# Swap the battery icon for a cat: Emoji Battery is the fortieth clone in Android's skin-customization craze, and it ran on paid acquisition, not product

**What it is** An Android app that replaces the battery icon on the status bar with cute emoji or anime icons, changes the status bar and notch styles, and puts a little pet on screen that wanders around.

**Why it took off** iPhones can't customize the status bar. Years of iPhone tutorials on TikTok trained the demand, and the top clones have already reached tens of millions of installs. This one piled on paid acquisition: installs jumped 86k in a day while ratings barely moved, then it rode the low bar of category charts into the top 29 country charts.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build the forty-first clone. Teams with paid acquisition could make a clean version with no ads and a one-time purchase unlock, or drive retention with holiday and trending character themes. The more valuable move is to use the filter "iOS can't do it, TikTok has already trained it" to find the next Android customization category that isn't crowded yet.

C grade: the category has at least 40 same-named Apps, the top ones are at the 10M level, and new ones are still launching in October. Growth comes entirely from paid acquisition and ASO; without spend it sinks. There's a reusable way to find categories to learn from, but copying this one now isn't worth it. Nobody knows about it yet

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations)

A small developer in Tangier, Morocco, launched an app on Google Play in August that combines "emoji battery icon + on-screen pet." In October it went from 60k installs to 510k within a week, now 830k, and it sits on the personalized category charts in 29 countries. But it is at least the fortieth same-named App in this category, and its features nearly match the leader item by item. Below: why it broke out, how big this craze is, where the money comes from, who's competing, and whether you should get in.

### One one-star review, and five days later 86k installs

On 2026 Oct 3, a user named Travis Morton gave it one star on Google Play: "It opens to ads, every action pops up an ad, ads take up about half the screen… After three days it starts asking for money. I was looking forward to something cute, but it isn't worth paying 4 dollars a lot every day or month."

Five days later, on Oct 8, the app gained about 86k installs in one day (third-party estimates from AppstoreSpy, same below). Before that it had only been adding a few hundred to a few thousand a day.

In Oct 18, another user, Neil Stringer, wrote a review marked helpful by 22 people: "I turned off the preferences for 20 minutes, watched ads for 20 minutes, then had to change a pile of settings... and it still didn't work." Ten days later the developer replied: "We understand there are too many ads and will work to reduce them."

The reviews say the product is mediocre, while the install curve keeps jumping step by step. Put those two facts together and you have the whole story of this app.

### What it is

Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar, by developer ImoDevel, listed on 2026-08-10, personalized category on Google Play. You can swap the battery on the status bar for a Shiba Inu, an anime avatar, or a glass heart; change the status bar background and the signal and Wi-Fi icons; put a Shimeji pet that wanders across the screen; change the look of the "notch"; and add a "Battery Troll" that shows a fake battery level to prank your friends.

How it works needs to be made clear: it doesn't actually change the system icons. Instead, it uses the accessibility service to overlay its own drawn status bar on the top of the screen. A Spanish-speaking user put it vividly under a similar app: "It's like taking a photo of yourself and pasting Henry Cavill's face on it." (Google Play review, 10-27, another app in the same category)

Free to download, with ads, in-app purchases $4.99–$19.99 per item (Google Play store page, 11-06).

### Why it broke out: the craze was built by others, the volume was bought by itself

**The category has already been validated.** The leaders of this craze are Emoji Battery Icon Customize by ZAppsolution, launched in March (12.7M installs), and a same-named App by New Widget Co., launched in April (15.6M installs) (Google Play install counts, 11-06). From 6 through October, dozens of nearly identically named Apps flooded in. ImoDevel entered in August, in the later middle of the pack.

**The demand was built by years of iPhone tutorials on TikTok.** iPhone doesn't let third-party apps change the status bar, so "emoji battery" has always been a trick: rename the device, add a lock screen widget. A 2025-02 iPhone tutorial pulled 12.4M views. Android users watched these videos and could search the store and install a version that looks like it really changes the bar. Creators keep feeding the term: @batteryicon posted "Custom Emoji Battery 2026" for 900K views 7-31, and in Nov 5 a user filmed a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and said "this app is called Emoji Battery, so cute" (TikTok, checked 11-06).

