Same Vietnamese developer: QR code scanner got 7.22M installs in 80 days, AI portrait only 280k in 78 days
What it is A free, ad-supported Android AI portrait app: pick a template to generate a portrait, plus aging, gender swap, future baby, couple hug, old photo restoration, and object removal.
Why it took off The category is hot, and the developer had ready-made templates and a paid-acquisition habit. A wave of installs landed from late September to mid October (most likely paid ads or cross-promotion from an older app; no direct evidence found), which pushed it up the low-price photography charts. Since then, store search and similar-app recommendations have driven three to four thousand installs a day.
DHow you could follow this You don't need to chase this app itself. If you really want to build an AI photo product, start from the specific needs in the reviews: for example, only ethnic costume and wedding photos for South Asian or West African users, a store listing in the local language, and a small-budget test in cheap countries. Or apply the same playbook to tools everyone needs, like QR codes or photo restoration.

Artcifix: AI Art Photo, Image is a template-style AI portrait app published in August 20 by a Vietnamese developer account called "Wolf Kan" from Vinh Long province. A wave of installs landed in late September, at one point it reached the top 10,11-06 of the UAE photography free chart, and it has about 282k total installs and now three to four thousand a day. Sounds decent, but the same developer's QR code scanner, published two days earlier, already has 7.22M installs. Compared with other AI portrait apps in the same wave, it also sits near the bottom. For anyone thinking of following, the value of this piece isn't the app itself. It shows how crowded this category has become in the second half of 2026.
A five-star review that says "Balochi clothing"
On Oct 10, a user named Mah Baloch left a five-star review on its Google Play page with a single line of text:
"Balochi dressing photo editing"
14 people marked it helpful, making it the second most helpful review. The most helpful one, from Sep 13, says "So many ad" (too many ads) and got 21 helpful votes, back when it hadn't yet picked up traction.
Going through the latest hundred English reviews shows who installs it: "Manzoor Ranjha Jutt", "Sardar sabeel", "Kafayat ali Dahri", "محمد صالح سومرو". These names most likely come from Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. "a wanke hoton" and "sahabee malele garina allah yabarmu zaman lafiya" look like Hausa from northern Nigeria (inference). Quite a few people just typed their own name in the review box. Others wrote "I want to make a couple photo", "I want to make an AI video", "I want to make my own music" (Google Play reviews, 9-18 to 11-04).
These are the first phone users in low-price markets to use AI photo editing, and what they want is concrete: themselves in ethnic costume, couple photos, and videos. These users are willing to install but not to pay, so the app can only make money from ads.
What it is
A free app that bundles the most common AI photo tricks on Google Play from the past 2026 years: pick a theme template (football, summer, luxury, anime) to generate a portrait, plus aging, gender swap, "future baby", "couple hug", old photo restoration, and object removal. No in-app purchases, labeled "Contains ads", rated Mature 17+ (sexual content, nudity), probably because of templates like the couple hug or user-uploaded images (inference). 11-06 rating from 3.9,2,943 ratings (Google Play listing).
The listing, the privacy policy (a Google Doc), the support site (a blogspot), and the support email (a Gmail address) all match the same setup used by this developer's other apps.
How it grew
| Timeline | Total installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 9-15 | About 7k | Four weeks after launch |
| 9-24 | About 56k | Started ramping up, about +7k that day |
| 9-25 | Reached the top 10 of the UAE photography free chart; 9-27 peaked at #185 on the overall UAE chart | |
| 10-03, 10-04 | About 151k | About +65k over two days, passing 100k |
| 10-13 | About 220k | This wave ended |
| 10-27 | About 251k | Dropped back to two or three thousand a day |
| 11-06 | 282k | +31k in the last 7 days |
Source: before 10-28, figures are estimates from third-party data sites AppstoreSpy and AppInsider; after that, daily Google Play observations.
It gained over 160k in three weeks, then fell back as if someone shut off a tap. This is the classic curve of "run one ad push, then stop once the math works" (inference). Its charting countries were the UAE, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia, all places where installs are cheap. 11-06 it hit #30 on Nigeria's photography free chart, #40 in the UAE, #66 in Saudi Arabia, and #81 in Malaysia, and it never made the overall or Top Grossing charts.
