"Is your face symmetrical?" A face-scanning app with 18k installs, and the studio behind it has already done this once
What it is Take a selfie and AI scores your facial symmetry, points out which side is weaker, then gives you a 4-week plan of mewing, jaw training, and gua sha practice, on a weekly subscription.
Why it's taking off The studio behind a copycat swapped "face scoring + plan + subscription" for a less competitive keyword, "face symmetry", and relies on top-ranked Play search, a low-barrier Beauty subcategory chart, and a steady flow of 4.7-point installs, plus a few short videos "rating your features".
CHow you could follow Don't build another symmetry app. Learn its playbook: on the proven face-scan subscription template, switch to a narrower keyword where search results only show one-off tools (face shape, jawline, de-puffing, or women's facial care), and launch with Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Polish store pages to ride the Play subcategory chart.

SymmetryIQ lets you take a selfie and get a "facial symmetry score" from 0 to 100, then builds a 4-week practice plan ordered by your weakest areas, at $4.99 per week. It has drawn 3k installs on Google Play in 18 months, and last week grew more than twice as fast as before, ranking #30 to #40 on the Beauty free charts in Germany, Italy, and the UK. It looks like a one-person project, but it is actually the second product from a US app studio that already made a hit of the same type. Below: what it sells, where the traffic comes from, who is behind it, and whether you can follow.
An Instagram video with 137 likes
On 2026 Aug 10, SymmetryIQ had been on Google Play for 6 days when an Instagram account, jake benedict (@jakebenedictt), posted a reel: rating a "French nose" from 0 to 10, then saying "if you want to know what this app is called, it's Symmetry IQ." As of today the video has 137 likes and 8 comments. The top comment is "Is it free?", another says "you can tell the glow-up person is obviously AI." On Aug 29, the same account posted another video on Snapchat Spotlight titled "Jake Benedict reveals the app that turns a nerd into a glow-up star," with 198 likes, and the comments read "AI 😭".
The numbers are small, but the format is typical: score a face first, make the viewer wonder "what about me," then name the app at the end. This is the standard playbook for face-scanning apps in the looksmaxxing (male "looks improvement") circle. There are a few similar examples: an Instagram reel on "what ratio suits her," ending by recommending Symmetry IQ with "you'll get a symmetry score, see the problems, and get personalized exercises"; and a Facebook page aimed at teen boys demoing it in teaching reels. Whether these accounts belong to the studio or are paid creators can't be told from the outside.
What it sells
The first line of the store page is "Build A More Symmetrical Face." The flow has three steps:
- Scan: a front-facing selfie produces a symmetry index from 0–100, broken into 10 items (jaw symmetry, facial thirds, eye alignment, cheekbone balance, etc.), showing you "which side is weaker."
- Practice: a 4-week plan generated from your weakest items, covering mewing (tongue on the palate), jaw training, gua sha, posture correction, facial exercises, plus 5 small daily habits.
- Retain: check off tasks daily, build streaks, and rescan periodically to see whether the score has improved. There is also a "Symmetry Lab" with left-right face comparison, facial thirds and fifths, golden ratio, face shape, 8 small tools such as "de-puffing preview" and "jawline preview," and an AI coach that knows your scan results.
Monetization is in-app subscriptions, priced on Play at $4.99 to $29.99 (weekly $4.99, annual $29.99). The interface supports 7 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, and Polish.
The difference from the long list of looksmax apps comes down to one word: symmetry. Others give you a "looks score," a "PSL rating," or tell you whether you're a chad. This one only says "how far apart your left and right sides are, and how to train it back." The number sounds objective, doesn't shame anyone, and works for both men and women, so it can sit in the Beauty category and target the "face symmetry" search term, instead of fighting the category giants with millions of installs in the male-focused sections.
How big are the numbers?
| Date | Google Play installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 15,641 | 1,689 |
| 11-03 | 17,910 | 1,865 |
| 11-06 | 18,652 | 1,946 |
Added about 3,000 installs in the past week, averaging 430 a day; in the first 86 days after launch it averaged about 180 a day. It's accelerating lately, but the absolute numbers are still tiny. The store page 11-06 shows "10K+ downloads".
