# GTA 6 has no Turkish, so a phone app dubs it: how Game Caption sold subscriptions

**What it is** A subscription app: point your phone camera at a TV, or use PS5 Remote Play, to translate the English subtitles in the game into Turkish in real time, shown on screen or read aloud.

**Why it took off** Turkish console players had long been stuck with games that had no Turkish. GTA 6 launched without Turkish, which pushed the topic nationwide. It was an early phone-only solution, then forum threads and gaming creator partnerships brought people in.

**B** **How you could follow it** Skip Turkey. Pick another market where big games often ship without local language and console players will pay. Use its framework, and focus on the things it got criticized for: latency, bad translation, and hidden charges. Find local gaming creators and forums to promote it before a major release.

Grade B: the demand is real, and the approach and acquisition path are clear, with room in other language markets. But the technical bar is low, free competitors and Google Translate squeeze pricing, and the buzz is tied to one big game. The original market was crowded within a month and a half. Word is spreading in small circles

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-23 · 11-07 installs 14,556

Batuhan Kumsal, a Turkish indie developer, built an app: point your phone camera at the TV, or get the picture via PS5 Remote Play, and it translates the English subtitles in real time into Turkish, shown on the phone or read aloud. It rode the nationwide debate over GTA 6 launching without Turkish, and reached the top few dozen of Turkey's utility top-grossing chart. The demand is real, but the method is low-barrier: within a month and a half, five or six copycats appeared, and one is completely free. The thing worth thinking about is other markets where "big games don't ship in the local language."

### A person holding a phone up to a TV

In 2026 October 30, a Turkish user gave Game Caption 5 stars on the App Store: "I rarely write reviews, but I really like this one. Before, the first thing I did before playing a game was check whether it had Turkish subtitles. Now I can play whatever I want."

Three days later, another user wrote: "I don't understand the people leaving bad reviews. I point my phone camera at the TV, the translation sits in the top half, and it translates well. It's perfect for GTA 6. Please don't break it."

These two reviews describe the same thing. Many 3A games have no Turkish. PC players can install community translation patches (called "Türkçe yama" in Turkish), but console players have no option and have to struggle through English. Game Caption's solution is crude but works: prop the phone in front of the TV, frame the subtitle strip, and let AI handle the rest.

### What it actually does

The first line of the store page says "Keep up with the story in Turkish." There are two ways to use it:

- **Camera mode** : point the phone at the TV or monitor, draw a green box around the subtitle area, and translate only that part;

- **PS5 mode** : connect the phone and PS5 to the same LAN and pull the picture through Remote Play, so you don't need to point the camera at the screen.

The translation appears on the phone without changing the TV picture. It can read aloud, and the premium tier detects the speaking character's gender to switch between a male and female voice. Some popular games have pre-made "professional dubbing" (Profesyonel Dublaj) and preset subtitle positions. Later it added Android TV / Google TV support and Samsung TV casting, so subtitles can be overlaid on the TV picture. Translation runs on a cloud large model (the official site says Gemini), so pricing is per minute.

The iOS version launched first. The Play listing shows 8-23 in 2026-06-09, with 9-16 official release. It is listed only in Turkey, with interface languages of Turkish, English, and Arabic.

### Why now

**GTA 6 was set to release on 2026-11-19 in 11 languages, with no Turkish** (BBC Türkçe, 10-31). In Aug 27 Rockstar released an extended trailer, and volunteers produced a Turkish-dubbed version the same day, which spread on social media. The hashtag "#wewantgta6inturkish" took off, and people demanded Turkish on Reddit r/oyun, the Technopat forum, and the complaint site Şikayetvar. A TikTok video by koraykayann with Turkish dubbing of GTA 6 appeared 8-29 and got 390k views.

Game Caption's launch fell right in the middle of this wave. Later creator videos were titled "GTA 6 and RDR2 can be played with Turkish dubbing" (oynababacom on TikTok, 10-22.1M views). App Store reviews show how much weight this carried: 11-01 someone wrote "Lots of people bought a cheap Xbox Series S for GTA 6. Before GTA 6 comes out, Xbox support is a must."

