A Saudi dev spent two years on a manga translator, then moved to Android and now gets a hundred users a day: this niche is already crowded
What it is A manga reader with built-in AI translation: it detects speech bubbles, erases the original text, puts the translation back into the original image, and can plug into Tachiyomi/Mihon extension sources.
Why it's catching on It isn't a new product. The iOS version built a brand and loyal users over two years, and those users brought it to Android. Then people searching "manga translation" in the store find it organically. Free, unlimited on-device translation makes people willing to install it and try.
CHow you could get in Don't build another general manga translation app. Build the part it does badly: a single language or content type that an English-first product can't cover, or a companion translation tool for the Mihon-family readers.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-09 · 11-07 installs 3,961
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
In Sep 2026 15, Jeddah-based indie developer Basel Baragabah posted a TikTok video with one line in Arabic and one in English: "Mangra is finally on Android, download it from Google Play." The video got only 434 views. Seven weeks later, this AI manga translation reader had about 3,961 installs on Google Play, with a steady 70 to 100-plus new people a day and no single day of sudden spikes. The approach is real, but this niche has been crowded for 2026 years. Below: what it is, where its users come from, who's competing, and whether there's still room for you.
What it is
Mangra is a manga reader with built-in AI translation. Open a raw manga, a Korean webtoon, or a vertical scroll comic, and it first finds the speech bubbles, recognizes the text, and translates it. Then a second model erases the original text and puts the translation back into the bubble. The art stays the same, only the words change.
It does more than translate a single image:
- Imports CBZ, RAR, and PDF files, and can open images straight from your photo library;
- One-tap background translation of a whole chapter: while you read page one, the later pages are queued up and translated;
- Edit mode, where you can manually adjust each bubble's position, font, and stroke;
- Exports a translated chapter as a standard CBZ;
- Built-in browser, so you can open any manga site and translate as you scroll;
- Compatible with extension sources from Mihon, Tachiyomi, Tachimanga, and Paperback, and connects to a self-hosted Komga server.
That last point matters most. Heavy manga readers already have a Tachiyomi-family reader on their phone, with their sources, tracked series, and reading progress all there. Mangra doesn't ask them to switch to a new workflow. It plugs translation right into what they already use. In the 2026-07-09 update, TikTok called it "the biggest update."
How it makes money: on-device translation (Google's built-in engine on Android, Apple's on iOS) is free, unlimited, requires no sign-up, and has no ads. A Pro subscription unlocks cloud large models (choose from Gemini, GPT, Grok, DeepSeek, or Qwen), whole-chapter auto-translation, and edit mode. In-app purchases on Play are priced at $3.99–$49.99. The free tier costs nothing in server fees, and the paid tier is the only one that calls the big models, so the math works.
Why people are using it the moment it hits Android
Because it isn't a new product. The iOS version launched in October 2024, and by Oct 24 it had reached v5.1.2, with 102 ratings in the US store averaging 4.2 stars (App Store, 11-06). The website claims "60k+ readers" and "100+ million pages translated per month". Those are self-reported and can't be verified; they're probably cumulative across iOS and Mac over two years.
The TikTok account @manga_translate_app also built up over two years: 1,047 followers and 58 videos. The most-viewed one is an Arabic video from February 2025, "You can now translate manga right on the web," with 360k views. Next is an English video from January 2025, "Breaking the language barrier," with 100k views. This year's videos mostly get a few hundred views, and the September 2 video on background translation has 37k. The announcement that it was coming to Android got 434 views, which suggests TikTok wasn't the main driver of Android installs.
So where are the users coming from? Look at the install curve (Google Play installs, third-party estimates):
| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 9-30 | 671 |
| 10-14 | 2,021 |
| 10-28 | 3,107 |
| 11-05 | 3,961 |
Averaging 70–115 a day, with +853 over the last 7 days, a straight line up. Creator videos don't produce that kind of curve, but store search does. The Play listing uses the category term "Manga Translator" in its title, and the store page is localized into 37 languages. The most likely explanation is organic search, plus iOS veterans who switched to Android phones and installed it (inference).