4.7,1,946 ratings, and the rating count is 10% of installs, where a normal app sits at 1–3%. In the star distribution, 2-star ratings are 0, while only a handful of reviews have text. This almost certainly means the app shows Google's rating prompt, and likely asks "do you like it?" first (inference). Peer apps in the same niche also have rating rates between 4% and 14%, which is standard in this circle, but it means the 4.7 rating can't be read as word of mouth. Among the reviews that do have text, one 9-23-star reads: "Too many ads + scam. You have to pay, then they push all kinds of stuff to buy."
On the chart (Google Play Beauty free chart, 11-06): Germany #32, Italy #35, South Africa #40, UK #47, Philippines #51, US #109. Nine more countries, including the UAE, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Netherlands, show nearly identical rankings (87–92), which suggests one shared chart reused across countries, so it can't be counted as "charted in 16 countries independently." It has no top-grossing chart ranking, so how much money it has made is not visible from the outside.
There is an iOS version too, but the US store shows only 17 ratings at 3.8 stars, so it hasn't really taken off. Almost all of the traffic is on Android.
Who's behind it
On Play, the developer name is the individual "Rasmus Bergman," and the developer info lists the Swedish company RB Media AB (Knivsta, north of Stockholm). But the support email is [email protected], the same one used by the male looks app "Mogged."
The Metellus Productions website calls itself a "US consumer app studio," with 600k+ cumulative downloads across its portfolio, which lists Mogged and Symmetry IQ, plus CaseCub, HistoryForge, FERAL, and Ellie. It describes its capabilities as "subscription paywalls and pricing experiments," "an analytics pipeline that attributes ad and content spend to revenue," and "Next.js websites, plus search and content fed into the product." Mogged launched on iOS in July 2025 and on Android in October; on Google Play it has 320k installs and 20k+ ratings.
So SymmetryIQ did not start from scratch: it is a team that already proved out "face-scoring → personalized plan → check-ins → weekly subscription," and rebuilt the same thing around a different keyword. I did not find out whether Rasmus Bergman / RB Media AB and Metellus are partners, contractors, or an operator arrangement.
Where users come from
| Channel | What we saw | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Play search | 11-06 ranks #7 for "face symmetry" and #6 for "symmetry" in Play search in the US store. The app name is the keyword, and the first line of the description is the selling point. | Certain |
| Beauty category chart | Beauty is a small category: a few hundred installs a day can put an app in the top 50 in Germany, Italy, and the UK, and charting brings fresh exposure. | Certain |
| Short video | Reels on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook with "rate your features → app is Symmetry IQ," a few hundred likes each | Present, but small |
| Website search traffic | symmetryiq.app has 60 pages: 12 free web face-test tools (symmetry test, golden ratio, profile view, face shape, "how old do I look"), looksmax glossary pages (canthal tilt, gonial angle), long-tail Q&A like "why is one side of my face bigger" and "unilateral chewing," plus Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish versions. The build was only finished in mid-October, so its contribution to earlier installs is probably small (inference). | Present, contribution unclear |
| Paid acquisition | The studio's website explicitly mentions attribution for paid campaigns, but I found no record of it buying ads. Not finding any doesn't mean none ran. | Uncertain |
| TikTok | No brand account or product-review videos found. The term "symmetry app" is taken by a fitness app with the same name. | Nothing seen |
The trend is tailwind. On TikTok, the "Inverted" reversal filter (see yourself the way others see you) had a 2.5M-view video in February. A CapCut tutorial on the "Asymmetry vs Symmetry" symmetry filter, 10-29, has 7.35M views, and same-topic tutorials kept multiplying in October. "Is my face asymmetrical" is a question a lot of people have wondered about, and the big platforms are doing the education for it for free.
Who it's competing with
This niche is already crowded, and SymmetryIQ is the small one in it:
| Product | Google Play scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Umax - Become Hot | 10.8M installs | Overall face-rating score, aimed at men, two orders of magnitude bigger |
| PSL - Looksmax & Ascend | 1.07M, +25k a week | Hardcore PSL tier ratings |
| UCHAD AI Face Rating | 757k | "Chad" is an in-group meme |
| LooksLab - AI glowup coach | 330k, Beauty top grossing in Indonesia 13 | Full glow-up coach with revenue signals |
| Mogged (same studio) | 320k, +3,300 a week | Sister product, men's looks rating |
| New entrants since 2025 include Mog Academy and LooksIQ | 30k–450k; Mog Academy +27k a week, LooksIQ +15k a week | Same template, growing much faster |
| Long-running face-exercise apps (Jawline Exercises, Face Yoga) | 5.5M–28M | Exercises only, no scan or scoring |
| Long-running face-test apps (Hiface, Beauty Calculator, Golden Ratio Face) | 830k–23.7M | One test and gone, no plans or subscriptions |
| Small tools in "face symmetry" search results (Midline, TrueMirror, etc.) | Small, never charted | One test and gone |
A few takeaways. First, apps that combine "scoring + plan + subscription" have kept launching new entrants all through the first half of 2026. Second, its weekly growth 3,000 is only a ninth of Mog Academy's. Third, the word "symmetry" itself has little competition: most results are one-off tools, and only a few of the subscription-and-plan apps use it. The differentiation found it a quiet spot, but it hasn't produced a surge.