### How big the numbers are

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Google Play installs | 10,728 (10-29) → 14,556 (11-06), up 36% in a week |
| Play chart position | Turkish utility top-grossing rank went from 10-29 to 11-04, at 36–45, then dropped to 53 and 65 |
| App Store rating count (Turkey) | 91 (10-28) → 116 (11-06), average 3.8 |
| App Store chart position | Best Turkish Utilities top-grossing rank was 17 (11-02), recently around 40 |
| Pricing | In-app purchases $1.79–$23.99; Premium AI and Profesyonel tiers, monthly and annual; one user said the monthly plan is about 129 lira |

Based on iOS rating count, iOS downloads are probably in the tens of thousands (estimate). Reaching the top few dozen of the Turkish utility top-grossing chart is not a high bar, which suggests steady subscription revenue, but the pool is small and revenue is not public.

### Where users come from

**Paid gaming creator partnerships.** A video by Egemen Işık (@gameof4o) on Instagram carried the tags "@gamecaptionapp ile #işbirliği #reklam" (collaboration, ad). It ran a giveaway of 3 one-year Pro memberships, with entry conditional on following the official account, drawn in Aug 5. Two videos from oynababacom on TikTok: the 9-16 one got 273k views and 5,691 likes, the same day Android launched; the 10-22 one is the GTA 6 video described above.

**Gaming forums.** On the PlayStation board of DonanımHaber, Turkey's largest hardware gaming forum, a thread on 9-16 was titled "Türkçe Olmayan Oyun Kalmayacak!" ("There will be no more games without Turkish!"). The poster is a long-time member with over 20,000 posts, and included a demo video they filmed. By November the thread had 11k clicks and 253 replies, and ranked 3 on the hot list that day. One reply asked "When will it support Samsung TVs? I'll pay whatever, as long as it works well," and another said "I bought the monthly plan first and will switch to annual when it expires."

**Each new platform brings another round.** iOS went first to validate demand, Android followed, and TV support came later on user request. Each launch came with a round of forum threads and creator videos. The review section is now asking for Xbox, PS4, LG TVs, and Samsung Tizen TVs, showing demand is still spreading outward.

I couldn't find any store ads or Meta ads. The name includes the search term "Oyun Çevirisi" (game translation), and searching that term in the Turkish store finds it.

### Where the money comes from, and what the bad reviews say

The monetization is straightforward: one free trial, then charges by the minute of translation running. Cloud translation costs money per use, and the design protects its own costs.

The reviews are sharply polarized, averaging 3.8. Positive reviews say "you pay a little after the trial, but it's worth it, two bread's worth of money for a month." The negative reviews cluster around three issues:

- **Charges disclosed too late** : "I wish I'd known it was paid. I set up a bunch of accounts and did all the configuration, and only at the last step did it ask for money."

- **Latency and bad translation** : "It goes wrong where the dialogue is fast, the subtitles always lag behind, and the voice translation is too slow to use." "It read the same line two or three times, and even read out the character names."

- **Crashes after updates, wrong charges** : "I bought the monthly Pro plan, but was charged the annual fee, and I want a refund."

This is where things most often go wrong once you have a product that charges money, and it is also where a later entrant can do better.

### Who it's competing with

It wasn't the first "game screen OCR translation" tool. On PC, the open-source MORT already existed, and earlier this year SimulTranslate, which connects to a computer, appeared (one TikTok video with 115k views, 1-05). Game Caption's position: the one for Turkish console players who use only a phone and can actually get paid.

