# "Download and get 800k Vietnamese dong": a Guangzhou small-tools company, with a short-drama app that pays you to watch, got 130k installs in two weeks

**What it is** A free vertical short-drama app. Watching dramas and ads builds a "balance" that can be withdrawn once it reaches a set amount. It earns only from ads.

**Why it took off** An ad promising "download and get tens of dollars, withdraw right away", backed by a paid-acquisition budget, aimed at Vietnam, Indonesia, and South Africa, where installs are cheap and the entertainment chart bar is low. The product itself has no differentiation.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the app itself. Teams with domestic IAA and paid-acquisition experience can borrow its mechanics (a welcome gift plus a withdrawal progress bar) and its approach of climbing charts in low-barrier countries, provided withdrawals actually pay out.

D grade: it's one of dozens of "watch dramas, earn money" short-drama shells. Growth comes entirely from paid acquisition and a withdrawal threshold that's hard to reach, with no content library, brand, or product differentiation. Similar apps with over ten million installs sit alongside big companies with hundreds of millions of installs, and it carries review and delisting risk. A small team has no opening here. Few people know about it yet.

HypeDrama is a free short-drama app on Google Play, listed in Sep 16. Growth picked up in late October and reached 156k cumulative installs by Nov 6. It charted Vietnam's Entertainment Free #16, Korea #45, and Morocco #24. Its store page only calls itself a "curated short-drama" app. User reviews tell the other half: its ads promise "download and get money, withdraw right away", but the withdrawal threshold always seems just out of reach. It's made by a Guangzhou company with registered capital of 10k yuan that used to make domestic "watch ads for rewards" tools. Below: what it is, how it grew, where the money comes from, and whether you should follow it.

### Two reviews from the morning of Oct 27

On the morning of Oct 27 at 5:12, Vietnamese user Kim Vu Fei gave HypeDrama one star:

> Just as advertised: downloading gives you 800K for real, but you need to reach 1 million dong before you can withdraw, and that 1 million will never be reached. A scam app. (Exactly as the ad says, the download really gives 800K, but you need 1M Vietnamese dong to cash out, and that 1M is never reachable. It's a scam app.)

The same day, on the other side of the world in South Africa, Christine Gilbert also left a one-star review:

> fals advertiseing, receive no R400 to withdraw. U have to whatch drama where by u can only withdraw at R500. Whereby ur rewards runs from R2 to R4 if ur lucky. really. — False advertising. The R400 they promised never arrives. You have to keep watching drama, you can only withdraw at R500, and each reward is only R2 to R4, and only if you're lucky.

The next day, Indonesian user Warma Dermanto wrote nearly the same thing: the app promised 200k rupiah just for downloading and would send it straight to a DANA wallet. The balance already shows 400k, but withdrawals only open at 500k (Google Play review, 10-27, 10-28).

Three countries, three currencies, one design: **the ad promises a welcome gift, the app sets the withdrawal threshold just above that gift, and the rest of the gap is slowly filled by watching ads one at a time** . That is the entire business of HypeDrama.

### What it is

The store page doesn't show any of this. The description is a generic template: "war gods, revenge comebacks, domineering CEOs, suspense, costume time travel", "AI recommendations", "multilingual subtitles", "updated daily". The release notes say "upgraded recommendation algorithm to help you instantly discover the hottest domineering CEO, tragic romance and revenge short dramas". It's labeled "contains ads", has no in-app purchases, and has no iOS version. 10-26 published 1.0.3 version and never updated it after that (Google Play store page, 11-06).

The "watch dramas, earn money" hook appears in only two places: the ads it runs, and the app once installed. User reviews fill in the rest:

- On entry you get an opening balance (Vietnam 800k dong, Indonesia 200k rupiah, South Africa 400 rand, roughly 12 to 30 USD, estimated);

- The withdrawal threshold is slightly above that balance (Vietnam 1M dong, Indonesia 500k rupiah, South Africa 500 rand);

- Each ad or episode watched adds a little money. South African users say it's 2 to 4 rand each time, and a Vietnamese user says "I watched all day and earned just 3 thousand dong";

- Once you hit the threshold, withdrawal means "waiting 7 days for review" (Vietnamese user NGUYỄN DUY TÌNH, 10-27). A Korean user complained "I don't have KakaoPay, scammers", which shows that in Korea withdrawals go through KakaoPay.