If it were you
C: Copy its playbook, not the product. What it proves is that an established team can take a narrow keyword and steadily win a few hundred installs a day in a small Play category. It doesn't prove how much money that brings in. The face-scan scoring subscription space already has a dozen-plus players competing, and the fastest-growing ones are bigger than it is.
Who it suits: small teams that already run a subscription app, have a paywall and analytics pipeline ready, and want to replicate the model with another product; or people who are good at Play store optimization (titles, keywords, localized store listings).
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants this as a first product (you won't have Mogged's template and experience, and you'll be up against dozens of copycats); anyone who only writes English and wants to head-on compete in the looksmax men's market (Umax and PSL are already at the tens-of-millions and millions level); anyone who can't stomach the "score-driven onboarding, weekly subscription, short-video marketing" approach.
How to do it: don't build "yet another symmetry app." Follow its logic: take a proven template and find an "adjacent but narrower" term where search results only show one-off tools. Examples: only face shape, only jawline, only double chin / facial puffiness, or the same thing as a women's skincare and facial massage plan. Copy the core flow: one selfie → an objective-looking score you can train up → a 4-week plan → daily check-ins → weekly subscription. Trigger the paywall right when the user sees "my score went up."
How to acquire users: start with Play search and the small category charts. Name the app after the keyword, localize the store listing into German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Polish, since Beauty charts in those countries have the lowest bar to entry. For short video, use the format "score one face, then reveal the app name," and post 20–30 videos from one account first to see which ones pass 10K views (inference). Turn the core algorithm into a free web tool with long-tail Q&A pages to build search traffic slowly.
Is now the window? This isn't a window with a deadline. The topics (symmetry filters, looksmax) have been hot for over a year. The real risk is that more people keep copying the same template, so the later you enter, the narrower your keyword has to be.
How you'd be wrong: (1) three months from now SymmetryIQ is still getting a few hundred installs a day and has never charted in any country's top Beauty grossing list, which would show that a narrow keyword only supports a small business, not worth a new team's full effort; (2) Google Play tightens policy on "face rating / appearance evaluation" apps, or a wave of similar apps gets pulled, which would close the whole path; (3) the reverse: it charts in the top grossing lists early in 2027, or the studio discloses revenue, which would show that the "narrow keyword + small category" unit economics work, and then you can move to other languages and keywords and raise the grade.

Why SymmetryIQ (com.bergmanmedia.symmetryiq) took off
Channel: Google Play (Beauty) | Launched 2026-08-04 | Research date 2026-11-06 Data sources: our googleplay / appstore / metaads / googleads / tiktokads databases (agent-im machine, 2026-10-29 to 11-06), Play / App Store pages, official website and developer site (read via Jina, 2026-11-06), TikHub, x-radar, Jina / Exa search.
One line
The AI takes a selfie and returns a "facial symmetry score" of 0–100 with a 10-part breakdown, then builds a 4-week practice plan around the weakest area (mewing, jaw training, gua sha, posture). Weekly subscription $4.99 / annual $29.99. It isn't a solo indie hit: it's the second product from US app studio Metellus Productions (maker of the male looksmaxxing app "Mogged"), built on the looksmaxxing subscription template. It swapped in a narrower, easier-to-search keyword, "face symmetry", and on Play's Beauty category it steadily draws volume from search and low-bar category charts.
1. How the data looks
| Date | Installs | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-29 | 15,641 | 1,689 | googleplay.app_day |
| 2026-11-03 | 17,910 | 1,865 | Same as above |
| 2026-11-06 | 18,652 | 1,946 | Same as above |
- +3,011 installs over 7 days (about 430/day); from launch 86 to 10-29 cumulative 15.6k, average about 180/day → recently accelerating, but at a very small scale.