9–October, this lane got crowded:

| Name | Platform | Launched | Difference from Game Caption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side Screen: Oyun Çevirisi | iOS | About October | Completely free (watch rewarded ads for more time), processes everything on the phone, casts to Android TV and LG TVs, works with Xbox. The DonanımHaber thread title is literally "FREE! Every PS5 game now playable in Turkish" |
| Subvoce | PC, Android TV | About October | Subscription, supports PS and Xbox Remote Play; one TikTok at 124k views |
| TranslaCat | iOS | 9-14 | Nearly identical features, not gaining traction yet |
| Tercümen | Android | 10-17 | The creator's own GTA 6 dubbing video got 190k views, but the app has only 73 installs |
| CeBo Translator, console.translator, Subtify | Multiple platforms | 9–October | Same category, each a few thousand views |
| Google Translate live / camera translation | Big-company features | Already around | Free and general-purpose, but can't frame the subtitle area, no voiceover, can't connect to PS5 directly; a creator already told people "don't pay, just use Google Translate" (10-1.82M views) |

Game Caption slid from #36 to #65 on Play's Top Grossing chart, and the timing lines up with free products like Side Screen showing up (inferred).

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** The Turkish lane is already crowded, skip it. What's worth building is the same thing for another market where big games don't ship in the local language and consoles can't take patches, and doing it smoother than this one.

**Good fit for:** One or two people who can build mobile, chain OCR, LLM translation and TTS, and keep latency down. Ideally you're a player of that language yourself and know the local gaming creators and forums.

**Not a fit for:** Anyone aiming at English or other major languages. English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Korean big games all get localized. Also not for anyone hoping to cash in on a single spike: GTA 6's hype peaks around launch, and what decides whether people stay is translation quality.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick the language first. Criteria: big games often skip it, lots of console players, and people willing to pay for a subscription. Check the official language lists of target big titles (GTA 6, the next Call of Duty, upcoming major IPs). Note any language they leave out, then search local forums and TikTok for "[game] + local language + subtitles/voiceover" to see if people are asking for it.

2. Build the product on its skeleton: camera frames the subtitle area + PS5 Remote Play, translation shown on the phone or read aloud. Then go straight after its complaints: state the price before the trial, cut latency (process locally wherever possible), don't make people say the name out loud, and support Xbox and mainstream TVs from day one.

3. Copy its payment model but avoid its traps: per-minute trial is fine, but don't reveal the price only at the last step, and avoid subscription tiers that are easy to get charged for by mistake.

**How to get users:** Follow its playbook, which is cheap and proven: partner with two or three mid-sized local gaming creators on paid videos with a giveaway of annual plans; post a demo-video thread on the biggest local gaming forum; repeat the push with each new platform (Android, TV, Xbox). Video titles should say outright "[big game] now playable in [language]".

**When to move:** Ideally within a few weeks of GTA 6's launch (11-19). It's the game most people this year will get stuck on because they can't read it. If you miss that window, watch the next major release that skips your language and list a month ahead.

**Signs you've misread it:** In your chosen market, creator videos get huge views but downloads don't convert to paying users; or people try it and say "Google Translate is enough"; or a free competitor like Side Screen floods in fast and your translation quality doesn't pull ahead. Another one: the publisher adds the language and demand vanishes overnight.

## Why Game Caption (com.batuhankumsal.gamecaption) took off

> In one line: a Turkish indie developer, Batuhan Kumsal, built a phone app that points the camera at a TV, or pulls the game feed via PS5 Remote Play, recognizes English subtitles, translates them into Turkish, and shows or reads them aloud. The Pro tier adds Turkish voiceover. It launched on iOS first (2026-06-09), then Android (Play listing shows 2026-08-23, forum launch post is 2026-09-16). Sold only in Turkey.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Play installs | 10,728 (10-29) → 14,556 (11-06), 7 days +3,828 (+36%) | googleplay library app_day |
| Play chart position | Turkey TOOLS Top Grossing #36–45 (10-29 to 11-04), then fell to #53 and #65; 10-31 and 11-01 Top Free #184–189 | googleplay library chart_rank |
| iOS rating count (Turkey) | 91 (10-28) → 116 (11-06), 9 days +25; average rating 3.8 | App Store database app_day; iTunes lookup |
| iOS chart position | Best Turkey Utilities Top Grossing rank #17 (11-02), recently hovering around #40; the store page shows #58 on Utilities Top Free | App Store library; apps.apple.com/tr page |
| In-app purchases | $1.79–$23.99 per item; Premium AI and Profesyonel tiers, both monthly and annual; one-time free trial deducted by minutes of translation running | Data card; gamecaptionapp.com |
| Storefront | Turkey only (n_countries_now=1); interface in Turkish, English and Arabic | Data card; App Store page |

In Turkey, reaching the dozens on the utilities grossing chart isn't a high bar, which suggests steady subscription revenue but at small scale. Judging by the iOS rating count, iOS downloads are probably in the tens of thousands (unverified).

