"This isn't an app, it's an ad factory": a one-star astrology app with a wall of one-star reviews gets 340k installs in two and a half months
What it is A fully free astrology app: natal charts, compatibility, moon phases and a daily tarot card. It earns from interstitial ads and was published on Google Play by a Vietnamese app factory through a real construction company's developer account.
Why it took off The product is nothing special. They bought cheap traffic in batches from South Asia and the Gulf to push the Lifestyle charts in low-barrier small markets like Singapore and the UAE, then recouped through full-screen ads. A collapsing rating doesn't break that math.
CHow you could follow Copying it outright is pointless: there are already four or five same-template apps, and the late ones are growing faster. Teams with paid-acquisition skills could build what it doesn't do well: accurate natal charts with restrained ads, or native-language astrology for Hindi and Urdu users, tested with low-cost South Asian install ads in batches.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-21 · 11-07 installs 341,605
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Astralis is a free astrology app on Google Play: natal charts, compatibility, moon phases and one daily tarot card. It has no brand and no in-app purchases, and its rating is so bad the store page doesn't show one. Yet it went from launch in Aug 21 to 6 in Nov with 340k installs, and reached #4 on Singapore's free Lifestyle chart. It's one of a batch of Vietnamese "template astrology" apps, and at least four siblings are growing on the same playbook at the same time. Below: how it grew, where the money comes from, and what anyone thinking of following it should look at.
A one-star review calling it an ad factory
On 2026 Oct 26, Google Play Singapore: a user gave Astralis one star:
That's not an app, that's actually an add factory.
It's not an isolated case. Of the 33 reviews visible in this storefront, 29 are one-star and nearly all say the same thing: "so many ads", "only ads, waste of time", "add ki dukaan" (Hindi, "ad shop"), "faltu he" and "very bakwas app" (Hindi, "useless"). The rest complain about features: "I'm Aries, the app shows Scorpio" (10-15), "tarot won't open", "can't delete my account". One review from Sep 17 sums up the business best:
Whether it's accurate, nobody knows, but the ads are really making money.
What it is: an "astrology dashboard" that runs on interstitial ads
The first line of the store page is "Astralis is your personal astrology dashboard". Enter your birth date, time and place and it produces a natal chart with Sun, Moon and Rising signs; there are also compatibility scores with other people, live planetary positions and moon phases, and a daily tarot card. The description ends with "for entertainment only".
No in-app purchases, store page marked "Contains ads"; version 1.0.2, no updates since September (Google Play store page, 11-06). The support email is a personal Gmail, the website is a single page on Netlify, and its images sit in a public asset folder called webapps-assets.pages.dev/apptest-natalchart-astralis. The sister app Astraea's website images are in the same folder, at apptest-astro-astraea (11-06 open both websites to check).
The developer account used to publish is PNS E&C COMPANY LIMITED. Vietnamese business registration shows a construction company founded in Hanoi in 2017 with a Korean legal representative; its website covers industrial plants, ports and dams. The same account also hosts a short-drama app and a Vietnamese pharmacy management app. Publishing under a real company's credentials lets you skip the individual-account requirement of 12 testers for 14 days, and if one account is banned you can switch to the next company. This is a common Vietnamese app-factory tactic (inference, based on "construction company + personal Gmail + three unrelated apps").
Scale: it grows in waves

| 09-25 | About 100k |

| 11-06 | 341,605 |
(Figures before 11-06 are AppstoreSpy estimates; 11-06 onward are Google Play installs)
The shape of the curve says more than the numbers: it isn't a smooth climb but rises for two days, pauses for two. Last week was like that: 10-31 was +22k in a single day, 11-01 and 11-02 were two days at 0; 11-03 was +31k, then 11-04 dropped back to 0 (Google Play daily installs). From Oct 5 to 7 there was also a three-day stall. Organic word of mouth doesn't move like this; batch-by-batch paid ads with a set budget do (inference).
On the charts, it hit #10-31 on Singapore's Lifestyle Top Free, peaking at #4, and even charted in Singapore's overall app chart at #137–#173. UAE Lifestyle #15–#37, Malaysia #33–#39, Saudi Arabia #71–#139. As of 11-06 it was #13 in Singapore, #37 in the UAE, #139 in Saudi Arabia, and still sliding.
Where users come from: buying South Asian traffic, pushing small-country charts
There's a mismatch here: the ranks are in Singapore, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but the reviews are in Hindi and Urdu. The most likely explanation is that it bought cheap traffic from South Asia and the Gulf (large South Asian expat populations there). The volume isn't big, but it's enough to push the Lifestyle charts in small countries like Singapore and the UAE. An app in the top 40 of Singapore's Lifestyle chart might add only a few thousand to tens of thousands of installs a week (inference; it's also possible Play returns reviews by language across regions, unverified).
