An "AI portrait" app called ArtiDream is actually a skin for a Chinese character-chat platform: 69k installs in three months, then it starts to fade

What it is An AI character roleplay chat app. As you chat, you can generate character portraits with one tap, with 17+ borderline-explicit content. Behind it is the same backend from the Chinese team PlayRole.ai, in a new skin.

Why it took off The backend was ready-made, and it stopped updating a month after launch. The volume was bought in batches (inferred), with no charts and no organic content. 17+ characters plus high-priced in-app purchases let each install earn back about $1, so paid acquisition paid for itself. From late October, daily installs have dropped from 700–800 to 100–200.

CHow you could follow it Don't copy this app; it has no product-level opportunity. If you already have an AI chat or image app that monetizes, you can learn its distribution: reuse the same backend in a new skin, change the category and selling point, and launch several packages. Test each with a small budget until it pays back, then scale.

Grade C: the product has no differentiation. The category's top players have tens of millions of installs with heavy spend, and this app has already peaked. The app-matrix method it uses relies on a ready-made backend, ad budget and the ability to survive account bans, so starting from scratch to copy it isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Take a ready-made AI character-chat backend, re-skin it, rename it, put it in a different category, list it under a newly registered Hong Kong company, spend money to flood it with installs, then earn the money back with 17+ characters and in-app purchases of up to $99.99. ArtiDream AI has been live for over three months, with 68,656 Google Play installs (11-05), has never charted, and third-party estimates put its October in-app revenue between $10k and $50k. It isn't a product that took off. It's one account in an app matrix that got its run. Below: who it is, where the users and money came from, and what you can take from it.

A one-star review

On 13 September 2026, a user named Rogan I gave ArtiDream AI one star on Google Play: "The images and videos it generates don't look anything like the photo you upload. It's just a generic picture. This app is a joke." 6 people marked it helpful. Two weeks later someone else wrote: "I don't like the way it matches the photo."

These two reviews tell the story. The store page for ArtiDream talks about "character roleplay chat + one-tap character portraits" and never mentions uploading your own photo. But the people arriving wanted "upload a photo, get an AI portrait / video". The mismatch between user expectation and the store page most likely means they came in through ads, which promised more than the product delivers (inferred).

What it is

The store page: title ArtiDream AI, developer souer, category Tools, contains ads and in-app purchases, content rating Mature 17+ with "Sexual Themes", in-app purchases from $0.99 to $99.99. The description promises a huge cast of characters (fantasy, urban, ancient Chinese, sci-fi), multi-turn conversation that pushes the plot forward, and the ability to generate a character's portrait with one tap during chat, with the portrait woven into later plot.

The version is stuck at v0.3, and the last update was 28 August. It hasn't been touched since it launched a month in, yet installs kept climbing.

Who's behind it

Its website artidream.net loads every character card from statics.playrole.ai. The image URLs contain skin IDs, and the gender labels are written in Chinese (女性 / 男性, female / male). PlayRole.ai is an AI roleplay platform that positions itself as treating users as adults. Its character library is the same: fantasy, ancient-xianxia, urban romance, plus a batch of borderline-explicit settings. ArtiDream is one skin over this white-label frontend (11-06 read both sites' pages).

The same backend has at least two more packages on Play, both under the developer BAKA LIMITED: "Ai Chat & Video-Roleplay", listed in April, with 139k installs and a 3.95 rating, and another simply called "Playrole.Ai". The package names end in scppipou, scecce and rarubereng, which looks like the same randomly generated shell naming. On iOS, PlayRole.AI was removed in September 20.

The ArtiDream account's legal entity is Hong Kong Paisi Technology Limited (香港派斯科技). It was registered in Hong Kong in May 2025, with an address in an industrial building in Kwun Tong. The privacy policy ends with "In case of discrepancy, the Chinese version prevails." A China-based team, a Hong Kong shell, and several developer accounts all distribute the same backend. ArtiDream is just one of them.

Where the installs came from: injected in pulses

From 8 through October, it averaged 700–800 installs a day, with several single-day spikes: 8-17 one day +4,664,10-04, +3,591,10-08, +2,880, then days near zero again. The early numbers are third-party estimates. Daily numbers from Play only start at the end of October.