**Its own volume was most likely bought** (inference). Looking at the install curve:

| Date | Total installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 09-02 | 8,572 | Three weeks after launch |
| 10-07 | 63,353 | A few hundred to a few thousand a day |
| 10-08 | 149,283 | +86k in one day |
| 10-15 | 511,337 | From 10-11 to 10-15, up about 360k more |
| 10-28 | 718,173 | Back down to a few hundred a day |
| 11-03 | 805,340 | Another +59k in one day |
| 11-06 | 828,147 | +110k in the last 7 days |

Before late October the figures are AppstoreSpy estimates; after that they are Google Play daily installs. Installs sometimes sit at 0 and sometimes jump +59k, while over the same period ratings steadily add 10 to 29 per day. That works out to only 1,000 ratings per 1.3 installs. ZAppsolution, the well-run leader in the category, is at 37.8, and the two Tools for Everyday apps are at 21 and 34 (Google Play, 11-06). An on-off volume pattern combined with a very low rating rate is the most typical look of paid acquisition. However, we found no ads from this developer in the transparency libraries of Meta, Google, or TikTok (Europe). Those libraries don't have full coverage, so this stays an inference. Paid acquisition in the category is confirmed, though: Battery Emoji Buddies, launched a month later, has more than 192 video ads running on TikTok Europe.

**The category's chart bar is low, so volume alone gets you charted.** Since 10-29 it has ranked on the personalized free charts in 23 to 25 countries: 11-02 #3,11-06 in Sweden, #8 in the Netherlands, #20 in Japan, #39 in the US (Google Play category charts). On the personalized charts, reaching the top 10 in the Netherlands probably takes only a few thousand installs a day (inference). So "charted in 29 countries" says more about how quiet this category is than about how popular the app is.

### Who's behind it: a small factory chasing trends

The store page's "About the developer" lists MAX IMMO, based in Tangier, Morocco, with a Gmail support address. ImoDevel's official homepage features a real-estate app called MaxImmo. Under the same developer are also Themes: Wallpaper & Widgets (2.66M installs), Beat Maker - DJ Drum Pad (1.32M), and Web Scanner dual-app QR scanning (570k). All are in the proven Play cosmetics and utilities niches, and the four together have 5.38M installs (Google Play, 11-06).

The playbook is clear: when a niche heats up, ship a feature-stuffed version within a few months, pack the title with search keywords, spend heavily in one push, and earn back the cost through ads. No brand building, and no caring about ratings.

### Where the money comes from

Mainly ads, with in-app purchases as a supplement. It hasn't charted on any country's overall Top Grossing list. It only ranks #94 to #97 on the personalized Top Grossing charts in Hong Kong, Mexico, Nigeria, Argentina, and the Philippines (Google Play, 11-06). The third-party tool Peekly estimates ImoDevel's total store revenue across all its apps at about $5,000 a month (excluding ad revenue). From the reviews, its monetization is aggressive: interstitials on open, a popup on every tap, and a subscription after three days.

This is true across the category. Count the one-star reviews under similar apps and nearly every one is about the same thing: "too many ads, I deleted it without even trying" (Spanish, 10-31), "almost every tap is an ad" (German, 7-12), "more ads than content" (German, 7-14), "lots of ads, but I still like it" (Turkish, 9-16). One review is especially telling: "I installed it because the ad showed the battery turning into a little Snorlax (Pokémon), but there's no Pokémon category at all." (Spanish, 10-26)

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days |

| Customize Emoji Battery Icon | 368 Phuc Minh Investment | 2026-10-21 | 100k | +69k |
| Emoji Battery Friends | Growly | 2026-10-13 | 24k | +21k |

Source: Google Play install counts, 11-06. At least 40 Apps with names containing emoji battery / shimeji / status bar, most launched in the past 2026 years, with developers mostly in Vietnam and China. The feature combination (battery + status bar + pet + notch + stickers) has been standard since July. ImoDevel's extras are only Battery Troll and gesture control. Alongside them are the older Shimeji: Play with Screen Pets (2016 years old, 33.6M installs) and Super Status Bar (2020 years old, 5.18M).

Two things are worth watching. First, the leaders are still growing, 400k a week, so the craze hasn't faded. Second, a new account launched in late October reached 100k installs within two weeks, which means the window for entering through paid acquisition is still open. But Growly, launched in the same period, only reached 24k, and anything without enough spend sinks.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** This is a category already crowded with paid acquisition. What's worth learning is the pattern "Android demand that iOS can't serve and TikTok has already trained." Copying it for a forty-first clone isn't worth it.

**Who it suits:** Teams that already run cosmetics or utility apps on Google Play, have an existing ad-monetization and paid-acquisition workflow, and can calculate cost per install and ad payback. For them this is a routine job, not a new opportunity.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Indie developers who don't buy traffic. This category has no SEO, no community, and no word-of-mouth. Without spend you get Growly's 24k.

**How to do it:**

- Don't build a direct clone. The shared weak spot across the category is ads: users complain about them in every one-star review. A clean version that "opens without ads and unlocks all themes with a one-time purchase," with "no ads" written into the title and first screenshot, is the only visible point of differentiation (inference: whether it can pay back depends on acquisition cost).