There's also a foundation in a smaller language community. The developer is in Saudi Arabia, the videos are bilingual Arabic and English, it supports translation into more than 55 languages including Kurdish and Swahili, and the testimonials on the official site are signed faisal400, ZiomekkokO, and Pawel Mazury: one Arabic name and two Polish ones. It serves readers an English-first product can't reach.
Has it broken out on Android? Not yet.
It's only on the Google Play Comics free chart, and its rank is slipping. In the US it started at #70,11-03 in 10-29 and has since dropped off the US chart entirely. Argentina, Nigeria, Poland, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and 12 other storefronts show almost identical rankings (11-06 all around #132–143). That pattern usually means small countries share an aggregated chart, so it doesn't prove real users in those markets. It still has no Play ratings.
Compared with its peers, it sits below fifth place:
| Product | Launched | Play installs (11-06) | Last 7 days | How it differs from Mangra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manga Translator(kandurr) | 2021-07 | 288k | +1,050 | A veteran screenshot translator, not a reader |
| OpenToon | 2026-05 | 105k | +4,335 | Paste links or upload images to translate; 1,261 ratings in the US iOS store, and a more aggressively localized multilingual store page |
| IsManga | 2022-03 | 80k | +977 | Single-purpose translation tool |
| Madomi | 2025-07 | 58k | +1,613 | Most similar: a reader with AI translation, available on Android, iOS, Chrome, and Firefox |
| Screen & Manga Translator | 2025-08 | 13k | — | Floating window that translates the screen |
| Mangra | 2026-09 | 3,961 | +853 | Most complete feature set, with extension source and Komga support |
That's before counting MangaX AI, EasyComix, ToonFlow, MangaLens, MiaoView, and Mangit, which all appeared within the last 2026 years and have only a few hundred to a few thousand installs. It also leaves out browser immersive translation tools like Immersive Translate and Torii, and free GitHub projects like comic-translate and manga-image-translator. OpenToon, which launched in May this year, added five times as many users per week as Mangra.
The demand is real: people reading raw manga have long had to wait for fan translation groups, and over the past 2025–2026 years large-model translation, bubble erasure, and automatic text placement have matured enough to do it all in one tap. That same ease is why everyone can build it.
Is anyone talking about it?
Not much. No one has mentioned it on X in 60 days, there's no press coverage, and no public revenue figures. What I could find: a reply on r/manga from May 2025 saying "Try Mangra, a well-made iOS/iPadOS app that supports 5 AI models…" (the tone suggests the developer or someone close to them wrote it, inference); a few listings in AI tool directories; and a comparison article from competitor Mangit in 10-25 that names it as the representative Apple-platform app. Its target users spend a lot of time in places like r/mangapiracy, the communities where people read pirated manga.
If it were you
C: worth learning from, but don't build another manga translation app. Over the past 2026 years this niche has grown to a dozen-plus players. The top tier wins on being first and on scale, and Mangra, with the most complete features, still ranks fifth or lower.
Three things worth learning: plug AI into tools users already use (Tachiyomi extensions, Komga) so they don't have to change their workflow; make the free tier run on the phone's built-in translation engine for zero cost and no limits, and sell cloud large models only in the paid tier; and once you've matured on one platform, bring your established brand and users to another.
Who it fits: developers who are already heavy Mihon/Tachiyomi users and understand that extension ecosystem, or people whose native language is one an English-first product doesn't cover (Arabic, Turkish, Polish, Vietnamese, and similar), who can judge translation quality themselves.
Who it doesn't fit: anyone who wants to build a general "screenshot manga translation" tool, since kandurr and OpenToon already occupy that slot; anyone hoping to earn big money here, since users mostly sit in piracy communities and willingness to pay is naturally low (inference); and anyone unwilling to work in the copyright gray zone, since most sources in this category come from pirate sites and the stores could tighten at any time.
