"Read scripture first, then scroll": BibleScroll hit 30k installs in one week by occupying a gap nobody filled on Android
What it is A screen-time app that locks your social apps and only unlocks them after you read that day's Bible passage, from the BePresent team.
Why it took off The founder ran Facebook and Instagram ads with testimonial-style videos from his personal profile ("I scroll, the Bible sits there"), and placed them on Android, where there are almost no competitors; the onboarding asks for five-star ratings first, so ratings and rankings rose together.
BHow you could follow Don't build another one for the English iOS market; go after Android and non-English Christian markets like Brazil / LatAm / Korea. Blocking really works, so charge for the trial and don't call it a "donation"; use the same real-person testimony videos on Meta.

BibleScroll locks your social apps until you've read today's Bible passage. It's not a new hit: two brothers who already run a screen-time app making $20K a month reskinned it with faith, started Facebook ads for the Android version in Oct 20, and pushed Google Play installs from 1,800 to 34K in a week. Here's how it got going, where the money comes from, why iOS is already crowded, and why Android and other languages still have room.
An ironic review
On the morning of October 30, someone left BibleScroll a 5-star review on Google Play:
"Just started using it! I saw the ad while scrolling Instagram 😭 So ironic. Every night I spend 30 to 40 minutes praying, reading the Bible and writing devotional journal entries, and I asked God to be with me not only at night. This morning, this ad showed up."
Within a few hours that same day, others wrote "Saw your ad on FB, that's a clever move, it really forces you to finish the Bible before you can scroll social media," and "Installed and set up, only to find there's no free version, locked behind a paywall." Three reviews sum up the app: the traffic is bought, the hook is believers' guilt about scrolling, and the money is due the moment you walk in.
What it is
How it works in one sentence: pick the apps to lock (social, games, dating), set a reading time (1, 5, 10 or 25 minutes), read that day's passage, and those apps unlock for the day. Standard extras include streaks, daily verses, lock-screen widgets, saved verses, and the Bible in five English translations plus Spanish and Portuguese editions. The Play listing says it "integrates with the YouVersion Bible app," while the iOS version reads inside the app itself (the two descriptions differ; I haven't confirmed whether there's an official YouVersion partnership).
The developer is Screen Detox Inc, the company behind BePresent. BePresent is a screen-time control app built over 2022 years by brothers Jack and Charles Winston. It has 71.5k ratings on the US App Store, and its Android version launched in April this year and has reached 266k installs. The teardown at byplutus.com 10-29 puts its monthly revenue at about $20k, and the brothers run 6 TikTok and 2 Instagram accounts with 58M total views. BibleScroll uses the same blocking tech, the same paywall, and the same ad-profile approach; only the audience has changed.
The iOS version launched in February 2026 (App Store name "BibleScroll: Christian Focus," 9,034 US ratings, 4.8 stars, 11-06) and ran lukewarm for about half a year. The Android version went live in September 12, and that's where the growth came from.

About 32k new installs over 7 days, 11-06 and charting in 29 countries at once. In the US Books & Reference free chart it climbed from #10-29 to #17 (from 43), and in the top-grossing chart in the same category it went 42 → 21. Its category free charts in Singapore, the Philippines, South Africa and Canada sit at #5–7, and it peaked at #120 on the Philippines overall Top Grossing chart at 11-05. The iOS side got a small lift too: US ratings +661 over 7 days, and it reached #1 on the Reference top-grossing charts in Nigeria and Tanzania (charting in these countries is easy, so treat it as a direction only).
One number needs caution: 34k installs corresponds to 11.6k ratings, roughly one in three people rated it, while normal apps sit at 1–3%. 5 stars account for 92% of ratings, and many reviews say "haven't used it yet, but just knowing… I want to give it infinite stars." One 1-star review puts it bluntly: "Before I even tried this app, I was asked to rate it, grant it permission to access my other apps, and choose my annual 'donation' amount." The rating prompt during onboarding is essentially confirmed; rating counts should not be read as download counts.
Where the traffic came from: the founder's real-name profile running Meta ads
The main driver of the surge is Facebook / Instagram ads. In the Meta Ad Library, co-founder "Charles Winston"'s personal page 11-06 has 314 ads running, about 90% of them video, with landing pages for BePresent's Android version and BibleScroll. The iOS BibleScroll ads started in Aug 28; the Play version ads started in Oct 20, and 10-26 and 10-28 added new creatives, and Play installs started climbing at 10-31, so the timing lines up.
