One space off: how "Art Mate" rode the category leader's heat in Latin America, 6 weeks to 170k installs
What it is An Android app where you trace step by step through tutorials to learn drawing, and draw halves of a canvas together with friends or strangers, with multiplayer art contests and voting. Monetized with ads and in-app purchases.
Why it took off "Draw with strangers" went viral on TikTok through Artmate and ArtWorkout, and users only said "art mate." Its name sits right next to the leader, it copied the features, and it caught the spillover in Spanish-speaking Latin America. Low bars on the Argentina and Mexico category charts gave it another wave of installs once it charted.
CHow you could follow Don't clone Artmate again. If you build here, do the two things the leader gets wrong: fewer ads, and real people matched in. Examples: a one-time-purchase version for parents and kids, or remote co-drawing for couples and friends. Get users through "draw together" TikTok videos, and pick languages where the leaders are weakly localized.

An Android indie dev named their drawing app "Art Mate," one space off from category leader "Artmate." The gameplay is the same: trace along a tutorial, and two people draw one picture together. In its first 6 weeks on Google Play it reached 177k installs, with 7k more in the last 88 days, and it hit #20 on the Art & Design free charts in Argentina and Mexico. It has nothing original. It lives off the spillover from a category that TikTok hyped. Below: how this volume came about, whether it can be copied, and whether it's worth copying.
"This game is called art mate"
In 2026 Oct 25, a TikTok user @aj30532 posted a video captioned with one line: "The game is called art mate," 91 views. In Oct 31, another account, @squishy.fan89, wrote: "Art mate download now for any age add people draw with people" (Art mate, download now, any age, add people and draw together).
The "art mate" they meant is most likely "Artmate: Drawing Together" by Vietnamese company Braly. The app's official account @artmate_app posted "I drew this with a total stranger" in Mar 13, 8.75M views. By Nov 6, it had 19.5M installs on Google Play, adding another 7k over the last 640 days.
Here's the problem: users say "art mate" and never say the developer's name. Search the store and you get more than Braly. The developer lenoox's "Art Mate: How to Draw Together" has the package name com.artmate…, and its description calls itself "Art Mate Together." That's one space off from the original.
What it is
An Android drawing app that matches the leader on three counts:
- Step-by-step tutorials: a drawing is split into stages, outline first, then color. Each stroke earns 1–4 stars based on how closely it fits.
- Draw Together: two people share one canvas, each drawing half, with each other's strokes appearing live. You can Quick Match for a random pairing, or create a room and send the room code to friends.
- Art Battle: several people draw the same picture, can't see each other's work until time's up, then vote.
No sign-up. Rooms run on room codes. A small line on the store page is worth noting: "If no partner is available, Quick Match may pair you with a practice partner." In plain terms, when nobody's online, Quick Match may give you a bot to draw with. Failing to match people when few are online is the most common way small social apps die, and this line gets around it.
Revenue comes from ads and in-app purchases. Individual items cost $4.99–29.99 (Google Play store page, 11-06).
Where the volume comes from
Install curve (before October, AppstoreSpy estimates; after, Google Play installs):
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-10 | About 9,800 | A thousand or two a day |
| 10-20 | About 29k | |
| 10-21 | About 48k | One day up 18.5k |
| 10-29 | 89k | |
| 11-03 | 146k | 11-01 to 11-03, up 39k over three days |
| 11-06 | 177k | 7 days +88k, ratings 227 → 465 |
The key date is Oct 21: lenoox added 18.5k in one day, up from only 1.5–3 thousand a day before. The same day, Braly's Artmate added 334k, its biggest day that month (both AppstoreSpy estimates). In Oct 25 and Nov 3–4, both climbed together. The most plausible read: the same wave of heat hit both, and lenoox caught about one-twentieth of it (inference).