Where users come from: unclear, but not organic
One thing is certain: the long tail of three to four thousand installs a day now comes from store search and "similar apps" recommendations. Its title is stuffed with AI Art, Photo, and Image, and AppInsider recorded it appearing in the similar-app recommendations of several competing apps starting 11-01.
There's no direct evidence for where that surge came from:
- Paid ads (most likely, unconfirmed): Google's Ads Transparency Center returns no advertiser when searching by developer name, company name, or app name (11-06). On Facebook there's an "Artcifix: AI Art Photo, Image" page created 2026 years ago that has never posted. Empty pages like this are often used to run app install ads, but no creatives were found. The same developer's Photo Recovery app has a year of Google ad records on the third-party ad monitor BigSpy, showing this developer does buy ads.
- Cross-promo (likely, unconfirmed): the same developer's Beauty Camera Sweet Makeup App has 19.6M installs, and 11-06 it charted #4 in the Nigeria Photo & Video free chart. Its charting countries overlap heavily with Artcifix. Putting a "More apps" section or interstitials promoting new releases inside an older app is a standard move for developers like this.
- Creators and influencers: none. Searching its name on TikTok turns up no videos. On X there were 0 posts in the past 90 days, and online it only appears in auto-generated pages from download sites and app analytics sites.
Where the money comes from: ads, and not much of them
No subscriptions and no in-app purchases. The third-party data site AppGoblin labels it "ads 100%" and estimates monthly revenue under $10k with about 28k monthly active users (estimate). The most helpful review is "So many ad". 280k installs produced only 28k monthly actives, and few people stuck around. Its users are mainly in Pakistan and northern Nigeria, where ad rates are very low, so each impression earns little (inference).
Looking at its own developer's catalog, this trend bet lost
Wolf Kan has 7 apps on Google Play. Here are the 11-06 numbers:
| App | Launched | Total installs | past 7 days | Monetization |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beauty Camera Sweet Makeup App | 2025-12 | 19.6M | +91k | Ads + in-app purchases |
| Photo Recovery & File Recovery | 2026-05-26 | 10.6M | +36k | Ads + in-app purchases ($4.99–69.99) |
| QR Code Scanner & QR Generator | 2026-08-18 | 7.22M | +50k | Ads + in-app purchases |
| Artcifix: AI Art Photo, Image | 2026-08-20 | 282k | +31k | Ads only |
| Educa: AI Language Practice | 2026-09-06 | 34k | Ads only | |
| CreaPDF, Universal TV Remote |
Source: Google Play listings and install counts, 11-06.
The QR code scanner was published two days before Artcifix and has 7.22M installs in 80 days, 25 times its install count. Same person, same templates, same paid-acquisition habit: the most boring utility did best, and the hottest AI portrait app did worst. The reason isn't hard to guess. Needs like QR codes and photo recovery exist everywhere in the world, and the competitors are older apps. AI portraits, meanwhile, have a dozen new listings this month all fighting for the same users.
Who it's competing with
11-06 阿联酋摄影免费榜前 40 里,有十几款 2026 年才上架的同类 AI 写真 App。几个直接对手:
| Competitors | Launched | Cumulative installs (11-06) | past 7 days | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muselab AI | 2026-04 | 5.36M | +920k | Top of the same category, #1 on Germany's photography chart |
| AI Face Aging(Willson Studio) | 2026-02 | 7.13M | +570k | Does only the "aging" feature |
| AI Art Magic - Photo Creator(SSon Studio) | 2026-05 | 3.1M | +500k | Same template-portrait formula, #1 on the UAE photography chart |
| AI Photo Studio: Art Magic(FunPrank) | 2026-08-07 | 3.85M | +250k | Published two weeks earlier, nearly identical features |
| AI Photo Editor: Art Studio(Leilani Rogers) | 2026-09-09 | 1.83M | +250k | Published three weeks later, growing 8 times faster than it |
| Remini, Picsart, Hypic, FaceApp | 2011–2019 | 100M+ | Real products that sell subscriptions | |
| Gemini, ChatGPT image generation | 2025 | Hundreds of millions of users | Makes the same effect for free with one sentence |
Its weekly gain runs 5 to 30 times that of same-period, same-type apps. FunPrank, SSon Studio and Leilani Rogers look like one studio buying heavily on Meta (inferred). Mid-October saw another wave of new apps, all with "future baby + gender swap" in their listings. Artcifix has nothing of its own in features, pricing or channels. It's simply a later, smaller follower.