The ad copy is uniformly first-person testimony:
"I always felt guilty, scrolling my phone while my Bible just sat there 😔… Now I've been doing it for 234 days in a row."
Running ads from the founder's real-name profile makes it look like a Christian sharing their story rather than a hard-sell brand ad. Several reviews thank "the brothers" and "those brothers who built it," showing the two brothers appear on camera in the ads.
Other channels were small: the official TikTok account @biblescrollapp has 1,212 followers, its top video, "The devil wants you to scroll," got 104k views (May); from late October, several small accounts were posting "biblescroll made me read the Bible instead of TikTok" almost daily, with a few hundred views each. TikTok ads ran in Europe in August and are now paused. There's also a likely tailwind (inferred): a different app called "Scroll The Bible" has creator videos regularly hitting millions of views, urging people to "search scroll the bible in the store," and BibleScroll's nearly identical name very likely picked up some of that search traffic.
The ads were targeted at the US, but nearly all reviews come from the Philippines. Meta likely pushed the traffic toward cheap, devout, English-speaking audiences automatically (inference; I can't see whether this was manual targeting or automatic expansion).
Where the money comes from: an annual "donation" fee
You pay as soon as you walk in. The Play in-app purchase is priced at $9.99–$199.99; the figures in reviews are "at least $39.99 a year," "asking for $60," and "40 dollars a year, payable before you use it." In the app, this paywall is called a "donation," asking you to "choose your annual donation amount."
This is its biggest controversy. Almost all the low-star Play reviews from 10-29 to 10-31 focus on this one issue:
"Christ should be free." "Donations should be voluntary. You can't force people to pay to get closer to God." "The Bible says: 'Freely you have received, freely give.' Please don't sell God's word." "At least give a 3–5 day trial so people can see whether it actually works."
Some commenters even teach others how to get around it: "When you reach the donation step, just force-close the app and reopen it, and the donation prompt is gone. You can use it for free." Another 2-star reviewer points at the product itself: the lock starts timing only on first open and doesn't track how long you actually spend in the app, so it does little for habits like "a few minutes of scrolling at work," and the timer can't be changed.
But people do pay for it: #21 in the US Books & Reference Top Grossing chart, #15 in Canada, and it has reached the top 150 overall Top Grossing in the Philippines. Total revenue isn't public, so we can't estimate it.
Who's competing: a dozen-plus on iOS, almost none on Android
"Faith + blocker" is one of the most crowded small categories in 2025–2026, and the reason is simple: Apple's Screen Time API makes building a blocker on iOS almost frictionless.
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bible Mode(Friday Labs) | iOS | 2025-05 | US store 12.8k rating | This mechanic was pioneered by this product's predecessor; it unlocks by scanning a paper Bible, and it stacks on quizzes, AI chat, and bedtime stories. |
| Scroll The Bible | iOS | 2025-12 | US store, 19.3k ratings, peaked #2 in Books Top Free | Doesn't block apps. Turns the Bible into TikTok-style scrolling, leans on creator videos, and has nearly the same name. |
| Bible Seal | iOS | 2026 | Unknown | Same price, $59.99. Its website has a dedicated "BibleScroll alternative" comparison page to catch search traffic. |
| Put God First, FaithLock, Psalmo, Conform, First Light, SpiritLock, Bible Break, AmenMode, and others | Mostly iOS | 2025–2026 | Mostly tiny | Same mechanic; Psalmo leads with being free |
| Holy Minutes(System Two) | Android | 2026-10 | 15k installs, 7 days +7.7k | Also gained traction on Play at the same time, but it's Bible scrolling, not blocking |
| Lockscreen Bible, BitBible, and others | Android | 2022–2023 | 400k–1.25M installs | Shows verses on the lock screen; doesn't block apps |
| YouVersion | Both platforms | 2008 | Hundreds of millions of installs | Free Bible with no blocking; BibleScroll plugs it in as a reader, not a rival |
Blocking on Android requires Accessibility or Usage Access permissions, which are a hassle and harder to get past review, so indie devs rarely build it. BibleScroll's climb on Play's category charts comes largely from paid ads in a field with little competition.
Why it took off
- The playbook is ready-made. Blocking tech, a paywall, and founder testimony ads, all of which BePresent has already run. BibleScroll just swapped in a different crowd.
- A one-line hook is enough. "Scrolling your phone while your Bible sits there." Believers already feel guilty about this, so there's nothing to educate them on.
- Went where nobody was. A dozen-plus on iOS fighting it out, almost none on Android. 10-20 started paid ads and within a week it was near the top of the national category charts in 29 countries.
