A solo-developer Arabic comic app from Yemen: no paid acquisition, 39k installs in four months, and the playbook works in other languages
What it is An Android reader app that shows Arabic-subtitled fan translations of Korean and Japanese comics to Arabic readers. It has a dark interface, update tracking, and a reader community with comments and follows.
Why it took off The old Arabic comic apps are dated, and Tachiyomi needs sideloading, which is a barrier. This one built a nicer, easier client. Before launch it collected pre-registrations through Telegram and Play, then got two Arabic comic TikTok accounts to post "better than Tachiyomi and Mangamello" videos. It caught on within a week.
BHow you could follow it Pick a language with an active fan-translation scene and weak official reader coverage (Turkish, Vietnamese, Persian, and so on). Follow its sequence: a native, good-looking client plus community, a Telegram countdown plus Play pre-registration, two or three recap accounts posting comparison videos before launch, and rewarded video ads to unlock downloads for monetization.

An individual developer in Sana'a, Yemen, published Atheer Toon (أثير تون) on Google Play, an Arabic reader for Korean and Japanese comics. Its content is about the same as the established rivals, all fan translations by Arabic groups. Its edge is a better client, and its launch week was planned carefully: Telegram warm-up, Play pre-registration, and comparison recommendations from two TikTok comic accounts. Below: how it grew, where the money comes from, who the competition is, and whether the playbook works in another language.
A "better than Tachiyomi" video
On 2026 Jun 25, a Arabic TikTok account with 30K+ followers that does Korean manhwa commentary, @manhwaandmanhua999999, posted a video with a single-line title: "تطبيق أثير تون أفضل من تاتشيومي و مانجاميلو", meaning Atheer Toon is better than Tachiyomi and Mangamello. It hit 239K views. 5 days later, another account with 43K followers, @manhwa_officiale, posted something more like an ad: "Tired of searching for a comfy app? High image quality, amazing translation, download it now", with 247K views and 696 shares. In Jul 16 the first account posted again, with 100K views. The three together add up to about 590K views, all clustered in the three weeks around launch.
The app wasn't on the store yet at the time. Commenters asked where to download it, some said "this is just an ad, the real question is whether you got paid," and others replied "Mihon is 100 million times better." Those are the people it was targeting: Arabic readers who used sideloaded readers like Tachiyomi or Mihon, or read comics on web fan-translation sites.
What it is
An Arabic comic reader app, Android only. It opens in a dark interface with right-to-left layout and offers Arabic fan translations of Korean manhwa, Japanese manga, and webtoons. Features include update notifications, a bookshelf, reading progress sync, reader profiles, mutual follows, and chapter comments. The October 2.0 update added 8 dark themes, auto-scroll, landscape mode, volume-key page turns, "recommended for you," and search with typo correction. Downloads can resume after a dropped connection (see "What's new" on the store page, 10-18 updates).
The developer page lists a single name, with an address in Sana'a. That developer has only this app and isn't running a network of apps.
The numbers: a one-week spike, then a long tail
- Listed on 2026-07-14; open to download on 07-15. Play pre-registration began on 07-11.
- 07-20 installs 6,178, with 4,801 in a single day; passed 07-22 at 10k. Pre-registered users got a push on launch day, and installs came in a burst. The first few days' numbers came almost entirely from that.
- Then it fell back: August ran a few hundred to a thousand installs a day, and 9–October ran 100–300 a day. By 11-06 installs stood at 38,884, up +1,416 over the last 7 days (Google Play installs). The curve stays flat the whole way, with no paid-acquisition spikes.
- 1,737 ratings, 4.8 stars (4.9,1.75K shown on the store page). Rating count is roughly 4.5% of installs; Arabic comic apps in the same category usually sit at 0.5–0.9%. Lately it's gaining a dozen or two ratings a day, while only one or two hundred people install it daily. Likely the app is prompting for ratings in-app; there are zero 3-star ratings in the distribution, which looks odd. Unverified.
- Ranks #13–#75 on the comic free charts across 85 countries. Category charts in small countries have a low bar, so this ranking doesn't say much.
The scale is modest, but with only 1,540 people in its Telegram channel and three TikTok videos, it built a product that still gets a couple hundred organic installs a day.