If it were you
Bottom line: Skip this one. The AI photo-template niche is already held by a few developers who buy at scale. A late entrant that ran one burst of ads and relied only on paid installs is where Artcifix is now.
Who it's for: If you already monetize Android with ads, run several developer accounts and know how to buy installs, the useful takeaway is different: chart entry is cheap in low-price storefronts. A weekly gain of 30K is enough to reach the top 30 in Nigeria's Photography chart and the top 40 in the UAE. You can use that to test whether a category has volume for little money. The same playbook on "boring but everyone needs it" tools like QR codes or photo recovery pays off far better than chasing AI hype.
Who it's not for: Solo developers with one account, anyone who can't buy installs and wants to rely on organic store traffic, and anyone hoping to build word of mouth. Nothing in this category grew organically.
How to do it: If you still want to try AI photos, drop the "a bit of everything" template bundles. Start from the specific needs in the reviews: people asking for Balochi outfit photos, couple photos, video. An app that only does South Asian or West African traditional outfits and wedding photos, with templates in local dress and settings and a store listing written in Urdu or Hausa, should rank much more easily in languages the big players ignore (inferred). Monetize with ads as before, and test in one country first.
How to get users: Store search and similar-app recommendations are the free part. Write the title and description in the local language with clear terms like "XX outfit photos" and "wedding photos". To get volume you still need a paid push. Test with a small budget in cheap markets like Pakistan or Nigeria, and work out the cost per install against ad revenue.
Timing: This type of app rides each new wave of generative image models and turns over every few months. If you test it, finish before year-end.
Signs you've read this wrong: ① Artcifix or similar apps chart steadily in high-price countries beyond Pakistan and Nigeria, which would mean ad revenue in this category is higher than assumed. ② Wolf Kan stops shipping new AI photo apps and keeps going with utility tools, which would confirm that proven demand beats hype. ③ Gemini or Meta AI launches one-tap template photos directly inside WhatsApp or Facebook. Users in these low-price markets already live in WhatsApp, and that would leave no room for template apps.

Artcifix: AI Art Photo, Image (com.artcifix.aiart.generator.aiphoto): why it grew
Channel: Google Play / Developer: Wolf Kan (registered to TRAN KIM HUNG, Vinh Long Province, Vietnam) / Listed: 2026-08-20 / Research date: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This isn't an app that grew on its product. A Vietnamese individual developer account, "Wolf Kan" (which makes ad-monetized utility apps such as beauty cameras, photo recovery, QR codes, PDF tools and TV remotes, 5 apps in the library with 37.8M installs combined), built this on the template-style AI photo format that was the hottest on Play for 2026 years. It had one concentrated surge in late September, pushing into the top 10 on the UAE Photography free chart. Then it settled back to 3–4 thousand installs a day. Pure ad monetization, no in-app purchases. Among its peers it's a small one: competitors on the same chart mostly grew 5–30× faster per week.
1. Data: how big it is and how it grew
- Total installs 282,033, +30,746 over the last 7 days; rating from 2,943 reviews, adding 38~64 a day (googleplay library app_profile / app_day, 2026-11-06).
- Install curve since launch (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates):
- 9-15 about 7 thousand; 9-18 about 21k; 9-24 about 56k (that day about +7.4 thousand)
- 10-01 about 80k → 10-04 about 151k (10-03 and 10-04 combined about +65k) → 10-08 about 183k → 10-13 about 220k
- After 10-14 it slowed: 10-27 about 251k, 11-06 about 282k, averaging about 3 thousand a day
- Takeaway: between 9-24 and 10-13 there was one concentrated push, rising from about 56k to about 220k in three weeks. No further push after that; it settled into a long tail.
- Charts (googleplay library chart_rank, 10-29~11-06): it only appeared on Photography free charts, including UAE 26–45, Nigeria 30–85, Saudi Arabia 63–103, Malaysia 51–88,11-06, and Thailand #196. It never reached any overall or Top Grossing chart. AppInsider records: 9-25 entered the UAE Photography free chart top 10,9-27, its best overall UAE rank was #185, and in the same period it reached the top 100,10-03 of the Photography charts in Germany, France, the UK and Indonesia, with 100k installs (https://appinsider.io/android/app/com.artcifix.aiart.generator.aiphoto).