Its own ad creative wasn't found. But PopReel, a short-drama app from the same batch of Vietnamese accounts (300+ million installs), had 40 video ads running in the Meta ad library in the first week of November, which suggests the factory behind it has a mature ad team.
Beyond that, there's nothing: no one on TikTok or X has mentioned it, no media coverage, no creators, no fake reviews. Its rating is so bad that Play doesn't display it, and it keeps spending anyway. Interstitial ads don't need users to stick around: install once, open a few times, watch a few full-screen ads, and part of the spend is already recouped.
Who's competing: same-template siblings growing even faster
Astrology is one of the most crowded categories on Play. Searching astrology, tarot and birth chart over the last 7 days, Astralis ranks about #30 among the top 40 in growth. The most useful things to watch aren't the big players but the look-alikes:
| App | Developer account | Launched | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astralis: Natal Chart & Astro | PNS E&C (construction company) | 08-21 | 342k | +66k |
| Astraea: Astrology & Chart | HOA BINH (construction trading company) | 09-21 | 319k | +205k |
| Astrology: Palm Reader & Tarot | Kienmaly Mobi | 10-12 | 585k | +317k |
| Zeva: Daily Tarot Card Reading | Kienmaly Mobi | 09-23 | 588k | +92k |
| Horae: Tarot & Daily Horoscope | Nuclear Man | 10-12 | 146k | +86k |
(Google Play installs, 11-06)
All five are small Vietnamese accounts with websites named "name-astrology / tarot.netlify.app", all published between 8 and October, all with Greek-mythology star-themed names. Astraea launched a month later, has nearly caught up in installs, and is growing 3 times as fast as Astralis this week. One level up, DN Solutions' "Natal Chart: Astro Horoscope", launched in May, is the same birth-chart tool with ads and already has 4.04M installs.
The real big money comes from a different model. India's Astrotalk (115M installs) sells per-minute consultations with human astrologers; Reva and Astro99 sell AI astrologer chats; Co-Star and Nebula in the West sell brand and subscriptions. Astralis isn't in the same race as these.
How well known is it?
Almost no one outside the circle knows about it. It only appears on aggregator pages like AppBrain and appfigures, and none of its revenue is public. But within the circle of people doing this, the path is already crowded. The table above is the evidence, and the late entrants are growing faster.
If it were you
Verdict: you can learn a playbook from it, but copying it isn't worth it. Astralis didn't succeed on the product. It succeeded on three things: a template you can duplicate every month, an ad team that buys cheap traffic, and a batch of company accounts to rotate through. The product has zero differentiation, there are already four same-template siblings, and most of them launched later and grew faster.
Who it suits: teams already running utility-app paid acquisition across Vietnam, India and Pakistan, with ad monetization and buying capacity in place, treating astrology as one more template in a matrix.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers hoping to build a single app into a business; anyone who can't buy ads or can't work out cost per install versus ad revenue; anyone who cares about ratings, retention and brand. Ratings on this path will collapse.
How to do it:
- Copying it is pointless. Do what it does badly: its one-star reviews, beyond "too many ads", complain about "wrong sign", "tarot won't open" and "can't delete my account". A natal chart app that gets the chart right and keeps ads restrained (say, rewarded video only, no app-open or interstitial spam) could earn better ratings and retention from the same paid-acquisition audience (inference).
- Change the audience: Hindi and Urdu users make up most of the reviews, yet all these templates use English interfaces and Western charts. Native-language Vedic astrology and daily horoscopes aren't offered by any of these templates. The cost is competing on content depth with established players like Astrotalk and AstroSage.
- Borrow its chart strategy: the Lifestyle free charts in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Singapore have low entry barriers, and a few tens of thousands of installs can get you into the top 20, buying a little extra exposure.
How to acquire users: small batches of app-install ads targeting South Asia and the Gulf, pausing for two days after each batch to check payback before deciding the next batch; creative that says "enter your birthday, see your chart instantly".
Deadline: no clear deadline. This batch of templates launched mostly between 9 and October and is still accelerating; the later you go, the more crowded it gets.
What would mean you read it wrong:
- By year-end, Astralis and its siblings stopped growing and fell off the charts one after another, which shows ad revenue didn't cover acquisition costs. The math doesn't work, so there's no need to study it.
- Strangely, the same factory is still shipping new apps on the same template in December, which means the numbers work. The template matrix is a business in itself, and teams with paid-acquisition chops should study it closely.
- These borrowed company accounts were mass-banned by Google. The account route is closed, so the premise of this playbook is gone.