Why users switched
There are many Arabic comic apps, and this wasn't the first. It took off because each rival has a clear weakness:
| Competitors | Scale (Google Play installs) | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Mangamello | 2.5M, launched 2022 | The leader among Arabic aggregator readers. The product is dated, and it's the one the promo videos compare against. |
| Tachiyomi / Mihon | Open source, requires sideloading | It makes you install extension sources yourself, which mobile users find annoying, and there's no community |
| Swat Manga | 210k | A scanlation group's own app, with only that group's content |
| Manga Library / Manga Player | 600k / 240k | An old-school aggregator with a dated interface |
| Manga Arabia (Saudi SRMG) | 6.69M | Official original manga, no Korean webtoon serialization, different readership |
| WEBTOON, MangaToon Arabic edition | big tech | Official, few Arabic titles, heavy paywall |
| Manga Star | 32k, launched 8-13, +3,111 over the last 7 days | A new reader from the same wave, launched a month later, now growing faster than Atheer |
TikTok comments still mention one called "Manga Slayer", saying it's "better looking and has no ads". Couldn't find it on Google Play, so I'm guessing it's a website or sideloaded app.
User reviews show people using it as a main app. On July 17, a positive review marked helpful by 14 people said "downloads smoothly, pagination works well". In August, someone wrote a long review in Arabic and English: "When reading comics, the screen brightness auto-jumps to max, very glaring." Feedback this detailed is common, and the developer replied to each one.
There's also a longer-term plan: the website has an "أثير تون استوديو" backend where scanlation groups and independent translators can upload chapters, auto-slice long images, manage glossaries, schedule releases, and view analytics. It wants scanlation groups to become suppliers to its own platform, not just scrape other sites' images. Whether this is working yet can't be seen from outside, and I haven't verified how many groups have joined.
Where the money comes from
The store listing says "Contains ads, contains in-app purchases, $3.99–$39.99". The privacy policy says it mainly uses Google AdMob, with Meta and Unity as intermediaries, and Unity is only used for "rewarded ads, such as unlocking downloads". So reading online is free, but to download chapters for offline reading you have to watch a video ad. A review from October 12 complains about exactly this: "Was fine before the update, now I have to watch ads to download chapters." The website and terms say "completely free, with optional paid services possibly coming later". I couldn't find what the in-app purchases actually sell.
Revenue isn't public. Based on this user base, my estimate is a few hundred to a thousand or two a month (inference; ad rates in the Middle East are relatively high). For an individual developer in Sana'a that's a decent income, but not a big business.
Its biggest risk
The content is very likely unlicensed scanlations. Scanlation-site apps across languages get pulled from Play in batches every so often, and this one could be taken down at any time. The website has a formal copyright complaint process that promises a response within 3–5 business days. That blocks some complaints, not all of them.
The other is iPhone. The website says the iOS version is "coming soon", and the most common comment in the TikTok replies is "can't find it on iPhone" and "it says coming soon, I searched and it's not there". That group of users is waiting for someone to serve them, but the App Store reviews this kind of content more strictly and it may not get approved.
If it were you
B. The approach is clear and anyone could copy it, and few people have noticed it yet. The weakness is that you don't own the content, it could be removed by the platform at any time, and the ceiling on ad revenue is low. Good as a small, steady side project, not as a big business.
Who it suits: people with an active scanlation scene in a language they speak or know well, where the official readers have poor coverage. Languages worth a look are Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Persian and Urdu. Indonesian and Spanish already have players, so search Play first. Ideally you read manga in this scene yourself and know a few scanlation groups and commentary accounts. You can build a good native Android client and handle right-to-left layout, long images and offline downloads.
Who it doesn't suit: people who can't handle takedown risk and want a long-term brand; people hoping to earn from subscriptions (this audience is used to free, and watching an ad to download is all they're willing to pay); people outside the scene who can't earn the trust of scanlation groups and commentary accounts.
How to build it: a native Android client that does well where old aggregators like Mangamello fall short: dark mode, new-chapter notifications, progress sync, comments and follows. Then fix what it gets wrong: chapter downloads that don't break, and reader settings for brightness and page turning. Read for free, unlock downloads with rewarded video. From day one, build an upload backend for scanlation groups so content creators want to send their updates to you, and have a copyright complaint process ready.