The buzz is mostly in Latin America's Spanish-speaking markets. Another top app, ArtWorkout (23.7M Google Play installs), has a batch of Spanish-language creator accounts on TikTok. 'Draw with strangers' videos routinely hit millions of views in Latin America: @art_sylwia's Oct 7 video reached 4.3M, and @cocodrilo_artwork's Oct 18 video reached 1.07M. Spanish fan accounts are also spontaneously promoting 'artmate': @lunasanchez541 wrote on Oct 10 'usa artmate y podrás hacer estos dibujos, yo lo instalé y funciona' (use artmate and you can make these drawings, I installed it and it works).
lenoox's reviews are almost all five-star Argentine Spanish: "puedes dibujar con un amigo" (you can draw with a friend), "esta wena para jugar con amigos" (pretty good for playing with friends). An English review says: "I played with my cousin and it was fun" (10-31). People came to play with friends, not to learn to draw. Judging by the tone, many appear to be kids (inference).
Charts amplified the volume another round. On the Argentina Art & Design free chart it hit #29 in Oct 32, #1 in Nov 10, and #6 in Nov 19. In Mexico it went from 36 to 17 and then 23. In the US it peaked at #37. In Nov 6 it was on category charts in 24 countries at once (Google Play charts). The Argentina and Mexico category charts have low bars: a few hundred thousand installs is enough to reach the top 20, and charting brings chart placement and "similar apps" recommendations.
I didn't see it buying ads itself, and I couldn't find its own TikTok account. But not finding something doesn't mean it didn't spend. There's a TikTok account @artmate.learn.howtodraw that posted "Draw with friends and compare the results" in August, with 310k views. It promoted a package now removed from the store that was also called "Art Mate Together." I can't confirm whether it's the same team as lenoox.
Its own search ranking is actually not high. Using the web version of Google Play, searching "art mate" and "dibujar juntos" in the US and Argentina storefronts, it doesn't appear in the top 10 (personalized results on mobile may differ). So how much of the volume came from the name is unclear from the outside. What is clear is that its rises and falls have always tracked Braly.
Who it's competing with
The category is already crowded:
| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ArtWorkout | 23.7M installs, +186k in 7 days | One of the sources of "multiplayer drawing": on iOS since 2021, and Spanish-speaking creators taught Latin American users about it |
| Artmate: Drawing Together(Braly) | 19.5M, 7 days +640k | The Android package was originally called "Trace Art" and was renamed Artmate in September. #1 on the UK category chart |
| ArtLoop: How to Draw Together | 7.98M | A 2024 follower |
| Neon Draw & Drawing Together | 153k, +20k in 7 days | Launched in Aug 21, one of the same batch of copycats as lenoox |
| Draw Together(KW10)/ Sketchmate | 500k+ / 100k+ | Only a shared canvas, no tutorials |
| Artmate: Draw Together(BUGUN) | 100+ | Also rode the name, but didn't take off |
Compared with the leader, lenoox's features are nearly identical. It took off not because it's better, but because the name is close, it launched fast, and it landed on low-bar Latin American category charts. The developer uses a gmail address and a netlify page. Another app under the same name is the astrology app "Astraline" (39.6k installs), which looks like a small studio pumping out apps in batches (inference). Revenue is not public, there's no press coverage, and nobody is discussing it on X.
Money and risks
Its rating is 4.2, and nearly all the low-star reviews complain about ads: "too much adds, I had just downloaded it, and the first thing that came were ads," and "too many adds, need to buy premium" (10-31). In Argentina, someone says "hay muchos anuncios, pero es genial" (lots of ads, but it's great, 10-16). The users are Latin American kids who probably can't afford much in-app purchasing, so the money mainly comes from ads (inference; revenue not public).
The bigger risk is the name. If the category leader, 100 times its size, files a complaint with Google one day, a rename or takedown is possible. And once Braly's heat fades, the spillover goes with it.
If it were you
Verdict: C. There's something to learn, but copying it as-is isn't worth much. It's a copycat of a copycat. The category already has three tens-of-millions-scale leaders and a run of small same-period apps. Its 170k installs rest on others' heat and a near-identical name, and neither is yours.