Channel: Google Play | Developer account: PNS E&C COMPANY LIMITED (Hanoi, Vietnam) | Listed: 2026-08-21 | Research date: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This isn't a astrology app that won on its product. It's a templated ad-arbitrage product from a Vietnamese app factory: listed under the Play organization account of a company unrelated to software (a construction contractor), built on one "astrology dashboard" template, and bought in batches with low-cost traffic from South Asia and the Gulf, then monetized through interstitial ads. At least 4 other sister apps on the same template and playbook were growing on the same charts at the same time, some faster than it. Its "differentiation" is nearly zero. The real moat is paid-acquisition and monetization efficiency.
1. Data: how it grew
Source: googleplay database (app_profile / app_day / chart_rank, collected daily from 2026-10-29); the curve since listing comes from app_day_ext (estimated by AppstoreSpy).
| Date | Total installs | Notes |

| 2026-11-06 | 341,605 | 7-day change +65,809 (app_profile) |
- Growth comes in bursts: several days of sharp rises (1~20k a day), followed by stretches of near-zero growth (e.g. 10-05~10-07, 10-29~10-30, 11-01~11-02). That looks like budget-paced batch buying, not the smooth curve of organic word of mouth.
- Charts (chart_rank): best free Lifestyle position in Singapore #4 (10-31), and it has charted in the Singapore overall top apps at #137~173. UAE Lifestyle 15~37, Saudi Arabia 71~139, Malaysia 33~39, Canada 173~200. 11-06 it's Singapore 13 / UAE 37 / Saudi Arabia 139, and sliding.
- Monetization (app_snap): no in-app purchases (offers_iap = False), labeled "contains ads" (ad_supported = True); no updates after version 1.0.2,2026-09-17. The Play page shows "100K+ downloads"; the rating is not shown (ratings is empty in the database).
- Reviews (Singapore store sample of 33 reviews): almost all 1-star, with lines like "so many ads", "add factory", "add ki dukaan" (Hindi: ad shop), "bakwas / faltu" (Hindi: nonsense), "bavaseer hay ads ka" (Urdu), plus "I'm Aries and the app says Scorpio", "tarot won't open", and "can't delete my account". The users are clearly from India and Pakistan, even though the reviews were pulled from the Singapore store. That points to traffic from paid acquisition aimed at that audience, not organic search from Singapore.
2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

Sister apps on the same template and playbook (the most important finding) In the googleplay database app table, these apps all share the same kind of landing page, "<name>-astrology/tarot.netlify.app", their developers are small Vietnamese accounts, they were listed between 2026-08 and 10, and they all charted on the same batch of small-country Lifestyle charts:
| App | Developer account | Launched | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days | Best chart position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astralis: Natal Chart & Astro | PNS E&C COMPANY LIMITED | 08-21 | 341,605 | +65,809 | Singapore Lifestyle 13 |
| Astraea: Astrology & Chart(astraea-astrology.netlify.app) | HOA BINH PRODUCTION - CONSTRUCTION AND TRADING | 09-21 | 319,363 | +205,429 | UAE Lifestyle 8 |
| Astrology: Palm Reader & Tarot(astrology-horoscope.netlify.app) | Kienmaly Mobi | 10-12 | 585,243 | +316,754 | Vietnam Lifestyle 8 |
| Zeva: Daily Tarot Card Reading(zeva-tarot.netlify.app) | Kienmaly Mobi | 09-23 | 588,232 | +92,319 | Singapore Entertainment 101 |
| Horae: Tarot & Daily Horoscope(horae-tarot.netlify.app) | Nuclear Man | 10-12 | 146,166 | +85,879 | Vietnam Lifestyle 31 |
Astraea and Astralis even share the same package-name format (com.astraea.horoscope.natalchart.zodiac / com.astralis.natal.horoscope.astrology). Both take names from Greek myth or star vocabulary, and both bundle natal chart, synastry, moon phases and tarot. Astraea launched a month later, has nearly caught up on installs, and is growing 3x as fast as Astralis over the last 7 days.
Name clash: there is another app called "Astralis Global Astrology App" (astralis.global, package com.astralis.astrology, TikTok @astralis_en, 24 followers). It is a different product, so don't confuse the two.
On the Dexy Labs "Gatara Natalna Karta Horoskop" reskin mentioned in the recall: it's a Serbian-language astrology app from Dexy Labs (play.google.com com.dexylabs.gatara, privacy page on fishinggames.us). We found no evidence it shares a template with Astralis, so this report does not count it as a copycat. The webapps-assets.pages.dev/apptest-natalchart-astralis landing page from the recall also did not turn up in this search (unverified).
3. Growth levers: where users come from
- Paid acquisition (inferred, strong evidence, no direct creatives captured)
- The curve is bursty, with several 2~3-day stretches of zero growth, consistent with budget-paced batch buying.
- The reviews are in Hindi and Urdu, but the charts are in Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. This looks like cheap South Asian paid acquisition plus Gulf traffic, pushing small-country Lifestyle charts up. Lifestyle charts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia have a lot of South Asian expats, so the bar is low. Over the last 7 days, the top 40 Lifestyle apps on the Singapore chart added only a few thousand to tens of thousands of installs.