The most candid five-star review came from a Vietnamese user: "You really can earn money, but it's too little, takes too much time, and isn't worth watching. 1 thousand dong a day, ads one after another, can't watch anything. Five stars." (Tòng Đặng văn, 10-29)

### Who made it

The "About the developer" section on the store page lists **Guangzhou Douliang Network Technology Co., Ltd.** , at Hanxi Avenue East, Panyu District, with support email douliangKF@outlook.com. The website is saomiaodashi.cn, which means "scan master". According to Qichacha business records, the company was founded in May 2023 with registered capital of 10k yuan. Its domestic products are ad-for-reward mini-programs and small apps like "Goldfish Raising", "Fun World Viewer" and "Fun Quiz Challenge". Its servers sit on the same Alibaba Cloud address block as domains like "Healthy Charging" and "Idiom Guess".

Only two apps sit under the same Google Play developer account: HypeDrama, and LuckyVibe, a shake-to-draw lottery app. The developer bio has been changed to "DouliangWL is your first choice for mini-dramas and short dramas".

Put plainly, the team behind this short-drama app isn't a short-drama company. It's a small domestic team that has mastered "watch ads to earn money" and moved the same setup overseas with a new content shell. Guangzhou also has a company on the same track: Triton Network's NexShort. Its website is a domestic step-counter tool site called "Smart Pedometer", its support email follows the same "name + KF@outlook.com" pattern, and it launched in Aug 21 and has 11-06 installs 398k (Google Play install count). Whether the two share the same template or operator can't be verified from outside.

### How it grew

Start with the numbers (Google Play install counts; 10-29 figures before that are AppstoreSpy estimates):

| Date | Total installs | Charts at the time |
|---|---|---|
| 09-16 | Launched | Barely any traffic for over a month |
| 10-25 | About 21k | |
| 10-29 | 32k | Korea Entertainment Top Free 58, South Africa 71, Indonesia 120, Saudi Arabia 185, Japan 198 |
| 10-31 | 56k | Vietnam Entertainment Top Free 16 (Vietnam overall Top Free 163) |
| 11-03 | 137k | Only Vietnam 39 and Thailand 186 left |
| 11-06 | 156k | Vietnam 50 |

Over 130k in two weeks, 124k of it in just 7 days, roughly 80% of the total. Store install counts refresh only every few days, so the "0 days" with no growth don't necessarily mean it actually stalled; but the overall shape is clear: from zero to tens of thousands a day in about ten days, charting in seven or eight countries at once with ranks jumping daily. TikTok has no official account or creator videos for it, and X shows zero mentions in 60 days. The only thing that explains this curve is **paid acquisition** (inference, high confidence). I couldn't pin down which platform it's running on, but every bad review complains that "it doesn't match the ad," which suggests users were pulled in by an ad promising a welcome gift.

Reviews reveal where users came from more fully than the charts do. Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka all have commenters, and the earliest batch dates to October 21, on the 22 (Korea and Morocco), just before the volume surge. The reason for choosing these countries is simple: installs are cheap and the Entertainment category charts are easy to crack. When it hit #16 on Vietnam's Entertainment chart it had only 56k cumulative installs, and when it hit #45 in Korea it had only 32k.

Ratings also reveal regional differences. With the same 213 ratings, Google Play displays different scores by region: in Vietnam it shows 3.0 stars (102 one-star and 95 five-star), in Indonesia 3.2, in Korea 3.6, in Morocco 4.1, in Bangladesh 4.3, and in South Africa 4.6 (11-06). Vietnamese and Indonesian users spell out "can't withdraw". In South Africa and Bangladesh, most five-star reviews are one or two words like "incredible game", "very nice game", "so good", which reads like ratings prompted from inside the app while people were playing it as a game (inference).