Who it suits: small teams already shipping apps in batches, monetizing with ads, and moving fast. Treat it as a playbook to reuse: when a category is blowing up on TikTok and the leader hasn't covered a language or region, ship a full-feature app quickly with a memorable name, ride the spillover for a while, then move on.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone building a long-term product (zero differentiation, plus renaming risk). Anyone counting on in-app purchases (the users are kids who can't pay). Anyone aiming to take on the US and UK head-on (the leaders sit at #1 on those category charts).
How to do it: if you really want to build in this category, don't clone "Artmate" again. There are two places the leader falls short: too many ads and no real people to match with. Directions worth testing: a version for parents and kids with fewer ads and a one-time "family room" purchase; or a version for couples and friends focused on remote co-drawing, with a shareable comparison image at the end. Copy the bot fallback for cold start.
How to get users: through "draw with friends/strangers" TikTok videos. This format has already proven it can reach millions of views. Prioritize languages with weak localization by the leaders and low category-chart bars (Portuguese, Indonesian, and Arabic are worth a look, inference).
When it's over: the heat depends on Braly's growth. It still adds 640k a week. Once that drops below half, the spillover window is basically closed.
What would show I got it wrong: if lenoox keeps its volume after a complaint forces a rename or takedown, that means users are attached to the gameplay, not the name, and small copycats can survive independently. That would make this category broader than it looks. Conversely, if lenoox and copycats like Neon Draw fall back to a few hundred installs a day once Braly cools off, then the small players here were only living off the spillover.

Why Art Mate: How to Draw Together (lenoox, Google Play) took off
Package com.artmate.draw.together.lessons.battle | Developer lenoox | Store launch 2026-09-25 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It's a name-piggybacking + copycat product. Vietnamese studio Braly JSC's 'Artmate: Drawing Together' (Play 19.5M installs, +7k in nearly 640 days, #1 on the UK Art & Design free chart) and ArtWorkout turned 'draw one picture with strangers/friends' into a viral category on TikTok. lenoox launched with a nearly identical name and the same mechanics (step-by-step tutorials, two-player shared drawing, battle voting), catching the search and recommendation spillover from this category in LatAm (Argentina, Mexico). It has no visible ad spend or content, so its differentiation is thin.
1. What it is
- Step-by-step 'outline + color' drawing tutorials, with 1–4 stars per stroke based on fit;
- Draw Together: two players each draw half a picture, Quick Match random pairing or friends via room code;
- Art Battle: draw the same prompt, then vote after time runs out;
- No sign-up, join via room code;
- The store page says that when no one is online, Quick Match may pair you with a practice partner. In other words, bots solve the matchmaking cold-start.
- Monetization: contains ads + in-app purchases at $4.99–29.99 per item (store page 'Contains ads / In-app purchases'; data card iap_range). A review says 'hay muchos anuncios, pero es genial' (lots of ads, but it's great, AR, 2026-10-16).

- Its jumps synced with Braly Artmate's: in AppstoreSpy's estimated curves, Braly Artmate gained +334k in a single day (its highest that month) on 10-21, and lenoox gained +18.5k the same day (previously 1.5–3k per day). 10-25 and 11-03/04 also rose together on both. The most likely explanation is one wave of category heat (TikTok push + store searches for 'art mate' / 'draw together') hitting both, with lenoox capturing roughly 5% of the spillover.
- The review sample is all Argentine Spanish five-star reviews (googleplay.review, 13 reviews, 10-09 to 10-31), such as 'puedes dibujar con un amigo' and 'esta wena para jugar con amigos'. Users come to draw with friends, not to learn to draw.

4. Where users come from
- Name piggybacking (existence confirmed, effect inferred): package com.artmate…, title 'Art Mate: How to Draw Together', description calls itself 'Art Mate Together', targeting Braly's 'Artmate: Drawing Together'. Braly's TikTok @artmate_app (20.8k followers, 199k likes) has a top video at 8.75M views (2026-03-13 'I drew this with a total stranger'). On TikTok, users just say 'art mate' (e.g. @aj30532 10-25 'The game is called art mate', @squishy.fan89 10-31 'Art mate download now'), so people searching that term run into lenoox. But in Play web searches (US and Argentina stores) for 'art mate', 'artmate', and 'dibujar juntos', lenoox didn't appear in the top 10 results, so the share of search capture can't be confirmed. Personalized results on mobile may differ.