- Or go deeper on content: users want specific characters (Pokémon, Crayon Shin-chan, Halloween). If the ads promise them and the app doesn't have them, it's a one-star review. Fast-following holiday and trending character themes are the most practical retention tool in this category. Watch the licensing risk.

- Or change direction: take the filter "iOS can't do it, Android can" and apply it to find the next category, such as lock screens, charging animations, or notification styles that aren't yet crowded.

**How to acquire users:** Store search plus Google App Campaigns, with creative built from vertical "turn the battery into X" before-and-after videos on TikTok. Similar accounts get 500k to 900k views per video, which shows people already watch this kind of creative.

**When to get in:** The leader is still adding 400k a week, but same-named Apps keep launching every week. The holiday season is the last clear seasonal peak this year. If you can't launch by mid-December, don't bother.

**What would show you misread it:** If the top two drop below 100k weekly new installs, the craze is fading. Or if Google Play starts restricting how accessibility services can be used (this category relies on them entirely to overlay the status bar), the whole category could be wiped out together.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (inferred Google App Campaigns / ad networks)** : installs jump in steps (10-08 +86k, 10-11~15 about +450k, 11-03 +59k) then fall back, rating growth stays flat, only 1.3 ratings per thousand installs; the app has ads + IAP. Meta/Google/TikTok ad libraries show nothing (they only cover listed advertisers)

- Inferred **Category search / ASO** : the title contains both emoji battery and status bar, package name com.battery.emoji; over ten apps in the category sit in the top 50 of personalized charts across 25+ stores, with search terms warmed up by rivals' ads and TikTok videos

- **Verified** **Category chart exposure** : from 10-29, charted on 23–25 stores' personalized free charts; 11-02 peaked at #3 in SE, US rose from 111 to 35 (googleplay library)

- Inferred **TikTok content** : lots of emoji battery videos, but from rival accounts and iPhone tutorials; no sign of this app being mentioned

## Why Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar (com.battery.emoji, ImoDevel) got traction

> In one line: it didn't open a new category. It's a **late follower** in the Google Play wave of "emoji battery / status bar customization + Shimeji screen pets" that has run for 2026 years. It launched in 2026-08-10. Organic growth was very slow for the first two months (about 8.6k installs by early September). Then from Oct 8 to 15 days, it suddenly jumped from 63k to 510k within a week, a classic "surge in bursts" pattern, with installs and ratings badly out of sync (1.3 ratings per thousand installs, vs. 20–38 for top rivals). The most likely explanation is **concentrated paid acquisition plus store search traffic riding category heat** . The product itself is nearly identical to dozens of rivals, so differentiation is not why it grew.

### 1. Basic data

|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-08-10 (store launch date, possibly reset) | googleplay library `app` |
| Total installs | 828,147 (2026-11-06), store tier 500K+ | googleplay library `app_profile` |
| New in the last 7 days | 109,974 | Same as above |
| Rating | 4.21 stars, 1,045 ratings, 23 written reviews | Same as above |
| Monetization | Contains ads + IAP at $4.99–$19.99 per item; **not charted on any store's overall Top Grossing** ; personalized category Top Grossing only ranks #94–#97 in hk/mx/ng/ar/ph | Google Play library, rank 11-06 |
| Charts | Personalized free category charts across 25 stores: NL #8, SE #11, JP #20, AU #22, DE #23, CA #28, US #39 (11-06); best ever was #11-02 in SE... 3 | Google Play library `chart_rank` |

#### Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates, Google Play library `app_day_ext`; from 10-29 onward, our own data)

| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09-02 | 8,572 | Live for 3 weeks |
| 09-25 | 43,345 | A few hundred to a few thousand a day |
| 10-07 | 63,353 | |
| **10-08** | **149,283** | Single day +85,930 |
| 10-10 | 162,113 | Back to a few hundred per day |
| **10-13 → 10-15** | 362,067 → 511,337 | About +216k over three days (10-11 to 10-13, ~200k total) |
| 10-21 → 10-25 | 628k → 705k | 1–45k per day |
| 10-28 | 718,173 | Dropped to a few hundred per day |
| 10-31 / 11-03 | 746,696 / 805,340 | Our own collection shows another jump of 28k and 59k |
| 11-06 | 828,147 | About 10k per day in recent days |

**Rating growth and installs are completely out of sync** : from 10-29 to 11-06, ratings grew steadily by +10~29 per day, while installs swung between 0 and +59k. About 1.26 ratings per thousand installs; top category rival ZAppsolution's Emoji Battery Icon Customize has 37.8, and two Tools for Everyday apps have 20.9 and 33.9 (googleplay library, 11-06). This "on-off" surge plus low rating rate is typical of paid acquisition traffic (especially Google App Campaigns / ad networks), not organic word of mouth or influencer promotion. **No direct ad evidence was found** (see section 4), so the paid acquisition point is an inference.