### Where the money comes from

It comes from ads. There are no in-app purchases, the store listing says it contains ads, the privacy policy says it collects data on "which ads are more relevant to you", and users say "ads one after another". The welcome gift and the steadily rising balance are the reason to watch a few more rewarded videos.

The economics of this design look roughly like this (inference): the real money outflow happens only when the few who build up to the threshold get through the 7-day review. Most people quit when they're still short of the withdrawal line, and by then the ads they've watched have already turned into revenue. In markets like Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa, ad prices are low, but installs are cheap too. As long as the ad revenue each user generates before leaving exceeds what it cost to acquire them, the model breaks even. How much each install costs, how many ads a user watches, and how long they stay are all invisible from outside.

This move has a price. Ratings get trashed (half of Vietnam's reviews are one-star), and Google Play bans "misleading reward promises", so packages like this are routinely delisted and relaunched under new names.

### Who it's competing with

It's crowded. 11-06 In the Vietnam and South Korea Google Play Entertainment Top Free charts, nearly the top 50 are all short dramas, in three tiers:

| Layer | Examples | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| Paid short-drama platforms | DramaBox, ReelShort | About 307M each; DramaBox is #1 in Vietnam |
| Big free short-drama players | FreeReels, DramaWave, Melolo, TikTok's PineDrama | 150M to 250M; PineDrama 84M, #2 in Vietnam |
| Watch-to-earn / free shell apps | Coin Drama (17.9M, +1.18M in a week), VibeShort (19.5M), MixReels (14M), CashDrama (500k, #13 in Vietnam), FortuneDrama, NexShort | Hundreds of thousands to twenty million |

There are 214 entertainment apps listed for less than 120 days with drama, short or reel in their names, and 49 of them added more than 100k in the last 7 days. HypeDrama sits in the back half of those 49. It isn't the first to use the "watch dramas, earn money" hook. Coin Drama and CashDrama both have money in their names.

### How many people know about it

Almost no one. No media coverage, nothing on X or TikTok, no public revenue figures, and what you can find online is limited to APK download sites and chart aggregators. But "few people know about it" isn't an opportunity here. The full playbook it uses, short-drama content plus watch-ads-to-earn, with the withdrawal threshold set just above the welcome gift, is what domestic Chinese mini-program earning apps have been doing for years, and a growing number of domestic teams are now taking it overseas. Nobody is copying HypeDrama specifically, because it was built straight from this template.

### If it were you

**D. Worth knowing about, not worth chasing.** There is no product in HypeDrama to follow. The content is generic short drama, the store page is a template, and its growth comes from a welcome-gift ad, a withdrawal line that is always just out of reach, and a paid acquisition budget. Others have all three. There are already dozens of similar apps, and ahead of them are big players with hundreds of millions of installs.

**Who it suits** : companies already doing IAA (ad-based monetization) in China, with a user acquisition team and monetization data. For you, HypeDrama and NexShort prove one thing: swap a domestic earn-money tool for a short-drama shell, spend on Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa and Morocco, and you can stack a few hundred thousand installs in two or three weeks, and possibly squeeze into the category charts along the way.

**Who it doesn't suit** : indie developers and small teams. The cost of this business is in user acquisition and content licensing, not in the app. If you've never run Meta or Google ads and can't calculate how many ads a user must watch to break even, you're paying tuition the moment you start. It's also not for anyone counting on organic traffic. This category has no organic traffic, and negative reviews will sink the store page.

**How to do it** : if you want to take anything from it, take the mechanism, not the category. First, the "welcome gift + slightly higher withdrawal threshold + a balance that creeps up" formula, which is essentially turning rewarded-video views into a progress bar. To use it elsewhere, you have to set the threshold where users can actually reach it and really pay out, otherwise ratings and delisting risk will eat you alive. Second, test in countries with low entry barriers for the Entertainment chart, like Vietnam, South Africa and Morocco. A few tens of thousands of installs can get you onto a chart and win some store exposure.

**How to acquire users** : paid acquisition only, with vertical video ads written in the local currency, "download and get X", one set per country. There is no second path.

