Under 1,800 installs, yet steady at #15 on South Korea's Top Grossing chart: FlipToc turns fortune tellers into a TikTok-style app
What it is A Korean app for live fortune readings with real people: you scroll short videos of fortune tellers like TikTok, skip the booking, and join a 1:1 video call queue that charges by the minute. After each session you get an AI summary, with multilingual subtitles.
Why it took off The Korean Lifestyle Top Grossing chart has a low bar. Live readings charged by the minute carry a high average ticket, so a few dozen paying users are enough to reach the top 20. Those users mostly come from the tellers who joined (including fortune-telling show contestants who appeared on Disney+), bringing their own clients, plus a press push in October and a booth at a fortune expo.
CHow you could follow it To copy its cold-start approach: first sign up a group of service providers who bring their own clients, and let them pull in customers with invite codes, free vouchers, and offline booths. Buy rank on the category Top Grossing chart with in-app purchases, and skip the platform fee by topping up on the website. If you don't have fortune tellers of your own, don't build this.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-30 · 11-07 installs 1,789
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
FlipToc (플립톡) is an app from October, a startup in Seoul. You swipe vertically through short fortune-teller videos like TikTok, skip the booking, join a 1:1 video call queue, and pay by the minute. It has only 1,789 installs worldwide, yet it sat at #15–17 on the Korean Google Play Lifestyle Top Grossing chart for nine days straight. This isn't because it took off. The chart has a low bar, live readings charged by the minute carry a high ticket, and a group of TV fortune tellers brought their own clients. Below, I explain where its money and people come from, what can be learned, and why it's not worth copying.
One booth, 50 books
From Oct 29 to Nov 1, the second fortune expo was held at the Seoul Aram aT Center, with about 150 consultants and 90 booths. FlipToc had a booth at A42, where visitors received a 20k won App coupon and a tote bag.
At the booth sat 메타명리 준쌤 (Meta Jun), a Four Pillars teacher who appeared on Disney+'s fortune-teller contest 《운명전쟁49》. He wrote on Instagram that the 50 copies of his book 《운테크》 prepared for the booth "sold out in no time". For those who didn't get a copy, he signed their shopping bags. "I met about 100 people, from working teachers and university students to fans of 《운명전쟁49》." On the last day, Nov 1, at 3 pm, he added a session with about 20 more books. In the post he called himself "FlipToc's chief ambassador" and said FlipToc is "an affiliate of the SK Group." According to the press release, the more accurate description is that an SK Networks executive invested personally.
Installs on Google Play jumped twice in those few days: 11-01 +218,11-03 +456 (including 11-02). After the expo ended, it went back to a few dozen a day.
What it sells
The store page is blunt about the four steps:
- Discover: full-screen vertical swipe, with a short video introduction from each teller;
- Price first: each master sets their own per-minute Cash rate, shown before you enter;
- Queue up: top up Cash, and when your turn comes, the 1:1 video starts;
- Replay: after the session you get a chat summary, so you can find what the master said.
Categories are tarot, Four Pillars, shamanic readings (gut-mu) and face reading. The press release also mentioned a few other things: real-time subtitles in 60 languages, and AI that splits each consultation into three stages (voice, transcript, summary), with a "Flip AI" on top that can answer questions. The platform has about 200 masters. Onboarding is reviewed, a intro video is required, and quality is kept in check by user ratings.
Pricing: in the app, 10k Cash sells for ₩13,000 (the cheapest tier is $9.49, the most expensive $109.99). You can also top up on the website, with six tiers from ₩10k to ₩500k, bypassing the store. In October 11, a third-party site's store listing still said "2,000 Cash per minute, flat rate"; it's now per-master pricing. At the old flat rate, one minute is about $1.9, so a 20-minute chat runs roughly $38 (estimate). New users get 20k Cash for finishing the tutorial, and the press release advertises 15 free minutes of consultation.
Why it reached the bestseller chart with fewer than 1,800 installs
Because the Korean Lifestyle bestseller chart is not crowded to begin with. Here are its neighbors on Google Play's Korea Lifestyle top grossing chart on 11-06:
| Rank | App | Total installs | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| #7 | 호리 | About 23k | AI fortune telling, launched 2026-03 |
| #11 | 섯다래군 | About 9.6k | |
| #12 | 아임미리 | About 110k | AI fortune telling |
| #15 | FlipToc | 1,789 | Live video fortune telling |
| #16 | 사주GPT | About 116k | AI fortune telling |
| #20 | 김귀자 할머니 | About 73k | AI fortune telling |
| #34 | 천명(Chunmyung) | About 154k | Established live consultation platform |
An app with ten thousand installs can rank #11, which suggests that landing in the top 20 takes only a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a day (inferred). Live consultations are billed per minute, so one paying user chatting for half an hour is worth tens of dollars. That means a few dozen paying users is enough to hold FlipToc around #15 (inferred).