At the same time, it never appeared on the overall or category charts in any of the 30 countries. TikTok and X show no content about it, and there is no media coverage. No charts, no organic content, yet the installs arrived in batches. The most likely explanation is batch-bought paid acquisition (inferred; no direct evidence of ad sources). In Play's data safety disclosure, device IDs, approximate location and app interactions are all labeled for "advertising or marketing" use, indicating ad attribution is integrated. The two "photo doesn't match" reviews above also line up with the ad promise of uploading a photo to get a portrait (inferred).

Two more moves:

  • Placed under "Tools" rather than "Entertainment" or "Social". The character-chat leaders (Character AI, Talkie, PolyBuzz) crowd those two categories. Putting it under another category and giving it an image-tool-style name means fewer direct collisions in the store. It may also reduce scrutiny of the adult content (motive is inferred).
  • The name piggybacks on "Dream AI". WOMBO Dream, DreamAI and similar apps are big image-generation keywords, so it may pick up some search spillover (not verified).

Where the money came from: 17+ and $99.99

A third-party estimate from AppGazers puts its in-app purchase revenue for 2026 October at $10.2K–$48.8K. October saw roughly 20k new installs; at the midpoint of $25k, that's over $1 per install. For a "utility" app that's high, but for a borderline AI companion app it's normal. We haven't verified this estimate.

The money comes straight from: 17+ "Sexual Themes" characters, with single in-app purchases up to $99.99, plus an ad layer on top. Each install can earn back more than 1 dollars, so paid acquisition pays for itself, which is why they dare to buy traffic in batches. Mainstream Character AI has strict content moderation, and the 17+ demand it blocks is what the PlayRole family is feeding on.

It's already declining

After Oct 22, daily installs fell to one or two hundred a day; from 11-01 to 11-05, two of those days were zero. Rating 3.1 (74 reviews). From 10-29 to 11-03, one-star reviews rose from 25 to 31 in a week, with no new five-stars. New users are unhappy, most likely over the paywall or "photos don't look like them."

Following the usual sock-puppet playbook, the next step is either to stop buying traffic or to relaunch under a new skin.

On the web there are also character chat + image/video sites like OurDream and Nastia, running on SEO and affiliate traffic. "Chat, and then a photo set appears" isn't unique to ArtiDream either: SeaArt, OurDream and Nastia all do it. The category has dozens of players, and the leaders are at tens of millions of installs.

Compared with these, ArtiDream has nothing distinctive at the product level. Its difference is all in distribution: the same backend, reskinned, under different publisher entities and categories, listed over and over, with each listing picking up its own wave of traffic and carrying its own share of policy risk.

Can you ride it?

Copying ArtiDream itself makes no sense: the product has no edge, the category leaders have tens of millions of installs and heavy paid acquisition, and this listing is already declining on its own.

What you can take is the distribution playbook, but it has real prerequisites:

  • A backend that already makes money. The sock-puppet approach assumes you already have a product with working monetization. The puppets only exist to capture extra paid acquisition and store traffic. Without a parent product, the puppets are just building an AI companion app from scratch.
  • A paid acquisition budget and payback math. Each listing needs tens of thousands of installs, and about $1 per install in revenue. The real skill is in the buying.
  • The stomach to absorb bans. Borderline content plus repeated listings hits two Google Play policies at once: sexual content and repetitive/spam apps. PlayRole's iOS version has already been pulled once.

If you already run a revenue-generating app, "switch category, reposition, ship another package" is worth testing. If you don't, the lesson from this piece is: the money in AI companion products comes from 17+ and high-priced in-app purchases, the volume comes from ads, and the store listing can tell a different story from the ads.

If it were you

Verdict: worth learning from, not worth following. There's no product-level opportunity to chase here. The distribution playbook depends on a backend and paid acquisition capability you'd need to already have.

Who it suits: teams that already have an AI chat / companion / image-generation app making money, that buy Google UAC or Meta install ads, and that want to launch several packages to capture more volume.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers starting from zero; those without a paid acquisition budget; those unwilling to take on 17+ content and ban risk; those who care about brand and long-term users.

How to do it: turn your existing backend into a reskinnable frontend. Give each package its own name, icon, category and lead selling point (say, one about chat, one about photo sets, one about video). Publish them under different developer accounts. For each package, test single-install revenue on a small budget, and only scale once it beats acquisition cost.

How to acquire users: mostly install ads, with creatives built around visible things like "one tap for photos / video." Place the store listing in a less competitive category and aim the name at high-search image-generation keywords. The ad promise has to match the product, or you end up with ArtiDream's one-star reviews about "photos don't look like me."