**When to move** : no rush, because this window never belonged to small teams in the first place.

**What would show you read it wrong** : (1) by early December it passes 500k cumulative installs and is still in the top 30 of Vietnam's Entertainment chart while continuing to ship updates. That would mean this "earn-money drama shell" pays back better than it looks, backed by a team that keeps raising its budget. (2) Screenshots of "withdrawal arrived" and positive reviews start showing up in Vietnamese and Indonesian reviews, meaning it's using real withdrawals to build reputation, so this isn't a one-off harvest. (3) Conversely, if it gets delisted before December, or drops out of the top 100 and stops updating, that confirms it was just a delivery test and will reappear under a new name.

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid acquisition (rotating across multiple countries)** : daily install step-ups and cutoffs: 10-25/26 each around 11k, 10-27/28 about 0,10-29~31 +24k, 11-01~03 +81k; 10-29 appeared on the same day in the category charts of five countries: Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and South Africa; 156k installs with zero ratings

- Inference **Meta ads** : searching the metaads library by package name, app name and domain each returns 0 results (this library only tracks advertisers discovered through keywords, so zero results does not mean no ads were run)

- **Confirmed** **Low-bar category charts** : on Vietnam's Entertainment Top Free, the app sat at #16 with only 56k cumulative installs; on Korea's chart at #45 with 32k cumulative; on Appfigures' Morocco Entertainment chart at #24

- Inferred **TikTok / X content** : TikHub and x-radar find no official accounts or creator content

## Why HypeDrama (com.asnwin.hype.drama) got traction

> 渠道:Google Play | 开发者:DouLiangWL(商店页「关于开发者」写的是 广州斗量网络科技有限公司)| 首发:2026-09-16 | 研究日:2026-11-06

### Bottom line

The product didn't break out on its own. A micro-company in Guangzhou that makes small ad-monetization tools for the China market (registered capital ¥10k; its website domain, saomiaodashi.cn, translates to "Scan Master") used its own developer account to publish an ad-supported short-drama wrapper. For over a month after launch it had almost no traction. From 10-25 it scaled in several paid bursts, running in Vietnam, Korea, South Africa and Morocco, where chart entry is cheap, and reached about 130k installs in two weeks. Its scale ranks near the bottom of its peer group, it has no differentiation, and nobody talks about it.

### 1. Core data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; before 10-29, install figures are AppstoreSpy estimates)

| Date | Total installs | Daily adds | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09-16 | — | — | Store launch. AppstoreSpy didn't start tracking until 10-25, which suggests fewer than a thousand or two installs before then |
| 10-25 | 20,973 | ~11k/day | First scale-up wave (AppstoreSpy estimate) |
| 10-26 | 31,907 | ~11k | A 1.0.3 release shipped the same day (updated_at 10-26) |
| 10-27~28 | 31,945 | ~0 | Stopped |
| 10-31 | 56,227 | 3 days +24k | Vietnam Entertainment Top Free #16, Vietnam overall Top Apps #163 |
| 11-03 | 137,210 | 3 days +81k | The biggest wave, averaging about 27k/day |
| 11-04 | 147,159 | +9,949 | |
| 11-06 | 156,317 | 2 days +9,158 | back down to about 4.6k a day |

- 7 days brought in 124,372 new installs, 80% of cumulative installs. Daily gains follow an on-off-on step pattern, not a smooth organic curve, which looks like paid-acquisition budgets switched on and off in bursts.

- **Rating 0, text reviews 0** (156k installs with zero ratings, which an organically retained product wouldn't have), no in-app purchases (`offers_iap=False`), listed as containing ads: pure ad-supported monetization (IAA).

- Category charts (chart_rank): 10-29 first appeared together in id 120, jp 198, **kr 58** , sa 185, za 71; 10-30 in kr 45 and za 48; 10-31 in **Vietnam 16** (also entered Vietnam's overall Top Apps at 163) and Thailand 189; 11-01~02 added Turkey 131~139; from 11-03 only Vietnam (39→48→46→50) and Thailand 186 remained. It entered 5~8 countries at once with ranks jumping around daily, which looks like region-by-region rotating ad spend.