- Rating flywheel. Ask for five stars at the door → high rating count and score → higher category rank → more organic installs (inferred).
The product itself isn't anything others couldn't build. It wins on distribution.
What the outside world knows
The app itself has barely registered: revenue isn't disclosed, nobody has mentioned it on X in nearly 30 days, and no media has covered it. But the company behind it, BePresent, has been covered (Boston Business Journal 2024, Product Hunt, and the TikTok playbook breakdown above), and peers know them. Competitors have already published comparison pages naming it. So this is a product that's still cold in a category that's already hot.
If it were you
Bottom line: don't build another "read to unlock" app for the English iOS market, where a dozen are already competing. The openings are what it hasn't taken: the non-English Christian market on Android, and the parts it did badly, namely the payment model and the blocking itself. Grade B.
Who it suits: developers who can write Android Accessibility or Usage Access blocking, paired with someone who has run Meta video ads and can work out install costs; ideally you're already in a market with many Christians where English isn't the first language: Brazil (Portuguese-speaking evangelicals), Mexico and Latin America (Spanish), Korea, or a Filipino who can write Tagalog verse prompts that don't read like translations.
Who it doesn't suit: people who only want iOS, or only want English; people who won't spend on ads and are counting on organic store traffic (BibleScroll itself ran on iOS organically for eight months and never took off); and people who feel uneasy charging for faith or can't write good ad copy around it.
How to do it:
- Start with Android. Blocking has to actually work: measure real usage time, not just an open-triggered timer, and let users change the limit. That's exactly what the bad reviews call out.
- Don't call the payment a "donation." Offer a 3–7-day free trial, or lock one app free and all apps behind payment; price by local market (a $40 annual fee is the price people in the Philippines called "selling God's words"). You could add a truly voluntary "pay for someone else for a year" option.
- Localization is more than translating the app UI: use the translation most local churches actually read, and the local devotional rhythm (Korea's dawn prayer, Brazil's small-group reading). Note that BibleScroll already has Spanish and Portuguese verses but runs English ads, and it hasn't made local-language creative yet.
How to get users: copy the single most effective move, a first-person testimony video from a founder or real believer, posted from a personal account: "I used to scroll Instagram 4 hours a day while my Bible gathered dust by the bed; now it's been 100 days in a row." One scene per video. Test 20–30 videos in one country on a small budget, and only add spend once install cost supports the annual fee (inferred). Also reach out to churches and small-group leaders: a pastor recommending it on Sunday is more credible than a hundred ads.
When to move: launch and start testing creative before mid-December of 2026. January is peak season for New Year resolutions and "read the whole Bible this year," and Easter (late March in 2027) is a second window. BibleScroll already has Spanish and Portuguese content, so swapping its ads into local languages is just a matter of time.
What would mean we got it wrong: ① the Meta Ad Library shows the Charles Winston page or other pages running BibleScroll ads with Portuguese or Spanish creative, meaning it's going after those markets itself; ② after mid-January, BibleScroll's Play installs flatline at 3–50k and weekly growth drops to a few thousand, which would mean this wave was paid push that dies when the spend stops and doesn't pay back; ③ YouVersion adds a "finish your reading to unlock" feature, and once a free version with hundreds of millions of users offers it, paid versions are hard to sell; ④ Google Play tightens review of Accessibility permissions and blocking apps get pulled in bulk, which is how this Android gap opened up and could also close it.

One line
BibleScroll is a Christian version of a screen-time blocker that "makes you read the Bible before unlocking social apps," built by BePresent (Screen Detox Inc, the Winston brothers). It isn't a new indie hit. It's an established team that already validated the "blocker + hard paywall + creators/ads" playbook, and is rerunning it with a faith wrapper: the iOS version launched 2026-02 and has run for over half a year; the Android version went live 2026-09-12. From Oct 20, co-founder Charles Winston's Facebook page began running Meta video ads for the Play version, and Play installs rose from about 1.8k to 34k within a week.

- 7 day new installs 31,960; charted in 29 countries that day. In the US Books & Reference Top Free chart it climbed from #43 at 10-29 to #17 at 11-06; Top Grossing went 42 → 21. Philippines Books Top Free #6; the Philippines overall Top Grossing peaked at #120 (11-05). Singapore, South Africa, and Canada category Top Free charts 5–6.
- Rating 4.89,5 stars at 92% (11-06 histogram [151,0,0,682,10790]). Ratings-to-installs ratio ≈ 1/3, far above a normal app (typically 1–3%). Most likely a store rating prompt during onboarding (a common BePresent-family move); there's no evidence of rating fraud, but the ratio means rating counts shouldn't be read as download counts. Unverified.