- Monetization: free, offers_iap = False, ad_supported = True (googleplay library app_snap). AppGoblin tags it "IAP 0% · Ad 100%", estimates monthly revenue under $10K and MAU around 28k (https://www.appgoblin.info/apps/com.artcifix.aiart.generator.aiphoto/data-flows). AppGazers' model estimates in-app purchase revenue under $5K/month (https://appgazers.com/reports/developers/android-Wolf+Kan). So it makes money from ads, and subscription revenue is essentially nil.
- Who the users are: the 3 most-helpful reviews visible are all from South Asian names: "So many ad" (Ganesh Mesta, 21 people found it helpful), "Balochi dressing photo editing" (Mah Baloch), "I want to create a good ai videos" (Usmman Hamza) (Play store page). Our chart library doesn't track Pakistan or Bangladesh, so the main market may fall entirely outside the 30 storefronts we monitor (unverified).
- How much to trust the rating: written_reviews in the library = 0. The rating distribution is scaled up proportionally from a sample of about 14 reviews (the 1-star and 2-star counts are always equal, and the 3-star count is 0), with the score stuck at 3.93. No sign of fake positive reviews, but real reviews are few, so the rating is only a rough proxy for downloads.
- Rating: Play labels it Mature 17+ (Sexual Content, Nudity). Possibly tied to couple templates like "Lovers Hug" or user-generated content.
2. Competitors: who else does the same thing
"Upload a selfie → pick a template → AI photo / aging / gender swap / future baby / restore old photos" is one of the most crowded niches in Play Photography over the past 2026 years. 11-06 of the top 40 on the UAE Photography free chart are 2026-year-old AI photo apps of the same type (googleplay library v_chart).
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-06) | How Artcifix differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Art Magic - Photo Creator(SSon Studio) | Android | 2026-05-17 | 3.1M installs, weekly +500k, #1 in UAE Photography | Same template-photo playbook; ad spend about 16× its size |
| AI Photo Generator: Muselab AI(Shotcut Video Workshop) | Android | 2026-04-10 | 5.36M, +920k a week | Head newcomer in the same niche, #1 in German Photography |
| AI Photo Editor: Art Studio(Leilani Rogers) | Android | 2026-09-09 | 1.83M, +250k a week | Launched 3 weeks later with the same future-baby / gender-swap features, growing 8× as fast |
| AI Photo Studio: Art Magic(FunPrank) | Android | 2026-08-07 | 3.85M, +250k a week | Launched in the same period with the same features, 14× its size |
| AI Face Aging - Photo Editor(Willson Studio) | Android | 2026-02-03 | 7.13M, +570k a week | Only does the "aging" feature, and goes deeper on it |
| Lumpix / Flixart / GenFoto / AI Image & Art Generator, etc. | Android | 2026-06~08 | 50k~1.5M | Small template AI-photo apps from the same wave, mostly from tool developers in Vietnam and India |
| Remini(Bending Spoons) | Android/iOS | 2019 | 620M, +830k a week | Subscription monetization, strong brand; Artcifix is free and ad-based |
| Hypic (ByteDance) / Picsart / Photo Lab | Android/iOS | 2011–2023 | 130M~1.4B | Big full-featured photo editors; AI photos are just one feature |
| FaceApp / Reface | Android/iOS | 2017/2019 | Reface 150M | The originator of aging, gender-swap and face-swap features |
| Gemini (Nano Banana) / ChatGPT image generation | Big-company features | 2025 | Hundreds of millions | A prompt gets the same result for free. Template apps sell "one-tap generation for people who don't know how to write prompts" |
Verdict: competition is intense. Nothing visible sets Artcifix apart in features, pricing or channels.
3. Growth: where users come from
- Short-term paid acquisition (highly likely, not directly confirmed): from 9-24 to 10-13 it grew over 160k in three weeks, then fell off a cliff into a long tail. The classic curve of "run a UAC/Meta push, collect ROI, stop". It only hit the top of the Photo chart in low-price markets like the Middle East, Nigeria and Malaysia, which also fits paid acquisition's geographic pattern. But googleads and metaads didn't track it. Google Ads Transparency Center returns no advertiser under "Wolf Kan", "TRAN KIM HUNG" or "Artcifix" (2026-11-06 checked), so if it ran ads, it may have used another account or an agency account. On Facebook there's a "Artcifix: AI Art Photo, Image" page created 2026 years ago that has never posted (https://www.facebook.com/p/Artcifix-AI-Art-Photo-Image-61595146754380/). Empty pages like this are often used to run Meta app ads, but we saw no actual creatives. BigSpy shows the same developer's other app, Photo Recovery, ran Google ads (2025-11-07 ~ 2026-11-01, bigspy.com/tools/google-ad-library-tool-app), so this developer does buy traffic.