- Rating 4.73, ratings/installs = 10.4% (common range in the category 1–3%); about 30 new ratings a day ≈ 7% of new installs. Star distribution [1★22, 2★0, 3★45, 4★343, 5★1533]; 2-star has stayed at 0, and only 5 ratings carry written reviews (app_snap). This is the typical pattern of an in-app prompt for a Google rating that may first ask "do you like it?". Peers: Mogged 6.4%, UCHAD 14%, Umax 3.7%, so it's not unusual for this niche, but it means the rating count was prompted and shouldn't be read as word of mouth. (Inferred, unverified)
- Category chart (Beauty Free, chart_rank): Germany 25–37, Italy 31–36, UK 33–48, South Africa 34–40, Philippines 43–52, US 109–123, India ~190. UAE / Hong Kong / Malaysia / Singapore / Thailand / Netherlands / Saudi Arabia / Vietnam / Poland show nearly identical daily ranks (85–105), which is the same aggregated chart, so they don't count as 16 separate country charts. Nigeria is still on the FAMILY chart at 117–143.
- No grossing chart ranking; Play in-app purchases $4.99–$29.99. No revenue signal.
- The iOS version (Symmetry IQ, id6754335554, seller RB Media AB, launched around 2025-11) has only 17 ratings and a 3.8 average in the US store, and our appstore database shows no chart appearances. iOS barely took off; the traction happened only on Android.
2. Who made it (key finding)
- The Play developer name is the individual "Rasmus Bergman", package name bergmanmedia; the iOS seller is the Swedish company RB Media AB.
- But the support email on Play is [email protected], the same as Mogged (com.mogged.android, Metellus Productions) (googleplay.app).
- The Metellus Productions website (metellusproductions.com, 2026-11-06) describes itself as "a US consumer app studio, 600,000+ downloads". Its portfolio: Mogged, CaseCub, HistoryForge, Symmetry IQ, FERAL, Ellie. Its capabilities list includes "subscription paywalls, pricing experiments", "analytics pipelines attributing ad and content spend to revenue", and "Next.js websites plus the search and content work that feeds the product".
- Takeaway: SymmetryIQ is one app in the studio's portfolio, with the Android version run by Metellus (or in partnership with Rasmus Bergman). So it didn't start from zero: it inherits Mogged's playbook, the same funnel of scan → score → plan → daily streak → subscription. Mogged: Play 320k installs, 20.6k ratings (2025-10 launched); iOS "Mogged: Glow Up for Men" launched 2025-07.

4. Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store search | 2026-11-06 Read from the US Play search: "face symmetry" #7, "symmetry" #6; the title is the keyword SymmetryIQ, and the first line of the description is "Build A More Symmetrical Face" | Yes |
| Beauty category Top Free chart | Beauty Top Free chart ranks 25–52 in Germany / Italy / UK / South Africa / Philippines (chart_rank); Beauty is a small category, so a few hundred global installs a day can get into the top 50, and charting itself brings more exposure | Yes |

Scale unknown | Yes (exists), scale unverified |
| TikTok | TikHub searches for "symmetryiq" and "symmetry iq app" found no brand account or product-linked videos; "symmetry app" is dominated by a fitness app with the same name, Symmetry (Symmetry Club) | None found |
| SEO / programmatic content | symmetryiq.app has 65 pages: 12 free browser face-testing tools (symmetry test, golden ratio, side profile, face shape, how old you look…), 10 looksmax glossary entries (canthal tilt, gonial angle…), 8 face-shape pages, and 10 long-tail Q&A pages ("why is one side of my face bigger", "unilateral chewing"), in Spanish / Portuguese / Italian / Polish; all sitemap lastmod dates are 2026-10-17. A third-party comparison article (radiantsnaps) already cites its "symmetry mirror" tool. The timing is too recent; its contribution to installs from 8 to October is probably small | Yes (exists), contribution unverified |

| Sister app cross-promo (Mogged) | Same studio, same user base; cross-promotion possible, but no direct evidence found | No |
| Timing: the symmetry topic keeps trending | TikTok "Inverted" filter videos by @mrwollas 2026-02 2.5M views; CapCut "Asymmetry vs Symmetry" mask filter tutorial by @mud70227 2026-10-29 7.35M views, with same-theme tutorials clustering in October; looksmaxxing is already a mature niche | Yes (topic heat); the direct pull on its installs is unverified |
5. Why it took off
- Proven template + experienced team: the publisher, Metellus, already ran Mogged through "AI face scoring → personalized plan → check-ins → weekly subscription"; SymmetryIQ is the same template with a different keyword (Play lists an email address, and the official site shows a portfolio of works as evidence).