- In-app purchases $9.99–$199.99; a third-party price comparison page (Bible Seal blog, 2026-09-15 US prices checked) says BibleScroll is a hard subscription after a 7-day trial, with Pro at $59.99 a year; a Philippine review says "$40 a year, you pay before you use it."
App Store (appstore library)
- iOS id 6755406222, "BibleScroll: Christian Focus," launched 2026-02-01, category Reference. US rating 9,018 (11-06); over the last 7 days +661,10-28 to 11-06, daily +17 to +152; best US Reference Top Free rank #9.
- Nigeria and Tanzania Reference hit #1 on Top Grossing, the Philippines and South Africa #2, Singapore #4. Paying power in the African and Southeast Asian English-speaking Christian market is low, but it's enough to chart in the category, since the bar to chart there is very low.
Same developer: BePresent (screen-time control, launched on iOS 2022-09, 71.5k rating in the US store; on Android since 2026-04, 266k cumulative installs, 7 daily +29k). The developer's library totals about 300k Play installs.
2. Competitors: this niche is already crowded
"Faith + app blocker" was a clearly crowded niche in 2025–2026, with a dozen similar apps pushing on TikTok at the same time.
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from BibleScroll |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bible Mode: Reduce Screen Time(Friday Labs) | iOS | 2025-05 | 12.8k US ratings | Earlier clone. Unlock by scanning a paper Bible or reflecting on a verse. Adds mini-games, quizzes, Bible Chat and bedtime stories. Lots of features. |
| Scroll The Bible(Gabriel Jacobson) | iOS | 2025-12 | 19.3k US ratings, peaked #2 in Books Top Free | Doesn't block apps. It turns the Bible into TikTok-style scrolling, one verse at a time. #scrollthebible on TikTok has creator videos with hundreds of thousands to millions of views. The name is nearly identical to BibleScroll, so they split search traffic. |
| Put God First: Bible Focus(Stay Here) | iOS | 2026-03 | US store rating 139 | Same "read the Bible before you scroll" idea. Driven by creator @jacob.coyne (319k views). |
| Bible Seal | iOS | 2026 | Not verified | Blocking + Bible reading prompts + AI Q&A + memorization. Same price, $59.99. Its website runs a "BibleScroll alternative" comparison article to grab search. |
| FaithLock, Psalmo, Conform, First Light, SpiritLock, Bible Focus, BibleSwipe, Bible Break, Bible Note, AmenMode, Haven and more | Mostly iOS (Psalmo is on both) | 2025–2026 | Mostly tiny | Same basic mechanics. Some are free (Psalmo leads with free). |
| Holy Minutes: Bible Scrolling(System Two) | Android | 2026-10 | 15k installs, 7 daily +7.7k | A few on Play that picked up traction around the same time, but they lean toward "scrolling the Bible" rather than blocking. |
| Lockscreen Bible, BitBible, Bible Homescreen | Android | 2022–2023 | 400k–1.25M installs each | Show verses on the lock screen or home screen. They don't block other apps. |
| YouVersion Bible App | Both platforms | 2008 | Hundreds of millions of installs | A big-brand free Bible app with streak tracking and daily verses, but it doesn't block other apps. BibleScroll's Play listing says it "syncs with YouVersion," treating it as a reader, not a rival. |
| BePresent, Opal, one sec, ScreenZen and other general-purpose blockers | Both platforms | 2020–2022 | Million-level | No religious wrapper. BibleScroll is basically BePresent with a faith skin. |
Key observation: on iOS the category is crowded (Apple's Screen Time API makes blockers easy to build). On Android, there are almost no competitors doing "blocking + Bible reading". Android blocking needs accessibility or UsageStats permissions, which indie devs rarely take on. The Bible apps I can find in the Play library are mostly lock-screen verses or "scrolling" apps. BibleScroll's climb on the Play category chart is largely ad spend on an empty patch.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Meta paid ads (confirmed, the main driver): the Meta Ad Library shows the personal profile of co-founder "Charles Winston" (page_id 999559203240253) running 314 ads right now, 90% of them video, pointing to BePresent Android and BibleScroll. BibleScroll ad copy is consistently first-person testimony: "I always felt so GUILTY scrolling on my phone while my Bible just sat there 😔 … I'm now on a 234-day streak." Their iOS ads started at 2026-08-28, the Play-version ads started at 2026-10-20, and 10-26 and 10-28 brought new creatives. That lines up with Play installs surging from 10-31. Facebook also shows another page (61561680963484) posting the same creatives. Running ads through a founder's real-name personal profile looks like a real person sharing, not a brand ad.