Where those paying users come from is also clear: mostly the masters' existing clients. Masters post "I've joined FlipToc" on their own Instagram and Threads. Some write "Most of my one-on-one readings are now on FlipToc, I can show you the cards I drew," some attach 15-minute free coupons to their onboarding posts, some announce "energy readings on FlipToc from 4 to 8," and one wrote that Jo Yun-a from *Possessed Love* consulted them on FlipToc. These people were already paying this master; now they just pay through a different platform.
Conversely, Cheonmyeong only ranks #34, yet media report its annual revenue at ₩9.9B. Most revenue at older platforms like this comes through the web, 060 phone calls and their own payments, not the store charts. FlipToc also sells top-ups on its website, so the chart shows only part of its revenue.
Where users come from: all offline and personal networks
Here is a ranking of the acquisition tactics I could verify:
- Masters bring their own clients (confirmed): among the roughly 200 masters onboarded are people who appeared on *Fate War 49* and *Possessed Love*. Each posts an onboarding announcement and free coupons, and the website has master referral codes.
- A press wave (confirmed): from October 26 to 27, six or seven Korean outlets including newstap, Seoul Economic TV and acrofan ran nearly identical stories on the same day. The hook was the founder: a KAIST graduate, former Nexon engineer on MapleStory, and former founder of the K-pop platform MyMusicTaste, which he has since exited.
- Offline expos and launch events (confirmed): the booth mentioned at the top, plus a launch event that a master attended and filmed as a Reel.
- New-user incentives (confirmed): 20k Cash or 15 free minutes.
- TikTok and X: basically none. The official TikTok account has 6 followers and 18 videos; X returns nothing for it in the past 60 days.
- Paid acquisition: not verified. Its Facebook page has several English posts that read like ad copy ("Six Korean masters… Finish the quick tutorial and get…"). Whether any were actually boosted is unknown.
Its "US-first" and "K-Fortune going global" pitch has no data behind it yet. 11-06 It sits on the lifestyle grossing charts in 15 overseas countries, but only at ranks 125–148, the tail of the chart, which doesn't prove there's real overseas revenue.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs from FlipToc |
|---|---|---|
| 천명 | 154k installs on Play, annual revenue ₩9.9B (per media reports) | Phone and chat consultations plus a review list, no video feed, domestic only |
| Saju Cheongung, Soultalk, Hongcafe and others | Saju Cheongung, 357k installs on Play | 060 The old phone-call model, finding masters through a directory |
| Modu-ui GIUN, Botajeom, Chuljang Dosa | Not charted | Already doing live video and voice consultations; FlipToc is not the first "video fortune telling" app |
| Hori, Saju GPT, Jeomsin, Postellar | Jeomsin 17M cumulative downloads | AI or content-based fortune telling: low cost, competing for the same demand |
| Purple Garden (US) | 1,000+ psychics, up to $24.99 per minute | Long-running per-minute video psychic app, masters also have intro videos |
| Astrotalk, InstaAstro (India) | 115M installs, 12.3M installs | Per-minute connection with astrologers in India: a model already proven |
FlipToc did not open a new category. What's new is only packaging: a vertical video feed in place of a list, no booking needed, AI summaries, translated subtitles, and the term "K-Fortune." None of these is why it's making money right now.
If it were you
C: worth studying its cold-start playbook, not worth copying wholesale. FlipToc shows that a few dozen high-ticket paying users can earn a bestseller-chart rank. It does not show that a vertical video feed or translation brings in new users, and it hasn't proven that itself yet.
Who it suits: people who already have a pool of service providers, for example someone who knows a circle of tarot readers, saju experts, counselors or language teachers and can onboard twenty or thirty masters who bring their own clients. Or a team already running a live consultation platform that wants to add a video discovery feed.
Who it doesn't suit: solo indie devs who can write an app but have no masters. This is a two-sided business: without masters, no users come; without users, masters stay away. FlipToc assembled its first wave with TV-famous masters, backing from a conglomerate, press and an expo booth. You probably won't get those. Don't assume "Chinese BaZi going global" is easy to copy either: similar products in India and the US have already reached hundreds of millions of installs.