- Picked a narrow, searchable term: results for "face symmetry" were mostly one-off mini tools, while this is one of the few with a plan and subscription; the title carries the keyword, ranking #7 in US search.
- Low bar in the Beauty category: in Beauty free charts in Germany, Italy, the UK and others, a few hundred installs a day gets you into the top 40, and charting then feeds itself; half of the "charted" entries in 16 countries are the same aggregated chart.
- Ratings are nudged up nicely: 4.73 stars, a 10% rating rate, 2 stars at 0, and almost no written reviews, so store conversion rests on that.
- Short-video content for conversion: within 6 days of launch, IG reels were already pushing it with the format "rate your features 0–10 → the app is called Symmetry IQ," consistent with the creator and account-network playbook common in the looksmax niche.
- Topic tailwind: TikTok's inverted filter and CapCut's symmetry filter kept producing hits over 2026 years, so users already have a ready curiosity about "is my face symmetrical."
6. Differentiation
- Positioning difference: swap looksmax's "attractiveness score / PSL rating" for a "symmetry score," a number that sounds objective, doesn't shame anyone, is gender-neutral (a review says "Love that it's not a gendered app"), and claims you can train it back. That lets it compete in Beauty, attract women and the "face symmetry" search term, instead of fighting Umax, UCHAD and PSL head-on in the male-leaning Health & Fitness and Lifestyle categories.
- Product difference: the iOS version stresses that facial landmarks are computed on-device and never uploaded (a privacy selling point); "Symmetry Lab" has a 3D grid, left-right face comparison and visualization of the thirds and fifths.
- Is that why it took off? Partly. The positioning gave it a low-competition keyword and a spot in the category chart, which directly drove the growth. But the features aren't fundamentally different from dozens of other apps in the niche; what's really copyable is the studio's distribution and monetization template. Its growth (+3k/week) still trails LooksIQ (+15k) and Mog Academy (+27k) over the same period, which suggests the differentiation brought a stable small business, not an explosion.
7. How many people have seen it
- No press coverage; x-radar shows only 0 posts mentioning "symmetryiq" or "Metellus Productions" over the last 90 days; no public revenue; it appears only on ToolHunter, AppBrain and a third-party comparison article.
- The studio has only publicly disclosed "600,000+ downloads." → Few people know about it yet.
- Copycats: none found that specifically copy SymmetryIQ, but the whole looksmax / face-scan subscription niche is already crowded (see the competitor table; new apps were still entering through the first half of 2026).
8. What to borrow
- On a validated subscription template, use a "adjacent but narrower" search term for a second and third product (Mogged → Symmetry IQ), reusing the code, paywall and content team.
- Make a small Play category (Beauty) the main battlefield; a few hundred installs a day gets you into the top 50 in several countries.
- Turn the core algorithm into a free web tool plus long-tail Q&A pages, capturing SEO traffic and going multilingual.
- An "objective, improvable score" is easier for non-core users to accept than an "attractiveness score," and draws less flak.
- In-app prompts for ratings pushed the score to 4.7 with a 10% rating rate, directly lifting store conversion.
9. Uncertain
- Revenue: no Top Grossing rank, so paid conversion and subscription revenue are completely unknown.
- Paid acquisition: the ad libraries don't cover it; Metellus says it does attribution on paid campaigns, but whether it has bought Play or Meta ads for SymmetryIQ is unverified.
- The relationship between Rasmus Bergman / RB Media AB and Metellus (partner, contractor, or Metellus acquiring or operating it) is unverified.
- Whether the IG / FB reels come from in-house account networks or paid creators, and their view counts, are unverified.
- It's unclear whether the install acceleration starting late October came from the SEO site launch (10-17), multilingual versions, or a Play 2.0.1 release / ad push.
- The Play launch date 2026-08-04 may have been reset by changing the listing info (the database shows the same released_store 08-04, and no earlier reviews were seen, so it's most likely the original launch).