How to build it: don't start from scratch with a full reader. Build the part Mangra does badly. First, focus on one language and one content type (for example, only Korean webtoons into Arabic, or only vertical-scroll comics into Vietnamese), and make that language's fonts, typesetting, and glossaries the best available. Second, build on top of open-source readers in the Mihon family, for instance as a companion translation tool, instead of making yet another full reader; users are already there, so acquisition is easier (inference: how deep you can integrate depends on how many APIs those readers expose). Third, go after the Android experience Mangra hasn't nailed: its site says collections and folders are still missing on Android.
How to acquire users: put category keywords in your store title and localize the store page into your target language; post before-and-after translation comparison videos in Reddit manga communities, Discord fan-translation groups, and TikTok in your target language. Its most-viewed video, with 360k views, is simply an Arabic feature demo.
When to get in early: no rush, and no need to race anyone. There's no window here, only a grid that's already full.
What would mean I got this wrong: ① Mangra's Play installs pass 20k in the next month, or its daily growth multiplies, which would suggest "full features plus book source support" is a real differentiator on Android and a deeper bet on that path is worth revisiting; ② OpenToon's weekly new installs fall to a few hundred, which would suggest the whole category has peaked, so don't enter; ③ Google Play starts delisting manga apps that connect to pirated sources, which would close this path for everyone.
Data and sources: Google Play store page and install counts (third-party estimates, as of 11-06); App Store lookup (iOS app id 6502868308,11-06); official site manga-translate.app (11-06); TikTok @manga_translate_app profile and videos (11-06); public posts on Reddit r/manga and r/mangapiracy; mangit.app comparison article (10-25). Places marked "inference" or "estimate" are inferences and estimates.

Why Mangra - Manga Translator (com.basel.mangra) managed to take off
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Basel Studio (the same developer as the iOS app, Basel Baragabah, an indie iOS developer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) | Play launch 2026-09-09 | Research day 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This is not a cold start for a new product. It is a manga AI translation reader that has been on iOS for two years (iOS launched 2024-10, v5.1.2), ported to Android. Its Android installs come from its established brand, its old TikTok account, multilingual store pages, and store search for the keyword "manga translation", bringing in a steady 70–115 a day with no breakout moment. Volume is still small (3,961 total). On Play it ranks behind the older players OpenToon (105k), kandurr (288k), IsManga (80k) and Madomi (58k), so the space is already crowded. What sets it apart is how complete the feature set is: it can connect to Mihon/Tachiyomi/Paperback extensions and a self-hosted Komga source; on-device translation is free and unlimited; five cloud LLMs are selectable; and the UI is available in 37 languages. These are why it kept users on iOS, but they have not yet proven it can break out on Android.
1. Data
- Install curve (googleplay library app_day + app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 9-30 at 671 → 10-07 at 1,216 → 10-14 at 2,021 → 10-21 at 2,624 → 10-28 at 3,107 → 11-04 at 3,798 → 11-05 at 3,961. Daily installs have stayed between 69 and 115, very flat, with no spikes, suggesting no single promotion or creator video pushed volume up. 7-day new installs: 853.
- Chart position: only charted in the COMICS free category chart. 10-29 #70 in the US store, dropped out of the US store from 11-03. Argentina, Nigeria, Poland, Turkey, Hong Kong, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands and Vietnam all show almost identical ranks (around #100–143) that move in lockstep across 12 countries. This is the typical pattern of Play's small-country category charts sharing one aggregated chart, and does not mean it has real users in those countries. Its rank slid from about #100 on 10-29 to about #132–143 on 11-06, a slow decline.
- Ratings: no rating count on Play yet (ratings empty). The iOS version has 102 ratings with an average of 4.23 (iTunes lookup, us).
- Monetization: Play in-app purchases $3.99–$49.99. The official site says "on-device translation is free and unlimited; the Pro subscription unlocks cloud AI, full-chapter auto-translation and edit mode". No grossing chart ranking.