### 2. Competition: a crowded category

On Google Play, there are over 40 apps with emoji battery / shimeji / status bar in the name. Most launched within the last 2026 years, with developers mainly from Vietnam and China. This app sits in the lower-middle of the pack.

| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days | Ratings per thousand installs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize | New Widget Co. | 2026-04-22 | 15.6M | 376k | 5.1 |
| Emoji Battery Icon Customize | ZAppsolution | 2026-03-25 | 12.7M | 404k | 37.8 |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar | HoangSi | 2026-06-09 | 3.9M | 23k | 0.6 |
| Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets | ZAppsolution | 2026-07-17 | 3.56M | 266k | 10.2 |

| Emoji Battery Widget & Icons | Tools for Everyday - AI Tasks | 2026-06-23 | 2.89M | 82k | 33.9 |
| Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets | SHINK COMPANY | 2026-08-22 | 2.04M | 99k | 22.9 |
| Themix: Emoji Battery Widget | ScreenSpark | 2025-11-27 | 1.59M | 56k | 17.9 |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar Icon | TRUNGHIEUCOM | 2026-08-14 | 1.42M | 143k | 1.5 |
| **Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar** | **ImoDevel** | **2026-08-10** | **830k** | **110k** | **1.3** |
| Battery Emoji Buddies | STARVIA (Lutech family) | 2026-09-10 | 780k | 188k | 5.1 |
| Emoji Battery: Status Bar DIY | Lutech Studio | 2026-09-11 | 340k | 27k | 17.7 |
| Customize Emoji Battery Icon | 368 Phuc Minh Investment | 2026-10-21 | 100k | 69k | 19.8 |
| Emoji Battery Friends | Growly | 2026-10-13 | 24k | 21k | 9.1 |
| Battery Emoji Buddies & Themes | OMG! Bros | 2026-10-29 | 776 | — | — |

Source: Google Play library `app_profile` (2026-11-06). Established adjacent titles: Shimeji: Play with Screen Pets (Digital Cosmos, 202B), Super Status Bar (Tom Bayley, 20.2B), and battery charging animation apps (20M-scale).

- **iOS** : Apple doesn't allow third-party apps to change the status bar, so "emoji battery" on iPhone is a trick that has circulated on TikTok for years (renaming the device, lock screen widgets). That makes this a category that can **only be built on Android** ; iOS only gets the widget version. (TikTok search shows a large number of iPhone tutorial videos over 2023–2025 years, e.g., one iphonnation video with 2025-02-17 12.4M views)

- **Big-brand features** : Samsung Good Lock / One UI and MIUI themes offer some status bar customization, but none include emoji batteries or screen pets.

- **Category timeline** : after ZAppsolution (March) and New Widget Co. (April) each reached over ten million installs, dozens of same-named apps flooded in from 6 to October, and new listings were still appearing in late October (Customize Emoji Battery Icon 10-21, Emoji Battery Friends 10-13, OMG! Bros 10-29).

### 3. Differentiation: basically none

Features listed on the store page (Play store page, read via Jina): emoji battery icons, status bar customization (background, icons, height), animated stickers, Shimeji screen pets, notch styles, "Battery Troll" (fake battery percentage), gesture controls; implemented with an Accessibility Service overlay.

This nearly matches item by item ZAppsolution's "Emoji Battery & Shimeji Pets", Tools for Everyday's "Emoji Battery Widget & Icons" (store description identical: "battery designs, status bar decorations, anime screen pets, notch overlays"), and SHINK's "Emoji Battery: Icons & Pets". The combo of Shimeji pets + notch + stickers became standard in the category after July. The few small differences worth noting:

- The package name `com.battery.emoji` is short and keyword-focused, and the store name "Emoji Battery: DIY Status Bar" packs both main search terms (emoji battery, status bar) into the title, standard ASO practice;

- "Battery Troll" and "gesture controls" are rare extra features, but there is no evidence users came for them.

Conclusion: **differentiation is not why it grew** ; it grew on category heat plus ad spend, not because it did anything different. A rating count of 4.21 and an extremely low rating rate also suggest retention and satisfaction may not be good.