How to build it: if you do, pick a niche and language where you already have supply, and start with the smallest version: masters' intro videos, per-minute video calls, Cash top-ups, and an AI summary after each session. Don't launch in 60 languages on day one. Keep in-app purchases to chase category bestseller charts, and sell top-ups on your website to skip the store cut for repeat customers. FlipToc's approach on both counts can be copied directly.
How to acquire users: have the masters sell for you. Give each master a referral code and a free first-session coupon, and have them post "I've joined" on their own Instagram, Xiaohongshu and Threads. Then rent a booth at an offline expo or market and have your best-known master sit at it. FlipToc's install curve suggests this one move can bring in several hundred installs, and those people are willing to pay.
When to move: there is no deadline. This business doesn't run on a window; it runs on whether you have that pool of masters.
What would mean you read it wrong: (1) Within the next two or three months FlipToc's installs climb into the tens of thousands while its Lifestyle bestseller rank rises into the top 50 in the US or Taiwan. That would mean vertical video plus translation really does bring in overseas users, and the going-global path is wider than it looks. (2) Its TikTok account or master videos start getting hundreds of thousands of views, showing the video feed can drive acquisition on its own, not just through masters' existing clients. (3) Conversely, if once the expo effect fades it drops out of the Korea bestseller top 20, that would mean those few dozen paying users were the masters' regulars and the platform itself brought no new growth.

FlipToc: K-Fortune Telling (플립톡) research report

One line
South Korea's live-human fortune-telling rooms: a TikTok-style vertical feed of fortune-tellers' short videos. Skip the booking, just queue up for a 1:1-video call, billed per minute in "Cash." After the session, AI produces a transcript and summary, with real-time subtitles in 60 languages. The pitch is to export K-Fortune overseas.
Verdict
It hasn't really taken off. Cumulative global installs have added 1,789,7 over 784 days (googleplay database, 2026-11-06); the iOS Korea store has only 7 ratings (appstore database). It gets charted because the Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing bar is very low, and per-minute paid live consultations carry a high ticket price: a few dozen paying users is enough to hold #14–17 (on Play, it sat at #10-29 to #11-06 most days, #15–17; on iOS Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing, between #14 and #36). Its users come from three places: fortune-tellers bringing in their own clients, the press release sent out in a burst on October 26–27, and the booth at the 10/29–11/1 Seoul Fortune Expo. All three are resource-driven, offline, or teacher-referral distribution. Both jumps in the install curve line up with these events. The #15–125 placements on overseas charts in 148 small countries are just the tail of the aggregate chart and don't mean there is real overseas revenue.
Data (from our library)
- Play cumulative installs (googleplay.app_day / app_day_ext; AppstoreSpy backfilled history): 10-24 834 → 10-26 1,004 → 10-28 1,005 → 11-01 1,223 → 11-03 1,679 (Play record; ext records 1,761) → 11-06 1,789. From 10-28 to 10-31 it barely moved; then 11-01 +218,11-03 +456, after which it went back to a few dozen a day.
- Play Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing: #10-29 17, #10-30 17, #10-31 16, #11-01 15, #11-02~#05 16, #11-06 15.
- Neighbors on the Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing chart the same day (11-06): #7 호리 (AI fortune-telling, 23k installs), #11 섯다래군 (9.6k), #12 아임미리 (110k), #16 사주GPT (116k), #20 김귀자 할머니 (73k). The veteran live consultation platform 천명 (Chunmyung) ranks only #34 (154k). That shows the bar for the top few dozen spots is only a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a day. Platforms like 천명 earn most of their money through web, phone (060), and their own payment rails, which don't show up on the store charts. FlipToc's own site also sells Cash via web top-ups (fliptoc.com/cash, six KRW tiers from 10,000–500,000), so store charts show only part of its revenue.
- iOS (appstore database): Korea launch date 2026-10-07, 4–7 ratings, best Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing rank #14 (10-29, 11-01, 11-05), oscillating between #14 and #36.
- Play first-listed date 2026-07-30 (possibly beta or pre-launch; official launch was October 9).
- In-app purchases $9.49–$109.99 each; latest release notes say "finish the tutorial, get 20,000 Cash"; new users get 15 minutes of free consultation (press release).
- Meta Ad Library (metaads): no FlipToc page or landing page found among the advertisers we track (this database only covers a tracked list, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising). Plenty of players do the same thing: Korea has a long list of live fortune-telling consultation platforms, and the US and India both have mature per-minute paid platforms. FlipToc did not create a new category.