### 2. Why it took off

**Root cause: Turkish players need to understand English games, a long-running real need. GTA 6 skipping Turkish turned that need into a national conversation.**

- Many 3A games don't ship in Turkish, so local players have long relied on community translation patches ("Türkçe yama"). Patches can't be installed on consoles, leaving PS5 players with no options.

- GTA 6 is set to launch on 2026-11-19, with 11 languages at launch and no Turkish (BBC Türkçe, 2026-10-31). On Aug 27 Rockstar released an extended trailer, and volunteers produced a Turkish dub the same day that went viral on social media. Hashtags like #wewantgta6inturkish and demands on Reddit r/oyun, Technopat and Şikayetvar pushed for Turkish (koraykayann's dubbing video 390k views, 2026-08-29).

- This app landed right on that timeline: its launch (iOS June, Android September) fell into the 8–September wave of discussion, and creator videos then pitched it directly with "GTA 6 and RDR2 now playable with Turkish dubbing" (oynababacom, 2026-10-22.1M views). With two weeks left before GTA 6's launch, demand may spike again.

**Why people pay:** Translation is billed per minute (cloud Gemini), the free trial is one-time and runs out by minutes, and after that a subscription is required. Annual subscribers in forums say "bought monthly first, then switched to annual when it expired" (replies on the DonanımHaber thread). The alternative for console players is struggling through English on their own, so willingness to pay is relatively high.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Confirmed paid partnerships with Turkish gaming creators:**
    - On Instagram, Egemen Işık (@gameof4o) posted a video tagged "@gamecaptionapp ile #işbirliği #reklam" and ran a giveaway of 3 one-year Profesyonel memberships, requiring a follow of @gamecaptionapp, with the draw on Aug 5.
    - On TikTok, oynababacom posted two videos: 2026-09-16 got 273K views and 5,691 likes, right on the day the Android app launched; 10-22 got 109K views, about GTA 6 and RDR2.
    - tarhanmedya 2026-08-28 video with 18k views, caption "send this video to a friend". It looks like the same kind of promo, but no product name is given. Unverified.

2. **Game forum post (confirmed):** A post titled "Türkçe Olmayan Oyun Kalmayacak! Game Caption – Now on Android and Samsung TV casting" in the PlayStation section of DonanımHaber, posted 2026-09-16, with 11,024 clicks and 253 replies, ranking #3 on the hot list that day. Some replies say they already bought the monthly plan and are switching to annual.

3. **Owned content:** website gamecaptionapp.com, official YouTube channel (tutorials and Shorts), Instagram @gamecaptionapp.

4. **Cross-platform rhythm:** iOS first to validate demand, Android next, then an Android TV / Google TV build (Game Caption TV) that overlays subtitles directly on the TV picture, added at user request. Each new platform came with another round of forum posts and creator outreach.

5. **Store search:** In the Turkish store, the name includes the category term "Oyun Çevirisi" (game translation). No rating data on the Play side. Whether they ran ASA or Google ads is unverified (the ad library doesn't track it).