- Official claims (manga-translate.app): 60K+ readers, 1M+ pages translated per month, 55+ target languages, 37 UI languages, rating 4.1★. These are self-reported and unverified. The 60K is most likely the cumulative total across iOS and Mac over two years.
2. Competitors (check these first)
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Mangra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manga Translator - Translate(kandurr,com.wiryaimd.mangatranslator) | Android | 2021-07 | 288k installs, +7 in 1,050 days (googleplay library) | Established, positioned as a screenshot/image translation tool rather than a full reader plus source-integration app |
| OpenToon - Manga Translator(OpenNovel / Decade Labs) | Android + iOS | 2026-05 | Play 105k installs, +7 in 4,335 days; iOS US store 1,261 ratings, with multiple localized store pages by language (appstore library) | A newcomer in the same period, growing 5× faster; its approach is pasting links or uploading images to translate; its "multilingual store page" volume play is more aggressive than Mangra's |
| Manga Translator - IsManga | Android | 2022-03 | 80k installs, +977 in 7 days | Single-purpose translation tool |
| Madomi(Pawaka Labs) | Android/iOS/Chrome/Firefox | 2025-07 | Play 58k installs, 7 days +1,613 | Closest to Mangra: reader + local files + AI translation, with broader multi-platform coverage |
| Screen & Manga Translator(COSMOMIME) | Android | 2025-08 | 13k installs | Floating window for on-screen translation |
| MangaX AI, EasyComix, Comiglot, ToonFlow, MangaLens, MiaoView, Mangit | Android/iOS | 2025–2026 | A few hundred to a few thousand installs | A flood of similar small products that appeared over the past 2026 years |
| Torii, Scan Translator, Immersive Translate | Browser extensions / web | 2023–2025 | Immersive Translate is a big-company-level product | Translates directly on web pages, mainly on PC |
| ogkalu2/comic-translate, meangrinch/MangaTranslator, manga-image-translator (Cotrans) | Open source | 2022– | Popular projects on GitHub | Free, runs locally, but you have to tinker |
Verdict: others got there first, and the space is clearly crowded over the past 2026 years (more than a dozen similar apps listed in the appstore/googleplay libraries in the last 2026 years). On Android, Mangra is a latecomer, ranking behind #5 in scale.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Legacy users and brand migration to Android (confirmed): the TikTok account @manga_translate_app posted a "Mangra is finally on Android" video on 2026-09-15 (in Arabic and English). iOS users had been asking for an Android version for a while, and the reputation built over two years on iOS, plus the self-reported 60k readers, seeded the Android launch.
- TikTok owned account (confirmed, but recent results are weak): 1,047 followers, 24k likes, 58 videos. The most-viewed were the web translation update from 2025-02 (360k views) and one from 2025-01 (100k). 2026-09-02 had one video with 37k views. But the post announcing the Android launch got only 434 views, and recent videos are getting a few hundred views (TikHub). So TikTok is not the main driver of Android installs.
- Started in the Arabic market (confirmed): the developer is in Saudi Arabia, the TikTok copy is bilingual Arabic and English, and the iOS store name includes an Arabic version, "تطبيق Mangra - ترجمة مانجا". Reviews on the official site include faisal400 (an Arabic name), ZiomekkokO and Pawel Mazury (a Polish name). This matches its Play coverage (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Poland), but the Play category chart is an aggregated chart, so you can't conclude from it alone.
- Store search / ASO (inferred, most likely the main driver): the Play title uses the category keyword "Manga Translator", and the store page is localized in 37 languages. Daily installs are steady with no spikes, which is what organic search traffic looks like.
- Reddit word of mouth and soft plugs (partly confirmed): on r/manga, 2025-05 replied "Try Mangra. It's a well-built iOS/iPadOS app with support for 5 AI models…", in a tone that sounds like the developer or someone close to them promoting it. On r/mangapiracy, someone is asking for a free translation tool, which is its target audience.
- SEO and AI tool directories (confirmed): navgood, toolpotion, aidive, aitechsuite, mwm.ai and other AI tool directories list it. The competitor Mangit's comparison article (2026-10-25) also names it as a representative Apple-side app.