How to get users: follow its sequence. Start a Telegram channel and post countdowns and screenshots every day for the week before launch. Open Play pre-registration so launch-day installs cluster together. Two or three weeks before launch, get two or three local-language manga commentary accounts to post "better than Tachiyomi / X app" comparison videos, with download links in the comments. Build in a rating prompt in the app, and aim for around 4.8 in the first month.
When to get in before it: this wave of "scanlation sites moving to Play" has been appearing in several languages since 6 2026, and whichever one builds up ratings and reputation in a language first will hold the spot. If you want to follow, launch before Q1 2027, because by later there will likely be two or three already in any given language.
Signs you've misread it: ① Atheer Toon or Manga Star gets removed from Play within six months, meaning the platform is starting to clean this category up and the window is closing; ② its daily installs fall to a few dozen a day, meaning the long tail after launch can't hold; ③ in your chosen language, a search turns up three or more similar apps with ratings of 4.5 or higher, released in the past year; ④ the reverse: if Atheer Toon's iOS version launches smoothly and installs pick up again, it means there's room for this kind of app on the App Store too, and it's worth building for both platforms together.

Whether ratings prompts and promotions were paid is inference and unverified.

Why Atheer Toon (أثير تون) took off
Google Play com.atheertoon.app, COMICS category, listed 2026-07-14. The developer is an individual in Sana'a, Yemen (the store's developer info lists بشار صادق ناصر حسين العمراني, with an address in Sana'a, Yemen), and the developer has only this one app. Research date 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
This is an Arabic scanlation aggregator reader: it built a native client that looks better than established Arabic manga apps (Mangamello and others) and has a community. Before launch it warmed up on Telegram and ran Play pre-registration, then two Arabic manhwa recommender accounts posted promotional videos on TikTok with about 590k views in total, pulling users away from Tachiyomi/Mihon and scanlation websites. It got around 10k installs in its first week, and since then has grown organically by 150–300 installs a day through store search and word of mouth. Money comes from AdMob rewarded video (you watch an ad to download chapters). It's small, and almost nobody outside has written about it.
1. Data (our googleplay library, as of 2026-11-06)
- Installs 38,884 (store page shows the 10K+ tier), +1,416 over the last 7 days, rating 1,737 (4.79 stars).
- Install curve (app_day_ext, history backfilled from AppStoreSpy): 2026-07-20 reached 6,178 (single day +4,801), 07-22 passed 10k, then it dropped off quickly: by August about 200–1,000,9 a day, and by October about 100–300,10/28 a day 37,466. That suggests a one-time launch spike followed by organic long-tail traffic, with no shape of sustained paid acquisition.
- Rating penetration is very high: ratings ÷ installs is about 4.5%, while comparable Arabic apps sit around 0.5–0.9% (Mangamello 23,752/2.5M, Manga Star 293/32k, Swat Manga 1,064/210k). Recently it has been adding 13–28 ratings a day, against only about 150–200 new installs a day over the same period, so roughly one in ten new users rates it. There are only 118 written reviews. Star distribution is [1★15, 2★30, 3★0, 4★199, 5★1483] (app_snap). Most likely an in-app review prompt (Play In-App Review) is firing; the 3-star figure looks a little unnatural for 0, but I haven't verified it.
- Charts: COMICS Top Free charts ranked #75–#85 across 13 countries (us/ar/ng/pl/za/hk/ae/tr/sa/vn/th/nl/sg). Category charts in small countries are often the same aggregated list, and the bar to chart is low, so the ranking alone says little. No Top Grossing signal.
- Monetization: the store listing says "contains ads + in-app purchases $3.99–$39.99/item". The privacy policy (atheertoon.com/privacy-policy, version 2026-10-17) says it mainly relies on Google AdMob, connected through intermediaries to Meta Audience Network and Unity Ads, with Unity used only for "rewarded ads, such as unlocking downloads". A user review also complains that "after the update, you have to watch ads to download chapters" (Totally Monkeq, 2026-10-12). The website and terms both say "completely free, with optional paid services possibly coming later", so what the in-app purchases actually sell is still unknown.