- TikTok ads (confirmed): the TikTok Ad Library lists advertiser "Screen Detox Inc" (TikTok account @biblescrollapp), which has run ads across several European countries since 2026-08-12 (the library only covers European placements; 0 ads are live now).
- Own TikTok account + sock puppets / UGC (confirmed, small volume): @biblescrollapp has 1,212 followers, its top video got 104K views (2026-05 "The devil wants you to scroll"). From late October, small accounts like @guidedby.jay, @dombelieves and @nathan.prayss kept posting almost daily "biblescroll made me read the Bible instead of scrolling TikTok", each with only a few hundred views. This is BePresent's usual playbook: a "founder account + UGC matrix" (byplutus.com 2026-10-29 broke it down: two brothers run 6 TikTok and 2 IG accounts, 58M views total, and BePresent is at about $20K MRR). Judging by view counts, though, TikTok is not where this wave of growth came from.
- Store search / name piggybacking (inferred): several million-view creator videos on TikTok repeatedly say "go search 'scroll the bible' on the App Store," and BibleScroll's name is nearly identical, so it probably picks up that search traffic. Not verified.
- Rating prompts (inferred): Play ratings reach 1/3 of installs, 5 stars at 92%. Many reviews say things like "Haven't used the app yet" or "just downloaded," which fits in-app rating prompts. That in turn lifts store conversion and category rank.
- Timing: YouVersion runs "Global Bible Month" every November, and early November is a peak for Christian Bible-reading topics. Whether that is related is unverified.
Where the money comes from: a 7-day trial, then a hard paywall (annual about $40–60, top tier $199.99, possibly lifetime). Ads mainly target the US (Meta's library tags US), but Meta's automatic expansion sends a lot of traffic to low-cost, high-religiosity markets like the Philippines. Play review samples all come from the Philippines, and the app reached the top 150 on Philippines' overall Top Grossing, so people there do pay. Some Filipino users strongly resent paying for a faith app (1 stars, "Christ should be free," "Scam").
4. Why it charted
- Reusing the team's playbook: the Winston brothers already proved out BePresent with a blocker, a hard paywall, founder-testimony content and paid ads (BePresent has 70k US-store ratings and 260k Android installs in six months). BibleScroll uses the same tech, the same paywall and the same ad profile, just a different audience.
- Good audience choice: Christians already feel guilty about phone scrolling eating into Bible time, and the ad hook "phone scrolling, Bible sitting there" lands in one line. Religious users are open to paid subscriptions, and retention runs on daily streaks. The US, Philippines and African Christian audiences on Android are large with low CPI.
- Android is empty ground: there are a dozen-plus iOS apps in the same niche, but almost nothing on Android. Starting Oct 20 they began buying Play installs and within a week were near the top of the 29 category chart.
- Rating flywheel: prompted ratings → high rating and review counts → category rank → organic traffic.
5. Differentiation
The product itself has no real differentiation. "Block until you've read" was first done by Bible Mode (2025-05). FaithLock, Psalmo, Put God First, Bible Seal and a dozen others do the same thing. BibleScroll's reader, streaks, daily verses and widgets are all table stakes. What's actually different: (1) it's backed by a company with mature blocking tech and ad-buying ability, so it launched on both platforms with multiple languages (Spanish and Portuguese Bibles) and kept buying Meta ads. (2) The Android version is rare in this niche. (3) Its name collides with the TikTok hit "Scroll The Bible." It worked because of distribution (ads plus an empty platform), not product differences.
6. How visible it is
- Revenue is not public. TrustMRR has no entry for BibleScroll (only similar apps like Bibly and Daily Bible Companion). X (x-radar, last 30 days) shows zero mentions. No press coverage.
- But BePresent itself has been covered (Boston Business Journal 2024, Product Hunt, byplutus 2026-10 breaking down its TikTok playbook, Boost VC investment), so people in the space know this team.
- Competitor Bible Seal already runs a "BibleScroll alternative" comparison article, and new apps in the category appear every month. So: the product itself is still unknown, but the category is already packed.
7. Takeaways
- Take a proven utility app (blocker, habit tracker) and reskin it for a strongly identity-driven audience (faith, fitness, study), reusing the paywall and ad creatives.
- Run "first-person testimony" video ads through a founder's real-name personal profile. It looks more like a real person than a brand page.