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns / ad networks) | Installs jump in steps (10-08 single day +86k, 10-11~15 about +450k, 11-03 +59k), then fall back to a few hundred per day after each jump; rating growth stays flat, with only 1.3 ratings per thousand installs (top rivals 20–38). The app has ads + IAP, consistent with the model of ad monetization recouping paid acquisition. | No (inferred). The Meta ad library, the Google ad transparency library (for listed advertisers), and the TikTok European ad library all **show nothing** for ImoDevel or this package name; but these libraries only track listed advertisers/keywords, so finding nothing doesn't mean no spend. |
| Store search driven by category heat | Title contains "Emoji Battery" and "Status Bar"; over ten apps in the category sit in the top 50 of personalized charts across 25+ stores, and the search terms themselves are being warmed up by heavy rival ad spend and TikTok videos | Partly confirmed (category heat confirmed; this app's share of search not verified) |
| Positive loop from category chart exposure | From 10-29, on personalized free charts across 23–25 stores: 11-02 peaked at #3 in SE, #7 in TR, #8 in NL/DE, and US climbed from 111 to 35 | Confirmed (googleplay library) |
| TikTok content / creators | There are many "emoji battery" videos, but they're from rival accounts (gpsarea68, batteryicon, emoji_battery_widget, with individual videos ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of views) or iPhone tutorials; no videos mentioning this ImoDevel app were found. The rival Lutech family (Battery Emoji Buddies) ran a lot of video ads in European TikTok (192+ ads running, sponsor Ecomdy Media) | Not confirmed for this app; confirmed at the category level |
| X / Reddit / press | x-radar shows 0 posts about "emoji battery" in the last 30 days; Exa searches only returned store pages and download sites | None |

**Where the money comes back from** : store page marks "contains ads", IAP at $4.99–$19.99; not on the overall Top Grossing chart, only ranking #94–#97 in the category Top Grossing of a few small storefronts; Peekly estimates ImoDevel's apps combined earn about $5k/month from store revenue (peekly.app, third-party estimate, excludes ad revenue). So it mainly monetizes through ads (interstitial/rewarded videos that unlock themes), with IAP as a supplement.

### 5. Developer profile: an app factory riding trends

Under ImoDevel: Themes: Wallpaper & Widgets (2026-22.7M), Web Scanner - Webscan Dual App (2026-2.57M), Beat Maker - DJ Drum Pad (2026-41.3M), this app (2026-8.83M); AppBrain logs 6 apps, chrome-stats logs 7 (including Zipper Lock, Phone Ringtone & HD Wallpapers). The categories are all proven "customization / utility" hot spots on Play. The contact emails are two different gmail addresses (aybader9@, inventafrica5@), and there are two developer sites (imodevel.com, rhynhawlk.dev). The official homepage carries a different real-estate app. This is a classic publishing play: see a trend heat up, ship something fast, then push it up the charts with paid acquisition and ASO. It is not brand building.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **almost nobody knows about it** . No founder is posting revenue, no media or X discussion, only automated aggregator pages like Peekly and AppBrain. But **the category itself is already very crowded** . It is a copycat in its own right, and October still shows new same-name apps being listed.

- Copycats: apps listed after it include Battery Emoji Buddies (STARVIA, 09-10), Emoji Battery: Status Bar DIY (Lutech, 09-11), Customize Emoji Battery Icon (368 Phuc Minh, 10-21), Emoji Battery Friends (Growly, 10-13), Battery Emoji Buddies & Themes (OMG! Bros, 10-29), and others. They are copying the category, not copying this app.

### 7. Takeaways

1. **A customization category only Android can do** (iOS doesn't open the status bar). Demand was already trained by years of iPhone "emoji battery" tutorials on TikTok, and Android users can get the "real" version directly, so the conversion barrier is low.

2. **Follow the leader within 3–5 months of validation, bundle the features (battery + status bar + pets + notch + stickers), stack two main keywords in the title, and run paid acquisition across multiple countries** . Getting into the top 50 of the personalization category charts in 25 stores (a low bar) gets you steady category-chart and search traffic.

3. The entry bar for the personalization category free chart is low (NL top 10 is roughly several thousand installs a day). Concentrated spend can produce the look of being "charted in 29 countries", so discount this when scoring recall.

### 8. Still unclear

- Paid acquisition channels and spend: none of the three ad libraries turned it up. October's stepped jumps could also be positive feedback from Google Store recommendations/featuring or category charts. Not verified.

- Ad monetization ROI and retention: the extremely low rating rate could mean no rating prompt, or poor traffic quality. The two can't be told apart.

- Whether the listing date 08-10 was reset (no earlier reviews in the database).

- iOS side: the iTunes search endpoint returned nothing this time, so the scale of comparable iOS widget apps is unverified.