On timing: there's no clear window. But this family has already been pulled from iOS once, and if Play tightens up any day, the puppets go with it. If you're going to test it, do it now; don't count on it lasting.

Signs I got this wrong: (1) If ArtiDream's daily installs climb back to several hundred a day after December, it isn't a one-off wave, and a single listing can pay back over time. That would warrant a re-estimate. (2) Conversely, if it and its sibling packages get delisted on Play, the puppet route has been closed off; don't try it. (3) If reliable figures show its per-install revenue well below $1, the payback premise doesn't hold, and the whole playbook is just burning money.

Where users come from
  • Inferred Paid acquisition (likely Google UAC / Meta install ads): the install curve comes in pulses (08-17 +4,664, 10-04 +3,591, 10-08 +2,880, with nearly 0 in the days in between). It has never charted and has no organic content. The data safety statement marks device IDs, location and interaction data as used for "advertising or marketing." The metaads and googleads libraries show nothing tracked.
  • Confirmed Sock-puppet matrix / multi-account distribution: all of artidream.net's assets come from statics.playrole.ai (skin=figma10). PlayRole also has two more packages: scppipou from BAKA LIMITED (139k installs) and scecce. PlayRole.AI on iOS 2026-09-20 was pulled from the store.
  • Confirmed Switching category and repositioning: character chat is listed under the Tools category, named after an image-generation product, ArtiDream, and marketed as "AI photo sets" to avoid the leaders in Entertainment / Social.
  • Inferred TikTok / X / Reddit / media: TikHub and x-radar show no related content, and there's no media coverage.

Why ArtiDream AI (com.arti.dreamai.gp.rarubereng) could run at all

In one line: it isn't an independent product. It's a reskinned sock puppet of PlayRole.ai, a role-play platform run by a Chinese team. Using a newly registered Hong Kong shell company (Hong Kong Paisi Technology Limited) and the developer name souer, it was listed on Play under the Tools category. Pulses of traffic (most likely paid) brought it to roughly 69k installs. Its revenue came from 17+ borderline characters and in-app purchases of up to $99.99. From November, daily installs fell from about 700 to about 200, while the rating (3.1 stars, 1 reviews) is still rising. This round has passed its peak. To be precise, this is "one listing in a matrix that ran one wave," not "one product that broke out."

Our database shows roughly 20.5k real new installs in October (46,882 → 67,307). If AppGazers' median (about $25K) holds, in-app purchases alone exceed $1 per install. That's high for the Tools category, but normal for AI companion / risqué roleplay apps. Per our rules, we did not verify the money.

2. Who actually makes it

  1. The backend is PlayRole.ai: every character card on the artidream.net homepage loads from statics.playrole.ai/background/..., icon paths are figma7/icon/...?skin=figma10, and gender labels are written in Chinese (女性 / 男性). This is a white-label frontend with a skin number (read via jina from artidream.net and playrole.ai, 2026-11-06). The character library shares a source with the playrole.ai main site: fantasy, xianxia-style historical, urban romance, plus a batch of risqué settings ("Tough Stepmother", incest and tsundere tags on the main site).
  2. PlayRole itself runs a Play portfolio:
    • com.playroleai.stroy.scppipou "Ai Chat & Video-Roleplay", developer BAKA LIMITED, listed on 2026-04-23, 139k installs, rated 3.95, last updated 08-03 (googleplay database).
    • com.playroleai.rpg.scecce "Playrole.Ai", also BAKA LIMITED (indexed by APKPure / Softonic).
    • PlayRole.AI on iOS (id6744962172, developer Tarawania Tarawania) 2026-09-20 has been removed (AppBrain search summary; iTunes lookup now returns nothing).
    • The package suffixes are random strings like scppipou, scecce, rarubereng, which points to one generator producing shell apps.