- Paid ads: no evidence found (the ad libraries only track products on their lists, so not finding anything doesn't mean it isn't running ads).
4. Why it took off
- Real demand that has always been there: readers of raw manga, Korean webtoons and vertical-scroll comics (especially readers of smaller languages beyond English) have long lacked fan translations. LLM translation and bubble erasing/redrawing matured over 2025–2026, turning it into a "one tap" job.
- Ran on iOS for two years first: the feature build-up through v5.x, the 4.2 rating on iOS, the self-reported 60k readers, and the TikTok account with 1 thousand followers meant the Android version didn't start from zero.
- Plugs straight into piracy and self-hosted source ecosystems: supports Mihon/Tachiyomi/Tachimanga/Paperback extensions and connects to Komga, effectively embedding translation into the reading flow heavy manga readers already use. This is the key to retention, and what most similar apps (which only handle screenshots or image uploads) can't do.
- Generous free tier: on-device translation (using the built-in Google/Apple engines) is free, unlimited, requires no sign-up and has no ads, which lowers the barrier to trying it. Users pay for the subscription only to get better translation quality from cloud LLMs, and the cost structure stays healthy (on-device translation costs no server money).
- Localization for smaller languages: translates into 55+ languages (including Kurdish and Swahili), with the UI in 37 languages. In markets like Arabic, Turkish, Polish and Southeast Asia, English-first products don't serve readers well.
5. Differentiation
- Versus single-purpose translation tools (kandurr, IsManga, OpenToon): Mangra is a "complete reader + source + translation studio" (imports CBZ/RAR/PDF, background full-chapter translation, edit mode, exports translated CBZ, built-in browser with translate-as-you-scroll).
- Versus Madomi: the two are the most alike. Mangra adds extension sources, Komga support, and five selectable models; Madomi covers more platforms and started on Android a year earlier.
- Is this why it's taking off?: on iOS, "full features + source integration" is why it retained users and earned its 4.2 rating. On Android it has not really taken off yet: 3,961 installs, and its daily growth over 7 days is less than OpenToon's 1/5; some features (like collections) listed on the official site are also not yet on Android. For now Android growth comes mainly from migrating its existing brand plus organic search traffic, and its differentiation hasn't yet turned into a breakout.
6. How visible it is
- No public revenue (nothing found on TrustMRR or similar platforms; the developer hasn't shared any). The local X corpus has no posts mentioning Mangra in the last 60 days (x-radar). No media coverage; it's only listed in AI tool directories and mentioned in a competitor's (Mangit's) comparison article.
- Verdict: it's being talked about in small circles (manga/piracy communities on Reddit, Arabic-language TikTok).
- Copycat risk: the product format is already common (OpenToon, MangaX AI, EasyComix, ToonFlow, MangaLens all launched within the last 2026 years), but these aren't copying Mangra; the whole category emerged at once.
7. What to borrow
- Polish a vertical tool on iOS first, then port it to Android, bringing the established brand, TikTok account and reviews into the new channel.
- Build AI capability "into the workflow users already have" (Tachiyomi/Mihon extensions, Komga) instead of starting from scratch; this gives high retention.
- Use on-device models for the free tier (zero marginal cost, unlimited) and sell cloud LLMs and batch processing in the paid tier.
- Expand the UI to 37 languages and translation targets to 55 languages, capturing smaller-language markets English-first products don't serve.
8. Uncertain
- The official "60K+ readers, 1M pages per month" is unverified. iOS downloads and revenue are unknown (no grossing chart ranking).
- The category charts for 12 countries show nearly identical ranks, most likely from an aggregated chart, so the real country distribution is unknown.
- Ad spend: none found, but that can't be ruled out.
- Whether the Reddit recommendation was posted by the developer can't be confirmed.
- The iOS version has only one appstore library record, ranking #182 in the Ukraine store's grossing category (2 ratings), so iOS performance across other stores lacks data.