- Category-heat spillover + chart feedback loop (inferred, strong evidence): the install jump day synced with Braly's. On Latin American Spanish TikTok, ArtWorkout's multiplayer drawing videos went viral (@art_sylwia 10-07 4.3M views, @cocodrilo_artwork 10-18 1.07M, @luartworkout8 2.11M). Demand is strongest in LatAm, and lenoox landed in the top 20 on the Argentina and Mexico category charts, then picked up more category-chart and 'similar apps' recommendations.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. The metaads library has no advertiser for lenoox / Art Mate (the library only tracks listed products, so absence doesn't mean no spend). No lenoox-owned account found on TikTok. The 'muchos anuncios' in reviews refers to in-app ads.
- Owned content account: suspected. @artmate.learn.howtodraw's profile links to another delisted 'Art Mate Together' app. Top video 310k views, no updates after August. Whether it's the same team as lenoox is unverified.
- Media / X / Reddit: x-radar shows zero posts in the last 30 days for 'artmate', 'art mate', or 'lenoox'. Web search only returns download-site pages for Braly's version.
5. Why it took off
- The category has already been educated by others: ArtWorkout (23.7M) and Braly Artmate (19.5M, +640k in the last 7 days) turned 'draw one picture with strangers' into a viral mechanic on TikTok, so demand already exists.
- The name rides the category leader: 'Art Mate' is almost how users say it, and the matching name gives a free click advantage in the store.
- Copied features + LatAm Spanish market: step-by-step tutorials, two-player shared drawing, battle voting, and no sign-up, all matching the leaders. Users are concentrated in Argentina and Mexico, where the category chart bar is low, so a few hundred thousand installs can push it into the top 20 of the category.
- Bots for cold-start: the biggest problem for small apps is too few people online to match with. It states outright that it will pair you with a 'practice partner', so every open is playable.
- Monetization is ads + in-app purchases, so volume from low-value countries can still earn (revenue unverified).
6. Differentiation
Compared with Braly Artmate and ArtWorkout, there's essentially no functional difference. The only things on the surface are 'Art Battle multiplayer same-prompt voting' and 'per-stroke star feedback', and the leaders have challenge and comparison modes too. Differentiation isn't why it took off. The reasons are name piggybacking + category-heat spillover + a low-barrier LatAm category chart.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue is not public, and there's no media or X discussion. The developer lenoox uses gmail + a netlify page, and their other app is the zodiac app 'Astraline' (39.6k installs), a typical small studio publishing apps in batches. Few people know about it yet, but the category it's in is already very crowded.
- Copycats: it's a copycat itself. Other apps also riding the Artmate name include BUGUN's "Artmate: Draw Together" (100+) and the delisted "Art Mate Together: How to Draw". Same period also saw Neon Draw & Drawing Together (150k).
8. Takeaways
- Find a category blowing up on TikTok whose leading brand hasn't been trademarked yet. Ship fast with a near-identical name and copy every feature, and catch the search and recommendation spillover.
- Social / matching mini-apps: use bots to fill in pairings first so the experience works, then bring in real people later.
- Target Latin America and similar markets: category charts there are easy to crack, and local leaders are weakly localized. Six-figure installs can get you charted, and the chart then brings more volume.
9. Uncertain
- Whether it runs paid campaigns on Google Ads / UAC or TikTok (the database doesn't track it, so this can't be checked).
- How much search hijacking it accounts for (it didn't appear in the top 10 web search results).
- Whether @artmate.learn.howtodraw and the delisted package are the same team.
- Revenue unknown. The store launch date may have been reset (earliest review 10-09, AppstoreSpy tracking from 10-08).
- Risk of being renamed or delisted after complaints from Braly.