- Cross-promotion from the same developer (possible, unconfirmed): the same developer's Beauty Camera Sweet Makeup App has 19.6M installs, and ranked #4 on the Nigeria Photo free chart (11-06). Artcifix's chart-topping markets (Nigeria, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia) overlap heavily with where Beauty Camera charts. Developers like this often run interstitials or "more apps" cross-promo inside their own apps, but we have no direct evidence.
- Play Store search / similar-app recommendations: the title is stuffed with keywords (AI Art, Photo, Image), and the description repeats AI Photo Enhancer, Gender Swap, Future Baby. AppInsider logged it appearing in the similar-app recommendations of peers like "AI Photo Studio: Art Magic" and "AI Photo Generator: Art & Face" from 11-01. The roughly 3 thousand daily installs in the long tail probably come from here.
- Content and creators: none. Searching "Artcifix" on TikTok returns no relevant videos (TikHub). On X there were 0 posts in 90 days (x-radar). Online there are only auto-generated aggregator pages like AppBrain, Softonic, CNET's download site and AppGoblin.
IV. Why it took off
- Category heat: in 2026 the "AI portrait template" category as a whole was booming on Play. A dozen-plus new apps in the same chart each added hundreds of thousands a week. The low-price-market Photo charts have a low bar: 30k weekly growth is enough to land #30 in Nigeria and #40 in the UAE (googleplay database).
- Copy-paste pipeline from an experienced developer: Wolf Kan has 7 apps with about 40M installs total (AppBrain, AppGazers), all ad-monetized tools and camera apps. Artcifix is another one they built to ride a hot category. The package name, store copy, privacy policy (Google Docs) and support site (blogspot) all follow the same template.
- One concentrated push: a wave from late September to mid October pushed it into the top 10 Photo chart in the UAE and past the 100k install threshold. After that it sustained itself on the long tail.
- Pure ad monetization, low barrier: no subscription paywall, so users can use it free. That brings in a lot of installs from low-price markets, which ads then monetize. But the top-voted review is "So many ads".
5. Differentiation
Basically none. The features are standard for the category (theme templates, trending gallery, aging, gender swap, future baby, couple hug, quality enhancement, object removal), and the pricing is free with ads, indistinguishable from most similar apps from Vietnam and India. It went up on "hot category + developers copy each other + one paid push", not on differentiation. And compared with its same-period peers it did poorly, sitting toward the tail of the wave.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: very few people know about it. No media, no X, no TikTok, no public revenue disclosure, only auto-generated pages on third-party app data sites.
- Copycats: it is itself a copycat. The category kept adding new apps after it, such as "AI Photo Effects: Art Filters" by Leilani Rogers (9-09) and by Gladys Bishop (10-18), and one by INFINITE HILLS (10-11), all with the same future baby + gender swap combo in their descriptions (googleplay database).
VII. What to take away
- The Photo category chart in low-price markets has a low barrier: a few tens of thousands of weekly growth can get you into the top 40 charts in the Middle East and Africa, so it's a cheap way to test a category.
- The app-matrix play: one developer account batch-produces apps around trends, uses an existing high-traffic app (a beauty camera) to funnel users to new products, then uses a one-time push to get the new product past the 100k install and chart thresholds.
- But this category has a low ceiling for ad revenue and heavy copycat competition. AppGoblin estimates monthly revenue at under $10K. The takeaway is mainly the method, not the product category itself.
VIII. Unknowns
- Whether the 9-24~10-13 surge came from Google UAC, Meta, or cross-promo from the developer's own apps: we have no creative evidence.
- Main user countries: the reviews look like South Asia (Pakistan, India), but our charts don't cover Pakistan or Bangladesh.
- Ad revenue and ROI are unknown. The figures on the Peekly page are blurred placeholders shown only after login, so we didn't use them.
- The relationship between developer account "Wolf Kan" and Vietnam's "Nam Huong Corp" (a Ho Chi Minh City media company): only the email and site name match. Not verified.