6. Not found on X (x-radar library) or in English-language media.

### 4. Competitors

| Name | Platform | Launched | Scale | Difference from Game Caption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MORT | Open source, PC | Years ago | Open source on GitHub, with someone making a Turkish tutorial on it (2026-05, vezron06,3.5k views) | PC only; you have to set up OCR and translation yourself; doesn't work on consoles |
| SimulTranslate | PC plus phone (cloud) | Around 2026-01 | TikTok oyunkatledici video with 115k views (2026-01-05) | Needs a PC connection; GC doesn't |
| Side Screen: Oyun Çevirisi(guleryuz.dev) | iOS | About 2026-10 | Multiple Douyin-style videos with 30k views up and down; DonanımHaber post with 1,061 clicks | Completely free (time is earned by watching rewarded ads), all processing on-device (Neural Engine), can cast subtitles to Android TV or LG TVs, supports Xbox, dual-box recognition. Goes straight at GC on the "free" point. |
| TranslaCat(OZAN KIVANC) | iOS | 2026-09-14 | appstore library shows 3 ratings in Saudi Arabia, very small | Also uses the camera plus Remote Play, free on the phone |
| Subvoce | PC, Android TV | About 2026-10 | TikTok video with 124k views (10-16) | Runs on PC or Android TV, subscription model, supports PS and Xbox Remote Play |
| Tercümen(Nurullah Sevmez) | Android | 2026-10-17 | 73 Play installs; the author's GTA 6 voice-over video has 190k views | The author has their own audience, but the app hasn't picked up much traction yet |
| CeBo Translator, console.translator, Subtify | Multiple platforms | 2026-09–10 | Each a few thousand views | Copycat in the same category |
| Google Translate "real-time translation, camera translation" | Big-company features | Already around | Very large | Free, but not designed for game subtitles: can't select a subtitle region, no game voice-over, no direct PS5 connection. A creator has already been teaching "don't spend money, just use Google Translate" (social.safak, 10-1.82M views). |
| Switch Genie – Game Translator | iOS (US store) | 2025-03 | 4 ratings | Aimed at Switch, English market |

**Takeaway:** It wasn't the first to do "OCR translation of game screens." MORT and SimulTranslate were already on PC. It was one of the earlier ones built for Turkish console players on mobile, and it proved paid conversion. 9–October this lane is clearly crowded: Side Screen, TranslaCat, Subvoce, Tercümen and CeBo are all chasing the same GTA 6 topic.

### 5. Differentiation

- **Console scene, zero hardware:** Point the phone camera at the TV, or pull the picture through PS5 Remote Play. No PC, no capture card.

- **Subtitle-region selection plus a finished Turkish experience:** A green box translates only the subtitle area; it can read lines aloud and pick a male or female voice after detecting the speaker's gender. Some games have pre-made Turkish voice packs (Profesyonel Dublaj).

- **Early to Turkish mobile:** Moved first, with forum word-of-mouth and creator promotion at the same time.

These differentiators are part of why it took off, but the real push was timing (GTA 6 not coming in Turkish) plus creator distribution. Features are easy to copy, and since October a free Side Screen has been attacking it head-on. The Play Top Grossing chart dropping from #36 to #65 may reflect competition and free substitutes (unverified).

### 6. Visibility

**Buzz in niche circles.** Discussed only inside Turkish gaming communities (DonanımHaber, TikTok, Instagram). No public revenue, no coverage from English media or big X accounts. But locally it's been copied heavily, with more than 5 similar apps appearing in a little over a month.

### 7. What others can borrow

- **"Big games missing your language" is the demand:** Players in a large market find that a 3A game doesn't cover their language (Turkish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Indonesian, etc.), and consoles can't be patched. You can copy this approach: get the picture from the camera or Remote Play, run OCR plus an LLM translation, add TTS, and sell per-minute subscriptions.

- **Ride the hype around a big game launch** for creator promotion (here, GTA 6).

- **Validate on iOS, then Android, then TV** , with a round of forum posts and creator outreach for each new platform.

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual revenue, subscription conversion, and retention are unknown; no ratings on Play.

- Whether they ran store ads or Meta ads.

- Whether the GTA 6 launch (11-19) brings another wave, or the free copycat apps take the share; if Rockstar later adds Turkish, the demand weakens.

- Whether it can be copied to other languages: the site says the Profesyonel tier supports "languages other than Turkish" and the interface includes Arabic, but it's only listed in Turkey so far.