- Outside evidence: Appfigures' Morocco Google Play Entertainment Top Free chart lists HypeDrama at #24 (https://appfigures.com/top-apps/google-play/morocco/entertainment, captured 2026-11-06; the chart date isn't stated). Our library doesn't cover Morocco, so part of the 11-01~03 81k may come from North Africa or the Middle East (inferred).

- No iOS version (an iTunes search for "HypeDrama" returns nothing).

### 2. Who runs it

- Store page: developer DouLiangWL, "About the developer" = **Guangzhou Douliang Network Technology Co., Ltd.** , address Hanxi Avenue East, Zhongcun Subdistrict, Panyu District, Guangzhou 182 913, phone +86 130 5447 0580, support email douliangKF@outlook.com, developer email dugouholo@gmail.com, website saomiaodashi.cn (Play listing page, read via r.jina.ai).

- Qichacha search summary: company 2023-05-08 established, legal representative 谭钧钊 (Tan Junzhao), registered capital ¥10k (https://m.qcc.com/firm/ffdea8f6d7e5eb13cda65504278db2ae.html).

- China business: the search summary for saomiaodashi.cn shows domestic "grow-a-pet" style monetization such as 金鱼迎福·趣味养成 and 点点金鱼缸. The Microsoft Store carries its 光影趣看 app (趣看世界 + 趣闯答题, distributed via Tencent's App Treasure, 应用宝), and App Treasure has a developer page (sj.qq.com/developer/19561289). check-host shows nbs.saomiaodashi.cn, jiankangchongdian.cn (健康充电) and chengyuwocai.cn (成语我猜) on the same Alibaba Cloud IP range. This is a typical "watch ads, earn rewards" tool team from China.

- Only two apps sit under this Play account: HypeDrama, and LuckyVibe (com.goodgo.luckyvibe), a shake-to-draw app that uses the same email, dugouholo@gmail.com. The Play developer page bio now reads "DouliangWL is your top destination for mini-series and short dramas." The three package prefixes (asnwin / goodgo) are unrelated, apparently picked at random.

- **Same playbook, same kind of peer** : NexShort (com.clfun.nex.short, developer Triton Network, website zhinengjibu.cn "Smart Step Counter", support TritonNKF@outlook.com). This is also a China-based step-counter IAA tool company that went global with a short-drama wrapper, using the same "XXXKF@outlook.com + China tool domain" pattern. It launched 08-21, reached 398k installs by 11-06, and also grew in steps (AppstoreSpy estimate / googleplay library). The two may share an outsourcing firm or template vendor, or they may just be same-city peers copying each other (unverified).

### 3. Competitors

The top 50 or so Entertainment Top Free apps in Vietnam and Korea are almost all short dramas (googleplay library v_chart, 2026-11-06):

- Major paid / mixed-monetization platforms: DramaBox (307M installs, Vietnam #1), ReelShort (307M, Vietnam #3, Korea #3), FreeReels (246M, Korea #1), NetShort (162M), DramaWave (152M), Melolo (147M).

- Big tech: TikTok's own PineDrama (84M, launched in Vietnam at #2,2025-12), focused on free full episodes.

- Free / earn-money wrappers (same business as HypeDrama): Coin Drama (17.9M, 7 days +1.18M), VibeShort (19.5M), MixReels (14M), CashDrama (500k, Vietnam #13), FortuneDrama (520k), Reel Drama 看剧赚钱 (640k), Spark Dramas, StoryBlast, plus clone portfolios such as Drama World and Halo Reels with millions of installs.

- Within the library, 214 Entertainment apps with names containing drama / short / reel and first published within 120 days; 49 of them added more than 100k installs in 7 days (googleplay library app_profile, 11-06). HypeDrama is one of these 49, ranking near the lower end.

