copycats: Turkey does have a wave of similar new products, but they're all counters, and **I haven't seen anyone copy its "community rooms + forest" combination yet** .

### What others can borrow

1. Pick a **non-English market with high smoking rates, fast-rising cigarette prices, and no good local product** , use the native language to sell the "savings math," then collect global subscriptions through a UK company.

2. Turn a solo tool into **stage-grouped companion rooms** : peer support is the product, and it's the justification for the paywall.

3. **Visualize streak days as something that grows** (trees / islands), which makes people less willing to break them than a number would.