4. Growth tactics

ChannelEvidenceConfirmed?
Paid acquisition (presumably Google UAC / Meta install ads)The install curve is pulsed: single days of +4,664 (08-17), +3,591 (10-04), +2,880 (10-08), with several days near 0 in between. It never charted and shows no organic content. The Play data safety section lists device IDs, approximate location, and app interactions as used for "advertising or marketing," which suggests attribution / ad SDKs. Our metaads and googleads databases don't track it, so we can't confirm directly. No
Shell matrix / multi-account distributionThe same backend (statics.playrole.ai, skin=figma10) has shipped at least 3 packages: two under BAKA LIMITED, one under souer. Package names carry random suffixes, and different shell companies are used (BAKA LIMITED, Hong Kong Paisi). The iOS PlayRole has already been removed.Yes
Change the category and the positioningFiled under Tools instead of Entertainment / Social, titled "ArtiDream" (a drawing-app name), described as "AI photo generation." This avoids the crowded character-chat categories, and may also lower the chance of risqué content drawing review (motive is inferred).Yes (category fact); motive not verified
Store search / ASOThe name collides with big "dream AI" terms like WOMBO Dream and DreamAI, possibly picking up some search spillover. Not on any chart. No

5. Why it ran, and how little it really ran

  1. The backend already exists, so marginal cost is near zero: the character library, chat, and image generation all come from the PlayRole main site, and ArtiDream is just skin=figma10. v0.3 went live, then updates stopped after a month, yet traffic kept coming (artidream.net and playrole.ai share resources; last updated 08-28).
  2. The volume was poured in as pulses: 7–October averaged 700–800 installs per day, with three single-day spikes of 2,900–4,700, and no chart or organic content. That fits small-budget batch acquisition (googleplay database app_day_ext).
  3. The money comes from 17+ suggestive characters and high-priced in-app purchases: rated Mature 17+ with "Sexual Themes," top IAP at $99.99, plus ads. AppGazers estimates $10–49K for October, and per-install value may exceed $1. Paid acquisition pays back, which is why they can keep spending.
  4. It serves demand that big-company moderation pushes out: mainstream products like Character.AI are strict, and PlayRole's Reddit positioning is "treat users as adults." ArtiDream sells the same content in an image-generation wrapper.
  5. But this wave is already fading: after 10-22, daily installs dropped to about 100–300, the rating is 3.13, and within a week the 1★ count rose from 25 to 31 while the 5★ count didn't move, so new users are dissatisfied (likely the paywall or the content). Following the usual shell-app playbook, the next step is either stopping spend or moving to a new skin.

VI. Differentiation

The pitch to users is "generate character photos anytime in chat, and the photos become part of the story," but SeaArt Sea Soul, OurDream, and Nastia all offer the same feature, so it isn't unique. The real difference is at the distribution layer: the same backend gets re-skinned, shipped under different shell companies and categories, and each shell takes its own round of paid installs and carries its own review risk. So it didn't run on differentiation. At the product level, the "photo" selling point at best helps ad creatives and store conversion.

7. What's worth borrowing

  • Backend reuse + white-label frontend + multi-shell publishing: one mature backend can be batch-built into packages by skin number, each with a different developer account, Hong Kong shell company, and category positioning. Losing one package (PlayRole's iOS app was pulled) doesn't hurt the whole operation.
  • Avoid crowded categories: character chat is filed under Tools and packaged as "AI photos", which means fewer direct clashes with the leaders in the store.
  • High-ticket monetization funds the acquisition: 17+ content, consumable in-app purchases, and subscriptions reach up to $99.99, plus ads, so a small shell with a few tens of thousands of installs can earn tens of thousands of dollars a month (by estimate).
  • Risks: risqué content plus shell apps, which hits two of Play's red lines at once (repetitive content / spam apps, and sexual content). iOS has already pulled it once, so anyone copying this playbook should count account-ban costs.

8. Visibility

Very few people know about it. There's no press, X, or TikTok discussion, and no public revenue. The only public number is AppGazers' auto-generated estimate page, which exists for every app and doesn't indicate anyone is discussing it. The parent platform PlayRole has only appeared in niche Reddit communities. Copycats: none seen copying ArtiDream specifically. It's one of several skins in PlayRole's shell matrix, and it sits in the same category as Talkie / PolyBuzz.

9. What I'm still unsure about

  • There is no direct evidence on acquisition channels or budgets (the ad libraries don't track it). It could also be cross-promotion from the main PlayRole app, or traffic exchanges / offer walls.
  • How many shells PlayRole has and which company stands behind them (ownership links between BAKA LIMITED, Hong Kong Paisi, and Tarawania are unverified).
  • How accurate AppGazers' revenue estimate is; whether in-app purchases are subscriptions or diamonds; the paying conversion rate.
  • Whether the November drop in daily installs means spend was stopped, or the account was throttled / down-ranked.
  • Whether the early 35 5★ reviews were incentivized (the share of positive early reviews is high relative to 73 total reviews, and the average only moved to 1★ later).