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (rotating multi-country spend) | Daily installs show on-off-on steps (10-25/26, 10-29~31, 11-01~03 as three waves, with 0 in between); 10-29 it appeared on the same day in Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and South Africa category charts, with ranks swinging hard daily; zero ratings means the growth isn't organic word of mouth. Ad platform not verified. | Inferred (the pattern is strong, but no ad creatives were seen) |
| Meta ads | Searching the metaads library for the package name, app name and website domain each returns 0 results; this library only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword search, so no result doesn't mean no spend. | Unconfirmed |
| TikTok / X content | TikHub searches for "HypeDrama" and "Hype Drama app" find no official accounts or creator videos; x-radar: 0 posts in 60 days | Confirmed none |
| Low-bar mini charts | On Vietnam's Entertainment Top Free it accumulated only 16k installs when ranked #56; Korea's chart at #45 held only 32k cumulative; Morocco at #24. In these markets a few tens of thousands of installs can chart, and charting brings a bit of store visibility. | Confirmed |
| Store search / name piggybacking | The name collides with HypeDrama-style terms such as DramaHype (Multibook) and Hype; chrome-stats lists DramaHype as a similar app. Not a deliberate attempt to ride a major brand. | Weak |

Where the money comes from: there are no in-app purchases, the store listing says it contains ads, and the privacy policy mentions collecting data for "which ads are more relevant to you," so the model is rewarded-video / interstitial ad monetization. The traffic bought is from low-CPM markets like Vietnam, South Africa and Morocco, and it only works if the cost per install is below ad revenue per user. No public data on the return (unverified).

### 5. Why it took off

1. **Category tailwind** : overseas short dramas were already a large market by 2026 (21 Century Business Herald 2026-10-23, citing DataEye: roughly 20M USD a day in overseas short-drama ad spend). Vietnam's and Korea's entertainment charts are saturated with short dramas. ReelShort, DramaBox and TikTok's PineDrama have already educated users, so "watch short dramas free" needs no explanation.

2. **Domestic IAA team, transplanted** : Douliang already built "watch ads" tools, so ad monetization, paid-acquisition optimization and bulk app publishing were ready-made capabilities. Swapping in short-drama content and shipping to the overseas Play store has very low marginal cost.

3. **Chart-climbing in low-bar countries** : Vietnam, South Africa, Korea and Morocco's Entertainment charts need very few installs, so a few tens of thousands can push it into the top 20~50.

4. **Timing** : it started scaling in 10-25, catching the window when many similar wrapper apps scaled together in late October to early November (Drama World Max, Glint Reels, Dramovie and others also started climbing in those days).

### 6. Differentiation

Nothing. The store description is generic template copy (war god / revenge / CEO romance / suspense / period drama, "AI recommendations," "multilingual subtitles"); the update notes are boilerplate; there is no original content, no evidence of localized series, and no earn-money or cash-out mechanic (unlike CashDrama or Reel Drama). It doesn't even have ratings. Its only difference from others is who is behind it: not a professional short-drama distributor or a Vietnamese clone factory, but a domestic IAA tool team using its company account. That difference didn't make it work; the reason was paid acquisition.

### 7. How visible it is

Almost nobody knows about it: no media, X or TikTok discussion, no public revenue figures, only passive listings on aggregators like AppBrain, APKPure, chrome-stats and Appfigures. As for copycats, this whole playbook is itself a copy-and-paste product, and no package specifically copying HypeDrama has been spotted. For a similar approach see NexShort.

### 8. What to borrow

- The easiest overseas entry point for a domestic IAA team: use existing monetization and paid-acquisition capabilities, pair them with a content wrapper whose category is already educated (short dramas), spend on low-CPM countries, and chart in markets with low entry bars to buy visibility.

- Signal to watch: zero ratings + stepped daily installs + simultaneous multi-country category charts = a pure paid-acquisition wrapper. It shows no retention, so it isn't a product opportunity to chase. It is only a signal that this category still pays back in these countries.

### 9. Uncertain

- No direct evidence on ad channels (Meta / Google UAC / TikTok / domestic aggregators).

- Unclear where the content comes from (licensed, re-uploaded or AI-generated short dramas); retention and ad revenue are also unknown.