- Third-party estimate: AppInsider puts it at 100+ downloads a day and 5k+ downloads a month, which matches our data.
2. Competitors
| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay database) | How it differs from Atheer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mangamello - مانجاميلو | Android | 2022-12 | 2.5M installs, 24k ratings, +14k over the last 7 days | The leader in Arabic manga aggregation, also relying on scraping scanlation sites. On TikTok, Atheer is directly compared with it, and its selling point is "better looking, smoother to use, has a community" |
| مانجا للشباب / مانجا للصغار(Manga Arabia,SRMG) | Android/iOS | 2021 | 6.69M / 3.84M | Official Saudi original manga, different content and audience, no Korean or Japanese serialization |
| مانجا سوات Swat Manga | Android | 2025-03 | 210k | A scanlation group's (Manga Swat) own app, with only that group's content |
| Manga Library / Manga Player(SOUSSI NIAIMI) | Android | 2023 / 2024 | 600k / 240k | An old-school aggregator with a fairly dated interface |
| Manga Star - مانجا ستار | Android | 2026-08-13 | 32k, +3,111 over 7 days (now growing faster than Atheer) | A new Arabic reader from the same wave, launched a month after Atheer, and the closest thing to a copycat |
| Manga Cloud, مانجا ليك Lek Manga, Manga Time, Manga Wave, 9annas, etc. | Android/Web | 2024–2026 | A few thousand to 30k | small fan-translation site apps or aggregators |
| Tachiyomi / Mihon + keiyoushi extensions | Open source | From ¥2018 | Arabic manhwa recommendation channel tutorial videos hit 500k views | Requires sideloading and installing extension sources, a high bar, with no community. Atheer's promo pitch is "better than Tachiyomi" |
| WEBTOON (NAVER), MangaToon Arabic edition | big tech | 2014 / 2018 | 190M / 370k (Arabic edition) | Official, but thin on Arabic content and heavy on paywalls |
| Same-category apps in other languages (Lectormanga ES, Asura Scans, ToonGod, CrunchyScan, ManhwaIndo) | Android | 2026-06~08 | A few thousand to 100k | In 2026, the same wave of "fan-translation sites going live on Play" hit every language. Atheer is the Arabic-version example |
Bottom line: this category isn't short on competitors, and Atheer isn't the first. What made it take off wasn't "nobody else is doing it," but that it did more of the same thing more completely and marketed it like it meant business.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- TikTok creator recommendations (confirmed, the main driver). TikHub search for "أثير تون / Atheer Toon":
- @manhwa_officiale (43k followers), posted 2026-06-20, 247k views, 8,445 likes, 696 shares. The copy is standard ad language: "إذا تعبت من التدوير على تطبيق مريح، جودة عالية، وترجمة أسطورية… حملوه الحين" (Tired of searching for a comfortable app? High quality, amazing translation… download it now).
- @manhwaandmanhua999999 (33k followers, does manhwa commentary, and the same account also posts Tachiyomi install tutorials, 528k views). 2026-06-25 posted "تطبيق أثير تون أفضل من تاتشيومي و مانجاميلو" (Atheer Toon is better than Tachiyomi and Mangamello), 239k views; 07-16 posted another, 100k views.
- These add up to roughly 590k views, concentrated in the three weeks around launch. There's no direct evidence the promotion was paid, but the copy clearly reads like a written ad script.
- The official account @atheertoon1 has only 1,957 followers and 16 posts, with a single post topping out at 8,442 views. It can't generate much traffic on its own.
- Telegram/Discord warm-up and Play pre-registration (confirmed). t.me/AtheerToon has 1,540 subscribers. In the week before launch it posted pre-registration and countdown messages, each getting roughly 1.5–2.1K views. 07-11 opened Play pre-registration, and 07-15 officially launched. Pre-registered users got push notifications on launch day that drove a concentrated install wave, which explains why it passed 6 thousand installs in its first 6 days.
- Users migrating from Tachiyomi and web fan-translation sites (inferred, fairly credible). The promo copy names Tachiyomi and Mangamello directly, so the target audience is Arabic manhwa readers already using sideloaded readers and fan-translation sites.