Growth tactics (evidence)
- Fortune-tellers bring their own traffic (confirmed): the platform has about 200 fortune-tellers signed on, including people who appeared on Disney+'s 《운명전쟁49》 (a fortune-teller reality competition that premiered in 2026-02) and 《신들린 연애》, such as 타로아이즈, 메타명리 준쌤, and 도화신녀 (newstap 2026-10-26; @fliptoc.official bio). Fortune-tellers post "I've joined FlipToc" on their own Instagram/Threads, with a free 15-minute voucher or their own handle, to move existing clients over: 위시타로, 연도령, 아이리스타로, plus @bbiyak_soul's "joining celebration event" on Threads. The site also has a referral mechanism for fortune-tellers' invite codes (recall-card records).
- Press releases blasted at once (confirmed): newstap, newsbalance, megaeconomy, globalepic, acrofan and 서울경제TV all ran nearly identical releases from October 26–27. The pitch: "KAIST + MapleStory programmer + founder who exited MyMusicTaste," plus shareholder 최성환, SK Networks 사업총괄 사장.
- Offline Fortune Expo (confirmed): the 2nd Fortune Adventure Fortune Expo ran from 2026-10-29 to 11-01 at aT Center in Yangjae, Seoul, with about 150 consultants and 90 booths. FlipToc was at booth A42, with 메타명리 준쌤 doing a book signing at the booth: 50 books sold out on the spot, meeting about 100 people; a 11-01 session was added later (per their Instagram post). Installs 11-01 +218, 11-03 +456 (including 11-02), timing matches.
- Launch event / venue visit (confirmed): a fortune-teller posted a Reel on Instagram saying "Went to the launch event for 플립톡, Korea's first global K-fortune app."
- New-user bonus (confirmed): 15 minutes of free consultation; 20,000 Cash for finishing the tutorial.
- TikTok / X (largely absent): TikTok @fliptoc.official has only 6 followers and 18 videos (TikHub); x-radar finds no FlipToc mentions in 60 days.
- Paid acquisition (unverified): not in our Meta Ad Library; the English posts on the FB Page read like ad copy.
Why it reaches the top grossing charts
- High ticket price: live humans charge per minute (the fortune-tellers set their own prices), with in-app purchases up to $109.99. A heavy user chatting for half an hour spends tens of dollars.
- Low bar on Korea's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart: an app with about 10k installs can make the top 15, and FlipToc only needs a few dozen paying users.
- Most paying users are already the fortune-tellers' existing clients, who were already paying that fortune-teller. Switching platforms doesn't require convincing them again.
- "Charting in 15 overseas countries" doesn't prove much: those placements are at #125–148, the tail of the aggregate chart. The "US first" pitch has no supporting data yet.
Differentiation
- "Discovery" replacing "search": a TikTok-style full-screen feed of fortune-teller videos. See someone you like, skip the booking, and queue up for a call right away.
- AI consultation records: voice → transcript → summary, then "Flip AI" built on RAG answers questions from the records. They call this DDMS, "Daily Destiny Management System."
- Real-time subtitles/translation in 60 languages, so foreigners can video-call Korean shamans and Four Pillars readers directly.
- The "K-Fortune" packaging borrows the K-pop playbook, selling Korean fortune-telling as a cultural export category.
These differentiators aren't yet where its revenue comes from. Revenue today comes from Korean domestic users and the star-fortune-teller effect: fortune-tellers from Disney+'s competition show, plus the Expo, the same way other Korean live-consultation platforms recruit customers. There's no evidence yet that the vertical feed and translation will actually bring overseas users: overseas chart entries are tail placements on the aggregate chart, and TikTok buzz is nearly nonexistent.
Visibility
Few people know about it yet. Only press releases from second- and third-tier Korean outlets; no English-language media or big X accounts have covered it, and neither TrustMRR nor the founders have disclosed revenue. No copycats spotted.
Takeaways
- A low-barrier category chart plus high-ticket live human service gets you "chart proof" during cold start.
- Supply-side cold start: first sign a batch of fortune-tellers who have TV/competition exposure and their own followers, then let them bring in customers (invite codes, signing-on events, book signings).
- Web top-ups bypass store fees while keeping in-store purchases for chart rankings.
- This model (vertical-swipe masters + per-minute video + AI summaries + translation) can be moved to Chinese bazi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, Japanese fortune-telling, and Indian astrology abroad; but India and the US already have very mature players.
Uncertain
- Real revenue and paying users; what share comes from web top-ups.
- Whether they are running paid ads on Meta and Google.
- Whether there are actual users abroad (US); how much the translation feature is used.
- Whether chart revenue includes masters or internal top-up tests (installs are so low yet the ranking is so stable; possible, but no evidence).
- How many of the "200 masters" are actually online.