- The sister PopReel (same HOA BINH account, short dramas, 3.06M installs) has 40 live video ads in the Meta Ad Library (page "Watch Drama Free", seen 11-01~11-07), which shows this factory has a mature Meta buying team. Astralis itself is not on our Meta / Google / TikTok ad tracking list, so not finding it there doesn't mean it isn't running ads.
- No influencer or organic content mentioning this Astralis turned up on TikTok or X (TikHub search, x-radar 60 days 0 posts).
- Store search / small-country chart spots (secondary, inferred): keyword-stuffed titles (Natal Chart / Astro / Horoscope). Charting in Singapore's Lifestyle top 10 brings a bit of chart exposure, but based on the reviewer profile, most users aren't locals.
- Borrowed org account (distribution infrastructure, evidenced): PNS E&C is a civil construction company run by a Korean national (legal rep JANG JAE HO) in Hanoi (founded 2017, tax ID 0201814520, website pnsenc.com lists industrial construction / ports / dams; sources masothue.com, dauthau.net, emis.com). Its Play developer account, however, publishes an astrology app, a short-drama app (ArcReel: Pocket Drama, 50k+) and a Vietnamese pharmacy management app (PharmaTrack, 10+), with a personal Gmail support address [email protected]. The HOA BINH "production-construction-trading" company account also publishes astrology and short-drama apps, with a personal Gmail too. This is a common Vietnamese app-factory practice: register a Play organization account using a real company's D-U-N-S number, which sidesteps the personal-account requirement of 12 testers for 14 days. If one account gets banned, another takes its place, spreading the risk.
- Not found: media coverage, celebrities, Reddit / HN, Product Hunt, SEO content sites, free-promo chart pushes, or fake reviews (quite the opposite: the rating is so poor that Play doesn't display it).
4. Why it took off
- The demand is already there: astrology / tarot has big ad-buying pools and cheap CPMs in South Asia, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and big players on Play's Lifestyle charts like Astrotalk, Reva and Astro99 keep educating users to "read your birth chart on your phone."
- The product bar is very low: birth chart calculation relies on open-source ephemeris libraries, and moon phases / tarot are static content. A netlify landing page plus a template app can be cloned in a month (Astraea launched a month later using the same stack).
- Monetization runs on interstitial ads. It doesn't need users to stick around or leave good reviews: install once, watch a few full-screen ads, and it earns back part of its cost. So 1-star reviews and no rating don't stop it from keeping on buying installs.
- Scale comes from money and accounts: staged ad spend plus borrowed company accounts, not from the product or content.
5. Differentiation
- Compared with branded astrology apps (Co-Star, Nebula, Astrotalk), it has no brand, no social features, no human or AI astrologers, and no subscription. "Completely free, with everything in one app" is its only selling point.
- Compared with its sister template apps, there's almost no difference: only the name, icon and package ID changed.
- Bottom line: differentiation isn't why it took off. It took off because of the factory's ad-buying efficiency and the math of "ad revenue > acquisition cost." Whether that math stays positive long term, we can't see from the data.
6. How many people can see it
- Almost no one knows about it: it only shows up on aggregator pages like AppBrain, CNET Download and appfigures / apiplay. No media, X or TikTok discussion, and no public revenue.
- Copycats: sister apps from the same factory / template, Astraea, Horae, Zeva and Astrology: Palm Reader & Tarot, are already on the same charts, and most launched later and are growing faster. So this route has long been run in bulk by a group of Vietnamese teams, and Astralis is just one of them.
7. What others can borrow
- The combo of "small-country category charts + cheap South Asia / Gulf traffic": the UAE, Saudi and Singapore Lifestyle charts have low entry barriers, and tens of thousands of installs can get you into the top 20, earning a bit of chart exposure.
- A template matrix: the same code with different names, icons and package IDs, spread across different accounts, betting that a few of them pay back.
- But be clear about the cost: ratings collapse and users don't stick around, so it survives mainly on the gap between ad eCPM and acquisition cost. Google bans accounts for borrowed company accounts and excessive ads.
8. Still unclear
- There's no direct evidence of which channels it buys (Google UAC / Meta / Unity / Mintegral) or at what unit cost. It isn't on our ad tracking list.
- Whether ad revenue covers acquisition cost (there is no revenue data at all).
- Whether the PNS E&C account was bought or rented, or whether the company is incubating software businesses itself. We only have the signals: a civil construction firm, a personal Gmail, and three unrelated apps.
- Why almost all Singapore-store reviews come from South Asian users: it could be that the ad targeting itself is South Asian diaspora, or that the Play reviews endpoint mixes regions under the en language filter. Not verified.