- Store search and long tail (inferred). From August on, installs ran 100–300 per day with a steady curve and no paid-acquisition spikes. Arabic keywords like "مانهوا" aren't very competitive, and the high rating (4.8) helps search ranking.
- Rating prompts (inferred). The rating rate is about 5 times that of comparable apps, likely from in-app rating requests, which in turn lifted store conversion.
- Ad spend: Meta and TikTok ad libraries only track listed products, so this one doesn't show up. The install curve shows no sign of sustained paid acquisition.
4. Why it took off
- Timing: In 2026, fan-translation sites in every language were turning their web versions into Play apps (Spanish, Indonesian, and English all had comparable apps listing between 6 and August). After Tachiyomi stopped updating, the bar set by Mihon and extension sources turned away many phone users. Mangamello, the Arabic market leader, is a 2022-year-old product, and people wanted a better-looking new client.
- The product itself: native RTL, dark UI, update notifications, reading progress sync, profile pages, following other readers, and comments. The 2.0 version added 8 themes, auto-scroll, volume-key page turning, a "recommended for you" feed, and resumable offline downloads (see the changelog). The feature requests in reviews are for details like "category shelves" and "double-tap to zoom," and the developer has replied to them, which suggests users are willing to treat it as a primary app.
- How the content supply is structured: atheertoon.com/partners is "Atheer Toon Studio," built for fan-translation groups and independent translators. It lets them upload chapters, auto-split long-strip images, manage glossaries, schedule releases, and view analytics. In other words, it wants to turn translation groups into content suppliers on the platform, not just scrape other people's sites. That's the fundamental difference from a pure aggregator like Mangamello. How many groups have actually joined is unverified.
- Monetization: no subscription. "Watch a rewarded video to unlock downloads" is well accepted by Arabic users, and Middle East eCPMs are relatively high. Actual revenue is unverified.
5. Differentiation
It's also a "fan-translated content reader," but it differs on two levels: (1) experience and community: user reviews, following, profile pages, and co-building through Telegram/Discord, rather than a bare image browser; (2) a distribution platform for translation groups: the Studio back end brings translation groups in as content suppliers, with updates that come "first" (the official site's wording: "يتم تنزيل الفصول الجديدة أولاً بأول"). Point (1) is why the TikTok promotion could credibly say "better than Tachiyomi/Mangamello," and it's directly tied to how the app took off. Point (2) determines whether it can last long term, but no data yet shows it's working.
6. How many people have seen it
- Media or blog coverage: none. Only automatic listing pages from APKPure, AppBrain, Softonic, and AppInsider.
- X (x-radar, past 120 days): 0 mentions. Reddit: no results.
- Revenue isn't public, and there's no TrustMRR record.
- The only spread is in the Arabic TikTok manhwa scene and its own Telegram (1.5K). Conclusion: very few people know about it yet; it's circulating only within a small Arabic manhwa circle.
- Copycats: Manga Star (listed 2026-08-13, 32k installs, 7 days +3,111) is an Arabic reader that appeared in the same period. There's no evidence it copied Atheer, so it's just part of the same wave.
7. What to borrow
- The playbook is replicable: "small language + fan-translation community." Find a language where official readers have poor coverage and the fan-translation community is active (Arabic, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Persian), build a native, good-looking client with community features, warm up on Telegram and open Play pre-registration before launch, then work with 2–3 local manhwa commentary channels on comparison reviews ("better than Tachiyomi"), and monetize with rewarded video.
- On the content side, don't scrape. Build a distribution back end for translation groups (Studio). That ties the content suppliers in and gives a buffer against copyright complaints (the official site has a formal copyright complaint process, promising to respond within 3–5 business days).
- Push rating requests hard: get to 4.8 ratings in the first month, which helps store conversion.
8. Risks and open questions
- The content is most likely unlicensed fan translations, so the risk of Play removal is high (similar Tachiyomi-style and fan-site apps are often delisted).
- Whether the two TikTok recommendation accounts were paid promotion is unverified.
- What the in-app purchases at $3.99–$39.99 actually buy (ad removal? coins?) is unverified.
- The scale of ad revenue is unknown.
- The 3-star rating of 0 with an unusually high rating rate: whether this reflects rating prompts or fake reviews is unverified.
- The official site says the iOS version is "coming soon," and it isn't out yet.
